I’ll probably come up with a Best of 2009 list for books and music in a couple weeks, but for

I’ll probably come up with a Best of 2009 list for books and music in a couple weeks, but for now: The Most OK of 2009!

It’s been an epic year to say the least. Plenty of ups and downs. We all know these, because they’ve received the lion’s share of news coverage. But what about the middle? That band doing solid journeyman’s work. Or the hotly anticipated followup novel that was incredibly mild. These are the people I celebrate today.

10. Central Market by Tyondai Braxton – I love Battles. “Atlas” is one of the best songs of the decade. So I had high expectations for singer Braxton’s solo disc. In what crazy directions would he go, unfettered by the other band members? Would he disappear down the rabbit hole of his own studio wizardry like Brian Wilson? The answer was a resounding not really. Central Market neither disappoints nor enthralls, hanging out at the top of the bell curve, afraid to ski down the slope.

9. “Zombieland” – This is why movie studios exist: I was entertained, I laughed, I left the theater and forgot about the movie a month later. I had to go to Metacritic and look up 2009 film releases to be reminded this existed. And was thoroughly middle-of-the-road.

8. The New Yorker iPhone “Brushes” App Covers by Jorge Colombo – This was novel the first time, though none of them carry the wit of Chris Ware’s Halloween cover. What we have are bland covers fashioned in a unique way. Bravo?

7. Julian Plenti is…Skyscraper by Julian Plenti – Interpol’s Paul Banks came up with a persona as developed and fleshed out as a Michael Bay protagonist. Which is to say, not so much. “Unwind” and “Fun That We Have” were good, the rest was decent. Pitchfork does a great job summing up how solidly ok the whole venture is.

6. “Entourage” – This season had some good moments (Matt Damon, everything Ari Gold) and some weak moments (we don’t get to see anything from “Gatsby”?). But I watched every episode, and I will watch the next season, probably out of habit. This season was like asking for a beer and getting O’Doul’s.

5. Peppered turkey and monterey jack cheese sandwiches – Consistently there in 2009, my go-to lunch when I was broke or lazy.

4. “I Love You, Man” – Every time I catch myself saying “totes my goats,” I wish I were quoting a better movie. If the director had just excised the “Slappin’ tha bass, mon!” scene, this Paul Rudd vehicle wouldn’t even have made the list.

3. Brooklyn Lager – Get over yourselves everyone. It’s inconsistent from tap to tap. Also, I would expect a beer named after an entire borough to reference more than just the Gowanus Canal.

2. March – Just so-so this year.

1. “Inherent Vice” by Thomas Pynchon – We get it, Pynchon really loves The Big Lebowski. We all do. And I thought aligning Pynchon’s typical miasma of paranoia with an überstoner’s unreliable reportage was a witty touch. But the best thing I can say about this one is it’s a good entry point for Pynchon novitiates, second to “The Crying of Lot 49.” The less said about this book’s heavy-handed final few pages, the better. (Fog! It’s a metaphor, get it?!)

You might have heard about Urth Cafe if you watch HBO’s Entourage. Urth is one of Vinny’

You might have heard about Urth Cafe if you watch HBO’s Entourage. Urth is one of Vinny’s hangouts. Just like in the show, it’s a scene and it’s always packed with the LA types I go out of my way to avoid. But we were shopping in Melrose a few blocks away and I wanted dessert.

The first time I had Urth’s pumpkin pie (pictured) was with a director friend who got offended because I made fun of the cafe’s name. I thought he was mispronouncing “earth” and it wasn’t until I looked at the sign outside that I got it. “It figures,” I said laughing. He took it so personally. “Don’t you like the place?” he said as if he owned the place.

Anyway, that was three years ago and since then, I eat Urth pumpkin pie once a year. I described it to my companion and I could tell he thought I was exaggerating. “It’s twice as thick and the crust is yummy. They give you a huge piece topped with real, freshly whipped cream.”

We got lucky and got to sit outside in perfect Southern California weather albeit in the midst of show business chatter and shenanigans.

I heard barking coming from a dog and then from a dude. The jackass, dressed in $200 jeans and oversized sunglasses, barked back at the dog and the dog barked back and so on. Only a wannabe producer or comedian would bark back at a dog. It was strange, because the dog had been quiet until the asshole walked by. He must have disapproved of his outfit and was letting him know. Everyone looked on at the scene he was creating. It wasn’t funny and the dog’s owner told him he was making things worse.

You can imagine my disappointment when, the $7 slice of pie I had to share, was almost half the size of what I had been served before. And no whipped cream! A few minutes later, the busboy showed up with a small ramekin filled with, not fresh, real whipped cream, but Reddi Wip. I wondered if this affront was due to the recession. The pie was creamy, sorta’ lush, and the spicy, graham cracker-like crust didn’t disappoint. However, I don’t know if feeling let down by the size of the slice and Reddi Wip affected my taste buds, but I remember it being much better. I should have ordered the bread pudding like I wanted to but I was dissuaded by my companion. After this pumpkin pie experience and the pineapple upside down cake one at Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen in Napa earlier this month (a story for another day), I will never be talked out of over-ordering dessert. You can always take it home if you get full!

I hate going to West Hollywood because the parking is bad and the people are fake and annoying. I hate sharing dessert because I can always eat the whole thing. And I hate it when my expectations are crushed.

