Back in 2000, I praised the teen-horror flick “Ginger Snaps” for finding new ground in the long thou

Back in 2000, I praised the teen-horror flick “Ginger Snaps” for finding new ground in the long thought dead genre of werewolf films. The film went on to become an instant cult success and to this day still ranks as one of the greatest werewolf films of all time.

The reason the film was so good because it didn’t stall on a lot of the hang-ups of conventional werewolf films. You don’t have silver bullets, a man who is the wolf, a sudden metamorphosis and a cult for or against the beast. Instead you had two sisters who cling to each other as one becomes overwhelmed by the beast inside.

In the original we saw the fate of older sister Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and now her younger sister, Brigitte (Emily Perkins) is on the run. Trying to fight off the affliction she inherited from her dead sister, Brigitte is found by the police and sent to a drug rehab centre since it is believed she is a user from all the needle marks on her arms.

Brigitte wakes up and finds herself without her injections to fight her transformation and trapped within the centre. Brigitte befriends a young girl, Ghost (Tatiana Maslany), and they hatch a plan to escape the centre so Brigitte can also escape her destiny. But first they have to slip past a sadistic orderly, Tyler (Smallville’s Eric Johnson) and the centre’s matron, Alice (Janet Kidder).

“Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed” is a worthy successor to the 2000 original as it breaks new ground without ignoring what made the first so interesting. I was really surprised that how well the film’s story and take on the werewolf mythos was addressed in this entry even without it being a sequel.

In the original we saw Ginger’s story as a typical popular girl at high school deals with slowly becoming more lethal and eventually an outcast. Now with Brigitte’s story we continue with the struggle of a teenage girl except instead the whole drug angle is continued from the first film and we see how Brigitte has to deal.

The small problems I had with this film were the darkness and heavy shadowing used in the film’s photography. In some places it was hard to see what was actually happening. I was also confused as to what was the story about the male werewolf. Where did he come from?

I really enjoyed this film and the strong performance by lead Emily Perkins was amazing after she was so over-shadowed by Katharine Isabelle in the first film. She is amazing in this film. I also adored the performance from young Tatiana Maslany who could give Dakota Fanning a run for her money.

Overall this sequel makes me also anticipate the third entry in the series which has been said to be a prequel set in the 1800s. I can’t wait to see it.

4 out of 5

To these people who insist on fabricating entire genres based on a single album (remember Battles

To these people who insist on fabricating entire genres based on a single album (remember Battles’ Mirrored?): the last time I checked, nobody’s dad wanted to listen to Nels Cline’s guitar howl and grind for a full minute during a one-note interlude. Or if they do, they’ve probably got interesting taste in music that extends well beyond the experimental confines of Wilco (The Album), which, if you were wondering, isn’t far. Instead, it would appear Wilco has graciously accepted their place as a band with a camel on their album cover. A camel with a party hat on.

Guitarist Nels Cline is to Wilco, this late in their career, a technical godsend. On the albums, it’s uncontested, but his rangy presence on stage, even, is a unifying and wondrous thing to behold. Throughout Wilco – and even moreso on Sky Blue Sky, for that matter, his mastery over the guitar is absolutely mind-blowing, and not in an Yngwie Malmsteen type of way. See, those types of guys — and don’t think this list doesn’t include Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, etc. — are really little more than solo jocks, with every miserable track they write another divine platform for them to grandstand on until their audience is visibly glowing with admiration. Worse still, their followings are disgustingly loyal, and at the same time, not at all the kind of people you want to have in your corner (think of Mike Tyson’s grinning, tattooed face holding up signs reading “Free Kobe;” thanks, but no thanks, buddy). At any given concert (read: recital), you’d need a palm counter to keep track of all the t-shirts covered in sundry guitars with phrases like “So Many Choices, So Little Time,” and “Life Is Guitar, The Rest Is Just Details.” Ok, we get it – you learned how to finger-tap. Ladies, please, keep your shirts on!

Though Nels has a relatively reserved arsenal for a man of his ability, the crowd simply can’t get enough, and frequently egg him on between songs. It’s really no wonder: aside from being a prodigiously talented individual, he is a magnetic stage personality. He flails his limbs wildly during interludes, kicking his heels out sideways as he abuses the tremolo bar to wrestle out his trademark fluttering vibrato (“One Wing”). It’s as if he is the guitar solo made manifest, acting outwardly whatever internal passion his hands cannot convey. He owns the music and loves it simultaneously; it is a delight to watch. At least, it’s a lot more delightful than watching fanboys expel shuddering hyperbole on the merits of Surfing With The Alien.

