I’ve had this site up for quite a while and have been completely undecided about what to do for my first post. So I finally decided that I might just as well start with a current piece of art I’m working on. I’m really inspired by Charmaine Olivia’s art (independent artist from San Francisco) and the music I listen to which can be totally of the wall by top 40 standards. This is my current untitled work in progress. I’m a huge fan of Charmaine’s current set of paintings titled “Muses.” I’m trying to experiment with her technique, and I’m hoping that this painting will evolve into a study reflective Charmaine’s style. I’m not aware of many other genres of music employing this ‘technique’, if you can call it that and yet, rock and metal is riddled with it. In fact, there are certain genres (black metal for example) where it comes as a shock to the system when an album opens up with a blast beat or a shriek rather than a more soothing symphonic refrain courtesy of the resident keyboardist or, if the budget allows, a real orchestra.

But, the question remains – are instrumental intros, outros and interludes a waste of time or do they serve a genuine purpose?

The answer, as always, depends on the quality that is being offered. Some albums are rubbish and no amount of clever, atmospheric, challenging or downright weird pieces of music will save them. Sometimes, an instrumental piece will be an exercise in padding, to bulk out a shortfall in worthwhile material whilst others serve a better purpose, acting as introductions, bridges or narration to that very metal of inventions, the concept album.

Personally, if the piece of music is well-written and is not just a throw-away composition, I tend to be a fan of them. But, if they serve no logical purpose or if they simply don’t add anything of value to the album, I’d rather they were removed. For example, I don’t get those 20-second sections of noise that masquerade as an intro as they tend to start the album on a negative footing. Neither do I enjoy the inevitable disruption in flow when something similar pops up in the middle of a record. Nevertheless, as foibles go, I can generally cope with this one from the rock and metal scene.

But it wouldn’t be the same without a few examples, so here are a few of the best and worst that the scene has to offer in my opinion:

The bad

Type O Negative – I love Type O Negative. Not seeing them live is one of my biggest music-related regrets. And yet, their albums delight and annoy in equal measure. Both ‘Bloody Kisses’ and ‘October Rust’ are firm favourites of mine but both contain no less than three of these instrumental interludes, all of which are, in my opinion, an utter waste of time. Admittedly they don’t last long and are quickly forgotten but if that’s the case, what’s the point?

In the case of ‘Bloody Kisses’, the album opens with ‘Machine Screw’ which is comprised of a woman moaning over a backdrop of a whining industrial noise whilst ‘Fay Wray Come Out and Play’ is a minute-long chant with howling wolves in the background.

‘October Rust’ on the other hand, doesn’t offer listeners anything closely resembling a song until track three. The album opens with ‘Bad Ground’, 30 seconds of an indeciperable noise before leading into an untitled track which is the band thanking fans for buying the album. It’s a nice enough touch but I question it’s necessity on the album.

Kamelot – Another band that I have liked for many years but who fall foul of the ‘pointless intro and interlude’ category. Their otherwise fantastic album ‘Epica’ for example features no less than five instrumental interludes and I’m hard-pressed to understand any of them. The band and die-hard fans will perhaps argue that they maintain an ebb and flow to the album but the fact remains that none of them are memorable or particularly interesting and I could happily live without them. I liken them to annoying advert breaks in the middle of your favourite TV show.

But arguably worse than this are the three interludes within ‘The Black Halo’, none of which contain anything that I would call music. Instead they’re just film-like excerpts within the album. Only one word required: skip.

