You wouldn’t know it to look at me, but I love a good hard rock song as much as the next tat-covered

You wouldn’t know it to look at me, but I love a good hard rock song as much as the next tat-covered metal-head. I have always struggled to control my foul temper and there is something about the pure expression of raw anger in many hard rock songs that I love. I’m pissed off – and so are they!

As you’ll see, many of the songs on this list are by “the usual suspects,” but I have tried to pick songs from these bands that are a little less obvious. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a brilliant hard rock song, but you already knew that, so what’s the point of putting it on my list? OK, then, dear reader, please turn your amplifier up to 11 and let’s kick it…

Nirvana, “Lithium” – These guys changed it all, didn’t they? The hilarious thing is that “Nevermind” knocked off Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” to become the #1 album in America. With all due respect to the King of Pop, Kurt Cobain was dangerous. “Lithium” is classic Nirvana…Slow, then crunchingly fast, then slow, then fast. Toward the end, Cobain screams, “I like it, I’m not gonna crack/I miss you, I’m not gonna crack/I love you, I’m not gonna crack/I kill you, I’m not gonna crack.” Is it any wonder he eventually cracked?

Cracker, “Low” – Whatever happened to these guys? Who cares, they left us with this amazing single, which includes this lyric: “I’ll be with you, girl/Like being low/Hey, hey, hey/It’s like being stoned.” I’ve never been stoned, but I’ve been low, baby.

Smasing Pumpkins, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” – Is there a better voice in rock than Billy Corrigan’s? Not when he sings this lyric: “Despite all my rage/I am still just a rat in a cage.” Yes, Billy. Me, too.

Rage Against the Machine, “Guerilla Radio“ – Yes, yes, I know. I AM the machine. But I can bite the hand that feeds me, can’t I? Actually, this song takes the hand, rips it from the arm, chews it up, and spits it into a gutter. The menacingly whispered, “It has to start somewhere/It has to start sometime/What better place than here/What better time than now,” leads to the repeatedly screamed, “All hell can’t stop us now.” Oh, baby, turn that shit up.

Metallica, “Enter Sandman” – This is the quintessential hard rock song, so I was tempted to pick another Metallica tune until I had the opportunity to attend Game Six of the World Series a few weeks ago. They play this song when Yankee closer Mariano Rivera jogs out from the bullpen to the mound and it was EPIC. 52,000 people banging their heads. Say your prayers, Phillies, you won’t be with us much longer.

Silverchair, “Tomorrow” – I can’t name another Silverchair song, but this one kicks ass, Fatboy. Here’s a lyric that always makes me think of my ex-wife: “You say that money isn’t everything/But I’d like to see you live without it/You think you can keep on going, living like a king,/Ooh babe, but I strongly doubt it.” She actually HAS kept on living like a king, but, oh, well. Maybe tomorrow…

Foo Fighters, “Monkeywrench” – How do you go from being the drummer of Nirvana to the front man of another kick-ass hard rock band? I don’t know, ask Dave Grohl. This song is about being gay (I think), but it really hits on all of the classic hard rock themes – not fitting in, persecution, and just being absolutely ripshit about the whole thing. Take a deep breath and sing along with this lyric: “One last thing before I quit I never wanted any more than I could fit into my head I still remember every single word you said and all the shit that somehow came along with it still there’s one thing that comforts me since I was always caged and now I’m free.” Remember, you need to save up enough air so that you can scream the word “free” for about 20 minutes.

I realize that I am missing several worthy artists: Guns-n-Roses, Pearl Jam, Van Halen, and Def Leppard, to name just a few. But I am out of time, and so are you. Please add your ear-bleeding suggestions to the list.

It has to be their favorite pick. When that bullpen door opens and the first notes of the Metallica

It has to be their favorite pick. When that bullpen door opens and the first notes of the Metallica classic are heard, everything is alright with the world. Yankee fans know that there’s a great certainty that the great closer, Mariano Rivera, will put the opposition to sleep. What could be a more appropriate song to attach to the future Hall-of-Famer?

