Vielä pari sanaa Uusikuu-elokuvasta, ja sitten lopetan tästä aiheesta puhumisen. Ehkä…

Aiemmassa postissani jäi käsittelemättä yksi minua erityisen paljon askarruttanut seikka, nimittäin elokuvan vihaajien äärimmäisen voimakas reaktio elokuvaa kohtaan. Vihaajien joukko on runsas, ja he käyttävät keskustelupalstoilla suunnattomasti aikaa perustellakseen kuinka paska elokuva oli, kuinka Stephenie Meyerin alkuperäisteksti on ala-arvoista kirjallisuutta ja kuinka surkeita kaikki elokuvan näyttelijät, ohjaaja ja koko tuotantotiimi ovat.

En oikein ole ymmärtänyt, mistä tässä vihamielisyydessä on kyse. Käsitän sen, että on ihmisiä, jotka eivät pidä elokuvasta, mutta että vihata nyt kaikkea mikä elokuvaan tai kirjasarjaan liittyy, mennä nyt henkilökohtaisuuksiin näyttelijöiden ja ohjaajan nimittelyssä tai ylipäätään uhrata niin paljon energiaa Twilight-ilmiön inhoamiseen… En itse henkilökohtaisesti perusta toimintaelokuvista ja jos en koskaan enää näe yhtään Vin Diesel -elokuvaa niin en ole pahoillani, mutta en minä silti käytä kaikkea aikaani julistaen maailmalle, kuinka surkeita kyseiset elokuvat ovat. En pidä niistä ja sillä siisti; se riittää minulle. Mutta tämä Twilight-juttu on täysin käsittämätön. Miksi sen kohdalla pelkkä toteamus “elokuva ei ollut minun juttuni” ei riitä? Miksi sitä pitää vihata lähes yhtä intohimoisesti kuin fanit sitä rakastavat?

Entertainment Weekly on kirjoittanut erinomaisen artikkelin Twilight-vihan mahdollisista syistä ja siitä, miksi Uusikuu-elokuvan menestys saattaa itse asiassa olla hyväksi Hollywoodille. Siirtykää syrjään supersankari-kung fu-lättäys-turpaanottoelokuvat, tervetuloa tarinankerronta ja tunnelma! Ehkä tässä sittenkin on kyse valtataistelusta. Ehkä (nuoret) miehet ovat pelästyneet puolikuoliaiksi uuden, romanttisen suuntauksen saadessa jalansijaa Hollywoodissa ja käyvät nyt taistoon omien elokuvagenrejensä puolesta.

The folks at the MPAA must have been snoozing when Ninja Assassin came up for its rating. Because this slick slice of martial-arts mayhem from the producers of The Matrix is awash in blood. It spurts and sprays in geysers. And it never lets up. There’s a brutal (and admittedly very cool) fight scene every five minutes. What story there is revolves around a ninja (Korean pop star Rain) who teams with a sassy Europol agent (Naomie Harris) to get payback on the clan who trained him to be a heartless assassin. But let’s be honest, killing is this film’s business…and business is good. B
WOOHOO!!  A “B” is pretty good according to Entertainment Weekly!

Students will develop biblical/theological, historical, and economic understandings of music, film, TV, radio, periodicals, books, advertising, and the Internet.

SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: In this course students will reassess pop culture’s relevance to their lives, their ministry, and the church’s engagement with mainstream culture.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Pop culture is pervasive and influential. Students successfully completing this course will:

Followers of Jesus have been ”sent into the world” for a reason, and it’s not to hide.

If you really want to influence culture, learn to engage it.

Constantly throwing rocks is the easy way out, and it’s often not very helpful.

“You’re never done,” said Cyndi Stivers, managing editor of EW.com about career trajectories and the importance of staying current.   “Get comfortable with that idea and keep learning. The stuff that comes easily to you may actually be a rare and marketable skill.” Next to her, Jess Cagle, managing editor of Entertainment Weekly (all Time Inc. top editors have this title instead of Editor-in-Chief), nodded in agreement. Both editors had agreed to sit down with NYU’s Master of Science in Publishing students to talk about careers, publishing, and the challenges of entertainment journalism.

Stivers certainly knows what she’s talking about: she began her career during the “hot type” (also known as mechanical typesetting) printing era,  taught her bosses to use computers, and stood at the forefront of the transition to desktop publishing. After launching Time Out New York, she moved to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and helped found Martha’s 24-hour Sirius satellite radio channel. Now, as top web editor of one of the most popular entertainment reporting brands in the business, Stivers is enmeshed in publishing’s current shift to digital media. In other words, she’s seen the industry in transition and had an active role in those changes. “That’s why I’m not freaked out,” she said. Indeed, the current moment is an exciting one for Stivers, Cagle, and the brand they manage.

