Revisions: 12-03-09: Initial release. 12-21-09: Made the whole tutorial a bit more simple. INTRODUCT

Revisions: 12-03-09: Initial release.

12-21-09: Made the whole tutorial a bit more simple.

INTRODUCTION:

The SEGA genesis was a fourth generation gaming console, which became extremely popular all around the world in the early 90’s. This tutorial is about playing SEGA on your ps2 with an Emulator called PGEN, with the assistance of ULaunchELF.

You will need:

1) A ps2, slim or fat.

2) A Modchip and The ULaunchELF CD.
(OR) An original Swap magic DVD and the ULaunchELF CD.
(OR) A memory card exploited with Free Mcboot, which has ULaunchELF installed on it.

4) A USB flashdrive or a USB External HD.

5) PGEN Emulator.

6) SEGA genesis roms. You could get them from romnation.net or by using p2p clients.

This is what you do next:

Format the USB media to FAT32.

Extract ‘pgen_codej_abcd_48.zip’, so that you will get a ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file.

Copy the ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file to your USB media.

Copy the SEGA ROMs to your USB media.

That’s the picture of the contents of my USB media. As you can see, there is a ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file and a folder named ‘SEGA ROMS’ which contains all my SEGA ROMs.

Connect the USB media to the PS2’s USB port.

Now boot the ULaunchELF CD on your PS2, by using a mod chip or swap magic. (Free Mcboot users can load ULaunchELF from the Free Mcboot menu)

The ULaunchELF Browser controls:
Up and down to navigate through files or directories
O = Select file or directory
Triangle = Browse back or exit menu

Now, after you boot ULaunchELF, press the ‘O’ button to enter ‘FileBrowser‘. The following screen would appear…

Navigate to ‘mass’ and then press the ‘O’ button to select it.

You would be able to see the contents of your USB media, which includes the ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file and the ROM files.

Navigate to the ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ and press the ‘O’ button.

PGEN will now load and the PGEN menu would get displayed.

NOTE: The background picture, which you will get, will be different.

PGEN Menu Controls:
Up/Down for navigation
‘X ‘ = Select or launch ROMs
Triangle = Browse back or exit menu

Select ‘Rom List’ by pressing the ‘X’ button.

In the next menu, Select the ‘Pendrive’ option.

Navigate to the SEGA ROMs and and select them by pressing ‘X’ and the ROM would load…

Default PGEN game controls:

Square = ‘a’, X = ‘b’, Circle = ‘c’, Select = PGEN menu (the PGEN menu includes a Memory Card save state option)

The up/down/left/right buttons and the start button retains the same functions of the SEGA genesis controller.

NOTE 1 : Once you have started playing a SEGA ROM, you could remove the ULaunchELF CD from your PS2 and hence save your lens from dying, or else the CD will keep spinning.
NOTE 2 : PGEN is also compatible with SEGA Master System ROMs.

That’s about everything. If you have any doubts leave a comment.

There was an interesting article in the LA times yesterday, an interview with composer James Horner

There was an interesting article in the LA times yesterday, an interview with composer James Horner concerning his collaboration with “Titanic’s” James Cameron on his new film “Avatar. It is a very expensive film, and James Horner, an Oscar -winning composer, is most likely making at least a million dollars on it.

In the interview, Horner explains what he is doing to create a memorable, unique, and completely different sounding score to go with the film:

From the LA times, below:

JH: I had to create a sound world that was really quite different than anything I had used before. It wasn’t simply a matter of using instruments from New Zealand or Iceland or Lapland; I had to create new instruments, too, a whole library of instruments and sounds. I also found indigenous instruments and digitized them and changed them slightly. I used a lot of voice and digitized that to create a sound world for myself, a palette of colors so that I was able to create worlds that satisfied [James Cameron] and his need for this new world to sound appropriate as a place that you had never been to. It had to be different and alien yet at same time to have a very warm quality and an organic quality. The score needed to be very grounded, too, as I said. The score is very thematic even though the colors are very exotic.

GB: That’s interesting about the created or altered instruments. Could you be more specific?

