White Sox pitchers Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz are officially headed to the DL. The team has confirmed this is a press release where they also announced that Lucas Harrell and Erick Threets will fill the vacated roster spots.

Putz left last night’s game after throwing three pitches and then experiencing discomfort in his right knee. Putz has been diagnosed with right knee patella tendinitis and Thornton with left elbow inflammation. Thornton’s DL stint is retroactive to August 18.

Every team in baseball has to deal with key injuries. Look at the Twins. Justin Morneau has bee

Every team in baseball has to deal with key injuries. Look at the Twins. Justin Morneau has been out since the All-Star break and Joe Nathan has been missing for the entire season. How about the Red Sox? Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Victor Martinez, Jacob Ellsbury, Mike Cameron and Clay Buchholz are among those who have been laid up and Youkilis, Ellsbury and Cameron are out or likely out for the year.

So as much as it took away from last night’s more-exciting-than-it-needed-to-be 7-5 victory over the Orioles and the reality that we gained a game on the Twins, we just have to deal with this unfortunate fact: both Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz are going on the DL and we’ve got to head into the stretch without two key components.

There’s no word at this juncture as to who will replace them. It’s expected that Erick Threets, who has been on a rehab assignment, will take Thornton’s spot–joining rookie Chris Sale as the two lefties in the pen. The other callup could be Carlos Torres or Lucas Harrell, who did such a stellar job when he was promoted to Chicago earlier this year. Or maybe it could be former “cup of coffee” major leaguer Ryan Braun, who has 18 saves and a 2.00 ERA at Charlotte.

Of course, the timing couldn’t be worse. The bullpen has been overworked and struggling as it is. Because of Sergio Santos‘ erratic performance last night and Putz’s injury, Bobby Jenks had to be summoned two days after hurling three innings in Kansas City. The good news is that he was terrific both times–and got the save last night–but how much longer can he hold down the fort by himself? And Ozzie, shown above making the change from Santos to Putz in last night’s harrowing ninth inning, will have to do a major juggling act.

In baseball, sometimes up is down and down is up and what’s expected plays out exactly the opposite. Let’s hope for that.

Things I’m thinking about…

* After the 12-2 win over the Tigers in the opener I would have loved a doubleheader sweep last night, but as one of the members of my Sox posse e-mailed after the second game: “It’s baseball. You don’t win them all. We split two games and gained one-half game. I’ll take it.” And we all know how difficult it is to sweep a twinbill.

* You’d be hard-pressed to find a better story than that of 43-year-old future Hall of Famer Omar Vizquel (above). Having taken over the third base job after Mark Teahen‘s injury, he’s now hitting .293 with numerous clutch hits and superb defense. Remarkable.

* Has anybody noticed that Alexei Ramirez is hovering around the .300 mark at .296? And, oh, that defense.

* Less than two months ago Chris Sale was the club’s No. 1 draft choice out of Florida Gulf Coast University. Is he now headed to Chicago? After four games with Class A Winston-Salem, he was promoted to AAA Charlotte and has struck out 15 in 6 1/3 innings over seven relief appearances. With Carlos Torres shipped back to Charlotte after last night’s start and Erick Threets on the DL, speculation is that Sale might be joining the big club as the second lefty in the pen.

* I wonder how the hapless Orioles will respond to new manager Buck Showalter, who Ozzie sarcastically has referred to as “Mr. Baseball.” If they improve, I hope they start after we leave town next Monday night.

* I’m eager to see Edwin Jackson face his former teammates in Detroit tonight. Would love to see a lights-out performance.

* A big thank you to the Rays, now on top of the A.L. East, for taking the first two games against the Twins.

Last night’s 9-2 White Sox victory over the Angels was pretty close to perfection. Solid pitching, great defense, four homers, clutch hitting and holiday fireworks to top it all off. The only blemish was a scary top of the eighth as Bobby Jenks, obviously rusty from a week’s absence, and newcomer Erick Threets loaded the bases before Sergio Santos slammed the door on the Halos.

Many heroes emerged: Gavin Floyd and his outstanding seven innings, Dayan Viciedo and his first major league home run and a pair of RBI, red-hot Alexei Ramirez and his homer and two RBI were among them.

But the revitalized Carlos Quentin stole the show. Q hit a pair of homers with three RBI. Overcoming a horrendous start, he now has 15 homers and 53 RBI with a week to go before the All-Star Game. And then there was the first inning catch off the bat of Sox nemesis Torii Hunter in right field, which saved a run, set the tone for the night and is certain to be an ESPN “Web Gem.” Here it is, though the photo doesn’t do it justice.

