Die niederländische Softwareschmiede FabFilter hat wieder zugeschlagen! Diesmal mit dem parametrischen Equalizer-Plugin Pro-Q. Warum dieses geniale Plugin in keiner “Sammlung” fehlen darf, zeigt das folgende Review!

Der FabFilter Pro-Q

Oberfläche und Gestaltung

Pro-Q kommt im gewohnten FabFilter-Design. Ganz oben die Undo-/Redo-Buttons, der A/B- und der Copy-Button, sowie die Presetverwaltung. Anschließend folgt der Bereich fürs Auge, die Visualisierung der Frequenzbänder. Weiter unten sind dann noch einige Regler und Parameter gefolgt von weiteren Einstellungsmöglichkeiten, die sich in einer Leiste am unteren Rand befinden. Das Plugin hat einen schönen mattschwarzen Hintergrund, ansonsten ist der Equalizer sehr bunt um die einzelnen Frequenzbänder voneinander farblich zu unterscheiden.

Features und Klang

Im Vordergrund der FabFilter Plugins steht immer das besonders einfache Handling. So auch bei Pro-Q. Alles lässt sich bequem mit der Maus einstellen, die Regler werden eigentlich nur noch für ganz präzise Millimeterarbeiten benötigt. So lassen sich z.B. mit einem Rechtsklick der Maus auf die Pegelspitze des Frequenzbandes alle übrigen Parameter einstellen und sogar der Q-Faktor lässt sich mit Hilfe des Mausrades konfigurieren!!

Auch das gesamte Band lässt sich nach oben, unten, links oder rechts im “Koordinatensystem” bei gedrückter linker Maustaste verschieben.

Der Frequenzbereich von Pro-Q geht von 10Hz bis 30kHz, entspricht also nicht dem Standard der meisten EQs (20Hz bis 20kHz), sondern geht hier noch ein Stück weiter.
Der Gain-Wert lässt sich um bis zu 30dB vergrößern oder verkleinern und auch der Q-Faktor ist mit Werten von 0,025 bis 40 sehr komfortabel einstellbar!

Jedes einzelne Frequenzband lässt sich außerdem ganz einfach ausschalten (Bypass) oder gleich ganz löschen. Auch die Anzahl der gleichzeitigen Frequenzbänder ist enorm. Im Test habe ich bis zu 24(!) Bänder in eine Instanz von Pro-Q bekommen. Was natürlich übertrieben ist, aber es zeigt wie wie fein und präzise mit Pro-Q gearbeitet werden kann!

Auch das Editieren von mehreren Bändern gleichzeitig ist für das Equalizer-Plugin kein Problem. Einfach mit der Maus einen Rahmen um den gewünschten Bereich ziehen und anschließend ein Frequenzband nehmen und so die anderen mitbewegen!

Auf einige Besonderheiten die FabFilter in Pro-Q eingebaut hat, möchte ich an dieser Stelle auch noch kurz eingehen. Da wäre z.B. die Möglichkeit mit Hilfe des “Stereo Placement”-Buttons ein Frequenzband in den linken und rechten Kanal aufzusplitten. Außerdem ist da noch der eingebaute Spectrum-Analyzer, der das eingehende oder das ausgehende Audiosignal (nach der Bearbeitung mit Pro-Q) anzeigen kann. Auch die verschiedenen Filtertypen wie Tiefpass- und Hochpass sowie High Shelf und Low Shelf sind in Pro-Q auswählbar. (Mehr zu den Filtertypen findet ihr hier: delamar)

Das i-Tüpfelchen ist aber das Linear-Phase Processing, das man in fünf Stufen (Zero Latency, Linear Phase – Low Latency, Linear Phase – Medium Latency, Linear Phase – High Latency, Linear Phase – Maximum Latency) einstellen kann, um so auftretenden Phasenfehlern, die man ja vor allem den digitalen EQs nachsagt, entgegenzusteuern.

