Today I had a day off and I decided to visit the ‘Kunsthal’ in Rotterdam. It featured an exhibition called: ‘Edward Hopper and His Time.’ Hopper represents American Modernism but never really belonged to one of the groups of modernism. The exhibition shows eight works of Hopper and I was struck by the tranquility in his paintings. Almost photographic, frozen in time. Alongside the works of Hopper other ‘Modernists’ are shown. The ‘regionalists’ who pictured people in rural areas. The Ashcan school with their urban paintings, cubists and abstractionists. But I liked the works in the ‘Machine Age’ section the most. What you see is what you get. Still impressed and inspired by this exhibition I decided to go up and see the the photographic work of Jacob Holdt and Vanessa Winship. Holdt made hundreds of photos during his travels through the United States from 1970-1975. An unconformistic view on America in the early seventies. From rich to poor and from black to white. A bit tired of all the impressions I considered leaving, but for one reason or the other my feet went left to Vanessa’s Winship wing. And my feet were right!

I was struck by the portraits of girls in East-Turkey. The Kunsthal website states: “Winship chooses to portray the children in the exact same way every single time: frontally and at full-length. Moreover, each frame is made at the same distance. Due to this all the girls become similar each other. Clothing and pose further attribute to a sense of congeniality. All girls wear dark blue school uniforms with small white lace collars and refined embroidery, as is obligatory in all state schools in Turkey.”

If you take a close look at the pictures you see the individuality and the awaking puberty. Each girl is portrayed the same, but all girls are very different. The photos excited me and made me emotional. Maybe because I have two daughters, maybe because of the innocence and purity. I am still impressed. Bought here booklet and watched the photo’s over and over again. Go see this! Until 17 January 2010. Or visit her website: http://www.vanessawinship.com/projects.php

I made this photo of my favorite picture with my iPhone:

Anywho, I just wanted to express my admiration and ask for an autograph, if possible. I’ll be looking forward to seeing you in “New Moon” (and I’ll be wearing my Jacob Black T-shirt, and howling at the screen!), and many, many films to come, where your star will truly shine.

Yours truely,

Letter 2

Dear Ms. Mona,

This is Jessica, form Mr. Lautners’s publicist office, replying to your mail and request for autograph. We were advised by our lawyers, following communication with Arizona Department of Corrections, that it would not be such a good idea to encourage your interest in Mr. Lautner, given that you are currently on probation. I understand that you were originally a resident in the state of Georgia, where the age of consent is below 18 but as the judge has explained to you in your previous trial, this is not the case for the rest ot the U.S.

As Mr.Lautner’s publicist has also previously explained to you, during your encounter with him at the ComicCon, where you were arrested for trying to sneak into Mr. Lauter’s dressing room in a neglige, this kind of behaviour is disturbing to our client. We have several times before that received trading-cards style naked pictures of you, but have not forwarded them to Mr. Lautner. I am sorry to say but neither has the package with pink lace bra and thong.

Please, obstain from further communication with Mr. Lautner or us, and may I remind you that his restraining order against you is still valid.

Thank you very much,

Today I visited the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. I selected five highlights but could have chosen dozens. In this week you can feel the vibe of innovation almost literally in the streets of Eindhoven.

1.

Where? 5 minuten museum, Strijp-S

Who? Daniel Rozin

What? Trash Mirror

500 pieces of variously colored trash collected from the streets of New York and artist’s pockets, motors, control electronics, concealed video camera, computer. Though built 3 years after the Wooden Mirror, Trash mirror was conceived first, However the concept seemed too risky at the time so I decided to build the Wooden Mirror first. This piece suggests that we are reflected in what we discard. The piece celebrates the ability of computation to inflict order on even the messiest of substances – trash.

Watch the movie here: http://www.smoothware.com/danny/newtrashmirrormov.html

By the way, it’s for sale! $ 110,000!

2.

Where? Adaptation, Strijp-S

Who? Jon Stan & Ivo de Kogel

What? Cabinets of the (Material & Virtual) World

The solid cedar double-sided cabinet incorporates sixteen drawers for physical archiving on one face with sixteen corresponding engraved patterns linking to digital data on the other. The ‘coded’ patterns are not solely a decorative element, bu can be decoded to allow the user’s meaningful data (i.e. digital photos, videos, blogs!) to pop up when interfaced through a camera phone or computer. Produced by the Technisch Instituut Heilig Hart Hasselt and the Waag FabLab Amsterdam.

