While I’ll be the first to step up and say my job is easy, it’s not without its problems

While I’ll be the first to step up and say my job is easy, it’s not without its problems. The only thing is that when things go wrong at this TV station, even a little problem has major fallout.

Take tonight, for example. My shift was from 2PM – 9PM. (If you’re unclear about what I do, I give an extensive break-down here.) While I was going through the log for my shift (mainly double-checking breaks and show times, always a good practice), I noticed that although I join our movie network at 9 (when the schedule says I’m supposed to be off, and when we go “unmanned”), there’s four breaks to run; two in the show at 9PM and two more at 10PM. There’s also the lottery that airs at 11PM and a show that’s supposed to be recorded at midnight.

If I’ve lost anyone here, please bear with me. Let me explain this again, perhaps a little more simply if you don’t understand TV speak. My schedule has me working 2PM – 9PM. At 9PM, we start running programming from a movie network. At 9PM and 10PM there’s two one-hour shows, each show has two local breaks (local breaks mean our station has to play commercials at these specific times). There’s also a lottery that airs at 11PM (we get the lottery from a satellite receiver), and a show that’s supposed to be recorded at midnight (this also comes from a satellite receiver). Each of these things require a person; a person to run the breaks, a person to set up the receiver to air the lottery, and a person to start recording the show.

All this being said, it should be clear there was a scheduling error, bad form on my boss’s part to be sure. I understand why he’d schedule me to get off earlier, because I have to commute an hour to Athens for the morning news (a live show). My coworker told me earlier that someone was supposed to come in and do all the other stuff when I was supposed to get off.

This hasn’t happened yet. I’m not entirely sure if I’ll be here until midnight (in which case I may as well sleep on the couch instead of driving home), or if this person is actually going to show up.

Like I said before, even little problems have huge fallout. When most everyone concerned with scheduling and whatnot is a short-sighted bunch, lots of things get over-looked. I’m now robbed of sleep because I am unable to leave until all duties have been completed.

Edit: I was able to leave, my coworker David came in at ten till 11 and relieved me. My boss called me after I had gotten home to tell me it was a logging error on behalf of the traffic department, to commend me on staying and making sure all breaks ran, and then gave me the day off tomorrow. Good things almost always come from these disasters.

My computer recently had the following error that popped up every time I turned on my computer:

My computer recently had the following error that popped up every time I turned on my computer:
‘C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe’
terminated unexpectedly with status code
-1073741482. The system will now shut
down and restart.
This started around 5 pm. Then I would have 60 seconds until it restarts. When I let it restart, it turned to a black screen and I would have to manually shut down my computer. I tried to go to safe mode and it still left a blank screen. Then I tried to log in and it would take a shitty long time but I got in ok. The shutdown didn’t even begin. The only problem was that there was only a background. Nothing else. So I decided to open the task manager. I clicked on File, and Run new task. Then I got on my internet browser and searched up this and that about services.exe errors. One website told me that I should use RegCure to find and fix errors. After I fully registered and scanned my computer, I found out there were 2713 problems found! RegCure fixed it in a few minutes. But my desktop still wasn’t up. I suspected explorer.exe wasn’t running so I checked that in the Processes tab of Task Manager. It wasn’t on there. I had to run a new task. ‘C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe’ or ‘C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe’ After it started running everything was back to normal. My desktop and taskbar popped back up and running. But then it failed and stopped loading. I then had to go to a different computer, copy ‘explorer.exe’ onto a USB Flash Drive and Run a new task. ‘flashdrive\explorer.exe’ Everything was back to normal. This ended at 3 a.m. But I’m still not finished. After I am done with my computer, I will have to restart it, go to safe mode, and load on the explorer.exe to my computer.
This was my shitty Saturday — How was yours?

If you’re a Goshdarn fanatic, or you just stalk me whilst I go about my daily business, then you will know that Sam of Goshdarn has a favourite colour that is green. That’s why the Gosh in Goshdarn is green, and also why his name comes first. My favourite colour, on the other hand is red, and explains why the Darn is red, and why I come second in the typical naming procedure.

However, everything may change as of now.

I woke up this morning, happy and content. My cousins were staying, and we had been playing a little Assassin’s Creed II – which is awesome, FYI – and after they had gone to bed, I had played some Left 4 Dead 2 – another fantastic game. Both of these beautiful games were being played on my equally beautiful XBOX 360, and had been recently purchased to add to the brilliance of the weekend to come.

However, when I went to turn on the XBOX this morning, I was horrified – I actually screamed – to see that the little light on the right hand bottom corner of the Ring of Light was flashing red. Never a good sign. To accompany that, the console was telling me I had an error E37, and should contact Microsoft. Tossers.

