I’m getting back on track even though I’m still sick. Some ups, some downs, but today was productive enough to matter.
I was supposed to help my aunt and uncle move in, but that fell through on their part. Instead I decided to use my time to organize a good amount of books, and I’m now 1/5 of the way done with 325 books or around 1,800 sorted out. My father started working on the religion section as well, but is nowhere near done.
Besides that I tried to get back into living life. I’m trying to get enthusiastic about exercising and cleaning again as I prepare to start writing again hopefully tomorrow.
Here’s the goal for now. It’s Wednesday. I plan to, in a week, have my books organized. I will hopefully be able to take pictures of all of my books by the 1st. I also plan on writing every day starting tomorrow and be able to have a better sleeping schedule.
I also decided that the title would be easier for each blog post in numbers, so there’s that.

Right now I’m supposed to say “I’m heading to bed now. Let’s see what tomorrow will bring!” but I would be lying. Instead I am going to spend way too much time planning out my exercises and read a good amount, heading to bed around 12:30. Tomorrow will be productive, but it will be a late start.
Until then, c’ya!

Disclaimer: I do not own this image!!

I first heard about The American Pavilion Cannes Film Program during my freshman year of college. The program was mentioned by the professor of an “Adaptation” course I was taking (we would read a short story or novel, then watch the movie adaptation of it). Over the years, I’ve thought of applying to the program and this year I finally did.

I really didn’t know my chances of getting into this program. But, as my motto has been for the past year or so, you never know until you apply.

Wednesday (December 19th), I had a phone interview with The American Pavilion. After the phone call, I really wasn’t sure how it went. I just tried my best to answer every question as honestly and enthusiastically as possible. I especially wasn’t sure since my answer for “the most recent film you’ve watched” was the 2009 British dark comedy In The Loop. Furthermore, I was shocked to hear that I would be notified by Friday the same week whether I got in or not!

Well, today is Friday and I received the e-mail… I’ve been accepted into The American Pavilion 2013 Cannes Film Program!!!!!!!!!

The program begins on May 12 and ends of May 27. I have no idea what to expect, but I hope I’m not too star-struck. According to the interviewer, the program is what you make of it, so that means I’m packing all my business cards, postcards, and copies of my screenplays.

After filling out a bunch of forms for The Pavilion, I guess I need to figure out what to pack as well as brush up on some French?

Wish me luck! Or “bonne chance”?

Thank you, author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. (*Please note the emphasis above is mine.)

So I came across this list quite by accident it would seem, although I no longer believe in coincidences. Just yesterday, I was sitting my mentor/life coach and we were devising my vision and context for 2013. As part of that, I had declared that I will be the most positive and enthusiastic person I know. I had, in fact, borrowed those words from a person who had described me as the most positive and enthusiastic person he knows. High praise indeed. If you knew me, you would realise just how big those words mean to me.

This has been the best year of my life. The most transformative year of my life. Statements of fact. Attested by me and those closest to me. I’ve finally become me. The real me. Not obstructed by negative thoughts or perceptions created by me or imposed on me by anyone.

And to my surprise and delight, I like the real me. I found the real me is positive and enthusiastic. Friendly. Funny. Silly. No longer has the Sunday back to work blues. Does not dread Mondays. Can find the courage to ask a cute guy out to coffee (and he said yes). Has gained a few pounds and still fits all her clothing. Finally learned to walk in high heels (and is now accumulating an enviable shoe collection). Is absolutely grateful and content with what she has and still wants more out of life.

I hope, as we approach the end of 2012 and the start of 2013, that all of you will have something to be grateful for, that you can look back on the year and see how far you’ve come on some things and for those things that you haven’t made progress, perhaps you should take a tip or two from the 21 listed above.

Have a great festive season. If you want to start something for yourself, do it NOW. January 1 is not a magical date blessed with extra powers to help you accomplish what you wish to do. The power lies with you and within you. Make sure what you wish for is genuinely important and meaningful to you. Sit with it for a few days. Make the promise to yourself. Then go DO IT. Don’t sit there and overthink it. Step outside and go get it. Make small steps in the right direction. Progress is progress, no matter how small. Record your steps every day so that when you look back, you can see how far you’ve come. That will spur you to continue. Be your own cheerleader. Do it for yourself.

