Don’t quite know how to show your dad some love this weekend? Perhaps the Great Galena Balloon Race in northern Illinois can be your destination! With a plethora of different events taking place over three days, there is sure to be something to make Dad smile.

On Friday, the Balloon Launch, Alefest and Night Glow are the highlights of the day. The Balloon Launch, starting at 6 pm, provides the curious or the adventurous with the opportunity for a balloon ride. The Alefest features over 100 beer styles. Cost of admission is $20 for this event, which includes craft beer samplings, a tasting glass and guide, and live entertainment. The event is from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, and participants must be 21 years of age or older. The Night Glow begins around 8:45 pm, when all of the balloons light up the night sky.

Saturday’s festivities include a Collectors Car Show featuring over 40 collector cars from Antique Town Roads of Galena, High Point Cruisers of Scales Mound, Mainstreet Cruisers of DBQ, and Southwest Wisconsin Auto Club. There is plenty of entertainment for children as well, including tethered balloon rides, face painting, and bounce houses. The big event, the Great Galena Balloon Race, will take place at 6:00 pm. A must-see!

Sunday provides the last chance to see all of the balloons in the air until next year’s festival. This “Crack of Dawn” balloon race will give your family a good head start on a family brunch or lunch in the area.

With races, tethered rides, a car show, live music and an Alefest on Friday night, it’s hard to imagine not having a good time! Not only does the weekend-long event provide many activities for the whole family, but the proceeds benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The events will be taking place on the North Course Practice Range at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa. To reach the parking area, follow Highway 20 to Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa. Take Eagle Ridge Drive to Thunder Bay Road. Take a left at Thunder Bay Road to reach the parking area. Shuttles will be available to take you directly to the site from there.

For more information, visit the event’s website here.

While a gift is a great way to show dad you care, a memorable dad date can take it to a whole new level and cement his June 20, 2010, among the elite in the pantheon of great Father’s Days.

Here are a few suggestions to give dad something he’ll never forget.

Check out some vintage cars. Dads love cars, and even if they’re not a complete gear head, most can still appreciate a thing of beauty such as a ’62 Corvette. Car gawking at these locations could be a fun, inexpensive way to spend a day: Route 66 Classics, Countryside; Country Classic Cars, Staunton; Gateway Classic Cars, Fairmont City; D&M Corvette, Downers Grove.

Take him out to the ball game. The Chicago Cubs and Peoria Chiefs have home games the weekend of Father’s Day. You can grab Cubs tickets from Stub Hub for as little as $22. Chiefs tickets range from $7 to $10.

Treat him to balloons, beer and cars at the Great Galena Balloon Race. The festival’s Ale Fest will feature more than 100 craft beers and the car show will showcase 40-plus collector’s cars. Hot air balloon rides will be available throughout the festival, and each night there will be a “Nightglow Extravaganza,” where each and every hot air balloon will be lit-up.

Take a hike at one of Illinois’ gorgeous state parks. If the weather holds up, Starved Rock, Shawnee National Forest and Wild Prairie State Park are great areas to explore and take in all that nature has to offer. It’ll also give your pops an opportunity to show that he’s not as old as you might think he is.

Catch your dinner. Boats and canoes can be rented at most state parks, which also happen to be great fishing spots. Lake Shelbyville in Shelbyville, Mermet Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area in Belknap and Tampier Lake in Palos are a few to check out. Just don’t forget to grab a fishing license before you head out.

See a show. If he’s a fan of Elton John, Billy Elliot the Musical features John’s music and runs Father’s Day weekend at Ford Center for the Performing Arts in Chicago. Sugar, which is based off the movie “Some Like It Hot,” is playing at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace, as well.

Of course, there’s only one way to cap off a memorable dad date, and that’s by creating a tasty necktie cake. I’m not quite sure how, but doesn’t it look delicious?

So, how do you plan on celebrating Father’s Day? What’s your ideal dad date? Let us know!

Enjoy a fun day at the park with your family and view amazing sculptures at the Summer Sol-a-Bration, Saturday, June 19, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Governors State University campus in University Park. The Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park is planning a family oriented event that should bring a smile to everyone in attendance. Activities for the entire family include: sculpture trading cards, Build-A-Sculpture, build and fly a kite, a Body Rolling Derby (roll down a grassy hill!) and other games and activities for kids of all ages.

One of the great things is that admission and parking are FREE. Some of the activities will have a nominal charge and refreshments and food are available on campus. It’s easy to find – just a mile from Exit 339 on I-57 and only about 34 miles from the Loop! If you’re in Chicago, take the Electric Line one hour south from Millennium Park station to University Park.

If you’re a sports fan in Chicago, this June might be one of the best months of your life. The Blackhawks can win their first championship in nearly 50 years tonight and less than 72 hours later, we’ll be transitioning from Lord Stanley’s Cup to the World Cup.

The United States soccer team will begin competitive international play against England this Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and whether you’re a huge soccer fan or just a casual supporter, nothing matches the excitement of watching a World Cup game at a legitimate soccer bar (well, unless you’re flying out to South Africa).

Here are a few spots that are sure to deliver the best 90 minutes of your weekend.

