While driving home the other day, a thought popped into my head, just south of Fredericia, Denmark, that the usability that I am looking for, is what is required in your car; You are not supposed to be bothered by lumpy usability items such as knobs, buttons and whisles to get in your way.
Its a bit as described by James May testing the Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe: No need for driver input, adjustments etc. the car works as a butler, giving you what you need at the right time. Your connection to the web or your car, should work the same way. And is it possible to incorporate this technology into our cars, houses, clothes maybe, limitations by usability could, if handled correctly, be blown away!
Here comes EverOnline (EO) into the picture. Your car could take pictures of your drive around the countryside, and show them on your blog, og maybe on your OLED-wallpaper.

EO constantly strives to bring events to their members that will satisfy their “thirst for learning.” Recently, EO WNY hosted a couple’s communication retreat at Margie and Ken Blanchard’s farm house on Skaneateles Lake. (You heard correctly, THE Ken Blanchard, of The One Minute Manager.)

This event was like no other, and certainly a “once in a lifetime experience!” If you’ve ever heard Ken and Margie speak, or even followed Ken on Twitter, you know that just about everything they say is impactful, thought-provoking, and inspiring! This day was no exception. The main focus was on communication between partners. To start out, the concept of the ego was discussed. Margie shared a great way to realize when your ego is taking over. Whenever you feel “more than,” or “less than” anyone else or anything else, it’s your ego. Most of us think of ego as always talking about yourself too much and thinking you’re so great. But the ego has another dark side and that’s the self-doubting side. Whenever you tell yourself that you’re not smart enough, skinny enough, or don’t have enough money, that is also your ego. Remember the trigger, more than, or less than, and help yourself with a new awareness!

Another major focus of the day was working through conflicts. In theory, we all know that yelling and screaming gets us no where, but then we get caught up in the moment and our negative emotions and ego take over. Some tips from Margie and Ken for conflict resolution included having a heart-to-heart conversation developed by Layne and Paul Cutright (www.paulandlayne.com). The format goes like this: sit facing each other, holding hands. Each person gets a turn and when person A is talking, person B can only respond by saying one of three things; ‘Thank you’, ‘I understand’, or ‘Tell me more’. Person A starts by telling person B “Something I want you to know about me is…”, then person B shares. Next step, Person A tells person B “A concern I have is…”, then person B shares. In the last step, person A tells person B, “Something I really appreciate about you is…”, then person B shares. Another conflict resolution method is writing letters. This allows time to process emotions and not fly off the handle. You’ll find what’s really important and worth writing.

Every relationship needs structure. And if you can successfully create structure for your relationship that you both agree on and stick with, it will decrease your effort and increase your happiness! Ken and Margie shared some ideas for creating structure. They told the story of a couple who has a rule that when the wife comes home from work every night, she leaves her cell phone in the car between the hours of 6pm and 9pm because that is their family time. Another idea is date night. This is becoming more and more popular. The most important thing to making the structure work for your relationship is sticking to it. If you say that you will no longer work on the weekends because it’s family time, then do what you say you’re going to do.

As the retreat ended, it was obvious that the energy between each couple had shifted. There was more light and love surrounding the group and everyone left very motivated and happy. For more information about Margie and Ken Blanchard, visit their website: www.kenblanchard.com.

Vroeger zat ik op woensdagavond nog regelmatig op het puntje van mijn stoel fanatiek achter de televisie om voetballers aan te moedigen of uit te schelden. Tegenwoordig gebeurt dat alleen nog bij goede wielerwedstrijden. Maar gisteravond was weer een ouderwets woensdagavondje, want ik zat op het puntje van mijn stoel bij de zoektocht van Isolde en haar gesprekken met allerlei interessante christenen. Ik vond het prachtig om te zien hoe Isolde open stond voor wat gezegd werd en hoe ze zich ook liet aanspreken. Maar het absolute hoogtepunt was wat mij  betreft de opmerking van de non, na allerlei moeilijke vragen van Isolde: ‘ik ben ook geen deskundige, ik ben een liefhebber’. Daarmee vatte ze de hele boodschap voor rationalist Isolde samen: geloven is geen deskundigheid of onwankelbaar rigide weten, maar het is liefhebben en daarin je zekerheid vinden.

