I’m a big fan of the Ghostbusters. I love everything about it from the characters, the equipme

I’m a big fan of the Ghostbusters. I love everything about it from the characters, the equipment, the movies, the cartoon shows and the video games. I can talk, discuss, dream, read and watch them anytime. However, as geeky and as truthful as I am to the franchise, I noticed something very unsettling about the Ghostbusters and it has been bothering me for a few years now. It’s something that may not be a concern to others but as a true fan, I feel disappointed by it. No, I’m not talking about Ghostbusters III, I’m talking about Winston Zeddemore.

Often considered to be the skeptic and spiritual layman of the group, Winston Zeddemore (Played by Ernie Hudson) is a member of the Ghostbusters who may lack any scientific knowledge like his other three members but his supportive attitude and sense of judgement and reasoning is what makes him valuable to the team. From the beginning, there were only three members: Peter Venkman, Ray Stanz and Egon Spengler. All three of them were into the studies of paranormal activities and decided one day to should start a company that deals with busting ghosts- and so the Ghostbusters was born. Business was good but as time went on, they felt the need to hire another person to help increase the manpower and so they advertised it on the newspaper. Winston saw the ad and was hired on the spot- making him an fourth member of the group.

Notice I didn’t mention the word “official”, which raises the following question: is Winston Zeddemore an official member of the Ghostbusters? Well, he was hired by the Peter, Ray and Egon as mentioned earlier, making him seem nothing more than a worker drone. But if you think about it, he is hired to strap onto the Proton Pack and busts ghosts rather than staying at the Firehouse doing desk jobs so that makes him an official member right? Well, not according to the following evidence I found here.

The first evidence I have is a screenshot of a Ghostbusters game for the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive that was released in 1990. As shown on the left, you can select any characters you want except for Winston. This game is based on the first movie even though the plot and ghosts were altered tremendously but even so, why isn’t Winston being included to the game? I know he joined the Ghostbusters late in the movie but come on, is there a good reason why he shouldn’t be in the game? I really think it’s not fair but thankfully, Winston did make an appearance for all upcoming Ghostbusters games including the most recent one which I will get to later on.

Now for the sequel. Ghostbusters II came out in 1989 and by then, everyone should know that Ghostbusters consists of four members: Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston. The poster on the right is a living proof and I’m sure you’ve seen it before. It was used in cinemas and later found its way as a VHS cover and a DVD cover. It’s all good right? But wait, what about this other version below?

Again, no Winston! What gives? What happened? The eagle-eyes may notice that this picture of Peter, Ray and Egon were taken from the first movie and not the second one. Why use materials that were not included in the movie its presenting? Why not just use screenshots from the sequel itself? And if that’s not enough, check out this DVD cover for the first Ghostbusters.

This DVD cover has all four of them, so why Winston was not included on the second one? It makes no sense at all. In fact, I think they got the covers mixed up. If Winston came out late as a Ghostbusters, the first movie should use the left DVD cover and not the other way around. Whoever’s in charge of this was definitely not thinking straight.

The last evidence I have are the T-shirts. Great artwork, but no Winston:

Frowning face

When I looked at these merchandise, I was convinced that Winston is likely to be just a hired help and not treated as a true member. Reminds me of Jason Newsted of Metallica, a favorite bassist of mine who joined the band to replace a valued member who tragically died in a bus accident. From the beginning, he claimed he was never treated as an official member in the band but as a new guy- hence the nickname Jason Newkid. Even his band members agreed to that fact. There was three of them and Jason. He was often bullied by his band members and the poisons include telling everyone he was gay, charging room service to his hotel room and tricked him into thinking wasabi as mint sauce. This torture had never stopped haunting him until sometime in the year 2001, Jason couldn’t stand it anymore and announced he was leaving the band. It broke my heart real bad. I hope this won’t happen to Winston. Like I said before, I love the Ghostbusters and it makes me happy everytime I see all four of them together.