The former Mets closer Billy Wagner once tried to use “Enter Sandman” as his game entrance, too, to inspire the faithful. It just wasn’t the same. And baseball fans knew it. But you can’t fault him for trying to bottle some of that magic.

Hey, even Lady Gaga likes to use Mariano as an anology when talking about success:

“I get asked, ‘Do you feel pressure? How do you feel when someone says this? Or do you feel like you have to top yourself?’ I say I do feel like I have to top myself. But I feel like I’m Rivera. I’m a closer.”

And when the fans heard the song last night in the 8th inning (as seen and heard above), they knew another game would be closed. They knew another World Championship would be theirs. #27. Since 96, many of those Championships have a great deal to do with Mariano Rivera. The Sandman.

Time to listen to Enter Sandman to celebrate.

Congratulations, New York!

Tapulous, the maker of the popular Tap Tap series of games, confirmed that its new game included a new Arcade and Bluetooth battles modes.

“Tap Tap Revenge fans have been wanting an app from us that rocks and no band embodies rock music better than Metallica,” Tim O’Brien, head of business development at Tapulous, said. “The Tap Tap Revenge: Metallica App really captures the head-thrashing metal of James, Lars, Kirk and Robert and is our most amped up game to date.” When asked for a quote about the Tap Tap Revenge: Metallica app, the band’s Lars Ulrich turned it over to his eleven-year-old son, Myles, who stated, “You haven’t lived ‘till you’ve played this!”

As playable tracks Metallica Revenge includes Enter Sandman, Sad But True, King Nothing, All Nightmare Long, Some Kind of Monster, Master of Puppets, Seek & Destroy, Fuel, One, and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Designed with Metallica fans in mind, Tap Tap Revenge: Metallica features a unique, live-action theme, Metallica news feeds, challenge updates and a public battle message board.

Tapulous has also announced a contest for Metallica fans who want to make it to the sold-out Las Vegas stop of their “World Magnetic Tour.” The grand prize consists of: two tickets, airfare, ground transportation, “and an opportunity to meet the band,” Tapulous says, while everyone who purchases the Tap Tap Revenge: Metallica App is automatically entered in the contest.

September started with us moving into a three bedroom rancher and it is so nice to be in a spacious home instead of a cramped box. Halloween is this weekend so we get to hand out candy to the little trick or treaters. And after a little summer break in the music department, I did a cover of Metallica’s Enter Sandman just in time for this festive pumpkin season.

When I first got into good music (ie anything but pop/radio crap), Metallica was the first band I was turned on to. This was in 1988 and their album …And Justice For All had just come out. Combined with 1985’s Master of Puppets, we listened to Metallica more than any other band, later being turned on to Ride the Lightning and Kill em All. In 1991, their self-titled (or Black) album was released, and this seemed to have a splitting effect on their fans. Folks like me who were expecting the longer, more-complex songs of three years before were somewhat disappointed with Metallica’s ‘new direction’. They seemed to me to have given into superstardom and had decided to take the easy way – James’s ’singing’ lacked it’s raw energy and now included plenty of ‘yeahs’. Overall, especially compared to the vast array of easy, uninspired, common, formulaic music out there in the mainstream, Metallica’s worst albums are still pretty great.

I didn’t pay much attention to Metallica after 1991. I heard a couple of songs on the radio from their future albums, and can even recognize a couple as listenable. Metallica’s 2003 album St. Anger was especially disappointing with Lars’s distinctly terrible snare sound; it literally sounds like a mistake – for the entire album. Jason Newsted left and did that ridiculous show Rock Star Supernova (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Star_Supernova) (which I didn’t watch), but was replaced by ex-Suicidal Tendencies bassist Robert Trujillo in 2003.