The BBC aired an informative and entertaining profile tonight of Warren Buffett, “The World’s Greatest Money Maker: Evan Davis meets Warren Buffett“, hopefully spreading his name to more Brits; the average person here has no idea who he is, despite him being wealthier than the GDP of half the World’s countries and usually coming top of the World’s rich list! When I met Evan Davis he mentioned that he had just 5 minutes with Buffett, but that’s not stopped him presenting a thorough profile and insight by combining research and interviews with others close to Buffett, including with Bill Gates.

Evan describes Buffett by saying:

“He really is different to the other super-rich… uniquely clever, funny and generous”.

This is the man that’s lived in the same house for the last 50 years, (currently worth around $700,000), on a regular street in Omaha in America’s mid-west and drives a beat up old car with the licence plate “THRIFTY”. I’ve been to the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting for the past two years, met both Warren Buffett and Bill Gates in the process and learnt a lot from the wisdom of Warren Buffett by reading his shareholder letters and attending the day-long Q&A at the gigantic stadium where the AGM is held.

Questions from the audience of around 30,000 attending what has become known as “Woodstock for capitalists” cover a wide range of topics including business, religion, the environment and tips for a successful life. Buffett is always interesting and frequently entertaining. The fellow attendees are all delighted to be there and I have met some wonderfully friendly Nebraskans who are all delighted at the influx of visitors in this weekend, the highlight of the Omaha calendar. If you are at all interested in business or investing I do recommend going at least once to this unique event. (See “how to attend” at the bottom of this article).

Buffett’s approach to investing in businesses is first and foremost about investing in things he understands, “stay within your circle of competence” and these guidelines:

• Businesses with a durable competitive advantage through a strong brand (protective moat)
• Management integrity, passion for the business and talent (doing business with people he likes, trusts and admires)
• Paying a sensible price for the business

At this year’s meeting he brought up that he doesn’t have either a calculator or a computer on his desk, quite simply, “if the calculation needs so much accuracy that you need to use a computer, then don’t invest”; it should be obvious whether a company is worth investing in or not. He further explained, the key to successful investing is strong emotional stability, not skill or high IQ; in fact it’s dangerous to be too smart! An IQ of 120 is just fine; anything above that and you’re too clever for your own good.

How to attend the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting:

Anyone can attend by one of two routes that I know of:

1. Becoming a shareholder in Berkshire Hathaway
2. If you are in business for yourself attend the Entrepreneurs’ Organization event which is held to coincide with the shareholder meeting. This year it included a behind the scenes tour at one of Berkshire’s businesses, the Nebraska Furniture Mart and a talk by Bob Prosen.

Chance of this happening / martial law due to “flu pandemic”? Probably really low on a national scale. Now on a local scale in “tester” cities… well… people… get your stuff in order now. The warnings don’t get any louder than this.

This is the 601 Oscuro in a robusto size “tronco” @ 5×52  ~ $9.00

The wrapper is chocolate brown with some veins, though the construction seems perfect. There is a triple cap and the cigar is firm to the touch. Prelight aroma is a mild woody chocolate with coffee notes.

The light-up brought loads of dark woody spice and black pepper. So spicy were the first few puffs that it seemed harsh. The flavor and body, which were both full and thick, were laden with dense bittersweet chocolate and spice. Some woody notes like tannin rich oak coat the palate. Some of the spice mellowed but mostly stuck around.

Coming through the first third and into the halfway mark the body builds to a thick, dense smoke of dark earthy flavors. The spice is a bit harsh through the nose.

The final stretch of the cigar was much the same as the rest. There was quite a kick of nicotine from this stick.

The burn was impeccable though not a very slow one. The ash was a beautiful white-gray color with thick bands that looked like mummy wrappings.

All-in-all it seemed a decent smoke though I am not sure they’re worth the high price tag.

Wat heb je als omroep, als journalistieke organisatie aan social media? Hoe ga je om met user generated content (USG); e-mails, foto’s en video’s van je lezers/bezoekers? Matthew Eltringham, Assistant Editor Interactivity bij BBC News, sprak er op 12 oktober over bij de Media Academie. Een verslag.

Back to basics met sociale media

“Social media zijn niet slechts gereedschappen voor een journalist, ze zijn de oceaan waarin je zwemt”, opende Eltringham zijn verhaal. Hij verwees naar het begin van zijn loopbaan als journalist bij een van de regioafdelingen van de BBC. “Het is terug naar af, terug naar het plaatselijke nieuws en de lokale figuren, alleen in een andere arena.”