A group of young posers sitting next to us talked about recent movies and then the conversation turned to New Moon. A guy said he had unfriended someone from Facebook because he had liked it. My companion shook his head, laughed and let me have the last bite of pie. I wanted more but the line to order was too long. I hate waiting in line.

We walked back to the car and encountered the perfect ending to a disappointing lunch: a $45 parking ticket on my window.

Entourage is an HBO original series created by Doug Ellin that chronicles the upward thrust of Vince

Entourage is an HBO original series created by Doug Ellin that chronicles the upward thrust of Vincent Chase – a young A-list movie star – and his adolescence buddies from Queens, NY City as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of Hollywood, California. There are lots of places to observe Entourage Season six Online Free, especially since its an HBO show and most shows end up online anyways. Naturally, many of us don’t pay and don’t want to pay for HBS shows even if its as good as Entourage. So, we all resort to watching Entourage season 6 streaming on the web.

Watch Entourage TV Series online episodes streaming full for free . Where can i watch Entourage online episodes for free?I spotted you can watch Entourage season 6 online free on almost any video hosting site. I mean, youtube, dailymotion, and all those giant video sites have it. But the bad part is the indisputable fact that its all broken up in like 10-20 minute intervals.

I noticed an increased video stream quality level in some sites, there’s still nothing in comparison to the video quality of a DVD. Get here your Entourage DVDs season 1, season two, season 3, season 4 and download individual episodes. The 1st place to look at Entourage online episodes for free is that one ( full seasons, full episodes, from season one to season four ). You may watch entourage streaming online in Alluc, though season 2 is missing. I assume that those 2 links are sufficient. The official Entourage site has the newest Entourage video clips and teasers. There are lots of ways you can watch your fave show on your PC freely. You can stream entourage on websites that you search for on google. You can download entourage by also using google or download software that allows you to download movies and episodes on the internet. Torrents is another method to download watch entourage season five episodes but if you prefer to just watch it on your computer and not download anything. I’d highly recommend going to WatchEntourageShow.com on their web site you’ll be able to find working episodes of all the latest entourage season 5 episodes.

Entourage first aired back in 2004, as did plenty of other great HBO titles. This can be it’s six season running on the HBO network. The show follows an A-List star named Vince Chase and the folk around him like his pals and family. The show is about Adrian Grenier whose a Hollywood actor living in LA. His childhood friends will move with him to start a new life-style in Hollywood, CA. Not only are you able to watch entourage episodes online but you can watch any film and television show you want on the internet for nothing.

there were guest appearances made on the show my other stars including the likes of Kanye West, Luke Wilson, Martin Scorsese, Jessica Alba, Bob Saget, Gary Bussy and Sarah Silverman. One of the shows co producers include Mark Wahlberg who latterly married Rhea Durham. Vincent Chases role in the show is designed to outline the life that Mark Wahlberg had back in the 1990s.In the show Entourage, You get to experience their life as they live it. They have many issues about cash and about girls and all of the parties they go too. You will also see them mack on all of the pretty young ladies within the Hollywood, CA area. There are many great and attractive stars who you will see in this show.

It follows the theme of male friendships and life in Hollywood. Some of the main actors on the show include : Kevin Connolly, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferarra, Jeremy Piven, Perrey Reeves, Debi Mazar and Rex Lee.It’s hard infrequently when you have things planned and you forget to look at your favorite television Show. Thankfully , we now have the Internet and we are able to watch all our fave old TV Shows on the internet.

Being an A-List star does have its ups for Vincent Chase but it also has its downs having everybody chasing after you. Vincents brother Johnny Chase is also a{ super| movie | star, but a D-List movie star meaning hes worst virtually nothing. Many people like to watch their favourite TV seasons. It’s surprisingly wonderful precisely what number of folks like to observe their TV shows on their computer. You may notice folk on your facebook posting oh I’m going to watch entourage today after I workout at the gymnasium. Watching TV shows on your personal computer is much more better than even Tivo and best of all it is extremely free.

“Entourage” is a dramedy which glimpses upon the day-to-day life of Vincent (Vince) Chase and his childhood friends from Queens, New York City. A young A-list movie star, he brought with him, from their hometown: his best friend and manager, Eric “E” Murphy, his older half-brother, Johnny “Drama” Chase, and another old friend from childhood, Salvatore who is also known as “Turtle”, the least savvy of the group.

Addition Resources:
Watch 90210 Online Video
Gossip Girl Watch Episode for Free
Watch 90210 Episode Online Free
How To Watch 90210
Watch Gossip Girl 2

In addition to the title as half-brother, Johnny plays in Vince’s life the role of personal chef and trainer. A D-list actor who, during his younger days, was in the cast of the fictional show “Viking Quest”, he has the amazing opportunity to resurrect his fame and career with the role in the new fictional hit show “Five Towns”. Although his value as employee is often brought into question, Turtle gives as good as he gets and tries to do his part as Vince’s driver and assistant. And there is also Ari Gold, our great actor’s abrasive but lovable agent.|There are many ways you can watch your favorite show on your computer for free. You can stream entourage on websites that you search for on google. You can download entourage by also using google or download software that allows you to download movies and episodes online. Torrents is another method to download watch entourage season 5 episodes but if you prefer to just watch it on your computer and not download anything. I would highly recommend going to WatchEntourageShow.com on their website you can find working episodes of all the latest entourage season 5 episodes.