JH: There were a lot of vocal sounds I took from various places. These were odd vocal sounds that I would manipulate digitally and there were interesting flutes, for instance, from South America and Finland that I wanted to be more abstract. I also have instruments invented from scratch. They were programmed. There were a lot of instruments that sound like flutes of different sorts, but they were combined with gamelan-sounding instruments. The gamelan is Balinese. The word itself means ”orchestra.” The individual gamelan instruments are these bell-like sounds. A lot of the percussion for “Avatar” is gamelan-based or sounds gamelan-based. So this has this sort of quality of ringing bells, like Indonesian music. It’s a very pretty fusion of different worlds that gives the place itself a quality that is magical. Using it for percussion, rather than drums or other things, gives a sort of magical glow to everything. And as I said there were a lot of instruments that I invented and worked on with my programs. I was very particular.

James Horner describes the process that Tomas does on every film very eloquently. The irony is, Tomas used to be the guy that was creating the sounds for other composers, who then took the created instrumental sounds and wrote the music. We decided many years ago that Tomas should be writing with his own sounds and stop working for other composers. (Let it be known here that Tomas never worked with James Horner). James Horner has a guy, or many guys, working day and night on whichever is Horner’s sample-based software/hardware/computer system of choice to create this world. James gets to listen, choose his favorite, and write with it.

Tomas, working on Independent Films, does all of the creation work himself, which can take weeks, sometimes months, then he gets the luxuty of sitting back and writing the score. This takes much more time, as he is one man doing the job of five men. The ultimate irony is, a small film that does not pay much, is going to get a score that can rival any million dollar Oscar winner’s score, any day.

The only drawback for a director is the score can take a little more time. But, once it is finished, as always happens to Tomas, people will be blown away by what they hear, and wonder where “this guy” has been and how come they never heard of him?

I am not writing to give Tomas a big head, or justify why a film takes so long. This has been his track record, and every director he has scored a film for will tell you that. Perhaps someday that budget of a million dollars will come along, and Tomas can hire an assistant, and the film will be finished faster. Until that day, he works tirelessly, no matter how much he is paid, to give the director everything he has inside of himself, and more. He comes perilously close to making himself physically ill, from overwork, lack of sleep, too many cigarettes – that is where I come in, to try and get him to rest, eat better, drink less coffee, smoke a little bit less. It causes us to bicker sometimes, but I can never really be angry with him, as I see the work ethic he has, and the relentless drive for perfection, and when all is said and done, his music blows me, and everybody else away, every film, every time.

You can read the full LA times article here.

Okay, so recently I was browsing Wikipedia and found, surprisingly, that I was ‘deceased

Okay, so recently I was browsing Wikipedia and found, surprisingly, that I was ‘deceased’! I guess since it’s been 9 or so years since DGen was updated, people could assume something like that… So no, not quite ‘dead’ yet, still occasionally tinkering with emulators – nothing particularly useful, just fun to play around with.

I decided it might be an idea to form some kind of presence on the Internet (since Finalburn.com has long since deteriorated into adverts), hence finalburn.wordpress.com

Briefly for those who don’t know, I wrote DTMNT while at Uni, and DGen, when I should have been studying

Then I wrote Final Burn, and PicoDrive – the latter originally for Pocket PC (hence the name) but I personally felt the codebase was a lot better than DGen so I’ve been tinkering with that since in my (somewhat limited) spare time!

To be honest it does slightly confuse me why DGen is ported so much, Charles MacDonald’s megadrive emulator is much better. It’s nice though I guess But DGen wasn’t really the best code. That said I have a port of DGen for my PSP…!

Here is GigaDrive, which is sort of a re-write/clean up of PicoDrive but for PC:

It also uses ‘Scour 68000′ which is the cpu emulator I wrote from scratch. And yes that is a fun little ‘fishbowl’ like pixel shader

Since our 27 year old Volvo has been in the shop a bit longer than anticipated, we did not go up to

Since our 27 year old Volvo has been in the shop a bit longer than anticipated, we did not go up to be with Tomás’s family yesterday. In fact, the day before, I realized we had precious little food in the house, and all of our neighbors were out. I decided to walk to the nearest Giant Eagle Market, which is 2 and a half miles away. I made it a personal goal, and you know the old story Grandpa would tell you when you were complaining about something, that he had to walk five miles to school uphill every day? In the snow? (even if he was a southern California Native….)

Then as you grew up you made the joke “uphill both ways, right Grandpa?” (Or Dad, or whomever is trying to use this particular way of telling you to quit whining).

Well, I just found out that in Pittsburgh, it really is uphill both ways, lol. I LOVE this city!!

