Epsilon is incredible. On the one hand it’s an insult to the science fiction genre, limp unimaginative and cringe inducing, yet on the other it’s such a freak oddity that it will make your brain melt. As part of the 6 disc Rolf De Heer Collection (Umbrella), which encompasses his first six films, it combines some extraordinary images of sped up humanity, not unlike koyaanisqatsi, then jams it kicking and screaming into a ridiculous narrative about a superior (female) being (with a broad aussie accent) arriving on earth, encountering a good natured ocker outback bloke and debating the horrors of humanity before falling in love. It’s stilted cringe inducing death on celluloid. De Heer puts the duo in matching shirts and shoots it like it’s Neighbours. It makes you wonder how he could have been responsible for the dark wit of Bad Boy Bubby two years earlier, or even the understated beauty of Dingo (1991), which stars jazz legend Miles Davis, who you’d be positive hadn’t seen De Heer’s previous film when he signed on, the woeful 1987 outback horror Incident At Raven’s Gate. The only horror here is that they gave him money to make other films after this turkey. Yet that’s De Heer in a nutshell: hit and miss.

Wake in Fright (Madman) is a film about assimilation whether you like it or not. It’s Lost Weekend by way of Deliverance, except in the Australian outback the evil yokels don’t play banjo and make you squeal like a pig, no it’s much worse than that, they get you shit-faced and take you roo shooting. The residents of Bundanyabba are grinding down English primary teacher John Grant with bogan redneck Aussie hospitality, until he loses not only his smug superiority, but everything else he thought he stood for, descending into alcohol fueled oblivion. This is outback horror, the residents of ‘the Yabba,’ the equivalent of zombies clawing at Grant, trying to make him one of them. Made in 1971 it’s one of the most vicious and confronting Australian films around. The words “Is this your first time in the Yabba? So how’dya like the Yabba?” will chill your blood.

Samson and Delilah (Madman) is a love story without words. In the extras writer/director/cinematographer Warwick Thornton suggests at 14 he didn’t have Hannah Montana’s monologues, he threw stones at girls. It’s bleak, austere and set in an Aboriginal community in central Australia, not pulling any punches, particularly in terms of petrol sniffing. But it’s a different kind of love, one that is faced with much more difficult, gritty and harsh obstacles than your normal cinema affords. It’s a two disc set, the second features Thornton’s previous shorts and a great behind the scenes feature with the actor playing Samson participating in a diversionary youth justice group conference apologising for a burglary he committed a year earlier. Believe the hype.

He Ran All the Way is a classy 1951 noir that transcends the premise of a killer holed up with an innocent family and becomes a fascinating rumination on family and trust. It was a film tainted by the House Un American witch hunt in the 50’s. Soon after the director John Berry fled to France, it was star John Garfield’s last film dying at the age of 39 after much harassment from Mcarthy, and it was written by Dalton Trumbo (Spartacus) under an alias, in jail at the time of release for refusing to name names. It’s part of an excellent four disc box set MGM Film Noir (Aztec) that also includes Orson Welles patchy yet still compelling The Stranger with Edward G Robinson, Robert Wise’s classy heist gone wrong Odds Against Tomorrow with Shelly Winters, and hard man Robert Ryan, as well as the inspiration for Dragnet, He Walked by Night.

Bastardy (Siren) is a portrait of the complexity of Melbourne’s Jack Charles, actor, musician, heroin addict, homeless, thief, criminal, and member of the stolen generation amongst other things. He begins by shooting up, saying “If I hide anything it wouldn’t be a true depiction.” And what we get is the charm and ravaged potential of a man who justifies burglaries in Kew as ‘hunting and gathering on prime Aboriginal land’ starred in The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith and has battled drug addiction for thirty odd years. Seven years in the making, this is raw unflinching intimacy.

The Corporation is also pleased to announce that its first compressor is now operational and has reached its capacity of just over 6 Mmcf per day. The capacity of the first compressor has been achieved from the gas flow of four wells consisting of one short stage horizontal well, a one stage horizontal where the corporation is planning for additional frac stages, and two vertical wells. The Marcellus Shale wells in Pennsylvania are proving to be world class gas wells. At current prevailing natural gas prices of approximately $4.75 per Mcf, the compressor will generate revenues of approximately $10 million per year.

