I’m hooked with my iPhone these past few months playing around with all kinds of apps and stuf

I’m hooked with my iPhone these past few months playing around with all kinds of apps and stuff. It has become my new plaything at the moment (Sorry PSP). There are so many good apps available and some really bad ones but I would like to share with you first my favourite iPhone games:

10. Bejeweled 2- A straightforward puzzle game but really addictive, especially if you aim to get a higher score.

9. Enigmo- A very quirky brainteaser filled with lots of frustration and fun. Nothing punishing about this game which is a good thing. Did I mention it’s totally revolutionary?

8. Tap Tap Revenge- A Guitar Hero clone in some ways but it’s really not too shabby. I discovered a lot of new songs from Tap Tap like 3OH!3’s Don’t Trust Me, Daft Punk’s Technologic, Weezer’s We Wish You A Merry Christmas, etc.

7. Spore: Origins- It may not be as good as the PC version but having to have your microscopic creature swim around in your iPhone is just out of this world. Still haven’t finish this game though but I will get there eventually.

6. Silent Hill: The Escape- Pretty exciting game for the iPhone although it could use more stages, weapons and better storyline and replayability. At least you get to replay the game as an alien with a laser gun. Rad! Silent Hill begs for a sequel.

5. Resident Evil: Degeneration- I really like the Degeneration movie because I feel it handles its source material pretty well than the lousy Milla Jovovich trilogy. Although the game mechanics is a true RE4 clone, Degeneration on the iPhone is surprisingly good.

4. Duke Nukem 3D- The latest edition on my iPhone, Duke Nukem 3D is a real surprise to me cos I didn’t expect for the game to be made available on the iPhone. Good port but the controls could’ve been better. Definitely recommended for those who are truly disappointed with Duken Nukem Forever’s demise.

3. Metal Gear Solid Touch- A great 2D shooting game from Hideo Kojima himself. I was skeptical when the game first came out cos it didn’t really look impressive when I saw the screenshots. But after the price went down I decided to give it a try and wow, this game’s surprisingly good. Simple concept but fun like hell. Definitely not recommended if you haven’t played MGS4 on the PS3.

2. Tiger Woods PGA Tour- Tiger Woods rocks! And this game rocks too. PGA Tour is probably the only sports game I ever played and the iPhone version is not too shabby either. The Tour is a whole lot of fun if you’re the competitive type and the feeling of having Eagles and Birdies is so beautiful. The only thing I hate about this game is the two annoying commentators. Their comments are just so cruel. If only you can shut them up.

1. Wolfenstein 3D- As classic as it is, Wolfenstein 3D is still the king of FPS game. To be honest, this is my first time playing the game and it brings me such pleasure being able to play this great PC port on the go. Way to go, John Carmack!

There are other games I wish to download such as Doom, Doom: Resurrection, Tetris and more but I wanna wait a bit longer until the prices reduce, but as for Doom, it’ll have to wait some more since it’s not out yet. I have other games that I’ve downloaded and tried but I wasn’t impressed with any of them at all. There are Crash Racing, Cro Mag Rally, Pac Man, Time Crisis, Flick Fishing and Space DeadBeef. The reason I bought them is because of the iPhone ads. These games were in them and you just couldn’t help it but to download it yourself. Please don’t get these games.

With so many games coming out, I couldn’t help it but to pray that the respective developers will port the following games to the iPhone:

1. Star Wars: Dark Forces- This is the first FPS Star Wars game ever and it’s truly a great game even though it was panned as a Doom clone. LucasArts just released the Monkey Island remake on the App Store. Why not this one?

2. Day of The Tentacle- Another LucasArts game but this one’s an adventure game. A genuine SCUMM game at its finest.

3. Jones In The Fast Lane- A classic PC game in the early 90’s and it was a true family classic.

4. Ghostbusters- The developers should apply the Ghostbusters: The Video Game (The Nintendo DS version) into the iPhone. That would be awesome.

5. Batman- I just had an idea of having a 2D beat-em-up Batman game like the Adventures of Batman & Robin and Batman Returns on the Super NES or Batman and Return of The Joker on the NES, so I hope someone can come up with an iPhone version where you get to beat the living daylights out of Batman’s foes on the go. That would be wonderful.