Pauliewood

I can’t say enough about Mark Buehrle. His pitching accomplishments, his leadership, his sense of humor and the fact he still runs out to catch ceremonial first pitches except on days he’s on the mound all contribute to him being special.

And not everybody boasting his credentials would be the leading spokesperson for the election of a teammate for an All-Star berth–especially when said spokesperson didn’t make it himself. But then again, Buehrle isn’t everybody. Here he is, t-shirt and all, at the Cell last night encouraging fans to vote for Paul Konerko, who by the way should already be on the American League roster.

Dan Hudson the Virginia Beach native who starred at Princess and High School and Old Dominion University came back home with authority on Monday night leading the Knights to a 6-3 victory over the Tides. 2913 fans were in attendance including Hudson’s personal fan gallery in section 205 with temperatures that dropped into the mid-50s. Hudson’s supporters hung “Ks” off the Right Field Party Deck as the hard throwing right hander stuck out nine Tides giving up only 2 hits and a run in 5.2 innings work. Apart from a lead off solo home run by Tides Center Fielder Jeff Salazar, Hudson had the Tides number at one point retiring 14 Tides in a row before Rhyne Hughes singled with 2 outs in the 5th inning.

Brandon Erbe gave up 4 runs in his Norfolk Debut

Tides starter Brandon Erbe making his AAA debut did not fare as well. The Orioles prospect surrendered 2 runs in the top of the first as he gave up consecutive weak singles to Alejandro De Aza and Jordan Danks and a base on balls to Stefan Gartrell. De Aza was driven in on a ground out by Josh Kroeger and Danks on a ground out to short by Tyler Flowers before Erbe stuck out Dayan Viciedo to end the inning.

With the Tides’ bats silent and Hudson cruising the Knights went back to work in the 4th when Brett Lillibridge was safe on a infield single to Tides Third Baseman Josh Bell. With one out C. J. Retherford lined a double into right field which scored Lillibridge making the score 3-1. The Knights would add another run in the 5th off of Erbe when Stefan Gartrell singled to left off of Erbe who was pulled for reliever Jim Miller. Miller who struggled in his first outing initially seemed unsure of himself. Gartrell stole second beating the throw by Steve Lerud and scored when Tyler Flowers doubled off the right field wall near the foul pole. Miller recovered his poise to strike out Viciedo and get Lillibridge out on a fly to center.

Tides reliever Jim Miller seemed to regain his form of a year ago

In the bottom of the 5th the Tides got a two out rally when Rhyne Hughes singled off of Hudson to end the Tides hitting drought. Steve Lerud walked but the inning ended on a Jonathan Tucker ground ball which led to a force out of Lerud at Second.

Jonathan Tucker crashing the foul pole padding attempting to snare Tyler Flowers’ double in the 5th inning

In the 6th inning Miller gave up a single to Javier Castillo to lead off the 9th but stuck out the side sending Retherford, De Aza and Danks down on strikes looking like he did in the first half of 2008 when as a closer he saved 13 games and was selected for the International League All-Star Team. In the bottom half of the 6th Robert Andino doubled off of Hudson with one out and after Hudson got Lou Montanez to ground out to third leaving Andino frozen at second Hudson left the game to the wild cheers of his personal cheering section. Erick Threets then got Scott Moore to ground out leaving yet another Tides base runner in scoring position.

Steve Lerud trying to gun down a Knights runner

Miller set down the Knights in order in the 7th striking out another and the Threets returned the favor in the bottom of the 7th sending Snyder, Bell and Hughes down in order allowing Miller to leave the game in much better shape than his opening night performance. It seemed as if the old Jim Miller was back.

Kam Mikolio came in for the Tides in the top of the 8th and the big right hander struggled. After striking out Viciedo Mickolio gave up a single to Lillibridge who then stole second and was driven home on a double to right by Javier Castillo. Mikolio then waled De Aza and struck out Danks before being relieved by Alberto Castillo. The Tides closer got Stefan Gartrell to ground out on a dribbler to him in front of home plate to end the inning. Former Tide Greg Acquino came in for Charlotte and retired the first two batters before giving up a single to Jeff Salazar. The Tides were unable to take advantage as Robert Andino struck out to end the inning.

