Por: pastor Daniel Brito

Título: Héroes de la Fe

Texto: Hebreos 11:1-3:

(1)Nosotros no retrocedemos.

1.Nosotros no retrocedemos.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I have had a hard time pulling myself away from staring at my Zecco balance as I watch ENOC cruise. Whilst I am still lamenting my pass on the September $10 Calls (see my Jan 29 post), I am happy as a clam watching my ENOC shares gain almost 60% since buying in at 14 in late March. (I also had a separate batch purchased at 10 and sold at 13, hastily sold thanks to the worried whining of my trading partners G Kanagekko and Katt Masputis.)

The more I look at this company, the more I like it. These latest earnings only served to solidify my excitedness about ENOC, and I am not looking to sell anytime soon. Expenses are moving in the right direction and the raised outlook should raise some buy eyebrows (known as “buybrows” (my word) ) with some big dawgs who are looking to add energy stocks to their portfolio. My only qualm with ENOC is the low volume and the somewhat volatile price moves that it tends produce. (This, of course, isn’t a huge problem as I am in it for the long haul, but it is a bit unsettling to see large price moves based on 200 share lots sold afterhours.)

Stick with your Gut. ENOC to the moon in ‘09.

Itron Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) is supposed to be one of the winners in the stimulus package. The advanced metering company is known as the Smart Grid meter reader to many traders. The company is involved in metering, data collection and utility software solutions for electric, water, and gas utilities, and it claims nearly 8,000 utilities worldwide as its customer base. This is one of the companies deemed to be a winner under the Obama stimulus package. Where this gets interesting is that Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII), Comverge, Inc. (NASDAQ: COMV), EnerNOC Inc. (NASDAQ:ENOC), and Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) are all other smart grid plays and not large caps that have had a rough week in stock prices.

But this week has been a rough week for Itron. Last Friday this closed at $63.17 and it closed out 2008 at $63.74. Shares closed at $58.04 yesterday. Despite the market woes this week, the weakness here at Itron appears to be over worries of a delay in the company’s advanced metering infrastructure deployment. We saw that this was due to software issues as a pact with San Diego Gas & Electric has fallen short of initial hopes in numbers of homes. There are some security concerns in the software from what we have seen and been told, although to what extent is still in the air.

Pacific Crest cut earnings targets for 2009 over the last week and UBS downgraded the stock to Neutral earlier this month. The company is set to report earnings next week on Wednesday, February 18. Based upon what we have seen in many infrastructure support companies, it is no shock that traders have been selling this one ahead of earnings as so many are very cautious on even the “good” and “smart” capital expenditures being pushed down the road from utilities.

Just last week, Itron announced a collaboration with Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII) to enable utilities to remotely monitor and control distribution automation devices utilizing the OpenWay advanced metering infrastructure network by Itron. DGII closed yesterday at $7.96, down from $8.65 last week and from a high this week of $8.89.

Comverge, Inc. (NASDAQ: COMV) is another player that is deemed to be a winner in the smart grid. It is in the field of measuring peak and base load capacity for electric utilities and grid operators under the Smart Grid. Its shares were at $5.57 last week and are trading at $5.25 this morning.

EnerNOC Inc. (NASDAQ:ENOC) provides demand response applications and joins up utilities and end users to work around peak load demand for many large customers. This can include automatically shutting down HVAC units, dimming street lighting and the starting of back up generators to smooth out the disturbance. This stock closed out last week at $12.11, and even with a small gain this morning it is at $11.28.

Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) is up this morning after the announcement that it joined The Demand Response and Smart Grid Coalition (DRSG). Echelon is a pure-play for the grid stocks as it provides both an advanced metering system and networking technology to extend energy management applications into individual devices inside homes and businesses. If it weren’t for a 5% gain because of a “Smart Grid” headline boosting it to $6.70 early on, it would have looked worse here too. This was at $6.99 last Friday.

A lot has changed since we last caught up with Tim Healy, CEO of EnerNOC (s ENOC), the Boston-based company that reduces electricity demand for power grid operators by automating energy conservation.

