Let’s try some picture effects!

Now that we have tried positioning our pictures into our post let’s take a look at some other cool things that we can also do in Live Writer with our pictures that we insert. It’s all about making a post look attractive to our readers and giving it that certain something that encourages our readers to return again and again. Maybe you are posting about a holiday that you have just taken, a wedding, a night out, a birthday celebration, or maybe you just want to illustrate your post with pictures to accentuate its content. For whatever reason, with Writer there is no need to just insert a picture and that’s the end of it, you can do so much more.

Here is a gorgeous picture of a black and white kitten. It’s ideal for illustrating what you can do with the picture effects in Live Writer. First of all, I shall place it to the left of this text and then I am going to apply Tilt to it, give it some contrast and crop it all from the Advanced tab in the Photo Menu.

Firstly I give it a Photopaper border. It now looks like a snap. I also give it a Margin of 10 to the left hand side so that my text doesn’t butt right up to it. Next I click on the Advanced tab in the Picture menu which becomes available in Writer every time you click on a photo or picture, and then I shall enlarge the picture to 350 Width.

Next I am going to give my picture some Contrast so that it really stands out by clicking on Contrast and then adjust the sliders to 20+ for contrast and –5 for brightness followed by clicking on OK. Following that, I will add a watermark to the picture. I click on @Watermark from the Advanced tab. In the topmost box I type in my Watermark ‘Black and White Cat.’ followed by choosing my font Kristen ITC. Hmm. It is hard to see at the moment as by default its positioned at the bottom right hand side of the photo. So by moving it to the top left hand corner I can make my Watermark easier to see.

The other choices in this Advanced tab are Rotate, Crop and Tilt. Let’s try the Tilt one. This feature allows you to tilt your photo either to the left or right in varying degrees. It looks very attractive if you do this when you have a line of photos in your post as well. I will tilt my picture to the left by 5. Note how your text moves over to the side as you tilt your picture if you have text wrap. Next we will try some cropping of our picture and ‘home in’ on the cat’s face.

Cropping can be really useful if you have a photo or picture but it contains background information that you don’t want to include, or perhaps you just want to focus on a particular aspect of that photo. What you probably will notice as you drag the cropping lines around your photo is how the ‘ratio’ of the photo changes. However, you can keep the same ratio of the original by choosing ‘original’ from the drop down box at the top left of the cropping window, or alternatively you can choose your own size from the drop down list if you wish. Note as well that you can always reverse any cropping by simply choosing ‘Remove Crop’ at the bottom.

Next let’s move onto the third tab in the picture menu, the Effects tab. When clicked on it shows an empty box with a green plus sign and a red minus sign. By clicking on the red plus sign, you will be presented with a list of effects to try out on your picture. These are as follows; Black and White, Sepia Tone, Adjust Temperature, Colour Pop, Sharpen,Gaussian Blur and Emboss. Why not try them all out to see what effect suits your picture best? You can always remove any of the effects if you are not happy with any of them by clicking on the minus sign. So that you can see all each of the effects, I am showing my Black and White Cat picture below with each of the different effects applied.

One of the brightest stars to appear on the Hollywood scene in 1929 was a golden knight gripping his mighty sword while standing atop a reel of film with five spokes. His greatest role has been to honor outstanding achievements in filmmaking. His name is Oscar®.

For one of the most recognized trophies the world over, the statuette’s dimensions are not nearly as imposing as the overwhelming emotions experienced by the individuals honored by a nomination or receiving the award itself. Oscar® is a mere 13 ½” and weighing 8 ½ lbs., standing regally atop a base of a film reel. The five spokes displayed on the black base represent the original branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences®: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.

Cedric Gibbons and Dolores del Rio

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s chief art director Cedric Gibbons was responsible for the design of the trophy. Gibbons’ wife, actress Delores del Rio, introduced him to Mexican film director Emilio “El Indio” Fernandez to pose for the original sketches. Sculptor George Stanley, renowned for designing the Muse Fountain at the Hollywood Bowl, sculpted Gibbons’ sketches and Sachin Smith cast the statuette in 92.5% tin and 7.5% copper and then gold-plated it. The only addition to Oscar since its original design was a minor streamlining of the base.

The original award presented at early ceremonies was gold-plated solid bronze. The statuette’s material changed over the years, such as during World War II, when there was a metal shortage, and the Oscars® were made of painted plaster. Once the war was over, wartime recipients were allowed to redeem their plaster figurines for gold-plated metal figures. Today Oscar® is constructed of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base rendered in an Art Deco style.

