“ Welcome to Japan, Mr. Bond…”

Hello everyone and welcome to the fifth installment in my series of reviews covering the James Bond film franchise. Tonight the movie we will be examining is 1967’s ‘You Only Live Twice’. First off, as always we will start by covering the principle information regarding the overall quality of the film and a few other incidentals. This was the fifth consecutive film in the series to feature the one and only Sean Connery in the role of secret agent James Bond. Up until now he was the only James Bond that most people had ever known and the role fit him like a well tailored suit. It may have begun to fit him a little too well in fact, as in this film you can clearly see at some points what appears to be a rather uninspired and somewhat bored performance coming from everyone’s favorite Scotsman. That’s not to say that it was a bad or boring performance by any means, as to even conjecture that that could be possible would be bordering on James Bond blasphemy to many; myself included. You could say that his boredom here was mostly forgivable as far as it related to the rather formulaic and lackluster material at hand, but my main point here is that if you were to compare the Sean Connery of this movie to the Sean Connery of From Russia With Love or the Sean Connery of Goldfinger you would see highlighted before you the absolute night and day difference between an actor that is clearly having fun and relishing his work and an actor who is simply putting in one more day at the office and cashing in a paycheck so to speak.

And while the plot was very formulaic and mechanical to be sure, as most every other Bond movie would be after this one and as the last few before this one had been, it was still a pretty solid set up all things considered, and provided the perfect base for Bond to play off of throughout, so in the end the issue of Connery’s ‘phoning it in’ here if I can use that phrase may boil down to nothing more than just him simply getting tired of having to be James Bond, as hard as that may be to imagine or accept for many people. All that being said though, this movie still packs quite the proverbial wallop in a few select places, and makes for more than adequate Saturday afternoon entertainment for any fan of classic 1960s popcorn action movies and spy flicks in general. It’s got all the usual wit, style, gadgets, and action, plus one of the best casts in the history of the franchise. I say that because I want to make sure I present a balanced perspective here, as even though I personally would probably consider this movie to be Sean Connery’s overall weakest effort in his original series of James Bond films, it is certainly not without its high points, and I would say for the most part anyway, it is a thoroughly watchable movie all the way through. Lastly, before moving onto the plot, this movie was the first from the noted Bond director Lewis Gilbert who in later years would give us two classic Roger Moore era Bond movies in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ and ‘Moonraker’..

Now as to that plot I was talking about in the above paragraphs. It involves this time around yet another scheme to start World War III by, surprise, surprise… good old S.P.E.C.T.R.E. This time their proposal involves launching their own space ship interceptor from their remote spot in the Sea of Japan to capture the recently launched ships of both the United States and the Soviet Union, knowing each nation will in the end blame each other, and that the ensuing political and public outrage will force one nation or the other to call for all out war. As this is all getting underway, British secret service decides they need a new way to protect their top agent. The method they choose is somewhat on the extreme side though. They have him killed. Sort of anyway, as in the beginning of this movie Bond fakes his death and is then reported murdered in a series of international newspaper headlines that float across the screen. This move serves the dual purpose of both getting those tiresome S.P.E.C.T.R.E assassins off his back and giving him the breathing room he will need to complete his most recent assignment, that being the location and interruption of the aforementioned plot to start a third world war between two international superpowers. So with that established, after a touching funeral procedure on board a large Navy vessel and a proper burial at see, Commander Bond is then brought on board a Royal Submarine and properly debriefed about his latest mission from Ms. Moneypenney and M before being whisked straight away to Japan.

Helping Bond along in this movie is a series of people involved in one way or another with Japanese special intelligence, the first being a man named Henderson who gives Bond some useful information when he first arrives, and the second and primary one being a man named Tiger Tanaka, who aside from heading up the Japanese secret service and having his own private underground subway train, also has his own ninja school. How cool is that? This is a guy with as much wit, refinement, and tactical support as Bond himself, and who will show up more than once just in the nick of time when it appears our hero is just about to be disposed of by the bad guys. James Bond and Tiger Tanaka enjoy a very gracious rapport with one another in this movie, exchanging various clever remarks and compliments at different times. Bond apparently respects Tanaka enough that when he gets the particulars of how to make his favorite alcoholic beverage mixed up (he commits what may be the one unpardonable sin in early Bond films in stirring rather than shaking Bond’s martini), Bond does not correct him. In the end Bond becomes so close with Tanaka and his gang that he undergoes a puzzling process to make himself look like one of them (for reasons of concealment you see), which involves stick on eye brows, a whacky wig, and *gasp* a full on chest wax. The site of Sean Connery in full on Asian costume for me was one of the low points of this movie, as he didn’t for one second appear to be anything other than Sean Connery, except that he was saddled with a ridiculous get up instead of his usual smooth tuxedo. If anything this move only made him stand out more rather than conceal his identity.