The first chapters of “Entourage” follow Vincent Chase as he adventures in the world of Hollywood and fleeting fame, after his first successful movie: “Head On”. While the boys are getting used to the perks of stardom, in the forefront is the quarrel between Eric and Ari, who are both working to keep Vince’s star rising, but often disagree when it comes to sound decisions. Throughout the seasons come out in the wash Turtle’s laziness and viciousness, Johnny’s attempt to string along with his younger brother, E dating Ari’s assistant Emily and Vince’s varied and numberless love affairs. On the way step into picture both new promising projects with ups and downs and conflicts.

The series has at least one celebrity guest per episode. Appearances include Jessica Alba, Gary Busey, Larry David, Snoop Dogg, Scarlett Johansson, Jimmy Kimmel, Ali Larter, Mandy Moore, Michael Phelps, Martin Scorsese, Kanye West, Luke Wilson, Tom Brady, Andrew Bynum, Zac Efron, Gal Gadot, LeBron James, as well as many others. “Entourage” illustrates the heady excesses of today’s celebrity lifestyle and how difficult is to find love and success in the wild world of show biz. Enjoy!

New Kids on the Block.

It was very dark, and Vincent Chase didn’t know whether he was awake or asleep. He was in a car, and it was moving fast, but that was all he could say for sure. In his dream (or what he thought must have been in his dream), he had been in the passenger seat of another car, somehow on I-95, his mother taking them to Florida, brother Johnny out cold in the back seat. They’d never had the money to take vacations, really, but that one time, somehow, his mom had pulled off. They drove through the night and once Vince had woken up and they were in another state one- he had never heard of before- and it felt like another world.

Time had always seemed like a flexible concept to Vincent Chase. His first year of stardom had seemed like a decade, with the parties and clubs every night, after the party a girl, maybe two, and the guys there in the morning when he woke up to start it all over again, The days just… flowed. And then, later, after the bad movies, and the bad women, and the bad business deals, when he had retreated into himself, and into his penthouse- he could have sworn ten years had passed the second the big heavy door clicked shut behind him. But now, with Mary, time seemed to have suddenly speeded up again, with her he was a frightened old man, and he was a child again, speeding southbound for the promised land. It was all very confusing.

“You awake, baby?” asked his mother, and Vince sped upward through the well of time, into the light, into consciousness, and he knew again that his mother was twenty years dead, and Johnny now too, and the person talking to him was the girl, Mary, in the driver’s seat. Whatever road they were on, there were no lights. Just the faint orange glow of the city, over the horizon in the rearview. Above the convertible, the dome of the stars offered their ancient benediction down to Vince, and the girl, and whatever else was still alive out here.

For a second Vincent Chase loses everything- he has no idea at all where he is, or even who he is: He is blessedly, blissfully, blank. And then it’s all back. The engine purrs as Mary downshifts and eases the big muscle car off the main road.

“Where are we?” asks Vince, and Mary, her voice as soothing and smooth as the one in Vince’s dream, replies, “Almost home.”

QUEST attended the HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA Season One Wrap Party at VENTO TRATTORIA at 675 Hudson St. The evening included cocktails and dinner (read: proseco and pasta) and dancing.

HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA is HBO’s newest show set to premiere around Valentine’s Day. The show is considered to be somewhat of a New York City version of Entourage. Read more.

At the party, QUEST spotted Eddie Kaye Thomas (Paul Finch from American Pie) and the gorgeous Lake Bell, met Bryan Greenberg (the lead), and had a conversation with Julian Farino (the director, who’s also been involved with projects like Entourage and Sex and the City).

Everyone was very pleased with the project, confirming that they “had a hit” on their hands. QUEST is really excited about how location-heavy the show is supposed to be and can’t wait to see shots from all around our favorite city!

The lovely DC Princess does a weekly blog called I LOVE Fridays. I was inspired by reading her posts each week to write one similar last week called *LOVE*.

I so enjoyed doing the *LOVE* post that I think I might make it a regular event. Not sure yet but we shall see. It won’t be on a specific day because, well I have too many days devoted. And I just can’t commit to that kind of pressure. HAHA

I won’t however be restricting myself to only “Things” today like I did last time. Just whatever comes to mind. Yay! (say Yay, you know you want to)

Here goes….

I *LOVE* that my ass is all healed!! YAY!!! (what a freakin’ nightmare that shit was!) SHEEZ!

I *LOVE* that I got soooo many comments, emails, phone calls and messages from people telling me how much I was missed last week! I was shocked and honored. And now I have a big head. Yay!!

I *LOVE* my Jacuzzi bathtub. Yay!

I *LOVE* that we got all of the shopping done for Thanksgiving today! No more crazy crowds. Yay!

I *LOVE* that I got awards from AMAZING bloggers this week. Thank you Carma Sez! Thank you Stuperhero Extraordinaire! And a very belated thank you to MommyBrain and Rudy Family Rukus! All are great, please check them out. Yay!

I *LOVE* that someone rushed out of Wal-Mart with such hunger to getiton that they just whipped ripped their “Ecstasy” Trojans out of the box and left the box in the parking lot. Yay!

I *LOVE* that I stopped to take a picture of the empty Trojan Box thinking ahead that I just had to share my jealousy excitement with all you poor, unsuspecting readers. *grin* Yay!