“Demand response” is a term being heard more and more frequently these days as companies and utilities alike get serious about running electric systems more efficiently. Enernoc’s stock, meanwhile, has been on a rollercoaster, falling to $5.19 last month from its 2007 IPO price of $26, then more than doubling to $11.06 as of Thursday’s close.

CEO Healy this week gave us an overview of the company’s strategy, its outlook for 2009 and the message it’s sending to a new administration as it shapes its energy policy.

How do you explain your work with demand response to a company that is just waking up to the concept?

Demand response is basically a killer app of the smart grid, an application that curtails electricity usage at peak times in order to increase reliability of the electric grid. It brings supply and demand more into balance and hopefully reduces prices overall on the electric system.

We built a network operations center here that runs our software applications. They allow us to automatically curtail customers’ non-essential electricity usage across our network and track and verify that curtailment. The utilities need that curtailment as an alternate form of capacity. They can actually see it happening in real time and pay us for that performance so that we can compensate the commercial, industrial and institutional customers on our network for their participation in the demand response activity.

Can you give some specific examples of how different companies would change their electricity usage?

For example, with the hotels we work with, we can affect things like pool pumps and water fountains and heating pumps that heat up the spa pools. At a manufacturing facility, we can shut a line down and have it go to maintenance mode during a demand response event. At a data center we might run the auxiliary generation in order to not be taking power from the grid, instead generating their own power from their backup generators.

How does a hotel, say, manage this so they don’t hear complaints from their own customers?

We try to make sure we’re not affecting negatively creature comfort at the hotels. So we probably won’t touch the air-conditioning in the hotel rooms and instead focus on dimming some of the lighting in the main lobby and turning off the heating units of the exterior and interior pools, or running auxiliary generation and so forth.

But if you look at grocery stores, we found data that suggesting that when a store goes from full lighting to two-thirds lighting, the customers actually feel like it’s a little bit cooler in there.

The market seemed to like your new agreement with Xcel Energy (S XEL). How will that work?

Xcel has asked us to deliver up to 44 megawatts of demand response capacity initially. So we will be working hand in hand with the account managers and other staff at Xcel. There’s a hardware device that we’ll be installing at the commercial and industrial sites that we work with in Xcel’s territory. These customers are getting basic access to our software systems so that they can track their demand response activity. It helps them manage their performance and see their performance and helps them give some insight into energy consumption.

We’ve also announced a number of wins with state governments and cities, most recently in the city of Boston. And a number of wins with the Department of Defense and three or four other states outside of New England to manage their demand response capacity as well. So it’s been one of the best five or six months in EnerNOC’s history in terms of growth and competitive opportunities and also having a say in what’s going on in Washington right now.

What are the kinds of things you’ve been telling people in Washington?

That demand response is extremely attractive in part because it doesn’t need mandates. It doesn’t need subsidies, it simply needs a regulatory construct that allow for demand response to flourish. So we actually don’t expect that there will be direct subsidies of any specific nature for demand response.

What we do want, however, is for the regulatory constructs to evolve and adapt so that we can have an opportunity for more demand response to play a role in the utilities’ resource planning moving forward. The utilities should be given an opportunity to make more money by investing in energy efficiency rather than investing in any other resource in their portfolio.

That’s something that is a new way of thinking about building our nation’s infrastructure and that hasn’t been the case traditionally. Utilities lose money if they invest too much in energy efficiency under many regulatory constructs that exists across the U.S. today, and we would like to see that change.

I just missed out on $100 (at least).

Allow myself to…explain myself.

I love EnerNOC (ENOC). This company is really doing it. In short, they are PAYING companies (like General Mills) to reduce their energy consumption during periods of peak demand. Their revenue comes from utilities and grid operators (Xcel Energy and Southern California Edison, for example) who rely on them to help meet peak demand; this also cuts down on pricey spot-market energy purchases and the need for more power plants.

Do you know any corporation that would refuse payments just to cut down on their energy consumption? To make this even juicier, ENOC offers their energy management software to clients for FREE. Every corporation and SMB should be lining up to take money from these guys!

Sounds, looks and (most-importantly) feels like a winner to me. (There is clearly a lot more to their business model; this, however, is all the info the Gut Trader needs to make his decision.)

