Essa com certeza é uma das músicas mais tristes já escritas na história da música moderna. Junte isso à um piano igualmente melancólico e a voz de Eric Carmen. Surpreendente. Carmen liderava uma banda chamada “Raspberries”, que fazia relativo sucesso com vários hits. A banda se desfez en 1975 e Eric lançou seu álbum de estréia, contendo a canção “All By Myself“.

A beleza desta canção é infindável. Carmen chegou até a incluir no meio de sua obra uma parte do “Concerto de Paino Nº2 em C (Dó) Menor” de Sergei Rachmaninoff, acreditando que a música estivesse em domínio público. Só esqueceram de avisar Eric que uma obra cai em domínio público mais ou menos 70 anos depois da morte do criador. Rachmaninoff morreu em 1943 (ou seja, nem hoje em dia estaria em domínio público).

Essa canção deve ser bem mais conhecia pela emocionada e poderosa interpretação de Celine Dion no seu álbum Falling into You, de 1996, conseguindo #4US e #6UK.

Ambas as versão são magníficas, um tesouro no mundo das power ballads e das músicas tristes e melancólicas…

A canção foi escrita pelo próprio Carmen (o que nos faz pensar que ele realmente sabe o que é solidão – talvez a separação do seu grupo Raspberries tenha inspirado a letra?). A produção ficou por conta de Carmen e Jimmy Ienner.

Guitar phenom Jennifer Batten has had quite a life.  She was chosen from over 100 Guitarists to perform along with Michael Jackson on his “Bad” Tour, “Dangerous” Tour and “HIStory” Tour.  She has also performed, toured and recorded with Jeff Beck, released solo albums, made instructional guitar videos and seen the world.

“A major turning point came when she was selected from over one hundred guitarists to play in Michael Jackson’s highly skilled band which toured the world for one and a half years playing for over four and a half million people.  Jennifer wasted no time after the” Bad” Tour’s grand finale, diving into work on her own album with renown producer (and Stevie Wonder guitarist) Michael Sembello…”

“…she was asked again to join Michael Jackson for his upcoming “Dangerous Tour“.  In January ‘93, she joined Jackson to partake in Superbowl XXVII’s half time entertainment which aired to one-and-one-half-billion people in 80 nations. It was the largest audience in television history.”

“She completed her second solo record “Jennifer Batten’s Tribal Rage~Momentum,” just before she was again asked to join Michael Jackson for his 2 year world tour supporting his double album “HIStory” in 1997.”

Jennifer Batten recently performed during the American Music Masters® Series tribute to Les Paul. The following is from the Rock Hall’s website article (http://www.rockhall.com/lespaulamm) regarding that concert:

“A tribute concert (for Les Paul) took place on Saturday November 15, (2008) at 8 pm at Playhouse Square’s State Theater.  The concert featured Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees James Burton, Duane Eddy, Billy Gibbons and the Ventures along with Jennifer Batten, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Eric Carmen, Dennis Coffey, Lenny Kaye, Steve Lukather, Barbara Lynn, Lonnie Mack, Katy Moffatt, Alannah Myles, Richie Sambora and Slash. Tickets for the tribute concert sold out.”

Raspberries are a power pop/pop rock band from Cleveland, Ohio in the United States. They had a run of success in the 1970s music scene with their crisp pop sound, which Allmusic later described as featuring “exquisitely crafted melodies and achingly gorgeous harmonies.” The members were known for their clean-cut public image, with short-hair and matching suits, which brought them teenybopper attention as well as scorn from some mainstream media outlets as ‘uncool’. The group drew influence from the British Invasion era — especially The Beatles, The Who, The Hollies, and The Small Faces — and its mod sensibility. In both the U.S. and the U.K., the Raspberries helped pioneer the power pop music style that took off after the group disbanded.

The group’s orginal lineup consisted of Eric Carmen (vocalist/guitarist/bassist), Wally Bryson (guitarist), Jim Bonfanti (drummer), and Dave Smalley (guitarist/bassist).

Their best known songs include “Go All The Way“, “Let’s Pretend”, “I Wanna Be With You”, “Tonight”, and “Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)”.

Producer Jimmy Ienner was responsible for all the Raspberries’ albums in the 1970s, which often attempted to replicate Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” production techniques.

The group broke up in 1975 after a five year run, and Eric Carmen proceeded to a successful career as a solo artist. Bryson and Smalley resurrected the group’s name in 2000 and continue to tour,taking in indie pop singer/songwriter Scott McCarl working as the vocalist.