I *LOVE* Entourage!! I just started watching it and have made it through to the middle of season 4. I can’t believe I ever missed this show!! It is sooooo good! Yay!!

I *LOVE* that the weather is finally getting cooler. Wearing long pants is much more socially acceptable when you go 4 weeks without shaving. Haha Yay!!

I *LOVE* that December is so close now I can taste it! Because it means TWO things that I *LOVE* are coming. #1 The holidays! (and my house gets uber awesome decos for the holidays) And #2 our next round of injections!! Yay!

I’ve been off the grid for a while, doing all kinds of stuff. A lot of it is actually what my parents would call “constructive”, but there’s been a few time-wasters in there as well, and one of those was the TV show Entourage. I’ve just done the entire 6 seasons.

No idea why, but it was just one of those shows I never got to the first time around. I’m not even sure that it’s scheduled on Singapore TV. I suspect not because it contains adult themes, and our media doesn’t really think we’re mature enough to handle those. That’s not the reason though, because I can’t remember the last time I actually watched something on Singapore TV. Mediacorp… feel free to send me a survey form and I’ll tell you why.

On the surface it’s a guys’ fantasy about 4 friends (and their agent) making good in LA, but I found a lot to love underneath. For a start it’s in a tight, slickly scripted 30 minute format. But also, and perhaps this is because I watched 6 seasons in one continuous run, it’s a lovely example of complex character exploration. You’d think it was going to revolve around pretty superstar Vince (Adrian Grenier), but actually he turns out to be quite one-dimensional in comparison to the others. As an ensemble piece it unfolds quite slowly. The characters you start off hating you grow to love, the ones that seemed to be in the background step into the light, and the relationships between them build in complexity.

I think there’s some beauty in that. In my work and leisure at the moment there seems to be a lot of immediacy. It’s as if attention spans have shrunk to the size of a peanut and so everything has been sliced to sashimi-thinness for easy digestion.

Perhaps that’s true. Maybe we just don’t have the time, motivation or cognitive capacity to take our time with things anymore.

Or maybe everyone is just assuming that it’s true, and we’re giving each other what we think we want.

No doubt there’s a lot of cleverness tied in with immediacy. Punchy copy, lots of take-that-as-read, a great respect for the literacy of the audience.

But as that cycle gets faster and faster, I think at some point a new respect will grow for the long exposition. Because there’s a lot of cleverness in that too.

Handling för Shaun of the Dead

If you are keen on the show ‘Entourage’, you know what a favourite show this has become. As with any cult favourite, you could be a common fan with interest in showing your affection for the characters by wearing entourage clothing like T-shirts and hats seen on the show. As the show becomes more popular, more fans will support their fave characters and the common one liners that become part of the TV show culture.
If you haven’t noticed as the time moves forward our technology is really advancing at a rapid fast pace that has never been seen in today’s time. He knows the money train could end at anytime and is willing to live life to the fullest with his close friends from the neighborhood.

In the 5th season finale Martin Scorsese offered Vince a lead in his upcoming re-envisioning of The Great Gatsby set in the Upper West Side of New York. Jamie Lynn-Sigler validated all of Turtle’s claims by admitting the two of them were together, and they all cruised to Hollywood to celebrate the best moments of their lives together. After the miserable failure of Medellin and the termination of Smoke Signals in middle of the production and Gus Van Sant’s slowness to get involved, Vince seems to be in even more danger than usual by becoming irrelevant by the end of the season. Will the Scorsese picture lead him to success and allow the series to go in a new direction? Or will he only slide further in celebrity stardom?
Turtle – an underperformer who enjoys the LA life-style .
The word douche has increased on television and it’s pretty hilarious. Now the media has picke

The word douche has increased on television and it’s pretty hilarious. Now the media has picked up on it and some people think it’s disgusting. Funny how it’s not once used to describe Entourage. NYTimes:

In total, the word has surfaced at least 76 times already this year on 26 prime-time network series, according to research by the Parents Television Council, which compiled the statistics at the request of The New York Times. That is up from 30 uses on 15 shows in all of 2007 and just six instances on four programs in 2005.

Really? Douche isn’t that bad of a word. For me it fills the void that Yuppie did in the 80s. All you have to do is park yourself in front of your TV and watch CSI or any of it’s useless spin-offs; the violence, body parts and brutal murders (not to mention the terrible script and acting) are way more offensive than a word that currently fits pretty well into our cultural lexicon.

Your tax dollars at work………………….it just makes you sick

This was recently in the UK papers but not the papers here…

Michelle Obama Takes Girls to London for Fish and Chips

A Boeing 757 and a fleet of armored cars for Michelle’s sightseeing tour!

On Sunday, President Obama flew back to the United States on Air Force One. His wife, two daughters and her mother did a bit of shopping in Paris before taking their own Boeing 757 (C-32) over to London to do some sightseeing. We all remember Obama’s admonishment to corporate CEOs in February:

“You can’t get corporate jets, you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime.”

Apparently that doesn’t apply to his wife.

The London Times opened its description of Michelle’s visit this way:

Motorcycle outriders, armoured Chevrolets and bullet-headed men in raincoats criss-crossed London yesterday as Michelle Obama and her daughters spent a second day on an unofficial visit to the capital.

The Times went on to describe that when Michelle and the girls arrived at Westminster Abbey, the building was closed to tourists with people already in told to “wait against the wall.” An American visiting the Abbey said “Right then I knew it was probably someone from our ‘royal family’.”

