Qui D’Alessio canterà «Non riattaccare» da 6 come sei e poi ci saranno ovviamente le canzoni e Claudia Gerini. Ed a proposito della Gerini, chissà come sono le colonne sonore dei suoi film…

Buona visione… Su un’altra televisione musicale c’è Yo! dall’una alle due di notte che sarebbe dedicato all’r&b, al rap, all’hip hop ed al groove, Party Zone dalle due alle quattro (musica da discoteca?) e Chill Out Zone fino alle sei del mattino.

Domenica significa, invece, la Euro Top 20, la classifica dei venti brani più venduti in Europa, da mezzogiorno alle 13.30  ed i 10 Of The Best di Tiziano Ferro (peccato che abbia fatto sponsorizzare il suo tour da un’industria elettrica…) intorno alle sei del pomeriggio; Hitlist Italia all’incirca un’ora dopo; World Stage con il gruppo di qualche giorno prima (vedere sotto) ed il Superock dall’una di notte.

Fra tutti i programmi – “musicali” e non – vi consiglierei soprattutto Blu notte su Raitre alle 21.10 sulle navi scoperte sulle coste italiane con rifiuti tossici o radioattivi e su Rai4 il telefilm Battlestar Galactica che, intorno alle 21.45, si occupa anch’esso – a modo suo, narrativo, – di minaccia nucleare. Nel primo caso con il conduttore Carlo Lucarelli. Su All Music Playlist dalle nove di sera con Dolcenera, già vista su Sat2000, e poi Mono su Ben Harper dalle dieci di sera.

Baglioni e Venuti. Musica anche ad I migliori anni di Raiuno dalle 21.10, ma posso scrivervi ben poco sui cantanti. Peccato… Goran Kuzminac, I ricchi e poveri, Gerardina Trovato, i Tavares con «More Than a Woman» e poi… chissà. 16.11.08 Si concludono oggi gli Slany Jazz Days – musica jazz, blues, spiritual e gospel – in una cittadina (Slany appunto) della Repubblica Ceca, con il gruppo The Swings dalle 10.30 alle 12. Alle 17 concerto di chiusura per il Blues Alive di Sumperk, sempre in Repubblica ceca. L’esibizione comprende Limbo, Kulturní úderka, la Curtis Salgado Band e Wanda Johnson insieme alla Shrimp City Slim Blues Band. Suoneranno al Culture Centre Batory Chorzow per questo festival di folk, blues e probabilmente altra musica.

Took leave on Monday as well cos need to help my mum with the kids. Doctor advised that she cannot carry heavy stuffs for at least 5 days thus she will have problem bathing 3 kids.

Brought the kids down to play bubbles after their nap. Small little bubbles never fail to make kids happy.

On the way down, Chloe had a little accident with the lift. No one actually saw what happen, I immediately turn to see upon hearing her cry and saw her removing her hand from the lift door. My guess was that she wanted to hold on to the lift door while walking out, the door was still opening so her finger got trapped.

Luckily, it was nothing serious, only some abrasion on her forth and last finger, her last finger being the more “serious”one.

After cleaning her wound, I put on plaster on her last finger. Being the drama queen, she makes a fuss out of it. For the whole night, she does everything with her last finger sticking out. As if it will hurt very much if something touches the finger.

Ps. I always find Chloe’s hand very much like those dolls from Cabbage Patch Kids. The little dimples on the hand are just so cute!

My mum had her surgery today, to remove the lump in her hand. This surgery was postponed from last month. As usual, the whole gang took leave to look after the kids.

Our plan for the day is to bring Enya to KK hospital for her review, then to Forum Galleria to check out Julia Gabriel Centre and try to grab some Christmas presents at Toys ‘R’ Us.

Upon reaching Forum, we had lunch at Jade Palace for Dim Sum. I let Chloe ate by herself today; it’s her first time doing it outside.

Result consider not bad, she finished her lunch with some assistance. Only 10% of the food dropped into her bib and floor. Last time, about 50% were landed on the floor, 40% on the high chair and only 10% goes into her mouth.

We plan to switch school for both Kate & Chloe for them to try other stuffs. Have not decided which school we prefer. Since we were on leave, we took the opportunity check out Julia Gabriel Centre.