I completely forgot how many bugs go round this time of year, I’ve just recovered from having some stupid 24-48 hour bug which made me miss my favorite event of the year. Our Christmas party, it’s so festive! When everyone close to my family comes over and we drink mulled wine and snack on crisp, it’s literally perfect! Though I can’t moan about what I did instead, I could to spend the evening cuddled up with my boyfriend watching The Holiday, utter bliss, plus it helped take my mind off of how gross I felt which is always a bonus! I can’t put into words how amazing my boyfriend has been this weekend he has literally been by my side through this whole illness and I don’t know how he has done it especially as he hates sick. I was up till around five in the morning on Saturday and he sat up with me as I threw up into a bucket, granted he was covering his ears but he was also rubbing my stomach to stop the pain. I don’t know how I managed to get so lucky as to have someone in my life like him. I don’t think anyone has ever been that kind to me and looked after me as well as he did, especially no one has tried that hard to cheer me up and trust me I am a right grump when I’m ill. It’s times when we are at our lowest when we really noticed who is always there for us and who it is that takes care of us the most. Gotta love my family and boyfriend at times like this!

I’m now tired but not tired, I’ve been asleep loads this weekend due to being ill and have pretty much spent the last two days in bed so now that it’s actually time to sleep I don’t think I can. I also haven’t got my boyfriend here which is odd, he is so good at helping me sleep it now eels impossible. My bed also feels huge all of a sudden now he isn’t here and it just makes me feel lonely. Feeling lonely is one of the worst feelings ever, luckily this is just mild loneliness compared to the deep down “in my gut” loneliness I usually feel. I think it’s more in contrast to the weekend as I’ve had someone by me 24/7 for like two days and now I’m cuddled up in bed on my own, it’s not exactly a great feeling. I really shouldn’t moan though, especially after the lovely, minus the illness, weekend I have. Luckily enough I am well enough in time for college tomorrow, please note the sarcasm there. I really can’t be bothered with it! I’m gonna guess I will have a restful night tonight due to my odd sleeping pattern which means I will be shattered tomorrow meaning I will be even less enthusiastic for college. Wish me luck.

My last post left the story of JRR Tolkein immediately after his writing of his first bestseller; th

My last post left the story of JRR Tolkein immediately after his writing of his first bestseller; the rather charming, lighthearted, almost fairy story of a tale that was The Hobbit. This was a major success, and not just among the ‘children aged between 6 and 12′ demographic identified by young Rayner Unwin; adults lapped up Tolkein’s work too, and his publishers Allen & Unwin were positively rubbing their hands in glee. Naturally, they requested a sequel, a request to which Tolkein’s attitude appears to have been along the lines of ‘challenge accepted’.

Even holding down the rigours of another job, and even accounting for the phenomenal length of his finished product, the writing of a book is a process that takes a few months for a professional writer (Dame Barbara Cartland once released 25 books in the space of a year, but that’s another story), and perhaps a year or two for an amateur like Tolkein. He started writing the book in December 1937, and it was finally published 18 years later in 1955.

This was partly a reflection of the difficulties Tolkein had in publishing his work (more on that later), but this also reflects the measured, meticulous and very serious approach Tolkein took to his writing. He started his story from scratch, each time going in a completely different direction with an entirely different plot, at least three times. His first effort, for instance, was due to chronicle another adventure of his protagonist Bilbo from The Hobbit, making it a direct sequel in both a literal and spiritual sense. However, he then remembered about the ring Bilbo found beneath the mountains, won (or stolen, depending on your point of view) from the creature Gollum, and the strange power it held; not just invisibility, as was Bilbo’s main use for it, but the hypnotic effect it had on Gollum (he even subsequently rewrote that scene for The Hobbit‘s second edition to emphasise that effect). He decided that the strange power of the ring was a more natural direction to follow, and so he wrote about that instead.