The Globe Pub
1934 W. Irving Park (North Center)
The Globe Pub may be the best known soccer (or football) pub in Chicago. The Globe’s menu is pretty comprehensive and includes sandwiches, burgers, salads, pasta, quesadillas, etc. They also have a pretty extensive breakfast menu for those arriving at 8 a.m. to watch a game that starts at noon. The best thing about Globe, though, is its beer selection. It rivals Hop Leaf for beer supremacy in Chicago and has a wide selection of draft and bottled ales, lagers and stouts.

The Globe also runs a luxury cruiser to Toyota Park for Chicago Fire and Chicago Red Stars home games. Game tickets need to be purchased in advanced, but the $15 service includes transportation and refreshments.

Ginger’s Ale House
3801 N. Ashland (Lakeview)

Soccer fans at Ginger's Ale House, Photo by Clint McMahon

For the past four years, Ginger’s Ale House has been named the #1 soccer bar in the country by USSoccer.com. Soccer is shown all week at the Ale House, including just about every English, Scottish and European game you’ll want to watch. Leading up to the World Cup opener Ginger’s will feature many of the International Friendly games on its 20+ TVs.

While its beer selection isn’t as extensive as Globe’s, its specials are. Ginger’s has $4 drafts throughout the month of June, as well as $3 Bitburgers and $2 Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. You can also grab fish and chips, beef sliders and meatball subs on special for $5 during select week days.

Small Bar
2049 W. Division (Ukrainian Village)
1415 W. Fullerton (Lincoln Park)
Small Bar has three locations in Chicago, but its Ukrainian Village and Lincoln Park branches are the best spots to catch the World Cup. While Small Bar is, in fact, small, it has a huge selection of food and an even larger selection of beer. Click here for its massive drink menu. The pulled pork nachos coupled with a pale ale happen to be my favorite combination.

Small Bar is having a special World Cup promotion, too. Since it’s showing all 64 games in high-definition, those who make Small Bar their World Cup home will be rewarded with a free draft beer for watching four games, free dinner after eight games, a pair of Chicago Fire tickets after 32 games and – if you watch 60+ games – a 2010 USA World Cup jersey.

USA is predicted by many to advance past its first group, so there should be plenty of games to watch this summer. Where do you plan on watching them?

The Groupon Cat

Most people don’t know this, but social commerce pioneer Groupon started in Chicago less than 2 years ago. I had a chance to visit their HQ in the 600 West Chicago Ave building that also houses Japonais and the David Barton Gym. The space, which used to house the now-defunct Montgomery Ward offices, is beautiful.

I was visiting Groupon HQ to shoot a final project for school and I walked away from the experience with some mind-boggling information. Since its inception in November 2008, it now has 440,000 subscribers in Chicago alone, 4.4 million nationally. Groupon expanded internationally into Toronto and Vancouver earlier this year, with plans to be in the UK by 2011.

Groupon is at its most useful when you’re trying to find something good to do in Chicago, or 55 other metropolitan areas. Enthusiasts oftentimes check it when they know they will be traveling to another American city, because they trust Groupon’s finger on the pulse of what’s hot, new and fun.

Personally, I find it serves another practical, more psychological purpose. I struggle with my budget, going through boom and bust cycles—happiest when there’s lots of money in the accounts, depressed when I’m broke. With Groupon, that spare ramen in the back of the pantry is collecting dust—the next time I’m completely devoid of funds, find me at Café Laguardia, Karyn’s on Green, or The Drawing Room—the three I’ve purchased so far.

Poverty never tasted so good!

Chicago will play host to one of the most powerful, riveting and socially relevant film festivals in

Chicago will play host to one of the most powerful, riveting and socially relevant film festivals in the world beginning June 3.

The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival will present 12 distinguished fiction, documentary and animated films and videos from around the world that showcase the heroic stories of activists and survivors who have faced real threats to their freedom, their dignity and to their own lives.

Seven films will be seen in Illinois for the very first time.

The festival kicks off with a benefit screening of The Oath on June 3 at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Oath, which recently drew praises from The New York Times and The New Yorker, tells the story of Abu Jandal, Osama bin Laden’s former bodyguard, and Salim Hamdan, a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay Prison and the first man to face the controversial military tribunals. Filmed in Yemen and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, The Oath is a family drama about two men whose fateful encounter in 1996 set them on a journey that would lead to Osama bin Laden, 9/11, Guantanamo Bay Prison, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Oath’s director, Laura Poitras, will be at the event that night to speak with the audience after the film, alongside Human Rights Watch’s Terrorism and Counterterrorism director. Ticket information is available here.

The festival continues through June 10 at Facets Cinematheque (1517 W. Fullerton). Facets will be showing 11 amazing films– from Afghan Star, which follows the first season of the Afghan version of American Idol, to My Neighbor, My Killer, which documents the reconciliation process between Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda, to Youth Producing Change, which blends clips from winners of Human Rights Watch’s inspiring annual youth film contest.

The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival has something for everyone.