You can almost see the wizened band members shaking their heads and chuckling to themselves when bandleader Jeff Tweedy presented them with “Wilco (The Song).” Gleefully smug and casually self-referential, the lyrics are oddly comforting: “tired of being exposed to the cold / the stare of your stereo / put on your headphones / before you explode / Wilco / Wilco / Wilco’ll love ya, baby.” Just as quickly as it began, the bizarre band-name-as-title-track is off the stage, and Wilco is bathing the listener lovingly in brushed acoustic strings and harpsichord pangs. “Deeper Down” goes in fits and starts, pausing between phrases to suss out the weight of Tweedy’s plaintive phrasing. Other highlights include the Feist feature “You And I,” and “Sonny Feeling,” an ambling alt-country rocker.

Nothing, of course, matches the the brutal deconstruction of “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” that Wilco is so famous for. Not all of it is lost yet, however. It might be the one holdout track, but the band spends the latter part of “Bull Black Nova” investigating a single note suspended over what might be their funkiest bass groove yet. The band shrieks and wails as Tweedy, riddled with desperation, musters “it’s in my hair / there’s blood in the sink / I can’t calm down / I can’t think.”

Wilco’s “Bull Black Nova.” from Wilco (The Album).

And after fifteen loyal years, fans have come to terms with Tweedy’s relatively sedate nature on-stage. Any action he performs, that in any universe could be considered even slightly funny, is instantly made hilarious because Jeff Tweedy’s doing it, and that in itself is half the charm of whatever rare between-song banter happens to take place. When guitarist Pat Sansone steps forward and raises his guitar demonstratively aloft in his best Pete Townshend, the audience doesn’t bat an eye. Jeff Tweedy trades shirts with a crowd member, however, and they cheer and holler as if he’s cured some virulent disease.

All of this talk of the band and so little about the actual music probably leaves the reader wondering: is there any meat to the review, or indeed, to the record itself? In fact, the essence of the record is best conveyed with an understanding about the band. Not a forgiving understanding of the elderly, mind you; this is not a list of excuses for the band’s shortcomings in its members’ middle age years. In short, Wilco is not a failure at innovation, it’s a success at dignified folk-rock craft. Wilco has yet again asserted their territory as a dependably enjoyable group of musicians; they have all the technical ability of a group of studio players, combined with the posture and creativity of a road act. The best part is, they don’t veer toward the cloying pseudo-spirituality of so many aged rockers still trying to hogtie the intangible – their irretrievable youth.

So, really, the main difference between Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (The Album) is not so much the music, but that the fans (and perhaps the band members) have accepted that Wilco is simply a band embracing a mature eminence. What’s more, they still have a leg up on many Top 40 rock groups — most of them in their 20s and 30s — and they also still have a lot of fun doing what they do. Wilco (The Album) is a success partially because it’s well-written, but mostly because it’s delivered with such comfort and confidence, in the studio and on stage.

Jim Agnello said on Thursday that he has resigned as the athletic director and the head baseball coa

Jim Agnello said on Thursday that he has resigned as the athletic director and the head baseball coach at St. Rose after leading the Purple Roses to consecutive Non-Public B titles in his only two seasons as head coach.

“I’m moving on and expanding my business in Staten Island,” Agnello said. “I agonized and agonized over this. The kids are what kept me there and it hurts me to leave. It was a tough decision because of those quality kids, and I wish them the very best. Me leaving doesn’t mean they have to stop what they’ve been doing the last couple years.

“My business has been strong and I’ve only devoted less than half my time to it, so I think it can take off with me there full time.”

Agello runs “Jim Agnello’s Baseball Academy” in Staten Island, where he was an assistant at Wagner for six years before coming to St. Rose. A Howell graduate, Agnello came in as the athletic director first and then took over the Purple Roses’ baseball program shortly after because of the controversial end to the tenure of former long-time coach Bart McInerney, who was charged with 12 counts of child endangerment in 2008.

“We really tried to build a program, a culture, and an idea of moving forward, and the kids really worked hard to make that a reality,” Agnello said.

