When a new virus hits the Internet there is little that an anti-virus software can do to stop the malware on the very day. But now, British engineers have come up with an answer to the problem.

Engineers Simon Wiseman and Richard Oak from defence technology company Qinetiq, Worcestershire, have found a way to stop computer viruses in their tracks by intercepting every file that could possibly hide a virus and adding a string of computer code to it that will disable any virus it contains.

Their technique mainly targets emailed attachments and adds the extra code to them as they pass through a mail server.

A key feature of the scheme, which they are patenting, is that no knowledge of the virus itself is needed, so it can deal with new, unrecognised “zero day” viruses as well as older ones, journal New Scientist reported.

Many mailservers already block attachments that will run as executable programs – such as PC files with a .exe suffix – in case they are viruses.

But virus writers have tricks up their sleeve to get round this. For example, they can disguise files as an innocent Microsoft Word (.doc) or Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file to fool unsuspecting users into converting them into an “executable” program file that will run on their computer.

Qinetiq aims to prevent this by inserting a line of machine code – the raw code that microprocessor chips understand – into the header area of incoming files.

The Engineering and Technology Board warned us of the acute shortages of engineers in the report , Engineering UK released yesterday. The report said that the UK must find almost 600,000 new engineers over the next seven years and remove the male-dominated image of the sector to attract new recruits.

The UK needs an extra 587,000 engineers between now and 2017, all with advanced skills, so that the country can compete with other developed economies. Graduates looking to enter engineering roles may be encouraged by the comments, along with contractors who already have the necessary skills and experience.

The review stated: “The UK has great potential to rebalance its economy by drawing on its strong manufacturing base.

“However, shortages of new engineers and of the further education lecturers to train them could seriously jeopardise this, impacting on successful British industries including manufacturing, aerospace and construction.”

One highly qualified engineer with over 30 years experience, however, questions whether the UK needs engineers as he has been unable to secure an engineering job after applying for over 500 posts. He questions whether that demand does exist.

Paul Jackson, the board’s chief executive, told the Guardian: “Manufacturing is incredibly important to the UK, and engineering important to manufacturing. The question is whether we are doing enough soon enough.”He also added that the future of the industry looked promising, with the average engineering salary increasing 2.2 per cent this year as perceptions of a career in the sector show signs of improvement.

Stared at the headline, “Registration may soon be mandatory for Engineers.” for 10 seconds (Appx atleast. Hey some things are not meant be taken too literally). (Click here Or refer to Times Of India, Pg 9, Top-Right for the article).

Apparently, according to the Engineers Bill, 2009, “Engineers like Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, Architects and others will soon have to register themselves.” What?! Have they have finally caught up with the smartest bunch of crooks out there??

It seems an official said, “It is not fair to say all Engineers come out with the same capability”. True. But we are all equally competent at pretending to know a lot when we actually know very little. The University question papers had ensured that. He also said, “There are many engineering colleges churning out poor quality engineers.” Well Mr. Official, why do they have a license then? Wasn’t it one of you lot who gave them one?

“The Cabinet claims that creating such a register will help Indian engineers globally and create certified quality standards.” Hang on a second. Did you mention “certified quality standards”? I hope that doesn’t include a certification exam? Because that would be just one more along with the SCJP/SCJD/SCWCD, CCNA/CCMP/MCSA/MCSE/MCDBA/MCITP. And not to mention GRE, GATE and CAT. And of course, project work at the office.

Kapil Sibal, as always a good minister, had said, “If engineers are involved in public work why should they not be liable in case of any mishap?” As a proud engineer myself (most are, too bad some aren’t!) I whole-heartedly agree to that statement. Parroting my friend’s words, what this Bill will do is bring accountability, ethics and professionalism. Therefore, I second the Bill.

To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Locomotive engineers at Canadian National walked off the job early Saturday after last-minute negotiations collapsed just before a midnight Friday strike deadline.

The two sides had begun talks at noon in Montreal at the invitation of federal mediators.

Teamsters union spokesman Stéphane Lacroix had said there was a possibility the strike could be postponed if the railway agreed to negotiate and not impose a 1.5 per cent wage increase and revised distance caps.

The strike by the 1,700 engineers could affect service, but analysts believe the railway can continue to operate since many of its supervisors and managers are qualified engineers.

Via Rail said earlier that its passenger service would be unaffected by a strike.