When Death Magnetic was released in 2008, I didn’t pay much attention, but within a month or two more than one of my buddies mentioned that it was actually pretty damn good. Further, after making something of a bad name for themselves years back with the whole ‘music downloading’ thing, it was amazing that Metallica made the entire album streamable from the web site. Lars ‘fixed’ his snare sound, and as a whole the album seemed a lot more like what they’d gotten away from so many years ago. The songs were longer (in fact, only three of the ten tracks are less than 7 minutes, with none shorter than five), more intricate, and many have long, varying jam-like bridges or outros that simply rock!

I haven’t seen Metallica before, but in my eyes their new album had redeemed them, so when the World Magnetic tour tickets went on sale in my area I decided I was going. Tickets were about $80 but we ended up with pretty good seats. October 1, 2009 came and we drove to the Bank Atlantic center in Sunrise (Florida). Another $20 to park (what a racket!), but we got there early enough to enjoy a few beers in the parking lot before heading to the door. We’d already missed the first opening band (Gojira) and heard the lines to get into the arena were massive due to ‘heightened security’. After about a half hour of waiting, the security included emptying pockets, removing belts, and walking though a metal detector. By that time we’d missed the second opener too (Lamb of God), but we didn’t mind.

Metallica started around 9pm and proceeded to rock a host of new songs from Death Magnetic, as well as plenty of older tunes for over two hours. They played from a stage in the center and used microphones all around to keep mobile and play to the entire audience. The sounds was great and they put on one hell of a show. I got to hear lots of my older favorites including One, Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Damage Inc, and my all-time favorite (which I later read they hadn’t played in the US since 1997), Shortest Straw.

I’d taken a look at a wiki-like site that sports the set lists from shows so I had an idea of how their stuff would go – there were some consistent songs and some they’d mix up from show to show. They seemed to always do at least one cover as their first ‘encore’ song which I looked forward to. Sadly though, they chose for Fort Lauder the song Killing Time by Sweet Savage which has been one of my less-favorite Metallica covers – oh well. Overall they play 18 songs, which you can check out. We bailed during the last part of the last song which let us get to the car and get out of the parking lot before it became a madhouse. All in all, Metallica put on a great show and if you’re even remotely a fan, either old or new, I’d recommend seeing them.

I walked into the kitchen at one point this morning to find Jackson sitting in his high chair where I had left him snacking on Cheerios and our 4 year old, Bekah, standing in front of him, her face contorted with passion, singing with all her might into an imaginary microphone.

What was she singing, you ask? See if these words ring a bell:

Exit light / Enter Night
Take my hand / We’re off to never never land

Seriously, our sweet 4 year old daughter was singing Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” How cool is that?

Ok, it’s game day…time to put up or shut up. I know this is a little late coming, but here’s what I think they keys to tonight’s game will be:

Alabama will win the game if:

Julio Jones and Javier Arenas run wild. The Hokie defensive secondary must do their best to contain Jones, and Kam Chancellor will probably shadow him quite a bit. If Jones goes crazy or Arenas breaks some big kick returns, the Hokies will be in trouble.

The defense rattles Tyrod early. If he’s going to show he improved, he’s got to do it early, so if ‘Bama can force an early turnover or a bunch of three-an-outs, they’ll have a big advantage. That’s a very realistic possibility.

They pass protect. Jason Worilds and Cordarrow Thompson will have a big day if the Tide offensive line cannot deal with their pass rush. Worilds is an elite talent and will have a big day if he rattles new starter Greg McElroy early.

Virginia Tech will win the game if:

Tyrod Taylor can use his legs and arm to free up the run for the Williams/Wilson/Oglesby trio. If the passing game is nonexistent, the Hokies have no prayer of trying to run on Alabama. Their defensive talent is too good to allow any yards up the middle if the Hokies can’t pass.

They can make a big defensive/special teams play and capitalize. Field position will be huge in this one, and a block or turnover could make the difference. A short field is our offense’s best friend. We’re perfectly capable of making that happen.

Kam Chancellor has a monster game. He needs to have another Orange Bowl-type performance (at least) for the Hokies to try and keep the Tide passing attack grounded.