73. Prince – Raspberry Beret [3:33] [time remaining 729.16] (Drop Io) (Alt Link)

I’ve always had a strange relationship with Prince, not personally of course, but musically. Some of his material I love to the point of obsession and some tends to make me cringe to the point of hitting skip on the controller so viciously I risk damage. This may be due to my musical taste throughout the 80’s being so clearly influenced by what my parents were listening to (and in turn forcing me to). From what I can tell, my Dad has quite a love/hate relationship with him also. Because of this, I blame him for my confused feelings towards his back catalogue. There are a number of tracks by Prince that I could include in this list and I may still…but for now I’m going to stick with a track that always makes me smile and that I will not play an 80’s set without including.

This choice is pure self indulgent cheese, without question. I don’t remember exactly how old I was when I saw Dirty Dancing for the first time, but I remember where and with whom. Whenever my parents went out in the evening they would drop me round at their friends house and although these friends were very close to my parents, I know that my mother, being the faux snob that she is, didn’t particularly approve of how they brought up their kids. This judgement was only heightened when she came to pick me up one evening to find that their children and I had been watching it. I however, was hooked and love it still to this day. This song choice will make alot of people cringe I’m sure, but hopefully alot will also share the brilliant 80’s nostalgia.

75. The Primitives – Crash [3:14] [time remaining 721:54] (Drop Io) (Alt Link YSI)

As the previous two choices for today’s entry are 80’s orientated and real guilty pleasures, I may aswell continue down the same route. Despite its title and lyrics, I love driving to this song. This is one of the most upbeat and catchy tracks I’ve ever come across and for that reason alone, it needs to be included. As a sidenote, when that idiot from Busted covered this a couple of years back, I wanted to bust his face even more than I did before. Some things are sacred, somebody tell him that please?

I read recently that there are plans afoot to remake Dirty Dancing.

How, how, HOW can they even think of such a thing? I mean, I know it is confirmation of my old-fogey status that I am lamenting today’s kids messing with a classic from my youth, but is the original not a PERFECT MOVIE? I mean, terrible, of course, but PERFECTLY SO.

My first thought was of the Swayze, and how anyone could even consider kicking a dude while he’s down. What else does the Swayze have, friends, aside from DD?

I then was horrified by the suggestion that Miley Cyrus might play Baby. And then I wondered, did people in the late eighties think Jennifer Grey was a big an overrated, talentless trainwreck-in-waiting as we (I) do Miley Cyrus? Am I such an old fogey that I just can’t see what the kids today love about MC? Or is it–as it seems to me–a genuine travesty that JG’s signature role, played oh so perfectly, should be taken over by this moronic, contrived, brand-name twit?

I’m sticking with that. MC makes me want to vomit. I’ve got you in my sights, Miley, but my eyes ain’t hungry.

Please, please, please, Hollywood: This is my dance space. This is your dance space. Leave Dirty Dancing alone.

PS: This is really a whole ‘nother post, but OMG remember what a huge deal Dirty Dancing was when it came out? I think I actually missed it in the theater, but I spent the summer of 1988 watching it over and over and over and over while babysitting. And the soundtrack! Those songs were everywhere! Oh my goodness.

PPS: For a good time, look up the lyrics to Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes.” Deathless verse, it is not.

PPPS: I used to work at a college whose alma mater was set to that generic alma mater tune, to which the Kellerman’s theme song (sung at the talent show at the end) is also set. That used to give me church giggles on a not infrequent basis. Totally inappro.

PPPPS: Do you think it’s a mistake to disparage the Miley Cyrus? She probably has a crack team paid to scan the blogs and put the smackdown on any non-believers. Oops. I take it all back, Miley! I’m sure you are VERY TALENTED. AND CLASSY.

Good day to you. Weather is a little bit calmer today…had a few real doozies roll through here yesterday while trying to add a post. And I always shut down and unplug (and cower in the closet) when there’s thunder and lightning in the area. Great song by Chi Coltrane, but there are regularly close “hits” during these t-storms, and don’t like to take any chances. Plus, internet/cable/electric all going on and off throughout the storms. All’interno del film “il diario di Bridget Jones” la protagonista la cantava in un momento di solitudine e depressione, proprio per il fatto che si trovava da sola, senza un uomo e con una prospettiva di vita solitaria. Io, stasera, escludendo la prospettiva di vita solitaria e la mancanza di un uomo, mi sento così, senza gioia, solo e sconsolato.

