Road rage was something unheard of in this small city of Cochin till recently. If you thought that it can happen only in bustling metros and in western countries, you would be in for a surprise. People on the road are getting increasingly violent and impatient in their race against the ticking clock. The so called Road rage motto that says ‘anyone going faster than you is a maniac; anyone going slower than you is an idiot’ seems to work on our city roads as well! People indulging in fist fights and verbal duals have become a common sight on the city roads and in many cases, the traffic police on duty prefers to turn a blind eye to the whole incident, resulting in the hold up of vehicles including those on emergency services like the ambulance and the fire engines!

Bad roads and traffic congestion drives up the adrenalin and tension of those behind the wheels. The over speeding buses and the teenage bikers, who almost always have a penchant to ride on the wrong side and the pedestrians who remain blissfully oblivious of the happenings around add up to the driving woes. Stray cattle heads, overloaded heavy vehicles and unruly kids who run helter skelter during the morning peak hours make driving a nightmare in Kerala even for the well experienced drivers. The current festival season of Christmas, New Year and Sabarimala pilgrimage season have made matters worse.

Road rage can be prevented by creating awareness about traffic rules and regulations and ensuring better road facilities. To make up for those traffic snarls and hold ups on the way, the vehicle owners could set out for work a bit early instead of venting their frustration on the fellow drivers on the road. As they say it is better to be late than never; so do not risk your life and limb by indulging in rash driving and road rage.

Our Cochin State was a paradise on earth.

The statue you see in the old bus stand at Trichur is our Raja’s.

It comprised of Trichur and Ernakula distrits with Tripunithura as the capital. From any where inside the state, one can reach there and meet the Raja. We had our own anchal (postal) system, own judiciary, education, coins and police. Never any interference from Delhi. That is autonomy ! I want it back. Of course, postal system and coins can be common. Abolish IAS examinations. The system has degenerated into sycophants of ministers. I think every one will agree at heart, though many may not speak out Instead of Raja we can have an elected Governor who can continue till he is recalled by a majority of voters. Today the Governor has no attachment to the people of the state. As the MPs in my scheme (read “democratic disfunction”) will work without favouring any constituency, the economic development of any weak state will not suffer.

Take this opportunity to think afresh about state autonomy and Delhi imperialism. Let there be a hundred States !

Please respond without any hesitation.

FLAG

Some enthusiastic students of Maharaja’s college, Ernakulam, decided to hoist the Tricolour flag in the college, on 14.8.1947 midnight.

Somehow their plan was leaked to the authorities of Cochin State where the college is located.

As soon as the flag fluttered on top of the post in rain, goondas attacked the boys and they (students) were later arrested, I am not sure.

The king was free, not the people!

In Travancore State, the movement against the autocratic King and his wily Divan took a bloody turn when the people were mowed down like in Jalianwalla Bagh, by machine gun fire at Vayalar.

In Nizam’s land in Hyderabad, peoples’ war against the ruler was initially encouraged by the new Emperor in Delhi, but was later crushed by the military.

The freedom fighters under Subash Bose, who were Indian Army men held prisoners by Japan, earlier, were tried for treason by the Government in Delhi (after 14.8.1947) and convicted. What would they have done, if Bose was caught?

Those of the Indian Navy, who mutinied against the British rulers, were not spared either.

Even today, poor Manmohan Singh has to toe the dictates from Washington !

Who said we are free?

Veembur Mana To return to our narrative. Maternal grandmother (lady in white) had three brothers. Ma

Veembur Mana

To return to our narrative.

Maternal grandmother (lady in white) had three brothers. Marriage of the eldest brother was fixed; he was to marry the sister of my maternal grandfather. Before marriage he died.

Undeterred by this tragedy, the elders decided that the next in line marry her. God’s ways are strange. The would-be bridegroom too died. The elders were unmoved. The third son, Bhavadasan married my mother’s aunt. VBS is her grandson, Bhavadasan (junior) being elder and Krishnan, only one year elder to me, being the third. Like the brothers Karamazovs, the threesome are dissimilar to each other. They had two living sisters, Sreedevi and Savitry (both no more).

Being closely related, they took care of our monetary needs like school fees; from a loan interest we got our monthly budget of Rs.10. The compound surrounding the mud hut was full of areca nut trees. The fallen leaves were collected by ma and used as fuel. She would carry water from the faraway well (normally the well is attached to the kitchen and we draw water from the well, standing inside the kitchen).I have nonchalantly watched it, but never offered help. Now I see my wife working in the kitchen and her daughter watching TV. Is this a rule of nature?