About two months ago, I played Ghostbusters: The Video Game on the XBOX360 and it’s one of my favorite games this year. It’s a great feeling being able to experience a brand new Ghostbusters after twenty years of absence. I love it. In fact, I’m playing it on the PC three times now. One of the best things I like about this game is how well they treat Winston. He has more dialogue and appearance in the game which really show us a lot more of the character. He interacts more with the Ghostbusters, follows the team most of the time and his ability to think logically not scientifically in given situation (Which he is good at).

This is exactly what I’m talking about. This is exactly how they should treat Winston Zeddemore and I hope they will continue doing so in any upcoming video games or movies.

This concludes my personal thoughts of good ol’ Winston. I’m not sure if this is an existing debate in the Ghostbusters community because I’ve never heard anyone mentioning it so I thought it’ll be a great chance for me to address this. To this day, it still puzzles as to why Winston is often excluded in covers, posters and even T-Shirts? Are these people racist or something? Being mean to black people? Someone please tell me! Winston Zeddemore may not be my absolute favorite Ghostbusters nor the brainiest one in the group but he is definitely a remarkable hero. He’s most certainly a valuable member and deserves some credit for his ghostbustin’ skills. Here’s to Winston, Peter, Ray and Egon.

When three parapsychology professors find themselves unemployed, they decide to start a new business

When three parapsychology professors find themselves unemployed, they decide to start a new business together capturing ghosts.

Directed by – Ivan Reitman

Written by – Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis

Starring – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton, Ernie Hudson, David Magulies, Slavitza Jovan

The change of seasons is taking its toll on everyone in my neck of the woods. The kids are off and on sick, that obnoxious MEH feeling that comes with the total lack of sunshine is kicking in for me and my battle to quit smoking is troublesome. I haven’t found much time, or energy for that matter, to sit down and watch movies. Once my son got sick this week though, he demanded that we watch Ghostbusters and I’m glad he did. He was a good time to sit back and watch a hilarious movie that I haven’t seen in so long.

Seeing this one again reminded me of how much I like Bill Murray with his sarcastic, smart-ass yet lovable all at the same time personality. The movie flows well, the performances are well done, the soundtrack is amazing and the only thing that doesn’t really stand the test of time is some of the special effects. But they can upgrade that for Ghostbusters 3 right? C’mon, we all know you wanna make it anyway!

The Ghostbusters ready for action.

What can you say about the Ghostbusters that everybody doesn’t already know. If you haven’t seen this movie then I’m calling you out on it and questioning your love of movies! Peter, Ray and Egon start up the Ghostbusters. Their jobs, to catch ghosts. Of course it wouldn’t be a movie without a large problem to overcome and that’s where Gozer comes in. Insert scientificy jibble jabble about how Gozer is an ancient demon thing or something and then have Bill Murray scream something about going and kicking its butt and you’re off. Eventually the workload becomes too much and Winston is hired on and that’s just about the time that the EPA gets involved. They wind up shutting down the power to the Ghostbusters containment system which releases all the ghosts back into New York and sets it all up for the final showdown with Gozer, and of course the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man!

So destructive and yet so tasty!

Seriously, a classic comedy that everyone should have already seen. I think it works so well because of the trio of Akyroyd, Murray and Ramis. Those three together play off each other so well and with perfect comedy timing. Take any one of them out and you’d lose the whole movie. Annie Potts as the annoyingly voiced secretary has her moments but poor Ernie Hudson just doesn’t seem to get enough time to have fun. Sigourney Weaver is looking good in the movie and I always love her back and forth with Murray in the film, plus she has such a rocking apartment! And of course there’s Rick Moranis. Such a dork but you just wanna hug and squeeze him.

I’m glad the kids liked it so much even if the librarian at the beginning scared them a little bit. Although it does make me feel old to think that movies I watched as a young kid are now some of the same films my kids watch. In the same respect, it’s good to know that they appreciate the classics so I don’t have to watch Hannah Montana.

Under the mistletoe – Will

Galet men sant!

Quickly think of the coolest movie you have ever seen, with great special effects for its time.

Now think of the coolest movie theme that you have ever heard.

