In 2011 Unbranded Generic Ink Cartridges are a real retail oddity.  I can only guess that generic ink cartridges are still a very confusing topic for a large percentage of customers.  I am continually amazed at the amount of retailers selling unbranded generic ink cartridges.  Equally amazing was a recent Choice Magazine article using a mix of manufacturers and retailers supplying branded and unbranded generic ink cartridges in a comparative costs study – in my opinion this showed a complete lack of understanding of the ink cartridge industry by the authors and for a large part was completely useless.  What if unbranded product ‘X’ was streets ahead of the rest – they would have to write ‘highly recommend product X but we have no idea what brand it is, where it came from, whats in it or if we’d even get it again should we place another order.’

Generally retailers selling unbranded ink cartridges will simply call them ‘compatible’ with no other information.  Incredibly they may not have a product image to go with it at all,  the image may be unbranded or worse an image of a genuine cartridge.  I think this is taking advantage of people that don’t know any better.  In some cases I have seen retailers using the image of a Genuine product but calling it compatible in the description – which should be illegal.  Some people just don’t realise that they haven’t been delivered the real thing.  Many people need pictures to feel comfortable they are getting what they want.  I even feel using the term ‘compatible’ is misleading as a genuine cartridge for your machine is also ‘compatible’ with your machine.  The proper term is ‘Generic.’

So why would they do it?  The bottom line is surely money.  There are high margins to be made selling generic cartridges – what could have cost less than $1 may sell for $10 or more with all sorts of quality claims.  There are obvious benefits to selling well known brand names, like brand recognition and the customer trust that comes with that but you are stuck with higher costs and having to compete with outher retailers that sell the same brand.  Quality, reliable products come at a price.  A retailer that does not sell branded generic cartridges will sell you what ever they can get cheapest at the time and they don’t have the same competition issues.  So many customers just don’t know any better and it’s common knowledge that people tend not to complain.  I wouldn’t tarnish my businesses image selling unbranded product but that’s the difference.  We care, we are looking to provide the best, we want to see you back again and again.

How many other types of product exist in the retail market place that have no brand name.  I really can’t think of any remotely important product that has no brand name.  Maybe I’m shopping at the wrong places but even our local $2 shop sells items displaying brand names.

I have to clarify that I am referring to online retailers that do not display or provide the manufacturers brand name of the product that they are selling.  In most cases they are supplying unmarked products – could have come from anywhere and have anything in them.  Sometimes you will get a branded product delivered but have no idea which one is coming or whether you will get it again.  What other industry could get away with this.

Firstly you need to know that there is alot of rubbish out there and buying unbranded ink cartridges is risky business.  The generic cartridge industry is still plagued by industry cowboys.  I get many emails every week, mainly from Chinese operations, offering incredibly low priced product.  It’s poor quality, will let you down with print quality and can damage your printer – if its unbranded how would you know what you are going to get?  It’s similar to buying unbranded oil for your car – incredibly foolish and in 2011 its almost unimaginable.  You need to able to rely on your cartridge and only branded products with a reputation to protect can offer this.  Cartridges are highly complex, technical products.  Poor quality cartridges may be ill fitting, can cause serious delays and irritation when they fail, cause permanent damage to your printhead and or printer and leak through your machine and on you.  Retailers selling unbranded ink cartridges are just taking advantage of peoples desire for a bargain and lack of understanding about the risks involved.

Secondly brand names are very important.  They promote competitive prices and quality through competition.  We need to encourage the use of brand names.  When a manufacturer puts their name to a product they are putting themselves under public scrutiny, allowing you to make informed decisions about their products.  Once a customer has tried their product they form a point of view about it and then they can easily tell others about it – good or bad.  This puts an enormous amountof pressure on manufacturers to produce goods that are good.  Should they be bad people will be able to identify and avoid their product in the future.  Should they be good they will enjoy the large sales and create customer loyalty.  If two retailers provide the same brand name they will compete for your business driving prices down.  Both of these benefits are lost without the use of brand names.

When you shop for a product look for well supported brand names.  Do some research and find a reliable brand thats been around awhile.  Then you can shop around comparing apples with apples and look for the best deal based on Service, Quality & Price.