In the Montreal region, the Metropolitan Transport Agency said a strike would force the cancellation of service on its Montreal/Deux-Montagnes and Montreal/Mont-Saint-Hilaire train lines.

In a statement, the agency said it was seeking a court injunction to block a strike, calling it “unacceptable” that service for 38,000 commuters a day could be “held hostage” by a labour conflict.

In the event of a walkout, the agency said it would try to arrange for shuttle service for commuters, starting Monday.

The most recent strike at CN ended after more than two months in 2007 when Parliament enacted back-to-work legislation affecting 2,800 conductors represented by the United Transportation Union.

When you were a child, did you ever wonder if the people inside your television set actually lived i

When you were a child, did you ever wonder if the people inside your television set actually lived inside that box and only came alive when you turned it on? Well, here in the fifth dimension, they really do live in there, but they can leave whenever they want, this results in very exciting television because it forces the actors to improvise. I don’t know how you all can just watch something scripted at some warehouse in Hollywood. Don’t you think it’s an insult to everyone’s intelligence that you force them to watch something that was written by some underpaid, overworked writer (who, by the way, never gets the credit they actually deserve) and doesn’t allow the actors to just come up with something completely by themselves? Sure, the plot sometimes makes no sense and the story is sometimes told backwards, but here in the fifth dimension, we trust that the viewer has enough brains to figure it all out. Half the fun is discussing what you think happened over a cup of coffee and then discovering that the person next to you thought that something completely different happened on TV last night.

I tried writing a novel in third-dimension style and it completely bombed. I’m stuck with about 100.000 copies of a book with a beginning that actually starts in the beginning. Everyone complained that they felt duped, as if they all read the same book, and what’s the point of writing a book if each and every copy is exactly the same? What about the bond between the reader and the writer? You just don’t get that same type of communication when you treat everyone the same way, when you make sentences that have structure in them. You see, we don’t call writers “writers” here, we call them “Engineers of Imagination: Category II” because only an Engineer of the Imagination could possibly spend hours on end fishing out words from a language and twisting them into something, only an Engineer of the Imagination could possibly write a song, paint a picture or something creative of that sort. Here in the fifth dimension we actually get respect, people thank us for what a difference we make in society. The Engineers of the Imagination here in the fifth dimension have changed the course of history, some have even started wars, but every one of us gets respect we deserve. This is why we hate the third dimension, people actually expect us to work for free, they think words are just a language but they don’t take the time to play with them, oh yeah, and they think that Engineers of Imagination are all “bums” who have nothing better to do. Fuck you, seriously.

[No prizes for guessing what this post will be about] Recently, a friend of mine scored a nice high

[No prizes for guessing what this post will be about]

Recently, a friend of mine scored a nice high flying job after completing grad school. He went through quite a few interviews and may I say disappointments before he finally got the job he did. This got me thinking about the time I had to go through the same series of interviews and face rejection quite a few times after grad school. The process of facing interviews and getting rejected is bad enough in itself, but then flunking out of HR interviews after doing well in a bunch of grueling tech interviews is just worse. Now some of you may still think that HR interviews are generally just a formality and the tech interviews are the biggest filtering mechanisms companies use, but let me tell you from personal experience, it is not the case.

Two fairly obvious scenarios why engineers get chucked out after HR interviews. One, they’re told they can’t communicate effectively- which translates to ‘they didn’t go to fancy English schools’. And its a bullshit reason to not hire an engineer because, well we are not expected to write sonnets, we are expected to work with software or some other form of technology. Second reason why people don’t clear HR interviews is because they are perceived to be over confident, or arrogant or some such. Which is again flawed. There’s a thin line between being confident and being arrogant, but after 2 years of B school, you’d expect the HR folks, of all people to understand the difference.

Some of you might recall that I don’t quite have the highest regard for the HR community at large. Compared them to earthworms once. So I may be fairly biased in my assessment. But I have sobered down my angst for HR folks – mainly because almost all HR people happen to be really pretty. Its hard to be pissed at someone’s profession when all of them look so super, actually take trouble to dress up, and smell of vanilla ice cream. Whats with that anyway ? A big majority of HR people I’ve come across are women, and they are invariably good looking ones. Now this brings a whole set of advantages, and complications.