If you thought A New Hope, you were bang on.

If you thought Ghostbusters, you were still pretty much bang on. Ghostbusters was the brain-child of Chubby Dan Aykroyd and Harold ‘Egon’ Ramis. It had cool dialogue, it had cool music, it had cool special effects, it had Stay Puft destroying New York and it was the only legitimate good thing out of the 80’s barring of course, Back to the Future.

Missed one, though.

Yeah, so Ghostbusters was an amazing movie and the sequel was amazing and Ghostbusters the Video Game was one of the most amazing video games ever, better than even Half-Life, I’d say because Half-Life wasn’t as funny and the slime wasn’t as cool. Also Ghostbusters had better guns.

One can mention here, that the NES version does not qualify as a game, and if you want, you can watch a review(18 minutes long on google video) of the game. Just for kicks, after you are done with the game, the final screen reads:

So you know all *their* base belong to us.

Ghostbusters also spawned two amazing cartoon series which I used to watch when I was a kid.

Do, Ray, EGON!

And they eat gods for breakfast.

Also, nothing can be uncool if it leads to:

Hopefully a third movie will be out soon, and will be righteously awesome. Who you gonna call?

Quickly think of the coolest movie you have ever seen, with great special effects for its time. Now

It had an 'African-American' too, but he don't photograph well with *that* background

Also, Ernie Hudson was pretty kick arse and the shit he saw in that movie, made him go WHITE!

And because he's white, now he has a suit and wine

This review by Paul -all part of my 31 Days of Horror.

Send me your horror film reviews.

You’ll have to bear with me here readers, this is a hidden gem! I found it on Halloween night after a nights graft in the pub. I came home, feet throbbing, mind far too sober for a friday night, and slammed on the magic Virgin TV box-thingy in the corner with lots of flashing lights.

‘Lets check out the 99p offers shall we?’ I suggested to myself, had a vote, and won.

This was the one that drew my eye instantly. I love Snoop, dont get me wrong, but I’ve never really given him much wieght as an actor (see Mr. Bones or Dr. Bones, it’s so shit I can’t remember the title). I paid my money, made me smoke, cracked the stella and settled down.

It was ace.

The film opens with a fantastic anime sequence, lasting about 10 mins if memory serves me right (regular readers will know that my eyes kinda go quite frequently). It was really top quality and so unexpected I couldnt take my eyes off the screen. Jaw dropping stuff, even Manga Snoop looked a nice balance of cool/evil/unspoken threatening. Then the film moved into the next phase, live action filming, but the film has an old style quality to it. The three interlinking ’short scary stories from The Hood’ have the look of the 70’s Twilight Zone:The Movie. Bright jumpers, off-colour orange everywhere, ya know?

To be honest, I was outta phase when the live action was on, like stepping through the Time Tunnel, but each story was interspersed with more anime, a story within a story (I see plans within plans). Wish I could tell you more, but I can’t. Take my word for it, it was 99p and it really kicked arse. Seek it out.

It was a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there…

Furnished with a cameo by Mr. T, Penitentiary II features bad acting and the rivalry of Half Dead an

Furnished with a cameo by Mr. T, Penitentiary II features bad acting and the rivalry of Half Dead and Too Sweet.

One of my favorite pastimes is watching bad movies. If it’s on cable and has one star, I’m in; Killer Clowns from Outer Space? Check. Where do I sign? Penitentiary II featuring Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson? Probably watched it 15 times. In fact, more that one later…

Most terrible movies work for me except for Hulk Hogan’s abomination, No Holds Barred, from 1989. Seriously, few things were as menacing as watching Hogan’s movie nemesis, Zeus. The bald head with a Z carved on the side the temple augmented by crossed eyes was overwhelming for me as a nine-year old. Then, Vince McMahon had the audacity to add him as a regular on WWE programming. Zeus was such an ugly guy that I swore off the WWE for seven months until he left.

Unfortunately, we’re getting to that point with numerous teams around the NFL. They are nearly to gruesome or boring to watch. After one of the worst slates of 1pm games in league history, it’s obvious that the number of bad teams is staggering. Let’s examine some of the weekend’s lowlights.