Progress was slow. Tolkein went months at a time without working on the book, making only occasional, sporadic yet highly focused bouts of progress. Huge amounts were cross-referenced or borrowed from his earlier writings concerning the mythology, history & background of Middle Earth, Tolkein constantly trying to make his mythic world feel and, in a sense, be as real as possible, but it was mainly due to the influence of his son Christopher, who Tolkein would send chapters to whilst he was away fighting the Second World War in his father’s native South Africa, that the book ever got finished at all. When it eventually did, Tolkein had been working the story of Bilbo’s son Frodo and his adventure to destroy the Ring of Power for over 12 years. His final work was over 1000 pages long, spread across six ‘books’, as well as being laden with appendices to explain & offer background information, and he called it The Lord of The Rings (in reference to his overarching antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron).

A similar story had, incidentally, been attempted once before; Der Ring des Nibelungen is an opera (well, four operas) written by German composer Richard Wagner during the 19th century, traditionally performed over the course of four consecutive nights (yeah, you have to be pretty committed to sit through all of that) and also known as ‘The Ring Cycle’- it’s where ‘Ride of The Valkyries’ comes from. The opera follows the story of a ring, made from the traditionally evil Rhinegold (gold panned from the Rhine river), and the trail of death, chaos and destruction it leaves in its wake between its forging & destruction. Many commentators have pointed out the close similarities between the two, and as a keen follower of Germanic mythology Tolkein certainly knew the story, but Tolkein rubbished any suggestion that he had borrowed from it, saying “Both rings were round, and there the resemblance ceases”. You can probably work out my approximate personal opinion from the title of this post, although I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Even once his epic was finished, the problems weren’t over. Once finished, he quarrelled with Allen & Unwin over his desire to release LOTR in one volume, along with his still-incomplete Silmarillion (that he wasn’t allowed to may explain all the appendices). He then turned to Collins, but they claimed his book was in urgent need of an editor and a license to cut (my words, not theirs, I should add). Many other people have voiced this complaint since, but Tolkein refused and ordered Collins to publish by 1952. This they failed to do, so Tolkein wrote back to Allen & Unwin and eventually agreed to publish his book in three parts; The Fellowship of The Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of The King (a title Tolkein, incidentally, detested because it told you how the book ended).

Still, the book was out now, and the critics… weren’t that enthusiastic. Well, some of them were, certainly, but the book has always had its detractors among the world of literature, and that was most certainly the case during its inception. The New York Times criticised Tolkein’s academic approach, saying he had “formulated a high-minded belief in the importance of his mission as a literary preservationist, which turns out to be death to literature itself”, whilst others claimed it, and its characters in particular, lacked depth. Even Hugo Dyson, one of Tolkein’s close friends and a member of his own literary group, spent public readings of the book lying on a sofa shouting complaints along the lines of “Oh God, not another elf!”. Unlike The Hobbit, which had been a light-hearted children’s story in many ways, The Lord of The Rings was darker & more grown up, dealing with themes of death, power and evil and written in a far more adult style; this could be said to have exposed it to more serious critics and a harder gaze than its predecessor, causing some to be put off by it (a problem that wasn’t helped by the sheer size of the thing).

However, I personally am part of the other crowd, those who have voiced their opinions in nearly 500 five-star reviews on Amazon (although one should never read too much into such figures) and who agree with the likes of CS Lewis, The Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times of the time that “Here is a book that will break your heart”, that it is “among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century” and that “the English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and those who are going to read them”. These are the people who have shown the truth in the review of the New York Herald Tribune: that Tolkein’s masterpiece was and is “destined to outlast our time”.

But… what exactly is it that makes Tolkein’s epic so special, such a fixture; why, even years after its publication as the first genuinely great work of fantasy, it is still widely regarded as the finest work the genre has ever produced? I could probably write an entire book just to try and answer that question (and several people probably have done), but to me it was because Tolkein understood, absolutely perfectly and fundamentally, exactly what he was trying to write. Many modern fantasy novels try to be uber-fantastical, or try to base themselves around an idea or a concept, in some way trying to find their own level of reality on which their world can exist, and they often find themselves in a sort of awkward middle ground, but Tolkein never suffered that problem because he knew that, quite simply, he was writing a myth, and he knew exactly how that was done. Terry Pratchett may have mastered comedic fantasy, George RR Martin may be the king of political-style fantasy, but only JRR Tolkein has, in recent times, been able to harness the awesome power of the first source of story; the legend, told around the campfire, of the hero and the villain, of the character defined by their virtues over their flaws, of the purest, rawest adventure in the pursuit of saving what is good and true in this world. These are the stories written to outlast the generations, and Tolkein’s mastery of them is, to me, the secret to his masterpiece.