Firstly, and most obviously, they bring some much needed color into our otherwise drab cubicle dwelling lives. Which is awesome. But then this also creates problems. Imagine there’s an engineer – male, and single, (and hornier than a rabbit in heat) who’s just cleared all his tech interviews, and is put in a room with a HR girl. Now while she is being all professional and asks serious questions, the guy is thinking is ‘Mmmm girl – pretty. Girl – nice hair’.

[Aside - I'm pretty sure no one working in HR follows this blog, hence taking my liberties.. And I use the terms 'guy' and 'engineer' only because I'm an engineer and a guy. Feel free to fill in your roles]

I wonder about the questions HR people ask in interviews. You know, the “Where do you see yourself in 5 years” questions. Do they know they are asking the most repeated lame-ass questions actually expecting an even lamer cliched answer, or are they just testing out a guy to see if he is all bullshit talk and no honesty ? We would like to think its the latter, but sometimes, it all just seems like a round-about cat and mouse game that just goes wrong more often than not. Its disturbing how often these same questions are asked. I mean come on people, think up some new shit. We are seriously bored of the same drivel. Sometimes I wonder what these HR people are asked in their interviews. They (presumably) know the right answers to all the same questions, so how do you tell the difference ? Is there a HR interview for a HR job ??

In all seriousness, how could anyone expect a guy just out of college, and faced with the question “Why do you want to work with us” reply with anything other than “Because I need a job”? Another one is “What do you know about our company”. Now this might seem like a valid question, but anyone can look up a Wikipedia page, or the company website. Even if a guy can memorize a bunch of data and spit it out, does that make him a good prospect for a job ? In reality, there is nothing that a HR can ask a fresher that would lead to a correct conclusion about his personality. But the HR interviews are done because it says so in their policy.

This doesn’t change much for someone who has work experience and is looking to change jobs. Its usually down to one of money, location, boredom, or an asshole manager. After this, everything a guy says in the interview is gibberish. There is still very little one can learn about a company from the Internet, or from friends, or from any other source even after working for 2-3 years. And at this stage too, the same questions are asked, only difference is people reply in more sophisticated, corporate BS-ish way. The worst part is that most HR interviews happen over the phone. I mean its hard enough to judge someone face to face after 15 minutes, how do you expect to judge a person on the phone at 9 pm on a Friday night?

I have a theory – In a HR interview, your best strategy would be to give the answer the HR is looking for. It may be close to the truth, or be light years away from reality. But in case you think honesty is the best way to go, then well, you’re screwed. Think about it.. the HR would only be looking for something, anything that makes a candidate unfit for a job, so they are hoping that you would talk himself into a hole, or say something they never expected, and then they can reject you, and move on. So, being politically correct (in other words bullshitting) would actually work in your favor. There is no right answer to a “Where do you see yourself in 5 years”. So, be prepared for these types of questions, make up some shit and jabber away. More often than not, you’d get the job. Every HR expects honesty, but giving an honest answer will not be beneficial to the candidate. Such it goes..

Have you ever noticed a HR person having a real conversation with an engineer about something other than work ? Hardly ever. They go to lunch with fellow HR folks, and have very few friends who are techies/engineers. So how can they get any perspective on what makes us tick? And yet they have the final call in hiring and firing. Weren’t they taught in B-school about understanding your market, knowing your customer or some such?

But yes, they are very pretty, and smell nice even at 5 pm, and it s still awesome.. And when one of them gives us even a hint of a smile, beats the crap out of fixing segfaults any day..

Any proposal involving dredging of the sea bottom, should be approached with abundant caution.

They are finding it very expensive to maintain the Panama canal, because of the continuous silting by the streams, from the sides of the canal.

The Palk Strait connects two powerful oceans of the world, the Indian ocean of the south and the Pacific ocean of the east, the latter one notorious for tsunami. Can we forget the last one?

Engineers have the habit of miscalculating the disadvantageous parameters. They now admit that the silting of Tehri dam is more than what they assumed. As if, it is the fault of the river, not their fault!

The sea bed is subjected to sudden changes caused by undercurrents, earthquakes, bulging or withdrawal of the sea bottom etc. which are yet to be understood. Somewhere the sea bottom goes down, at other places islands come up, indicating upward movement of the bottom level.

The displacement of some islands in the Andaman archipelago was noticed after the last tsunami.

Politicians should keep away from decision making.

