Adding insult to Sony Ericsson’s injurious bottom line, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U shops (the UK’s largest mobile phone retailers) have halted sales of the SE’s Symbian-powered Satio handset after a high number of customer returns and complaints. A “software glitch” reportedly causes Sony Ericsson’s flagship device to power down when users try to access certain applications — unfortunately, the issue can’t be patched via an over-the-air update. A little digging into CPW discussion forums reveals multiple complaints of freezes, crashes, under-performing batteries, and bizarre interface behavior. Both the Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U will offer “new phones” to customers fed up with their Satio. Richard Dorman, senior marketing manager at Sony Ericsson, concedes the issue and assures us that it should be sorted by Christmas. Until then, you can still purchase the handset directly from Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile… but really, why would you? The Satio’s not the only dubiously-speced 12 megapixel cameraphone on the market.

You will never be short of tracks to listen to on the Sony Ericsson W980i; this clamshell gem has 8GB internal memory, which means tracks and lots of them! It roughly equates to 8,000 full songs. Other music related features include the Shake Control, which allows you to switch tracks with a flick of the wrist.

However aside from the fact the W980i is a gateway to hours of quality music, it is a very good phone. This phone is no gimmick, it has several other handy and quality features. It has HSDPA for high speed downloads, especially useful for music. The W980i is also a 3G phone, which means it has the scope for video calls. It also has a very nice well-protected 3.2 megapixel camera. Although this does lack features such as a flash and autofocus, it is nonetheless useful. The Sony Ericsson W980i is also quadband, so can literally be used anywhere in the world.

It has to be said that the Sony Ericsson W980i has taken the Walkman range to a whole new level, with even better sounding music. It has countless music related features, and effortlessly combines what people want in a mobile phone and music player. The W980i lacks in that it does not have the features or quality of features that other mobile phones have. Nonetheless, the Sony Ericsson W980i was not designed to pack extra features, but include the most practical ones with a fully integrated music player. So in conclusion, Sony Ericsson have done a fantastic job, and if you have a passion for music and want a phone that conveys it, the W980i does it better than any other phone out there.

Game Notes:

1. After the highly-offensive and downright vile shift Georges Laraque took on saturday night, where he high-sticked Helm in the mouth and then took out Krons for up to 2 months, the Red Wings are a bit battered.  Helm is fine, but the Kronwall injury hurts…a lot.  We thought we’d be subject to a Derek Meech/Brett Lebda 3rd pairing, while Big-E will moved up to the 2nd pairing. However, per Khan, it appears we’ll see Big-E up with Lidstrom and all the pairings will be jumbled.  Having Brad Stuart on the 3rd pairing while Brett Lebda is on the 2nd seems comical to me, but I guess Babcock knows what he is doing.  Please come back soon Nik Jr.
2. Ozzie will be starting in goal tonight.  Considering the state of the defense we might need a big game from our goaltender.  I’m left wondering though if we’ll actually get that game.  Ozzie was good against the Preds, and I think this time-share of late with Howard has been helping him get his head on straight.  No matter what people like/dislike about Howard, the fact remains I want to see Ozzie be the goalie that can still keep the Wings in the close games. Hopefully he has returned to that form with Jimmy “giant-rebounds” Howard taking up so much playing time.
3. Nashville has won 5 in a row and Pekka Rinne has been on fire for the Preds.  He’s sporting a 9-1 record in his last 10 starts and his peripheral stats are spectacular. 1.71 GAA and .931 Sv%.  I guess all we can hope is that Z’s Red Hot power can help the wings put more than 1 goal in against the guy.
4. Darren McCarty will be doing analysis for Versus during the intermission.  This will likely be the highlight of the night.  I can’t wait to see D-Mac doing analysis.  Does he wear a suit?  Does he punch Brian Engblom in the face?  The intrigue and suspense is killing me.

Bold and Stupid Predictions:

1. Meech gets an assist on the power-play.  No this doesn’t mean he should be a stalwart on the point from now on…
2. Eaves puts one in finally.  He’s been working too hard not to.  I like the Draper/Eaves/Helm line to get a goal tonight.
3. Pekka Rinne reminds the Red Wings of the power of the Finnish Goaltender and holds the Wings to a low-scoring battle.
4. Osgood holds it down just enough, but let’s in one goal he certainly shouldn’t.
5. Red Wings Win 3-2.

1. Right Post – Jonathan Ericsson again seemed to find a way to get the puck into the Red Wings net.  That trend needs to stop.  I understand he’s huge and was clutch in the playoffs.  He also managed to somehow blow my prediction that I thought was assured, and was solely responsible for a goal against.  Thanks.
2. Left Post – The Red Wings did not seem to have the same jump the whole night.  Admittedly, I missed a good portion of the game while out at a dinner.  However, from what I saw, it wasn’t like against Toronto, but it was a mediocre effort.  We’ve been over this.  A mediocre effort isn’t good enough anymore with this team.
3. Crossbar – Hank keeps the train rolling.  He continues to be on fire, and I love how he is finally getting some respect in these parts.  He does not get talked up enough by the sports media or fans (including myself).  This guy is a model of consistency.  Maybe we don’t talk as much about him because we don’t marvel at his plays like we do Datsyuk or Lidstrom at times, but Z is for real, and is a special player.  Thanks Hank for showing up night-in and night-out.
4. Empty Net/Final Shot of the Night – Seriously NHL.  Your review process blows.  Intent to blow the whistle is atrocious.  I can’t even begin to write about this tonight.  I’m livid.  At least it wasn’t Brad Watson who made that call tonight…

Game Notes:

