There will be wars and rumours of wars, there will be End of Times movies, but they are meaningless. If you want to hasten the true End, then get busy. In Acts 1:8, Jesus told us to “Go.” If we’ll get busy telling people about Him all around the world, then the End will come. As of now there are 639 people groups who have little or no access to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This totals almost 2 Billion people who haven’t even had the opportunity to reject Him.
What’s your excuse for not going or enabling someone else to go? Start by praying for the unreached, then pray about how the Lord will use you in the Great Commission.

In fact, just by writing about it, I’m playing into the hands of a big media company that hopes I will write about it, or at least pass the word and a link, so that they can ultimately make money. Rather, I’ll try to keep a few people from being frightened.

The story starts with Mike Brown, an astronomer at Caltech who has found more planet-like objects in our outer solar system than anyone.

Just like this reporter, Brown gets a lot emails from people worried the world will end in 2012. So many, in fact, that Brown has come to call them “The 2012 People.” He’s long assumed they’re rather gullible worry warts. His view just changed a little.
The concerns often stem from bogus information about a fantasy planet dubbed Nibiru which, the story goes, will swing into the inner solar system, smack Earth in 2012, and bring an end to it all. (Brown assures us there is no such planet, and no such looming scenario known to science.)

The emails have been increasing of late. And recently one concerned citizen went a step farther and called and left Brown a voice mail: “I’ve got kids; this really scares the hell out of me. Is there something I should be doing? Is this real?”

The planet hunter reassured the man that it was all just a hoax. The man was grateful.

But the man got Brown’s attention.

In the months since moving to Chicago there have been many eye-opening experiences. The city, in general, is a great place to learn. I’ve learned much about people, and how they relate to one another. I’ve learned much about work, and how it drives a city. I’ve learned much about listening, as everyone in this great city is simply dying for someone to listen to them. And I’ve learned much about authority, for the city, it seems is designed to take away my control.

In the past year I’ve also been constantly learning about myself.

Lately, I’m learning about my tendency to love the end of anything. And I’m still debating about whether or not this is healthy. I simply love to see completion, and for years I’ve been living in pursuit of ‘the end.’

It drives me. It gives me focus. It gives me hope through tiring days that something new will come, just as soon as I get to the end. I’m so quick to jump on the bandwagon of a 3 month project, or sign a 90 day contract.

…but it’s bred in me a very restless spirit that hates to stay put; like a child who can’t sit through church.

The danger in living within a fast paced, instant-coffee society is not just that we hate to wait on the ‘front-end’, but that we can’t hold on to anything for any length of time. We love ‘new’ things and therefore we also love the ‘end.’

It’s a flaky cycle.

Chicago is a start up and burn society where the average person stays only a couple years. For ten months now I’ve lived and worked in Chicago; one place, pursuing one thing, and the restless part of me is yearning for change, and an end. For the first time since venturing out on my own I can’t see an ‘end’ in the near future. For the first time since being on my own I’m feeling the weight of a ‘ten year’ tenure, and it’s wearing me weary.

It’s time to say enough. It’s time to settle in and say, “I’m camping out here for a while.”

I recently took the group here through a discussion on a picture of the end of all things, and I realized that my start up and burn desires have to change.

The picture we saw was of heaven, and the church in heaven was a unified entity and it was worshiping God and you get this sense that creation has once again been made good, it has been brought back to shalom, to all things Eden.

This is the end and the beginning of all things.

yet it’s still very far away.

It appears what I need is perspective, because my start up and burn life-philosophy doesn’t mesh with God’s philosophy. God, who started the process of redemption some 3,000 years ago, is committed to seeing it through to the end. Maybe I should try that one on for size?

My point in this is that I’m learning about the sticky subject of commitment. I’m learning that ‘flash in the pan’ ministry is never really a ‘flash in the pan.’ There is no get-in-and-get-out military missions in Urban ministry. Ministry, and especially ministry in the city is a long road.