Fazit:

Die beiden Jungs von FabFilter haben mit ihrem neuen Plugin Pro-Q wieder einmal ganze Arbeit geleistet! Müsste man Pro-Q kurz zusammenfassen, kämen mir sofort folgende Wörter in den Sinn: Einfach, komfortabel und qualitativ absolut hochwertig!
Dafür spricht nicht nur das geniale Bedienkonzept oder das benutzerfreundliche, sofort durchschaubare Design des Plugins, sondern auch die Möglichkeiten die Pro-Q zu einem One-for-All-EQ machen!

Mein Tipp deshalb: Demo herunterladen, ausprobieren, begeistert sein!

Another bad run of unfortunate passings. I was really hoping the Ober story was a mistake, as it seemed to be this morning. But then MTV confirmed it.

"It's his basement, it's his rules, it's his game show..."

R.I.P. Ken Ober – I first encountered Ken Ober back in the early days of MTV, when it was actually strange for them to do something that didn’t involve music videos. The game show craze was making a comeback thanks to cable television’s insatiable thirst for content, and this oddball variation on a theme called Remote Control was an early hit for the network. Basically it was a trivia show designed to look like it was hosted in a suburban basement, with three contestants seated in recliners using remote control devices. It wasn’t so much the competition or even the subject matter (answering questions about television and pop culture)  but it was the way they were dismissed off the showwhen they lost that was classic! It also was my first exposure to the great Colin Quinn.

R.I.P. Edward Woodward, the Equalizer -  Thinking back, how odd was it to have a literate vigalante-for-hire show be a success? Then again, a careful look at the programs of the day proves how little we observe about life at the moment we’re wallowing in it. But here was an accredited Shakespearian actor playing a smarter Baretta and championing the underdog. I’m not minimizing Woodward’s massive resume, but Robert McCall struck a chord. Probably the same reason I enjoyed David Morse and Andre Braugher – two of the finest actors walking the planet – on Hack. (Although as far as I know, their characters didn’t purposely kill people. Nor did they have Robert Mitchum (!) step in to cover for them when they were out ill…)

R.I.P. Kevin Knox - I’ll pass this along as a third person reference, since I didn’t know him personally. But I have spoken with a lot of comedians over the years, and there is a fraternal bond for those who deserve it. By all accounts this was a righteous and unselfish guy as well as a good comedian. You learn a lot about people when they are down for the count with their backs against the wall, and apparently Kevin’s battle with cancer just reaffirmed what his friends in Boston and beyond knew all along. And to think of the dozens of times I walked past Dick’s Beantown Comedy Vault at Remington’s, right in the heart of the Emerson College campus, and I never got to see him. 

Life is short. Savor every moment. Enjoy every sandwich.

I was sad to read today that Edward Woodward died – he of the famous quizzical expression is no more.

He has a special place in my heart because watching re-runs of Callan with my older brother was a big treat each week when I was a tiddler – I could never follow what was going on and he would patiently explain. I remember thinking that he knew and understood everything about everything in the world although with hindsight I guess being 9 years older probably made it easy to give that impression to a silly little sister.

By the time The Equalizer came along I was older (but not much wiser) and I could watch without his help. Somehow it just wasn’t the same, although it was a great series and Woodward was perfect as Robert McCall, the oh-so-mysterious man of few words and all round good guy.

What I didn’t really catch on to at the time was the number of now famous people who starred in the series – Kevin Spacey, Adam Ant, Christian Slater, Lawrence Fishburne and John Goodman to name but a few. As if that isn’t enough the very cool and memorable theme tune was the work of Stuart Copeland, he of Police fame, alas always overshadowed by the much less cool Sting, but super-talented in my humble opinion.

Anyway Edward Woodward is a great loss to British telly and all I can hope is that eventually some programmer will see sense and run Callan again so that I can see if I get it now without my brother’s help.

Ora volevo segnalarvi qualche plugin interessante, che sfutta le qualità relative a questo nuovo standard. Questi sono utili in fase di mastering (compressori) e in fase di mixing (il riverbero è molto carino).

We’re big fans of 112dB’s Redline Reverb, as it brings a lush, musical sound to a saturated market. Now the 112dB has released an EQ, Redline Equalizer, and most impressively, it lives up to the high standard that the company has set for itself.