Here my own iPhone picture: http://yfrog.com/10gf3mj

3.

Where? Graduation Galleries, Witte Dame

Who? Stijn van der Vleuten

What? Forgetfulness

What do I own? Where can I find these things? When do I use them, and what is their value? Stijn van der Vleuten made two thick books about his possessions, called 1397 on 13,82 m2. From knives to his CD collection and everything in between. He photographed, described and indexed ALL his belongings! I NOMINATED STIJN FOR THE ‘ED PUBLIEKSPRIJS’

4.

Where? Graduation Galleries, Witte Dame

Who? Daphne Koenen

What? Polaroid will never die

After sixty years Polaroid production was stopped in 2008. A mortal sin, thinks Daphne Koenen. There is much to say for a Polaroid’s plain instant shots in comparison to the Photoshopped perfection of digital photos. Koenen designed a small exhibition as an ode to the instant camera. Six little treasure-chests in the various rainbow colours of the brand contains unique photos made with the last Polaroid film. for the fans there is a box full of gadgets: posters, a flip-book in which you can see how a photo is developed, and a jewellery box containing earrings, a necklace and a brooch made from camera components.

5.

Where? MU, Witte Dame

Who? Group exhibition

What? Paper Zoo

Just see it yourself, it is free.

Engr. Abdul Sami Abro Both vocational education and skills development have been known to increase p

Engr. Abdul Sami Abro
Both vocational education and skills development have been known to increase productivity of individuals, profitability of employers and expansion of national development. A ‘knowledgeable’ workforce, one that is both hoghly skilled in a particular occupation and also exhibits flexibility, is seen as the most important human capital required for the development of a country. Pakistan’s workforce mischaracterized as technological changes now require individuals to learn and relearn skills throughout their working lives by ensuring its relevance and effectiveness.
Empirically, it has been established that countries, such as Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Koria, Malaysia and many more that achieved prudence in the global workplace as well as social and economic gains, invested heavily in HRD in their initial stages of development. Whereas the countries, such as Pakistan that invested less in HRD, progress gradually and have fallen behind in socio-economic progress and succumbed to low quality products, poor technology and large unskilled labour force. In the South Asian region, Pakistan’s position in trained manpower is fairly weak. The economy has, so far, not produced managers, professionals and a knowledgeable workforce needed for achieving a higher productivity and required value addition.
In the Human Development Index (HDI), Pakistan ranks at the 136th position out of 175 countries due to its low per capita income. Low literacy rate and poor health conditions. Development of Pakistan’s enormous human potential requires a shift in national priorities, and a greater share of the country’s financial resources to the education and vocational and technical training. It is also important if Pakistan wants to capture some of the key industries of the 21th century. Pakistan must create conditions and environment necessary for creativity and innovation essential for moving into and being competitive in the knowledge-based industries, with will provide the highest value-addition for the economy. This will require change in the thinking of the policymakers and additional allocations of financial resources.
Training of various skills in Pakistan is imparted through polytechnic, vocational training centers, apprenticeship schemes, various training and vocational institutions under various ministries and departments, commercial training institutions and ‘Ustand-Shagird7’ system in the informal sector. The formal institutions produce a very small proportion of the total increments to the skilled workforce and not necessarily in accordance with the demand and of requisite quality.

Importance of Technical Education in District Tharparkar
District Tharparkar is rich in Minerals and at same time unfortunately its literacy rate is general education is alarming just below 25%, whereas technical and vocational education seems a far cry.
Skill development is essential for the people of Tharparkar, because the following skills need attention to increase the economy of country and decreases the unemployment not only in Tharparkar but also for the whole Pakistan.

Akash Kumar Rathi Chachro Energy is the life and soul of this modernization. Energy is the part and

