After an epic 45 hour punctuated session of gaming, my journey in Dragon Age has come to an end … for now. It was a bitter-sweet ending — the Archdemon was slain (this surely can’t be a spoiler if you were paying any attention at all), life goes on, my fellowship of NPC companions split up and everyone went their separate ways. I think I did right by them, mostly, but at the end it was just me and my faithful dog, Bitey, and the long open road.

Was my character still the same self-centred but basically well-meaning casteless Carta bruiser that was introduced in the dwarf commoner origin? I think so, but she’d changed. She’d seen the world above, faced horrors underground, faced her inner demons on a religious pilgrimage, and locked horns with some hard bitten political mavens in the Landsmeet. And killed lots of darkspawn, too. A story where the characters have room to change and grow is a good story. My Dragon Age story could easily have been told from the perspective of any one of the companions too, because they also changed and grew and faced their own inner demons.

I enjoyed reading how other peoples’ stories ended in an rpg.net thread setup for the purpose (link is full of spoilers, you’ve been warned). Because rpg.net was originally a community of pen and paper roleplayers, you’ll see a lot of people describe how they RPed their characters, why they made decisions IC, and where that led.

And although there are good endings and less good endings (depending on your point of view), I don’t get the feeling that this is a game that you win or lose. Either way, you have your own story.  I’ve also felt strongly while playing Dragon Age that I wanted to talk to people about how their stories were going, what choices they made, and to compare experiences. Even though it’s a single player game, it was an experience I very much wanted to share.

And now, I’m already planning on playing through it again:

• I want to try playing on a harder mode now that I understand the mechanics more fully.
• I want to play through as different origins and races.
• I want to  learn more about the lore by playing through the game differently. How does Orzammar treat non-dwarves? Does the Landsmeet treat you differently if you are a human noble?
• I want to tinker around with the storyline by trying different options and seeing what happens.
• I want to get to know different companions. I only had time to strike up in depth relationships with a handful of them.
• My dwarf girl was not the romantic type. (I laughed at Zevran and told him to get lost when he called me a sex goddess.) I’d like to play a more romantic type and see how some of those play out.
• I’d like to do more of the sidequests and dragon slaying. In my play through, I decided that stopping the Blight was my first priority so I didn’t want to waste too much time or take too many risks outside hat.
• I want to try some of the DLC content – I could do that on my main character but it might be more storywise to run through it on a second one.

So there’s plenty of incentive to keep playing the game, although I think I’ll take a break first. One thing I do note though – I have this notion of ‘playing around with the story’. I’ll be able to go back in and try out some ‘what if’s. There’s no other media than games in which you can approach a story in that way. To rewind and try different choices or different approaches and then see what happens. You can’t do that with a book (barring game books) or a film.

The experience players have with the Dragon Age story isn’t just of going through cut scenes and railroaded platform or combat sequences. You engage with the actual story as a gamer. Your choices drive it, your roleplaying decisions guide it,  and although you control the direction, you can’t always predict how the story will go because it drives you too. The story is the keystone of the game, and its emotional heart.

Is it limited? Yes, it’s only a computer game, and what you end up with are variations on a theme rather than radically, utterly different stories. But I think they are different enough and interesting enough to compel me to want to play with the possibilities given.

I dismiss  the complaints about lack of originality. The best parts of the game are the less original sections, and all fantasy relies on using existing mythical threads to weave a story that appeals to people on a very instinctive level.

For example, the section where you search for the Ashes of Andraste is very clearly based on the Arthurian grail quest. There are monsters to fight, hardships, moral dilemmas, puzzles, revelations and a strong sense of religious pilgrimage. But even a story so well known as the quest for the grail feels fresh and different when you are experiencing it alongside your character. If the emotional core of the story is present and is appealing and FUN, it really doesn’t matter if it is original or not.

(Conversely, it’s easy to tell an unusual story in a way that’s confusing or fails to grab people.)

Issues and Pacing

I love Dragon Age but the game isn’t perfect. There are ways in which it could be streamlined and better presented, although I think the game does succeed totally in many ways.

