Erik Truffaz en escena

El recientemente creado dueto de Erik Truffaz+Murcof se estará presentando este mes de septiembre en el Lunario del Auditorio Nacional, en una única fecha. Para aquellos que conocieron a Truffaz como solista, esta es una excelente oportunidad de escuchar su nuevo estilo, que si bien no se aleja demasiado de su perfil original, crece bastante con las mezclas y la tecnología que se le incorpora.

Erik Truffaz es uno de los trompetistas de jazz más reconocidos de la actualidad, que recientemente formó equipo con el productor y músico mexicano Murcof, para crear una combinación electrónico-acústica que está llamando mucho la atención. No se sabe hasta ahora si es sólo un proyecto temporal, por lo que es mejor no dejarlo pasar.

This is one more portrait of jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz.

I was trying to catch the music in the image or at least to give a feeling of it.

In the past I attempted to do several pictures of my friend while he was palying the trumpet and I always found it quite difficult.

Mostly because he is always in motion with so many expressions following the music therefore it becomes a kind of challenge to get a nice composition with not too much of blur.

Those kind of pictures are done in the same conditions as sport photography and it requires many right elements to contribute to a good result.

I am still not satisfied of what I have done so far.

This picture is an opportunity to thank the new members of my photography page on FaceBook.

I know that most of you came because of my Benaras-Varanasi pictures and Erik’s last album is about the Eternal city.

“BENARES” is an amazing Indo-Western fusion of modern jazz with Indian classic performed by Indrani & Apurba Mukherjee, Malcom Braff and Erik Truffaz.

“Yay!” is the title of a track from this album.

This is another portrait of Christophe with the famous jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz in the background.

My friend Erik invited Christophe with whom he often performed to sing “L’un dans l’autre” on his album “Arkhangelsk”.

The link of the video with English subtitles shows the recording of this beautiful and touching song.

Le paradis est blanc (Heaven is white) is a metaphor that we can listen among those words of poetry.

Voici un autre portrait de Christophe au côté du célèbre trompettiste de jazz Erik Truffaz.

Mon ami Erik a invité Christophe avec lequel il s’est souvent produit à chanter  “L’un dans l’autre” sur son album “Arkhangelsk”.

This is a portait of my friend Erik Truffaz that I did a few days ago backstage after a concert.
I find difficult to take pictures of someone you know, it has to be faithful to the expressions, physical features and the soul that you have in mind and like most of the musicians Erik is always in motion, he doesn’t have any peculiar expression that I wanted to catch.
Among several shots I selected this one where he looks happy and peaceful like he oftenly is.
The treatment in chiaroscuro reminds Dutch portraits of the 18° and contrasts with the creativity of this jazz trumpeter who infuses so many elements of contemporary music into his compositions.

Erik travels a lot around the world where he gives many concerts and he comes often to Varanasi (Benaras).
His “love story” with the oldest living city in the world produced an album, “Benares” in 2008, my friend Gopal is proudly showing it in his little music store along the Ganges.

Of course I listen to the BENARES album everyday, which is a perfect Indo-Western fusion and which is so inspiring to me.

The CD cover is using the only picture I ever took in the sky while I was flying somewhere between Iran and Pakistan on my way to Delhi and this is funny in a way as I have a strong flight phobia since I am a child.

The box office is now open for the Cully Jazz Festival and here are some hot tips to make your choice of concerts ahead of the crowds. Small in size, the festival is huge in inspiration.

Over the years, the Cully Jazz Festival (March 27-April 4) has become the jazz connoisseur’s answer to the Montreux Festival, now considered to be as close to jazz as … baseball is to cricket.

This year Cully offers again the enjoyable jazz cocktail that has become its hallmark, with surprising musical discoveries from the world over alongside mainstream artists.

The result of the jazz panorama is that there is something for everyone, from the adventurous to the conventional, including more than 60 free concerts and nine DJ evenings.

This year’s prestige event will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the legendary “Blue Note” label (who brought us Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and more recently Wynton Marsalis and Cassandra Wilson). The “All Stars Night” on 31st March will be a concoction of five Blue Note artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including the world famous saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Ron Carter and pianist Jacky Terrasson.

Staying in the mainstream vein, Abdullah Ibrahim, the South African composer and pianist formerly known as Dollar Brand and often compared to Thelonius Monk (also a Blue Note artist), will be giving a rare solo performance. On one evening he will be playing with Talvin Singh, the Asian Underground tabla player of Madonna fame and Murcof for his hispano-electro sounds. On another he will be pitching into the beat boxer, Sly Johnson’s vocal escapades. Not to be missed.