One of the huge strengths of ‘You Only Live Twice’ and my personal favorite element of it is the villains, provided here by the seedy Japanese industrialist and S.P.E.C.T.R.E affiliate Mr. Osato, and the man behind the majority of the plots of most of the previous Bond movies, who up until this movie was a nameless, faceless, leader of the aforementioned criminal enterprise known only as ‘Number One’, that being one Ernst Stavro Blofeld played here in all his bald headed glory by the late great Donald Pleasence. Mr. Osato makes for a completely acceptable secondary villain to Blofeld’s unquestioned supremacy. Blofeld though, deserves extra special mention here, as he was and is the very living epitome of what a good Bond villain should be. He’s super intelligent, crafty, but also hopelessly inept in certain areas as it relates to dealing with one agent Double O’ Seven. Donald Pleasence did such a memorable job here as the conniving scar faced super villain that his particular portrayal of the character in large part would eventually inspire the later Austin Powers franchise character of ‘Dr. Evil’ played with mocking affection by Mike Myers. Another plus here for our villain Blofeld in this film is that he is given a very elaborate secret location in an inactive underground volcano complete with working television sets, groovy retro furniture, and of course, a pool filled with several ravenous and insatiable man eating Piranhas. This secret lair is the location where our hero finally gets to meet his unseen tormentor of all the previous years gone by and also where the final battle between Blofeld’s forces and Tanaka’s highly trained ninja army will take place.

Now for the lighters issues, this movie is among the few I can think of where James Bond is not to be found behind the wheel of his trademark customized Aston Martin. However, it does somewhat make up for that by a very fun little sequence featuring another one of Q’s endless unique inventions, that being a miniature helicopter outfitted with more rockets, bombs, and other assorted weaponry than you would probably find on most fully sized modern day Apache Helicopters. Another fun piece of gadgetry here is a deadly cigarette that will give you a whole new perception on the issue of second hand smoke. For the Bond girls featured in this film, there are a plethora to choose from, most of them being of the Asian variety such as Ling who we find Bond with at the beginning of the film in Hong Kong shortly before he is ‘killed’, Aki, who assists Bond while he is in Japan, and finally Kissy who is with Bond in the latter stages of the film and is the girl he is given to in a sham marriage that seemed to me at least, a very odd and unnecessary element of the movie. Besides them there are also many other Oriental beauties who indulge Mr. Bond in a sponge bath at one point. Bond’s main ally at this point, Tiger Tanaka explains to Bond that in Japan “men come first, women second” to which Bond states “I may just retire to here” a line that would have caused the movie to be demonstrated against undoubtedly had it not been released in the era it was. That being said, the women in this film all sort of blend in with one another to the point of becoming almost indistinguishable. This is mainly due to a combination of having very little in the way of original dialogue given to them and secondly because of their similar appearances as well. The only girl who really stands out is red headed S.P.E.C.T.R.E assassin Helga Brandt, who is quite alluring and mischievous in the all too few scenes she is given in the film.

To finish off my review here and sum up what I said in the opening paragraphs, I’d say ‘You Only Live Twice’ is a very middle of the road James Bond movie. It has a couple aspects that make it stand out against the crowd for the committed Bond fanatic, but overall, it’s nowhere near either my top or bottom handful of movies in this series in terms of overall quality, although I have seen it placed among both of those categories by many different people during my research for this review. So with that said I think a three and one half star rating here is mostly appropriate. As for recommending this movie, I’ll put this one under the heading of ‘see it if it happens to be on television’ or if you should run across it on the cheap at a DVD or Blu-Ray store, especially if it comes loaded with lots of bonus features that is. That being said, if you are just a casual viewer, you certainly could find better or worse ways to kill two hours. If you are a major Bond fan however, this movie probably is essential viewing based on the unveiling of Blofeld alone, which is a major event for the franchise in that he will be the only Bond villain to be the main malevolent force behind and the focal point and face in front of three consecutive Bond movies. Climate Justice Activists Scale Didcot Power Station

Climate campaigners have this morning shut down N-Power’s flagship coal plant at Didcot in Oxforshire, and Shipley Open Cast Coal Mine in Derbyshire was shut down for several hours this morning.

The twenty peaceful protesters rode their push-bikes past security guards at 4.30am this morning before splitting into two groups. One team has shut down the giant coal conveyors which feed the boilers at the plant, while a second group of nine men and women has climbed the inside of the iconic 200m-high chimney and reached the top. They say they have enough food and water to stay in place for ‘weeks, not days’ – during which time the plant will be unable to operate. Already the activists in the chimney are securing the route behind them to ensure they can’t be reached by police and security guards.