Anyway, I purchased a few basics to make a dinner that would last a few days, and Tomas and I worked the rest of the day. We woke up on Thanksgiving, and after a relaxing cup of coffee and fresh juice drink for breakfast, we went to work, and worked all day – it was blissfully quiet, and once we got over not having any fresh pumpkin pie, and wishing we could have enjoyed a legitimate day off, we made some good headway into rebuilding a few music emulator banks for Reel 2, plus I got some work done on my novel.

If anyone is a “Dexter” fan, the real Thanksgiving for us was Sunday’s episode – Dexter’s Thanksgiving – “Hungry Man”. It just does not get any better than that.

Last week, Tomás sent off three versions of an important cue for “Ravana’s Game”

Last week, Tomás sent off three versions of an important cue for “Ravana’s Game” to director David Eblan. He likes all three, and has narrowed it down to two. The reason this cue is being called ‘important’ is simply because it is one of the main characters themes, and every time throughout the film, when we see this character, there will be a version of this theme around or under him. It may be featured, it maybe underscore, but it will be there. Consequently, it is important that both the Director and the Composer are happy with the cue.

This is the fifth ‘important’ cue insofar as establishing main characters themes. All of these have been in Reel One. There are new characters we meet in subsequent reels who will have their own personalized themes written. These themes make up the whole of the score.

Before Tomás can go on to Reel Two, and while David makes his final pick, Tomás has to go through every character’s theme, and start the dreaded “organizing”, a combination of Music Editing, assisting, and Composer assisting. The Composer is assisting…..himself. It almost has an “X” rated feel to it.

No such luck. It is lots of paperwork, cue organization via melody, harmony, instrumentation and elements. It requires a completely different head space than writing, and is often much more exhausting without the creative reward.

In a nutshell, Tomás would much rather be writing than doing this, however, this is absolutely necessary for the score to start flowing at a nice clip, with no need to suddenly be interrupted because something is ‘missing’, and the piles and piles of paperwork, and hundreds and hundreds of banks of sounds do not need to be searched through. Everything is in it’s place, and this is essential for optimal creativity and productivity.

Still, it is the drudge work, and the little I can do to speed things along, I do, but ultimately, it is his style of organizing, his office, his space, and his computer. As much as I wish I could wave the magic wand and have it be finished, it is his composers studio, and only he knows how he wants it organized.

I spent enough years assisting composer John Williams and his editor Ken Wannberg to know there came a point where there was nothing I could do to help them through the ’slosh pile’. I could only turn my attention to my own.

With Tomás, I am doing the same – dealing with my own piles of desperately needed organization, and remembering that I make a mean cup of coffee, a mean sandwich, and a mean scowl when I hold out a handful of vitamins to get him through the day.

Upward and Onward!

There is currently a new NES/Famicom emulator for Mac called MaciFom. It is brand spanking new and only for Mac OSX. In true OSX style it tries to take advantage of AppKit, OpenCL, CoreAudio, and OpenGL. Here is the information from their Homepage.

Cycle-exact CPU (6502) emulation for valid opcodes

Scanline-accurate rendering by the PPU

Windowed and full-screen display modes.

Controller input via keyboard.

Support for NROM, UNROM, CNROM and MMC1 mappers.

A debugger featuring live disassembly of program code, reading and writing of memory values, display of CPU registers, breakpoints and step-through of opcodes.

It is currently the fastest working GBA emulator, as it can run most games at full speed on a computer with an Intel Pentium or faster processor.

İşte emülasyon sevenlerin, görsel cümbüşlü, sanal zevkin doruklarına çıkaran son model oyunların yanında hala zevkle Captain Commando oynayabilmelerinin sırrı beynin emülasyon yeteneğinde yatmaktadır… Beynin çalışma şekli, o oyunu en heyecanla oynadığımız yaşlara dönebildiği oranda oyundan keyif alma oranımız da yükselmektedir… Psp’de gba romları çalıştırırken, game boy satın alamadığımız ancak bir arkadaşımızdan ödünç alarak oynadığımız sınırlı zamanların zevki de beynimizde emüle olmakta ve o anda alınan keyif gene tavan yapmaktadır… Bu örnekler düşündükçe çoğaltılabilir, anca ben şimdilik bu kadarla yetineceğim… Bu kadar laf salatasından sonra;

Sağolasan emülasyon!!!

I’m a little late posting this, by a day or so, but the Mac OSX version of SDL MAME saw an update. Several tweaks in the what’s new txt file. Check out what’s new and download from the link below.