It is a long game. Sections like the Mage Tower and the Deep Roads can drag, especially if you try to play them through in a single session. But it also simulates a long and difficult journey very well. The sense of ‘oh no, not another set of darkspawn’ is part of the story being told.

From a gameplay point of view, it’s open to discussion whether some segments are too drawn out. (It would be slicker to have decided what the optimal length of game session was and to design the sub-quests around that baseline.) But that decision is an artistic storytelling decision on pacing, not a gameplay one on ‘how many mobs should be in that pack to challenge the player?’

I enjoyed the sense of the long and drawn out journeys in my quests so I don’t have an issue with the pacing there. But as I say, that’s a subjective opinion, others may differ or might have wanted an option to let the game know that you wanted things sped up.

The end game doesn’t allow enough time to tie up loose ends emotionally with the rest of the NPC companions. If you’ve gotten very close to any of them, it would have been nice to have some extended conversation options on the night before the last battle, it would have given a better sense of closure. Tamarind discusses his story here (spoilers behind the link) and explains why he really needed to have words with Alistair … if the game had allowed it.

The DLC is handled awkwardly at the end. The problem here with the storytelling is that this game definitely has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The DLC should logistically happen in the middle while your character is out adventuring and before the final battle. But clearly players are going to finish the story and Bioware still wants to sell DLC to them.  So after the final set of cut scenes and ‘this is what happened to your companions afterwards’, you’re left back in camp and told that for the purpose of ‘continuing your adventures’ you can assume you’re back in the midgame.

I don’t have the heart to really complain about this. I’m glad I had my neat ending and wouldn’t have wanted to skip that just to leave my character in a convenient spot storywise for DLC. A story that was designed at the start to have up to two years of optional but available DLC wouldn’t be able to have that neat ending, it would be more MMO like. Maybe in future games, they’ll have better ideas for how to make this gel more neatly.

Anyway, I’m back to Lothering with my new mage-in-search-of-a-husband. Instead of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it’ll be like Pride and Prejudice with Darkspawn.

And thank you Bioware, for restoring my faith in storytelling in computer games.

La gran serie Gundam Wing contó a su finalización con unas O.V.A.s llamadas “The Endless Waltz“, para las que se compuso un impresionante tema llamado White Reflection. La canción estaba interpretada por el conocido grupo de Pop electrónico Two-Mix, formado por aquél entonces por Shiina Nagano (escritor de las canciones y teclista) y Minami Takayama (vocalista).

Minami además de ser cantante es una Seiyuu muy conocida sobre todo por prestar su voz al célebre personaje de Conan Edogawa, el protagonista de la popular Detective Conan. De hecho Two Mix interpretó también uno de los Openings de la serie, sin duda debido al hecho que Minami llegó a estar casada con el propio autor de la obra, Gosho Aoyama, por lo que “todo quedaba en casa”. Minami también ha interpretado a otros personajes muy conocidos en el mundo del Anime, como a Kiki de Kiki’s Delivery Service o a mi adorada Nabiki Tendo de Ranma 1/2, así como a Yaiba y a Moomin, de las series del mismo nombre respectivamente.

En el excelente videoclip que os presentamos a continuación aparecen unas “versiones animadas” de los componentes de Two-Mix, interpretando el conocido tema White Reflection mientras nos cuentan una peculiar historia de fantasía en la que los miembros del grupo son los protagonistas. Fue una original manera de promocionar el disco que como de costumbre aparecería después recogiendo el tema White Reflection de Gundam Wing. La obra ya había brillado especialmente en su apartado musical con la partitura compuesta por el genial Kou Otani (autor de la B.S.O. de Shakugan no Shana y del videojuego Shadow of the Colossus), así como por otras canciones estupendas también interpretadas por Two-Mix, como los dos openings: Just Communication y Rythm Emotion. Espero que disfrutéis de este tema tan impactante y tan desbordante de fuerza y de ritmo, así como por la propia calidad artística del videoclip.