For Cagle, who has  been a writer, editor, and reporter both in print and on television, “There’s nothing more gratifying than working on a magazine—that tactile thing that you hold. It was always my first love,” he says. His writing start came during his college stint as an intern and fact checker for People. His secret to success? Barging endlessly into the managing editor’s office and asking to write—until he was finally assigned a music review of a group called Run DMC. Cagle’s take on the emerging rap scene impressed his editors, and he eventually landed key writing, reporting, and editing gigs at People, Entertainment Weekly, and Time.

These days, along with Stivers, Cagle presides over a brand that has kept the pulse of the entertainment industry since the magazine’s launch in 1990, when Time Inc. spun off the popular review section of People into a full-fledged magazine of its own. With just over 12 million readers per month (total paid and verified circulation stands at 1,796,560; the pass along rate is more than six readers per copy; and 60% of readers are female), the magazine today boasts unparalleled access to celebrities. The staff of 80 people includes bureaus in both New York and Los Angeles. Entertainment Weekly does not maintain separate editorial staffs for online and print editions, though the debate over which content shall appear online is an ongoing one. Until recently, the website contained everything the print edition did “day and date,” but now the brand caters to its different audiences more precisely. (Indeed, according to Stivers, there is only an 11% overlap between print readers and those who read the site religiously.)

As savvy editors, Stivers and Cagle maximize every opportunity: with a conference room full of opinionated, eager publishing students, naturally the editors decided to turn the tables and conduct an informal mini focus group. “Tell us what covers you like best and worst,” they said, gesturing at the wall of Entertainment Weekly covers.  Perceptive publishing students quickly came to a pretty clear majority: strong single images (David Letterman with his pants dangling around his knees and Robert Downey, Jr. in costume as Sherlock Holmes or Ironman) won out over cluttered preview covers. Excessive digitization (such as the cover of a manipulated-looking Megan Fox) turned students off; iconic, natural closeups like the Patrick Swayze cover intrigued them.

After Cagle and Stivers headed off to their afternoon meetings, editorial assistant Archana Ram gave students a tour of the offices. Books, albums and CDs of films and TV shows were everywhere, waiting to be reviewed.  Archana showed students one staple of a magazine office that never seems to disappear: the mock-up wall. Editors gather each day for “wall meetings,” a tradition of analyzing and perfecting the order and placement of stories and ads. The wall—a space that existed for editors long before Entertainment Weekly’s launch—was our reminder that tactile, print visuals are still a key element of the media world.

Stivers and Cagle have clearly done a great job of refining entertainment journalism and creating a promising synergy between the magazine and website. For all those who disparage the current fate of the magazine world, Stivers has this strong and clear message: “It is still a very vibrant and exciting space to work in.”

I had the great pleasure of seeing Kara Dioguardi (American Idol’s newest judge) at a local university last night. She talked about her career as a songwriter and sang (spectacularly, I might add) some of the songs she’s written for major artists including Christina Aguilera, Pink and Ashley Simpson, to name a few. During the Q and A portion, I asked her to tell us about working on the song Strut with Adam Lambert.

She told us that it was interesting going from “judge” to “co-writer” with Adam, and that he could finally be comfortable with her in that new setting (she described herself as a bit goofy!). She said he was really confident, knows what he wants, and that it was a pleasure to work with someone like that. She also told us that Adam has become a good friend, and that he’s a really nice and genuine person. I really enjoyed watching Kara perform!! If she happens to come to your area please make sure to catch her show- definitely worth it!!!

Now, for an Adam news update: Whiteny Pastorek of Entertainment Weekly recently interviewed Adam and asked about the whole “OUT” affair. Adam had this to say: “I’m not being puppeted around. I didn’t want to jump onto a gay magazine as my first thing, because I feel like that’s putting myself in a box and limiting myself. It was my desire to stay away from talking about certain political and civil rights issues because I’m not a politician. I’m an entertainer. That is not my area of expertise. I can talk about relationships and personal experiences because as an artist those things involve writing lyrics and that part of my process. But I didn’t feel comfortable talking about the March on Washington. I didn’t feel comfortable, so I asked my publicist to ask the interviewer to stay away from the political questions. Meanwhile this week, in addition to releasing his first album, Kris Allen joined Adam Lambert on the red carpet for some arbitrary “best of” event for that bastion of journalism — US Weekly. MTV did an “awkward” interview with Lambert (Glam God of the Year) and Allen (Victor of the Year…come on, they could have thought of a more creative arbitrary title). The reason it was awkward was because Jim Cantiello wasn’t doing it. Obviously.

