Mike, one of my students, told me that talking to women was as difficult as algebra. “Really?

Mike, one of my students, told me that talking to women was as difficult as algebra. “Really?” I asked, having an intense urge to slap the poor lad. But why? He came to me for answers, so I told him, “That's the perspective you have. In fact, it isn't that difficult.”

“Really?” he said, “but every time I talk to them they seem to be bored and want to leave as soon as possible. What am I doing wrong?”

The truth is, There are many ways to talk to women. Many conversation topics, many likes and dislikes. The problem with men is they bored women with facts and interrogation-like questions. Understand this: Women are emotional creatures. Therefore, you have to stop using logic and focus on feelings when you talk to them.

From now on, I want you to practice this:

Spontaneity: When you're talking to women, make sure you don't do what every other guy does. Be different. Stand out. Do something that will make her remember you even when you're not there. The problem with many men is that they come and talk to women with the expectation to have sex with them. Therefore, when they are having a conversation, men can avoid to give away their nervousness to move forward and bed them as soon as possible.

Stop doing that. I am sure she's already seen a guy doing that three times prior to talking to you. Remember, do something different. Stand out!

Focus on feelings, not facts: Avoid this other common mistake; when talking to women, forget about your logical side, and focus on feelings. Why do you think women live romance novels? because they're packed with feelings and emotions. Did you ever wonder why most women aren't into cars and sports? because they don't care about the engine's durability or the baseball final score!

The 75/25 rule: When talking to a girl, try to only talk 25% of the time. I know, many men will disagree with me, saying that 50/50 is better. Think about it: the 75/25 rule allows you to let her vent and tell you a lot more about herself (which is basically what many women complain not to find in a man), whereas the 50/50 sounds pretty much like an interrogation, a back and forth babble of facts and data.

I can actually write a book on this subjects alone (and trust me, I will) but meanwhile, I want you to take this advice and do something about your conversation skills. There're more tips on how to keep a conversation going with women. Sorry, if I tell you, I am going to have to charge you. No kidding. Having the ability to keep a conversation going with women is the Holy Grail of the dating community.

If you're a man who really wants to change, and get better when it comes to talking to women, you are going to have to come forward, just like Mike did when he said that talking to women was as difficult as algebra.

Ciao for now.

So sat two of my final exams today.
Yes I feel like I have fallen out of my body and my soul has been sucked out of me. But I have faith.
I’ve got to have faith.
Without it I would crumble.

Its the glue that keeps my broken pieces together, that and tea.
Remedy to brave another three exams? Tea, a few old notes, and whole load of umph!

Are you a foreigner? What a question to ask … an experience from many people from across the world.

This happens a lot in many cities and countries where people from across the world co-exist. The individuals who have lived in those cities and countries all their lives are not very welcoming with other people, they use tangible-impressions as a basis of judging another person. Few will pretend to be welcoming but their body language, attitude and expressions demonstrate who and how they relate to others.

Given the interconnected civilization and the globalization of the world, people who see another appearance that are different from theirs, they immediately assume the ‘foreign’ knowledge at the back of their mind, or they verbalize it like the author’s experience.

Oftentimes, others judge you not only based on your looks but based on your accent as well, the way you speak the language whether it is slower or faster than the usual speed of other speakers. Actually, there is a group in the social media that loves accents from around the world, it is named ‘Accents are Sexy’. This group of people understand diversity, are open minded and non-discriminatory.

Linguistically, within the midst of professionals who learned effectiveness when communicating, the real essence is the substance and rhythm of what is being communicated. Not how it was said or being said. Assumptions and erroneous yet discriminating comments are demonstration of ignorance. Regardless of location or situation, one must demonstrate respect to others at any time whether that someone is a foreigner or someone you just met as an acquaintance. People who have lived in many melting pot of cultures in different corners of the world are most sensitive in respecting others. This is because they learned that as a virtue and instead of being rude.

Regardless of your profession, when you dealt business with particular individuals or couples, you must demonstrate due respect, earn trust and start an opportunity of lasting relationship by showing professionalism to them. Great and smart business people always consider their clients as a ‘free advertising agent of their services’ because in the near future, they could be a source of next business opportunity. Would you think the individuals whom you insulted with irresponsible language will be inclined to refer their friends and family members as a helpful professional? People are not dumb of giving business to those who insult others.