Carolina 20, Washington 17

Leading 7-0 in the second quarter and backed up at their own 3, Jason Campbell hands off wide to Clinton Portis, who promptly gets swallowed up in the endzone for a safety. Running wide on 2nd and 8 from your own three are we? For an encore, the Redskins blew a 17-2 lead and lost 20-17 to the previously winless Panthers.

By the way, Washington’s game versus Kansas City this week marks the sixth straight week the Redskins will play a winless team.

NY Giants 44, Oakland 7

JaMarcus Russell fumbled three times; adding to his resume for perhaps one of the worst seasons ever played by an NFL quarterback. He is having the reverse Brady/Marino year. Just when you think he can’t regress as a player, he proves us wrong. Even Giants backup quarterback David Carr got in on the fun by rushing for a 12 yard touchdown.

Of course, the proverbial cherry on top for the Raiders is the alleged assault charge looming over the head of Oakland coach Tom Cable for breaking the jaw of an assistant.

Cleveland 6, Buffalo 3

Almost seemingly upset at the notion of playing an exciting game a year ago in Buffalo, the Browns and Bills offered one of the decade’s biggest stink bombs. Not to be outdone by its 8-0 win over Buffalo in 2007, Cleveland defeated Buffalo last Sunday without scoring a touchdown.

When the victorious quarterback posted a 2 for 17 performance and a 15.1 quarterback rating, something is terribly wrong.

Dallas 26, K.C. 20 (OT)

Look, I like Miles Austin but he’s not THAT good. Austin ran up the best receiving day in Cowboys history during the Dallas’ 26-20 win in overtime. The Chiefs redefined bad tackling by missing two tackles on each of Austin’s two touchdown catches. Another dreadful defensive effort when in it mattered.

In other news, the Chiefs are on quietly on one of the worst runs in NFL history. According to the good folks at profootballreference.com, they have lost 28 of their last 30 games since they were 4-3 in 2007, which almost seems unfathomable.

Minnesota 38, St. Louis 10

Not to be outdone by Kansas City for worst team in Missouri, Minnesota dismantled St. Louis by four touchdowns. The winless Rams’ average margin of defeat is 22 points per game. As AC/DC would say, the Rams are a runaway train, running right off the track.

Sadly, that’s only the beginning. Tampa, Tennessee, and Jacksonville also got bombed by double digit scores. Seemingly, the NFL has become a league of good teams bludgeoning bad teams. The NFC East serves as living proof of the league’s imbalance.

Philadelphia’s three wins have come against Carolina, Kansas City and Tampa Bay, who have combined for one win. Meanwhile, division mate New York is 5-0, having crushed Oakland, Kansas City and Tampa Bay in its last three outings.

Dallas’ Tony Romo owns six touchdown passes this season. Five of those TD tosses came against the winless Chiefs and Bucs.

Translation: we’re living in a golden age for terrible teams. Instead of shying away from the ugliness of the NFL like I did with Zeus years ago, I’m not going to make the same mistake twice. I’m going to embrace these teams as if they are collectively the newest installment of the Penitentiary series. TMW will debut The Culverhouse Index, a power poll of the league’s worst teams. Without further ado, here we go.

St. Louis (0-5): Making last year’s Lions look like the ’76 Raiders

Kansas City (0-5): Man for man, barely better than St. Louis. Yet, they have the look of a college team at times.

Oakland (1-4): When is someone in that organization going to understand that Russell is not the quarterback of the future? Is a 2-14 season going to be enough?

Cleveland (1-4): They should give Sunday’s win back. Scoring a hearty 11 points per game. Somehow, that isn’t last in the league.

Tampa Bay (0-5): A newbie at quarterback in Josh Johnson and one of the league’s worst pass defenses.

Buffalo (1-4): They should receive two losses for losing to the Browns at home without allowing a touchdown.

Detroit (1-4): Still not very good but they will at least fight teams now.

Washington (2-3): Every game they play should end at 17-14. Football to sleep by.