**Trigger Warnings** This podcast discusses sexual assault and rape.

Many people just don’t know how to respond when someone comes out and says they’ve been assaulted. They fall into what culture has shown us, unfortunately for the victim, that culture is a rape culture.

Learn how to appropriately and compassionately respond to a victim of abuse and/or sexual assault. Learn what to say to them to help them feel safe and loved. Learn what to say to the accused.

It’s up to us.

Oh Wordle, you’re being modest…

I’m just kidding, Wordle didn’t say these things about me, that’d be crazy. I did however, ask for my friends, co-workers, and a few strangers (not really), to say a few things about me, because I wanted to make a visualization of these things. And apparently my friends are very generous (especially the one who said sexy, thanks for that), as they seem to have only nice things to say, and of course I didn’t pay them to say these things. That would be absurd.

But seriously, I think this Word Cloud actually does a good job of putting ME into perspective. I’m proud to be the quirky guy, I’ve always thrived off of it. I’m an addict for dramatic, passionate for proverbials, and guess what? I’m proud of that, because I really do try to look at things from an entirely different perspective. However, I never let that get in the way of the task at hand, and in fact, I try to use it to enhance the final product. Because the same ol’ same ol’ just doesn’t cut it anymore, and if you aren’t thinking ahead 100 percent of the time, you’ve already fallen behind.

And I refuse to let that happen to me.

I’m going to push ahead, be stronger, be smarter, and make the best of myself. But I also know I can’t do it alone, I know I’ll need help along the way, and that’s why my hearts always open for business. Relationships are key, and I refuse to be locked out. You and I, we’re going places, if you want to join me for the ride!

Oh, and to my friends. Thank you for the kind words. Seriously. Wouldn’t be the man I am today without all of you, that’s for true.

I was woken up before 9am this morning by the sound of the bedroom door opening itself, which means

I was woken up before 9am this morning by the sound of the bedroom door opening itself, which means somewhere in the house a door to the outside world has been opened and wind has forced open our almost unclosable door. I imagine most readers scoffing at my “before 9am” comment, but regular readers will understand why that’s a big deal. Anyway, instead of feeling annoyed or frustrated, I found myself feeling okay – physically, mentally and emotionally.

Last night was a bit frustrating – dance practice with Facu didn’t go so well. Something just wasn’t working and our swing out wasn’t working for some reason. The swing out is considered the defining move of the Lindy Hop and we’ve given it more love than anything else over the years. Of course, musicality and connection are key, but the swing out is just joyful when it goes well. It’s strange to rate a particular dance move so highly, but it’s just really fun and feelgood.

After two days of dodgy swing outs, we were both frustrated – especially because we’re both tired all the time (from his job and my fatigue). It’s hard to accept when something you’ve done well a million times suddenly won’t work. It’s something we’ve talked about time and time again. Facu has a tendency to become completely baffled when something doesn’t work, but that’s just how it goes. Whatever you do in life, there are good days and bad ones. There are moments of ebb and flow. What’s more, there are moments of awareness and moments of blind ignorance. Being aware of a problem isn’t necessarily going backwards – it can be that you’ve reached a new level of awareness, putting you in a great position to overcome whatever the problem is and reach a new higher level.

I want to mention a video that I watched on youtube a couple of years back. I can’t remember the guy’s name (and for the life of me I can’t find the sodding video now), but he did a good job of explaining the learning process. He explains that you are either learning or improving at any given time. He explained that we do not improve in a straight line, but in jumps. A graph of a person’s progress looks like a staircase, with periodic plateaus whilst we take information in and process it followed by sudden leaps in ability level when we implement all that we’ve learned and show notable improvement. He explained that most people start something and become hooked when they reach their first jump in progress. They feel excited and encouraged by their new ability level. However, most people then give up as they are discouraged by the following plateau and have no idea how close they are to the next jump in progress. When we don’t know another step up is just around the corner we often imagine we’ve reached our peak and give up trying.