There are, no doubt, a ton of other examples of poor or unnecessary instrumentals but these two culprits immediately spring to mind

The good

Bal Sagoth – ‘Black Dragons Soar Above The Mountain Of Shadows’

If ever there was an instrumental opener designed to get the blood pumping, this is it. Performed exclusively by keyboards, this is pure sci-fi fantasy music. It could easily be the soundtrack to your favourite fantasy novel such is it’s pomposity and grandiosity – personally, I picture Sparhawk, the hero in David Eddings’ ‘The Elenium’ and ‘The Tamuli’ trilogies astride his trusty steed on the edge of a windswept cliff as I listen. But I digress…

The minute I heard this instrumental opening, I knew I was going to enjoy Bal Sagoth. It is completely in keeping with the excesses on display throughout the remainder of the album and therefore gives listeners an gentle insight into the barbarian metal that is to follow. A great album overall, opened up by a fantastic instrumental piece.

In Flames – The Jester’s Dance

In a slight change of pace, this instrumental does not open up ‘The Jester Race’, but instead sits in the track two position. This classic melodic death metal album begins with the brilliant ‘Moonshield’ before giving way to this beautiful two-minute instrumental. As mentioned in a previouds post, I discovered this album via a Spanish friend at University on a beaten-up old cassette tape. At first I was not sure about my first taste of melodic death metal. However, I loved this instrumental piece from the get-go and it gave me the incentive I needed to keep listening. Witout ‘The Jester Dance’ with it’s juxtaposition of sublime guitar melodies, galloping bass line and heavy riffing, I might not have got into this genre at the time and my musical development may have taken a completely different tack.

At The Gates – The Flames Of The End

What better way to round out a near-perfect and genre-defining album than with a sensational outro. With ‘Slaughter of the Soul’, At The Gates created what is regarded by many as the melodic death metal album, the album from which all else came and the one that is lauded as the creator of the melodic death metal scene now known as ‘The gothernburg sound’.

Aside from the massive opening track, it is the outro instrumental that I enjoy most on this album. The track builds wonderfully beginning with quietly and slowly, led initially by synths before being joined by a simple drum beat. And then, at the half-way mark, the guitars come in. First with a cool distorted riff and then all hell breaks loose. The riff continues but this time is overlaid with some awesome guitar feedback effects. It is a solo of sorts but all done through the medium of distortion feedback and it sounds epic. If you’ve never heard this instrumental, you’ve missed out.

Dimmu Borgir – Det nye riket

If I’m being honest, the debut album from one of the most well-known extreme metal bands was pretty average. The compositions are not that inspiring and, in terms of black metal, the music is very much in keeping with the genre at that time. The budget, as you’d expect from a debut album, must have been small as the production and artwork left a lot to be desired.

And yet, the album opens with one of the most memorable and fantastic instrumentals that I have in my ever-increasing collection. Spanning over five minutes, it is a relatively long opening salvo but it immediately grabbed me and I listen to it on a regular basis. In addition to the simple, slow-paced melodies and faux-orchestral synth work, what makes this track even more special is the spoken-word section towards the end. The Norwegian language has never sounded so mysterious and downright ominous.

De n-ar fi prietenii, s-ar prăbuși. Pas cu pas, ei o ajută să meargă mai departe. E ca într-un joc, îi vor spune ei şi o vor învăţa că este destul de puternică pentru a supravieţui.

Tammara Webber scrie o carte despre obsesie, punând-o sub lupă şi cântărindu-i bunele şi relele. Fiecare dintre personajele sale, atât de vii şi de colorate, are nişte demoni personali pe care trebuie să-i învingă, principalii vinovaţi pentru „greşeli” fiind: obişnuinţa care te face orb la realitate, dorinţa de a avea succes cu orice preţ, rivalitatea care calcă totul în picioare, ruşinea care te amuţeşte când ar trebui să strigi, neîncrederea că „de data asta” va fi altfel, va fi bine.

Cum iei cea mai bună decizie? E foarte uşor când iubeşti!