In this age of time, people should have learned a lot more of the values that relate to fellow human beings such as respect, courtesy, politeness, open-mindedness, welcoming, neighborly, cultural sensitivity through various interactions, interconnectedness and influx of diversity across the world.

Chinese mining companies operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) need to do more to prevent their operations from leading to human rights abuses, Amnesty International warned today in a new report.

Profits and Loss: Mining and human rights in Katanga, examines the impact of the mining industry in south-eastern DRC.

The report documents a number of serious abuses involving local and foreign companies including forced evictions – illegal under international law – and dangerous and exploitative working conditions.

The report pays particular attention to the role of Chinese companies, which are on course to become the most influential and powerful foreign economic actors in the extractive sector in the DRC – a country with some of the world’s most important mineral reserves.

China also imports significant amounts of cobalt and copper from the DRC, much of which continues to be extracted by small-scale miners – also known as artisanal miners – using handheld tools, and often working in terrible conditions.

“Mining operations in the DRC have resulted in decades of abuse against artisanal miners and the neighbouring communities,” said Audrey Gaughran, Director of Global Issues at Amnesty International.

“The DRC authorities have not only failed to prevent mining companies and traders abusing rights, they have themselves violated human rights to facilitate mining operations.”

When questioned by Amnesty International, several of the companies included in the report attempted to absolve themselves of any responsibility by highlighting the authorities’ involvement in the abuse.

“The failure of the DRC authorities to protect human rights does not let the companies off the hook for their own actions and omissions. Disturbingly, some companies pointed to police involvement in an attempt to legitimize their own contribution to human rights violations,” commented Gaughran.

Under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, companies have a responsibility to respect all human rights.

Governments of countries where companies are headquartered, including China, also have a responsibility to ensure that their companies do not abuse human rights when operating in the DRC.

“We urge all companies with mining interests in the DRC to end the excuses and start demonstrating they are serious about respecting the rights of the communities where they operate,” said Gaughran.

In one case highlighted in the report, 300 families were forcibly evicted from their homes in Luisha when a Chinese company, Congo International Mining Corporation (CIMCO), was given the mining rights to the site in the centre of the town.

After a local official gave only two weeks’ notice, families were taken to a new site in trucks that community members say belonged to CIMCO. The community was simply left there, with no housing or other facilities. They face an uncertain future, with no guarantee they can remain at the new site.

One of those affected told Amnesty International: “We have to start again from scratch…Life is much more difficult here than in the old place.”

Mining operations have also restricted communities’ access to water. On 19 April 2012 COMILU, a Chinese-Congolese joint venture, accompanied by police, used bulldozers and diggers to excavate a deep trench about 3 metres wide, blocking off a rural road crossing near Luisha. Local people had used the road for decades to reach their fields and to access water.

With this route closed off they had to spend considerably longer travelling to and from their fields and water source. When people protested about the trench, police fired live ammunition in the air and one man was killed by a stray bullet.

The majority of mining in the DRC continues to be done by artisanal miners in dangerous and exploitative conditions.

Abuses against artisanal miners remain prevalent in Katanga. Scores die or are seriously injured every year. Miners often work with bare hands, without protective clothing and in poorly ventilated underground shafts where temperatures can be extremely high.

They receive very little for the minerals they extract and face systemic exploitation. The ore they extract is sold through an opaque supply chain to companies and countries outside the DRC.

At Tilwezembe mine 30km from the town of Kolwezi, Amnesty International found evidence of abusive and harmful labour conditions and ill-treatment. Frequent injuries and some fatal accidents occurred at the mine site – including as a result of landslides, falling boulders and asphyxiation due to a lack of adequate ventilation.

The artisanal miners at Tilwezembe sold their ore to Misa Mining, a private trading company operating at the site. State agencies, including police, were also present at Tilwezembe to oversee mining but did nothing about the appalling, life-threatening working conditions. Misa Mining claimed it was unaware of human rights problems at Tilwezembe.