The centre panel is dominated by a large graphical interface, which also has a useful spectrum analyser option (albeit with a nearly invisible pale grey colour scheme). Below this are the main EQ controls, with a high- and low-cut at either end and five parametric bands in the middle, each offering a more than ample 24dB of cut or boost, with frequency ranging from 10Hz to 28kHz.

You can also set the gain character – ranging from soft to surgical – which affects the interaction between the Q setting and the gain level. This can be handy for gentle sound-altering duties, as opposed to, say, cutting a specific frequency. [read]

I made this 3D Equalizer in After Effects quite a few months ago. I think it’s quite cool!

Originally inspired by the great man they call “Gendi”, who gave me the idea of linking a linear wipe to a slider. I thought I’d take it further and build a fully functional EQ that will work with any soundtrack you throw at it. The camera motion is the only thing key-framed in this video. The EQ animation is driven from the audio track using a few different expressions.

To make this look even nicer you could use Trapcode Sound Keys. Also a short delay on each separate bar could be interesting.

Equalizer is a middleware parallel rendering system that allows applications to benefit from multiple graphic cards and processors.

Benefits for this project

It is open source and has a fairly active community, and Equalizer claims to be the standard middleware when it comes to parallel rendering.

Also, it has out-of-the-box support for some Virtual Reality-specific items:

• Active/Passive stereo rendering
• Head tracking for one or multiple observers

Furthermore it is stated to be both efficient and fast.

What does it work with?

There doesn’t seem to be any recorded cases of its successful use with Delta3D. However, it has been known to work with OpenSceneGraph (video) (google search), which is Delta3D’s underlying scene graph engine so it should work with Delta3D.

How does it work?

Equalizer executes the application’s rendering code in parallel on each GPU and computer used, to achieve optimal performance (thanks to Stefan Eilemann for pointing this out).

Project activity

The latest stable Equalizer release, 0.9, was released in August 2009. I therefore draw the conclusion that it is in active development.

I wanted to explain what I mean when I say run on a cluster of machines.

I want a solution where there is one server and N nodes talking to each other over Ethernet. The nodes are responsible for drawing one screen each and the server is responsible for synchronization and the I/O-devices.

There seems to be quite a few solutions that integrate with different scene graphs:

• Chromium
• Equalizer
• VR Juggler
• CaveUT, built on UT2004 and uses spectators. Doesn’t seem to be in active development.

Let it go on record that Gerald Joe Moreno has never (ever), at any time, used the name “sheila waring” on digg.com, netscape.com (now propeller.com) or anywhere else for that matter. Contrary to Robert Priddy’s senile claims (which he has been spewing all over his blog), Moreno never “denied” using the name “Equalizer” on his blogs. Once again, Robert Priddy makes unsupported, unsubstantiated and un-referenced claims against Moreno.

In an attempt to bolster their absurd claims that Moreno used the “sheila waring” pseudonym, several screencaps were published on Conny Larsson’s website. And thank goodness they did! After seeing the screencaps, Moreno nearly fell out of his chair laughing because Ex-Devotee’s apparently confused “sheila waring” as a Pro-Moreno Activist when in fact “sheila waring” was an Anti-Sai Activist hiding under a fake name! “Sheila Waring” went through all of Moreno’s posts on Netscape and “sunk” all of them (meaning that “sheilawaring” casted votes against all of Moreno’s articles). This is why Moreno’s articles showed up under “sheilawaring’s” Netscape history. One can clearly see the text saying “Sunk On July 09, 2007 07:49pm” below Moreno’s posts. One can also see the text that says “This story has mostly negative ratings” on top of Moreno’s posts with the number of “sinks” made against his articles. Critics used numerous fake names on Netscape to “sink” Moreno’s articles and all of their fake names were banned, including Robert Priddy, Barry Pittard and Brian Steel’s accounts.

What a bunch of pathetic and laughable stooges and loons!

Although Ex-Devotees whine and snivel about Moreno’s alleged “pseudonyms”, one will not find a single complaint from any of them about the numerous incognito web identities used by Robert Priddy, Sanjay Dadlani, Tony O’Clery, UsedByBaba, Barbara Dent and R.F.J. Sandt. Ex-Devotees even attempted to pass themselves off as various individuals (including Pro-Sai Activists and Moreno himself). This type of very disturbing online behavior has been fully documented by Moreno (Refs: 01 – 02).

