G 드래곤 with 예찬
우렁찬 목소리를 가진 예찬이는 2.5kg으로 작게 태어난 아기다. 목소리와 달리 감기에 잘 걸려 항상 걱정. G드래곤은 예찬이와 헤어짐이 너무도 아쉬웠다고 했다. 예찬이가 더 이상은 아프지 않게, 늘 건강하고 씩씩하게 자랄 수 있도록 응원을 바란다.

촬영 후기_아기를 안는 아이돌의 모습은 초반에 어색했는데, 금방 친해지더라. 김혜자씨처럼 촬영 후 한참 동안 아이와 있었다. 촬영 후 아기의 옷을 조심스럽고 섬세하게 입히는 모습을 보면, 훗날 분명 좋은 아빠가 될 것 같다.

G-Dragon with Ye Chan

Ye Chan who was born weighing 2.5kg, was crying with a loud voice. Unlike his strong voice, it’s always very worrying when he catches a cold. G-Dragon said that he was sad to have to leave him. Show support and cheer to this baby so that he will grow up healthy and strong.

Director’s review: At the beginning it looked awkward seeing and idol with a baby, but soon they looked very comfortable. After the shooting G-Dragon stayed with the child like Kim Hye Ja did. After that he carefully and with delicacy dressed up the baby. Judging by his appearance, it certainly looks like he will be a good father in the future.

Big Bang was on VIVI magazine for this month, with some pictures of the members individually and as a whole. Some questions were also asked to each of the members and a profile of some of the members was provided.

-First, please introduce to us the song <Let Me Hear Your Voice>
YB: The 2 other songs we’ve released in Japan so far have been enjoyable club music but this time it was for a drama so to fit that image, and since it’s Autumn the song is a lyrical ballad.

-The lyrics about thinking of your girlfriend is really sad. But the BigBang-ish tempo gave it quite an optimistic feeling and sound.
YB: You’re right. I think the song feels different depending on who the person listening to it is. We wanted to make a song that’s not just sad, but also hopeful.

-What were you thinking of when you sung it?
V.I: I liked the lyrics, so I kept imagining the woman in the song and sung my heart out.
GD: I was thinking that we haven’t done a ballad in a while, so I want to sound different to our previous songs…

-Are you used to promoting in Japan now?
TOP: We do so many things in the short times that we come to Japan, so I’m always brace myself before we come. (laughs)
YB: Our Japanese fans are like our girlfriends in Japan. We like that we can meet our fans who love Big Bang.

-You can sing and dance, Big Bang has so many abilities and attractions. What do you think fans are most attracted to?
TOP: The fact that we enjoy ourselves so much on stage, we’ve always thought it’s important have fun with our fans while we sing and dance.

-What kind of year was 2009 for you?
YB: A year when I could seriously think about and concentrate on my music and myself. Just recently, I feel like my vision’s cleared.
GD: A busy year with our major Japanese debut, our solo debuts and concerts. A year when so many things were so sensitive.
DS: An eventful year. I was in a big accident, and lots of events occurred like our major debut in Japan, so I’m now able to be thankful for all the little things too. I think I’ve become more optimistic.

-What kind of year would you like 2010 to be?
GD: 10 is a perfect number, so I hope next year becomes a ‘perfect year’.
V.I: I want to become a valuable dongseng that Big Bang needs. (V.I is the youngest of the members)
TOP: What?! You think we don’t need you now?!
YB: V.I is a very cute dongseng at the moment, too.
TOP: I want to find a brand of wine that I’ve never tried before and taste the depth of life…just kidding!
DS: I hope that I don’t forget to smile in 2010, and that I try really hard in everything.

-What’s Big Bang to you?
GD: Another family. We go to each other for advice for lots things, not only work.
YB: The members always understand my problems the most and I can speak honestly when I’m with them.

-After seeing ViVi..
VI: (in Japanese) Where are all these refined women? Introduce me, please!
YB: (in Japanese) Well, we don’t actually have any friends in Japan at the moment so…
TOP: It’s my birthday on the 4th of November, let’s all eat together! I’ll buy kokoichi curry. You can also order chicken, sausages and topping for fritters.
GD: What, only one type of topping? (laughs)

-Who do you guys think is the most classy and stylish of the members?
(Everyone except for TOP points at him) T.O.P!
TOP: Well its hard to pick one person since every member has their own individuality and like different styles…but thanks.