Michelle’s motorcade shut down the London street above as the First Lady of the World and her children go for Fish and Chips at a pub in Mayfair . The entourage inside the restaurant was 15 people while dozens more wait outside. Include the dozens of Air Force personnel to fly and service the plane, embassy personnel and other staff and we are talking about a serious expenditure of taxpayer dollars.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans have lost their jobs and won’t be able to take their family on a summer holiday. Despite their circumstances they’ll still be expected to fork over the tax dollars to pay for Michelle’s trip!

It’s almost too easy to look cool in a fedora, but lately you really only see them worn iron

It’s almost too easy to look cool in a fedora, but lately you really only see them worn ironically on the heads of unbathed hipsters listening to the newest album by ”The Pussy Farts” in a grimy coffee shop complaining about how they totally sold out when they did a full track of auto-tuned queefing. Honestly, it’s nice to see a more beefy gentleman in a fedora and Batista has dirty hipsters to thank for allowing his style to look fresh. It’s true that Batista doesn’t always get the best storylines on Dexter (admit it: all we really care about is watching Dexter chop up killers and replaying that first scene where Lundy explained his lunch routine), but what he lacks in character development he makes up for in fedora. I think part of the appeal is how odd of a costume choice it is to put a Cuban in a fedora, and how surprisingly well it works. Witness now the start of a new movie cliché: the chunky Cuban detective wearing a fedora.

This entry isn’t so much about the type of hat as it about how it’s worn. Baseball caps complement Jerry Ferrara’s head like a paper bag over Steve Buscemi’s. Turtle also gets points for variety: I feel like the guy’s probably wearing a different hat every episode. I’d check, but that means I have to rewatch the more recent (see: terrible) seasons of the show. Lately he’s been trying out the hatless look, but it’s a lot like finding out your son is gay: you can’t really get angry about it and it’s not exactly a bad thing but there’s no way you’re going to encourage it. Keep the hat on, Turtle. It’s already hard enough to stomach that Meadow Soprano is dating you both on- and off-screen. You have to hand it to him though: the baseball cap fits so well that it’s almost wearing him (which is more likely considering the hats are probably more intelligent than the character.) Congrats, Turtle. You’ve redeemed baseball caps for society.

He’s the king of the world! I can’t honestly remember if Christian Bale ever donned one of these caps in that shitty musical, but Vondas’ looks better in it anyway. Bale was at his best with a raincoat, an axe, and Huey Lewis playing in the background. Seriously, though… it’s no wonder Vondas is The Greek’s personal liaison for dealing with the shady business of the Baltimore drug world: it’s such a casual look, but it’s also very empowering and controlling. This ever-calm Greek absolutely towers over everyone else in the room with this hat. I’ve got no doubts that this cap has magical abilities bestowed upon it by the paperboys who wore them in the 20’s: you want to listen to everything the wearer has to say. When Vondas is sitting on a park bench staring off into the cold distance and talking business, I forget I’m watching The Wire and start formulating love letters in my head until I remember what I’m watching and start getting depressed about how much Baltimore sucks. [Honorable mention goes to the hat that The Greek wears.]

What would we do without Seinfeld? Sure, it doesn’t beat the puffy shirt but then again, what can? I still maintain that this is a great idea for a hat. I mean, it’s clearly not a great idea for a hat, but it’s still a great idea for a hat. I’m almost disappointed that hipsters haven’t taken advantage of this opportunity for ironic hats. Expect them to switch from fedoras to urban sombreros within the next year. I feel like there must have been a handful of ideas for what ridiculous clothing item Elaine would come up with to put on the cover of the J. Peterman catalague, but as soon as they conjured up the urban sombrero it was over. It’s surely not the greatest contribution Seinfeld has given us (that would have to be The Contest) but the fact that the phrase “urban sombrero” now exists in the pop-culture lexicon gets me warm and fuzzy inside. Plus, this episode gave us Kramer fighting little kids in a karate class.

Back when Malcolm in the Middle was still on, nobody in their right mind considered Bryan Cranston a “badass.” Then came Breaking Bad, and we were forced to adjust. “What? Frankie Muniz’s goofy dad is playing a cancer-riddled meth dealer?” Walter White practically re-wrote the definition of “badass.” Who else could convince you to use that word to describe a man stumbling out of an RV wearing whitie-tighties in the middle of the desert? When the cancer got worse we watched him shave his head, and a tiny little footnote was added to the definition. And then he put on the bowler cap - Merriam-Webster had to put out a new edition. Bald, bowler cap, glasses, trench-coat – Bryan Cranston was no longer Walter White, nor was he “Heisenberg” – he became the posterboy for man-boners everywhere. This is undeniably the coolest any man over 50 years-old has ever looked. Look at that fucking hat.

That has to be the theme in New Orleans and Indianapolis as the Saints finally have a defense to go with their prolific offense and the Colts still have Peyton Manning. As the last two undefeated teams in football, there really is nothing that worries these teams, especially the Colts who disposed of their chief rival on Sunday Night. Stay tuned as both have tough match-ups coming up. Colts in the ultimate grudge match (I think they may have played in Baltimore at some point…) and Saints (The Patriots come to town soon).