Expect more spin, deflection and cover-ups from Ex-Devotees, who can’t even identify their own acts of subterfuge in action. Yes, this is exactly the type of shabby “research” and laughable “exposés” that Ex-Devotees typically peddle as the “irrefutable truth” to unsuspecting readers. They do the exact same thing in relation to Sathya Sai Baba as well.

Seit Windows 7 kann man die Widgets, die unter Vista noch in der Sidebar ihr Dasein fristeten frei auf dem Desktop platzieren. Das bewog mich dazu, sie mal wieder auszuprobieren, da ich die Anzeige von Systeminformationen sehr nützlich finde, mich aber störte, dass unter Vista immer der Platz an der Seite des Bildschirms gebraucht wurde.

Etwas, das mich an den Widgets immer noch nervt: es gibt zwar eine große Anzahl von diesen Minianwendungen, doch packt man sich vier oder fünf zusammen, sieht das Ganze kunterbunt aus und die wenigsten passen zueinander. So bin ich schließlich (wieder) bei Samurize gelandet, das ressourcenschonender ist und für das viele Konfigurationen existieren, die zueinander stimmig zusammengestellt wurden.

Jetzt wollte ich ein paar schicke heraussuchen und einen Artikel dazu schreiben, doch die Anzahl der “Configs” ist fast unüberschaubar und wenige funktionieren komplett, da die meisten an die Systeme angepasst sind, auf denen sie erstellt wurden. So benötigt man z.T. viele Zusatzprogramme, die den Rechner überwachen und deren Daten ausgelesen werden. Das wiederum stört mich, da es Ressourcen kostet.

Darum gibt es heute zwar doch einen kurzen Artikel zu Samurize, allerdings in abgespeckter Version.

Denn während ich in letzter Zeit viel arbeite und für die Uni lerne, lasse ich gern mal etwas Musik laufen. Und neben dem Hören will ich sie auch sehen. Dazu bietet Samurize ebenfalls einige Configs, die den Equalizer aus Winamp anzeigen.

Zwei der hübschesten (wie ich finde), sind:

BigEQspectrum (Quelle) und

Circular EQ (Quelle).

Richtig gut sehen die natürlich nur in Aktion aus und wirken kaum auf den Screenshots, also einfach mal herunter laden und selbst ausprobieren. Infos zur Installation und Anwendung finden sich jeweils in den beiligenden Text-Dateien.

1873 Colt Single Action Army (SAA) Revolver

You’ve no doubt seen them on TV westerns and on the big screen. They are such a part of our history and culture in the United States that a lot people probably hardly ever notice anymore. I’m talking about those revolvers. A large number of these are the legendary Colt Single Action Army revolvers. Easily the most famous pistol in all of American history. In 1873, the US Government was conducting tests on a new military service revolver. Having just come out of the age of the old percussion revolvers that used nitrated paper or linen cartridges and fulminate of mercury percussion caps, they were moving into the future of firearms technology by switching over to the new all-in-one self-contained cartridges that we are familiar with today. They did not really come into being until 1860, when Benjamin Tyler Henry perfected the invention of Daniel Wesson (yes, of Smith and Wesson fame) and put it to work in his wonderful new lever-action repeating rifle, which later came to be the legendary Winchester Rifle. Unlike the old percussion firearms, these could be used in any weather or conditions, and were more reliable and less prone to errors. What made things really work for the legendary Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolvers was the fact that the cartridges were compatible in both rifles and pistols, which certainly helped to launch Colt to great heights. The SAA is still made, and in demand as much as ever. A true working pistol that helped to “Win the West” and cleaned it up afterward. As an example, take a look the old Wild West, especially places like the old Arizona and New Mexico Territories. What used to be dangerous and lawless places are now much easier to live in, thanks to the taming of those territories. The Colt revolvers played a major part in that. Famous lawmen like William Barclay “Bat” Masterson and Wyatt Earp, soldiers like TE Lawrence (as in Lawrence of Arabia) were fond of the famous Colt revolvers. So were the outlaws such as William Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid.
