As a footnote to Chris Moody’s post about Monday’s 20-year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, I just came across this article about red deer refusing to cross from Germany into the Czech Republic. This, of course, is a border that was the once heavily fortified dividing line between free West Germany and captive Czechoslovakia.

Catholic League: Why does Obama like ‘Christian basher’
By Bob Unruh

*** begin quote ***

The president of the Catholic League is questioning why President Obama would select Kevin Jennings, known as a “Christian basher” in addition to his homosexual activism, to instruct public school children on “moral matters.”

WND has reported multiple times on the background of Jennings, who founded the “Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network,” which promotes homosexuality in public schools across the nation.

*** end quote ***

[JR: We've already rant about how the horse has long left the barn. But why do we tolerate this. Paid for by our taxes. Hopefully we can have "justice" and "charity" for all. I think why the Senator with the 100% liberal rating for his two years would pick a raving loon is obvious. They reflect him. A President usually gets to work on two or three big issues and make a dozen key appointments. That's what Regan said. And, that's his legacy. I think we're seeing the result. Argh!]

Ja, das wär was!

Schade schade.

Doch es gibt nichts, was tatsächlich an unsere Wünsche angepasst ist: keep it simple.

The remarkable story of a group of Holocaust survivors who hid in one of the world’s largest caves.

She taught us early on that no matter who it was, if they told you to do one thing, you always did the opposite. If the Germans said, ‘Go to the ghettos, you’ll be safe there,’ you went to the forest or the mountains. You went as far away from the ghettos as you could go.”

[JR: I wasn't sure if this should be a POSITRACTION or an ENDNOTE. So I made it both. Read the story on this webpage. ENDNOTE the incompetency of evil and the gooferment.

A very warm welcome to new Sebe students starting at the University recently, and of course to returning students back from the Summer break.

It’s been a busy time of year for everyone, but I thought I’d just welcome all the Sebe students and let you all know that the Sebe WebPages have been revamped to make them a lot clearer and accessible. Also I should let you know about the new “Skills for Learning” WebPages on the Learning Centre’s website. This has been revised and updated over the Summer and is now a one-stop place for study skills advice and appointments, details of this semester’s InfoBites workshops, full information about the University’s referencing systems, and the EndNote support WebPages.

Finally the Harvard referencing guide has been updated to include an example list of different sources which will hopefully make the system easier to follow.

Anyway, good luck for the year ahead and keep your eyes on the blog for more updates and news regarding Sebe.

See you soon

Dakota State University makes the bibliographic management program EndNote available to students through the Mundt Library (I know I downloaded a copy from the Mundt website… but I can’t remember where!). Our tuition or student fees or tax dollars are paying for it, so I guess it can’t hurt to use it.

But you and our university can find a cheaper and better alternative for managing your research sources and notes in Zotero, an open-source bibliography manager that a fellow student introduced me to last spring. I dig it… and so does the National Science Foundation. NSF has been using Zotero in-house for a while, and they’re sufficiently satisfied that they’ve hired the Zotero.org team to build a customized version for them.

What can you do when you have a document with references made by EndNote but you want to work with R

What can you do when you have a document with references made by EndNote but you want to work with RefWorks? Well, that’s not so easy: EndNote and RefWorks are not compatible in this way. The code these programs put in your Word-document are different, so RefWorks can’t recognize references made by EndNote. In my opinion there are three possibilities, and it depends on how much work you have already done (or have to do) which option you should choose.

Option 1: When you’re almost finished, use EndNote to complete the paper you’re working on and use RefWorks for all future documents.

Option 2: Delete the EndNote references and replace them by references made with Write-n-Cite. Obviously this works when there is just a small number of references in your document.

Option 3: Use the option Remove Field Codes in EndNote. This will save your document with references and bibliography at the end of the document, but the connection with EndNote is lost. Use Write-n-Cite to enter the rest of the references. But, be carefull: the bibliografphy RefWorks makes at the end of the document will only have the titles you’ve entered with Write-n-Cite. You’ll have to merge the lists from EndNote and RefWorks manually. RefWorks also won’t see if you have refered to the same title before in the document, so check the references. In some styles the second reference to the same title is shorter.

Hundreds of Thousands of Pro-Life Students to Stand in Solidarity on Abortion
by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
October 12, 2009

*** begin quote ***

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Hundreds of thousands of pro-life students are ready to stand in solidarity on abortion as the Pro-life Day of Silent Solidarity takes place a week from Tuesday. Last year, from over 4,700 campuses in 25 countries participated in the event and sponsors expect even more this year.

The day sees the students at middle and high schools and on college campuses wear pro-life t-shirts, sport red tape on their mouths to show how the unborn can’t speak up, and the distribution of fliers educating students and the public about abortion.

The event’s man sponsor, Stand True Ministries, tells LifeNews.com, one of several groups supporting the event, that at least 58 young women canceled appointments for abortions after the special day took place last year.

Bryan Kemper, the pro-life group’s president, says students are always excited every year to bring attention to the devastating travesty of abortion that is killing 4,000 unborn children and injuring women every day.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Interesting to see the children "speaking" up. Personally, I wonder if we have allowed the "abortion" of the gal who would cure cancer, the boy who'd break Jeter's record, or the next Gandhi who would bring us the "world peace" as often wished by beauty contest participants. The German people have never recovered from the shame of what was done to the Jews. Will we be regarded the same way? Will future generations look at this, askance, like the Salem Witch Trials? And, now with the supposedly "health care" bill, we're going to get abortions regardless of the consequences. Will this be the issue that splits the nation? Will this be the long awaited "revolt" of the silent majority. Will your taxes be paying for what you find morally abhorrent? What will you do about it?]