– Cathy Stein is a volunteer for Human Rights Watch and co-chairs the June 3 benefit screening

Chicago's Southport Neighborhood by John Noltner On assignment, Chicago-based Midwest Living co

Chicago's Southport Neighborhood by John Noltner

On assignment, Chicago-based Midwest Living contributing writer Elaine Glusac explores the Mag Mile plus a crop of up-and-coming neighborhoods that ooze personality and style, along with retail energy. For more Illinois getaways, check out the special section, Drive, Eat, Shop in Midwest Living’s May/June 2010 issue.

The shopping scene doesn’t get any better than in Chicago, especially when I explore beyond the Mag Mile. Here’s my take on the Mile and current short list of districts worthy of a trip (Better yet, trips).

Magnificent Mile

Even though we’re rarely in the market for a Ferragamo bag or a Tiffany necklace I never let out-of-town guests leave without shopping the Magnificent Mile. Chicago’s answer to Rodeo Drive marches north from the Chicago River to Oak Street Beach in a bustle of sidewalks crowded with bag-toting big-spenders and equally enchanted window shoppers.

Macy’s icons deserve a shout-out. The Mini Cooper version of the flagship Loop Macy’s manages to pack most of its men’s, women’s and children’s collections into seven floors. The mezzanine and second levels brim with hard-to-resist hosiery, shoes and bags. Across the street anchored by Bloomingdale’s, The 900 Shops include reliable style reservoir Club Monaco and other upscale boutiques.

Craving quiet at the Mile’s end, I love the about-face of tiny Oak Street, an intimate, intersecting lane that’s home to serene A-list outposts of Prada, Jil Sander and David Yurman boutiques. At that point, nowhere else will do for lunch but hideaway Café Spiaggia, the casual Armani Exchange to the Armani of Italian restaurants next door, Spiaggia.

Southport Avenue

I think of Southport as the Main Street of its own small town. Just a few blocks from the rowdies of Wrigley Field, the neighborhood is lined in dozens of smart shops and sophisticated restaurants serving the lucky living in two-flats nearby and the rest of us who take the L-train’s Southport stop.

The mix here runs from rock-bottom-budget at Uncle Fun, home of vintage toys and gags like rubber chickens, to wish-list luxury at Bourdage Pearls featuring the namesake gemstones in styles from Jackie-O strands to funky pendants. Nearby Tula walks the fine fashionista line between cool and comfort with tailored Inhabit sweaters, the smart Nicole Farhi collection and a well-edited collection of bags and baubles to match.

The open-faced sandwiches, pear and brie baguettes and Black Forest mousse channel Old World grace at Julius Meinl Coffee House, a direct-from-Vienna café where, in European style, the servers don’t mind if you linger for hours.

Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park by John Noltner

The well-heeled of Lincoln Park, a residential neighborhood of rehabbed brownstones and modern new-builds just west of the eponymous lakefront park, get their heels and more at a string of stylish shops laid out along eight blocks converging at Halsted St. and Armitage Ave.

The girlfriend playdate meets the DIY craft movement at 1154 Lill Studio, where you can customize your own handbag, choosing from 30-something styles and over 200 fabrics. Given the eye-crossing possibilities, I recommend bringing a friend along.

In my opinion the best souvenir in town—albeit a perishable one—is a box of Vosges Haut Chocolat. The chic, Chicago-bred confectioner infuses its truffles with exotic flavors like ginger, wasabi and curry. For a proper pick-me-up I grab a stool at the wooden bar and share plates of grilled squid and cheese-stuffed peppers at the convivial Spanish spot Café Ba Ba Reeba (another reason to bring a friend).

Bucktown/Wicker Park

Chicago doesn’t get funkier than Bucktown and Wicker Park. In the past 20 years the two adjacent near west-side neighborhoods, divided by North Ave., have gone from housing immigrants to providing studio space for artists and homes for the gentry. The dozens of small shops lining Damen, Division and Milwaukee streets cultivate an outsider edge by carrying local designers and artists.

The area’s avant-garde pioneer, p.45 is still the place to look for up-and-coming women’s wear designers like New-York-newcomers Jeffrey Monteiro, as well as local talents including Abigail Glaum-Lathbury who does layered looks. Habit picks up where p.45 leaves off, dividing its collection between local designers and fledgling labels from around the country—don’t miss the slinky dresses by Chulette.

I appreciate the blackboard-special soups, salads and panini as well as the people-watching—a mix of stroller-pushing moms and club-goers breakfasting in the afternoon—at Milk & Honey Café, a great place to lunch-break.

Andersonville

Andersonville gets its name from the area’s original Swedish settlers, but its style comes from the confluence of families and more settled singles—all here for the spacious vintage houses. It’s little surprise then that Andersonville is the place to feather your nest from a series of home design shops along chain-free Clark Street running eight blocks north of Foster Ave.

The gorgeously merchandised Brimfield—check out the antique cash register—looks like a younger, edgier Ralph Lauren. Vintage plaid fabrics cover everything from barstools to couches and the oddball finds, like 1960s bowling bags and crocheted blankets someone’s granny surely made.

Neighboring Scout specializes in midcentury modern furniture and fixtures with a bit of rustic—think huge harvest tables and pharmacy chests—thrown in for organic contrast.