Meanwhile…

Today 20 activists from Earth First! (1) stopped work at UK Coal’s opencast coal mine near Shipley (2), Derbyshire. The protesters entered the site at 9.20am and climbed on top of machinery, intending to stay as long as possible they are currently occupying 6 vehicles. This protest is part of a campaign to stop new coal mines and coal power stations in the UK. It follows hot on the heels of last week’s Climate Swoop at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, where coal from Shipley is burnt.

Shipley is one of over 30 new coal mines recently given the go ahead as part of the government’s drive to expand opencast coal mining in the UK. This is to secure coal supply for the 6 proposed new coal power stations. The mine at Shipley alone will provide 1 million tonnes of coal over the next four years, equivalent to the release of 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Liz Cartmel, a protester at the site said “We recognise the important role coal mining has played in the local economy in the past, but at a time where our future survival hangs in the balance we need to work towards a future without climate destroying coal. Our only way out of the climate crisis is to reduce consumption and to use renewable energies such as wind and solar.”

Climate Action Day

It was International Day of Climate Action in Point Reyes Station today and about 150 West Marinites convened on Third Street as Transition West Marin and West Marin Commons held a Climate Action Day Rally and Low-Carbon Faire, joining 350.org’s global campaign that totaled over 5200 actions in 181 countries.

People worldwide were taking this day to find creative ways to use the number 350 to express their demand for 350 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere as the safe upper limit to prevent irreversible climate change.

Here in Point Reyes Station, many rode their bikes to avoid carbon emissions from their cars.

Some rode their bikes from far, such as the Emissions=Zero Riders, traveling 14 miles from Bolinas to Point Reyes.

There were numerous hand-painted protest signs leaning against the building walls scribed with slogans like “Kick the oil habit” and “Our Climate is not your Business.” These were soon in the hands of a chanting crowd who marched down Main Street to the rhyme of “Three, five, oh…that’s what Obama needs to know!” and  “Don’t wait…until it’s too late!” to the Grandi building, through the Farmer’s Market, down to the bank and back to Third St.

According to Access Hollywood, actor Daniel Craig told fans that Bond 23 starts up in late 2010.

An extra year will probably help MGM sort out their current financial situation, also.

As of now, we know that Bond 23 is being written by  Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and Peter Morgan, who penned “The Queen” and “Frost/Nixon”. David Arnold will return to compose his sixth Bond film score. However, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have yet to announce a director.

This is good news. Perhaps it’ll give the Bond team a chance to develop a fresh story, with fresh characters. Maybe they’ll use the time wisely to seek out an experienced director, too.

Eines direkt vorweg: Ich schreibe diesen Text nicht in Auftrag eines Energie-Anbieters oder einer anderen Interessengruppe und erhalte auch kein Geld dafür. Der Beitrag ist lediglich als persönlicher Tipp zum Geldsparen und ggf. Umweltschutz zu verstehen.

Ich wohne im Großraum Darmstadt. In diesem Gebiet ist Entega der Strom-Grundversorger. Als ich hierher zog, wurde ich automatisch Vertragskunde. Nun hat man, irgendwo frisch eingezogen, in der Regel andere Sorgen, als sich unzählige Stromanbieter anzusehen. Also ließ ich das ganze zunächst laufen, auch als Entega im Dezember die Preise erhöhte.

Vor einiger Zeit habe ich mich dann intensiver mit Sparmöglichkeiten befasst. So kam ich auch auf das Thema Strom. Ich fragte in meinen Bekanntenkreis rum, wer Erfahrungen mit einem Anbieterwechsel gemacht habe, aber das waren nur sehr wenige. Auch deshalb entschied ich mich, über meine positiven Erfahrungen zu schreiben, um Leuten, die wie ich etwas unsicher sind, die Angst zu nehmen.

Es gibt ja die übelsten Vorstellungen, bis hin zur Befürchtung, ohne Strom da zu stehen. Das ist vollkommen unberechtigt. Der Wechsel verläuft nahtlos, den Stromzähler behält man auch. Letzterer ist zwar Besitz des örtlichen Versorgers, der ist jedoch verpflichtet, ihn bereitzustellen. Der Netzbetreiber (in der Regel der Grundversorger) ist auch nach einem Anbieterwechsel weiterhin für die Instandhaltung des Netzes verantwortlich, sprich muss mögliche Schäden an Stromnetz oder Zähler beheben.

Sollte der gewählte Anbieter seinen Pflichten nicht mehr nachkommen können, zum Beispiel, weil er Pleite geht, steht man trotzdem nicht im Dunkeln. Man würde in diesem Fall automatisch wieder beim Grundversorger Kunde sein (zunächst unter der sogenannten Ersatzversorgung). Wie man sieht: Passieren kann eigentlich nichts.