Emre Kelly

Audience members rose to their feet and exploded with applause when UCF junior Michael Newman accepted the title of Mr. UCF 2010, beating out nine other contestants in the annual scholarship pageant.

Students watched as 10 students dressed as zombies took the stage in the Pegasus Ballroom in the Student Union on Friday as they danced to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Newman, who won the judges’ favor and the audience popular vote, took home over $2,000 in scholarship awards courtesy of Student Government Association and the UCF Alumni Association. He said his main objective as Mr. UCF this year would be to spread awareness.

“I carry the world on my backpack,” Newman said as he performed a poem he found online called The Renditions of a Homeless Man for the talent competition. Newman dressed in layers of jackets and carried a sign that read: “Hungry any spare change helps please.”

“Students a lot of times feel disconnected from the community around us. Two miles down the road there are people that are homeless,” Newman said. “There are a lot of people that stay within the circle at UCF because they don’t really understand or realize what’s going on around us.”

Newman said during his interview that he wants to bridge that gap between the community, students and faculty, which he believes is part of the UCF Creed.

Newman is currently an ambassador on the President’s Leadership Council, the community service chair of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and a member of the Student Sustainability Alliance.

The pageant winner was not the only student heavily involved in campus and community activities vying for a shot at the Mr. UCF title. Spectacular Knight and Campus Activities Board Director Samantha Nemeroff said 15 students auditioned for the event, but only ten competed in the pageant.

“They represented UCF in a great way,” Nemeroff said. “They are all very involved in the school and the community. Their talents were impressive, too.”

Jonathan Parker sang the bluesy Porgy & Bess classic “Summertime.” Matthew Miller, clad in a glitter jacket and rhinestone glove, moonwalked to a version of “Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson. Marcus Williams dressed in a red and white checkerboard shirt, and performed a hip-hop line dancing routine to a music mix. James Jarman broke out the red vinyl records and turntables, scratched and spun a house and Latin mix.

Tyson Nales, Mr. UCF 2009, and Dasha Gonzalez, Miss UCF 2010, hosted the pageant with a panel of five judges. The bulk of the contestants’ scores came from the talent competition followed by their audition interview, formal wear, beachwear and a final on-stage question.

The scholarship pageant began in 1989 and benefits both students and the community. Sidney Porter, Sunshine Princess and Lake Highland student, donated a midback ponytail of hair to Locks of Love and the audience favorite vote raised $920 for Children’s Miracle Network.

SGA provided scholarship awards of $400 to the third runner-up, Warren Jackson, $650 to second runner-up, James Jarman, and $1,000 to first runner-up, Marcus Williams.

Additionally, Jonathan Parker won $500 in awards for nonfinalist best interview and top ad sales. David Cohn won $350 for nonfinalist best talent and David Yu won Mr. Congeniality and $150.

The pageant is open to all full-time male undergraduate and graduate students who hold a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Nemeroff said she can relax for a week before she begins planning for the Miss UCF pageant, with 25 girls set to compete for the title on Feb. 6, 2010.

Mr Nesamoney is the founder of Jivox and has had two prior successful ventures. The talk delivered under the Sparks New Ventures Program, a BITSAA-CEL initiative to help budding entrepreneurs, focused on market positioning, product sales, pricing and buzz generation.

(October 24, 2009) CEL(Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership) and Students Union organized a lecture by Mr. Jason George, a Harvard alumnus with work experience with McKinsey and World Bank. He was also the winner of the SGWoEA at the 33rd St. Gallen Symposium. Being of almost the same age group as the audience, his talk on “How to find and take advantage of opportunities” connected very well to them. “Life accelerates..” was a thoughtful statement put forth by him which stressed upon looking around for opportunities early on.

(October 24, 2009) It was very gracious of Mr. Chandra Bhople to deliver the III Business Plan Workshop for Epsilon-the intraBITS business plan competition organized by CEL. Having an immense experience in the field of technology and entrepreneurship, Mr Bhople had a very interactive session on “Fundamentals of a Business Plan”. Due to his simplicity of explanation, the participants for the 2010 edition of Epsilon, understood the otherwise tricky concepts involved in writing a Bplan.

With many more CEL, Sparks New Ventures, BITSAA and Embryo lectures lined up, “Entrepreneur” surely qualifies as the buzz word on campus currently.

