For the past couple of Pixar movies I’ve been obsessed with some of the artwork. For The Incredibles, I loved the comic book style promo posters, for Ratatouille there were posters that resembled French Café and now for Wall-e, there are posters that reflect the old 1970’s ride posters Disneyland produced.

After some thorough research, I found out the artist is Eric Tan. According to his blog, he’s a graphic designer/doodler who grew up in San Diego. (And that’s about it) All I really know is I love what’s he’s done and his artwork now graces my computer screen.

P.S. He’s also done some other work and I thought you should check it out. Also, if you want an actual poster, you can go to Acme Archives to purchase one. The problem is they are a bit pricey.

Pay no attention to the organizer to the right. It’s still June. Usually I don’t do much on Saturdays. I’m just too far behind on 1) sleep and 2) personal projects (whatever they may be). I did make it downtown to see Wall-E, despite all the construction on the local and express subway lines on the west side. Let’s just say late evening and weekend travel is at a crawl. That’s probably another reason I don’t rush around town during the weekend.

Looking at Wall-E I have to say that while I wasn’t surprised I was really happy with the way the movie turned out. Pixar is generally inches away from making me believe that robots are people too. Just look at Blade Runner and the novel that inspired it (as well as countless other genre tales of humanity).

Here’s my rundown on the movie itself:

Loved it:

The emerging personalities of the main characters (the robots, not the actual people). The people in this movie were quite boring so I’m not going to talk about them unless I have to. This movie is about robots. Wall-E clearly doesn’t know what love is until he meets EVE. Yes he watches old videos, but probably just sees them as very very interesting. Hey, all he does is hang out with a cockroach (I’ll talk about cockroach later), collect spare parts and odd things, and reorganize trash.

Clearly the cockroach and Wall-E’s recycling habits (for sustaining himself) are an allegory for global warming and sustainability. No big surprise there, just look at how humans are depicted. Lazy and detached from reality.

Also loved it:

The HAL-esque AUTO robot. A total homage to Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, just listen to the ape/monolith music from the beginning of 2001 that plays when the captain of the human ship gets up off his ass for the first time in his life. Clearly a re-evolution.

Not So Much:

The people. But, we’re meant to dislike them. They’ve become weak and boneless (literally) due to their pampered McLifestyle. Cupcakes in a Cup, what’s that about?

Anyway, the film was so awesome I’ll probably see it again next weekend. So should you.

Pics: Cool Wall-E art from artist Eric Tan

Here’s part of an interview with artist Eric Tan about his cool retro Disney artwork for this movie and others:

“A lot of the creative leads up at Pixar are huge fans of the Disneyland attraction (or ride) posters. A lot of the ones from the 60’s were done in this very simple, colorful style. In fact, you always come across a few pinned up on the walls when you walk through the halls of Pixar. I’ve always been a big fan of those too and when it became a point of discussion during prep work for the Incredibles posters, I thought it made perfect sense. That film felt very retro as far as design aesthetic and I felt the posters evoked that and would work nicely as inspiration. Once we got to Wall-E, they brought up the same posters again! Which shows how hung up on them they are. The ad twist was something I thought would give them a point of difference from the Incredibles posters.”

A bit of visual candy: Disney designer Eric Tan makes posters for new films in the old style. Taking inspiration from the work of the artists of the German UFA studios of the 1920s, Tan’s posters are used within Hollywood (The X-Men poster was produced for Stan Lee’s birthday), but have yet to be given a full theatrical release.