-Enjoyment in Japan
TOP: Shopping. And just what do we buy?
VI: That would be lunchboxes (obentos).
TOP: Clothes and accessories!
YB: When we first came to Japan, we all bought T-shirts and Levis shoes together.
TOP: There are lots of designs not available in Korea and their clothing lines are different. Trends and feelings are also always changing so we go shopping every time we come to Japan.
GD: This time, I plan to make them take us to a LOVELESS store called GUILD PRIME.

-Any new Japanese you’ve learnt recently?
VI: Gorogoro! (the sound of, literally rolling but it means like relaxing and doing nothing) I gorogoro around at home.
DS: KiraKira (twinkle twinkle). Because we were on KiraKira Radio Time yesterday, and I liked the sound of it.
VI: Ramen (noodles), Tsukemen (Chinese noodles), Bokuikemen (I’m a handsome boy)!!! (joke)
And also, Are you healthy~ (imitating Antonio Inoki)

-The person you think won’t change even after 10 years?
YB: Wouldn’t it be VI?
TOP: VI hasn’t changed since I first met him. I wish he would though. (laughs)
GD: I haven’t changed.
YB: It’s my pace. (??)

-The person who is the most show-offy in front of fans?
(everyone looks at VI)
VI: ..It might be me? (laughs) I feel hyper when I’m in front of my fans.
TOP: He’s so hyper that he forgets to sing his parts in the songs. (laughs)

-Who changes in front of women?
VI: Yes. (raises his hand) I become a man.
TOP: When he’s with guys, he doesn’t talk that much but when he’s with girls, he’s very well mannered and talks really well.
VI: (suddenly in Japanese) Go out with me! This is my pickup phrase.
GD: In Korea, he’s always going Nuna! Nuna!! (laughs)

-Who brings together everyone’s opinions?
Everyone picked G-Dragon.
GD: We’ve never fought before, but I think it’s my job as the leader to decide things whenever something happens.

-Hopes of marriage?
TOP: GD always talks of how he wants to get married
GD: If I meet my ideal woman, I want to get married straight away. And I want to start making a world of just the two of us.

-Your favourite part of your physical appearance?
VI: My snaggletooth!
YB: My side profile.
GD: No, Taeyang’s is the veins in his arms!
YB: Oh that too.. (shows arms) I’m working out so they’re pretty thick.
DS: My pinky finger. In Korea they say that if you paint your pinky nail in summer and it lasts until the first snowfall, you will experience true love. Look, mine’s still here.
TOP: My eyebrows.
GD: They’re very long, and a lot thicker now too.
TOP: I used to have hair all over my upper forehead instead of thick eyebrows, so I would tie it back.
YB: TOP is so serious when he jokes, I’m not sure what parts are true and how far the joke goes up to.
TOP: Really? (laughs) But (although I joke) I don’t lie.

-The first Japanese phrase you learnt?
TOP: How much is this?
VI: Where’s the toilet?

 -Artists you like in Japan?
YB: I don’t know many, but people I’ve come to like from TV or Radios are AI chan and Chrystal Kay.

-TOP’s Profile:
Se7en, a company sunbae chose him the name T.O.P. It has lots of different meanings, including the TOP of the top. Is a rapper.

Greetings to Tucson Audiologists’ Patients and Colleagues!  Today we’re picking up our on-going discussion with Alan Desmond, AuD, about balance problems.  Dr Desmond is a nation-wide expert on balance problems.  This is the fourth article in the dizziness series.  Here are some hilights of what  we’ve learned so far in this amazing series:  

• 75% of dizzy patients mention symptoms to their health care provider, yet only 33% of geriatricians pursue that complaint, compared to audiologists, who check it out 84% of the time.  Getting specific is essential, because it points to tests that allow diagnosis and treatment. 
• Half of all inner ear disorders are due to just one condition, yet fewer than 10% of people with that condition are offered a treatment that is documented to effective 90% of the time! 
• Antivert may help nausea.  It doesn’t help imbalance, unsteadiness or lightheadedness. It doesn’t speed recovery from inner ear disorders and can actually slow down the natural recovery process.