We got a meagre quantity of rice from tenants. I would go to the farmers, enjoying the scenery en route, collect rice and bring it home in a country canoe. My elder brother being unconcerned, I became the father figure at the age of thirteen.

One day uncle (VBS’s father) told me we were entitled for ration card being below poverty line;as instructed, I went to the Tehsildar office some ten miles way, handed over the application, waited patiently till 4.50 pm, when, pitying my innocence and helplessness, the peon told the clerk to do the needful and I returned with the ration card !

Naraphan-short for Narayanaphan.

I don’t remember him. He was VBS’s grandfathr’s son by his second wife who was half mad. The whole property of Veembur Kadalayil became a matter of litigation with a Tamil Brahmin from whom heavy sums were borrowed for construction of the tile factory, the first in our area, which still stands near level crossing at Ollur railway station, and, for maintaining luxurious living (every time maternal grand mother came home, she was given a gold sovereign-a coin prevalent then). At one stage, the vakil of the opponent secretly visited our ancestor and advised him to deny in the court that he borrowed money; a Nambudiri’s word was taken as true even by a court in those days. A Nambudiri may never lie. True to tradition, the honest ancestor refused to lie and the whole property came into Tamil Brahmin’s hands.

Litigation continued. As he was educated, Naraphan shouldered the responsibility. By 6am train, he would leave for Ernakulam where the High Court is located. We can only guess the number of times the poor fellow travelled to Ernakulam, sometimes without pocket money, in the hope of ultimate success!

At long last, the gods smiled-he won the case but lost his life. To celebrate the victory, he ate sumptuously at a restaurant. It was cholera epidemic time. As soon as he returned home, he started vomiting. He died, his mad mother died and even VBS’s sister Gauri, still a girl, died……Triumph of Death over Life…

I have vague memories of attending pindam ceremony. (Why don’t we leave the dead alone?)

VBS’s father worked hard to keep the family going. He even worked as poojari at Pisharikal temple where tradition forbade us Kadalayil family members to do pooja.

And yet he was always cheerful and full of humour and wit. VBS was studying in college. His elder brother was in army (he was discharged for being sympathetic to the left-Britain ruled by proxy) and Krishnettan was in Ooty (as cashier in some restaurant-he became fair as a white man when he returned) Uncle and I were together. One day he was so upset that he told me “your mother is mad”.

I had learned to stoically suffer almost anything in this life. I must have looked like an idiot which I actually am.

Recently renovated, to be kochi’s best cinema experience, The Padma theatre, owned by shenoy’s group, is a disastrous structure lacking even basic facilities required for film goers. I happened to go for 12′o clock show on friday for Neelathamara release and had to face the worst experience of my life. For starters, the balcony ticket counter, situated in first floor is a glass enclosed oven without any ventilation, fan or AC, designed only for the purpose of torturing the ones standing in the queue. Second, there is no queue bars/grilles to prevent unruly elements from pushing into the queue. Shenoy’s group which takes pride in decades of experience in cinema and having three others theaters has obviously failed to learn basic lessons. It a far better idea to go some ‘B-centers’ like Muvattupuzha, Perumbavoor or Aluva which have excellent theaters like Issacs-Mariya, EVM Studio, Matha-Mathuriya or even Anns at little far Kothamangalam, rather than face the woes of Ernakulam traffic or Padma Pandemonium.

There’s a thing about Kochi that gives it a different feel from any other city I’ve been

There’s a thing about Kochi that gives it a different feel from any other city I’ve been to in India. It has something to do with the way its parts are spread across several islands; compartmentalized bits of Indian culture.

Mall on MG Road

On the mainland lies Ernakulam, which exudes some of the metropolitan vibe of the HiTec cities of the south, such as Bangalore and Hyderabad. It’s loud, dusty, hectic, with pollution-belching traffic clogging the streets and alleys. Air-conditioned malls, many dedicated to the wedding stalwarts of silk sarees and gold jewellery, line central MG Road; new constructions arise from barren lots in the side streets and there’s not a pedestrian crossing in sight.

Unloading sulpher

Then comes Willington Island, a long, narrow strip of land half a kilometer out to sea. It houses a part of India that is central to most coastal cities, but which is usually hidden from view: the commerical port, stockyards and warehouses, and a large naval base.

Another 500 meters across the waters lies Fort Cochin, officially part of the mainland, but with a distinct island feel. It’s the old colonial city. Narrow streets with stone buildings on either side, 16th century Portuguese churches, a Dutch cemetery, remains of the old fort, cannon in place, and plenty of facilities for the modern independent tourist: homestays, outdoor restaurants and the occasional internet cafe to complete the picture.