1. Jimmy Howard is once again starting in net.  Osgood is still battling the flu, so Daniel Larsson has been recalled from Grand Rapids to fill that bench-warming, face-off counting, backup goaltender spot.
2. Khan reports that the same lineup from the last 3 wins will be on the ice tonight. This means that while Maltby is healthy, he will be seeing some press-box time while Brad May and Drew Miller stay in.  This has to eat at Maltby a little bit.  Hopefully when he gets back in he’ll be pissed and playing for a more permanent spot.  This competition is good I think.  I can see why Babcock is sticking with the lineup though…if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
3. Marc Crawford is coaching the Dallas Stars now. Yes the man who brought hockey a new respect for hair-spray and general freak-outs while bench coaching.  He coached Colorado during the first few years of the hey-day of that rivalry.  He also was the coach who was accused of ordering our own Big Bert to sucker punch Steve Moore in the back of the head while coaching Vancouver.  Great track record…
4. Dallas has been mediocre so far this year, but Marty Turco has been turning it on of late.  The former Wolverine goaltender is 5-1-1 in his last 7 starts with decent peripheral statistics.  Fortunately, Joe Louis Arena has always seemed to be his kryptonite.  He manages to look so good elsewhere, and then be non-existent when he plays here.  Yay for home games.
5. The Red Wings do not have a regulation loss at home yet this year…dang it…hopefully I haven’t brought about a change tonight to that statement by mentioning it here.
6. Drew at NOHS has his Pointless Preview up again.  Always worth it.

1. Marty Turco plays well and keeps the game close for Dallas.  (Yes, in JLA this is very bold.)
2. Brad Stuart decides he is fed up with Kronwall getting all the offensive love and pots a goal of his own tonight.

Sybase 365 Marty Beard bullish on the mobility market, but not mobile advertising

When I hear Sybase, I naturally think large databases and perhaps analytics software but certainly not mobile messaging.

But as I learned last night, I was dead wrong: Sybase, through its mobile subsidiary Sybase 365 is the world’s largest inter-operator mobile messaging company.

This year, Sybase 365 expects to reach $200 million in revenues (up 14% from last year) or about 1/5 of the company overall revenues.

“We connect virtually all the 900+ mobile operators in the world and reach over 4 billion mobile phone users [out of 7 billion worldwide],” explains to me Sybase 365 President Marty Beard, speaking yesterday at TiE’s first entrepreneur week in Santa Clara, Calif.

For Beard, the closest competitors are Syniverse – which recently acquired Verisign’s mobile messaging business for $175 million in cash – and Ericsson IPX solution.

Mobile advertising has not lived up to its promise

By being at the centre of the world’s SMS and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) traffic, Sybase 365 can spot early trends in mobile commerce around the globe including hot areas like mobile CRM, mobile banking and mobile money transfer. Surprisingly, mobile advertising is not one of them.

“Most of the mobile advertising business has been around messaging, sending SMS or MMS to consumers and not banners or even ads inside these messages. Pure advertising on mobility has just not lived up to its billing at this point,” adds Beard.

Sybase saw traffic surge after Apple enabled MMS on iPhone

Another new trend in the mobility market is the uptake of videos transferred on mobile networks using MMS. This is especially true since Apple added the MMS feature to its latest iPhone 3GS device. ”When Apple enabled MMS, the traffic spiked 600% and video is a huge part of that,” said Beard.

Not to be outdone and left off the smartphone boat, Sony has announced its own smartphone entry with the XPERIA X10. Included features are summarized nicely by Gizmodo.

With a 1GHz Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm, 4-inch capacitive touch display, an 8.1 megapixel camera, and the lovely Rachael Android UI, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will be a great 2010 entry into the Android market for Sony Ericsson.

There seem to be some problems with it right now, though the model tested was only a pre-production build. Hopefully all of them will be ironed out by the time it hits the market and then, WATCH OUT, DROID! You will be having some stiff competition, indeed!

I must say that I am a fan of the design of the XPERIA. Nice curves, very aesthetically pleasing.

So we expect more layoffs (starting with the oldies, and experienced staff) more margin cuts, more mergers, more direct to retail cutting middlemen, more lawsuits, more suicides, more strikes, more disgruntled behaviour and more of the same old more.

What we’re not seeing is any smart and innovative market disrupting moves to curb this situation (and by that we don’t mean the easy and imagineless road to cost cutting; we mean a way to break away from competition based on price and move on to new profitable ventures).

1. Right Post – WTF Ericsson??  That was a learning point.  Let’s never clear it past Ryan Getzlaf when you are last man back again.  What a crappy decision.  What a way to come back afterwards though and play decent the rest of the game.  Forgiven cause of the win.  Moving on.

Left Post – News flash, Jimmy Howard let in a goal he shouldn’t have.  He played average or worse.  The Red Wings still won.  Welcome back to reality and a backup goaltender.  I will say though, he didn’t scare the crap out of me most of the time, and really, he is seeming a bit better over time.  I’m encouraged.  I’m not sold and ready to think he’s a future #1 by any means, but I’m encouraged for our backup situation still.
3. Crossbar – Drew Miller was solid for the 2nd game in a row.  Solid contributions on the 4th line and on the PK.  Pick-ups like him are the reason we’re the Red Wings and they are the Ducks.  Did you notice the time the Wings 4th line got and what they seemed to do with it.  Compare this to Anaheim’s complete reliance on getzlaf-perry-ryan-selanne…and nobody else.  Our DEPTH, even with Franzen, Filppula and Williams out, is still so much better than other teams.  It feels good to feel that way again.
4. Empty Net Goal/Final Shot of the Night - Henrik Zetterberg is on fire.  Enjoy this ride.  He had 5 points tonight with 2 G and 3 A.  What a performance and what a roll this guy has been on recently.  Z, thank you for making me be in awe of a forward not named Pavel on this Red Wings team.  I love the Euro Twins.  We are spoiled as fans…simply spoiled.