From Belgian mussels to Middle Eastern mezzes, ethnic food is another of Andersonville’s draws. For the latter I like Andies Restaurant, which not only does light falafel, creamy hummus and crunchy salads, but has window-front tables that allow you to spy on the street.

Chicago-based freelancer Elaine Glusac writes about global travel for publications including Midwest Living, the New York Times and National Geographic Traveler, but shops locally in Wicker Park.

Musiem of Contemporary Art

Chicago is full of art; everywhere you look the city is bursting with creativity. From the Art Institute of Chicago to the great architecture of the city, it is hard to walk down the street without taking notice. I can remember being a young girl coming in from the suburbs and being amazed by the art all around the city. And that amazement never fades away, after living in the city for about two years now I still walk outside and the beauty of the city takes my breath away.

For those wanting to see more Chicago art but stuck on a budget, check out the Museum of Contemporary Art. This museum is free on Tuesdays but $12 dollars every other day. Currently, the museum is featuring a ‘rewind’ of modern art, displaying pieces that have been on display in the past yet again. A collaboration of art both old and new is certainly something to see.

Also, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, located on Columbia College’s campus, is free to the public. For those like me interested in photography, it’s a great place to check out some interesting work from all over. Current exhibitions include Sarah Pickering’s Incident Control and Beate Geissler/Oliver Sann’s Real Estate. What I love most about this museum is that the original and thought provoking photography.

Keep an eye out as you walk around, this city is rich in art and culture, and something new can be found around every corner.

On a breezy spring day we visited Chicago to dig up some Virginia Creeper (a native Illinois plant that’s great for wooden pergolas) . Time was short, but I could not resist a quick trip to Lincoln Square.

We drove straight to Lincoln Avenue, just southeast of Lawrence/Western on Chicago’s north side. This single block feels like a sophisticated small town. The traffic runs only one-way (southeast) so there’s less noise and rush. It’s fun to walk down the sidewalk, window-shop and take a breather here.

The diverse Lincoln Square neighborhood marks the historic heart of Chicago’s German population. Old-timers do still mix with newer transplants in the storefronts and the square itself. I’m still mourning the loss of the authentic Delicatessen Meyer’s German-speaking staff and hot Leberkäse. However, its replacement, Gene’s Sausage Shop and Delicatessen, looks quite intriguing for a future trip, and I’ve also enjoyed many delicious dinners at Barba Yianna Grecian Taverna.

On this visit we quickly found street parking, and skipped to the square. Two landmarks anchor this space: a penny-tossing fountain and the ornate Lombard Lamp (a gift from Hamburg, Germany). We were headed to the ever-cheerful Café Selmarie, which offers indoor/outdoor dining with an almost-Parisian view of couples chatting on park benches. After a lunch of delicious Croque Monsieur (grilled ham and cheese) topped off by chocolate-dipped butter cookies, my kids couldn’t wait to run around outside again.

Indian soap custom-made for Merz Apothecary

Next we crossed the street in search of soap at Merz Apothecary, a true Chicago treasure. This emporium of sweet-smelling and healthy products serves up a shopping experience from bygone times. The wood-lined walls and long counters overflow with irresistible and hard-to-find items from around the world. The staff Merz also offers homeopathic expertise and a small but excellent book selection. Their thriving online business, Smallflower.com has won media attention around the country, but please don’t miss the chance to visit in person – you won’t regret it.

Hanger 18 in Lincoln Square

Just up the street from Merz, Hanger 18 brims with uniquely cool home items, jewelry and miscellany for all ages. The owner, Tina, actively seeks out talented Chicago-based artists and companies, such as Malia Designs, a woman-owned firm founded to help disadvantaged Cambodian women. She also offers items unique to Chicago, such as the beautiful purses from Slainte (San Francisco) and Maurca Design (Boulder).

Messenger bag by Chicago's Malia Designs

Across the road, Enjoy, An Urban General Store sells lots of products, from baby clothes to silly umbrellas, that are just right for hip families and other happy people. Bookworms like me beware, those who enter The Bookcellar (an independent bookstore across from the fountain), run the risk of leaving with a great book, if not three or four. In September, don’t miss German Day (the local version of Oktoberfest), a guaranteed good-time for the whole family with brats, bier-tents, live music, and dancing.

Window-shopping at Enjoy, an Urban General Store

We were running late, so we skipped our usual stop at Timeless Toys – please don’t tell my kids! Despite the cool spring air, our poor little plants were sweltering in the back of my car, so it was time to make the trek back north to Deerpath Farm. We packed lots of fun into a wee bit time at lovely Lincoln Square.

The first stop was 9th Street Grill, a lovely restaurant with excellent daily specials. The day I visited they had a gazpacho that was to die for. A great balance of sweet tomatoes and spices that tasted so good, I asked several different ways for the recipe that the owner wasn’t ready to give up.

Main Gallery Exhibit

Our next stop was Cedarhurst Arts Center which houses an incredible collection of paintings from artists such as John Singer Sargent, Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins and Mary Stevenson Cassatt. What I enjoy most about visiting the smaller museums in Illinois is that I don’t feel as rushed as I do at the larger ones and I am able to learn more about the artists. The Cedarhurst Arts Center has a lovely sculpture garden that is perfect for warm summer days. Of course there is a lovely gift shop where I spent a few dollars and now have some new treasures of my own.