There’s also a PV for Epsilon no Fune:

Here’s an example of what can be done with Emfatic and EuGENia. The following annotated Ecore metamodel can be used to create a nice Statechart graphical editor.

Here’s the emfatic source:

@namespace(
uri="http://www.cs.toronto.edu",
prefix="statechart")

package statechart;

@gmf.diagram(model.extension="sm", diagram.extension="smd")
class StateMachine{
val State[*] states;
val Transition[*] transitions;
}

abstract class State {
ref NormalState[0..1]#submachine parentState;
}

@gmf.node(label="name", label.icon="false", figure="rounded", border.color="0,0,0")
class NormalState extends State{
attr String[1] name;
@gmf.compartment(collapsible="true")
val State[*]#parentState submachine;
}

@gmf.node(label="name", label.icon="false", figure="ellipse", color="0,0,0", border.color="0,0,0", size="1,1")
class InitialState extends State{
attr String[1] name="start";
}
@gmf.node(label="name", label.icon="false", figure="rectangle", color="0,0,0", border.color="0,0,0", size="1,1")
class FinalState extends State{
attr String[1] name="end";
}

@gmf.link(label="name", source="start", target="end", target.decoration="arrow", color="0,0,0")
class Transition{
attr String[1] name;
ref State[1] start;
ref State[1] end;
}

The diagram of the resulting Ecore model is (click to enlarge):

And once EuGENia has done its magic (instructions here), the resulting editor looks like this (again, click to enlarge):

Moreover, we can add EVL constraints to the metamodel and validate the resulting models according to them. This is a fairly simple example, but it goes a long way to demonstrate how easy it is to create things like this.

This Is Not Art is coming up, and there is always heaps of awesome unofficial programming happening around town as well, so once again, the fine folks at the Noise Machine label are presenting This Is Not Part! This year the event has moved venues to The Croatian Wickham Sports Club, so hopefully we can avoid the fistfights and bad blood of last year. There’s a diverse mix of bands ranging from the pounding distorto-breakcore of Drillbit, the psychedelic space grunge of Go Genre Everything, the posi power violence of Michael Crafter, the whaley drone pop of Alps Of New South Wales, and the multi headed noise beast Rotted Crow who only ever play wheelchair accessible shows and will perform as the house band on the Friday Night.
It’s happening over two nights, with both shows starting at 7pm.

Working towards my MSc thesis, I’m increasingly engaging with the Model Management Tool Framew

Working towards my MSc thesis, I’m increasingly engaging with the Model Management Tool Framework (MMTF), an Eclipse-based tool framework for software model management, built by Rick Salay. At a glance, MMTF allows users to create macromodels (very roughly speaking, models that have other models as elements) in the form of “model interconnection diagrams” (MIDs). The elements of a MID are models of various types that are connected by model mappings (model mappings are models that describe how some other models are related).

As mentioned, the nodes/models in a MID are typed. For example, if we employ a MID to show how a particular UML class diagram is related to a particular UML sequence diagram, it would contain a node of type “UML class diagram” and a node of type “UML sequence diagram” and a mapping link between them (let’s not go into mapping types here). MMTF, being a framework, offers a way for users to plug in their own model types.

MMTF is built on top of the Eclipse line of model-related technologies (EMF, GMF, GEF etc). Therefore the notion of plugging in a new model type in practice means creating a new metamodel (using EMF), creating a graphical diagram editor for it (using GMF) and then plugging it in MMTF as an Eclipse plugin. Such model types, that require a new full-blown GMF graphical editor are called “heavy”, in contrast to “light model types”. Light types are what Qiyu Zhu spent this summer implementing. The idea is that heavy types already registered with MMTF (we already have for example good support for state machine models) can be constrained (presently using only OCL) to create useful model subtypes.

As GMF is not an easy monster to fight against, light model types are a very good step for MMTF. But useful as they are, heavy types still remain at the core, so anything that makes playing with GMF easier, is very good news indeed. I was therefore delighted to stumble upon EuGENia!

EuGENia, coupled with Emfatic can dramatically speed the creation of heavy model types. The user needs to create an ecore model using the simple DSL employed by Emfatic and then properly annotate it with GMF-related information. EuGENia then takes over the task of generating all the ugly GMF stuff. This might sound like a bunch, but compared to the plunging oneself into the dungeons of GMF, fighting graphical definition model dragons, mapping model balrogs and generator model orcs, EuGENia makes quite a pleasant journey!