I’m not a man of religion, just to tell you beforehand. We just need a hell lot of luck – and why not leave it up to luck to grant us luck? (God, that was confusing)

Y’know what my luck is like? (And probably Joe’s, also)

The song: “Summer Day” by Coconut Records.

Lyrics? :

If it’s a summer day
With not a cloud in sight
Then tell me why
It feels like it might
Rain on me
Rain on me

If it’s a summer day
it’s a summer day
With not a cloud in sight
not a cloud in sight
Then tell me why
tell me why
It feels like it might
feels like it might
Rain on me
Rain on me

Boo ba buh buh buh
Shoo sha shoo sha why
Shoo sha shoo shy why
Krispy koo coo quo
Krispy koo coo quo
Oh mah goshona way
Oh mah goshona way

Rain on me
Rain on me
Rain on me
Rain on me

If it’s a summer day
With not a cloud in sight
Then tell me why
It feels like it might
Rain

So say, why the hell does it still rain on me? Taken from the song “If I were a Rich Man”, from the play “Fiddler on the Roof” – (You might reconize it. The song was slaughtered as a mainstream remake called “Rich Girl”)

Lord who made the lion and the lamb,
You decreed I should be what I am.
Would it spoil some vast eternal plan?!
If I were a wealthy man.

What the hell, man. Be a homey! “You know how the Dogg roll..” Would it really spoil some vast eternal plan to toss some luck my way? Now, I understand that this is truly an unreasonable demand, but I’m human, and I’m greedy. Perseverance alone cannot help my endeavors succeed. I need some luck, bro! I know only what I have. Now gime more. Here’s my prayer:

Now I cast aside desires to cede,
I pray the Lord to sate my greed;
Should I die before I prevail,
I pray the Lord my body and soul to hale.

I know, blasphemy, right?

I’m beginning to quote more and write less.

Sorry to everyone that reads my blogs/news posts, last week was pure madness. As some of you may or may not know I’m a big rock/metal music fan so when my girlfriend won us 2 tickets to the very first Sonisphere festival we were over the moon with joy. So im sorry to everyone and I will be posting as normal in the next few days.

Sonisphere Festival 2009

SONISPHERE 2009 REVIEW ~ Knebworth 1st – 2nd August 2009

ARRIVAL – Friday 31st July 2009 – 18:30ish

This is the 3rd festival ive been to in the last 14 months (Download Festival 2008, Download Festival 2009 and Sonisphere 2009) and it didnt disappoint. We arrived on Friday evening by National Express and after a short wait for my friend (who had forgot her ticket and had to commute from London) we finally got the camp set up around 9ish before we scouted out the site. For anyone that has ever been to a Download Festival you will recognise the atmosphere as its pretty similar … 20k+ campers all metal heads just drinking and having fun, no problems just harmless ‘free hugs’, high spirits and ‘Spartans what is your profession’ shouts.

The arena was at most a 10 minute stroll from our campsite (we were the furthest from the arena, closest to entrance) and was opening 24hours a day. Food was around about 50p cheaper than Download Festival but had about the same stands and shops including Monster, Comfy Campers, Hog Roast, Fun Fair, Legal Highs, Guitar Hero : Metallica and of course Domino’s. The stages were viewable at all times but guarded by security during the evenings. In total there was 4 stages with a range from the truly global mega stars to the minnows on the Jagermeister Stage. Bohemia doubled up in the evenings as entertainment with comedy and silent discos, while the 2nd stage turned into the cinema. All in all a nice layout with a wide range of shops and food.

SATURDAY – 1st August 2009 – Alien Ant Farm, Skindred, Bjorn Again (Played Enter Sandman), Bullet for My Valentine, Linkin Park with Dead By Sunrise

After dragging ourselves out of our tents we ventured in to see Alien Ant Farm. Its great to see them re-emerge from the slumber they have been in since the front man disappeared for a side project. AAF had the crowd moving and although it was weird to see the lead man with long hair it was great to see the crowd reaction as they ended with a completely unannounced Smooth Criminal without the expected 10mins of Michael Jackson epitaph. As always Skindred whipped the crowd into a frenzy with fist pumping songs like Trouble, Pressure and finally ending to nothing short of a standing ovation with Nobody… for a band that was performing to less than 100 in Leeds last year at All Hallows Eve its amazing to see Benji rock and animate the thousands in attendance, definitely a highlight to my weekend.