CN, much like the BC Ambulance Service, is imposing a contract on their engineers, saying that talks with the union have reached an impasse:

CN to impose contract changes after talks hit impasse

Canadian National Railway Co. intends to impose contractual changes this weekend on 1,700 of its engineers after talks with the union representing them hit an impasse.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, which represents the engineers, has fired back after the talks broke off last Friday, and said it is considering filing a complaint with the federal government that the railway has bargained in “bad faith.”

The engineers have been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2008.

The question also remains whether the union will accept the work rule changes being imposed on them, or whether it will lead to a strike at the railway.

CN has been renegotiating its labour pact with the Teamsters’ engineers for the past 14 months, and a federal mediator has been assisting the parties since August. But the talks have hit an impasse on rules governing the maximum amount of miles the engineers are able to work a month and wages.

The railway had been seeking to raise the engineer’s 3,800-mile monthly cap to bring it in line with its conductors, whose cap is 4,300 miles a month.

The discrepancy between the two stems back to the fact that the conductors only joined the TCRC after leaving the United Transportation Union in September 2008. As a result, CN’s engineers, who make on average $90,000 a year, work on average 15 to 17 days a month compared with the 16 to 18 days conductors do, the railway says.

Both CN and the TCRC have said they have brought numerous proposals to the table, but have failed to reach an agreement on the work rule changes and wages. CN has said it has also offered to take the matter to binding arbitration, which was rejected by the union.

“After 14 months of trying to bargain new agreements with the union, we concluded further talks would not result in a settlement,” said Mark Hallman, CN spokesman. “If the TCRC has a suggestion to resolve our difference, we’d be happy to meet them as soon as tomorrow (Wednesday).”

But, as it stands, CN intends to implement a 1.5 per cent wage increase for its engineers and to bring their mileage caps in line with the conductors as of Nov. 28. “We made a range of offers and they were rejected, and we think it’s time to move forward,” Hallman said.

The union has already said it is “disappointed” by CN walking away from the negotiation table last week, and that it was considering filing a complaint that the railway had negotiated in “bad faith” after a number of proposed dates to continue the negotiations were rejected last Friday.

“We are very disappointed that CN has declined to continue negotiations as it appears they want to force federal government intervention without having to negotiate,” said Daniel Shewchuk, TCRC president, in a statement last week. “We have offered CN further dates for which to continue negotiations but, to our surprise, CN has declined and we have not seen any change in their position over the weekend.”

Under the Canada labour code, both sides are entitled to strike or be locked out with 72 hours’ notice.

Shewchuk was not available for comment Tuesday, and a spokesperson for the federal minister of labour was unable to say whether a complaint had been filed with the ministry by the Teamsters on Tuesday.

BUILDERS? TO A GREAT EXTENT, THE ANSWER IS YES.

IN A BID TO MAKE FAST BUCKS, THEY VIOLATED ALL THE LAWS. IT IS NOT ONLY THE BUILDING BY LAWS, ZONAL REGULATIONS, KMC ACT AND KTCP ACT, BUT, VIOLATED, INDIAN CONTRACTS ACT TOO. THE AGREEMENT TO SELL, JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT, WORKS CONTRACT, CONSTRUCTION AGREEMENT AND SALE DEED HAVE FAULTY CLAUSES AND WHICH CANNOT BE ENFORCED. THE AGREEMENT TO SELL, SUBMITTED TO OBTAIN LOANS FROM THE BANKS, HAVE A DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF CONSIDERATION AND THE CONSIDERATION IN THE REGISTERED SALE DEED VARIES, ATTRACTING PENAL ACTION FROM INCOME TAX AUTHORITIES AND THE BANKS.

WHAT ABOUT THE BANKS? YES.

THEY ARE ALSO EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE. HAD THE PROPERTY DOCUMENTS BEEN PROPERLY SCRUTINISED AND THE CONSTRUCTION IS EXAMINED IN THE LIGHT OF THE SANCTIONED BUILDING PLANS, BY LAWS AND ZONAL REGULATIONS, THE BUYERS WOULD HAVE BEEN SAVED FROM THIS AGONY OF PAYING HUGE PENALTIES UNDER AKRAMA-SAKRAMA.

THE BANKS MUST ALSO BE TAKEN TO TASK .

WHY LEAVE THE GREATEST OF ALL?

THE SUB-REGISTRARS. YES.