Pentru că, pe lângă tema violului – o fărădelege care lasă traume adânci şi totuşi, de regulă, este simplist expediată, bagatelizată, considerându-se că se poate „rezolva” la mica înţelegere între părţi şi mai ales, atât de adesea, aruncându-se vina asupra… victimei! – ţi se oferă una dintre cele mai frumoase poveşti de dragoste, captivantă prin descrierea scenelor de interacţiune între protagonişti unde, citind, te simţi deopotrivă intrus şi curios, şi fascinantă prin multiplele meandre, prin surprizele care se ţin lanţ, prin arta cu care scriitoarea ştie să te ţină cu sufletul la gură şi cu pumnii strânşi pentru personajele pe care le îndrăgeşti necondiţionat.

Se vi preoccupa il fatto che i ggiovani rendano onore a un ex Br invece che servire lo stato è perchè non avete capito bene una cosa. Bisogna rovesciare Kennedy. Così come oggi la situazione economica è rovesciata rispetto agli anni del boom. Non chiedetevi cosa possiamo dare al Nostro Paese, chiedetevi cosa il Nostro Paese ci ha dato.

Vogliamo parlare della disoccupazione giovanile?
Dei laureati choosy costretti a lavori umilissimi?
Del fatto che il 50% dei progetti di ricerca finanziati dalla UE a ricercatori italiani abbiano la base non in Italia ma in università e centri esteri?
Vogliamo parlare della precarietà? Dell’articolo 18 che è un diritto fondamentale inalienabile di ogni essere umano ma ai ggiovani non si applica?
Vogliamo parlare delle pensioni che verranno?

Vengono in mente le parole di “Grazie di tutto”, canzone degli Skruigners: ‘Grazie di quello che avete creato, grazie di quello che mi avete dato: niente’. Oggettivamente non c’è da stupirsi più di tanto se davanti a uno stato che non garantisce futuro e benessere ai propri cittadini, i cittadini guardino altrove: all’estero, all’ideologia, al crimine. E allora verrebbe da pensare che invece di chiudere i centri sociali sarebbe opportuno aprire una stagione di Politica (P maiuscola). Fatta di riforme, certo, di tante belle leggi e fantastici documenti programmatici su mercato del lavoro, innovazione, energie rinnovabili, cultura, ricerca, istruzione, sanità. Ma soprattutto l’anima. L’abbiamo dimenticata per troppo tempo. Questo paese ha bisogno di un’anima, di idee chiare e sogni possibili. I partiti dovrebbero tornare a dirci dove vogliono andare e soprattutto perchè. L’antipolitica e il rifiuto delle istituzioni non si combattono con i manganelli invocati in consiglio o con il “buon senso” di Beppe Grillo. Si vince solo se si riaprono le stanze del potere agli ideali, ai principi, ai valori che le persone portano con sè. Puntare in alto quindi, e non in basso.
Il resto è solo marketing.

The show took place at the Bluebird Theater on Colfax, the Colfax venue I’ve been to the most. Opening acts were System Divide (meh), Insomnium (awesome; their recorded stuff was very disappointing. Much better live) and Alestorm, a pirate metal band that was, for the most part, very fun. We were supposed to also get Destiny Potato for the first act, but either a.) we missed them or b.) they got cut out of this show since it was System Divide’s last on the tour.

In any case, fun times and I got to goth it out a little, which I haven’t been able to do since, geez, early college. Enjoy the pictures!