 Dear Dr Desmond,

We’re getting puzzling phone calls and second hand reports.  They go like this:  Dizzy patients are getting MRIs and full brain work ups but they are not getting hearing and vestibular evaluations.  According to the anecdotal reports, these patients aren’t recovering much and some still don’t have a diagnosis.
In the “old days,” patients were referred to an ENT and audiologists right away and most of those patients received help and recovery.  Are our memories getting fuzzy or have things changed in the delivery of balance health care? What, in your opinion, is the best protocol for assessing and treating these patients to optimize their recovery? What is the likelihood of success for patients of this type?

Here’s Dr Desmond’s Response Today:

Dear Holly and Sharon,

In a previous blog, I posed your question in terms of tests procedures:  Why do people with dizziness get full neurologic workups, usually including CT or MRI scans of the brain?

 I said the answer lay in the economics of the situation. Specifically, it has to do the cost of liability risk associated with assessing dizzy patients.  From that perspective, let’s analyze the neurological workup first, for a common dizzy complaint.  In my opinion, ordering a cranial MRI for the complaint of positional vertigo is extreme and contrary to published clinical guidelines (Bhattacharyya et al, 2008).  MRI and CT scanning workups act as insurance that patients’ symptoms do not stem from a stroke, brain tumor, multiple sclerosis or other life threatening conditions.  Yet, such neurological conditions are very uncommon in dizzy patients — they account for only 1% of the dizziness problems.  With such a low incidence rate of neurological problems, it is not too surprising that these neurological tests are not efficient in evaluating dizzy conditions.  In a recent study (Korres et al, 2009) MRI found the cause of dizziness in just 3% of patients.   

 In contrast, electronystagmography (ENG) is a traditional test of vestibular function that consistently finds the cause of dizziness in 50% of patients (Korres et al, 2009).  Vestibular specialists using ENG and more advanced equipment, such as a Rotational Chair, find the cause of dizziness in about 80% of patients (Arriaga et al., 2005). 

It seems clear that economic liability is the motivating factor for ordering MRIs and CT scans for dizzy patients, since so few of them are helped by those procedures.  But what about the financial cost to patients?  In 2004, when I wrote the first edition of Vestibular Function (Desmond, 2004), the patient’s charge for an ENG test was about $350 and about $1200 for a cranial MRI.  Since then, the charges have changed rapidly and varied wildly depending on payor, but I think it is fair to say that a cranial MRI is about double the cost of a full vestibular evaluation, and about 4 times as much as a standard ENG test at present.

The dizzy patients and their medical providers face the paradox that expensive work-ups must be ordered (and paid for)  to rule out conditions that 99% of the patients do not have, while tests that cost ¼ to ½ as much are not ordered even though they are known to identify 80% of the problems these patient do have!

 Once again, the situation boils down to economics.  Stay tuned for the last entry in this blog series next week, when I’ll tie it all together and make some projections as to how this paradoxical situation may play out in the future of health care delivery.  Thanks for letting me explore this topic in detail.

Big Bang was in yet another Japanese magazine, this time it was Women’s Weekly Magazine. They also had an interview with the boys, in which they asked them about their 3rd single “Let Me Hear Your Voice“. I’ll post the translations to the interview soon.

Q : “Let Me Hear Your Voice” is the opening theme song in the drama 「One Person」, but what do you think of  ‘A single girl who only spends time with herself’ ?

GD : It’s nice because I’m independent too right now and self-sufficient. However, it seems like I would become excessively used to myself, so I think I would need to turn away for a while . 
D-LITE : Wouldn’t there be times when you long for a person? At that time, can a person jump into my heart? (laughs)
SOL : Although I’m independent right now, a girl that pampers me or supports me is good.　
V.I : Me too! Men of all countries share a common heart.

Q : Is everyone here the type to do everything by themselves?