JGC’s environment is nice but the schedule for classes is not very suitable for me. They don’t have classes on Saturday for Chloe at Forum and they are having a long waiting list. The one at Evans Road is not very convenient for me in terms of location. Will have to see how we can work around the schedule or look for other alternatives.

Toys ‘R’ Us trip considered quite a success, I managed to get toys for Chloe & Enya (both getting puzzles) and chose the present for my bro & SIL to buy for Chloe. We already bought Kate’s present last week.  I still got 3 more presents to buy for my friend’s kids then I’m done for the Christmas shopping!

Impressed with Forum’s changing room. Love the brass tap and the wallpaper and lightings, makes the whole room feels so comfy. I like shopping malls with nice changing room, it’s an effort to show that they are family friendly.

Rebel Mc, taking a break from the Pop-Rap dirge of his Street Tuff era, joined forces with Barrington Levy and Tenor fly and dropped this breakbeat monster. Huge breakbeat and a cheeky clip of Enya mixed up with ragga lyrics from two absolutely legendary mc’s make this a firm favorite of mine.

Today I got up really early (5.30 am) after thinking all night “it must be just about time to get up” and realizing I still had hours left to sleep …

That’s what can happen when you get the chance to play in front of a lot of people!

I got all dressed in my eco best and headed over to Swedish Radio in Stockholm with my boyfriend Martin and his guitar. Tobias our drummer met us there.

We were asked to do an acoustic set so we decided to do “Nothing and All” because it sounds good acoustic and because the lyrics are purely the IVA mantra … getting underneath it all to find the truth. We got to the station early which gave me a chance to warm up (no caffeine for me this morning, the voice does not like it!) and then off we went into the studio. P4 is one of the major Swedish Radio stations, the nationalized radio that reaches many, many Swedes so I was very nervous, especially about speaking Swedish. Fortunately Anna-Karin our host got me through the interview and I was off to do what I do best .. sing. I had a little shaker egg this time to play while I sang and I’ve never performed with one before, and after forgetting about it many times in rehearsal I managed to get it right today! Nothing like live adrenaline. So now I can stand, sing, and play a shaker. Not bad, I think.

No it isn’t. If it was so fucking important you would answer it or employ more people to answer it. And come to think of it, why is it every time I call with a problem I have unfortunately chosen a period ‘of exceptionally high call volume’? Since when has 2.09am on a wet Monday night been the major time-highway of complaint? I tell you what I have determined it to be: Bullshit. It is a vain attempt to convince me that they in fact do run a competent customer service centre, but it is my fault for calling when I chose to. You can’t guilt-trip me Annoyingly Fake Happywoman, you are simply unprepared aren’t you?

I tell you what else is bullshit, when they go on to tell you your call is being monitored ‘for training and quality purposes’. No it’s not. They are far more concerned about making you think twice in being polite to the representative whilst hopefully scaring off some of the more paranoid callers.  Which poses the question- would you rather be put straight through to India where your question will inevitably end up misunderstood and remain untreated, or wait for an age but speak to a local guy who sounds like he remembers you from school?

As Enya plays in my ear I am absolutely certain of one thing. We cannot be in a real recession; all this furore around a 10% unemployment rate and it being the ‘worst crisis since the Great Depression’ is simply nonsense.

How? Well in 1929 there would be a queue of people twice around the block waiting on a slim hope of being hired to answer my fucking phone call.

Released as the lead single off her second studio album Watermark in October 1988, the song became Enya’s breakthrough hit, becoming a massive success worldwide, peaking at #1 in several countries including the UK, where it stayed at the top of the charts for 3 weeks.

The song is often incorrectly referred to as “Sail Away”, a phrase repeated during the chorus. The American version of the single, however, was retitled “Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)”. It peaked at #24 there in early 1989.

The song was highly popular in the early 1990s and was featured on many pop music compilations. It shares part of its name with Orinoco Studios (now Miloco Studios), where it was recorded. The division of syllables to follow the pattern of music may trick the listener into thinking that the song is written in Latin (as some Enya tracks are), but the lyrics are in fact English. At the end of the song she pays tribute to Warner Brothers Music UK CEO Rob Dickins and makes a more veiled reference to producer Ross Cullum.

