FEAST OF THE ENTRANCE INTO THE TEMPLE OF OUR MOST HOLY LADY THE THEOTOKOS

INTRODUCTION

The Feast of the Entrance into the Temple of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary is celebrated on November 21 each year. The Feast commemorates when as a young child, the Virgin Mary entered the Temple in Jerusalem.

INTRODUCTION

The birth and early life of the Virgin Mary is not recorded in the Gospels or other books of the New Testament, however this information can be found in a work dating from the second century known as the Book of James or Protevangelion.

When Mary was three years old, Joachim and Anna decided that the time had come to fulfill their promise and to offer her to the Lord. Joachim gathered the young girls of the neighborhood to form an escort, and he made them go in front of Mary, carrying torches. Captivated by the torches, the young child followed joyfully to the Temple, not once looking back at her parents nor weeping as she was parted from them.

The holy Virgin ran toward the Temple, overtaking her attendant maidens and threw herself into the arms of the High Priest Zacharias, who was waiting for her at the gate of the Temple with the elders. Zacharias blessed her saying, “It is in you that He has glorified your name in every generation. It is in you that He will reveal the Redemption that He has prepared for His people in the last days.”

Then, Zacharias brought the child into the Holy of Holies—a place where only the High Priest was permitted to enter once a year on the Day of Atonement. He placed her on the steps of the altar, and the grace of the Lord descended upon her. She arose and expressed her joy in a dance as wonder seized all who saw this happen.

The Virgin Mary dwelt in the Temple for nine years until, reaching an age for marriage, she was taken from the Temple by the priests and elders and entrusted to Joseph as the guardian of her virginity.

The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple signifies her total dedication to God and her readiness for her future vocation as the Mother of the Incarnate Lord. This is a feast of anticipation. As honor is shown to Mary, the faithful are called to look forward to the Incarnation of Christ, celebrated in a little more than a month by the Feast of the Nativity on December 25.

ICON OF THE FEAST

The icon of the feast tells the story of Mary’s entry into the Temple. The High Priest, Zacharias (1), is in his priestly robes standing on the step of the Temple. His arms are outstretched, ready to greet and receive the Virgin. Mary is shown as a small child, standing before Zacharias with her arms reaching up to him (2).

In some icons the young maidens (3) who served as her escort are depicted standing behind her. Also, we see her parents, Joachim and Anna (4), offering their child to God and His divine service.

In the upper center portion of the icon, the Virgin is seated on the steps of the Holy of Holies. An angel is there, attending to the one chosen by God to bring the Savior into the world.

ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CELEBRATION OF THE FEAST OF THE ENTRANCE OF THE THEOTOKOS

The Feast of the Entrance of the Theotokos is celebrated with the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom which is conducted on the morning of the Feast and preceded by a Matins (Orthros) service. A Great Vespers is conducted on the evening before the day of the Feast. Scripture readings for the Feast are the following: At Vespers: Exodus 40:1-5, 9-10, 16, 34-35 ; I Kings 7:51, 8:1, 3-4, 6-7, 9-11 ; Ezekiel 43:27—44:4 . At the Matins: Luke 1:39-49, 56 . At the Divine Liturgy: Hebrews 9:1-7 ; Luke 10:38-42; 11:27-28 .

HYMNS OF THE FEAST

Apolytikion (Fourth Tone)
Today is the prelude of God’s pleasure and the proclamation of man’s salvation. The Virgin is clearly made manifest in the temple of God and foretells Christ to all. Let us also cry out to her with mighty voice, “Hail, fulfillment of the Creator’s dispensation.”

Kontakion (Fourth Tone)
Today, the most pure temple of the Savior, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the sacred treasure of God, enters the house of the Lord, bringing the grace of the Divine Spirit. The Angels of God praise her. She is the heavenly tabernacle.

Cityscapes Outing - Camera Club of Ottawa

This Camera Club of Ottawa outing was on a foggy Sunday morning. The assignment was to shoot urban images in Black and White at 400 ISO within the boundaries of Wellington Street to Laurier Street and Bay Street to Elgin Street. We could submit 6 images in total. These were my shots. Click on the image to find it on my website and you find another link at the bottom of each image to view the colour equivalent. I had to convert from colour in photoshop since the Nikon D70 doesn’t have the capability to shoot B&W. I find it preferable to convert in photoshop anyway.