In fact, EuGENia is part of a larger project, Epsilon, which in turn is part of the larger Generative Modeling Technologies research incubator project of Eclipse. Epsilon also has other interesting features apart from EuGENia, such as supporting model transformation, validation and merging.

REVIEW:

Alright, I am a big fan of SF but this one just didn’t live upto my expectations. Maybe this is actually a great book and I’m just a skeptic or perhaps I’ve read too many Asimov’s books to comprehend the “complexity” of the sci-fi space. In either case, other than hi-fi weaponry there wasn’t much to absorb in this set of novellas.

The only brilliant thing for me in this one was the phase of “Transenlightenment”. However that also seemed like something that Asimov had mentioned in his Foundation universe.

Read it if you are a fan. I’m not too keen for a re-read.

DESCRIPTION:

Centuries from now, humanity, as factional and fractious as ever, has spread throughout the solar system and beyond, to the worlds around the nearest stars. Technology means powerful new tools, but with those advances come lethal risks. The Demarchists and the Conjoiners fight wars over the basic right to augment human intelligence beyond its natural limits. The nervous, paranoid Ultras crew the vast lighthugger starships that bind these squabbling colonies together. The hyperpigs try to keep their heads down. The rich get richer … and everyone tries not to think about the worrying number of extinct alien civilizations that the explorers keep finding out beyond the margins of settled space … because who’s to say that humanity won’t be next?

Galactic North, a collection of eight novellas and short stories, three brand-new for this volume: eight harrowing glimpses into the dark and turbulnt universe of Revelation Space.

Alastair Reynolds, space opera’s current Janacek. — Telegraph

He has a genius for big-concept SF. — Publishers Weekly

Gothic SF with gore as Reynolds ensures his taut narratives grip from the first sentence. — SFX

Dark, gothic and graphic, with tightly composed narratives full of shocks and jaw-dropping moments. — BBC Focus

What is the most effective method and/or resource to procure a targeted listserv for a successful e-mail blast?

Susan, Vice President, Hoffmann & Associates, LLC

______________________________________________________________________

By Jennifer Manocchio

There are two ways to measure the success of an email campaign. First, how “healthy” is your list. If you receive a number of complaints (verbal or electronic), a high number of bounces and unsubscribes, your list needs a closer look. The most detrimental consequence of a bad list is your IP address getting blacklisted by an email client (AOL, AT&T, etc.) or an email distribution service shutting down your account.

Secondly, evaluating the open rate, click through rate and response to your call to action (e.g. sale, sign up form, registering for an event), will give you a good indication of your success. Benchmark open and click through rates are available; however, they vary by target audience and industry. Two recent reports are available to help you identify benchmarks by industry – MailerMailer and Epsilon.

Developing or Purchasing a List

There are a few methods, depending on your target audience, you can use to create a list.

1. Build your own: This is the most effective and safest way to communicate with your customers and prospects assuming that everyone on your list has given permission (either on your web site, in written form or verbally). Otherwise you can end up with complaints and high bounce and unsubscribe rates.

2. Purchase a list from a list company: Purchasing a list may seem like an easy way to target thousands of contacts. However, you need to ensure it is a credible company selling the list, the contacts on the list have opted-in and the company you are purchasing the list from will guarantee a high delivery rate (or provide a refund for outdated contacts). You also want to ensure the lists are for actual people, not addresses like info@sweeneypr.com.

You are certainly taking a risk purchasing a list and while list providers will assure you these contacts have “opted-in” they haven’t necessarily opted-in to receive information from you. Therefore, you risk complaints, high bounce rates, high unsubcribe rates, as well as low open and click through rates.

3. Use an existing e-newsletter list: Web sites that offer e-newsletters (like Web MD), trade associations, consumer and trade magazines typically allow you to pay for access to their email database. Most of these groups protect their members and will not sell you the list, but they will send a prepared email to their database and provide tracking reports. This method can be effective if the database is targeting your key prospects.

When using this method, consider a strategy (sign up form, etc.) that allows you to collect contact information and encourage recipients to opt-in to your email database. Otherwise, you will need to continue to pay for access each time.

Permission based email databases are always the most effective method. It will ensure you are not spamming, will increase your credibility among customers and prospects, increase loyalty and increase brand awareness.