PERISCOPE
Holy mess: 11 million Irish Americans leave Catholic Church
By Niall O’Dowd
Published Friday, September 25, 2009, 7:35 AM
Updated Friday, September 25, 2009, 10:13 AM

*** begin quote ***

A new survey shows 34 million Americans, or 15 percent of the population, say they have no religion.

Even more significant is that one-third of those, about 11 million people, are Irish Americans.

*** and ***

We can only surmise the reasons for this, but I have some definite ideas. Think church sex scandals.

*** and ***

Why are so many Irish Catholics leaving the faith? The obvious reason to me is the church sex scandals. They disproportionately affected Irish Catholics and most of the abusers we read about were Irish Catholic priests.

Certainly, based on evidence from Ireland where hundreds of thousands have fled the church and vocations have plummeted after the church scandals there, America with a similar experience is unlikely to be any different.

*** end quote ***

[JR: I apologize for the length of this endnote and the tone. But I really got my shorts into a knot.]

We are in the Age of Secular Progressivism. The New Age. The Culture of Death has taken over.

The Church sex scandals are certainly a factor. BUT not the only one.

The “Government’s” desire to reign supreme was another factor. Personally, I beleive that the “Government”, and it’s lacky “liberal” secular progressive socialist media allowed, the Church to fall. It deliberately turned a blind eye to the sex scandal as it was developing. Allowed it to worsen and fester. Like an untreated wound. In a deliberate attempt to kill the one entity that though out the ages has opposed “the King”. And, given aid and comfort to the serfs while rallying the “revolutionaries”. So the government failed to protect the people and their abused children, deliberately and cynically, to kill a rival for the people’s affection and loyalty. The Church was a rival. It had to die.

The Church leadership’s desire to be close to the wealthy politicians was another factor. Look at all the Catholic In Name Only (CINO) politicians — Ted Kennedy, for one giant example. He went over to the Secular Progressives and abortion in the early Seventies. (See his early writing on the Right To Life.) Yet, the Bishops never called him out on it. I beleive they did it for the “power” and money he represented. Look at John Kennedy, the First Irish Catholic President? What a joke. The morals of an alley cat. But was never called out by the Church. And, on and on. CINO Politician after CINO politician was never called on the carpet. Nancy Pelosi deliberately mis-states the Church on abortion and she gets a private hand slap. The Church leadership embraced what they supposedly opposed. And, that lie, the lip service, the mockery, the pharisaicalness destroyed the loyalty of the people to the Church.

Another factor, the Church “allowed” the government’s “public education”. The Government, like all totalitarian regimes, wanted to indoctrinate the young. Horace Mann brought the Prussian model to the USA to make cannon fodder and factory workers. Note that the elite NEVER send their children to “public schools”. The Church should have fought and died on that particular “hill”. By surrendering education to the Government, they were dead any way. It should have been litigated by all the great Catholic lawyers on Constitutional grounds, on Freedom of Religion grounds.

Hiervoor

Nature Red
September 8, 2009 · 2 Comments

*** begin quote ***

Someone I know observed a bit of nature close up a while ago…one creature of the Peaceable Kingdom capturing and swallowing whole another one, this swallowing was done after a decent period of playful softening up. Dinner needed I suppose a bit of persuasion to become just that, and tenderizing of course. One wonders if that was how the word “cuisine” entered the languages of man.

*** and ***

Good St. Isaiah pray for us!

I once worked with a person like the one above, who shudders; another very gentle person. She was a member of PETA and would not hear of the things we humans do to other creatures that we may keep body and soul together. “I will eat nothing that has a face,” she once told me. “Oysters, then?” I asked one day after having worked my way through most of the animal kingdom to an unwavering resounding “No.” But, even without faces, oysters were out. Or, in… Anyway, oysters, pussycats and such were all equally allowed the right to whatever we have been endowed with. Of this my co-worker was as certain as I am that oysters are definitely worth eating, raw, fried and Rockefellered.

One fine day I asked her whether or not she felt as strongly about saving little humans as she did about saving little kittens. Though it was all of twenty years ago I remember her reply clearly. “I have only enough energy for one cause at a time.” It was as clever a non-answer as any Kennedy or Cuomo ever gave. She once told me that she would have a hard time deciding whether or not to rescue all of her nine pussycats or her one daughter should a deadly fire strike her house. I thought seriously about making her a gift of a home sprinkler system for the poor child.

I am quite frankly puzzled by the way such people think. My former co-worker could not bear to think of steak without choking up, no pun intended. The person who was so horrified at the story about dinner al fresco worked for a number of years in the “reproductive health” industry. I was one of those entities whose chief work is promoting something called “reproductive freedom” through, among other things, advocacy of “reproductive rights” which is most often accomplished through the termination of the “reproductive process”. We need not consider how that sometimes is accomplished, or what it always means.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Interesting. I think this is a Jasper, but I’m not sure. I do find it interesting the train of thought. PETA-wise. “Suffer the little children to come unto me.” Saddening.]

I’ve just had a meeting with Sue and Sam (from URO) about use cases. It was useful, as always, to put our heads together and we came up with a quick sketch of a potential infrastructure for Bibliosight that we would like feedback on:

A quick sketch

N.B. This assumes it is possible to programmatically bulk upload XML records to EndNote – I have no idea if this is possible – and to intraLibrary which should be possible based on discussion at the meeting on Tuesday.

The sketch arose from the fact that research administrators currently use EndNote which they wish to continue using as dedicated citation management software for its high level functionality and the need to simplify their workflow rather than expect them to add records to two separate systems. Such an approach could also inform our developing use cases to a) auto-populate the repository with metadata from WoS and b) alert repository/research administrators when an article is published so we can pursue an appropriate full text version for the repository.
