In addition to my growing collection of Alan Moore books, I have recently purchased a complete hardback compilation of Lost Girls. I was initially put off by Melinda Gebbie’s illustrations. Whimsical and fairytale-like in style, they are not at all reminiscent of Moore’s previous works. Once I started reading, though, I honestly couldn’t put the book back down. This is not so much due to its frequent and explicit erotic content, but because it has such a powerful and magnetic narrative quality that is comparable to Moore’s other more well-known pieces. The plot – a perversion of a variety of universally known and familiar fairytales – guides us through a revelation of human desires in its many forms. Although Lost Girls is probably more specifically targeted towards females, I have no qualms that male Moore fans will enjoy this series nevertheless. You may have noticed that we have been tweaking around with our blog today here is the list of changes:

• The first most important addition, which people have requested, is a new subscribe button. This will send you an email of new blog posts as it is via email make sure you sign up with a safe email account, such as a non work one. You can find it at the top of the first side bar on the right.
• Removed the erotic photography tab and replaced it by archiving the photos on our new tumblr.com erotic photography account. We will still post the photos as new blog posts but if you want to just see them all you can go there. We have also included a Tumblr button link to the page in the right hand side bar.
• We missed the music when we were visiting the blog so we have returned the player to automatically play when you visit, but the sound should be quieter just in case you do view at work.
• We have made the sight more pleasing on the eye too and got rid of some of the clutter.
• Finally people always ask us where the best place to get such and such from and we do have favourite places we like to shop at however we are concerned about junking our blog up with lots of adverts so we may add a tab with all the links we like to use for buying different things around the web.

John William Waterhouse’s paintings has been in people’s homes for the past 100 years, and now people are starting to order prints of his work as well. They make a great accompaniment to most lounge walls, and are often cheaper than a handmade oil painting. People prefer the easier ordering and more the fact that prints are also easier to look after and keep clean and tidy.

What an exciting month November is turning out to be!  Of course, this is National Novel Writing Month, but this month will see a ten year tradition branch out. The “Dirty Show” was created by Jerry Vile ten years ago and takes place in the Motor City every Valentine’s Day.  It is an “erotic art” exhibition that has drawn international attention.  This weekend, the “Dirty Show” is making its way to the City of Angels.

The Dirty Show is many things — but it is NOT, and NEVER has been, a pornographic hootenanny or a lame exercise in shock value. Its critics (and they are legion) forget that there is a legitimate difference between porn and the erotic. Porn, at best, is entertainment. Eroticism is enlightenment — an experience that not only reminds us that we are sentient beings, but also beings capable of seeing connections that go beyond mere carnality. So in this busy month, I am going to leave my desktop keyboard – pack my acer, camera, and a dirty little outfit – and head to Los Angeles – consider it research for my novel!

We’ll be back tomorrow to talk about Sunday night’s awesome Mad Men season finale (and hopefully August will be able to join me after he figures out some technical issues), but I can tell you right now that we loved it. It was a lovely episode, a gorgeous play on our expectations as only Mad Men can pull off and an episode in which, as I teased all my west coast friends who wouldn’t see the episode until two hours after me, “everyone gets exactly what they want.”

Thinking about certain elements of the ending got me thinking about this past season of the show in general, and in particular, the season premiere, “Out Of Town,” and the then latest acquisition to Bert Cooper’s eccentric collection of art: Hokusai Katsushika’s (best known for The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, see above) 1820 erotic painting, The Dream Of The Fisherman’s Wife, or also known as Diving Girl With Octopus. Well, actually that came up because I also noticed that the Picasso museum in Barcelona is doing a special exhibition “Secret Images” talking about some of Pablo’s favorite bits of erotic Japanese art. We’ll be back tomorrow, but that’s just something to think about for tonight to hold you over: Mad Men. Erotic Japanese art. Young women committing sex acts with creatures of the deep. And Pablo Picasso, who, of course, was never called an asshole…

On the one-year anniversary of Translinguistic Other, I unearthed several of the most popular search terms that bring unsuspecting viewers to stumble onto my blog, among them “Jesus,” “William Blake,” “dinosaurs,” “erotic art,” and “Bea Arthur.”  In order to keep giving you lovely folks what you apparently want, I’m going to be making gratuitous posts on these hot topics from time to time.  Today I will be killing two birds with one stone, tagging this one both “Bea Arthur” and “erotic art.”

In 2006, Karen Rosenberg asked the painter John Currin about his inspiration for his infamous portrait of Bea Arthur in an interview for New York Magazine:

[The] Bea Arthur painting is from Maude, which I used to watch as a kid. In the eighties, I didn’t have TV for, like, a whole decade. When I started watching again in the nineties, The Golden Girls was in syndication. When I had a loft with Sean and Kevin Landers, we’d always take a break in the afternoon and watch The Golden Girls. When I made the painting, I was living in Hoboken and still making abstract paintings, and I was very frustrated. I was walking back from the PATH train and this vision of Bea Arthur just came to me.

Whoa!  Looks like I get to tag this one “visionary art” as well!  You’re welcome.

I did this charcoal and pencil drawing awhile back and decided to post it here.  I didn’t have my digital camera around so I propped the pic up on a chair and snapped it with my cell phone camera.  Not too shabby for an impulsive snap of the lense.

So basically you owe me. But what else is new? I went to the library tonight to make some copies, decided to use the downstairs copier, much more secluded, down in the basement by the vertical files. No one else around, well, except for D (remember D – the very enthusiastic orientation leader?) I brought more pictures to copy from home, but the library closed early… There I was leafing through page after page of neked flesh, D rustling around in the background; I was beginning to realize than naked women look three to ten times more naked when viewed in the college library. I was just getting to Bettie Page when the librarian shut off the copy machine.

I hope you don’t find the Greek erotic art too graphic – I tried to find images of interaction – and didn’t send any of the phallus triumphant in its lonely bulging splendor… that is to say: little statues of giant penises. But just say the word, they too can be yours – only ten cents a copy.

All that erotica is either impossible to find or expensive as hell – bad erotica is easier to find – but basically you’re stuck with either: R rated movies or Glad-ta-meetcha beaver spreads. Either boring, mass-produced prefab microwaveable Hollywood smut or smut – plain dirty smut. However, rich , powerful businessmen will pay $1000.00 AN HOUR to be dressed in rubber, tied up, and tortured. So just move out here to the East Coast, get some eight inch leather, lace-up heels, a few corsets, and you’ve got it made. You’ll soon be able to afford all the smut you can handle.

Hang in there, try to get some sleep, for god’s sake, and don’t do anything I would do. Or, um, don’t do anything I want to do. No, wait, try ot do only what you should do, and spend the rest of the day hiding in your house. No, that’s no good… Well, after several tries I give up. I have no sensible advice to offer in this letter, mainly because I feel like I’m about to pass out. Too much salt or msg in the stir fry perhaps?

I’ll probably wait a few days at least before sending this most recent communication – wouldn’t want to cause an overdose. Yes, I must admit I do pack an almost hallucinatory mind altering wallop. Hang with me babe and I’ll rock your world… (yeah, whatever.)