Not too far is the Jefferson County Historical Village where they have preserved many log cabins from all over the state. This attraction is only open during the summer weekends, and is definitely worth a trip. Of course I have to mention Genkota Winery, which I did not have time on this trip to stop by, but that gives me an excuse to go back!

The Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park on the campus of Governors State University (south on I-57) is a pretty amazing place – 26 monumental sculptures by huge names in the art world – Mark di Suvero (who had a show in Millennium Park a couple of years ago), and Tony Tassett’s Paul, a 30 foot fiberglass homage to Paul Bunyan that hearkens back to Michelangelo!

There’s also a temporary show of 12 cast-iron figures in a meadow by an Icelandic sculptor that are certainly worth a trip.

On behalf of the Illinois Office of Tourism, I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our spring photo contest! We received so many beautiful (and colorful!) images and I can’t thank you enough for sharing your unique perspective of Illinois with us. Over the past week, the contest received nearly 300 votes from people across the country, and today we are delighted to announce Kasia Bartnik as the winner for her photo “Spring Cantigny’s Way.” Congratulations, Kasia!

If you weren’t able to participate in this contest, stay tuned for details about our summer photo contest.

Main Street, Galena

On a recent scouting trip Kristin Bienert, Midwest Living editor, discovers great shopping and inspiring heritage in Galena, along the Rock River and in Chicago’s entertaining suburbs, including Geneva, St. Charles and Aurora. For more Illinois getaways check out the special section, Drive, Eat, Shop in Midwest Living’s May/June 2010 issue.

A vibrant downtown, too-many-to-count bed and breakfasts and three wineries keep me coming back to Galena, just about the perfect small-town getaway in my book. Come autumn, it will be just us girls at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa; then skiing at Chestnut Mountain in the winter with my husband. On this rambling, back roads trip to Chicago, I’m flying solo.

Day 1— Classics Rediscovered

Wanting to make the most of my time, I stay in the heart of historic downtown at the 1855 DeSoto House. Don’t be fooled by the quaint lobby, this place has modern conveniences, including free wifi. I like to park the car (gratis) and walk. The majority of the 100 or so shops, galleries and restaurants (no chains here!) line Main Street, just outside the landmark hotel. Some of my favorites: Lulu’s for artsy clothes, Poopsie’s for handmade jewelry and kitschy gifts, Fritz and Frites for from-scratch onion soup, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for extra-thick English toffee and just about any store with the word Galena in its name.

Day 2—Back Road Byway

Lowden State Park by Ken Ratcliff

South of Rockford, the state’s third-largest city with its own museum campus, the Rock River follows State-2, a scenic two-lane that leads to inspiring views, state parks, historic sites and pretty little towns. Less than seven miles apart, Lowden and Castle Rock state parks offer plenty of picnic spots, hiking trails and photo ops. On the bluff, overlooking the river, a 50-foot tall statue of Chief Black Hawk peeks between tree branches. In Oregon, a block off the main street, I breeze through Conover Square. The two-story former Schiller Piano Factory houses cute shops, tuned ready-to-play vintage pianos and antiques. Resident-potter Reed Bakken shapes, glazes and fires his porcelain and stoneware at Slip and Slurry Pottery. At Cook’s Collection, I eyeball gadgets I didn’t know I needed, like a pickle picker and collapsible colander. A little more time and I’d sign up for classes from Linda Hinkelmann, owner of Basket Beginnings.

Going Green Spotting a billboard for John Deere State Historic Site in Grand Detour, I feel a surge of the old childhood awe for giant, green machines. Not far down the road, a white picket fence surrounds nearly a whole city block where John Deere, a blacksmith by trade, settled in 1836. Guides lead tours of a replica of the surprisingly rustic workshop where his prairie-conquering plow was born. The neighbor’s house serves as a gift shop. No giant tractors and plows, but plenty of cute toy ones.

Day 3—Treasure Hunt More nostalgia trips in Dixon: Ronald Reagan’s two-story white clapboard boyhood home and the Lincoln Highway (State-38), the first coast-to-coast route. Zig-zagging through wide residential streets, I spot hand-painted red-white-and-blue “L” signs on telephone poles. From the Mississippi River to the Chicago suburbs, the road, now a National Scenic Byway, meanders by 40 towns. In Franklin Grove, an original marker stands in front of the Lincoln Highway National Association’s two-story limestone building. It’s a good place to pick up info about what’s ahead. On the way out, I snap a picture of the marker, less than two dozen remain in the state. Now that I know what to look for, I spot a marker in a verge, a mural on the side of a brick building in Creston and a gazebo in a DeKalb park.