Fishing net

Along the northern coast gargantuan Chinese fishing nets are plunged into the water by four men crews, and at an informal fish market the daily catch is traded as fishermen motor their small crafts onto the beach. In the background, ferries ply between the half dozen main islands.

In Kochi you get to experience India in bits and pieces. It is like a thali with Ernakulam, the Fort and industrial areas served in small portions to be enjoyed one by one. Never too overwhelming, but containing everything you’d want.

Photo: Rajesh Parambil

Which is what a vast majority of God’s Own Men as well Women (not to mention Children!) must be wishing these days. This is all the more apparent in the city of Ernakulam which simply cannot cope with even the lightest spell of rains. A poor drainage system, chockablock with sewage is the chief culprit.

The recent downpour has had the hapless citizens left with hardly any option but to grin and bear it all. If this is the plight of roads, the condition of the open drains (aka canals) is hardly any better.

They dutifully carry all kinds of waste and sewage, as they sedately wind their way across the city. Also, most of them act as hosts to the obnoxious water hyacinth, which further block the free movement of the canal waters.

The recent rains have added to woes of the general populace in no small extent. For one, the mosquitoes which have lai permanent claim to these stagnant waters are having a field day, or rather night.

And if the ‘thulavarsham’ shows no signs of abating, the canals might simply decide to overflow their banks and cause mini-floods.

For more updates, watch this space.

Vrijdag 23 oktober 2009, Cochin.

—

This is what I feel about my life. A brand new taxi, driven by my three Seniors, indiscriminately for achieving their ends, without even paying for petrol, leaving me struggling to earn monthly CC.

My Life

Though I dont have any CC to remit, what I really meant was - meeting my own expenses. I was born in an upper-middle class family and always led a life of no responsibilities. But now things have changed. Upside down exactly. I got enrolled as an Advocate and is currently practising in Kerala High Court under a very reputed Senior advocate (widely known for his short temper).

Gone are those days when I could tell Appa’s clerk to deposit money in my bank account, because now he expects me to earn in millions and buy him Onam kodis since I am a High court lawyer and he is just a lower court clerk.

My senior pays me Rs. 4000/- per month, which honestly is a decent amount in High court standards. But what he fails to understand is that price of ‘Mubarrak Biriyani’ has gone up from Rs.30 for Full CB to Rs. 65 just in two years. Parotta and Pepper chicken is Rs.85. Not that I have only Biriyani and Pepper chicken, but the point is life in this big city is getting damn expensive, inclusive of even parking fees! How on earth I would survive on Rs.4000 when petrol and mobile bill itself come up to 1.5k per month ? Anyway, I learned the miss call tactics, which lately helped me cut my mobile bill into half, but again, what about petrol.? Last time when i went to make a representation (seek adjournment) before Debt recovery Tribunal and got back, a whole litre petrol was over because of CPI(M)’s BSNL Uparodam and subsequent traffic jam.

Another aspect is that I dont know to be a Yechi and cant claim travelling allowance or petty expenses like photostats from the firm. It may be my fault, but isn’t it the duty of Seniors to understand and take care of juniors.? Especially when they know that i’m not writing any petty vouchers or bills to defraud the firm as frequently done by others.? It is again disappointing to see a younger typist with 10th std certifictate, who cant type any faster than I can, is given a bigger pay cheque than one given to me. Shouldn’t they be concerned about practical difficulties of a junior lawyer apart from chanting old slogans like ‘Work like a horse, live like a hermit!’ Ya, as if there are so many mango trees in city of kochi to pluck and feed my hunger and be a hermit.

Life gets worse when i think of my friends who showed the wisdom of joining the corporate world. Not that i want their job or their fat salary, but however, they would be living a far better life than me, especially with friends and all, and not like a hermit. The misery is that I don’t have many friends at High court nor do i intend to make many more. Firstly, it’s not easy to make friends in High court as the one you see today wont be there tomorrow, and Secondly, not many can be befriended in Eight-floors-concrete-jungle where most are worse than wild animals lurking in dark gowns to strike down a junior lawyer like me and eat the flesh. I tell you, the worst in this profession has not yet happened. The degeneration of ethics and solicitation of briefs are just the beginning. If the financial predicament of junior lawyers are not immediately addressed, i’ d say liquidation of this noble profession is certian.

Whatever.. I see this whole experience as an investment. An investment to future, brighter career. A junior lawyer should invest his time. It is his capital for future growth. My appachan, a wise man, long before he got alzheimers and joined the majority, told me that ‘Even those who wait patiently in the queue would be served lunch.’ Though I’m not sure whether it would apply to profession of lawyers, i think i’d rather follow him than deign to haggle to earn my CC.

So for now i’d be a taxi plying pro bono senioro and hope that life would turn around some day.