“Greater transparency in the supply chain could help to prevent abuses such as those we found at Tilwezembe,” said Gaughran.

“If all companies involved in the extractive industry carried out due diligence checks to ensure that they are not purchasing ore and minerals extracted under exploitative and degrading conditions, this would go a long way to clean up the mineral trade.”

Do we exist?

Are we just vivid creations of god.
What about those who don’t believe?

I could list many questions we all want answered.
Like why do I feel alone? Because you moan to much.
Why do people moan?
Because their not alone.
We’re surrounded by people,
Supposed to be equal.
But why claim were an individual,
Because that don’t makes us equal.

People want and need.
One of the seven deadly sins is greed.
The media feed our brains,
And plant harmful seeds.

Doubt

Doubt kills everybody.
Assumption, consumes you mentally.
Fixated together creminanted to decease.

Disease our lungs.
Forever indebted to our soul.
Asking for forgiveness.
Hope to achieve the impossible,
To make others believe,
Can be impossible.

Crucify our body’s to help maintain an image, that’s hard to explain to a small innocent child.
A child born into society that’s meant to be kind.

Man kind forgotten for what they really are.
Builders of our world today you see a man.
We see many,
Some women are not fans; funny how there’s men in women.

Women become mothers,
Cradling their children’s manifesting in their lives to be greater than theirs.

Does anybody care?
I ask you again do we exist?

For the people that slit their wrist, blood stained skin, popped veins.
They no longer want to be placed here on earth.
They feel their under a curse.

What’s worse is they leave us
Could we of helped?

Do we exist?

Once buried and no longer touchable
We lived! To say we exist.
The people will carry on our name.

A name we were provided when we were born.

Birth/Born
We were placed on earth

We exist.

We all hold this nostalgia-tinged idea of the perfect British summer’s day; hazy golden sunshine, picnics in the park with no wasps, ice-cold Pimms, tennis and, of course, perfect strawberries. Even for those who would never go near a pick-your-own, everyone seems to be able to remember a day from the past when strawberries were so sweet and juicy that they tasted like the very essence of the summer.

I sit here typing this on what should be just such a beautiful June afternoon; however, in what has become the norm these last few years, it is raining, grey and dreary. In the hope of evoking part of what is part of the sepia-tinged dream of a perfect British summer, I turn to strawberries.

Now is the very best time to buy and eat British strawberries. The season started a little late this year due to all the rain, but now it is in full flow. When choosing strawberries, look out for Sonata, Sweet Eve and Eve’s Delight, all of which are high in natural sugar with a gorgeous perfume and longer shelf life than some other types. Avoid at all costs the ubiquitous Elsanta, which accounts for a staggering 80% of all supermarket sales of strawberries in the UK. This is because they are cheap and easy to grow-even if they seem to look and smell great, please don’t be fooled. They have a habit of tasting like wet cotton wool rather than a fruit; they are a poor substitute for the real thing.

Beautiful English strawberries

If, like a lot of people, you can’t get to a pick-your-own, the best places to get strawberries are usually farmer’s markets; instead of a hefty £2.50 for a tiny punnet of Elsanta awfulness in the supermarket, I got four boxes of beautiful Sonata strawberries for £3 the other day. Look for berries that are unblemished and bright red with fresh-looking green leafy caps. The fruit should be not too firm and not too soft (there should be no dampness on the bottom of the container). The scent is a brilliant indicator of quality and should be slightly floral, fresh and almost uplifting in its sweetness. Smaller strawberries often have more flavour, but do not discount the big juicy ones either. They are a fruit that absorbs water really easily and so it is best not hull them before they are washed.

Of course, when strawberries are as good as this, they need nothing added to them to make them sublime to eat. A little cream, perhaps some vanilla ice-cream. It is easy to while away the summer doing just this and suddenly, come September, they are gone for another year.

To ease this inevitable dissapointment, I have been experimenting with the oldest way of bringing a bit of the wonderful parts of the English summertime to any grey day. in other words, jam.