Presenting involves a contract between audience and presenter, and clearly stated starting and ending times are a key part of that contract. Compliance with these requirements is an important indicator of the health of that contract and the respect that both sides have for each other.

Start on Time

As presenter you control the room. You are going to be that group’s leader for however long you keep the stage. As with all groups, there is an initial period of gentle testing where the group explores the behavioral boundaries around them. “How firm is the leader going to be?” “Do they stick to their promises?” “Who is in charge?”

Although frequently sub-conscious, these questions are all hanging around the room, and there is no truer way of testing out the answers than by testing the area of time! If members of the audience are late, and you wait for them, then you allow power to transfer from yourself, to them. If you stick to your guns however and start regardless, then you retain the power balance for yourself, and late-comers become merely that; late!

Courtesy

If you hold up proceedings till all the laggards have assembled then the individuals who did extend you the courtesy of an on-time arrival rapidly learn that there is no reward for being on schedule. Your priority is to those who were on time. Don’t keep them waiting for others.

Finish on time

As important as starting on time, is finishing on time. While the start time is all about the audience extending courtesy to the presenter, it is by respecting the stated finish time that the presenter repays that respect. If the presentation is to last 30 minutes, then keep it to 30 minutes! Presenters who over-run are rewarded with seat-shuffling and increasingly exaggerated watch-checking.

What about the VIP?

I started out this blog by talking about power, and how within the presentation environment you are the leader. Where does this leave VIP members of the audience and what to do if it’s the head-honcho who is the tardy one?

The subject of the power dynamic between presenters and VIP’s would take up a whole extra blog, so I will restrict this point purely to the area of time-keeping.

If you are presenting, and you know that there is an especially important person in the room who must be there to hear what you have to say, then it would be foolish to start without them. The mere fact that someone in authority is abusing that position by being late rather than setting a positive example by being on time already indicates that they have a powerful sense of ego, so it would be a mistake to deliberately attempt to deflate that ego, tempting as it might be.

There is however, a half-way house that will allow you to start on time, while still waiting for the late VIP. The technique is to start a discussion with your audience while you are waiting so that the awkward gap becomes productively filled.

• Welcome your audience as you would normally, thanking them for attending, and briefly outlining the presentation agenda and objectives.
• State that you are going to wait a few more moments for Mr or Ms X to arrive, and then immediately tell the audience that in order to use this time productively, you would like to go around the table and find something out from them.
• Use the ensuing discussion time to find out something relevant to your presentation. You have full control of what this subject will be; It could be their past experience with a product or process, their key objectives for the presentation, or their opinions about key challenges and opportunities faced.
• Select a subject area that supports the thrust of your presentation, and avoid contentious areas that might detract from your message.
• As you facilitate the discussion, capture key points onto a flip-chart so that they then remain visible for the rest of the session.

When the late VIP does then arrive, you can welcome them cordially, gently close down the discussion, and move into the planned body of your presentation. What has happened though is that you are now starting from a position of vastly increased strength. By being late, the VIP has given you the chance to work the room and develop a rapport with their team. You now have comments and people that you can refer back to for support as you present.

Above all, you kept control of the process, and without inflaming anyone’s egos, remained in charge of the room!

Naprawdę świetnie się z nimi rozmawia i pod żadnym pozorem nie mam zamiaru rezygnować z tych znajomości. Do tego dochodzi moje lenistwo, które już znane. I na tym to się wszystko opiera. Teraz mi jeszcze dojdzie radio, to ja już nie wiem. Ale nie chce rezygnować z bloga, co to to nie! Nie dam Wam o sobie zapomnieć ani nic takiego. Jestem zła na siebie i to bardzo, że nic nie piszę. Tears of sadness are something all of us experience at times. Melancholy that what was to be could never be. That our expectations for the world around us were wrong or at least were in fact misled.

“The Oprah Winfrey Show,” an iconic broadcast that grew from a local Chicago talk show into the foundation of a multibillion dollar media empire, will end its run in 2011 after 25 seasons on the air, Winfrey’s production company said Thursday night.