After last night’s difficult dance practice, we spent some time discussing how we want to approach problems in our dancing. Then before bed, I got onto youtube and found myself checking out lots of videos on stretching and how to become a professional dancer. I just wanted to take another positive step in terms of acting like a professional. I want to be as good as I can and that is going to require me to do everything I can – that is basically the definition of being my best. Before bed, I did a little stretching, telling myself a professional wouldn’t skip that step, no matter how tired or lazy. I’m sure a professional would stretch a little before bed if they were feeling stiff.

This morning, having woken up earlier than usual, I felt fine. I felt focused. I felt like my priority-focused evening set me up well for a positive morning. I was certainly tired and considered going straight back to sleep, but I also noticed a little pang of hunger, despite not feeling ready to eat, which let me know that I would likely get restless sleep at best as my hunger grew…so, I got up. I wondered, if I were to get up earlier each day, what would I do with this time? I didn’t feel ready to dance and I have promised myself an hour of dance after breakfast every day. I wrote down some ideas, including stretching, organising my thoughts, going for a walk, getting everyday chores done.

I then went and poured myself a cup of mate cocido (it’s an Argentinian thing) from Facu’s flask and decided to check out a few more videos. I soon decided to get dressed for dance and moved from passively watching to gentle stretching. If I wasn’t ready to move much I could still get dressed and work through a few soft stretches. Since then I’ve watched a lot of useful videos, had a thorough full-body stretch, brought in the clean washing and published a post on my blog (aside from this one!) – something I rarely get around to before the evening. I’ve also eaten half of my breakfast. Time to finish off, collect more clean clothes from the laundrette 2 minutes away (let’s call that a warm up) and do my hour of dance before I have to teach English.

Currently feeling organised, positive, inspired, enthusiastic, relaxed – content.

Color symbolisms apply to all the hues, shades, tints and tones of the color system. SO moving on to the lighter hues; pink gives us a lot to feel “emotional” about. Since pink is the color mixture of red and white, its energy depends on how much red is within its hue, because white is the potential of fullness. This innocent color, carries a lot of feminine qualities, and suggests innocence and youth. For many it means friendship, softness and kindness. It’s that color that states playfulness, affection and tenderness. More vibrant hues of this color bring upon a high energy that can be either harmonious or extremely enthusiastic. Some other references of this color can be loyalty, unselfishness, motherhood, fragility and to be “delicate.” Pinks begin to get sophisticated when combined with black or white or even (tones in general). Contrary to belief, this color has the power to give a sharp-looking combo. But that many that are most attracted to pink, favor beauty for which its gentle and casual approach are their favorite relaxation. Wearing pink can relieve tension to the “eye of the beholder” it creates emotional healing, a sort of charming magnetism. This is the one color that doesn’t necessarily send off bad vibes when wearing it, the only bad aspect to this color is that it’s long associated to childhood. On that note, just be careful with this nurturing color when you’re trying to be taken seriously.

At Stanzino’s we carry many different products of pink! From tops to dresses to sunglasses! It’s seen within prints, within hand purses, and all of our accessories. Since pink is the color of “youthful thinking” it’s one of those colors that’s highly seen in young woman’s fashion.

**Trigger Warnings** This podcast discusses sexual assault and rape.

To take responsibility for one’s own actions, to be able to say “I fucked up, and I’m sorry,” is very healing and compassionate. It speaks to a loving person with great self-awareness and courage to do so, and the result is more respect from your community and more love in your life.

Stand up. Be a man. Accept responsibility for your actions and show your strength of character by apologizing. Remember, you don’t have to be “wrong” to apologize. You don’t have to be “wrong” to admit that another person has been deeply hurt or traumatized. Acknowledgement and apology. So powerful, indeed.

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven’t posted in ages, been thrown in the air with work haha! I’ve been tangling through other social media and found some inspiration today. Although I do not believe in a religion I am open to all knowledge and being on twitter with other design blogs and designers I came across a christian graphic designer called Andrew Kelsall and he designed these really enthusiastic posters that would draw anyone’s attention to find out what it’s all about. A very modern approach to attract youngsters of all ages to attend church and maybe enjoy the experience. The power of a design can lead people to places that they would probably never go to with out being drawn there by something inspiring.

Here is one of the posters:

Design = faith