Charlotte would add another in the 9th off of Castillo when Josh Kroeger singled to left and advanced to second when Tyler Flowers was hit by a pitch. Dayan Viciedo then popped out to Brandon Snyder in foul territory. Brent Lillibridge at bat Kroeger stole 3rd base. Lillibridge sacrificed Kroeger in for the 6th Knights run before Javier Castillo flied out to right to end the inning. In the bottom of the 9th Lou Montanez flied out to center and Scott Moore went down on strikes before Brandon Snyder singled to center and advanced on a wild pitch by Acquino. Josh Bell doubled to Right scoring Snyder and scored himself when Rhyne Hughes singled to Center. Steve Lerud walked but the rally died when Jonathan Tucker flied out to Right Fielder Stefan Gartrell to end the game.

Tonight Chris Tillman (0-1 4.50) will work against Charlotte’s Lucas Harrell (0-0 9.53). The there are rain showers in the forecast with temperatures in the 50s so bundle up and meet me there.

Peace

After failing to get a sniff of the major leagues as an infielder with five organizations, Sergio Sa

After failing to get a sniff of the major leagues as an infielder with five organizations, Sergio Santos is finally a big-leaguer–as a relief pitcher. He earned that distinction with a fine spring and today the 2002 No. 1 draft pick of the Diamondbacks was named to the White Sox 25-man roster heading into Opening Day. And he’s only been pitching since last year.

The other roster question was also answered as Jayson Nix made the team as a utility infielder/outfielder.

The final cuts were infielder/outfielder Brent Lillibridge, outfielder Alejandro De Aza, pitcher Dan Hudson (Charlotte) and hurlers Greg Aquino, Erick Threets and Charlie Leesman plus catcher Donny Lucy (assigned to minor league camp).

The Sox will go into battle beginning next Monday with the following roster:

Pitchers (12): Mark Buehrle, Jake Peavy, John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Freddy Garcia, Bobby Jenks, Matt Thornton, J.J. Putz, Scott Linebrink, Tony Pena, Randy Williams, Sergio Santos

Catchers (2): A.J. Pierzynski, Ramon Castro

Infielders (7): Paul Konerko, Gordon Beckham, Alexei Ramirez, Mark Teahen, Mark Kotsay, Omar Vizquel, Jayson Nix

Outfielders (4): Juan Pierre, Alex Rios, Carlos Quentin, Andruw Jones

Mark Gonzales remind us that Jayson Nix and Sergio Santos don’t have any minor-league options left and must pass through waivers to remain with the Sox if they aren’t named to the roster. OTOH, Alejandro De Aza and Brent Lillibridge have minor-league options and can be sent to the minors. Erick Threets and Greg Aquino have signed AAA contracts and will remain with the Sox even if they aren’t included in the team’s the roster. Conclusion: Sergio Santos with his 98mph fastball and his three above average pitches ain’t going anywhere. BTW, Jim warns on the danger of taking a 13th pitcher in Jayson Nix’s place.

I know this comment sounds strange, considering Flowers is pegged as the organization’s catcher of the future. But in my humble estimation, you have to keep Pierzynski for another couple of years. I really think he’s as valuable as any player on the team, in terms of all the intangibles he brings to the equation. He calls a good game, is one of the game’s better catchers on offense and possesses the sort of strident leadership you need in a winning clubhouse.

Will the real Mark Teahen please step forward? The new White Sox third baseman (pictured above) was acquired from the Royals during the off-season partially due to his dominance over Sox pitching–particularly Mark Buehrle. In other words, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

Whether he has been trying too hard to impress his new teammates or simply is in a routine slump, Teahen has had a very disappointing spring. Going into yesterday’s game against the Diamondbacks at Camelback Ranch, ultimately a 10-3 Sox victory, he was hitting .143. It got so bad that instead of staying with the varsity, Teahen was jettisoned to minor league camp in an effort to get him straightened out. Well, so far so good.

This afternoon, Teahen’s first appearance since his short stint in the outer fields, he went 2-4 with a single and a two-run homer–his first extra base hit this spring. While Teahen provided the best news of the day, there were other happy highlights:

* Omar Vizquel snapped out of a slump by going 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI, a walk with two runs scored.

* Carlos Quentin was 3 for 5 with two RBI.

* Juan Pierre went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and his fourth stolen base of the spring.

* Mark Kotsay was 2 for 4 along with two runs scored.

* Pitching-wise, John Danks hurled six good innings, allowing three runs and five hits. Greg Aquino, Bobby Jenks and Erick Threets each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the win.

The Sox are now 7-11-4 this spring. They travel to nearby Peoria tomorrow afternoon to face the Padres.

In less than two weeks (Monday, April 5), the White Sox open up the regular season against the Cleve

In less than two weeks (Monday, April 5), the White Sox open up the regular season against the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field.