The Academy® initially named the statuette the Academy Award of Merit®, however Oscar® is what it’s most known for. Many rumors surround how the nickname of Oscar came about. One of the most well known is that of Bette Davis saying that the award resembled her first husband, band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson. Davis supposedly mentioned the term Oscar® when she received her Best Actress award for Dangerous in 1935. Walt Disney was rumored to use the moniker in 1932, and Time magazine made mention of Oscar® in 1934. The Authorized Version from the Academy® is based on a popular story about an Academy® librarian who remarked that the statuette resembled her Uncle Oscar. The Academy® officially adopted the nickname in 1939. However the name came about, it stuck. And many people today often refer to the award ceremony as The Oscars®.

DeMille, were presented on May 16, 1929, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and lasted a mere 15 minutes. This was the only Academy Award® ceremony not to be broadcast either on radio or television. This was also the first and only year that the Academy® recognized two best pictures and the only time that winners were recognized for more than one movie. It was also the only time a silent movie reached best picture status.

Wings, Best Picture winner 1927

Films that had been released between August 1, 1927 and July 31, 1928 were eligible for awards. Unlike later ceremonies, awards could be granted to an actor or director for multiple works within a year. The movie Wings, which starred the popular silent film star Clara Bow, won Best Picture, while Emil Jannings won Best Actor for two separate roles and Janet Gaynor won Best Actress for three separate roles. There were two Best Director Awards, Lewis Milestone won for Best Comedy and Frank Borzage won for Best Dramatic Picture.

Two special awards were also presented that night. One to Warner Brothers for producing The Jazz Singer and one to Charlie Chaplin for writing, acting, directing and producing The Circus.

Yet today, no matter what you call the glam evening of a 1,000 stars or the gleaming knight holding a crusader’s sword, it all represents the best in Motion Picture achievement. Only now The Oscars® come complete with bright lights, designer dresses, and the all-important red carpet.

It may be a little different from what the early founders of the Academy® had in mind; but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

I shall run the way of Your commandments, For You will enlarge my heart. Psalm 119:32 As I read this

I shall run the way of Your commandments, For You will enlarge my heart. Psalm 119:32

As I read this verse, I picture a man running a race, not a morning jog, but running to win. Running with a purpose or goal before him. His fists are clenched. His body drenched in sweat, moving vigorously from side to side. This is the psalmist, running the faithful way of God’s commandments. He continues, “For you will enlarge my heart”.

As a Physical Therapy major, I have studied anatomy and physiology in great detail. It is a fact that as people run, the heart enlarges so that it can work more efficiently. Situations that would knock a normal person off their feet, will not affect this runner. In fact he can run longer and faster.

I don’t know how or if the psalmist knew the physiology of a runner’s heart. But similarly, as we run our race of faith day after day, our hearts also grow with a stronger love and passion for God, so that we may efficiently work for Him. So run! Run through the rain. Run through the mountains and the valleys. Run hard and fast. Put one foot in front of the other. It only training, or daily exercise, to build up your endurance. Running is strenuous and exhausting. But ask any runner and he will tell you it is an exhilarating exertion.

Read five articles on interpolation techniques and you’ll probably get five different recommen

Read five articles on interpolation techniques and you’ll probably get five different recommendations … read the claims from software developers and you’ll find three or four are the ‘very best’. So, despite having ‘up-sized’ hundreds of images you might still be wondering … “have I done this the best possible way?” … “is there a way to get better results?”

Let’s look at the do’s and dont’s and compare the results of the most frequent recommendations, and hopefully put this to bed once and for all (or until the next ‘amazing’ piece of software hits the streets).

Quality
I’m assuming that the objective is a ‘professional’ image (fit for printing in large sizes) rather than something for a screen saver … for instance; Alamy require submissions of 48Mb jpeg files, so if you’re using anything less than an 18 megapixel camera you have to interpolate images – which must then get past Alamy’s pixel-peeping quality control. So, the givens will include that you’re working from a native RAW file, the original is decently sharp and exposed and that there’s a minimum of ‘corrective’ processing required on the image.

Sharpening should always be the last step in the workflow – so interpolate before sharpening. Excessive processing (in sharpening, softening, exposure and noise reduction) can cause ‘banding’ and blocky artifacts to appear after interpolation.

[sample images have no sharpening, in-camera or during processing]

[artifacts caused by any number of 'excessive' adjustments]

8 bit or 16 bit
Pretty much a no-brainer really. You’re after the best quality so start out with the most data in the image. 16 bit images will result in better interpolation.

A=original, 100% crop of colour gradient
B=15% increase of 16bit image
C=15% increase of 8 bit image – showing start of artifacts/blockiness
[within limitations of web image]

Genuine Fractals or Photoshop’s Bicubic
A seemingly never ending debate as is evident on many forums. So let’s look at some results.

A=original colour gradient, 100% crop
B=35% increase using Genuine Fractals
C=35% increase using Photoshop Bicubic Smoother

A=original with sharp detail, 100% crop
B=25% increase using Genuine Fractals
C=25% increase using Photoshop Bicubic Smoother

You might find one is preferable, but nothing in it to get your knickers in a twist.