Wer nach eingänglichem, leicht bis mittelschwer spielbarem Notenmaterial für das Bar-Piano fragt, der dürfte als Antwort in den meisten Fällen v.a. einen Namen hören: Susi Weiss. Denn mittlerweile ist die «klassisch» studierte Bad-Aiblinger Bar-Piano-Dame, die spätestens seit ihren Auftritten als Pianistin auf dem ZDF-«Traumschiff» bekannt wurde, in den einschlägigen Fachkreisen fast ein Synonym für gepflegte Bar-Klavier-Musik geworden. Ihre Heft-Reihe «Susi’s Bar Piano» ist inzwischen bei Amateuren wie Profis sehr verbreitet, und jetzt legt sie bereits den fünften Band mit Hit-Titeln aus der schön-schummrigen Welt des Bar-Klavierspiels vor.
Letzteres ist dabei gar so einfach nicht, wie’s sich während des romantischen Tête-à-têtes bei Drink und Kerzenschein jeweils so einschmeichelnd anhört. Die Kunst des effektvollen Bar-Piano-Musizierens verlangt ein eigenes emotionales und doch leicht unterkühltes Timbre, einen speziellen rhythmischen «Groove», und ein quasi «atmosphärisches» Dynamik-Feeling, das die noble Balance zwischen Präsenz und Dezenz hält. Gute Bar-Pianisten sind selten – wenn sie mittlerweile nicht überhaupt ihre ganze Musikalität an Mikrophon und Mixer delegiert haben… Jahrelange Erfahrung, gehobene Klaviertechnik und ein (auch stilistisch) breites Repertoire sind für diesen Job unabdingbar; nichts ist falscher als das Klischee, der Bar-Piano-Player sei ein herabgesunkener Konzert-Pianist. Bar-Klaviermusik hat ihre ganz eigenen, keinesfalls simplen Gesetze, und sie ist neben der klassischen und der Jazz-Pianistik eine eigenständige (wenngleich immer seltener gehörte) dritte Klavier-Disziplin.

Dieses spezifisch Improvisatorische, die musikalisch «seidene Halbwelt», ja eine gewisse Laszivität in Rhythmus, Klang und Ausdruck des guten Bar-Pianos nun in primitive Notenschrift umzusetzen ist abermals eine sehr spezielle Herausforderung. Die Arrangeurin Susi Weiss hat da in ihren Heften einen pragmatischen, an den Voraussetzungen des eher dilettierenden Klavierspielens orientierten Ansatz gefunden. Einerseits pflegt sie rechtshändig eine oft üppige und dabei die Melodien simultan stützende Akkordik…

… während die Linke rhythmisch eher simpel grundiert, zuweilen aber durchaus auch synkopisierendes Profil entwickelt:

Das Tonarten-Spektrum ist mit zumeist höchstens einem Vorzeichen betont eng gehalten, während die Harmonik grundsätzlich sehr kontrastierend, spannungsreich daherkommt. Letzteres ist übrigens einer der besonderen Reize aller Weiss’schen Bearbeitungen.
Demgegenüber gänzlich verzichtet wird auf technisch Anspruchsvolles wie z.B. weiträumiges Arpeggieren oder variatives Skalenspiel. Wobei der/die Pianist/in das nackte Notenmaterial der Arrangeurin durchaus nicht sakrosankt nehmen sollte:  Versiertere Amateur-Spieler werden auch «zwischen den Noten» lesen und je nach Spiellaune, insbesondere in den «Slows», spezifisch barpianistisch «füllen».

Dieser aktuellste «Susi’s Bar Piano»-Band ist mit seinen 20 berühmten (und auch weniger berühmten) «Swings, Evergreens und Pop-Classics» jedenfalls eine neuerlich interessante Ergänzung des gepflegten, aber nicht zu schwierigen Bar-Piano-Repertoires. Sicher nix für «Beginners» nach zwei oder drei Jahren Unterricht, aber lockeres Spielmaterial für ambitionierte «Aufsteiger» mit einem besonderen Bar-Feeling.
Bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass die offensichtlich sehr produktive Autorin das Niveau ihrer bisherigen Publikationen halten kann; man darf auf die weiteren Arbeiten dieser aus vielfältiger eigener Praxis heraus schaffenden Arrangeurin gespannt sein.

Hier kommt jetzt eine Ergänzung zum Band zwei der Wumbaba-Trilogie, wo nämlich von den „Wunderwesen des Verhörens“ die Rede ist.

Neulich war ich in Leipzig bei Radio Mephisto, einem der besten Studentenradios in Deutschland, und der Moderator fragte gleich zu Beginn, ob ich das hier schon kennen würde, es sei die aktuelle Nummer 1 in den amerikanischen Verhör-Hitlisten: 

Nein, kannte ich noch nicht, aber jetzt kenne ich es, und Sie auch. Eric Carmen möchte nicht mehr Obamas Kobold sein und auch nicht mehr „all by myself“, nicht mehr allein. Aber was wird aus Obama, wenn der Kobold weg ist? War der sein wahres Erfolgsgeheimnis?