Akash Kumar Rathi Chachro

Energy is the life and soul of this modernization. Energy is the part and parcel of our daily life. It is not wrong to say that it has a very deep impact on our society and it looks like a desert to just imagine our so called sophisticated and well-organized world without the daughter of science and technology, energy. In a nutshell energy means life.
With the advent of human on this Eden, men have been interfering in balance of nature. That was the time when goddess of knowledge had not bestowed them with the world’s powerful and useful weapon, Knowledge. But as the goddess pleased over them, men became a super creature and got seniority over entire universe. By the dint of knowledge they pierced the chest of earth, won the applause of altitudes of sky and made the fish behind in gigantic oceans. As the wheel of time moved around we uncover many secrets of nature including fossil fuels.
With the discovery of fossil fuels whole the world revolutionized as it was Aladdin Magic World. Men used that energy very lavishly, thinking that it is renewable source of energy. He used it industries, cities, agriculture, transportations and defense, resulting in advancement in every phase of life. We use energy to produce electricity, as fuel in every large industry, in homes, in transportations (vehicles, trains, aero planes, space shuttles etc), in defense. World’s only super power U.S.A uses about 40% to 50% of world’s fossil fuels. Worlds emerging economies India and China are using coal and petrol very lavishly. Transport is the major factor for usage of petrol and diesel. World’s 80% of electricity is produced through coal, petrol and gas and remaining is produced through Nuclear energy, wind energy, solar energy, geo thermal energy and tidal energy.
Men have established monster like industries, factories, and gigantic means of transportations, heavy chemical and biological weapons. All these dangerous things have made our nature on the core of extinct ness. They emit hazardous gases like sulphur-di-oxide, carbon-di-oxide, lead oxide, carbon-mono-oxide, including acids which corrodes our buildings like termites such as sulphuric acid, carbonic acid etc. Above discussed gases are fatal for our life and hundreds of people each day suffers from skin and eye diseases, lungs and skin cancer. When these gases goes up it corrodes ozone layer (a protective layer which protect us from ultra violet rays of Sun), resulting in a hole which has been made at Antarctica. They also work as green house gases as they trap sun’s rays under earth’s atmosphere resulting in global warming. Scientists are agreed that if this global warming would not nip from the bud then we will have to pay for it by extinctions of many creatures and plants, through floods, snowfalls, cyclones and rainfalls. Whole the system of nature and weather will be sixes and sevens. Some where there will be rainfalls and some where there will be lean days. It would also cause melting of glaciers. According to some reports the melting of ice has boosted up to 20% as compared to natural process. It would endanger many species like polar bears, ice fox, seals, fish, and other species which are dependent on oceans and seas. Many hazardous and biological weapons are creating bundles of complications in nature. They are making our nature polluted by emission of various gases and chemicals which can be very fatal for wild life. The uses of pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers, discharge of chemicals wastage and rubbish contribute very richly towards water pollution. These useful compounds when go into water, creates apt situations for growth of algae, which absorbs most of oxygen of water, thus resulting in lack of oxygen in it. That affects the marine life.
Observing all above circumstances we have to think about our coming generations and future of our earth. I am not a great writer or geologist but the way in which situation is dramatically changing, puzzles my mind. I am totally unconscious on the negligence of so called “Ashraf-ul-Muzlooqat” that how can they be so selfish for the dirt of hands. Using lavishly the world’s resources, the day will come when they will be no more, because they are non-renewable resources. I think we need to innovate our energy technologies by utilizing renewable resources like wind, solar and geothermal energies. If we will not conserve our resources then I am watching the rainy days of our planet. Therefore think again that what are you doing and what to do now.
Sun is the main source of energy and daily we get hundreds of thousands of mega joules of energy but it is shame to us that this free cost goes to waste. But I am happy to know that some developed countries are taking interest in such energy sources but I want to emphasize that this free cost energy should be utilized by developing countries because they can not afford hundreds of bags of money and specialists. I agree that this is new and quite expensive technology but only in short terms, if we use it in long terms then it will be cheap because it is everlasting fuel and great thing is that it is free of cost. Pakistan is very lucky to have all kinds of spices of nature like snowfall, rain, cold, hot, mountains, deserts, plains, plateaus, glaciers etc. Thar is of paramount importance in terms of sunny days. All the year sun scorches here and it is a suitable place for installation of solar plants. NGOs can play a vital role for promotion of such energy resources. Government should contribute its aid towards betterment of earth.
Another easy source of energy is wind power. Pakistan, as discussed above, is lucky to have enough wind to run turbines. Wind plants are gaining enough attention by people. European countries have already started to utilize it. About 20% of energy is gained by it in Denmark and are hopeful to enhance it. Wind plants can also be installed on seas and Pakistan has a sea, then why government is not taking any attention!!! Actually winds blowing near sea shores have great magnitude; they can also be used to cope with problem of increasing energy demands. We can also generate tidal energy. In Bahrain, there is a building, Bahrain World Tower, which gets its one fourth of electricity by installing wind turbines on the walls of building. They have done so much and we are living like the pre-historic men who used to live in dens, and lit the wood for fire and lightning. What kind of deficiency we have? According to Quaid-e-Azam, “Nature has given you every thing and foundation of your country has been laid. It’s upon you to utilize these things in an appropriate manner.” So, why don’t we act upon his advice? Sorry for lecture but it was crying need of hour that whole nation should unite to work out their problems, instead of blaming on others.
Third one source of energy is geothermal energy. It is a new technology and is obtained from the lap of earth. It is a steam which is produced naturally due to high pressure and temperature at core of earth. That steam can be utilized to run the turbines. But it is sorry to say that only 1% of world’s electricity is produced by it. It is quite to say that Ireland produces whole of its energy by geothermal energy. This has a tremendous potential to give us ultimate energy source. It is used in California, U.S.A.
If these things are not afforded on large scales then they should be done on small scales, means we should install solar panels and wind turbines in houses and buildings because a Tsunami starts from single wave.
WAYS TO CUT OFF ENVIRONMENAL HAZARDS
As the environment is affected by human activities like deforestation, pollution, global warming and extinction of wild life. Therefore we should take active actions to block them. According to my little brain I have some suggestions to contribute little for betterment of nature, which are given below;
	Use those means of transportations which don’t emit hazardous gases such as bicycle. If you don’t use bicycle then avoid traveling in personal vehicles if you have public transport.
	Use natural fuel like animal dung. Through these organic fuels methane can be produced which can be uses for cooking purposes. It (methane) can be obtained by reaction between bacteria and organic substances in dung.
	Recycle which can be. We can reuse plastic bottles, cups and bags. We can sell papers and cartons, which can be processed to make them paper again. It would save lots of energy, money and time as well.
	Use water in an appropriate manner and in small quantity. Don’t waste water because only 2.8% of total world’s water is drinkable. Analysts predict that the future wars would be on food and water. Therefore please think again.
	Use natural fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers.
	Save energy as possible as can. Use power saver electronic devices.
	Use cloth bag instead of plastic bags for shopping.
The above described energy resources are new to us but nature has brought them up in her lap. If we will not think now then it would be too late. The day will not far when history will repeat itself. Men will travel on animals as done in past centuries, burn wood instead of gas, have to do every work by hands, deprive of easy and convenient source of electricity, in precise way we will go in to caves again, so think again.