HAD THEY VERIFIED THE DOCUMENTS BEFORE THE EXECUTION OF THE DOCUMENT, THE BUYERS WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ALERT AND CAREFUL. HAD THEY REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE DOCUMENT FOR REGISTRATION AND CITING THE NON-COMPLIANCE OF BUILDING PLANS AND BY LAWS, THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR AKRAMA AT ALL.

FINALLY, THE GREATEST BENEFICIARIES ARE THE JURISDICTIONAL TOWN PLANNING OFFICERS AND SUPERVISING JUNIOR ENGINEERS, ASSISTANT ENGINEERS, ASSISTANT EXECUTIVE ENGINEERS AND THE CHIEF ENGINEER, WHO ARE SUPPOSE TO SUPERVISE AND TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO STOP SUCH VIOLATIONS.

NOW, THE POOR BUYERS ARE MADE SCAPEGOAT AND COMPELLED TO PAY THE HUGE PENALTY, FOR THE FAULTS OF OTHERS.

IS IT WISE?

Apparently just one, who finally reads the directions. The other 4 non-engineer men where just there to snark at him. Of course, as payback for my snark, I had to put the lights on the tree myself.

Which is fine, really. That’s how Christmas should be, after all. Time with friends and family, and time alone. Or at least, that’s what I think.

Speaking of time alone, our church is sponsoring a workshop called “Hope for the Holidays.” I’ll have more on it in the next few days, but if you have someone who is grieving, then this might help. Stay tuned for more information. (I love saying that, like I’m all important or something.)

Desi aunties and Desi girls are keeping a look out for any guys who are an engineers, lawyers, or do

Desi aunties and Desi girls are keeping a look out for any guys who are an engineers, lawyers, or doctors. But the one guy who has the “highest market value” are guys who are doctors or in the process of being one. It’s amazing what a certain position in society can get you. Desi aunties just want a prestigious son-in-law to be in their families. The reason is how our society is shaped, unlike American society which deals with money. Desi societies do deal with money but the name and occupation weighs more. In the Desi society, how many can say I have a doctor in my family? Not many I suppose. The process of becoming a physician is very rigorous and hard. Medical students have to struggle through their classes studying constantly by jugging in endless amounts of caffeine and studying through sleepless nights. One of the medical instructors told his students “you’re all MDs, you have to struggle”.

For those who are not Desis, I’ll explain the meaning for these words. “Desi” means anyone who is from South Asia. Also, whenever someone refers to a woman who is old enough to be their mom, they are considered to be aunties; the same goes for men and uncles.

Being a doctor or having a doctor in the family seems overrated to me. I didn’t know brown people cannot be anything else other than doctors; not just doctors but also lawyers and engineers. It’s apparently a shock to Desi uncles and aunties that there are more occupations in the job market and more degrees in college other than pre-medicine and a doctor degree. Heck, if a Desi guy wants to do something daring like a music, I’m sure his parents would have a heart attack.

Marriage plays an important role in Desi society. Around a Desi youth’s 20s, marriage comes up. It’s more important for Desi girls than Desi guys. Around the early 20s, a Desi girl’s future husband gets sought out. Initially the candidates are selected by the occupations they have. The occupations they look for are…as you guessed it, doctors, lawyers, or engineers. If there are no guys who are in those three occupations then the next categories are guys who are in the occupations of accountants or business owners.
One of the things that pisses me off is that when it comes to a doctor, he is not looked upon for himself as a person, but for his status and his money. I know money plays an important role but girls, and especially their moms, look at the materialistic aspect than the person they have interest in.

Here is a true story that I heard from a friend. This guy, Russell, gotten accepted to medical school, he was scheduled to move to another state in a couple of months to attend that school. He went to a Desi function (cultural program) and saw a very beautiful girl, Zara, and he became interested in her. He asked his friend Sabrina, who knew Zara, to look into the matter. Sabrina showed Zara Russell’s picture and Zara found him attractive but her interest was passive because many guys are after her. Zara asked Sabrina more about him. Sabrina described the good characteristics of Russell and his personality; and then Sabrina mentioned that he’s going to medical school. Zara became more interested after hearing that and told Sabrina, well at least my mom will be happy if I hook up with him.

I don’t understand why some Desi girls want the easy way of trying to live a good life. They don’t want to get a decent education. Every other Desi girl I’ve encountered told me, “I’m lazy, I’ll just marry a doctor”.
In my opinion if girls can judge a guy by his money and occupation, then the guys, especially doctors, have the right to select a girl based on her beauty and figure.