Anbietersuche
Sind diese Unsicherheiten und Zweifel ausgeräumt, kommt man natürlich zur Frage: Lohnt sich ein Wechsel und wie groß ist der Aufwand? Zunächst die Antwort auf letztgenannte Frage: Der Aufwand ist denkbar gering. Man füllt einen Vertrag beim neuen Anbieter aus (oft online möglich). Dafür sind nur wenige Daten notwendig. Den Rest macht der neue Anbieter, also auch die Kündigung beim alten Anbieter zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt. Dies muss (und sollte) man nicht selbst übernehmen!

Nun zur Frage, lohnt sich ein Wechsel: In den meisten Fällen ja, zumindest was den Tarif angeht! Denn die Anbieter wissen natürlich, dass viele zu faul für einen Anbieterwechsel sind, Angst davor haben, oder einfach zu wenig darüber wissen. Deshalb sind die Standard-Tarife, wie beispielsweise mein alter Entega-Tarif, meist deutlich überteuert. In meinen Fall lag der Preis pro Kilowattstunde bei 21,90 Cent. Zum Vergleich: Nun bezahle ich 19,90 Cent!

Also mein Tipp: Zunächst einen Blick auf die letzte Stromrechnung werfen (vor allem auf den Namen des aktuellen Tarifs) und danach ins Internet sehen. Im Netz gibt es verschiedene Dienste, bei denen man Strompreise vergleichen kann. Den derzeit vielleicht besten gibt es auf verivox.de.

Postleitzahl und Jahresverbrauch (zur Not geschätzt) eingegeben und vergleichen. Auf der nächsten Seite hat man dann direkt den Preisvergleich zur Standard-Versorgung. Ist man bereits bei einem anderen Anbieter oder hat man einen Spezial-Tarif, stellt man entsprechend um.

Die einzelnen Anbieter sollte man sich natürlich genauer ansehen, denn der Preis setzt sich aus Preis pro Kilowattstunde und einem Grundpreis zusammen. Je nachdem, wie konstant der Stromverbrauch ist, sollte man das besonders bedenken. Empfehlenswert ist es auch, auf möglichst lange Preisgarantien und natürlich die Vertragsdauer/Kündigungsfrist zu achten. Bei vielen Anbietern kann man jeden Monat aus dem Vertrag aussteigen, das bietet eine hohe Flexibilität, um bei Preiserhöhung wieder die Fliege zu machen. Bei Preiserhöhungen, für die nicht der Staat (also z.B. durch Steuererhöhungen) zuständig ist, kommt man in der Regel aber sowieso schnell wieder aus Verträgen raus! Auch empfehlenswert ist ein Blick auf die Kundenbewertungen.

Ökostrom
Für viele interessant ist auch die Zusammensetzung des Stroms. Denn ein Anbieterwechsel ermöglicht es nicht nur Geld zu sparen, sondern auch aktiv ein effektives Zeichen gegen Klimawandel und Atomenergie zu setzen. Grade die neusten Berichte über Machenschaften der Atomwirtschaft (hier und hier) dürften einen solchen Entschluss erhärten!

Wenn man an Strom aus erneuerbaren Energieträgern interessiert ist, sollte man auf jeden Fall einen unabhängigen Anbieter wählen. Zwar haben die meisten normalen Anbieter mittlerweile einen „Öko-Tarif“, aber der ändert nur selten etwas am Strommix. Der Grund ist denkbar einfach: Wird viel „Ökostrom“ verlangt, sinkt der Anteil erneuerbarer Energien im „Standard-Tarif“. Außerdem ist Ökostrom-Anbieter nicht gleich Ökostrom Anbieter. Natürlich kommt, egal welcher Anbieter oder Tarif, stets der gleiche Strom aus der Steckdose. Allerdings ist jeder Anbieter verpflichtet die Menge an Strom ins Netz zu speisen, die seine Kunden verbrauchen. In meinem Fall kommt der Strom faktisch vermutlich noch immer aus Entega-Kraftwerken. Aber mein neuer Anbieter (Naturstrom) muss so viel Strom wie ich verbrauche ins deutsche Netz speisen- und zwar im Fall meines Anbieters aus erneuerbaren Energiequellen.