6. Prisoner of Ice- One of my favourite Call of Cthulhu games. It was scary the first time I played it and it will most certainly do the same to you too.

iPhone is truly an amazing gadget. For those of you who aren’t sure of what games to get for your iPhone, I’d say check out the games that I listed out on my Favourite list above. But if you don’t have an iPhone, then what on earth are you waiting for? Get one now!

Today we are going to review a game called Enigmo. The point of the game is to get the water droplets in to the jar. There are little pieces in the middle on the left. those are the things that bounce the water so that they can get in to the jar. The bonus on the top right says a number. The number will keep going down unless you make it in to the jar before it stops That is called bonus points. We would rate this game a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The game is 2.99 and it is a great game!

This piece was first published at iPGN. To see my original article, click here.

I’m currently drowning under a deluge of updates. It’s kinda fun. With the new 3.0 firmware having recently dropped, publishers are rushing to get their newly-improved games to the public. I’ve gotten updates or new releases of Baseball Sluggers, Star Defense, and Enigmo so far. I’m willing to be that there will be more by the time I’ve finished writing this.

Oh, here comes Leaf Trombone. Sweet.

While I won’t be among the lucky few getting the new iPhone 3G S, I do get to use the new firmware – it’s the every-man’s upgrade, providing you ignore the fact that us second-class iPod Touch users have to pay $9.95 for it. It’s a fair price, though, for all the fun little upgrades I’m getting. I won’t really be going into detail on them here – expect that in a later piece. Here are the things I’m enjoying so far:

Plus+: Ngmoco’s social gaming service is now available. I was expecting to have to download a separate application, but they’ve thoughtfully built it into their games. There’s now a small Plus+ button on the top right of my Star Defense screen. The service is relatively simple, but well thought out – you’ve got the ability to set a profile pic and status, receive news on Ngmoco’s most recent efforts, buy their other games you haven’t purchased yet (that’s a nice incorporation of the in-app purchasing feature), send challenges to other users, and compete for leaderboard positions. There’s also an achievement system they’re calling “gamerpoints;” it’s already making me feel like I need to earn more commendations in Star Defense.

I’m not sure what Ngmoco’s position is on letting other developers build in support for the service, but that would really make it the killer gaming feature of the update. Much, much worse would be if others roll out copy-cat services and you have to register and invite friends a dozen times over for each different publisher’s games.

Star Defense: Bug fixes, the ability to challenge friends using the Plus+ service, another of the worlds, Rydhon, has been added to the Challenge mode. You can now send friends direct challenges using push notification.

Enigmo: Users can now purchase additional level packs from in-game.

Leaf Trombone: Using the new push capability for apps, Leaf Trombone now lets you know whenever someone judges your performance. Also, if you’ve got a model with Bluetooth you can now play duets with your friends. Given my lack of musical talent and the company I keep, I imagine that would only end badly. It’s a cool feature, though.

Baseball Slugger: There aren’t any updates (other than you know, the game being available), but I would like to point out a couple of things. First of all, see the icon for it? I made that happen. I didn’t sketch it, or help come up with the design, or do any sort of collaborative work. Actually, I mostly just told them they should make a new icon. Still… I’m totally taking credit for that. Also, I’m kinda bummed that the upgrades I earned during the beta aren’t carrying over to the retail version. Them’s the breaks, I guess.

Rest assured the App Store will be seeing many more updates over the next few weeks as publishers incorporate 3.0 firmware capabilities into their games. Additionally, I fully anticipate paid content becoming available in games like Sims 3. More and more games will be offering the App Store equivalent of DLC (downloadable content) with new in-game purchasing. I’ll be honest – I fully expect a lot of developers to put out half-baked content in an attempt to ride the hype of the new firmware. Don’t always buy the new stuff just because you can. After everything has settled down a bit though, we should begin to see some creative uses of this feature that are of benefit to end-users.

PS: if anyone wants to play against me in Baseball Slugger or challenge me in Star Defense, my usernames are Mrexplode and mrEXPLODE, respectively (Baseball Slugger is case-sensitive, I think). Bring it on!

10. Rolando Rolando In this game, you are a funny, round litte character, who has to complete missio

10. Rolando

Rolando

In this game, you are a funny, round litte character, who has to complete missions and save the King multiple times. It is a great little game. I have killed countless hours playing this on my iTouch.