New England Patriots, San Diego Chargers, and Minnesota Vikings

“Don’t think I don’t think about it”

-Darius Rucker “Don’t think I don’t think about it”

Each team has to have certain moments from the season on their mind. The Patriots are one foot away (on a fourth down conversion against the Colts) from knocking off the AFC’s top team and putting distance between them and a middling division. The Chargers are one sensational fourth down play (see: Lewis, Ray vs. Sproles, Darren) away from challenging for the AFC’s top spots. The Vikings are one mishandled Chester Taylor pass away from perfection. Though, each team is playing at a high level, which helps to quell those “what if’s”. On a sidenote: Props to Darius Rucker, Country newcomer of the year.

Cincinatti Bengals

“I’ll step on your porch, step to your boss/Let’s end the speculation, I’m talking to all you.”

-Jay-Z “Ain’t no Love (Heart of the City”)

Marvin Lewis has the Queen City Team playing like a bunch of bullies. The Bengals are wearing the “Me against the world” title better than anyone this side of Tupac and the mid-90s Knicks. Punishing defense, crushing run game (even more now that they’ve signed Larry “I didn’t mean to insult homosexuals, just Todd Haley” Johnson)… Still. I don’t believe in them. That “Hard Knocks” series before the season revealed something (not as much as I thought as I made constant “So this is what a 4-12 team looks like” remarks), but something. I’m not ready to put them up in the second tier division, yet. I know they swept the Ravens and Steelers, but still… there’s something still lacking.

Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and Atlanta Falcons

“Woe is me, baby, this is tragic/ ‘Cause we had it, we was magic/ I was flyin’, now I’m crashin’”

-Kanye West “Knock you Down”

Each of these teams went from being sky high to well, not. The Broncos started the season media darlings before being brought back to earth by the Ravens and Steelers in consecutive weeks, understandable. However, the inexcusable thrashing they suffered at the hands of the Washington Clinton Portis’ was baffling. The Steelers, more understandably, were swept by the Bengals. The Cowboys were upended by the Brokeback Packers (not a gay diss, just an Aaron Rodgers diss… He looks like Jake Gyllenhal) who haven’t been able to win many games (only three out of their last ten!!). The Eagles suffered back-to-back losses that weren’t very close. The Falcons just lost to the Panthers…

Needless to say, each of these teams needs to regroup, much like Kanye in this whole post-award show backlash.

New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens

“Reasons, like seasons, they constantly change and the seasons of last year, like reasons, have faded away.”

-Something Corporate “Me and the Moon”

The success of last season has (mostly) been missing for these teams. All of them have struggled with the pre-season expectations and (more likely) their adjusted schedules. The Giants raced out fast only to quickly be in search of answers losing four of their last five. The Dolphins have introduced a lot of new wrinkles to their wildcat formation without the electric success from last year. The Ravens have lost four games by an average of 5.3 points, the close games they thrived on finding ways to win last year. Just like the tier above and below these teams, they need to find a way to right the ship or the next season (off-season) could be filled with many, discontenting reasons.

New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, and San Francisco 49ers

“But heaven ain’t close in a place like this/Anything goes but don’t blink you might miss.”

-The Killers “Somebody Told Me”

What a grab bag of teams here… Each team has been great and awful this year (as has everyone else); however, these teams tend to be less “killers” than anything else. Though, as with every season, each team still has a glimmer of hope to redeem what’s left, but, if they blink, they’ll miss. Can Mark Sanchize pull a Matt Ryan/Joe Flacco and get his entourage to the play-offs? Can Vince Young keep up his magic (3-0 since he became the starter)? Can Maurice Jones-Drew carry the whole team every week? Will Jay Cutler continue to try his hardest to submarine the play-off chances of the Bears? Does anyone want to win the NFC West!?!?!?! By week 12, we will know all of these answers and more.

Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, and Houston Texans

“Maybe, in the future, you’re gonna come back, you’re gonna come back to me.”

-Ingrid Michaelson “Maybe”

This is surely what the QBs of these three teams are saying in terms of their fan support. Donnie Darko-Rodgers caught a break with a win over Tony “It must be getting cold outside because I’m losing games I should win” Romo and the Cowboys, but Green Bay won’t forget he’s not Favre (especially with the Vikings having swept the Packers already this season). Poor Jake of the man, Steve Smith and the Charlotte fans are done with him. It’s official. They’re now, firmly, in the Sam Bradford/Troy Smith Sweepstakes. As for Houston, all the passing yards look nice, Matt Schaub, but win a game of importance or stay healthy for a whole season. Either one would be nice at this point.

Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Seattle Seahawks

“I know that it’s coming, I just hope that I’m alive for it.”

-Drake “Successful”

Yes, this entry needed a follow-up lyric to the first installment. That’s really all there is to say about these teams. Poor Clinton Portis and Jason Campbell… I would say I’m surprised by Josh Johnson play except that I’m more surprised by how well Josh Freeman has played. He’s been consistent and stepped up when he needs to most… the two things he embarrassingly lacked at K-State. The Ron Prince Era looks better and better. Oh, and Matt Hasselback was washed up two seasons ago. I’m frantically searching for evidence to the contrary.

Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, and Oakland Raiders

“See potential in ya, let me mould that/I can transform ya, I can transform ya.”