Carolina (1-3): They were fixing to get blown out at home and drop to 0-4. However, the Redskins gave them some much needed help.

Tennessee (0-5): Not only did they lose their best defensive player (Albert Haynesworth) but they also lost their defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and replaced him with Chuck Cecil, who had never been a defensive coordinator before. Subsequently, they can’t get a pass rush and rank 31st in the league against the pass.

*The poll’s name honors former Tampa Bay Bucs owner, the late Hugh Culverhouse, who ran one of the worst teams in league history, the winless ’76 Bucs.

Ten Things We Learned in Week 5:

Learn from the new Culverhouse Index: You are running a big risk on your fantasy rosters by using players from the aforementioned poll. Granted, Chris Johnson and Steven Jackson are amongst the backs that play for some of these dreadful teams. However, what good are these guys if their team is down by 20 every week?

Tom Brady isn’t Tom Brady yet: Brady’s lifetime record versus Denver fell to 1-6 but perhaps the most alarming items from Sunday’s game were two missed pass plays for New England. Brady missed a touchdown pass to Randy Moss and then late in the fourth quarter missed on a seam pattern to Wes Welker that could have gone the distance. His timing is off considerably.

Contract years are a big motivator: Cedric Benson busted through the Ravens defense for 120 yards and a score. He is the first running back to rush for 100 yards against Baltimore in three years. Benson just so happens to be in a contract year. All of a sudden, he is a respectable running back. Hmm…

The Eagles regular season schedule begins on October 26: Philly has only played one quality opponent (New Orleans). The first somewhat respectable opponent for the Eagles will be Washington on the road, Monday night, October 26.

Denver is for real….we think: Kyle Orton, Brandon Marshall and Knowshon Moreno helped carry Denver to victory over New England in overtime last week. Orton is a steady game-manager thus far; while Marshall is slowly emerging yet again; and Moreno is getting his sea legs in his rookie year.

Keep your eye on Chad Henne: Everyone is raving about Henne’s performance from Monday night. He fits the Parcells criteria, which includes being a four year starter in college. His biggest asset perhaps is the wildcat which is slicing and dicing rush defenses again; making it all the more easier for him to throw over the top of defenses

Teams are determined to let “Minnesota QB #4” beat them: Outside of playing Green Bay, the Vikings are another team that has played a lightweight schedule. With tough run matchups upcoming versus Baltimore and Pittsburgh, Minnesota QB #4 will be forced to use his aging but yet still effective arm to beat them. Thus far, he has been able to do it but it remains to be seen whether he can make it happen versus teams that will punch back.

Dre Bly made a foolish mistake: After intercepting Atlanta’s Matt Ryan, Bly went all Deion Sanders and started celebrating about 60 yards before scoring. Roddy White stripped Bly of the ball soon after, leading to the season’s most embarrassing play to date.

The Eagles are loaded: Regardless of the competition, the Eagles are going to score points this season. Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson are flyers on the outside; Brent Celek is in store for a career year; and LeSean McCoy looks like a budding mini-Westbrook. Even with Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook aging, it looks it will be sunny in Philadelphia for quite some time. Yes, I know. It was a lame reference to the television show.

Keep your eye on Donovan McNabb and Eli Manning: McNabb returned from a rib injury; while Manning managed his plantar fasciitis. However, both teams were able to ease the quarterbacks into action versus two league’s doormats. As the season wears on, those injuries could be a problem. Adjust your fantasy rosters accordingly.

Week 6 BPITW Poll:

Last week’s rankings in parenthesis.

Adrian Peterson (1) – Through five games, AP has seven touchdowns and is well on pace to top his career best of 12.

Peyton Manning (2) – Easily the NFL’s MVP to date, playing the finest football of his career.

Ronnie Brown (7) – This is not the Dolphins of 2008 but they are a scrappy bunch, led by Captain Wildcat himself.

Reggie Wayne (5) – Attached at the hip with Manning, one of fantasy football’s best through the first quarter of the season.