Anbieterauswahl
Ich wählte also wie grade erwähnt Naturstrom als neuen Anbieter. Warum? Beim angesprochenen Preisvergleich stieß mir dieser Anbieter ins Auge, da er zum einen ein Ökostrom-Anbieter ist, zum anderen von verschiedenen Umweltverbänden empfohlen wird und zu guter Letzt auch unter den günstigsten Anbietern zu finden war. Die Mindestvertragslaufzeit beträgt einen Monat, die Kündigungsfrist sechs Wochen, sprich ich kann jeder Zeit sehr schnell wieder den Anbieter wechseln. Zudem gibt es aktuell eine Preisgarantie bis Dezember 2010. Meine gilt bis Juni 2010. Danach wird der Strompreis voraussichtlich steigen. Zumindest fand ich im Internet Erfahrungsberichte, wonach „Altkunden“ mehr zahlen müssen. Aber zum einen ist dieses „mehr“ immer noch weniger als ich beim alten Anbieter zahlte und zum anderen kann ich, wie eben erwähnt, sehr schnell zu einem anderen Anbieter wechseln.

All das zusammen hat mich überzeugt, zumal die Anbieter, die noch günstiger waren, teilweise keine Preisgarantie haben und/oder längere Mindestvertragslaufzeiten. Beides wäre mir zu unsicher gewesen. Zwei weitere Ökostromanbieter (Elektrizitätswerke Schönau und Lichtblick) haben aktuell ähnliche Konditionen wie Naturstrom, jedoch nur eine Preisgarantie bis Ende des Jahres. Die beiden werde ich also sicher im Auge behalten.

Der Wechsel
Ich füllte also auf der Homepage von Naturstrom den Vertag aus und bekam wenige Minuten später eine Bestätigungsmail. Einige Tage darauf bekam ich per Post eine weitere Bestätigung, zusammen mit meinen Vertragsdaten und dem voraussichtlichen Wechseldatum, welches knapp über einen Monat in der Ferne lag. Auch dass ich noch keinen vollständigen Jahresverbauch hatte, war kein Problem, verursachte aber ein, zwei Mails mehr, als wenn ich schon eine genaue Zahl hätte nennen können. Rechtzeitig vor dem Wechseltermin gab es einen weiterer Brief, in dem mir die Abschlagszahlungen beim neuen Anbieter bekannt gegeben wurden, die im Übrigen bei nur noch 25 € liegen (vorher zahlte ich 33 €). Nachdem ich vom örtlichen Netzbetreiber aufgefordert wurde, meinen Zählerstand (kostenlos) abzulesen dauerte es auch nicht lange und ich erhielt meine Abschlussrechnung beim alten Anbieter- und der Wechsel war komplett.

Fazit
Ein Stromanbieterwechsel lohnt sich in den meisten Fällen, denn viele bezahlen zu viel. Und wenn man darüber hinaus auch etwas für erneuerbare Energien tun will, ist ein Anbieterwechsel die vielleicht beste Möglichkeit dazu, zumal „Ökostrom“ nicht unbedingt teurer sein muss! Doch man sollte unbedingt nicht nur auf den Preis, sondern auch auf Preisgarantien und Vertragslaufzeiten achten. Dann kann eigentlich nichts mehr schiefgehen.

Ich hoffe, ich konnte den Lesern helfen und würde mich freuen, wenn ich einige dazu bewegen konnte, zu einen der Ökostrom-Anbieter (Naturstrom, Elektrizitätswerke Schönau, Lichtblick, Greenpeace Energy) zu wechseln. Gerne würde ich weitere Erfahrungen in den Kommentaren lesen!

Ich habe es noch nicht erwähnt, aber ich habe die Branche gewechselt. Jetzt bin ich kein Banker mehr, sondern versorge Europa mit Strom. Daher lerne ich gerade die Strombranche mit ihren Eigenarten kennen und versuche den einen oder anderen Sachverhalt hier darzustellen. Heute: Warum Wind den Atomstrom teurer macht.

Bekannterweise haben wir in Deutschland die Einspeisevergütung. Eine Sternstunde der deutschen Umweltpolitik. Ein Modell das so erfolgreich war, dass es laut Wikipedia von 47 Staaten übernommen wurde.

Die Regelung ist ganz einfach: Unabhängig vom Marktpreis erhält der Windkraftanlagenbesitzer 55 Euro (manchmal mehr) pro eingespeiste Megawattstunde. Für die anderen Stromproduzenten stellt dies ein Problem dar. Da die Menge des produzierten Stroms jederzeit der Menge des verbrauchten Stroms entsprechen muss und der verbrauchte Strom sich nicht erhöht nur weil gerade Wind weht, muss jemand anderes aufhören Strom zu produzieren.