Agnello didn’t rule out trying to coach again in the Shore Conference but said it would not even be a consideration for at least a year or two. St. Rose defeated Montclair Kimberly Academy, 11-0, in five innings to win their second straight Non-Public B title in the fall and also reached the semifinals of the Monmouth County and Shore Conference Tournaments. In 2008, St. Rose also reached the SCT semis while winning the MCT in addition to sectional and state titles. St. Rose had won three overall state titles in its history before winning the two straight and turning in consecutive 20-win seasons under Agnello. St. Rose also went undefeated in Class B Central in both years as well.

The candidates for his replacement as baseball coach could be his assistants, including former Central head coach Jerry Frulio, who has been an assistant at St. Rose for two years. Assistant Mike Cerminaro and jayvee coach Rich Lanko are other possible candidates to helm a team that lost most of its starting lineup to graduation as a 14-player senior class walked the aisle this past spring.

In other St. Rose baseball news, the site of their home field could be in jeopardy. Their regular home field has been at the Shore Christian Academy, which has closed, and the property has been foreclosed on. That means that a potential buyer that does not want to use the property for a school could get rid of the baseball field to accommodate whatever the buyer wanted to do with the land. The bank still owns the property as of now and it has not been sold.

In other baseball news, T.J. O’Donnell has been approved by the Board of Education and has returned as Raritan’s head baseball coach after a two-year hiatus. O’Donnell, who led the Rockets to a Group II title and perennial playoff berths in his previous tenure, replaces Bobby Devlin.

Finally, there are some college commitments to report as the Toms River North duo of pitcher Rudy Ferrentino and infielder/pitcher Brian Gilbert have both offered verbal commitments to Seton Hall, so congrats to them. Colts Neck senior infielder/pitcher Charlie Lasky has also reportedly verbally committed to Rutgers, and Red Bank senior pitcher/outfielder Jake Kalish has committed to George Mason. All four were Carpenter Cup selections in the spring.

The certification exam 70-623 is geared to customer support. I have heard it is for Geek Squad and Nerds on site and such. Yet the materials in this book will be useful for anyone who services computers or provides customer/consumer support. It spends more time on soft skills than a lot of certification exam books do.

Having already worked through other books and written exams for 70-620 and 70-622, I still found I learned a lot from this book both about Vista and about some of its features and resources.

This book comes with a CD that has the PDF of the book, so you can keep the searchable electronic copy with you. This is a great resource. It also contains a sample test, electronic flashcards for learning and a custom test engine to help you prepare for what the real exam will be like.

This book, and the material that the Erics teach through it, contains skills that anyone in the computer industry could benefit from. Having worked through this book in a week, I was able to pass the 70-623 exam with flying colours.

One of the biggest advantages of this book over some others, is that it gives you the answer keys to the review questions at the end of each chapter, rather than needing to hunt and search, or find someone with an instructor CD.

Eric Johnson: Recent Works @ William Turner

“Inspired by both art and science, Eric Johnson creates composite works of pigment, wood and resin. The handcrafted abstract works are sheathed in resin skins, often revealing glimpses of skeletal armatures and hidden architectures. Over the past twelve years, the structures have become organic and revealing to their formation. The current work merges the passion for depth and structure with an obsession for color and surface.”

Olha a trilha sonora! Eric Johnson, Steve Vai e Joe Satriani tocando Jimi Hendrix. Aumenta o volume e pira.

Repara que ja existia crowd.

Olha uma session com uma prancha toda quebrada (TOCO) o cutback que o cara dá. Para!!!

OLHA O TUBO QUE O lARRY FAZ COM ESSE TOCO AOS 3 MIN E DEZ SEGUNDOS.

Só eu ja assisti mais de dez vezes. Esse não tem nem pro “Carlos Leite”, seus nove títulos mundiais e suas quadriquilhas.

Dan Sindel, a “One Man Orchestra,” recreates John Philip Sousa’s and Handel’s orchestral scores on Marching In by transposing and transcribing the compositions to accommodate the guitar’s tonal range. This collectible “limited edition” CD features an eclectic blend of Dan’s “Symphonic Guitar” instrumental orchestrations and brings a new light to modern guitar playing and arrangement. Some of the greatest mixing engineers and producers in the music business today lent their talents to bring Dan’s unique musical vision to life including: Steve Sykes (Steve Lukather, Bon Jovi, Stanley Clarke, David Benoit), Carmen Rizzo (Prince, Coldplay, Seal, Ray Charles, Paul Oakenfold), Bruno Canale (Brian Welch of Korn, Alex Acuna).