D-LITE : I can do it. I’ll go wherever I need to go by myself, and I’m the type that can have a good time.
GD : I can probably go shopping. But, eating out by myself is too much.
SOL : A movie by myself is a little… when it comes to me it’s fine.
TOP : Because everyone gets lonely easily.

When people in their 30s hear the news that their first love is getting married, the first song that comes to mind is Yoon Jong-shin’s “Your Wedding.” But to teenagers, it appears to be “Wedding Dress” by Tae-yang of Big Bang (real name Dong Young-bae, 21).

Tae-yang released his first solo mini-album last year, with his song “Look Only At Me” becoming a big hit. Recently, he has released his first solo album “Wedding Dress”. He is the third among the Big Bang members–after Seung-ri and G-Dragon–to go solo.

Tae-yang looked somewhat haggard when we met with him on November 17. Wearing his hat tilted, he looked handsome, with his smile being especially charming. His Mohican hairstyle, with his head shaved on the sides, created a perfect harmony with the simple earrings in his ears. He is known as the quietest and most pensive member of Big Bang, and that is exactly how he appeared to be that day.

Tae-yang said, “I haven’t been able to sleep well for days. I can’t sleep when I think of what I’m going to do the next day. When I had just debuted, I couldn’t sleep at all. I even seriously considered getting help from a sleep clinic.”

Tae-yang said that this year he looked back on himself and gained full control of his mind. He said, “I had many worries this year. We were so busy performing in Korea and Japan that sometimes I had no idea what I was doing. When several of our members were active solo and I was left alone in the house, I asked myself, ‘Why do I sing?’ It was hard for me, but the answer is: I sing for myself.”

Tae-yang says his newfound mental discipline helped him better concentrate on recording his single album. He was fully involved in the songwriting process for the first time and wrote two songs in collaboration with producer Teddy. The title track “Wedding Dress” and the song “Where U At” from his album are based in the R&B genre. The sentimental melody and funky beat harmonize perfectly with his modest yet impressive dance moves.

“Wedding Dress” is about a man who sends the woman he loves to another man. When Tae-yang had just debuted, he said that he had never had a girlfriend. So what was it like for him to sing about love? He said, smiling, “It’s embarrassing for me to say that I have no experience in relationships. I have never had a girlfriend but-–as this song about one-sided love suggests-–I have been in love, which was never realized. That’s why it was easy for me to understand the mood of the song. It would just be an excuse to say that I don’t have time to date girls. I’m simply not ready yet to accept anyone into my heart. But I’m still dreaming of love.”

On the question whether Seung-ri and G-Dragon inspired him to go solo, Tae-yang said, “Rather than pursuing success, I wanted to sing songs that I really liked. I wanted to sing sentimental songs. Both ‘Look Only At Me’ and ‘Wedding Dress’ are warm songs that are pleasant to hear when it’s cold outside. Because Big Bang’s songs are very upbeat, I wanted to sing poignant and serious songs as a solo artist.”

Tae-yang said it was heartbreaking for him to see G-Dragon, his friend of nearly 10 years, have a hard time because of the plagiarism scandal over his songs, which took him great effort and hard work to write. But he admitted that K-pop is dominated by idol groups these days, saying, “There are many idol bands these days and their music is easy to hear. Despite the wide diversity of music genres, people just can’t afford to pick the music they like. That’s why our role is very important. We must present music that can make a difference.”

With regard to Big Bang’s unrivaled status in K-pop, Tae-yang said he first learned that Big Bang’s name was a hot issue when he was participating in the recording of the song “Halleluiah,” the theme song of the TV drama “Iris.” But he says he still feels awkward to be a part of an issue-making group. Tae-yang appeared tired of cameras always following the Big Bang members. He also added, smiling, that his fellow group members are his only friends, even almost four years since his debut, because he does not bond easily with people.

The average lifespan of idol bands is less than five years. We asked Tae-yang whether he had ever thought about his future and the future of Big Bang. Tae-yang found our question difficult. He said, “If we continue to love music, like we do now, each of us can perform solo while also releasing albums as a group. If I become an influential person someday, I would like to join good causes to help the underprivileged. Just as I liked Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men and Beyonce without a reason, I also want to be a singer who people like without a reason.”
