Bun had this again — or something like it, anyway. Her throat was covered in sores.

This type of virus is an enterovirus. Know what that means? Means it lives on poop.

Now I know that Bun puts a lot of stuff in her mouth, but I didn’t think much of it was covered in poop.

I suspect the joint baths will have to come to an end. See, Bun drinks any type and form of liquid she can get to her mouth, including bath water.

And Monkey, as a fairly new potty user and as a 3-year-old, isn’t the best at wiping the hind parts. I try to help her out, but — as per the age — she is pretty insistent at “doing it by myself”.

So, yeah, my evenings just got even more difficult! But it will be worth it if Bun never, ever gets another virus with throat ulcers.

*******************

Bun said Monkey’s name, finally. I just about melted from the adorableness.

*******************

Remember my brilliant solution to getting Monkey to sleep in her own bed?

It worked for less than two weeks, peeps. She’s back in my bed.

I need a Plan… D or E. I forget what I’m on.

********************

And because of how sick she was, Bun had the binky all the time for about five days. So now I’m re-weaning her off of daytime use. It sucks. If that girl sees a binky, she is miserable. Sigh.

Onward and upward I suppose. Although I’m not sure what that means in this context!

Hosted and organised by ME Research UK, and co-sponsored by the Irish ME Trust, the New Horizons 2008: International Conference on ME/CFS Biomedical Research took place on 6th May 2008 at the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre on the Genome Campus at Hinxton near Cambridge, UK, an outstanding custom-designed venue designed to attract the world’s leading scientists to debate issues at the forefront of new scientific discovery.

Read a summary of the day’s proceedings at this page.

[Dr Baron Hyde's] talk began by outlining myalgic encephalomyelitis which he described not as a syndrome but a disease process causing a diffuse measurable pathophysiological injury of the brain (CNS). He showed SPECT scans from his practice, and observed that they showed evidence of brain injuries. As regards the question of the triggers or causes of ME, he discussed epidemics, particularly the 1984–1992 Ontario ME epidemic period during which enterovirus seemed to have an important role, concluding that it would be scientifically inexcusable not to consider that the enterovirus group was responsible for the diffuse brain damage noted in acute onset ME patients. As regards ME patients across the board, Dr Hyde’s view is that the cause of the illness could be anything (virus, immunisation, physical trauma) that can cause a chronic diffuse injury of the CNS, hence the need for brain SPECT and brain PET imaging in evaluation.

Late last week, China revealed that their hospitals had been battling an internal virus similar to hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) since early March.

Enterovirus (EV71) causes a severe form of hand, foot and mouth disease with symptoms including fever, mouth sores and rashes with blisters. It is easily spread by sneezing or coughing. The viruses mainly strike children ages 10 and younger.

Some cases can lead to fatal swelling of the brain.

EV71 is not related to foot and mouth disease, which afflicts livestock.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment, but most children affected by mild forms of the disease typically recover quickly without problems.

Today it is being reported that more than 11,900 cases have been reported, with at least 24 deaths in the central province of Anhui and Guangdong province.Of the children that had been reported infected, all were below the age of 6 and the majority were under the age of 2.

The World Health Organization says the virus normally peaks in June and July so there could still be an increase in infections as the weather warms.

WHO’s China representative, Hans Troedsson, said the disease was not a threat to the Beijing Olympics because the disease mostly sickens young children.

China’s Health Ministry has sent teams to Anhui to coordinate treatment of the disease and prevent its spread.

Sairastuneita on kymmenisen tuhatta.

Kaikki on siis oikein hyvin, ehkäpä erittäin hyvin. Kiinan terveysministeriö on tosin hälytystilassa, mutta Kiinan terveysministeriö onkin tottunut olemaan hälytystilassa. Erityistoimena terveysministeriö on lähettänyt taudin lähtösijoille Anhuihin oikein valtuuskunnan selvittämään tilannetta. Entiseen jos on uskominen, valtuuskunta on ns. viisivuotissuunnitelmavaltuuskunta, jonka loppukommunikeaa voimme odotella ensi vuosikymmenen puolivälin tienoilla.

Pääministeri Vanhanen on pidättäytynyt boikotoimasta olympialaisia millään tavalla.
