Bio:
Who is this Jani anyhow? Where has she been hiding? Well, actually it is Jani (jay-nee) Jakovac (jack-o-vack) but who she is can be as tricky as the name. Because she is many things. She is a singer, songwriter, pianist, actor and an athlete to name a few. She’s funny, she’s intense, she’s energetic, she’s controlled, she’s sweet, but don’t ever get on her bad side…not so sweet. She is chic while she owns 6 pairs of slippers and wears flannels to bed. Clearly, she is a Gemini with issues.
          She studied drama and played varsity volleyball at the University of Guelph in Ontario. The day after graduating, she moved to Vancouver to pursue an acting career. This led her to few acting roles and many bartending jobs. She then moved to Europe to benefit from something else she had put many years into…. volleyball. She played and coached professionally in Denmark for three years.
          So, that was where she’s been “hiding”. If hiding was her intent, this would be about the only place this 6 foot blonde could have remained inconspicuous. But inconspicuous she definitely was not when she was hopping up on stages in Copenhagen and joining bands in impromptu performances.
          Growing up in a house that thrived on music, it was always a part of her, a necessary element of her being. She knew she could sing, but strangely enough, she did not think it was “a big deal”. And since the only people that had ever heard her sing were friends and family, Jani assumed that they were merely being polite when they told her that she had talent. Belting out the blues or luring people into a trance with her sultry sounds was just her own act of passion. But the response to her music made it undeniably clear that people wanted to hear more. The music she writes is a soulful mix of the different styles she grew up listening to. The diverse music she appreciated were just a turn of the radio dial away from one another. The stations were numerous. The stations were from Detroit.

What's Goin On

It’s been a busy few weeks. I am trying to get disciplined with this whole blog thing. So regardless of how spent I feel tonight, I thought I should get some words down to expose what’s been goin on.

I have been dealing with all creative fronts for the last few weeks. In the commercial scoring scene I have gone after a few commercials. They are not unlike cattle calls where a production house sends out a spot to various composers and you’ve got about a day to throw something at it. I used to snub my nose at spec work but now have adopted a new perspective. Even though you are essentially working for nothing there is a good upside. I feel that by trying scoring on some new picture I will just be further developing my composing chops. Also commercials are like small films but packed into 30 seconds. It’s amazing how much creative time you can put into 30 seconds of music. And if I do not get the gig I simply have another track to add to my library, which I hope to eventually sell online. And if I am lucky and do get the gig then I get paid! Which is what it’s about right. That’s when the business part connects to the music part and you feel like a pro! So my shots at a Walmart and Tim Horten’s commercial did not pan out. Even though with my rather biased opinion I thought my tracks were quite excellent. I will try and figure out how to post the tracks and expose them to critical audiences globally. Here is my shot at the Tim Horten Spot. It is kind of hard to get it without the visuals. Tim Horten Spot – Yohands I wanted African overtones in the score. In the final moment I have the theme played with piano and get a little more aggressive with the rhythm to reflect the new land in which they have arrived. I find it interesting to see what one can do in a short time. For me time constraints can be a good thing to put on the creative flow otherwise you can mess around with it forever!

In the meantime I am still working on a series titled Pitchin In” which is a cooking show. And today I began work on a series titled “Princess”. No it’s not a Walt Disney movie but rather a series about young women who spend beyond their means. THe producer Jennifer Horvath thinks “Pussy Cat Dolls” is a good musical influence for the show. So I listened to “when I grow up” to get inspired. I think instead I got visually stimulated vs musically stimulated. I am sending in the first draft tonight but I will also post it here. On the voice over scene I have been auditions to a site titled www.voice123.com. I think this could prove to be very cool. Set up a USB mic in the studio (audio -techinica 2020) and seem to be getting a good sound. Who knows, maybe one day this will become more lucrative then scoring!

Also finally starting to get some performing gigs. The recession really did take a monster bite out of that scene. Looking forward to playing again, especially as a trio. Have been practicing every morning to keep the chops up. But nothing is better than a live gig.

So that is a wrap for today.

I am eating my second round of apple pie. I woke up this morning and did not think |I would be eating apple pie today, let alone on two different occasions. Not sure if I mentioned this before but part of my diverse income stream comes from voice overs. My good friend Elly Ray got me into doing voice overs. Many people have said that I should do voice overs but until this year I never really got it together to make it happen. Elly helped me out with a demo and I am very fortunate to be represented by Edna Talent Management.

