Okay, Rakim and Eric B was a great duo nobody comes close to them. The chemsitry between these two was something magical.  With Rakim at BB Kings yesterday and the release of his new album The Seventh Seal, I felt it was only right to give him props.  I have to say after listening to the new album… Eric B is missed. Rakim is not the same without Eric, and I can honestly say Eric B made Rakim, or at the least they made each other. No shots fired!!!  Enjoy… more videos after the jump.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to post this ish yesterday exactly one minute after it was posted!  Unfortunately my code-illiterate ass just couldn’t get it to embed.  Thankfully, as expected, someone Youtube‘d it and we’re back in business.

THE CYPHER

Yesterday the annual shamefest known as the BET hip-hop awards took place and well, as expected, it was a useless piece of goonery crap that only helped to ensure that those who don’t like hip-hop stay hating.  That being said, this award show has provided us with 1 good thing every year and it’s those damn (Rap nerd wet dreams -  ‘What if…’) Cyphers.  Last years dopest cypher featured Juelz Santana, Fabolous, Ace Hood (Who surprisingly rocked it even though he can’t write a song worth his life) and Jadakiss running a mean anchor.   Well, I’m happy to say that this years top cypher nearly made me wet myself.  And if it doesn’t make you at least kegal a couple dozen times, then you lied about one of the above questions.

No more talkin.  RAP!  This one’s gonna have people arguin for a while….

It seems like the thing to do these days for rappers in their mid-30’s is to find another rapper in their mid-30’s who roughly holds the same stature and combine to make a group.  Canibus and Keith Murray.  Del the Funky Homosapien and Tame One. DJ Quik and Kurupt. And even though it would seem like all of these would be dope, or at very least entertaining, only the Quik and Kurupt really popped for me (and I’m a Del fan to the core).  Well we have another pairing for you and this time, it might just work out.  2 people that have influenced a LOT of your favorite rappers but rarely ever get their mention, ladies and gents, I give you A & E (a.k.a. Masta Ace and Edo G.)

I received a Facebook wall request from an old friend who busted me for not putting up any Yo! MTV Raps clips up. She was right to do so. I searched and discovered that good clips are hard to come by. However, this one was easy. Therefore, here’s Eric B. & Rakim live on Yo! MTV Raps!

Rakim is arguably the greatest hip hop lyricist of all time.

I grew up listening to people like Super Cat, Luther Vandross, The O Jays, Run DMC, and of course Eric B and Rakim. “Paid in Full” is a classic album that opened my eyes to a rapper that was well beyond his time, and I loved it. This dude had swag like no other and repped it with songs like “I Ain’t No Joke”. While letting the mic smoke he gained credit from the listening public as being the hottest lyricist in the game. Yep, Rakim Allah the Microphone Fiend ripped us in the eighties and is now finally dropping that album slated to hit the stands in 2002, on September 15 of 09. The former title was “Oh My God”, the new headline is “The Seventh Seal”. Hey, I gotta say, the cat that rocked us continuously back in the day deserves our ear now. Cop the album and lets see if Ra, can keep throwing the revolutionary stuff at us. Peep the prognosis and get atcha boy! Peace and Light!

Often when you get into the debates with your homies over the dopest/most influtential emcees to ever salivate on the steel cage, Rakim Allah the Teflon Don tends to generally come up.

And while I won’t contest that the man is magnificent, his solo joints after his divorce from the First black President, Eric B. were underwhelming to say the least (even though 18th Letter was well received, I still think it’s predominantly phoned-in).

That being said, both 1997’s 18th Letter and 1999’s The Master had some dope joints on’em and well, being ‘No Country For Old Heads’ Thursday, I came across this rare remix of the 18th Letter’s first single, ‘Guess Who’s Back’ by D.I.T.C. in-house producer, Buckwild (who you also might know from his work with Kool G Rap – Fast Life, Organized Konfusion – Stress, Black Rob — Whoa!).

But before you get that….here’s a link to the original done by one of the most underrated contributors to the genre, Mr, ‘Brooklyn’s Finest’, Mr. ‘Get Money’, Dana Dane’s backbone, Clark Kent.  (PLUS one of the most bizarre videos I’ve ever seen.  Rakim getting his Salvador Dali on??)