So here’s to a renewed perspective, and here’s to my first ten-year, tenure…

Dear Friend in Christ,

 This letter was recently sent to me and my siblings. This first paragraph has been changed to be a little more generic. The original letter contained some personal greetings in this first paragraph that only family could appreciate. You have been selected to receive this letter from someone who cares about you and your family, and more importantly cares about Christ and his Church. I want to personally urge you to read this carefully and select some people who are important in your life to receive this letter from you.

Feel free to delete this first paragraph and fill in with a personal greeting from you to the person you have selected to receive it. I hope you will keep the essence of the following letter intact. Although it is just one Christian’s thoughts on the scripture and our jobs as Christians, it was worded with a great deal of prayer. It is hoped that God played a big part in the wording and to him goes all the glory and praise. I will pray that you receive this letter with the assurance that I have prayed for it’s accuracy and inspiration. I will also pray that you devote some time to reading it and putting it into action and passing it along to others. I really feel a strong sense (if not extreme sense) of urgency in sharing with you something that is really on my mind. I feel that our country has really fallen away from God and I feel he is not pleased at all. I have been very lax over the years in my Bible study and have not always been a faithful churchgoer. Thankfully, I found renewed interest and zeal a few years back and have found a place where I can be effective as a Christian and try to make up for lost time. Although nobody understands God’s timing, I personally feel that the end times are quickly approaching. It seems to me that current events really fit a lot of the prophesy that the Bible offers to us. I can see future events poised to happen that fit as well. I have really felt a strong sense of becoming more of a warrior for God and for all that is good, although I know I have many shortcomings. I have read and reread and reread Ephesians chapter 6 regarding the armor of God. I am sure you have read it and are familiar with it. Paraphrased and shortened, it tells us to stand firm, and to buckle the belt of truth around our waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, our feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. We are to take up the shield of faith which will extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. Every time I read this scripture, I feel emboldened and feel that no evil can come to me with this armor on. Sometimes, I feel that some of the armor has not yet been properly fitted to me, but I’m working on that. The same scripture also tells us that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:18 continues: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” This has caused me to consider the spiritual wars that take place. The every day battles of good verses evil. We can all see the systematic elimination of God from our country. God was the basis and the foundation of the establishment of the United States. Now you can scarcely find his name associated anywhere with our government. We have all become numb to the current happenings and calloused against the outcome. Sometimes I feel that one person is helpless in this battle. We can send emails around the country to our friends and associates about the current events, but it seems as if nobody reacts to these other than to express their dismay in agreement. This has caused me to think more about how to fortify our side and to work against evil. It was called to my attention this past Sunday when our sermon was on 1 Samuel:17. This is a story with which you all are familiar–David and Goliath. Armies would not stand up against Goliath. The shepherd David felt called to battle against the giant. David knew that God, who had delivered him from lions and bears as he attended sheep, would also deliver him against the Philistine. He went into battle against what seemed an overwhelming foe, armed only with five smooth stones and his sling. We all know what happened. David told the giant “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied”. 1 Samuel 17:47 states “All those gathered here will know that it is not by the sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” I believe that it is imperative that we lean upon God in our spiritual battle and to have strong faith like David. This all has caused me to ponder how to be a warrior for God. It has caused me to study prayer, and the power of prayer, and how to pray. This has changed how I personally pray. I found myself guilty of using my standard cookie-cutter prayer way too often. It had almost become without meaning, with it’s myriad of standard catch-phrases that were repeated with each prayer. Although I think every prayer is important, maybe we all need to reconsider how we pray. God is deserving of great-great praise and glorification. Examples of prayer found in the bible begin with praise to God. I have begun to really, sincerely praise God for individual circumstances that I find praise-worthy. Glorify God. Give thanks to God. Sincerely and reverently give thanks to God for whatever you think is deserving of thanks. Present God with specific petitions (such as