9. iShoot

iShoot

Yet another shooting/war game. You are a tank, and basically what you do is, fight and try to kill other tanks. There is a wide range of weapons from which you can select. The more tanks you kill and the less damage you recieve, the more money you will earn. This money is used to purchase weapons, of course. You can also move around and get closer to your enemy. It’s a lot of fun.

8. Topple.

Topple

This game is a little, but not very, similar to Tetris. It is a modernized version of the age-old classic game. In topple, the aim of the game is to build the highest tower without “toppling” over. You can tilt your iPod to control or you can use your finger.

7. Tap-Tap Revenge.

Tap Tap Revenge

Arguably, the greatest app ever made for the iPhone or iTouch. Listen to music and tap the beats as they near the bottom of your screen. Remind you of Guitar Hero? Well, it should, because it is very similar.

6. Super Monkey Ball

Super Monkey Ball

Become and monkey and try to get to the “Goal”, while trying to get all the bananas and not falling over the edge. I enjoy this game, but I have come close to breaking my iTouch in frustration; that’s how addictive it gets. That’s what makes it such a great app though.

5. Toybot Diaries

Toybot Diaries

In this game’s storyline, you are a little metal robot, who has fallen in a sewer and has to get to the surface again. You go through countless levels, using your magent ability to pull you, trying to find your way out of the sewer.

4. Enigmo

Enigmo

One of the most addicting games ever developed for the iTouch. Dozens of levels of dropping, bouncing, and sliding just to get some water droplets in a jug. Easily the hardest and most challenging game I have ever played on the iTouch. Worth every penny!

3. Motochaser

Moto Chaser

What high-speed motorcycle racing game has ever been bad? It is simply impossible. This game has quite a hard learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you will not stop playing.

2. Flight Control

Flight Control

In this game, you are a flight controller, who is responsible for directing all types of aircraft to a safe landing. It consists of big jets, small charter planes, and even helicopters. You have to drag a line from the plane to the landing strip, all the while avoiding collisions.

1. iCopter

iCopter

Ah, who would have thought? The most simplistic game, and yet the best one on the list. This game is simply too addicting and too time-consuming not to put in the number one spot. Out of all the games I have ever played on my iPod, this is probably the one I have wasted the most time playing. And for that reason, it deserves the number one spot on the list.

Gaming on a mobile phone is a relatively new phenomenon when compared to the decades that games like

Gaming on a mobile phone is a relatively new phenomenon when compared to the decades that games like Pacman and Tetris have been around. However, the mobile gaming industry is exploding, and developers who have spent years creating games for the Mac are now jumping ship to create them for the iPhone instead.

Brian Greenstone, creator of the popular iPhone game Enigmo, says his company, Pangea Software, has sold over 800,000 copies in the last six months and netted $1.5 million in the process. Though the company at one time only created games for the Mac, the success of Enigmo has persuaded them to focus exclusively on developing games for the iPhone.

Greenstone says the company didn’t originally plan to go that route. In an interview with The Guardian online, he said, “The iPhone SDK came out, and we were just going to do some apps for fun. The next thing you know, the apps were making the Mac stuff look like a joke. The Mac stuff is like lunch money compared to what the iPhone does so there’s basically no point in going…back to the Mac.” He also says the iPhone is a much more entertaining platform to develop for and makes “50 times more” than similar games for the Mac.

Is this a sign of things to come? Not necessarily. As mocoNews.net’s Dianne See Morrison points out, random luck had a lot to do with Enigmo’s success. “For a start, [Greenstone] concedes that Pangea, as a long standing maker of Mac games, ‘got a lot of love from Apple,’ including being highlighted in the App Store.” Of course, getting a spot in the App Store’s Top 100 didn’t hurt either.

Randomness and good luck aside, it’s entirely possible that Mac game development will slow as the iPhone continues its march toward ubiquity. As evidenced by the wide array of productivity apps that we cover here, the iPhone is gaining traction as a plausible stand-in for a laptop. Add to that the fact that many people haul around a Nintentdo DS or PSP around for gaming-on-the-go, and it’s easy to see that there’s a niche ready to be filled by mobile gaming apps. I’m not ready to sound the death knell on games developed especially for the Mac, but I definitely expect it to take a downturn over the next couple of years.

My Diary