Widzisz, to jest najtrudniejsza część przydziału. Po wypiciu wody z Eletu, Alaurin przypominają sobie wszystkie winy oraz złe rzeczy, które uczynili, jednak tym razem widzą, słyszą oraz odczuwają je z perspektywy swoich ofiar. Tkając sny i wysyłając je do Daro Na, muszą dać znać tym, których skrzywdzili za życia, że tego żałują. Nikt ci nie pomoże. Nikomu na tobie nie zależy. Ademunidzi, którzy zawsze żyli między sobą i byli uczeni powstrzymywać emocje są teraz kompletnie bezradni. Wszelkie mechanizmy obronne jakie przyjęli za życia tutaj są bezużyteczne; ani władza, ani pieniądze ani logika nie pomogą im skonfrontować się z tą częścią ich samych, której nie chcą widzieć. Nie ma już wymówek. Nie ma oszustwa w otaczającej ich rzeczywistości. Już nie mogą udawać ani bawić się w życie. Muszą zacząć żyć naprawdę. Tak, dopiero po śmierci… Większość Ludzi zostało znakomicie wytresowanych przez swoje kultury i religie w sztuce oszukiwania samych siebie i noszenia najróżniejszych masek. Dlatego zazwyczaj zaczynają od zwlekania. Udają, że nie zrobili niczego poważnego i wypierają się swojego przydziału. Marnują w ten sposób mnóstwo czasu. [obraz młodego człowieka zatrzymującego się niedaleko Ogrodu] Ale w pewnym momencie egzystowanie w ten sposób staje się nieznośne. [obraz młodzieńca wchodzącego do Ogrodu]

[głos Kamila, obraz młodzieńca siedzącego w ogrodzie z zamkniętymi oczyma] Dlatego nie pozostaje im nic innego niż stawić czoła tej paskudnej istocie wewnątrz siebie i cierpieć z powodu ciężaru świadomości. Nie da się od tego uciec. Wszyscy w którymś momencie muszą to w końcu zrobić. [obraz młodzieńca, którego twarz jest wykrzywiona w bólu, a po policzkach płyną łzy] Wiedzą, że będą odczuwać ból, strach i upokorzenie stawiając się na miejscu osoby, którą skrzywdzili, ale to jedyny sposób na to by odzyskać pierwotny stan umysłu, jaki mieli Maná przed Rozdzieleniem. Ani pieniądze, ani władza, ani logika nie uleczą bólu. Tylko współczucie, zrozumienie i odpowiedzialność mogą to uczynić. Tylko uczucia stwarzają sny. Tylko sny tworzą ciało. [głos Kamila, obraz odlatującego ducha] I wtedy stają się wolni. Mądrość pokazała im swoje królestwo i zaprosiła na ucztę w swoim domu. Ale to, co uczynią ze swoją wolnością i zdobytą świadomością, to tylko i wyłącznie ich wybór.

Well, i was a big fan of Epica and of Simone but not anymore, since simone was racist to me and my friends at the venue well we just do not care about her anymore.
First as soon as we came in the room we noticed she gave those diva looks to everyone who got a signature and was leaving the place, she avoided contact with “non pale people“, she did stand up and took picture with the light skin people but never with someone darker, was too obvious! I mean,  she really gave this “i am superior” vibe to everyone in the place.
I heard that she avoids contact since she got that MSRA disease but… come on! Then she should not be on cars or planes because she could crash. Maybe she should not even cook because she could burn herself. Nobody ever asked to hug her or anything like that, people just wanted to take a nice picture with her by their side, but she didn’t even give a real smile to the cameras from the dark skin girls/guys. It is funny, i read about cultures and they say that Dutch hug a lot.
Still she checked her makeup just to make sure that she looked pretty when people was taking pictures from the other side of the table.
When we finally got to be in front of the table with the band on the other side, the guys were very nice, but when we reached simone…oh god…she looked like she just wanted to go away, she gave a lot of fake smiles and didn’t say a word to us or the people who was in front of us in the line. It got worse, then when we were leaving with our cds and posters signed, she said something in german, laugh and then she looked at a friend of mine from toe to head, i mean what the f*ck was that? should my friend buy expensive/fashion clothes so she can be nice to her or have respect?
I could not believe what happened, and when we went out of the venue, we heard many people saying how fucking diva she has become, we were not the only ones who got to live racism.

No one deserves to be treated like “useless stinky garbage”, and that is what she did to us. I have dignity and i regret paying that ticket, i could have bought a ticket for another band that actually cares about their fans. Anyway she doesn’t sing nice anymore so is not worth to go to their concerts anymore.