Das ist im Prinzip ja auch genau das Ziel. Wenn Wind weht, dann können konventionelle Kraftwerke mal aufhören Brennstoffe (Gas, Kohle oder Uran) zu verbrauchen. Blöd nur, dass man ein Atomkraftwerk nicht einfach ausschalten kann. Es dauert runde 72 Stunden ein Atomkraftwerk wieder hoch zu fahren. Solange weht der Wind aber vielleicht gar nicht. Man kann ein Atomkraftwerk auch nur begrenzt runterregeln. Sinkt der produzierte Strom unter einen Schwellwert (ca. 80%), so bricht die Kettenreaktion ab und der Strom fällt auf Null, womit wir wieder bei den 72 Stunden wären.

Nun kann es passieren, dass mehr Strom in einer Regelzone produziert wird, als normalerweise verbraucht werden würde. Dann fällt der Strompreis und beim Strompreis ist da nicht bei Null Schluss. Der Strom muss verbraucht werden, dass will die Physik. So dass der Strompreis auch weit unter Null fallen kann, bis sich ein Verbraucher dafür findet. Letztes Wochenende bei den starken Winden an der Küste gab es einen neuen Minusrekord: Minus 500 Euro pro Megawattstunden (MWh). Der Netzbetreiber musste also den Windkraftanlage 55 Euro für die MWh zahlen und dann noch den Verbrauchern 500 Euro, um sie wieder loszuwerden. Ein teures Vergnügen. Und natürlich völlige Verschwendung. Wenn jemand 500 Euro für die Vernichtung von einer MWh bekommt, so hat er sie vermutlich nicht für etwas sinnvolles eingesetzt. Alle sinnvollen Verbraucher schlagen schon bei höheren Preisen zu.

Mit steigenden Windkraftinstallationen – es kommen bald die ganzen Offshore-Parks – wird die Produktion von Grundlaststrom damit unattraktiver. Und das gilt vor allem auch für Kernkraftwerke. Wenn die Versorgungssicherheit nicht gefährdet werden soll, dann müssen die Kraftwerke aber trotzdem betrieben werden, denn Wind ist nicht planbar. Also mehr Stromverschwendung wegen stark negativer Preise und die Kosten der Verschwendung landen beim Verbraucher.

Es gibt aber meiner Meinung nach einen Ausweg aus dem Dilemma: Nur weil in Deutschland viel Wind weht, ist das ja in Italien noch lange nicht so. Wenn die Verbindungskapazitäten zwischen allen europäischen Ländern ausgebaut werden, dann kann ein größerer Teil der Windunsicherheit aufgefangen werden, ohne dass gleich die Preise einbrechen. Dann kann man auch das eine oder andere Kraftwerk wirklich abschalten, weil irgendwo in Europa wohl immer Wind weht.

Aber auch hier ist ein Problem: Jede neue Hochspannungsleitung wird mit Klagen blockiert und geht daher sehr langsam. Dummerweise ausgerechnet auch von Umweltverbänden. Hier würde ich ein umdenken wünschen: Mehr Kabel sind gut für die Umwelt, denn dann kann man wirklich fossile Kraftwerke durch regenerative Quellen ersetzen.

Alles halb so wild? Ist die «Stromlücke», die uns die Stromkonzerne seit einigen Jahren einzureden versuchen, vielleicht gar nicht so schlimm? Der Verdacht keimt auf, wenn man das Communiqué der Kommission für Umwelt, Raumplanung und Energie des Ständerats über ihre Beratungen zu einer «Strategie für Grosskraftwerke» liest. Die Stromproduzenten, so heisst es in der Mitteilung vom 6. Oktober, erachteten «die Frage der Stromlücke und damit der Versorgungssicherheit als weniger dringlich als bisher angenommen und also auch den Bau von Gaskombikraftwerken».

Wie war das gleich noch mal? Hat nicht Alpiq-Chef Giovanni Leonardi schon vor drei Jahren in der «SonntagsZeitung» gewarnt, die bestehenden Kraftwerke könnten «die Nachfrage in Spitzenzeiten nur knapp und bald gar nicht mehr decken»? Erklärte nicht BKW-CEO Kurt Rohrbach Mitte 2008 im «SonntagsBlick», mit Stromausfällen müssten wir «jetzt schon rechnen»? Und stiess nicht Axpo-CEO Heinz Karrer vor knapp vier Monaten in der «Handelszeitung» noch einmal ins gleich Horn, als er drohte, schon im nächsten kalten Winter könnte der staatliche französische Energiekonzern EdF unter Umständen den Atomstrom-Hahn für eine gewisse Zeit abstellen?

Um es gleich vorwegzunehmen: Die Strombosse erachten die «Stromlücke» weiterhin als «unbestritten» (Karrers Mediensprecherin Anahid Rickmann), glauben, dass sie «weiterhin besteht» (Leonardi) und sehen «drastische Versorgungsengpässe» (Rohrbach). Das zeigt eine kurze Umfrage bei den Medienstellen.