HBD’s wife, Katy Allen, was also in attendance. I’m sure Kradam-shippers have already had a field day with the red carpet photos. Hmmm…are there Kradamy(?) people, too? Hell, there are all types out there on the interweb, particularly LiveJournal. (Some guy from Glee was also there. Sorry, folks. Not into it.)

Entertainment Weekly recently reviewed The Twilight Saga:  New Moon – what grade did the movie get and do you agree?

The production itself, directed by Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) from a script by Melissa Rosenberg, is fan-ready and saga-solid. Weitz goes for an appealing, slightly old-fashioned look, one in which the near-
constant rain nicely mirrors Bella’s internal weather conditions. (As embodied by Stewart, she’s one pained and stormy chick.) Pattinson looks, to these post-teen eyes, even more to-die-for, with his red lips, amber eyes, and major hair. I wish Jacob, endowed with Lautner’s lithe bod and Matt Damonesque grin, had more of a chance with Bella. But, well, book readers know best what happens next in Eclipse. Everyone else can catch up on screen next year. Guaranteed, it will still be raining in Forks, Wash. B+

It is essential that all of you involved in these God-forsaken “Twilight” books, movies, video games, and stuffed animals understand that when I originally wrote Dracula, I never, ever, had any intention of vampyres being turned into James Dean wannabees who are more suited to play extras on Beverly Hills 90210.

Seriously, I’m so pissed, I’m turning in my grave!  Vampyres should be pallid, grotesque creatures with gnarled hands and twisted, wicked mouths.  You know, like James Carville.

มันเป็นอะไรที่น่าเสียดายเหมือนกันนะครับ สำหรับเรื่องนี้ แต่ยังไงก็คงต้องดูกันต่อไป ว่่าจะมีนักแสดงคนไหนเพิ่มเติมมาอีก โดย ราเชล แม็คอดัมส์ นั้น กำลังจะมีผลงานอันสุดคลาสสิค มาให้เราได้ชมกัน นั่นก็คือ Sherlock Holmes ที่จะลงโรงฉายในบ้านเรา 24 ธันวาคม 2009 นั่้นเองครับ

ยังมีอีกคนหนึ่ง ที่ยังเป็นข่าวลือ และยังไม่มีกาีรออกมายืนยันอย่างแน่ชัด นั่นก็คือ โรโมลา กาไร ที่มีข่าวลือมาว่า เธอก็จะอยู่ใน เรื่อง Spider-Man 4 ด้วย ซึ่งจะเป็นความจริงหรือไม่นั้น ต้องรอการยืนยันมาอีกทีครับ

สำหรับข่าวตัวร้าย Black Cat ว่าจะอยู่ในภาคต่อที่สี่นี้ด้วยนั้น ก็ต้องรอการยืนยันอีกที เช่นเคย หลังจากการยืนยันครั้งที่แล้ว ไม่สามารถทำให้เราเชื่อได้ 100% เพราะข่าวเท็จนั้นก็มีมากมาย แต่อีกไม่นานครับ เราก็จะรู้แน่นอน ปีหน้า!!

Ah jealousy. The root of so much evil in this world. But what happens when the word is thrown around as an insult to a person who is probably not jealous at all? We found a lovely little example of that today thanks to an Entertainment Weekly posting about Miley Cyrus.

Apparently Miley is not a big fan of the Twilight enterprise. Gasp – has the universe imploded? Well of course not. But if you read some of the comments to this EW article, you would think it did. Miley’s Twi-Hate confession starts about 1 minute into the video below:

Cue mean girl comments! Our offending commenter of the day goes by the name of bellaswan4eva. She writes:

Who cares what you think anyway bucktoothed country girl? The hysteria over New Moon is insane and it’s gonna make so much more money than your stupid concert film! Jealous much? Go back to the trailer park from which you came, thanks!

Bella my dear…we get it. You love Twilight! You probably know all the books by heart and have an awesome shrine to Robert Pattinson in your room. You probably also recently hid all of your Miley Cyrus merchandise under your bed – because it’d be upsetting if the Robert shrine was anywhere near that nasty Twilight hater’s stuff! It’s cool we’re not judging you for that or anything. But let’s get real here…Miley Cyrus is an empire. She has more money than any of us could ever dream of, and she has had more professional success at the age of 16 than the vast majority of us could hope to have in a lifetime. So basically, the girl isn’t jealous of Twilight. Yes, the New Moon hysteria is insanely huge – but so is Miley. So stop calling her jealous and start realizing that some people actually do not find the Twilight saga entertaining. This is a case of different strokes for different folks – not jealousy.