I know what you are thinking; it’s just too much hassle, too difficult and fiddly, with expensive thermometers, sterilising and scary boiling sugar. Anyway, who has time to make their own jam these days? Until quite recently, I thought the same thing, especially as I thought I was quite happy with the jam I was buying from the local deli. However, I was converted when I realised how simple and quick it is to do. In total honesty, this recipe is genuinely very easy and the result is better than anything you can buy. I have found that you do not need special jam sugar, a jam thermometer or an expensive preserving pan. All you need is the biggest stainless steel pan you have, as the jam bubbles up quite alarmingly as you boil it, any kind of glass jars you may have accumulated and some great fruit. The only ‘specialist’ equipment you might want to use are the small waxed discs you can find in a lot of supermarkets and in any kitchen shop. These stop the jam getting any mould on the top, but this shouldn’t be a problem if you sterilise the jars properly. In any case, it will probably have been eaten before there is a chance of any mould growing. It also saves a lot of mess if you have a funnel of some sort, but you can manage without one.

You can also add any other flavours that take your fancy and you will end up with a jam you could never buy in the shops. you can add raspberries, blueberries or redcurrants. you can even add a slosh of Prosecco or Champagne if you are feeling flush. At the risk of sounding like a 1950s housewife, it is also nice to feel a bit smug and terribly domesticated to have someone taste it and ask where you bought it. ‘Oh this, it’s homemade actually.’ I have seen lots of really cute labels and fabric covers to use on your jars-I love these but for some reason, all I seem to be able to stretch to are Post-It notes which keep coming off. Oh well, I obviously must work harder on this domestic goddess thing.

Strawberry and Vanilla Jam

makes about 4 average sized jars

Ingredients

1kg strawberries, washed and hulled

800g caster sugar

Juice of 2 lemons

2 vanilla pods, seeds scraped out

Method

First, sterilise your jars; this simply means washing the jars and lids in hot soapy water, rinsing and popping in an oven set to about 140°C while you make the jam. Nothing scary.

Put a saucer in the freezer.

If you have a blender, blitz the sugar and the whole vanilla pods together so you have a beautifully speckled vanilla sugar. If you don’t, just scrape the seeds into the sugar and mix, adding the pods as well. Put your strawberries in the pan and cover with the sugar. Keep about 10 of the smallest strawberries back so they stay whole-an unknown treat in bought jam. Leave overnight if you have the time, otherwise, an hour will do.

Add the lemon juice, take a potato masher or fork and roughly mash the strawberries and sugar together. It is better if you keep some texture to the strawberries rather than bash them to a puree. Add the reserved whole strawberries and put the pan on a very gentle heat and stir gently. It’s really important to melt the sugar slowly, otherwise the jam will have sugar crystals in it.

When the sugar has completely dissolved, bring the heat up to high. Keep stirring the mixture until the mixture is boiling. This can be the alarming bit-the mixture will rise high up as it boils and look quite volcanic.

Boiling the jam

Keep the mixture at a roiling boil for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Take the pan off the heat and get your saucer out of the freezer. Place a small dollop of the mixture onto it. Leave it a moment and then push the edge of the dollop gently with your finger. If the surface wrinkles, your jam has reached setting point, if it doesn’t, put the pan back on the heat and boil for another 3-4 minutes. Repeat the saucer test until the surface of the mixture wrinkles on the saucer and you can see the jam has set.

Take the pan off the heat and leave it to rest for 15 minutes. At the same time, take the jars out of the oven, being careful not to touch the inside of the jar or the lids. You need the jars warm when you fill them, as cold jars will crack when filled with hot jam. I know this from bitter experience.

After fifteen minutes, use your funnel, or a large spoon, to put the jam into the jars. Do be careful, as the mixture will still be really hot. Fill to the brim and place a waxed disc on top. Screw the lid on tightly and leave to cool completely.

This jam will last for up to a year if stored in cool place, out of direct sunlight. Once opened, it must go into the fridge.

Reading Scott Thornbury’s A-Z of ELT, which seems to be an enlightening read as a new EFL prof

Reading Scott Thornbury’s A-Z of ELT, which seems to be an enlightening read as a new EFL professional, it wasn’t long before I came to the section on adjectives. As with all English grammar, as a native speaker I unconsciously knew that adjectives had order although I was unaware of any analysis of what that order is. Having looked in a few other places too it seems that there are some different ideas of what the categories (or the number of them) in that order is.