Was auf den ersten Blick als Kehrwende erscheint, entpuppt sich demnach bei genauerem Hinsehen als argumentative Wegbereitung für etwas ganz anderes: Die AKW-Betreiber versuchen, das Terrain für eine Verlängerung der Laufzeiten ihrer Atommeiler zu ebnen. Die ständerätliche Kommission, so heisst es in deren Communiqué nämlich weiter, habe «mit Interesse» von der Einschätzung der Stromproduzenten Kenntnis genommen, «dass die ersten Kernkraftwerke nicht wie bis anhin angenommen 2020 vom Netz gehen sollen, sondern erst fünf Jahre später». Konkret: Beznau I (Inbetriebnahmen 1969), Beznau II (1971) und Mühleberg (1972) sollen noch länger als bisher kommuniziert in Betrieb bleiben – wobei bei Mühleberg der Entscheid für eine unbefristete Betriebsbewilligung über das Jahr 2012 hinaus noch nicht einmal gefällt ist.

Dass es sich durchaus lohnt, mit der Drohung einer «Stromlücke» eine Verlängerung der Laufzeiten zu erstreiten, zeigt eine Berechnung der Landesbank Baden-Würtemberg. Sie hat kürzlich gemäss der «Süddeutschen» errechnet, wie hoch die zusätzlichen Gewinne der drei AKW-Betreiber Eon, RWE und EnBW wären, könnten diese ihre 17 Nuklearmeiler zehn weitere Jahre laufen lassen. Das Resultat: 18 Milliarden Euro (rund 27 Milliarden Franken).
Wie sagte doch gleich der ehemalige deutsche Umweltminister Jürgen Trittin im Beobachter: «Alte Atomkraftwerke sind Gelddruckmaschinen.» Da wundert sich niemand mehr, wenn Schweizer AKW-Betreiber schon mal in der kleinen Kammer etwas antichambrieren.

Die FTD hatte heute einen netten Artikel zu möglichen Liquiditätsrisiken für die Industrie wegen den Derivatereform. Hier ist eine Äußerung zu E.On, die ich spannend fand.

Allein Europas größter Stromkonzern Eon bräuchte 7,5 Mrd. Euro an neuen Kreditlinien oder an Bargeld, sofern die Vorschläge der EU-Kommission umgesetzt würden. "Das wird eine große Wirkung haben. Wir sind über die Vorstöße sehr überrascht. Die Absicherung über Derivate ist ein alltägliches Geschäft", sagte Verena Volpert, Leiter Finanzen bei Eon, der Financial Times.

Man achte bitte darauf: ‘Die Absicherung über Derivate ist ein alltägliches Geschäft"‘. Die strengere Regeln sind dazu da, Risiken abzufangen. Diese Risiken werden offensichtlich für E.On im Moment auf 7,5 Milliarden Euro beziffert. E.On streitet diese Risiken nicht ab, aber argumentiert mit ‘Tagesgeschäft’. Zumindest stimmt da etwas nicht mit dem Marketing.

Warum geht es denn eigentlich?

Ein zentraler Baustein sind CCPs, die das Kontrahentenrisiko übernehmen und im Fall eines Zahlungsausfalls einstehen. Die amerikanischen und europäischen Vorschläge sehen vor, dass sämtliche standardisierte Derivatekontrakte über CCPs geschleust werden sollen.

Erst mal zum Akronym: ein CCP ist ein ‘Central Clearing Party’. Das heißt, dass jedes bilaterales Geschäft einen dritten Partner kriegt, der im Geschäft den Gegenüber für die finanzielle Abwicklung wird. Du lieferst mir zwar den Strom, aber das Geld zahle ich beim Clearing House, und das Clearing House überweist es Dir. Das Clearing House wird aber kein Risiko nehmen wollen. Dazu ist es wichtig, dass es meine ‘Position’ immer wieder los wird. Wenn ich also insolvent werde, muss das Clearinghouse den Strom sofort und ohne Verlust woanders loswerden können. Wenn die Marktpreise unter den vereinbarten Preis liegen, wird das schwierig. Deswegen wird das Clearinghouse von mir verlangen, dass ich den Unterschied zwischen Vertragswert und Marktwert plus noch eine ‘kleine’ Marge als Sicherheit hinterlege. Das ist im börslichen Terminhandel völlig normal. (Vgl. Kapittel 3 in diese EEX-Broschüre)

Und das Problem?

Die Industrie wähnt sich dadurch im Nachteil. Der Trend zur Standardisierung gefährde die Absicherung gegen Wechselkurs- und Rohstoffpreisschwankungen.

Wieso das denn?