Today, the Sox got a bit closer to their Opening Day 25-man roster by sending two players to Charlotte–pitcher Carlos Torres and catcher Tyler Flowers–and five others to their minor league camp. They include outfielder Jordan Danks, first baseman Josh Kroeger, third baseman Brent Morel, second baseman C.J. Retherford and pitcher Ryan Braun. There are now 32 left in the big league camp.

The likely scenario finds two roster spots yet to be filled. The Sox expect to take 12 pitchers north–starters Jake Peavy, Mark Buehrle, Gavin Floyd, John Danks, Freddy Garcia and a bullpen of Bobby Jenks, J.J. Putz, Matt Thornton, Scott Linebrink, Tony Pena, Randy Williams and one of the following: Sergio Santos (pictured below), Dan Hudson, Greg Aquino, Erick Threets and Charlie Leesman. The best bet to make it is Santos, who is out of options and has been very impressive this spring.

The other spot, a backup infielder/outfielder, will probably go to either frontrunner Jayson Nix, who is out of options, or Brent Lillibridge. The wild card here is if the Sox decide to go with red-hot outfielder Alejandro De Aza instead of Nix or Lillibridge. Or, they could go with 11 pitchers and take both De Aza and Nix/Lillibridge (pictured below, left to right, under the watchful eye their skipper). One last possibility, admittedly remote, is to take a 13th pitcher instead of the extra position player.

seven cuts announced prior to Tuesday’s game with the Giants. And the players surviving the moves stand as intriguing as the ones sent down or sent out.

Catcher Tyler Flowers and right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres were optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, while right-handed pitcher Ryan Braun, outfielders Jordan Danks and Josh Kroeger and infielders Brent Morel and C.J. Retherford were reassigned to Minor League camp.

… Tuesday’s moves give the White Sox 32 players in Major League camp and basically nine players fighting for two roster spots. The utility infielder battle, to complement Omar Vizquel, appears to come down to Jayson Nix and Brent Lillibridge, with Nix being out of options. …

You know the old adage, playing to a tie is like kissing your sister. That’s exactly what happened yesterday in Tempe as the Sox kicked off their spring training schedule with a 4-4 tie with the Angels.

The Sox had a 4-2 lead heading into the eighth, but prospect Brian Omogrosso couldn’t find the plate and the tying runs scored. The South Siders had a chance in the top of the ninth with Alejandro De Aza on third and two outs, but C.J. Retherford struck out.

While it certainly wasn’t as satisfying as getting the win, we’ll take the tie on the road. And here are a few positives to ponder.

* A.J. Pierzynski‘s two-run homer in the fifth to give the Sox a 4-2 lead.
* Starter John Danks‘ two shutouts innings.
* If yesterday was any indication, the Sox will indeed run in 2010. They stole four
bases in the opener–Juan Pierre, Andruw Jones, Mark Kotsay, De Aza.
* Converted infielder Sergio Santos was very impressive, striking out the side in
   the sixth.
* Dayan Viciedo, trying to make the switch to first, played well in the field and singled
   in a run.
* Newcomers Pierre and Mark Teahen each reached base on a hit and scored a run.
* Lefties Randy Williams and Erick Threets and righty Clevelan Santeliz each pitched
a scoreless inning. Santeliz shut the door in the ninth to preserve the tie.

Mark Buehrle makes his first spring start today against the Dodgers at Camelback
Ranch. J.J. Putz and Scott Linebrink are also scheduled to see action.

Mr. Perfect takes the hill today vs. the Dodgers in Glendale

Manager Ozzie Guillen said on Sunday that he is torn between letting Hudson pitch out of the bullpen and occasionally have a spot start as opposed to pitching every five days at Triple-A.

I asked Guillen for an assessment of Hudson at this point.

“I love him,” Guillen said. “Right now if he doesn’t make the ballclub, it’s better to get his innings because we never know what is going to happen with the five starters.” …

Decisions will have to be made about what to do with rookie Daniel Hudson, who is competing for the long-relief spot. Manager Ozzie Guillen indicated on Sunday that Hudson might be better served getting his regular work in the Minors, as opposed to being used sporadically by the White Sox.

Freddy Dolsi, Lucas Harrell, Sergio Santos, Carlos Torres and Daniel Cabrera all are in contention for that long-relief job, while Guillen said Randy Williams has the upper hand for the left-handed specialist spot but is no roster lock. That assessment is good news for non-roster invite Erick Threets, the hard-throwing southpaw who has impressed during the first week of camp.