for the leaders of our country, that they call upon God for guidance and that God will intervene in their decisions). Tell God that there are still good, believing, and faithful Christians within our nation and to give us guidance and wisdom and the armor we need for our battle. Pray for the churches and their leaders. Pray specifically for your own needs. Always glorify God because of the sacrifice of his Son for us and be thankful each time for this sacrifice and pray in the name of his Son. 1 Corinthians 12 speaks of spiritual gifts which may individually be given out, with different ones receiving different gifts with the end result be the common good of all. Because of this, as I try to be a warrior, I ask for spiritual gifts in my prayers. Pray sincerely with extreme reverence, from the heart, and from your emotions. Hebrews 5:7 says: “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.” Never minimize your prayers because of their power. I think we should pray from our heart like a good musician makes music from his heart. I believe that you fight evil with good. Every time a believer does a good deed with God’s will in mind, and for the purpose of glorifying God’s name, then evil suffers a setback. Whether it is visiting the sick, helping a widow, supporting the poor, or any other good deed, we glorify God and all that is good and help defeat evil. My prayers have come to include asking God for my awareness of ways to be of service to Him. It is amazing the things that he points out to me. I ask him to give me the ability to see needs around me and the abilities to attend to those needs. We should make ourselves stand out as Christians to those around us. The moon reflects the light of the sun, and like the moon, Christians should reflect the glory of God to our associates. People should be able to quickly determine that we are Christians by our actions and our words. Like I began this letter, I feel a real sense of urgency–extreme urgency. I know that I am preaching to the choir, because we are all believers, brought up in the same home, with like beliefs. I hope that this does not sound presumptuous, but I sincerely ask each of you to do the following: Pray reverently every day, if not twice daily or more. Glorify God with much praise. Pray for strength, guidance and wisdom. Study prayer. Pray with EXTREME reverence and sincerity. Pray for our country and it’s leaders. Pray that God’s Will be done. Pray that God influences the decisions of our leaders. Ask him to block evil at every turn within our country. Do good service for God without ceasing, routinely. Fight evil with goodness. Spread the seeds of the Word mentioned in the parable. Pray that many seeds fall on fertile ground. Make every attempt to bring souls to Christ, especially within our families and circles of friends. Take a look at your immediate and extended family and minister to those whom you believe may fall short, or have not committed to the Lord, or have physical needs. I pray that you will redouble your efforts to help family members find salvation. Also, identify close friends and associates who need a closer relationship with God, or other special needs and minister to them as well. Routinely read the bible and pray for wisdom and understanding. Finally, and extremely important! Pray about this letter. I have prayed a lot about it before I sent it to you. I have prayed that the words are exactly accurate with His will. I have prayed that it is well received. I have prayed that it will be multiplied a million times or more. Prayerfully identify five associates, or friends, or family scattered here and there and send them this letter. Please pray reverently for each person you pick to receive this letter. Pray that they take the time to read it carefully and pray that they take it to heart. This letter can be rewritten if you wish, but I hope you will keep the essence of it the same, and pray for it’s accuracy and inspiration. I feel it would be good to send this letter to five people whom you believe are strong in the faith, and firmly rooted in the Lord so that they might use their God-given wisdom and pray fervently. I think it would be good to include a personal greeting to your intended recipient, as this may make it more a personal plea to family or friends. Going back to 1 Samuel 17, David went to a stream and selected five smooth stones and put them in his pouch and with his sling, went off to face the giant. Using our faith, I hope we can picture ourselves as “David-like“ because of his faith and courage. Pray that we do have strong faith and courage. Pray that with faith in the Lord, we will also be mighty warriors for God. I do think it is a little symbolic and thought provoking–that I am sending out to my family five letters. Which of these five letters will ultimately be the stone that slays the giant? If each of you will send it on to five people and they commit to sending it to five people, and so-on, just within 10 cycles of being multiplied (if nobody drops the cause), it will have reached almost 49,000,000 people. Think of the power of 49,000,000 fervent prayers offered to God on a routine basis. Please hurry! Time is of the essence!

As I’ve stated in other POSTS, although the End Times Events seem to be taking place at a pace which is shocking,  the events  themselves should not be shocking to Christians….for it was all foretold, thousands of years ago.