The Atrium Cafe

100 Shops! A string of turn-of-the-century towns dot the Fox River just west of Chicago—one more irresistible than the next. Pretty neighborhoods of historic homes surround downtowns lined with all sorts of appealing shops and restaurants. A combination endless boutique and ultimate ladies-who-lunch spot rambling through a white mansion in Geneva, The Little Traveler might be the most seductive of all. Treasures from all over fill 36 rooms. Pulling myself away from the incredible jewelry department, I head to the sunken Atrium Cafe. A model in sleek black Capris and a fuchsia jacket slinks by, part of a daily fashion show. Note to self: bring girlfriends. Outside, I wander up and down tree-lined South Third Street, stopping at other favorites: The Paper Merchant, Cocoon for home accents and trendy clothes at the Meeting Place. With one bite, The Latest Crave becomes a new fave. Mile-high icing tops cupcakes in to-die-for flavors: key lime, lemon, red velvet, blackbottom and more. I go with carrot. Yum!

Long known as the antiques mecca, neighboring St. Charles is busy reinventing itself as a complete weekend getaway. A redone riverfront is taking shape with the historic Hotel Baker anchoring green spaces and an entertainment district. Century Gardens District on the east bank proves some things only get better with time. The dozen or so turn-of-the-century homes now hold shops. Must-stops: Town House Books & Cafe with local authors works; Stonehouse on Cedar for antiques and simple objects and Panache, a well of fabulous, one-of-a-kind jewelry made from vintage buttons, plus art and clothing, in an 1850 farmhouse.

I brake for discounts! Uh, oh. I planned to breeze on into Chicago in Aurora but all those drivers heading for the exit apparently know something I don’t. Who can pass up Chicago Premium Outlets and its literally acres of bargains? Not me. Luckily there are plenty of lodging choices nearby, too.

—Kristin Bienert, editor at Midwest Living magazine, considers her perfect trio of towns: Galena, Geneva and Chicago.

I can’t imagine my life without my mom. When I was a kid, there are very obvious reasons why having a mom was important – she fed me, helped me with my homework and taught me how to garden. As an adult, my relationship with my mom is different (though just last week I called her to ask how to cook a chicken), but probably even more important. I go to her for advice, comfort and most importantly, friendship. I would not be who I am today without her.

Moms should be appreciated every day, but this weekend is especially for them. It can be difficult trying to find something special and unique to do each year, so we created a list of things going on around the state this weekend.

The Chicago Theatre is one of the most beautiful icons in the city. I never walk down State Street without pausing to look at the bright lights that adorn this great architectural masterpiece. Now, not only can you admire the theater from the outside but now the theater offers guided tours that allows visitors to get a closer look inside. Through September 1, the Chicago Theatre will be giving tours of the building every Monday – Thursday at noon and Saturdays at 12:30 p.m.

My mom and I love historic buildings and this tour was right up our alley. We booked a tour and planned a girl’s day out in the city. We began with Peach Sparkle tea from Argo Tea on Randolph and State, conveniently right around the corner from the Chicago Theatre.

The tour guide was incredibly well informed and personable, taking his time to pause for questions as he discussed the history of the 88-year-old building. It was amazing to be able to see the theater completely empty and explore its mysteries. The tour even takes its visitors to the stage where many acclaimed legends have preformed such as Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Harry Connick Jr. It was overwhelming to be on stage looking out at the vast and elegant theater and thinking about all the great artists that have stood in the same spot.

The tour went just over an hour, leaving time for us to spend the rest of the day shopping at all of the great stores on State Street. I couldn’t imagine a better girl’s day out.

The Chicago Theater tour is $12 and tickets can be purchased online or at the theater. It is a great way to explore some behind the scenes history of Chicago.

With all of these glimpses of summer here in Chicago, it’s time to start working on your wardrobe! Sometimes the best part of the summer is being able to remove some of those winter layers and break out some great accessories.

The Silver Room

If you’re in Chicago and you’re looking for a place to ignite your creative energy, swing by The Silver Room in Wicker Park. From local artwork to hand-made jewelry, this shop is definitely a place to check out. Every month The Silver Room features various artists, like the great piece above from local artist, Hebru Brantley.

When I asked Brantley if there was anything specific he wanted me to mention about his art, in a light-hearted manner, he stated, “Man just write what you feel, if you like it, say that, if you don’t, dis’ it.” No worries here Brantley, I loved it – it was refreshing, vibrant and fun.

If you want to stay closer to the downtown area, check out a new vintage shop, Seek Vintage Chicago, which just opened in West Town and has some great finds at great prices only minutes from the Loop. While exploring the shop, I ran across a Christian Dior scarf for $12.

Five Guys

After all of your retail therapy in the Windy City, you must stop by one of the four Five Guys burgers and fries locations here in Chicago. Five Guys originally started in Virginia and is most famously known for President Barack Obama treating his staff to the “pick your toppings burgers.” With more than 20 toppings to choose from, there really is something for everyone at this burger joint.

Who knew that so many fun, fascinating stops wait just off the interstates? Midwest Living Deputy Editor, Barbara Morrow, discovers many along the remains of storied Route 66, including Springfield and its Lincoln sites and small towns such as Williamston with the Gemini Giant and main street antiques shops. For more Illinois getaways, check out the special section, Drive, Eat, Shop in Midwest Living’s May/June 2010 issue.