-Chris Brown “I can Transform Ya”

This one goes out to the young Bills (Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson, and Roscoe Parrish), young Lions (Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Kevin Smith), and young Raiders (Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Louis Murphy, and JaMarcus Russell… Well, maybe not Russell). Better times are coming guys. Whether that means you get traded to well-managed franchises or you’re indentured until you hit free agency, hope is out there. Or your GM could talk himself into Tebow being the Spread QB to break the trend and you get to chase after his wobbly ducks all next season. It could really go either way at this point.

St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs

“It never stops, when my mama ask me will I change/ I tell her yeah, but it’s clear I’ll always be the same.”

-Tupac “Until the End of Time”

It feels like the Rams and Chiefs will continue to be horrible until the end of time. The Rams can’t find anyone to buy them and will probably end up moving back to LA where they weren’t really liked in the first place. If they were smart, they’d change their name in transit. Maybe fool the West Coast into thinking they were someone else for a few years. Steven Jackson is football’s version of Zach Greinke. The Chiefs are a mess and I blame Todd Haley. One person hasn’t ruined a team this badly since Toni Braxton was making her rounds in Dallas. How do you alienate a future hall of famer (Tony Gonzales), a perennial pro bowl running back (Well, Larry Johnson has his own demons and would’ve self-destructed eventually… but Haley hurried the process), and a rising star wide receiver (Dwayne Bowe, too, is a moron, but at least he doesn’t post moronic Twitter updates and inspire a whole city to petition him out of town)? Herm Edwards and Carl Petersen just keep smiling wider and brighter each week on their respective television appearances.

Cleveland Browns

“We see the sun about three times a year!”

-Hastily made Cleveland Tourism Video

This is, roughly, the same number of wins Browns fans can expect in any given season… And now they want to use Lebron in football games!?!?! Whose idea was it to bring football back here, again?

Saigon developed a little fame by entrenching himself in the New York underground. Lil Fame developed a following that built the NY underground that Saigon later capitalized off of. Somehow Saigon fell off the rap radar, at least on radars that ZIF respects. Perhaps it was his tenure on HBO’s Entourage or maybe his emotional and fluffy “beef” with Joe Budden, either way, Saigon’s name does not enlist the ooh’s an ah’s from hip hop heads like he did half a decade ago. What I like about this video is the no-nonsense commitment to keeping this video “NY Gully”, nice grainy graphic, with plenty of shots of New York’s primary asset, it’s grand skyline. On a career note, I think Saigon needs to pair up with the likes of Fame and other proven industry rappers, he’s at that re-dip stage of his career. You know, like when you dip a nacho in cheese, and then bite half of it off, chew, and then dip again. Yeah, a half eaten nacho, that sounds about right.

I was never a touchy person. My husband loves the hugs and the snuggles, and it took a long time for

I was never a touchy person. My husband loves the hugs and the snuggles, and it took a long time for me to get comfortable with this. There was an invisible line drawn down the middle of the bed, and I was perfectly happy to stick to my side. The only time I enjoyed touch was with my pets. For whatever reason, the snuggly dog didn’t bug me as much as the snuggly husband, who smelled piles better than the pooch. (My dog is snuggling with my feet as I type this.)

So this touch-phobia made becoming an esthetician a bit challenging. I spend hours touching people. And I will be honest, it really took a while to get used to touching a stranger and being OK with it. And I will also admit that there are moments when it can still be difficult for me. If I don’t connect immediately with the person on the table, I am much more tentative and it can take a while for the touch to feel comfortable.

Touch is a very powerful thing. So is a lack of touch. According to the massage magazine Body Sense, “So serious are the effects of touch deprivation, it’s considered by researchers to be worse than physical abuse.” I am not sure that I am comfortable going that far, but clearly touch (and lack of it) are important to the overall well being of our bodies and minds.

Body Sense cites a University of North Carolina study that found hugging reduced the body’s level of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol is the hormone associated with weakening the immune system, anxiety, anger, not to mention, of course, acne. This same team of research scientists also observed that hugs boosted the levels the hormone oxytocin, which improves heart function.

Here in the US, we aren’t comfortable being touchy. There are a thousand reasons why–we’re litigious and touch can be misinterpreted; we are technology driven and have minimal interaction with live human beings. In a city like NY, where people are packed in so tightly, touch avoidance is a herculean effort, and getting off a subway without the brush of a stranger’s skin is worthy of an Olympic medal. Personal space is sacred, and this may be to the detriment of our health.

I pushed through my comfort zone and learned to appreciate and value touch. Where I once favored extractions (estheticians all love the goop removal), massage is now my favorite part of the treatment. When I feel the tension release, I know that the person on my table is mentally and physically detoxing. And going through my rituals of massage, the focus I need to perform them, and the warmth that touch brings, allows my brain to drain and relaxes me as well.

So take a minute, right now, to hug your significant other, your kid, your dog, your cat, your Mom, whoever is closest (OK, maybe not your boss). And I don’t mean that hug that’s akin to an air kiss. Hug it like you mean it!

from January 10, 2008 I was out for dinner at the Vegas Diner. I try not to go there too much when I

from January 10, 2008

I was out for dinner at the Vegas Diner. I try not to go there too much when I’m paying. Not because I’m cheap- it is a diner after all, not the automat. If I were cheap then I’d take my dates to Subway and get a pair of $5 footlongs. Used to be that you could only get a deal like that in Times Square back in the 1970’s. But I digress.

We were out. It was a long day, and by eight o’clock she had to eat. You know how women are. “I’m hungry I’m tired I’m on my period.” All the freakin’ time. Yeah well, I had a bag of Doritos for lunch and flatulence that would kill a mule but you don’t hear me complaining.