Traditionale journalistiek toepassen op USG

Het team van Eltringham krijgt duizenden e-mails en foto’s per week. Maar hoe weet je dat berichten authentiek zijn? Verzint de inzender niet maar wat? “Is het echt?”, vraagt Eltringham zich af. “Is de content die je krijgt wel echt van het evenement waar het over gaat? Dan val je terug op traditionele journalistiek.”

Een mooi voorbeeld is een foto die BBC News binnenkreeg tijdens de bosbranden in de Engelse regio Dorset. In de eerste plaats lijkt de foto niet echt, maar hij is het wel. Maar deze streek is helemaal niet bergachtig, en bovendien zijn de dieren in het water elanden, en die zijn er niet in Dorset. De foto werd gemaakt in het nationaal park Bitterroot in Montana in de VS, in augustus 2000.

Focus aanbrengen in 12.000 mails, foto’s en video’s

De USG Hub van BBC News, waar Eltringham leiding aan geeft, begon als een pilot van 3 maanden, net voor de bomaanslagen in Londen. Nu bestaat het team uit 23 journalisten en komen er 10.000 e-mails (!) per dag en 1.200 foto’s en video’s per week binnen. “Hoe manage je dat nog?”, was een terechte vraag uit de zaal.

Eltringham: “Dat is niet makkelijk, niet alleen vanuit kostenoogpunt. In de 40% mails die we daadwerkelijk bekijken, focussen we op bepaalde verhalen, onderwerpen. We pikken de interessante cases eruit. Zoeken naar ‘accidental journalism’, mensen die toevallig bij een nieuwswaardig evenement betrokken zijn geraakt. En verder managen we vooral content, interactiviteit.”

Wat doet nu de BBC met sociale media?

De USG Hub gebruikt sociale media om:

• Nieuws te vergaren
• Betrokkenheid van het publiek te verhogen
• Content op meer manieren te delen
• Op nieuwe manieren journalistiek te bedrijven

Twitter gebruikt Eltringhams team voor:

• Breaking news
• Ooggetuigenverslagen, inclusief foto’s
• ‘Hash tags’ van actuele onderwerpen, bijvoorbeeld ‘#dsb’
• Opbouw van een ‘community’
• Expertise van het publiek

Hoe pakt de Beeb dat aan?

In elk geval niet zoals een journalist deed tijdens de bloedige schietpartij op Virginia Tech, in april 2007:

“Shoot me an email when you get the chance.”

Trefwoorden die Eltringham en zijn USG Hub hanteren voor sociale media en user generated content:

• Transparantie
  We maken duidelijk wie we zijn en wat we komen doen.
• Gelijk(waardig)heid
  Het is hun platform, dus we gaan in gesprek op hun voorwaarden.
• Geschiktheid/toepasselijkheid
  Welke meerwaarde bieden sociale media me bij een onderwerp?

Verder pakt de BBC het heel laagdrempelig aan:

• E-mailformulier onder webpagina’s om te reageren.
• E-mailadres waar mensen foto’s naar kunnen sturen.
• Voicemailbox om berichten achter te laten.

Zijn sociale media en USG de heilige graal?

Nee, zeker niet. Want lang niet iedereen doet mee:

• Liefst 72% van de Britten heeft nooit een bijdrage geleverd aan media.
• Slechts 4% heeft ooit aan een mediawebsite bijgedragen (maar dit zijn in het Verenigd Koninkrijk wel ruim 2,5 miljoen mensen).

Wel is een belangrijk aandachtspunt voor de kwaliteit van bijdragen dat het niet anoniem is: het levert aanzienlijk hogere kwaliteit op als mensen zich met naam, stem en gezicht bekend moeten maken.

Matthew Eltringham werkt sinds 1998 bij BBC News. Eerst als Planning Editor, later als Programme Editor, en sinds 5 jaar als Assistant Editor Interactivity. Hij leidt een team dat inmiddels school heeft gemaakt op het gebied van user generated content en social media. Eltringham en zij team wonnen bijvoorbeeld de New Media Award van de prestigieuze Royal Television Society voor hun verslaggeving van de overstromingen die het Verenigd Koninkrijk in 2006 troffen.