Just because a network of interstates speeds toward Chicago doesn’t mean you always have to stay in the fast lane. Turn off onto historic routes that take their time through serene countryside, and start your getaway with stops at unique main street shops and cafes. Once you reach the Windy City, you’ll also find plenty of reasons to veer off the beaten path, from ever evolving neighborhoods to new attractions, restaurants, lodgings and more.

Come with me as I make the trip from Southern Illinois to Chicago.

Day 1—66 Kicks and More
Paul Krumsieg is leading an impromptu tour of the B&B atop his Dr. Jazz Soda Fountain & Grille in Lebanon, Illinois (23 miles east of St. Louis), a detour on my meandering trip north to Chicago. As he describes the soda fountain classes included with stays, I’m thinking of asking him to give me the short version—maybe just how to make a milk shake or a sundae. That’s after I try the hand-cut French fries and an Italian beef sandwich, a specialty that the former Chicagoan and his wife Sarah brought with them eight years ago when they opened Dr. Jazz, reviving the oldest soda fountain in the country, complete with spinning red vinyl stools and a still functioning phone booth. And then I want to explore at least a few of the shops along the brick main street of this historic college town. Down the street, I sip specially crafted olive oils at Fezziwig’s Marketplace, assuring owner Tim Moore that I really can taste the difference between the Australian (my favorite) and the Spanish.

Cahokia Mounds by emilydickensonridesabmx

Mystery Spot
How could a whole city just disappear? The question comes back as I climb steps to the top of Monks Mound, as tall as a 10-story building and 14 acres at its base, the largest of the earthworks in Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville. Trails wind among the grassy mounds are all that remains of a full-fledged downtown that thrived here before Europeans arrived. The visitors center makes the story seem even more eerie with real looking replicas of town scenes. The museum shop turns out to be a genuine find, with an enticing collection of crafts and books about Native American heritage. I’m sure my purchases could count as research expenses.

Day 2—Authentic Connections

Cozy Dog by Tydence

I have spent fascinating days exploring Springfield area’s Abraham Lincoln sites—the state-of-the-art Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site in Petersburg to name a few. No time on this trip for the full tour, so I settle for soaking in stories about Lincoln’s days here on signs positioned around downtown. In between, I ponder lunch and shopping possibilities, all with varying degrees of decadence. Hmm … I’m sure I’ve walked enough to deserve an iconic Cozy Dog or the infamous French-fry-and-cheese-slathered Horseshoe sandwich at Maldaner’s. Maybe even the signature fudge at Del’s Popcorn. Tinsley Dry Goods keeps the legend alive with prints of Lincoln photographs and other authentic-feeling mementoes.

Day 3—Road to the Past
Legendary Route 66 runs seductively along Interstate-55 like parts of a barely remembered dream, a path to old-time town squares sprinkled with shops and cafes where you’re meant to take as much time as you want. I tool past the ornate courthouse in Pontiac and follow the old road north to Wilmington. Jetson-worthy chairs and lamps draw me into Decobob, one of the cluster of antiques dealers in the Water Street business district. The ’60s (and hopefully the metabolism that went with them) really come crashing back at the Launching Pad Drive-In. The Gemini Giant, a 28-foot Buck Rogers-throwback spaceman statue, out front practically promises consequence-free hand-dipped shakes.

Fresh
College towns are supposed to be cool, but somehow I hadn’t connected those dots for Bloomington-Normal, ISU’s home. I wandered into the city looking for predictable chain-type comfort, which I found in abundance. What I didn’t expect was so much personality. In addition to nightspots, places like Kelly’s Bakery and Cafe (from-scratch quiche! muffins!) line the redone downtown around the onetime courthouse, now the county history museum. The Bead Parlor brims with color and creative possibilities. Hand-dipped truffles and signature “ninja turtles” fill cases at The Chocolatier.

Armitage Ave. by Richie Diesterheft There is nothing like the spring and summer seasons in Chicago.

Armitage Ave. by Richie Diesterheft

There is nothing like the spring and summer seasons in Chicago. Winter has passed, the sun shines brighter and the entire city comes to life. This change in season also signals another important element – time to refresh your wardrobe!

Shopping in Chicago is one of my favorite pastimes – from the department stores and designer shops downtown to the charming neighborhood boutiques, there are always trends that inspire and designers that truly put Chicago on the map as a shopping destination.

A favorite shopping neighborhood of mine is Lincoln Park – just a quick taxi or train ride from the Magnificent Mile, Lincoln Park is filled with trendy boutiques, fantastic restaurants and quaint, tree-lined streets. You will feel like one of the locals while shopping this friendly, upscale neighborhood.

Before you start exploring the shops, I suggest fueling up on a fantastic brunch. Try Toast – a cozy spot serving mouth-watering dishes (like my personal favorite, French toast stuffed with mascarpone cheese). Nookies Too is another option, a diner-like atmosphere serving up more traditional breakfast fare.

Onto the boutiques! I recommend shopping Armitage Avenue – and a great place to start and end your shopping experience is at the Armitage Brown Line “L” stop.

Nestled near the “L” is Art Effect, a unique gift store that carries jewelry crafted by local designers, apparel, books and a huge variety of gift options (the variety of price points provide options for everyone). It is impossible to walk out of this store empty-handed!