Außerdem entstehe durch CCPs ein Liquiditätsrisiko, argumentieren die Unternehmen. Der Grund: Bei den zentralen Gegenparteien müssen Sicherheiten hinterlegt werden, deren Höhe sich nach dem Marktpreis der Derivate richtet und deshalb variiert.

Das Liquiditätsrisiko ist auch nachvollziehbar (Metallgeselschaft). Meine Frage wäre aber: wer trägt jetzt das Risiko? E.On scheint mir auch ein ‘too big to fail’. ‘Die Industrie’ will noch immer bestimmte Risiken nicht mit Kapital hinterlegen und damit auf den Steurzahler bauen. Spannend.

Parcul acopera o suprafata de circa 405 kilometri patrati si are o capacitate de 781,5 megawati. Investitia depaseste un miliard de dolari, potrivit Reuters.

“Finalizarea constructiei celui mai mare parc eolian din lume a necesitat investitii de peste un miliard de dolari, acorduri cu mai mult de 300 de propietari de terenuri si gestionarea unei forte de lucru de peste 500 de muncitori”, a declarat directorul executiv pentru America de Nord al E.ON Climate and Renewables, divizie a grupului german.

Complexul eolian are 627 de turbine fabricate de Mitsubishi, General Electric si Siemens.

Following the down-to-Earth, Fleming thriller, “For Your Eyes Only”, “Octopussy” seems to relax a bit, and reverts to the jolly, humorous Roger Moore Bond film style — but this time, in moderation.

The film starts off with some great espionage and action. James Bond uses a disguise to infiltrate an air base and plant a bomb. The plan ends up falling through, and Bond comes face to face with the man he’s imitating. After being captured, Bond is able to escape from the back of a military truck with the help of his attractive, fellow agent. Cleverly hidden within a horse trailer, Bond hops into his AcroStar Mini Jet and flies off — only to come into contact with some opposition. After dodging a heat-seeking missile, and performing some amazing stunts, Bond casually lands near a gas station. After pulling up, he lightheartedly says, “Fill her up, please.”

The characters in this film aren’t of the high quality of the characters in “For Your Eyes Only”, however, they work well with the material. I’ve never really been amazed by Louis Jourdan’s performance of the villain Kamal Khan. He certainly doesn’t rank up there with Wiseman’s Dr. No, or Sheybal’s Kronsteen, or even Savalas’ Blofeld. On the other hand, though, he’s not a terrible character. I just never found him to be menacing. On the other hand, Kabir Bedi’s performance (as Gobinda) was quite menacing; I consider him to be a henchman to match the might of Oddjob. I like how the character was taken rather seriously, instead of being turned into a joke like Jaws. Perhaps that’s what added so much menace to the character. The knife-throwing twins, Mischka and Grischska, and the power-hungry General Orlov held these similar characteristics. As far as allies go, Vijay was pretty standard. He wasn’t as amazing as Jack Lord’s Felix Leiter, but he wasn’t as terrible as, say, Rosie Carver. The Bond girls seemed standard to me, also. Maud Adams returned to play Octopussy — but, Bond’s been there and done that. Kristina Wayborn (Magda) played a minor Bond girl, but I seemed to think that she wasn’t much of an actress, and more so an object to please the average male viewers’ eyes. It was fun to see Q in the field, though, landing a hot-air balloon on top of some of Khan’s goons.

John Barry did a favorable job with the film’s score. Though, I don’t consider it to be as legendary as the scores to “You Only Live Twice” or “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, it still beats the hell out of Bill Conti’s dated, cheesy score to “For Your Eyes Only”. Rita Coolidge’s theme song was decent, also, but surely doesn’t match some of the classic themes of the series. Again, I prefer it to that annoying, sappy theme to “For Your Eyes Only”.

As far as locations go, India worked well in this film. The locations in Germany seemed grim, but worked well, also. The rest of the film tends to stay pretty serious, although we do get some ridiculous scenes that tend to take an audience out of “the moment”. For example, there’s a scene where Bond tells a tiger to “sit”, a scene where Bond swings across some vines and the Tarzan jungle-cry is heard, and then just plain-old cheesy lines like “That should keep you in curry for a few weeks”. Though Roger Moore was nearly 60-years-old at the time of the film’s release, he still held up pretty well, and looked pretty damn good.

Overall, the film is a laid-back successor of “For Your Eyes Only”. There are some scenes/aspects in which “Octopussy” tops “For Your Eyes Only”, but there are also some scenes/aspects in which “Octopussy” reverts back to the old, ridiculous nonsense that plagued Bond films like “Moonraker”. Roger Moore’s Bond era tend to catch a lot of harsh criticism, but sometimes for good reason. This film, however, doesn’t deserve any of that. It’s serious, yet fun. And most of all, it’s Bond. This is one of Moore’s best portrayals, I’d say.