At any rate, the Gut Trader has been watching these guys for some time. They IPO’d at $26/share back in May ‘07, had a tasty run to for a few months, peaked just below $50 at the end of ‘07 and then promptly plummeted to around $10 over the course of Q1 ‘o8 thanks to some higher than expected growth expenditures.

No big deal. They look to have regrouped and stabilized, hitting expectations and picking up some quality customers over the course of ‘08; ENOC has been riding a nice little upswing since the beginning of Q4 and the Gut Trader has been watching. As of today ENOC is trading right around $11.

Here is where the self-screwing occurs:

A few days ago I was eye-balling some ENOC Sept ‘09 $10 call options. They looked good, priced at $1.60. But I got greedy. I told myself to hold off and maybe the price would drop (even though my gut told me that $1.60 was Dirt McGirt cheap for the right to buy ENOC at $10 come September). I passed on the option.

This morning that same Sept ‘09 $10 call was going for $2.60. I could have made a cool hundo in a day. In other words you could have considered me 50.

Alas. Someone else is poppin’ champagne like they won the championship game. If ENOC drops anywhere below $10 again before May, I will be buying up those calls up like Illini buy Senate Seats.

Stick with your gut.

Love always,

I’ll try to keep everyone up on my current positions (when I can afford positions), as well as other nonsense that will only be read by those who know how truly important my commentary is.

One of the reasons I started this blog is because people are always asking me, “Gut Trader, what is you trading philosophy?” As you can imagine, it’s hard for me to put it into words thanks to the fact that I rely mainly on my gut to pick my stocks.

But, James Dalton sums it up quite well in the following clip:

What Dalton Says Goes

Now that we have that out of the way, here are some things you can look forward to:

1) Me losing money

2) Detailed documentation of my losses

3) The detailed rationale behind why I though what lost me money would make me money

Network members like General Mills, Adobe (s ADBE), MIT and General Electric (s GE) don’t do this for free, of course. They receive periodic “capacity payments,” regardless of how much (or how little) their electricity gets dialed back, plus a “curtailment payment” when EnerNOC switches them into conservation mode. By reducing consumption during high-use periods, when electricity rates spike, they can also cut costs.

EnerNOC, which was founded in 2001 and went public last year, has plenty of company when it comes to demand-response technology, or energy information management. It’s part of the larger smart grid technology market, which Lux Research anticipates will reach $4.7 billion by 2013, up from $2.7 billion this year. According to the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, automated demand-response has reduced peak-period demand in California by an average of 10 to 14 percent each year since 2003.

¿Quién come lentejas en vacaciones?

Esto es other way.

EnerNOC delivered first-quarter earnings Wednesday that were a mixed bag. The company beat Wall Street estimates, which is always nice; but its operating loss nearly tripled from the previous year to $11.7 million, which is not so nice. The net loss of 57 cents a share is down from 91 cents a year earlier, which sounds good. But it fell only because the number of shares used to calculate EPS (19 million shares vs. 4 million a year ago) grew faster than that loss.

Investors watching EnerNOC for a while know that there’s a reason for the losses. The company is spending heavily, especially on new employees, to gain a bigger foothold in a growing market opportunity. So while first-quarter revenue grew an impressive 87 percent on year, general and administrative costs (which include network operations workers) grew by 212 percent and R&D costs expanded by 343 percent.

EnerNOC’s business is helping utilities, grid operators and other companies like manufacturers use their existing energy more efficiently. With energy prices rising and blackouts likely to become more common, many companies are realizing energy efficiency is not only smart, but necessary.

But weighing opportunity against the near-term losses that result from aggressive expansion has left the stock volatile. Before its earnings report Wednesday, the stock was down 72 percent so far in 2008, leaving it trading at a cheap-looking 2.5 times its estimated sales for this year.

So after falling 5 percent to $13.69 in active trading Wednesday on what appeared to be low expectations from its earnings report, the stock surged as much as 19 percent to $16.24 in after hours trading on the actual numbers.

That’s still a far cry from the $50 price EnerNOC saw late last year. The company’s promise remains bright, and it expects to be profitable by 2010. But for now the sooner it can grow its revenue faster than its spending, the better investors will feel.