To be exciting, a festival must also lead to discovery. See the artists who are heading for the big time and discover them first in Cully: Yaron Herman sets fire to the key-board, the Swiss group, Rusconi, are the quintessence of jazz dreaminess and Avishai Cohen’s trio produces a jazz that is upbeat, elegant and fierce.

Ladies are getting their voices heard as well. From the 78 year-old Buena Vista star, Omara Portuondo, to the 25 year-old Swiss sensation, Sophie Hunger, from the Celtic-sounding songs from Mali by Oumou Sangare to the squeaky Haitian blues by Canadian artist, Melissa Laveaux, the concerts will be mellifluous, but powerful. And don’t forget to keep a bit of space for Happy Heidi who will blow your blues away.

For nine days, the small village of Cully becomes a musical carousel. Every café, every venue, even the town church vibrate late into the night to the tune of the invited artists. And because Cully lies at the foot of the Lavaux vineyards (recently inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site), opportunities to sample local wines contribute to the merriment.

J’ai du mal à suivre le rythme d’un blog. Je devrais en avoir terminé depuis longtemps avec mes petites scènes shanghaiennes, mais, voilà, j’ai d’autres priorités et je ne suis pas suffisamment geek-blogueur pour m’astreindre à une production régulière de billets.

Je me propose donc de sauter quelques jours. Je reviendrai plus longuement, lorsque je serai dans l’analyse de ce que j’ai rapporté, sur le travail photographique que j’ai entrepris sur Shanghai. Même si la ville m’est de plus en plus familière, il m’a fallu quelques jours de réapprentissage et de réadaptation avant de me sentir vraiment opérationnel sur le plan photographique —à cela il faut rajouter une fatigue inhabituelle due à une rare accumulation de travail depuis des mois (mais faut-il s’en plaindre ..?) qui s’est traduite par une très mauvaise gestion de mon jet lag.
Bien que la priorité ait été la préparation de l’exposition à la galerie Beaugeste, en assurant notamment le suivi de la fabrication des tirages dans l’atelier de Roy Yang (sur du Hahnemulhe Photo Rag 310 que l’on a fait venir spécialement de Hong Kong), j’ai pu voler un peu de temps pour reprendre le fil de mon projet : en commençant par un portrait de Liu Ying Mei, la belle directrice de la galerie 140 sqm, puis en reprenant le fil de mes paysages à la chambre.
Je n’insisterai pas non plus sur les soirées au JZ Club dans Fuxing Xi Lu, avec notamment le trompettiste Érik Truffaz (très inspiré de Miles Davis mais dans une approche plus free) ou le guitar hero Mike Stern et sa gueule de belle gouape à la Mick Jagger (lui aussi passé par le band version électrique de Miles Davis dans les années 70); et j’en arriverai directement au vernissage de l’exposition Fengshui landscape le samedi 7 juin à la galerie Beaugeste.

L’idée de Jean Loh est d’essayer de combiner le travail que j’ai fait à Vassivière en m’inspirant de l’esprit du Tao avec quelques photographies issues de Voyage au pays du Réel qui ont un lien possible avec une interprétation géomancienne et philosophique du paysage. Les deux séries sont certes assez différentes sur le plan esthétique —j’aime distinguer ce qui relève d’une esthétique propre aux marches photographiques, et les grands paysages qui, eux, sont plus distanciés—, et pourtant au jeu qui consiste à deviner où c’est ?, je suis étonné de voir le nombre de gens qui, notamment sur la série Vassivière, sont dans une certaine confusion. Sans doute la preuve que le rapprochement n’est pas vain.
Le vernissage qui devait durer tout l’après-midi fut malheureusement perturbé par un déluge biblique. Vers 15h30, le ciel s’est obscurci soudain comme un jour d’apocalypse, et les cieux ont laissé choir leur flot. En quelques minutes, les rues ont été noyées sous dix centimètres d’eau et la ville s’est totalement arrêtée. Le Consul et l’Ambassadeur, qui étaient en route pour venir voir l’exposition, ont du se réfugier en chemin au bar d’un grand hôtel. Ceux qui étaient dans la galerie au moment du déluge sont restés, pour la plupart, en attendant que la pluie baisse d’intensité, mais personne d’autre n’a osé braver les éléments pendant toute la durée de l’orage.
Nous avons patienté en sirotant doucement du vin chinois tout à fait correct.
Du coup, nous avons du prolonger le vernissage au-delà de l’heure prévue, de façon à accueillir quelques fidèles qui tenaient malgré tout à être présents. En ce samedi de mousson, il n’y eut pas, loin s’en faut, le tour habituel des vernissages que j’évoquais dans un billet précédent.