Damit löse man das Versprechen aus dem Vorjahr ein, Heesters die Auszeichnung nun jedes Jahr zu verleihen, sagte “Bunte”- Chefredakteurin Patricia Riekel in Potsdam. Sie ist die Gesamtverantwortliche für die “Bambi”-Gala mit 800 Gästen am Donnerstag in der brandenburgischen Landeshauptstadt.

Der frühere Bundeskanzler Helmut Kohl (CDU) soll mit einem “Millennium-Bambi” geehrt werden, weil er eine “große historische Persönlichkeit” sei, erklärte Riekel. Ohne ihn hätte es die Öffnung der Grenzen nicht
gegeben.

Wow! Helmut Kohl erhält einen Millennium-Bambi, also den Jahrtausend-Preis für… ja, für was eigentlich? Ach ja, weil es ohne ihn nicht die Öffnung der Mauer gegeben hat. Häh? Hab ich irgendetwas verpasst? Als Kanzler der Einheit lasse ich ihn ja noch durchgehen, aber für den Fall der Mauer kann man ihn wirklich nicht verantwortlich machen. Davon war er genauso überrascht wie alle anderen auch, denn das war nun wirklich nicht geplant. Desweiteren überrascht es mich auch, das ein potentieller Verbrecher diesen Preis erhalten soll. Im Januar 2000 hatte die Staatsanwaltschaft Bonn Ermittlungen gegen Kohl wegen Verdachts der Untreue (so genannte CDU-Spendenaffäre) aufgenommen.

[...] Am 3. März 2001 stimmt das Landgericht Bonn der Einstellung des Ermittlungsverfahrens gegen Kohl zu; Kohl muss aber eine Geldbuße von 300.000 DM zahlen. Das Gericht begründete diese Zustimmung u. a. mit den Worten „weil die Rechtslage unklar ist und selbst im Falle einer Anklageerhebung und eventueller Verurteilung bei Würdigung aller Umstände von Tat und Täterpersönlichkeit aller Voraussicht nach nur eine Geldstrafe in Betracht käme, welche die in Erwägung gezogene freiwillige Zahlung nicht überschreiten würde“ und dem mangelnde Interesse des Geschädigten selbst (der CDU) an einer weiteren Verfolgung des Falles. Zu den mildernden Umständen rechnete das Gericht Kohls politisches „Engagement“ und seine „Verdienste“ und dass die Tat „nicht der persönlichen Bereicherung diente“. Ebenso müssten die „persönlich herabwürdigenden Angriffe in der Medienberichterstattung mildernd berücksichtigt werden“.

Als weiteren mildernden Umstand hob das Gericht den „Täter-Opfer-Ausgleich“ hervor, „nachdem der Beschuldigte im Rahmen einer legalen Spendensammelaktion den der CDU entstandenen finanziellen Nachteil, soweit er von ihm zu verantworten ist, bei weitem wiedergutgemacht hat“. Kohl hatte in einer neuen Spendensammelaktion 6 Millionen DM von Unternehmern und Prominenten gesammelt und selbst 700.000 DM beigesteuert, um den Schaden für die CDU abzumildern. Unter diesen Spendern sind u. a. Uschi Glas, Heiner Lauterbach, Dieter Thomas Heck, Artur Brauner und Michael Holm. Den größten Betrag spendete Leo Kirch mit einer Million DM. [...] (Wikipedia)

Und ein weiterer Bambi geht an den Nazi-Kollaborateur Heesters. Den Preis bekommt er nun anscheinend jedes Jahr, welches er schafft lebend zu überstehen. Tja, da werden wohl noch einige Preise fällig. Das er sich anbiedernd an die Mächtigen in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus verhielt muss ich nicht mehr erwähnen, oder? He was perhaps one of the great entertainers of modern time. He will also be remembered for his eccentric lifestyle that included sleeping with a chimpanzee, living in a carnival-like atmosphere at Neverland, his fascination with Peter Pan, and his numerous masks and costumes. He also admitted to finding pleasure sleeping with young boys and paying out millions of dollars in settlements

She wasn’t just known for singing the theme song to Goldfinger. Shirley Bassey is just about the only singer to have been asked to sing a theme song for three James Bond movies. I liked this particularly for the last stanza, when she sings, Diamonds are forever, forever, forever. Chills. I do mean chills. I used to turn my radio up when she would come on the wavelength, the days when pop music was still played on AM radio. This girl still has a powerful voice at the age of 72.