PS Bicubic Smoother or PS Bicubic Sharper
Some photographers recommend using the Bicubic Sharper option for up-sizing images, suggesting the results are ’sharper’. (Despite that PS describes the two methods as ‘best for enlargement’ and ‘best for reduction’).

A=original, 100% crop
B=25% increase using Photoshop Bicubic Smoother
C=25% increase using Photoshop Bicubic Sharper

Comparing these images, it would appear the Bicubic Sharper option results in a better ‘clarity’ than the Bicubic Smoother method.

Bear in mind however that Bicubic Sharper obviously includes some sharpening of the image (as the name suggests). Obviously therefore, you would want to compare the results of Bicubic Smoother plus sharpening to the results of Bicubic Sharper.

However, as stated earlier, sharpening should be the very last step in the workflow and, if you are supplying the image to a stock agency, sharpening should be left to the buyer – who’s the only one who can decide how much sharpening is required for the printing process to be used.

So, Bicubic Sharper is not recommended for stock images.

One step or Stair interpolation
There was a time when many recommended increasing the size of the image in multiple small steps rather than in a large single step. I have not compared results (as I suspect it may have been necessary because of the capabilities of interpolation software at the time). It now seems to be generally accepted that stair interpolation will not produce better results.

Interpolation and Printing
Finally, in deciding which process to use for interpolation, you must consider the printing method to be used.

Evidently, the use of a stochastic raster (‘fractal’ or ’shape’ – as used in Genuine Fractals, S-Pline, etc) in the interpolation process is fine for inkjet printing and for photographic prints but a disaster for litho printing. So, if your image is destined for print, and you don’t know which print process, the safer option is Bicubic Smoother.

Conclusion
Certainly in terms of images for stock agencies, simply using the Bicubic Smoother in Photoshop for interpolation is as good as it gets … with the added benefit of saving all the cost of 3rd party plug-ins (which is not inconsiderable).

“Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitations; spare not, lengthen thy cords and strengthen thy stakes.” Isaiah 54:2 (KJV)

It’s hard to sing when things are not going well with you, but that’s just what the prophet Isaiah prescribes specifically for those of us that may be going through tough times. He calls for the barren, the ones seemingly producing no fruit; to praise the Lord and prepare to be blessed by enlarging their tents and making room for prosperity to move in.

Many of us lay in wait for God to do something miraculous, giving way to frustration and oppression when nothing seems to be happening. How do we enlarge our tents? What steps do we take to prepare to be blessed when our mindset has been stymied with doubt and unbelief? Lord can you show me somebody this has worked for already? Make it believable for me in my life!

You need look no further than right where you are; the local fellowship, the church where God has placed you. The prophet Isaiah gives several instructions in our selected verse for today. Let’s focus on the instruction number two; “…let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitations…” Who is them? You have to read all the way back to the beginning of chapter fifty-three to find the answer.

“Who hath believed our report, and to whom is the arm (power) of the Lord revealed?”

You must be submitted to your prophet of God in your local fellowship through whom the power of God has been revealed. Then you must decide to let your prophet raise your level of thinking; expanding your mind and taking the limits off God. How big can you imagine? Believe in the Lord and you will be established. Believe his prophet and you will prosper.

“Them” also includes fellow believers through whom the power of the Lord has been revealed. That’s why it’s so important to go to church and fellowship with the saints. God wants us to see people besides “pastor” who have worked the principles; who have been down and God raised them up. We have spent enough time listening to people on the same level (or worse) than we are. How about listening to those who have “been there” and “done that”? I guarantee you this, you’ll never come in contact with “them” at home.

Smilla Enlarger is a free, open source , portable software program for the Windows operating system that can be used to enlarge photos. The results depend on the resolution and quality of the source photo and the resolution increase entered by the user.

Based on original algorithms, this standalone software uses a number of filters that are designed to remove some of the typical artifacts generated by the enlarging process and “fill in” image information to achieve a much higher quality image than image enlargement algorithms typically employed in most applications.

‘Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she’ll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she’ll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she’ll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she’ll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.

Dar ma intreb oare … el face altceva in afara de Twitter , blogging and stuff?

I guess not!

Mother’s Day recently passed and this year we wanted something special for Mom.

I asked my sister to come over my house so we could do a portrait shoot of the two of us so that I could get one blown up into an 11×14 canvas from Canvas on Demand. I set up the tripod with the 50mm lens on the camera, grabbed the remote shutter release, and we headed out to the backyard for our shoot.

This was the final choice for the canvas and I just adore it!

While we were out there snapping away we decided to do some individual portraits for mom as well.

I printed as 8×10’s and she hung them with the canvas in her house.

Our pups were with us in the yard so we had them join us for individual portraits and a group portrait of the 4 of us!