Some good earnings today propelled the market upward for almost a 3% overall gain. Looking at SPY, it bounced off the downtrend line well, confirming it to be at least temporary support. I’ve drawn in falling resistance, parallel to this downtrend support line, and I’ll be looking for SPY to break this channel trend, whether upward or downward. It bounced well off the 50 DMA today, which is another good sign, but yet again, volume was missing. If the market retraces back big within the next few days, we’ll see how good of support the 50 DMA offers; otherwise the next strong support level is that downtrend line. If that line is ever broken on medium to high volume, we’re going back down to January and March lows, and that will be the market bottom. If SPY can break out of that channeling resistance today, particularly if it can finally do so on high volume, the 138.00 resistance level is in sight and can be taken out. Breaking out of the 138.00 level on medium to high volume confirms a bullish trend, and that the market bottomed back in March. It’s earnings season, and as financials start to report their write-offs and losses, prepare for high volatility days. This type of market isn’t very conducive to technical trading, but if you watch overall trends, you should do fine.

I am looking at quite a few stocks to buy in the next few days, if the market doesn’t show too much weakness. One such stock is Diodes (DIOD). It is channeling upwards well, from its March 17 bottom that correlated with the Bear Stearns (BSC) crash. There is heavy accumulation occuring as the price trends upward, and yesterday’s big move up was on high volume. The 50 DMA is starting to point back upward now, and if DIOD can break its channel resistance line on high volume, this would be a great play. I am considering buying right now, before any confirmation. Cut your losses at the 24.00 support level.

BJS Wholesale (BJ) is another great long candidate. It is caught in a rising wedge, and moved upward big yesterday. All it needs is a breakout from resistance on high volume and this stock can rake in big gains. It has to happen soon, as the wedge is almost at a point. My only concern is the lack of volume, and thought volume is one of my biggest indicators of price movement confirmation, the overall lack of volume pervading the market the last few weeks has left me turning a blind eye to a few instances. Also, its 50 DMA crossed its 200 DMA on the bullish side, which is a fantastic signal for break outs coming soon. Cut your losses at the wedge support line.

NX Quanex (NX) has been trading horizontally since its big move up last November. Yesterday, it finally broke that important resistance on high volume, so I’m looking for a nice uptrend for this stock to develop. There is lots of accumulation occurring and the price bounced off of the 50 DMA brilliantly. Cut your losses just under the resistance level it broke.

John Hancock Private Equity Fund (HPI) is caught in a rising wedge and bouncing off of the 50 DMA. Volume is low, but there has been ridiculous accumulation in the last few weeks, and it’s really pushing me to buy this stock. Cut your losses under the 50 DMA.

Taiwan Fund Inc (TWN), my favorite long stock right now, broke out of a wedge pattern yesterday on high volume and closed at its high. It has been forming bases very well and volume is following the trend, an extreme rarity in this market. It is a fund that invests in Chinese and Taiwanese equities, so look for Baidu (BIDU)’s resurgence as a possible fundamental aid to this great technical chart. Cut your losses at the 200 DMA, but don’t worry you won’t have to, CMF is at ridiculous levels around 0.4.

Exide Technologies (XIDE) is channeling upward and moved up on high volume yesterday. Great accumulation occurring and a great base has formed to trend off of for a few weeks. Also broke resistance today. Great play.

Enernoc (ENOC) went up 35% yesterday on very high volume and if it can break through its channel resistance at around 14.00 on high volume, it should be in for even more gains. Accumulation is rising, as well. This is a stock, like a lot of the others I’ve mentioned, that isn’t ready for purchase quite yet, but might be a good play to throw on your watch list.

American Superconductor (AMSC) is trending well in a rising wedge and just had a big up day on strong volume. If it can break out of that resistance, this is a great looking intermediate term stock play. Lack of accumulation troubles me, but price action is most important, so we’ll see if it is able to break out. Its 50 DMA crossed its 200 DMA on the bullish side, which is a great break out signal. Watch this stock for the next couple days.

I’ve been daytrading a lot, and I obviously can’t post those plays, because they’re in and out within 20-30 minutes, but once the market calms down a bit, I should be looking at more intermediate and long term plays. Feel free to ask any questions and dood luck trading.