You wouldn’t think a day that began with me jumping out of bed and cleaning my bathroom would produce a state of contented dreaminess, but that’s where I’m at now. After getting the bathroom disinfected and whitened again (grief, it needed it!), I was sweeping and realized I was humming. The radio in my head, which has the craziest assortment of songs, was playing Enya. Humorously enough, when I pulled up iTunes and told it to play all my Enya tracks, the song I was humming was “Lazy Days.” It’s from the album called “A Day Without Rain.” Guess what? It’s raining today!

Enya has been playing since, and I’ve cleaned and drank coffee and chatted with Carey from the softly fuzzed focus of a soul half in dreamland. It’s the kind of day where life seems possible, where I remember that we human beings are truly capable of transcending our circumstances. Indeed, I suppose we must. It’s not like all of who we are fit into bathrooms and dishes, into the trivia and chores of our lives. Even in bathrooms, dreams live. I listen to the music, I sing along, I listen to the rain hitting the roof, and I dream. I dream of beauty. I dream of glass. I think of the people I know, and I remember how important they are to me and how much I do love them. I hope they’ve found a moment today, too, to dream and remember.

Orchard Road’s Christmas lightings started yesterday so we kiasu-ly brought the kids to see after an early dinner at home.

Drove from Tanglin Road to Paragon. We just spent our time at Paragon, took photos, shopped abit then headed home, the kids were all tired as it’s way past their bedtime.

We plan to go there early for our next trip, probably spend half a day there so we can see the decorations in the various shopping malls.

I grew up landlocked and wary of what lurked under the dark, scum-covered surfaces of the few lakes/glorified ponds we had. If I can’t see the bottom, I’m not wading in.

However, a stretch of beach, preferably unpopulated, is a glorious thing. I think that a beach house would suit Paloma and me (and the menagerie) quite well. Fortunately, opportunity has presented itself and I am staking a claim to a stretch of prime beach for us now.

The downside is that it is in Ethiopia.

There is a thirty-file mile crack, as wide as twenty feet, in the deserts of Ethiopia. Geophysicists believe it will one day be an ocean. And oceans mean beaches and a beach is the ideal place for a beach house.

I would have to think that it’s a buyer’s market for real estate in Ethiopia.

(is there any part of that poor country that isn’t impoverished, famine-stricken, and/or at war?)

So, take a guess as to where the future beachfront property will be, purchase some land, and wait for Mother Nature and the “highly active volcanic boundaries along the edges of tectonic ocean plates” to work their magic.

I shall name our beach house Amity as homage to Chief Brody, Hooper, and Quint.

Of course, this ocean is scheduled to arrive in “a million years or so,” so that might be a problem.

Is there a more enduring hit from the ’80s than Toto’s Africa? It seems to have seeped into the collective consciousness of most of the planet, including that of a Slovenian a cappella group.

Juluka – Scatterlings of Africa

Juluka, a racially mixed South African band led by Johnny Clegg, was likely the first “world music” that I ever heard and, not surprisingly, it was courtesy of 97X playing Scatterlings of Africa.

Clegg and Juluka is a fascinating and inspiring story, certainly worthy of more than a few scant words here. The interracial make-up of the band and the politics of their songs put the members in jeopardy simply to perform in a South Africa divided by apartheid.

Zap Mama was formed in Belgium by Marie Daulne, who had been born in Zaire. Weeks after being born, her father was killed in that country’s civil unrest and her family fled into the forests, taking shelter with a tribe of pygmies, before heading to Europe.

Years later, she returned to Africa and studied pygmy vocal techniques which she incorporated into the music of Zap Mama.

Enya is like Bjork to me in that if news broke tomorrow that either one of them were actually aliens, I think I’d simply shrug and say, “Yeah, that makes sense.” There’s just something otherworldly about her.

I was surprised to realize that I have half a dozen of Enya’s albums. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to any of them all the way through and I couldn’t name more than a handful of her songs, but they’re like dreamy little interludes when they pop up on shuffle.

