I mentioned, in a discussion on editing, that editors don’t want to be seen as a bunch of arbi

I mentioned, in a discussion on editing, that editors don’t want to be seen as a bunch of arbitrarily rule-bound tut-tutters. One of my colleagues replied (tongue in cheek, she assures me), “at least when we’re NOT at work – after all, the essence of most editing is being a rule-bound tut-tutter!”

To which I replied:

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sorry for the emphasis, but I must respectfully disagree at the top of my lungs. We are, or we certainly should be, pragmatists, and friendly, helpful ones at that. That means that we understand that rules are made for the sake of communication, not the other way around, and everything we do is to help the author communicate well with the audience. We don’t enforce a rule if there’s no good reason for it – and we have to be able to explain the reason – and we should be helpful, encouraging, and empathetic, not prissy tut-tutters.

English is too good, fun, and useful to be some kind of gotcha game. One of our primary jobs as editors is to pry it loose from the morbid grips of those who would make it simply an arbitrary and devious status game (you know, those who say “Aaargh! I hate idiots who start a sentence with ‘hopefully’!” or who insist coolly “Split infinitives are a sign of poor breeding”). We are not bound by rules; we understand them and understand why each rule exists and we apply them intelligently, not dogmatically. And we ought not to tut-tut! Such is for those who are still in the middle school of the mind, pretending to be adults but maintaining their status by trying to bring others down.

English language may seem to be easy to write and speak to those who know it well but at times when the particular documents are targeted towards a foreign or international audience, you have to take the help of editing services. Online English offers editing service and science editing to professionals for all types of documents. Online editing is done by professionals to make sure that there are no mistakes in the text and that the audience gets the correct information.

If you are an individual, a business or a research organization, it is likely that you need to get the manuscript checked and edited. For all types of document editing, there is not other place than online English. All areas are covered under the document editing services of the company. You can get your documents edited to make sure that they make use of highest quality English language.

Using the proofreading and science editing services of online English is easy. There are a few steps that you have to follow. Make sure that your document is ready for editing and is complete in every sense. You can log on to the web server of the website and enter the details that they ask for. After you fill the details, you will be able to upload your document. After you have submitted the document, you will get a conformation mail from the company to let you know about the quotation. The maximum time taken by the company to send you the mail will be around six hours.

If you have not used the services of online English in the past, you will get an email from the company to let you know the quotation. You can accept the quotation or reject it if you do not like it. This needs to be rule out before online English begins the editing of your document. You will have to send the payment online and will then get a receipt from the company. Clients who have been using the services of the website for a long time can send the documents and wait for the conformation mail. They too can request for the quotation for manuscript editing.

With the help of English grammar checker, the English language and English grammar of your documents will be checked. To make sure that you are satisfied with the editing service of the company, you will get a conformation mail.
I love the English language. I adore how flexible it is, what a staggeringly large vocabulary we hav

I love the English language. I adore how flexible it is, what a staggeringly large vocabulary we have and how relatively easy it is to get right.

There are three things I detest about it though, and all of them are to do with language users rather than the tongue itself.

1. They’re, there and their. It isn’t hard – honestly it’s not. They’re refers to an abbreviation of they are, denoted by the apostrophe. There refers to a place, best remembered by noting the word here thinly veiled within its spelling. Their refers to people and is best recalled by the letter I – a personal pronoun – connecting the word with humans.

2. To, too and two. Again – easy. To, is the most commonly used of the three and as such is the quickest to write. Too, meaning also or as well etc. can be remembered by its additional o - there as well as the first o. Two is the version that isn’t one of the others and naturally, refers to the number.

These are the things you should know from when you learn to write – just because some things sounds the same when they’re pronounced, it doesn’t mean that they’re the same words. Bear and Bare sound the same, afterall, but you wouldn’t go confusing a gigantic, hairy creature with a penchant for pic-i-nic baskets with being naked, would you?

My biggest hatred of something in the English language, though, is as follows.

3. Might of. No. Just no.

There is no excuse for writing might of instead of might have, or the more commonly used might’ve. I wish people would just look at what they’re typing into their facebook status bars and think, “Actually, in this context ‘might of’ doesn’t make any sense.” If these morons would just ask themselves, “Whose might am I referring to here? The might of what?” I would be far happier. As it is though, I feel like I’m surrounded by idiots.

Please, for the sake of thousands of years of a beautiful language, use your brain.

If not for English, then for those of us who actually care about it not being butchered by complete morons.

I received this post from friend who didn’t know the author. If you do, please let me know. Would love to give credit! I couldn’t help posting it. It is clever and funny–enjoy!

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as ‘Euro-English’.

In the first year, ’s’ will replace the soft ‘c’. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard ‘c’ will be dropped in favour of ‘k’. This should klear upkonfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome ‘ph’ will be replaced with ‘f’. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horiblmes of the silent ‘e’ in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as Replasing ‘th’ with ‘z’ and ‘w’ with ‘v’. During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary ‘o’ kan be dropd from vords kontaining ‘ou’ and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi TU understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

Day 79: Put clarifying information at the end of the sentence.

Long sentences can be confusing. One way that writers make long sentences confusing is by including clarifying information in the middle of the sentence. The writer begins the sentence, explains something, and then continues to the end. Consider this example.

An educator with an ineffective pedagogy, the basic philosophy that guides the educator’s instructional decision making, will have difficulty keeping students engaged in a lesson.

The problem here is that the description of pedagogy interrupts the idea being expressed. We can use this tip to revise the sentence and put the descriptive information at the end. This gives us the following sentence.

An educator will have difficulty keeping the students engaged if he has an ineffective pedagogy, the basic philosophy that guides the educator’s instructional decision making.

This revised sentence contains the same information as the original but in a different order, a more effective order. Now the subject and verb are together, and the potentially confusing word is still with its description.

(This is tip from Day 79 of 100 Days to Better Writing, A daily handbook for improving your writing.)

Being something of a stickler for correct English I was tickled to read a letter in the Times today

Being something of a stickler for correct English I was tickled to read a letter in the Times today appealing to the paper to persuade Boots chemists that they must do away with their signs which read “Buy two and get the cheapest free”.

The thing which made me laugh aloud was the fact that the writer said “having tried and failed to change this” which I imagine meant that she had harangued some unfortunate Boots assistant about something they know nothing about and care even less about, unsurprisingly with no effect.

but apparently not for good grammar

It reminded me of being in Starbucks recently when I spotted this shocking message:

Spot the error, other than the obvious hypocrisy of Starbucks claim to be concerned about the environment….

Yes indeed – the debate is all about the wording and having taken a picture of the offending napkin on my phone and been thoroughly mocked by my family for my grammatical concerns, I find to my delight that others have done the same and in fact there are quite a few pics online and a whole section of the strictly for nerds site “grammar monster” given to the debate about the slogan.

As most of you will know the problem lies with the word “less” which ought to be “fewer” in this case – look it up if you are one of those who doesn’t know the difference in meaning – shame on you. And yes I know I should get a life.