Winfrey, who became one of the most powerful women in entertainment from a seat on the couch of her set in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, plans to announce the final date for her show during a live broadcast on Friday, Harpo Productions Inc. said.

A Harpo spokeswoman declined to comment Thursday on Winfrey’s future plans except to say that “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will not be transferred to cable television.

Winfrey is widely expected to start up a new talk show on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, a much-delayed joint venture with Discovery Communications Inc. that is expected to debut in 2011. OWN is to replace the Discovery Health Channel and will debut in some 70 million homes.

CBS Television Distribution, which distributes “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to more than 200 markets blanketing the United States, held out hope that it could continue doing business with Winfrey, perhaps producing a new show out of its studios in Los Angeles.

Oprah Winfrey will announce on Friday’s “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that she is ending the talk show after 23 years, a spokesman for Winfrey’s Harpo Productions said.

I came home from work today and went through the ritual of starting up my computer and clicking on gmail. To my surprise, I was logged out of my email account. That could only mean one thing. Peter came by earlier today to pick up his bicycle. Naturally, he used my computer without my permission. Upon checking my browser history I come to the realisation that Peter knows. He might not know every little detail of what I did while he was away but he knows that the reason I was no longer in love with him is because I had been sleeping around. My initial reaction was understandably one of anger; that he invaded my privacy yet again. I was angry that I didn’t trusted him still even after everything we’ve been through all ready and failed to put a password lock on my computer. I was angry that he had the gall to use my computer without permission despite the fact that he hasn’t lived in this house for almost 6 weeks now.

But once that anger faded, I was surprised to feel relief wash over me. At the realisation that he knew, and my world hasn’t come crashing down on me – I was relieved. I’d rather he know… for my conscience. The only reason I wanted to keep it from him was to spare his feelings, but he didn’t seem to want to be kept in the dark. If I were in his place, I’d probably rather not know than snoop around his emails but we’re a very different breed he and I. And that’s why it has all ended the way that it has.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not excusing anything I did because of things that he did. I know what I did was wrong, but I also don’t know that I would have handled things differently. I have to say that despite my relief at his recent discovery, I am still feeling a little anxiety about whether or not my world is going to come crashing down on me. He seems to be taking the discovery well, and that’s not the Peter I know. I’m surprised he hasn’t called me to chew my ear out or something similar.

Ugh. I’m sick today and really can’t handle this added discomfort. Wishing someone was here to take care of me.

Esta canción, From Dusk Till Dawn, es la que nos encontramos en el ending de la 2ª Temporada de “Darker Than Black”. Hasta ahora no la teníamos entera, solo esa pequeña parte.

Abingdon Boys School es el grupo de música japonés que lo interpreta, apareciendo por tercera vez en la música de esta historia; ya que también se encargaron del opening de la 1ª temporada, con “Howling“, y posteriormente, con “The Hero Without A Name“.

El disco que contiene esta canción saldrá el 16 de Diciembre.

El vídeo que os dejo aquí abajo está grabado por un fan que fue al concierto que dió este grupo, de ahí que la calidad no sea muy buena, pero es mejor que nada  ^^

I watched K-On, the whole 13 episodes and got a moe overload. *Ui is my favorite*

Their song is amazing, I felt like that I have to sing them all, but it’s too high since it originally pitched for females. But then I found those male versions on youtube. Now that make things easier.

I pitched down the song, got comfortable…. NOT. It’s still as high as hell (or heaven? LOL). But this song is still in my range, no problem…. I guess…

no flaming though

Well I finally have gotten around this week to listening to Dashboard Confessional’s new album “Alter the Ending.”  I only have the regular version and not the deluxe with all the acoustic.  I have to say that Dashboard Confessional’s sixth studio album is the best so far.  The history of this band started out as one person and expanded to a whole band.  And it just keeps getting better.  This album is worth buying the entire thing.  The only complaint I have is that a few songs in the middle sound a little too similar and made me tune out a little.  But It starts out strong with “Get Me Right” and ends with a bang with “Hell on the Throat.”

Great writing and beats.  Well worth it.