Andre Johnson (8) – He steamrolled Cardinal defenders a week ago; too bad his team can’t finish drives from the one yardline.

Drew Brees (3) – The more Brees throws, the more it will help your fantasy team. The less Brees throws, the more it will help the Saints go deep into the playoffs.

Maurice Jones-Drew (4) – Don’t make this man anger Jacksonville. He’s one of your few good players.

Cedric Benson (N/A) – I’m stunned he is on this list.

Steve “NYG” Smith (10) – The other Steve Smith is 49th in standard fantasy scoring; while this Smith is Eli’s go to guy.

Ben Roethlisberger (9) – Hopefully he stays awake against Cleveland. They tend to be boring to play against.

Video of the Week:

As mentioned earlier, Penitentiary II is a brilliantly awful film but few things are as awesome as blaxploitation films. A new movie called Black Dynamite debuts this weekend and the trailer is pure gold.

(Season 4, Episode 5)

I know I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but sometimes I wonder if we don’t have more people reading TV Squad than Heroes has viewers. And so I want to keep reminding fallen fans who may have jumped ship over the past two not-so-great seasons that things are going much better this season.

There’s a better balance in each episode than there’s been. In the past few weeks, we’ve been sticking to mostly three storylines per week. This time around, we checked in on Peter, Claire and Sylar (after his unearthing last week). They’re allowing the characters room to breathe and be themselves, rather than just rushing into the next adventure.

It was character growth and development that I’d missed the most, and we’re finally getting it. Zachary Quinto was fantastic this episode, and even Hayden Panettiere showed an inkling of range. Oh, who am I kidding, she was as wooden as ever, but that’s why we like her … right?

–>to continue reading, follow the link over to the full article on TV Squad

Bustin’ must make film director / producer Ivan Reitman feel good.

Why? Well he directed the first two Ghostbusters film and now Bloody Disgusting “have straight up confirmed, 100%, without a shadow of a doubt” that Ivan father of Jason is in fact attached to direct Ghostbusters 3.

You know what Bloody Disgusting? I am ready to believe you.

However he hasn’t decided whether or not he really wants to direct, yet.

Apparently, the sequel takes place when the paranormal researchers “reopen” their ghost removal service after it has been closed for quite a few years. As previously reported, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver have all confirmed their involvement.

The previous plot was rumoured to have a younger Ghostbusters crew taking over the business. I am not sure if that is still the case, and I would much rather see the old gang back together again for more than just an extended cameo.

As to Ivan Reitman directing the third one I am just not sure. His last film Super Ex-Girlfriend was not so good but Evolution was okay. I personally feel a director with a different set of skills may be better, but what do I know.

I just hope Ramis and Aykroyd can get in shape for the film. No one wants to see a chubby Spengler!

What we have here is a vaguely competent direct-to-video movie (by erotic movie director Jim Wynorski as Jay Andrews) and a better-than-average spot-the-borrowed-movie-footage-and-sets game. The movie ends up being surprising fun with gleefully awful dialogue, a President with a Depressing Rectangle Office, a hilarious stealth fighter / F-16 duel and Ice-T looking more like a bad-tempered plumber than an ace fighter pilot. I enjoyed it, but I was probably in the right mood.

This movie contains sexual swear words, adult dialogue and violence, some strong but no gore.

Men även andra kära spöken.

(Frank Marshall, 1995)

September 6, 2009

by Joel Crary

“Congo” was a film I remember my friends in high school and I appreciating for its comic tone, specifically for the scene in which Delroy Lindo, costumed as a junta military leader, screams at a philanthropist to stop eating his sesame cake. When I put the film on for the first time in a decade-plus, I was expecting to be let down by time’s effect, but was surprised to see that “Congo” still works as a b-grade actioner, with performances that are laughably hammy when they need to be. It’s a film that features “The Evil Dead’s” Bruce Campbell meeting an untimely end in its first scene, and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s” Tim Curry playing a Romanian obsessed with finding a lost city. I choose to take it for what it is.