Born in Cardiff, Wales from an interracial marriage between an Efik Nigerian seaman and a Yorkshire-born white woman, Bassey identifies as Welsh, the same nationality as Tom Jones. So she was lumped together with the other Brits when they stormed onto the shores of the United States in 1963–The British Invasion, so to speak. She’s been active for over 50 years as a singer. Bassey has been married twice, but the fathers of her two daughters remain unknown. She and her second husband also adopted a grand-nephew. Several years back, though, the body of her youngest daughter Samantha was found in the Avon River, an apparent suicide. Bassey steadfastly refuses to believe that Samantha’s death was self-inflicted.

Shirley Bassey was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire in December 1999. Last week, she released a new album called The Performance. The guest performers include Gary Barlow, K.T. Tunstall, Manic Street Preachers, Pet Shop Boys, John Barry, Kaiser Chiefs, and Don Black.

With the sudden passing of Michael Jackson has come a celebration of gigantic proportions all around the world. Michael wasn’t just a celebrity. He was a mega star and legend even while he was alive. He was also a great example for other people to aspire to, including myself.

Although he made Thriller, one of the best-selling albums of all time, he should not just be remembered for the number of records he sold. Like many superstars, he, “Michael Jackson“, had multiple talents and many admirable qualities and achievements.

Not only was he a phenomenal dancer, but he had a unique dancing style and invented his own dance moves. The most famous dance is his moonwalk. Although I did learn the moonwalk, I’ve never been much of a dancer. However, I have no doubt that many people could learn to be great dancers by learning his moves. In fact, one of Britney Spears dance instructors learned dancing by doing just that. This brings me to my first lesson I learned from Michael Jackson.

1. Successful people don’t just achieve success for themselves. They also plant seeds for the success of multiple other people. If it weren’t for Michael Jackson, many others would not have landed where they are, including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and some of Michael’s own relatives, such as Janet Jackson.

2. You don’t have to be the best singer to be a music sensation. You just have to enjoy singing and make songs that touch people’s hearts. Michael did not have an operatic voice, but his voice was enjoyable enough to make people want to hear him sing.

2. It’s very important to create something that is uniquely yours. Michael wrote a lot of his own songs. While there are many people who achieve fame without writing songs, it’s always best to do some of your own song writing. His songs were not necessarily intellectually profound, but they were good enough to pull millions of heart strings. That is the most important goal a song can achieve.

3. Don’t forget to enjoy the simple things in life. I read a story that Michael’s good friends blindfolded him and took him to a supermarket so he could go grocery-shopping. His other friends acted as shoppers who pretended he was just an ordinary shopper like them. Grocery shopping is such a mundane thing for most of us that we can’t imagine someone enjoying something so simple. But there Michael was, giggling like a schoolboy at the prospect of wheeling a cart around, looking for food to buy.

4. No matter what, take care of your body. At this time, we don’t know what caused Michael Jackson’s death. However, it is well-known that in the past he took drugs that were not essential for his health, namely painkillers. On the one hand, Michael was an example of someone who exercised. He couldn’t be a great dancer without being in good shape. The problem is that too many medications can be hurtful to your body and can undo the effects of other healthy behaviors you engage in.

The importance of adequate sleep, exercise and eating well can never be overstated. Prescription medications are sometimes necessary and can save your life, but they should definitely be kept to a minimum.

5. Don’t let people you care about hurt themselves, if you can help it. Do or say something to discourage them. Ultimately, what a person does is their choice, and sometimes you can’t stop them. When you can help, however, you should.

I saw an interview with a medical professional who said that Michael Jackson asked her for a powerful and dangerous drug to help him sleep. It may be that someone eventually gave him what he wanted. That could have resulted in his death. A good friend and provider should not appease someone by allowing them to do harm to themselves.

6. Whatever you do in life, do your best. Michael had a reputation as a consummate professional. This is definitely one of the qualities that led to his success as an entertainer.

7. Even if you come from generations of poverty, you can become successful. Most people never escape the socioeconomic status they are born into. Taylor Swift is one of sweetest, honest, hardworking young woman out there who is very serious about her music. There is a certain humility about her which is endearing. I think the CMA has chosen well awarding her the Country Music Entertainer of the Year title. She has made a mark for herself on the music scene and I can see her evolving into the Dolly Parton and other country music enduring greats of all time. Best of luck in the future Taylor, continue working hard, doing the best you can and maintain your focus on your work rather than on your fame and good things will come your way.

As an addendum, I must say I was surprised that she won over Keith Urban who is a fabulous musician and entertainer. I supposed his little sheningans with drugs etc. did not bone well with the officials. He will survive. Having said that, Taylor is riding on a strong wave of popularity in her own right so she deserves to win.