Linkin Park - Sonisphere 2009

Out of pure curiosity we took our place in the crowd for Bjorn Again who before they settled on to the Saturn Stage made sure that we all knew that ‘Metallica invited us to play’ before blasting out classics like Waterloo, Dancing Queen and … Enter Sandman by Metallica as a thank you for the invitation. The crowd all wiggled and finger waggled to the secret pleasure of the ABBA tribute act and everyone seemed to have a good time, including my friend who I’ve always seen as a hardcore metal head. Sadly we missed Bullet for My Valentine as we jostled for position in the crowds waiting on Linkin Park who started with Session with liberal sprinklings of hits like Lying From You, What Ive Done, Somewhere I Belong and Bleed It Out and then … Linkin park left the stage only 1 hour into the set …. ??? and Chester arrived with Dead By Sunrise. This being Chester’s side project it was not accepted readily by the most festival onlookers as they felt this was more abuse of power than ’special guests’. Chester and co played us a ’sample of their debut album’ finally leaving the stage to a less than warm spattering of claps followed by a 10 minute gap of pitch black and bewildered LP fans demanding more of the headline act they had paid to see. Finally they graced us with their presence and ended with New Divide, Faint, and One Step Closer at exactly 1h45mins of a 1h45min time slot including their 10min delayed ‘encore’ and 25min meander into a band people didn’t really warm to. Slightly disappointed.

Saturday Summary - Skindred amazing crowd reaction, Bjorn Again the guilty pleasure and Linkin Park should have stuck to performing as billed and not trying to shill a side act for 25mins.

SUNDAY – 1st August 2009 – Buckcherry, Special Guests – Machine Head, Limp Bizkit, Nine Inch Nails, Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica.

It was an early start for us as Buckcherry opened Apollo Stage. This was only the second time I had stumbled across this Aerosmith/Guns and Roses-esk band with the attitude turned up to 11. Another gem hidden in the under card as they banged out fist pumping, foot stomping rock songs that invigorated the early afternoon crowd. This is a band i will be keeping my eyes on in the coming years as they truly have some catchy songs like Next To You and Crazy Bitch. After a bit of shopping, food and snoozing we made our way to the main stage (Apollo) to see the ‘Special Guests’ – Machine Head. There were many rumours of a secret Slipknot set or even Stone Sour but after long lengthy ego stroking Machine Head finally agreed to play the festival they had agreed to do before Limp Bizkit was moved above them in the bill. I must admit im not a Machine Head fan and I doubt I could name a song without the help of set-lists but the crowd, after some initial heckling, did fully welcome the ‘returning heros’.

In a replay from this years Download Festival I lined up to see Limp Bizkit. I have to once gain throw up my hands and admit I was wrong, I was expecting Fred Durst and co to pull the exact same set from earlier in the year but they did mix it up a bit. Fred also graced the stage wearing a … shock horror … BLACK baseball cap, and had fans eating out of their hands with hits such as Break Stuff, My Generation and Take A Look Around. I do feel they perform better in front of larger audience and therefore there was more energy at Download Festival. Nine Inch Nails supposedly playing their very last UK date was another band that I didn’t know much about but the somber calming mood swept over a waiting crowd with them ending on a soul touching version of Hurt, I am honoured to have seen NIN live before they choose to fade into the black.