In addition to a decent turn from a laser-wielding Laura Linney, its other principle part is played by a gorilla named Amy, who is clearly a person in a suit capped with facial animatronics that cast doe-eyed looks at her surroundings. In fact, all of the gorillas look astonishingly un-gorilla-like, so much so that it plays effectively as camp. There are some funny gags as Amy uses a sign language machine to verbalize what she thinks, emitting the factual tone of a 10-year-old girl administering an automated telephone survey.

Amy’s keeper, Dr. Peter Elliot (Dylan Walsh), is looking for grant money to continue his research. Now that he’s taught Amy to talk, he wants to return her to the wild in order to spread her new-found knowledge to other animals. Amy’s home is in the Congo, and Elliot agrees to have the probably ill-intentioned Herkermer Homolka (Curry) fund the trip. A problem with Homolka’s credit card sends telecommunications scientist Karen Ross (Linney) to the rescue. She’s looking to find her former fiancé and return with a diamond powerful enough to run a leading-edge kind of communications satellite for her company.

This is all quite ludicrous, but fun. The group runs into a heap of political trouble once they hit Africa. Given the sight of terrorist bombs going off at the airport, crossing the border into then-Zaire seems to be a veritable suicide mission. Luckily, they’ve hired the cigar-chomping Captain Munro Kelly (Ernie Hudson), the type of man who seems to speak any language in any required accent. After diverting heat-seeking missiles away from their plane with flare guns over the border, the group parachutes into the Congo and find that their troubles have only just started.

Homolka wants to find King Solomon’s mines in the lost city of Zinj. Unfortunately, Zinj is guarded by a species of gorilla undiscovered by man. Aggressive by nature, they attack the group in bloody fashion, swarming like Morlocks in the underground caverns of George Pal’s “The Time Machine”. In one scene, machine gun turrets are set up to fire automatically when motion sensors are triggered in the jungle. I was reminded of a similar scene in “Aliens”, though that film keeps the pursuing creatures off camera, heightening the tension of their appearance and the mystery of their intelligence. This flick goes right for the gory detail, making the scent of singed gorilla flesh almost palpable.

“Congo” came out a couple of years after the phenomenon of “Jurassic Park” assured that Michael Crichton novels would remain sources of adaptations for years to come. Its screenplay was written by John Patrick Shanley, more recently known for writing and directing last year’s “Doubt”. “Congo” seems to know and cherish the conventions of “King Kong” and other man vs. unknown natural world films. It flaunts them pretty well, and on that level I enjoyed it.

Universally panned by critics and industry insiders before it was released, Dragonball Evolution is a movie that is a prime example of the bastardization of a beloved property.

Familiar with the original source material, the anime series Dragonball Z, nothing could get me excited for this live action feature with Goku played by Justin Chatwin. This is as atrocious as it gets like Speed Racer.

The paper-thin plot involves Goku (Chatwin) as a teenager being raised by his grandfather Gohan (Randall Duk Kim) to learn the ways of inner strength. On his birthday, Goku receives a gift. It is a magical orb called a dragonball, which holds mystical powers that combine together with six others can grant the person one wish.

Lord Piccolo (James Marsters) is an evil space alien that was sealed away in the bowels of the Earth for two thousand years breaks out, which was not explained. He seeks to gather all of the dragonballs to exact his revenge on the Earth.

Piccolo will go to any means necessary to get his hands on the dragonballs. He kills Goku’s grandfather in the process.

Goku teams up with Bulma (Emmy Rossum), a tough biker chick that looked like broken down harajuku girl, to recover a dragonball that was taken from her. Before his grandfather dies, he tells Goku to seek Master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat) to learn how to harness his power from the universe to defeat Piccolo.

This movie was laughably bad. Some sequences had me laughing aloud. The dialogue was awful. The side gags were painful to watch. The bad guy was barely in the movie for anybody to be in real peril.

It was a joke. After the movie bombed at the box office, the news came that a sequel in the works. Why?

Judgment: If you want to laugh your ass off with shitty dialogue, crappy characters and awful CG, by all means, check this movie out.

Rating: *1/2