I have gotten a few complaints about the length of time that expired since my last post. So, I am attempting once again to write something of substance. I thought I would do a rant against the consumer industry pushing Thanksgiving into a smaller and smaller corner, while Halloween and specifically Christmas steal the limelight. (what is a limelight anyway?). However, I could not focus my thoughts (again) and come up with anything that was even interesting to yours truly. And I can’t say too much because I do listen to ‘winter’ music in November…right now actually. I would like to point out that there is a difference between Christmas music and Winter music. If you don’t believe me, look up “And Winter Came” by Enya on Amazon. I think of Christmas music as being the carols and songs we all associate with the Christmas season because of tradition. Like Carol of the Bells, Let it Snow, ect. Winter music is the genre that is associated with the winter season because of its makeup (yes that doesn’t sound right but I didn’t know the techincal name of what I was trying to say). Most ‘winter’ music is instrumental, and is not recognized as Christmas music. Its still saved for the cold months so its special, buts is not Christmas-y.

I hope that cleared up any misunderstand on the subject. If you get raked for listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving, merely tell them its is Winter music and if they care to understand the difference to visit happeningsofmylife.wordpress.com for more information. Unless of course you are listening to We Wish you a Merry Christmas. Then I can’t help you.

I promise you I have a more serious minded post coming. Its in the works, I just need to polish it off a bit. A large bit. Please have patience with my rambles, which probably make you feel as though you were caught in brambles. Oh dear. I will sign off now before anything else random and confusing comes out.

Saranno Giuliano Rassu, Marco Mengoni e le Yavanna a giocarsi la vittoria ad X Factor 3 ed il posto a Sanremo. Esce Silvio Barbieri da Treviglio detto Silver, 24 anni, dopo aver dimenticato per due settimane di fila il testo delle canzoni e dopo che gli hanno dato da cantare un inedito scialbo anzi che no (si veda sotto). Morgan batte Sony 2-0: ha demolito i pezzi inediti assegnati dallo staff (stavolta i capitani non c’entrano, nella scelta) ai suoi due cantanti ed ha pienamente ragione, sotto ne spieghiamo il perchè.

Si è lamentato che non lo fanno intervenire sugli inediti, gli rispondono che quando l’ha fatto (nella prima edizione) venne fuori l’allucinante “Chi” degli Aram Quartet, comunque vincitori.  Di sicuro, hanno dato il pezzo più debole al cantante più debole. Che infatti è uscito. Hanno dato il pezzo migliore all’unico avversario di Marco, che comunque vincerà perchè basta la sua voce. Probabile podio di consolazione alle Yavanna, con un pezzo medio con assonanze già note. Facciamo una scommessa? Nessuno di questi pezzi sfonderà. “Impossibile” di Becucci dell’anno scorso è una spanna e mezzo sopra tutti, per dire.

Passiamo  alle esecuzioni delle cover della semifinale. Tutti pezzi di alto livello, con Mara Maionchi che ha sparato altissimo assegnando addirittura Enya. Morgan punta su AC/DC e Velvet Underground. Più scontate le scelte di Claudia Mori. Cliccando sui titoli trovate gli originali dei pezzi meno noti (o meglio, di quelli i quali i titoli non vi dicono nulla, ma se ci cliccate su scoprirete che i pezzi li conoscete, eccome!).

YAVANNA (“Orinoco flow” di Enya e “Meravigliosa creatura” di Gianna Nannini poi La Vie en Rose di Edith Piaf/Grance Jones) – Su pezzi “pop” continuano a non convincerci più di tanto – il riferimento è al brano della Nannini – e questo, dovendo qui scegliere un artista pop non va a loro vantaggio (insomma: voi comprereste un loro disco? Io non so). Ma rispetto a Silver sono due spanne migliori vocalmente. Su Enya benissimo, il loro mondo è quello. Parecchio sofisticato ma di atmosfera (ma l’esecuzione solo voce e pianoforte su questo pezzo è come l’acqua minerale aperta dopo tre giorni). Velo pietoso sul completino a scacchi (calze comprese) delle tre figliole. Ottime al ballotaggio sul già sentito pezzo della Piaf in doppia versione. Le salva la Mori, giustamente.

GIULIANO RASSU (“Stand by me” di Ben E.King e “Quando” di Pino Daniele) - Dritto come un fuso a centropalco, come i cantanti degli anni’60. No, no, non va. Non diciamo che si debba agitare, ma almeno non stare li fermo. Il resto è nella norma. “Stand by me” è il suo pane e si sente. Sul pezzo di Pino Daniele fa 20 passi (record!). L’interpretazione di  “Quando” è ottima,  ma non ci emoziona, non lo ha mai fatto da quando è entrato. Con lui la Mori non ha mai rischiato, le piace vincere facile.E infatti va in finale (e rischia pure di insidiare Marco).