Metallica - Sonisphere 2009

Once again I had to sacrifice a band to make sure I have a decent view of the headliner and this time it was Avenged Sevenfold. The crowds were treated to pure live genius with Gunslinger, Critical Acclaim and Bat Country. I have promised myself that next time they are on a festival bill I will give them the time they truly deserve. Finally with the sunset and the tension rising the legends of Metallica arrived with a blend of pyros, fireworks, flashing lights and iconic songs. Opening with Blackened the loyal Metallica fans erupted into almost primal roar as the band was able to show why they deserve such a high pedestal to perch on. A full 2 hour set and proper encore with no side acts or special guests showed Linkin Park how you should headline a festival leaving fans beging for more and more. The rock metal messiahs stacked the set-list with classic after classic … Fuel, One, Nothing Else Matters, Master Of Puppets, Cyanide, Enter Sandman, a tribute to Queen with Stone Cold Crazy and ending on Seek & Destroy. With flames almost as high as the stage, fireworks and an impressive light display Metallica signed off Sonisphere 2009 in style.

Sunday Summary – Buckcherry a real find, Machine Head proof that ego > money, Limp Bizkit slightly limp without a red hat, NIN an honour to see, Avenged Sevenfold sorely missed and Metallica cement themselves has high paid festival icons.

Sonisphere Summary – A very good festival in the making, its taken Download Festival years to establish itself with a cult following … Sonisphere might just beat that record. Sonisphere 2009 had many things right and a handful of mistakes but the experience of the previous Download guru Stuart Galbraith has definitely started the Sonisphere Festival on a firm foundation, but Download (for now) is still the benchmark to beat.

Posted: 01 July 2009 in Bleacher Report

-=-=-=-

Brian Bruney was sent to replace Phil Hughes in the eight inning on Tuesday night game against the Seattle Mariners. This had also caused the Yankees fans to send comments and criticism about the decision.

No one knows the real reason manager Joe Girardi did so. He may have given the media answers to their questions about the eight inning decision, but I doubt he gave them his real reason, which I understand. There are people who will give you something acceptable or reasonable, but it doesn’t mean it’s the real reason.

People can only guess. And my guess is Joe Girardi wants to give the Yankees’ pitchers the chance to throw balls. It’s good, actually, because the pitchers can check themselves if they’re doing well and if they can face hitters with good results for their team.

It sounds like a trial and error because it is a trial and error, in a way. It’s good if the pitcher is able to yield positive results. If he’s just average or (still) below average, then he’ll be able to work on his weakness. The problem with this is if the result is negative, like what happened during Brian Bruney’s pitching. He gave up an intentional walk and two runs.

The Mariners then tied with the Bronx Bombers, 5-5. Good thing pinch runner Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher, and Melky Cabrera scored, respectively, in the bottom of the eight and the Yankees were back in the lead.

With the Sandman pitching in the ninth inning, the game was finally closed. The Yankees won against the Mariners, 8-5.

I don’t like to overrate people, especially those on my favorite team, so I hope this one about Mariano Rivera is not an exaggeration, but Saving Mo has once again come to the rescue.

Whatever mentality Joe Girardi has is not my primary concern. It’s his call, not mine nor anyone’s, for the Yankees. But as a fan, I hope he will always help the Bronx Bombers win their games.

I’m not a whiner, and I am keeping the faith. I think I should play Keep the Faith by Bon Jovi, or by Michael Jackson. I prefer Bon Jovi’s.

So, the theme mixes continue and I realize I really enjoy the challenge of piecing these together. The hidden theme on this one is father’s day. Well, of course, because that’s when I’m making it and for my pa. Follow the track letters down and it spells a surprise! These are all songs my dad really enjoys. We were listening to a much longer mix and pieced this together from that from his reactions and things he and I grew up listening to together. We have fond memories going to one of our first concerts together (Metallica, ACDC), some of our earliest shared listening (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden), recording me playing drums in the basement (Rush, Dream Theatre) and even a Father’s Day concert past (Black Sabbath). Great memories and hopefully a mix he truly appreciates too.

We came, we saw. We danced. It was a good night. Maddie’s post below covers most of the happenings; her next post will cover the post-performance discussion with ABBA Mania’s creator.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you: Bjorn Again, a group dedicated to covering the works of other pop stars in the sultry harmonic stylings of ABBA.
Click and be amazed:

A Little Respect