Last Sunday must have been my lucky day, because I found another interesting interior in The Old Town in a house on Österlånggatan, apparently undergoing renovation, so I took a shot through the glass in the front door. Not the best conditions to work under, but there are times when one simply has to compromise.

An apartment in The Old Town was for sale, so the front door was open for a change, enabling possible buyers to come in and have a look at it (before they call the bank and really try to get themselves in debt). This was an opportunity I just couldn’t miss, so I sneaked the lens in through the front door and took a couple of photos. As you can see, the atmosphere was fantastic; I strongly suspect the house was built in the 17th century. I have probably taken leave of my senses, but I don’t care because I want to do some kind of photo documentation of the entrances in The Old Town. The angles, the stairs worn by time, the dark and narrow places and so on. Flash on the camera? Nope, that would ruin it all!

I spend a lot of time in the Pet Society´s Gallery and Fan Art forums, it is amazing to see that we have so many talented players both when it comes to decorating their pets house in ways I certainly never thought was possible and in drawing their own pet or other pets.

I just thought I´d share some of these works with those of you who are not participating in our forums, as there are so many different and interesting things to see!

Let me start with Hop Hop Hoppity’s Art Gallery ★ – you can take a look at the whole thread by just clicking on the link. A lot of different art in this thread, I cannot include every piece, but I´ll reference a few of my favourites below.

While fan art is very popular, we also have the Gallery forum, where our players posts screenshots of their Pet Society rooms. I´ll reference some of the rooms that caught my eye while looking through the posts today.

Clara’s Dream House!! – in this thread what caught my eye was the fantastic bathroom. Now who would not want to have a view of Big Ben from their jacuzzi?

In ROMEO’S DREAM MANSiON. – there is some scary stuff to be seen!

If the backyard wasn´t scary enough by day:

then what about at night?? Very scary stuff!

In BUBBLE’s HAVEN, what caught my eye was the fantastic garden!

And every house needs and entrance, and what an entrance Bubble has into her house, I´d definetely come to visit!

I could not help to notice the thread My little gift for Oinky and Rhino – the image turned out a bit squashed below, but you can click on the link to view it in all it´s glory!

It is so fun to see that we are engaging so many talented and interesting people!

For such a small space, a foyer has a big job. As your family’s way station for coming and going, it needs to be high-functioning but low-maintenance. At least that’s the intention. The reality – well, you know what your entryway looks like. To the rescue: Lorie Marrero, professional organizer, mother of two, and founder of clutterdiet.com, who’s tidied everything from chemistry labs to touring performers’ equipment. Here, just in time for the annual arrival of holiday visitors, she shares her top tips for taming – and we share some easy tricks for transforming – the part of your home guests see first when they walk in the door.

1. Color correction

Choose a hue that says welcome: [A] buttery yellow on the vestibule walls creates a warm and inviting mood as you transition between outdoors and in.

2. Night light

Avoid fumbling for a light switch in the dark: Marrero recommends plugging an entryway lamp into a timer set to click on at dusk – so you and your family will be greeted by a cozily lit home

3. Priority mail

Limit the size of your in-bin, so you’ll have to sort through the stack of mail sooner, says Marrero. A basket with a one-week capacity prevents papers from piling up

4. Gracious greenery

Zampa Gateway is the main entrance of the Diu city wall. It is located between the gateway in the west and the huge fort in the east. Right inside the gate there is a very beautiful chapel built around AD1702. The artificial Zampa waterfall is one of the main attractions here. People who visit Daman and Diu will never miss the sight of Zampa Gateways. The history of Zampa Gateways traces back to medieval period. Filmmaker Richard Lucchesi, a Kyung Hee University English Professor wanted to know more about the Su-neung (수능), a test that everyone in Korea knows about, and that virtually all high school students have taken since 1993. It’s a university entrance exam, and is still the most common way to enter university in Korea. Offered once a year in November, as many as 600,000 high school seniors students sit for the exam each year. They traveled the streets of Seoul speaking to its residents about their experiences. This film is dedicated to the millions of people who have studied for and taken the Su-neung (수능) university entrance exam in Korea, and for those who have yet to do so.