MARCO MENGONI (“Back in black” degli AC/DC e “Il cielo in una stanza” di Gino Paoli) - La solita macchina da musica. Divora tutto quello che gli danno, compreso l’heavy metal e lo ripropone con classe e stile (però va meglio su altre cose). L’arrangiamento vagamente jazzato su “Senza fine”, assegnato in corsa al posto del pezzo di Morgan è notevolissimo, sull’esecuzione ormai non c’è più nulla da dire. Presenza scenica superba. Se non vince X Factor è un delitto. Mostro assoluto. Va in finale. E tiferemo per lui.

SILVER (“Sunday morning” dei Velvet Underground e “Un piccolo aiuto” di Zucchero poi “Un’avventura” di Lucio Battisti) – Poco convicente vocalmente sul pezzo dei Velvet Underground, anche se la sua presenza scenica lo aiuta molto. Sul pezzo di Zucchero per una volta diamo ragione alla Mori, ci ha fatto sentire il timbro di voce, l’esecuzione solo col piano lo aiuta. Sicuramente è il più pop per gli standard moderni del termine, ma non è detto che sia del tutto una cosa positiva. Al ballottaggio si dimentica di nuovo le canzoni. Arrivederci, è stato un piacere.

INEDITI

YAVANNA – Una donna migliore (Anita Racca – Gaudi-Maiello)- Il problema è che l’inciso è esattamente una strofa di “Ricominciamo” di Adriano Pappalardo, anno 1979, precisamente il punto che dice “So come passi le notti è un tuo diritto io guardo e sto zitto ma penso di tutto”. No, Mara Maionchi, non sono armonie simili, in quel punto sembra proprio lo stesso pezzo! (questo non vuol dire che sia un plagio, l’abbiamo detto più volte, è solo la constatazione di una somiglianza nella melodia). Grandissimo arrangiamento, bella interpretazione. Nota bene: musica di Tony Maiello, quarto a X Factor prima edizione, prodotto da Mara Maionchi.  Allegria. Anita Racca è la mora delle Yavanna.

GIULIANO RASSU – Ruvido (Rassu-Calvetti-Zanotti) – Il pezzo che probabilmente lo manderà a giocarsi la vittoria finale con Marco, in maniera totalmente immeritata per il cammino percorso ma  guadagnata sul campo con questa esecuzione che spazza via tutto quello che si è detto di lui. Si agita per bene sul palco, come non aveva fatto mai e ci mette grinta. Il pezzo lo sente suo, è un  bel soul pop, parecchio radiofonico, coinvolgente. Entra nelle orecchie al primo ascolto e questo conta molto.

MARCO MENGONI – Dove si vola.- Scopriamo che questo era l’inedito che doveva essere di Chiara. E te credo. E’ senz’altro più adatto a lei che a lui che però come dice Morgan è talmente bravo che dà sapore anche all’elenco del telefono. Come Chiara. Che su questo pezzo avrebbe sfondato di sicuro. Su Marco è un pezzo carino, gradevole, parecchio radiofonico, ma niente che valorizzi le sue immense doti vocali. Si poteva fare immensamente meglio, invece gli stanno preparando la strada per Sanremo. Perchè vincerà lui X Factor e a Sanremo gli daranno una cosa così.  Elio, quarto giudice, travestito da Village People ha detto una cosa giusta: se Marco  lavora bene sulla sua voce può diventare il Mika italiano.

SILVER – Fuori c’è il sole (Barbieri- Cecere) – Quando l’artista stesso ti dice in diretta, dopo averlo cantato, che sto pezzo non gli piace, qualche dubbio dovrebbe venire. O no? Per carità, è una canzoncina leggera, anche carina in fondo. Però se questo deve essere il singolo d’esordio, francamente è imbarazzante. Andava bene come traccia 7 dell’album.  Anche perchè poi sembrava di vedere Gianni Morandi prima maniera. Si fischietta, ma è poco dirompente.  Lui già non ha una gran voce, se lo azzeri con un pezzo così fiacco in partenza, è finita. Il testo è sui livelli dell’inedito di Yuri l’anno scorso, lascia parecchio a desiderare. Cade dal palco come Jovanotti a Sanremo, comunque vada è di buon auspicio per la carriera…