Gonzales:

The second left-handed relief spot is Randy Williams’ job to lose, but Erick Threets has been given an extended look and has impressed the coaching staff so far. Look for Threets to challenge Williams.

I originally wanted to see Will Ohman in Dodger blue as far back as last October, and as his price continued to drop while the Dodgers trotted out minor league jobbers like Brian Mazone and Erick Threets, the fit only seemed more obvious: hey, maybe a contending team who badly needs a lefty specialist should bring in the lefty specialist who’s already said he wants to be on the west coast! I still can’t quite comprehend why it took so long, but common sense has finally arrived:

The Dodgers need relief pitchers, and reliever Will Ohman needs a job. Those two needs intersected on Sunday morning, when the Dodgers gave the free-agent left-hander a tryout.

Ohman, accompanied at Camelback Ranch-Glendale by his agent, went through a two-inning simulated game against Minor League hitters in front of manager Joe Torre and most of the Dodgers’ front office.

Great! Perfect! In case you’re not familiar with Ohman, he’s exactly what the team needs right now, and not even just because of (complete lack of) competition for the position otherwise. The 31-year-old Pepperdine alum made his debut with the Cubs in 2000, getting into 17 games in his first two years, before blowing out his arm and missing 2002 and 2003. Since making it back to the bigs in 2005, he’s been one of the most reliable lefty relievers over the last four seasons, making at least 56 appearances each year with quality results (ERA+ scores of 151, 112, 94, and 116). Even better, unlike Joe Beimel, Ohman’s been killer on fellow southpaws, holding them to just a .571 OPS in 2008.

That’d be a pretty valuable addition to any team, but in comparison to Mazone (32 and yet to appear in a MLB game) and Threets (6.75 spring ERA after allowing a run and two hits in 1/3 of an inning today) Ohman’s basically looking like Sandy Koufax right now – especially when you consider that Hong-Chih Kuo is almost guaranteed to miss some time this year due to injury. (That said, until Kuo does go down, how tasty is a Kuo/Ohman lefty duo? Niiiice.)

So what’s stopping the Dodgers from signing him now-ish? Well, Joe Torre, for one:

Free agent left-hander Will Ohman said he would be ready for opening day, but Manager Joe Torre wasn’t so sure.

Of Ohman’s command when he pitched to minor leaguers in front of the Dodgers’ brain trust, Torre said, “You can see he hasn’t been pitched in games.”

From the MLB.com story, Torre also mentioned:

“But there’s a certain element of sharpness you’d like to have. Where we are, how many times can he pitch [in a game]? We saw today the quality of his stuff. You can see he hasn’t been pitching in a game as far as command. Not that he’s been pinpoint [in his career].”

Well, yeah. I don’t doubt he’s rusty. Why wouldn’t he be? He’s missed almost all of spring training. But doesn’t he have enough of a track record of success to think that it’ll just take him some extra time to get going? I mean, what would you prefer to have out there in the pen? A proven reliever who might need a week or two more to get up to speed, or, well, Brian Mazone and Erick Threets?

Will Ohman. Dodger blue. Let’s make this happen.

Well, today’s game against Milwaukee ought to help send some of those 5th starter wannabe

Well, today’s game against Milwaukee ought to help send some of those 5th starter wannabes to the glue factory:

Eric Stults: 2.1 IP, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 HR (spring ERA: 12.96)
Claudio Vargas: 1 IP, 4 ER, 4 H, 2 HR (spring ERA: 8.22)

Just like most of their pitches today, any chance of these two winning this competition has to be going… going… gone.

With Shawn Estes already a washout, Eric Milton not far behind, and Jason Schmidt already counted out, that has to mean James McDonald wins this by default, right? Imagine that – we really could see a Dodger rotation that’s three-fifths twenty-five-and-under. It’s not exactly the way we all wanted to see it, but man, is that thought tasty.

Not that things went any better for the guys still competing for the 2nd lefty reliever spot, as Brian Mazone and Erick Threets each gave up a homer. Are we really going to sit by and watch the Giants go get Will Ohman? It’s not like his skill set perfectly fits what this team needs, or anything.

On another note, what is with all of the injuries? You’ve got Chad Billingsley, Blake DeWitt, and Mark Loretta all pulling muscles in the same game. You’ve got Clayton Kershaw taking a liner off the hip, Jason Repko pulling a hamstring – in addition to Manny’s previous hamstring problem – and now you’ve got Delwyn Young going for an MRI on his surgically-repaired elbow. Granted, none are that serious, but still, not a good omen.

The season simply cannot start soon enough.