0.134u2
-------

MAMETesters Bugs Fixed
----------------------
- 03403: [DIP/Input] rollfr_2: Can't init Roll Fruit game. (MetalliC)
- 03458: [Sound] bzone and clones: Broken engine sound (couriersud)

Source Changes
--------------
Added genuine sets of Rally-X and New Rally-X [Team Japump!!!]

discrete_sound_r now can inquiry any node: [couriersud]
- the return type is UINT8, consequently the designer needs to ensure
that the node delivers adequately scaled data.
- input nodes allow the input data to be scaled. The return value is
    the node value *after* scaling.

DISCRETE_74LS624 - optimized for some more speed. [Derrick Renaud]

DISCRETE_566 - started making a more accurate simulation based on
testing of a real IC. This makes the rest of Sky Raider sounds work.
[Derrick Renaud]

Completed dump of Gun Survivor 2 cart [Guru]

Hacked in the dsp56156's "Long Interrupts." Added SUB opcode.
Polygonet Commanders now goes in-game! [Andrew Gardner]

plygonet.c: hooked up 53936 roz layer. [R. Belmont, David Haywood]

Fleshed out SCC68070 definition in m68k core, for CD-i use in MESS
[Harmony]

m68k: disassemble PMOVE instruction (move to/from PMMU). [R. Belmont]

exp is slow, but pow is even slower [couriersud]
- more LS624 optimization, replace pow(10, x) by pow10(x)
- mixer loop optimizations

Impromved discrete performance for mario: [couriersud]
- pow to exp : 5%
- parallel tasks : 45%
- minor tweaks

M680x0 update: [R. Belmont]
- Add CPU types 68EC030, 68030, and 68EC040
- Start of 030/040 PMMU, including stubbed PMOVE

Fixed up RAM bank names to prevent crashes with memdump. Extended
explicit banks to 96. [Aaron Giles]

multfish.c driver fixes and improvements: [MetalliC]
- Hooked up inputs for Roll Fruit
- Added hopper emulation, payout now works
- Added information on how to initialize Roll Fruit
- Added in missing rom to a few MultiFish sets

DISCRETE_555_MSTABLE - optimized speed and added new operating modes.
[Derrick Renaud]

Fixed ROM name of warpwarp. Also removed 4th program ROM which is not
present on real board. [Team Japump!!!]

Memory references can now explicitly specify logical or physical
access by prepending with an 'l' or 'p'. Logical remains the default.
Example: ppb@1000 = physical program space byte at address $1000.
ldw@2000 = logical data space word at address $2000. Changed cheat
finder to explicitly reference physical memory when writing out new
cheats. [Aaron Giles]

Added simple system for auto-detecting cheat-worthy RAM areas.
[Sandro Ronco]

Added NULL check to prevent MAME from crashing if a new input device
was connected at runtime. [David Haywood]

Expanded PROFILER_USERx to support up to 8 custom profiler areas.
[Christophe Jaillet]

Added more _NAME macros to be consistent with the standard naming
conventions. [Atari Ace]

Shuffled code around to better integrate HazeMD implementation.
[David Haywood, Fabio Priuli]

Sped up mario_custom_run() discrete sound. [Derrick Renaud]

Added discrete sound to Sprint 8. [Derrick Renaud]

Removed capacitor aging code and assumed range input is gnd for all
74LS629. [couriersud]

Omplemented m:n logic for buffered task nodes in discrete sound
[couriersud]
- preparation work so that a task node output buffer may be read by
    more than one following task.
- target: implementation of task groups: tasks in a task group run
parallel, task groups serial. The current main task may than just
be task (in the last task group)

Space Walk - started discrete sounds. [Derrick Renaud]

Added static qualifiers where possible throughout the code.
[Atari Ace]

Discrete task groups [couriersud]
- DISCRETE_TASK_START now requires a parameter TASK_GROUP (>=0, <=9)
- Tasks are scheduled in the order of their task group
- Nodes are automatically buffered between task groups
- Discrete core determines nodes which need buffering to minimize
    overhead (information in DISCRETE_LOG)
- A discrete block list now must put each stepped node into a task
    if it uses tasks
- Drivers not using tasks will get one task allocated automatically
- Updated drivers accordingly
- Some more constification

Optimized tab removal in srcclean. [Atari Ace]

Centralized color definitions and made some colors more specific.
[Mamesick]

Hooked up Polynet Warriors joystick properly. [Andrew Gardner]

New games added or promoted from NOT_WORKING status
---------------------------------------------------
Othello (version 3.0) [Tomasz Slanina, Stefan Lindberg]

New clones added
----------------