If you have a pet you love to spoil then a visit to upscale pet accessories shop Barker & Meowsky (A Paw Firm) is a must. This spot has everything you need to spoil your furry friends, including lox & bagel dog treats, beautiful bakery items (for your pets, of course!) and designer-inspired outfits.

Lush soaps by bdjsb7

If you stroll along Armitage just a few blocks south, you will find the perfect stores for pampering yourself. If you like all-natural soaps, creams, and bubble baths pop into Lush – not only are their soap displays a sight to be seen, the fragrance will lure you in from off the street.

Swing into the iconic apothecary Kiehl’s to find unique skin care products. If you are in the mood to buy some make-up, the technicians at Colorlab Custom Cosmetics will custom-mix foundation, blush and lipstick to match your skin tone (and they save your special “formulas” so you can order more later).

Want to custom-design your own handbag, wallet, travel bag or clutch? Then 1154 Lill is the store for you. You can pick from over 50 unique bags and hundreds of fabrics and colors. Once you design your bag, 1154 Lill will manufacture and ship it to you.

Lori’s Shoes is considered by most Chicagoans, a shopping must. Not only does this boutique carry unique and fabulous shoe selections, they also have a beautiful and affordable jewelry selection – great for gifts or for treating yourself.

A one-minute stroll from Lori’s is Cynthia Rowely. The nationally-acclaimed designer got her start in Chicago and her boutique is the place to go if you are looking for a perfect party dress or chic evening wear.

After you shop Armitage Avenue, your arms might be tired from carrying so many shopping bags. After all, serious shopping should be considered a workout routine.

Treat your senses to a chocolate tasting at Vosges Haut Chocolate. Vosges has some of the most cherished and interesting chocolates in the country. From toffees to candy bars to truffles, it is hard to “have just one.” I recommend trying one of their signature truffles like the ginger and wasabi truffle or the Indian curry truffle. If you want a true Chicago chocolate experience, try the bacon bar – salty bacon mixed with rich chocolate (yum). Vosges will pair chocolates with wine or beer for you as well.

After a great brunch, an afternoon of shopping and a chocolate treat, pat yourself on the back. You explored some of the boutiques and hot spots that make Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood so special. Well done!

So what’s next? There are more unique Chicago neighborhoods to explore with endless dining, shopping and entertainment options (check out this series of videos about shopping in Chicag0). Explore and enjoy – the rest is up to you.

Cahokia Mounds There is hidden treasure in Illinois that has existed for centuries. More than 1,000

Cahokia Mounds

There is hidden treasure in Illinois that has existed for centuries. More than 1,000 years ago, Cahokia was a city of large proportions. Covering nearly six square miles, between 10,000 and 20,000 people lived in the region and more than 120 mounds were built over time. The Cahokians thrived on the vast resources of the Mississippi River valley and made significant advances in agriculture, astronomy and economics. The metropolis thrived from A.D. 700 to 1400 and then they were gone…

Today the remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico are preserved at Cahokia Mounds in southern Illinois. The site serves as the permanent home to many types of wildlife and is a popular destination for travelers. From picturesque walking trails to a fantastic world class museum (free admission!), to Heritage Days and the 100 foot high Monks Mound (the largest Earthwork in North America), Cahokia provides a fun, educational experience to its visitors.

Cahokia is rich in many things – it has an abundance of heritage and like many treasures it’s shrouded in mystery. Questions have long been asked as to what happened? Where did the people go that once built this beautiful city?

The clues that may answer those questions are still waiting to be discovered. Perhaps the answers wait amongst the 2,200 acres of the central portion of the site that are protected. If so, those clues will remain there for future generations to discover. More importantly, the answers may be hidden in the sacred mound, or amongst the 1,600 acres of still unprotected grounds that surround this prehistoric city.

Have you heard of the Pepsi Refresh Project? Pepsi promises to give substantial grants to worthy causes & charities each month that have been voted by the public into the top 10 finalist positions by the end of each month. Cahokia Mounds is a candidate for the month of April. Vote to help preserve Cahokia Mounds. Pass the word on to your family, friends and colleagues to do the same.

Keep up the campaign & thanks for helping!

Looking for a way to taste some of the best of Illinois wine without spending a weekend driving all over the state?

The Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association (IGGVA), Downtown Springfield Inc. (DSI), and the Old Capitol Foundation are teaming up again to offer the third annual Art of Illinois Wine Festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 15 and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 16 in Downtown Springfield.

Featuring 20 Illinois wineries, the event is open to anyone 21 years of age or older and will be held at the southwest corner of Fifth and Jefferson Streets in downtown Springfield (map below).

Admission is $10, which includes a wine glass and five sampling tickets. Wine may also be purchased by the glass, bottle and case.

And if the wine alone isn’t enough to bring you for a visit, the festival is situated right next to the Old Capitol Art Fair. Almost 50 years old, it’s one of the most popular, juried art fairs in the country, which was, “originally developed to contribute to the community’s cultural, social, and economic growth, the Fair has become an acknowledged success and a model for fairs in other cities.”