P.S : I wrote this blog 8 months ago, but left it in drafts without posting. I’m doing it now coz my patience has payed off and I’m earning my CC. Not just CC but also extras for LIC, chitty etc. Now i’m not just a taxi for my seniors but also a Taxi Plying for Hire..

The 6th edition of Barcamp kerala is scheduled to be held at Rajagiri College Campus, Ernakulam on

The 6th edition of Barcamp kerala is scheduled to be held at Rajagiri College Campus, Ernakulam on 11th October, 2009.

For some , the concept of Barcamp would be alien ( few months back i was in that catagory!!) so a few words on it is in order here.

Barcamps fall in to the category of ”unconferences” ,ie they are not bound by the rules and customs followed by the usual meetings, where every thing had to be done in a predefined format. The best words that describe Barcamp is “NO SPECTATORS , ONLY PARTICIPANTS” .Here any participent can come up with a sessionon his prefered topic provided it is thought to be worth listening by others present at the barcamp. If a session is boring we are free to walk out from it.But everyone who attends it must support it one way or the other.

The first Barcamp Kerala was organised in November 2007 at Technopark after that it had been to CUSAT(BCK2 in February 08 and BCK3 in December 08) ,IIMK(BCK4 in January 2009) and it was back in technopark for BCK5 in May 09 and now it comes to kochi in its 6th edition .

There are no registration fees or any charges for a barcamp as this is a user-generated conference .Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join.

Hope to be a part of BCK 6.

Few days back while at Ernakulam i spotted two pieces of unusually shaped(for Indian standards) smal

Few days back while at Ernakulam i spotted two pieces of unusually shaped(for Indian standards) small car of FIAT at a TATA – FIAT outlet alongside a TATA nano. The size of the car made me feel that it is something in line with the nanos but this time from FIAT.

The shape and look made me curious about the model .The curiosity made me to visit the official site of FIAT India, there i found out that the car was FIAT 500 a reincarnation of the retro classic Fiat 500.But a surprising truth was waiting for me “Indian price is 1487500(kochi)”.I checked if there is any decimal point before the last zero ,no there wasn’t any. This increased my curiosity on this” small car” or “Lifestyle Car”(A term which i found repeatedly user for describing it in my reading) and left out in the web of information to explore it.Here i would like to share with you the facts that i came across during this exploration.

According to the literature at the fiat India website FIAT 500 made its first appearance in Indian automobile arena on 18th July 2008.As stated earlier it is the reincarnation of Classic FIAT 500 which was originally designed way back in 1957 by Dante Glocosa in Turin.FIAT 500 in its new incarnation had many coveted accolades to its credit like European car of the year 2008 award.

The price might be the reason behind it not becoming a common sight on Indian roads. This heavy price tag is attributed to fact that it is imported as CBU(Completely Built Units) which attracts many types of cost including the taxes and levies.

Now let us have a peek into the features of this “small” car.The variants available now are the 3-door LOUNGUE and SPORTS with null difference in their price tags.FIAT 500 is powered by 75bhp Fiat’s State -of-Art 1.3 litre 16-valve multijet turbo diesel engine. On the safety front it comes with 7 airbags(a first in its class) that include a knee bag.The level of security it provide to the passenger have earned it a5-Star EURO NCAP Safety rating.

FIAT also provide us the option of styling our fiat 500 the way we want by their FIAT 500 Personalisation Program.

We can hope to see more FIAT 500s on Indian roads in future ,But still the price tag is a constraint.

I was literally petrified and terrified when I received reports on bomb explosion at Ernakulam Civil

I was literally petrified and terrified when I received reports on bomb explosion at Ernakulam Civil Station, immediately I browsed through most of the malayalam news channels. All the channels and news portals were televising detailed description regarding the explosion like the cause for the explosion, medium used etc. But I was greatly relieved when I recognized no human life was harmed. At 10:00 pm I an eminent news channel reporting and offering detailed description about the chemicals that are used for bomb explosion. The channel’s testimony goes like this “usage of an Embedded System can provide an easy control and would result in successful explosion process.” What foolishness is this? I would rather call it as a journalistic stupidity. What are these kinds of news persons trying to convey? By making the above said facts public they are setting simple ways before the terrorists to create demolition and devastation to a large degree. This is similar to a bird that destroys its own nest. If ponder and ponder right we are the sole cause of our insecurity both in national and state level. I kindly plead to the news persons and the media officials to don’t let out such exclusive details through your media. Just provide a flash news citing that a bomb explosion took place but no injuries and some chemicals were found at 4th and 5th floor(don’t mention name of the chemical). In my view this would be healthy for the public.