Genus: Ziziphus
Species: Z. mauritiana
Binomial name: Ziziphus Mauritiana

Common Name: Ber, Bair, Borari
Availability: almost throughout the country up to an elevation of about 100 m. a very prominent feature of the rural landscape in Sindh, Punjab and NWFP. Has been planted in irrigated plantation on sand dunes or un-commanded areas.

Habitat:
The tree is remarkable in its ability to tolerate water-logging as well as drought and can grow in dry tropical and sub tropical climates with adequate soil moisture, where annual rainfall ranges from 125 to 2,225 mm, but is more widespread in areas with an annual rainfall of 300 to 500 mm. In China India and Pakistan wild trees are found up to an elevation of 5,400 ft (1,650 m). In Pakistan the minimum shade temperature for survival is 7º-13º and the maximum surviving temperature is 50º C). Studies report that this species flourishes in alkaline soils with a pH as high as 9.2. However, deep sandy loam to loamy soils with neutral or slightly alkaline pH are considered optimum for growth In India, the tree grows best on sandy loam, neutral or slightly alkaline.
Season:
Plants are capable of seed production once they reach a height of about 1 metre. Some types ripen as early as October, others from mid-February to mid-March, others in March, or mid-March, to the end of April. There are 2 crops a year, the main in early spring, the second in the fall. In India the trees flower in July to October and fruits are formed soon after. In February-March the fruits are mature and in some places a second crop is produced in the fall. Pickings are done by hand from ladders and about 110 lbs (50 kg) is harvested per day. The fruits remaining on the tree are shaken down. Only fully mature fruits are picked directly from the tree. They are transported in open bags to avoid fermentation. Seedling trees bear 5,000 to 10,000 small fruits per year. Superior grafted trees may yield as many as 30,000 fruits. The best cultivar, with fruits normally averaging 30 to the lb (66 to the kg), yields 175 lbs (77 kg) annually. Special cultural treatment increases both fruit size and yield.

Fodder Potential:
Old leaves fall in March-April, new ones appear almost simultaneously coppices and produces suckers relished by the browser good fodder.
Leaves have a very high nutritive value. Since the tree is gradually disappearing from the rural landscape due to heavy lopping and browsing. It should be reintroduced on the marginal lands.