Scott Thornbury starts with this position:

determiner

adjectives

noun

evaluation

size

age

colour

defining

a

lovely

little

antique

Chinese

vase

three

enormous

red

plastic

roses

Most articles however define these categories:

Opinion

Size

Age

Shape

Colour

Origin

Material

Purpose

Here Opinion takes the place of Evaluation. We find then that Shape must come between Age and Colour. Thornbury’s defining also can be broken down into Origin, Material and Purpose. Not satisfied enough I found Evaluation referred to as Observation and Purpose referred to as Qualifier. Another worksheet added in Condition between Shape and Age. Another adds Religion after Origin.

So the order so far:

Determiner

a

Evaluation

nice

Size

little

Age

old

Condition

broken

Shape

round

Colour

red

Origin

Tibetan

Religion

Buddhist

Material

fibreglass

Purpose

fishing

Noun

rod

Does anyone know of any more to add? Where does temperature go for instance? Although we only use it with up to 3 adjectives, isn’t it simply amazing that we learn to instinctively apply this order?

That has blown my mind. Thanks Scott Thornbury.

The importance of good grammar has been underscored time and again by linguaphiles. How can you improve yours? What does it take to be a skilful editor?

A good command of the language is something you acquire quite naturally if you’ve been an avid reader. Constant exposure to the language, speaking it at home and with your friends, watching programs on television, listening to music, and watching movies—all definitely help you hone your skills in the language. But there’s more to it than that. You need to master the rules of grammar, starting from the parts of speech to rules of punctuation as outlined by style guides, such as The Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications or The Chicago Manual of Style, for instance.

When you combine the ability to spot ‘something odd’ about a sentence with your knowledge of grammar, what you have is a workable solution to help you fix the sentence. Editing, in my opinion, can be as precise as a science, with very clear rules about what’s right and what’s not. But the beauty of language lies in its artistic appeal—the cadence of a well-written sentence can be lyrical. And this is not necessarily limited to novels, short stories, plays, or fiction.

A beautifully constructed sentence is a joy to read, even if it appears in business documentation or marketing collateral. In fact, a well-written brochure could persuade the reader into buying your product or solution, leading to better business outcomes for your company. What would definitely mar the impact of your brochure would be if it were riddled with grammatical errors, laced with faulty punctuation, and held together by only a string of facts.

A love for the language provides that spark, which when stoked, bursts into a consuming passion to write, edit, or otherwise ‘create’. If you are nodding enthusiastically as you read this, you know the (almost physical) pain you experience when you read a sentence that goes ‘He hung himself to death’ or ‘I have a news for you’. Makes you want to hang yourself!

Topic 1: In some countries children have very strict rules of behavior, in other countries they are

Topic 1: In some countries children have very strict rules of behavior, in other countries they are allowed to do almost anything they want. To what extent should children have to follow rules?

To extent to which children have to follow rules depends on the culture of country they live. In Western countries it tends to grant the children greater of freedom of their behaviors, while in Asian countries the children must not do anything that your parents or adult do not like. I think that following strict rules of behavior has both advantages and disadvantages as I discuss below.

The rules were built to follow and keep peaceful society orderly. Children learn to integrate in the society so they must follow the rules which built to control society. Children do not aware of effects what they do so they need to follow strict rules of behavior if they want to become good people and have brighter future. As children grow up, they become mature, start working in any community or company. Any organization always appreciates workers’ integrations when anyone comes in as an internal part.

In other personal development side, each child needs to grow up on his own way. As he seeks his own independence, rules might be useless at a certain stage of his life. He even sometimes responds the rule by fighting adults, abandon instead of obeying what he was told. He sometimes needs his own atmosphere to do what they want to improve his creativity. Each child has his own inside genius which must be explored by him. He doesn’t grow up and get his own life if he always depends on his parents too much.

To conclude, strict rules of behavior build for children to follow, otherwise parent need to leave their children have own space to improve their creativity.