The Vegas Diner is a good diner with good food. The problem is that, a couple of times a month, my family goes out to eat together and we pretend to be a family in the sense that we’re related, not in the Manson Family sense. The bill is anywhere from $60 to $80 bucks and over time we’ve developed a favorite waiter (Mr. Abraham with the strange eye) whom we ask for all the time. He treats us like gold and bends over backwards (not so we could shtupp him the ass but) to serve us. Why? Because Mom gives him a $25 tip every week. That’s $25 dollars on a bill of $60. And if he isn’t there, we’ve got a backup waiter who gets the same thing. So we tend to get good service.

When I walk in, I get the same ass-kissing treatment I do with my family, so I have to tip stupidly well too. Thanks Mom. It has gotten to the point that there is a busboy during the day that we have to slip $2. A busboy. And what does he do? Brings us water and asks “how’s your Mom?”. Remember Jimmy the Gent in Goodfellas slipping the bartender $100 for keeping the ice cold? That’s me.

So I was there tonight and I was in the weird angle table just on the left as you walk in. I hate that table, but the hostesses don’t get tipped so they don’t care where I sit. I once saw Mr. Abraham throw a party of six out of their seats when we walked in. And that party? Borough President Marty Markowitz’s mother’s 101st birthday, so you know we tip well.

I am a people watcher. Which is not the same thing as a Peeping Tom but I’ll admit it- there is some overlap. Just across from us was a rather odd couple, for a few reasons. You know Adrian Grenier, from Entourage? Don’t feel bad, most people don’t either. Anyway, this guy looked like Adrian Grenier if he were missing a couple of key chromosomes and entered the Anthony Cumia look-alike contest. You really had to see him. I noticed him not because of his odd looks but because of the way he ate a pickle.

Some of you (one of you. OK, Marc) may know my family connection to the pickle industry. I won’t go into it here but decades ago I invented the still famous Hulk Hogan Pickle ad. Suffice it to say that I know a number three from a number five and can still tell you the age of a quart of brine at six paces. So I am sensitive to pickles.

The Adrian Grenier guy had a plate full of number five sour pickles and ate them with a fork and knife, George Costanza style. Seriously. He cut the pickle into slices, then ate them with a fork. Dainty.

I was appalled.

Pickles are finger food. Meaning, you eat them with your fingers. Trust me, there is nothing better than a woman fingering a pickle and slurping it into her mouth. What? That was sexual? Let me read that back.

I stand by that statement.

Anyway, just to show how it is done in these parts (meaning Not Bizarro World) I took a number three sour from my plate, lifted it up, and crunched into it with a snap that would do the Vlassic Stork proud. I showed him.

He kept up with the knife and fork routine.
But he knew.

That alone was enough to mark him with the Sign of the Beast, but as Billy Mays says “wait! There’s more!” He was washing down the pickles with a chocolate egg cream.

That’s just gross.

I couldn’t stand to see this anymore. I spent too many years in the biz to see pickles treated that way. Now I had to see his date. And here I had to look twice because it was just strange.

He was there with an Asian woman who, in general build and hairstyle, resembled my friend Kathy. Not so much in the face because she was smiling (don’t kill me) but for a second I flashed back to the picture Kathy had on her iphone, her myspace profile, her yearbook page, framed above the entrance to her house, of her and the real Adrian Grenier. It was so bizarre that I took out some paper and a pen and started taking notes. Right during dinner. (Believe it or not ladies I’m still free. Catch me while you can.)

Their food came and Adrian got a bacon cheeseburger deluxe and Kathy got a plate of chicken fingers. I guess HBO doesn’t pay too well. He then mixed some ketchup and what looked like flem in a plate and dipped his fries into it. It looked really gross but at least he stopped defiling the pickles.

I took notes as I ate my roast pork deluxe (which the trainee waitress gave me with the standard fries instead of the mashed potatoes I asked for. But she was new, spoke little English, and was cute so I let it slide) and calculated how too-big a tip I’d have to give my waiter AND his trainee.

Kathy and Adrian’s bill came and Adrian reached into his pocket and took out big roll of bills that turned out to be a single twenty surrounding a whole lot of ones. Where I come from there is an expression for this but I won’t indulge in needless slurs. Here, anyway.

About this time he pulled out his cell phone to show Kathy the wallpaper picture.
It was a squirrel.

Adrian peeled what might have been as many as three singles from his wad, left them on the table, and went to the counter to pay the bill. Kathy, after peeking behind her to see that Adrian couldn’t see, took a single from the tip and pocketed it.

I cannot make this up and I have the notes to prove it.

They left and we finished our diner.

Our Bill? $32.67.
The tip? $11.
Seeing Kathy and Adrian Grenier out together on a date? Priceless.

Any opportunity to feature Rhianna here on the pages of this blog, we will take it.

If there is no reason, then we will create it.In this case on Monday November 16, 2009, Rihanna performed at the Brixton Academy with star-studded guests including guest rappers Jay-Z and the Young Jeezy along for the ride.

Rhianna’s rider included a very comfy multi-coloured arm-chair. At 11pm, on the way out the driver hadn’t closed the trunk of the van and Rhianna’s luggage spilled out all over the road.

After the luggage was locked away, Rihanna and her entourage headed for some sushi at Nozomi.