Are you as tired of hearing about the End-of-Times as I am? If one is to believe all the hullabaloo, we humans have slightly more than 3 years to live until catastrophe strikes.

The ancient Egyptians predicted a great disaster would come in the year 2012, crazy present-day Belgians, Canadians, and Americans are forming survival groups to prepare for total global meltdown in the same year. Even the folks at N.A.S.A. are all predicting a sharp increase in the number of sun flares and sunspots in 2012. Nostradamus, unsurprisingly, got in on the act, too. Of course, if one writes several hundred vague quatrains promising future doom and gloom, some of them are bound to hit on something gruesome.

Perhaps the biggest fuss of all is being made by the Chicken Littles (or Chickens Little, if Little is a family name) who point to the ancient Mayan calendar and claim that the sky is falling. Alarmists of several nations are pointing to the fact that the Mayan long count cycle will come to it’s 5,125-year end on or about the 21st of December, 2012.

I am no expert on the Mayan calendar but, having studied their art and pulled out most of my hair spending several months trying to remember Mayan names and the meaning of lord-knows-how-many Mayan glyphs in college, I came to learn that  there was no culture more accurate in their observation of the stars and the passage of time. Their calendar was long the most accurate that anyone had devised, pre-dating our Gregorian calendar by several centuries. It’s even believed they came up with the concept of the zero about 400 years before the mathematicians of India (though one must give the Sumerians their due for coming up with the zero first and blame others for promptly losing that knowledge.). In short, apart from the occasional thorn-spiked rope-through-the-tongue bloodletting business, the Mayans knew what the hell they were doing.

It’s just that they never said the end of this 5,125-ish-year cycle meant the end of the world. I think they just meant it will be the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. That’s it. One would think desperate Republicans would be latching on to this as they start gearing up for the 2012 presidential race. It wouldn’t be any more crazy then what the Doomsday survivalists are doing.

Where am I headed with this, you might ask? Well, all this End-of-Times crazy is driving me to drink, not that I need to be driven far. If I decide to buy into the brewing hysteria, I am liable to drown my sorrows in appropriately-themed Mexican cocktails.

If these kooks are correct and the end of the world is, in fact, nigh, I say drink up. Why worry about liver damage if the world is coming to an end? If they are wrong and the end isn’t so very nigh and I wake up to a clear sky and the sweet warbling of  Franklin Street  traffic on the 22nd of December, 2012, I am going to have one hell of a bad hangover. I’m going to need something to soak up three years-worth of margaritas.

I’m going to need chilaquiles– the sure-fire, Mexican breakfast of hung-over champions. And I’m going to need a lot of it.  I will be prepared. I will stock up like the survivalists on corn tortillas and red chili sauce. I will hoard cojita cheese.

If, for some reason, the Mayans were off by a day and the 22nd of December winds up being even more of a hell-on-earth than the Holiday season has already made that particular time of year, as long as I’ve had a heaping plate of chilaquiles, some fried eggs, and a few bites of beans, I’ll feel fine. Really, I will.

And then, if my pen has not yet vaporized or been covered in volcanic ash, I will write a rather contrite letter of apology to those not-so-crazy Doomsdayers.

Chilaquiles

According to Chow.com, the word “chilaquiles” refers to a “broken-up old sombrero.” This is, in my opinion, a direct and charming way of telling the reader that this dish is–though quite delicious in a functional, comforting sort of way–  not going to be very pretty. According to Urban Dictionary, “chilaquile” can be used as a substitute for nearly any noun, verb, or adjective. An extreme example, of course, would be “Those chilaquiles were so chilaquilin’ good that I nearly chilaquiled myself right there in the chilequile-ing restaurant.” In other words, a less direct and even less charming way of telling the reader that something is– though quite delicious in a functional, comforting sort of way–  not going to be very pretty.

This dish is very easy to make and very difficult to screw up. In other words, it’s the perfect thing to make when one is hung over. Combined with eggs (scramble or, better yet, fried), and a dollop of Mexican crema, this dish will soothe and soak up anything the past 5,125 years or so has thrown at you.

Serves 2 to 4, depending upon the size of the hangover.

Ingredients:

For the Chilaquiles:

12 corn tortillas. Stale ones are ideal, but if there is no such thing as a stale corn tortilla in your household or you would never admit to it, buy some fresh and leave them to sit out overnight.

Vegetable oil (preferably corn oil, which you can call maize oil, if that helps you in any way)

About 2 cups of some sort of Mexican cuisine-derived sauce. Elise Bauer over at Simply Recipes offers an excellent and, of course, simple salsa verde recipe for this particular dish; The Food Network, if you are into them at all, can provide you with a great red chili sauce. There is no one, correct sauce to use here. Experiment to find your favorite version*.

Toppings:

Popular toppings include:

Cojita cheese, or queso fresco

Crema Mexicana, or crème fraîche, if you want to re-visit the short-lived, ill-fated, French-backed Mexican Empire.

Finely diced red onion

A squeeze of lime

torn up bits of roasted chicken

Avocado

Cilantro

Tiny Mexican flags

Unpopular toppings include:

Spanish, Austrian, French, or U.S. flags of any size

Preparation:

1. Cover the bottom a good-sized (read: large, preferably cast iron) skillet with about 1/8 inch of oil. When the oil is hot and a test piece of tortilla sizzles, add its brother and sister pieces to the pan– making sure to coat all of them– and fry until golden brown. Remove tortillas from the pan and drain on paper towels. Salt them generously. Wipe pan to remove any stray, brown pieces of tortilla.

2. Add about 2 tablespoons of oil to the same pan and heat through. Pour in salsa and cook for a few minutes to thicken slightly, then add tortilla pieces. Make certain all the pieces are well-coated by turning them gently in the sauce. If you break a few, I dare say it shouldn’t matter much, given the dish’s likening to a broken-up old sombrero. Let the mixture cook until most of the sauce has been absorbed, which is not more than five minutes, but not less than two. Remove from heat.

4. Heap the now-ready chilaquiles onto a platter and garnish with any of the above garnishes you wish. Serve warm.

*In the true spirit of hangover food, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to purchase pre-made sauce. There are several good, reputable brands. Seriously. You can call me Sandra Lee if you want to, but unless you are the type (A) kind of personality who plans ahead for his/her hangovers, the fewer steps to breakfast, the better.

I first heard the term Berean two years ago and needed an explanation, followed up with my own research of the word. In short, the Bereans were those who heard Paul preach about God and would then pour over the Scriptures eagerly to make sure he was speaking the truth (Acts 17:10-12). They did not idly hear a message and accept it as truth without first verifying it.

It was with a very sad heart that I accepted my own shortcomings in this area. For most of my life, I have accepted everything a pastor has said as truth because, well, they’re a pastor. They’re supposed to know this stuff, right? Isn’t that their job?

The link above is very thorough concerning the history of the Bible. So many people take advantage of our freedom to have the Bible – if you’re one of them, make sure you look at it’s history. The Bible has only been available in homes, generously speaking, for 200 years. Many people died along the way, insisting on access to it and burned at the stake because of their insolence in the “eyes” of the so-called “church.”

Getting back on track, I believe we have allowed ourselves to get lazy. It’s so much easier to let someone else read it and then give us their interpretation, right? Of course! Just like it’s so much easier to watch someone else exercise, but doing so benefits you NOTHING.

You sacrifice time and effort for things that are important to you. I encourage you to get into the Word yourself and stop relying on others to spoon feed it to you. You will only grow to a certain point that way. When Paul was speaking to the church in Corinth, he said (1 Corinthians 3:2), “I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able.”

I don’t want to drink milk the rest of my life – I need the meat. We all need the meat.  I believe the access to the Bible and the availability of it everywhere is a sign of the end of times. The chasm between people who believe and those who do not is growing wider and wider. Be sure you know where you stand and what you believe and why you believe it. You can’t regurgitate what somebody else has said, because it won’t be real to you. Get your own fire, your own oil and chase after God. He will let you catch Him!