Turns out I have to send it off for repairs, which could cost me upwards of £60, because I’m not bloody insured.

I’m not best pleased. Seriously.

If the console isn’t returned in full working order by Christmas, then I’m going to crack some skulls. I’m still screaming to myself now. Maybe I should just buy a new one. I have to money, and it would make everything much quicker. Maybe an Elite, with 120GB hard drive.

What do you think?

At least this gives me a good incentive to finish NaNoWriMo with minimal distractions…

For several years, I’ve built a site with content from emails and online of interest to me and, obviously, others. Click the image to see the 92 posts I’ve saved there. Here, I will add other conversations.

WORDS.

What do they mean?

As a musician and wordist, I have the opportunity to communicate with lots of people worldwide about the challenges of artists in this present economy. Actually, very little has changed for most musicians. We “play” music, therefore the larger society doesn’t really take us serious. We’re expected to pay all of our bills, but we’re also asked to perform for FREE or next to FREE on more than one occasion. The account that follows speaks to this problem.

Heather,
I’m waving lots of flags. Here are some of them – www.floridajazznetwork.com
Here, the government is supposed to be “The People”. However, when parents allow the arts to be taken out of school and give their children drugs to subdue their creativity, we definitely have a problem. Obviously, it’s not just on this side of the planet. Your attestation confirms it’s a disease around the world.

Of course, Europeans appreciate the arts. Maybe we need to meet in Italy! Even there, they don’t have much money to pay anymore.

What to do? What to do?

Let’s keep talking and see if we can come up with a solution. We surely have a wide space in which to work. America ——— Australia.

Yes! There’s quite a number of us out there, so we’ll need to wave some pretty big signs…and ask for help from above!

Thank you for your email. It’s so weird to have this conversation with you, then have it in the park where I went for a picnic soon after!

Lobbying the government will be the hardest part – as usual.

On Oct 17, we had 100 people at our jazz series #1.
Tonight, at #2, we had about 50 people. Why? Everyone in Florida is at the Classics.

Now, you would think that means a Euro-Music concert.

Hahaha – what a response! How do I answer all that? Ah, see the responses in purple. Hope it makes sense. cheers, Heather

Heather,

This message is so full of FOOD FOR THOUGHT for www.musicwoman.ning.com

We need to break it down. From my point, here are some points to ponder:
I was so busy studying and stressed to the max with an ill man in my life! WHICH ARE YOU DOING NOW? Men tend to be a great obstruction to a woman’s musical career. Neither. Just finished study. Moved out in July, so the man is at arm’s length. In recuperation mode (for both of us) – altho’ he is still not at all well, and yes, I will look out for him but on my timetable. I’m now looking for permanent work, either in teaching or where I am in the Bureau of Statistics – Commonwealth job.

Dealing with one thing at a time and the job circuit and world is opening out. IS MUSIC YOUR CAREER? Please expand on “the is world opening out.” Kind of. To do music in this country, you need another job. For most, it’s instrumental teaching – or an office job. For me, doing classroom music teaching was to keep a foot in both camps. I put my teaching start date off until next year. At the moment, I’m working a bureacratic life in a government office but it keeps everything together while I get my creative feathers together again. (I stopped doing a lot of things musical for about 6 years.) So putting MY style of chart together has moved up the list, hindered a little by the fact that I used the piano as my tool, which was sold earlier this year. Right now, I’m in a home without a piano for the first time in my entire life. In a way, it’s OK ‘cos I have to clean up all the other mess in my life to make way, if you know what I mean. So it won’t be a distraction for a few months. Once I clear the hoardings away, there will be room for a piano in the basement. The man I ‘look after’ said I could have his lovely Ronisch. He nearly sold it. I begged him to keep it for me until I had room…and he did. He’s a good egg. His illness and side-affects filled my headspace with other angst that I truly didn’t need at the time. So now it’s up to me to get it all moving. It does depend a little on where the permanent work pops up! I’m breathing easy. For some reason, the universe has kept saying “sit tight”…so I’ll just do things bit by bit and do JUST that!

It makes sense but left my pal bitter about musicians and their carelessness. THIS IS THE BEAST WE ARE CONFRONTED WITH. How do we raise consciousness. I don’t know. The government heads and administrators talk but hardly put action or money where their mouth is…I’m kind of hoping that the medical science world is the way to get music back high on the agenda. You see, a lot of prominent people say ‘we all need music’, yet it isn’t reflected in attitudes among education or business people. The Arts is the first to suffer in the financial crisis, yet it is the substance that people need most at such a time. We don’t have philosophers like Aristotle around anymore, even Dewey, to raise the consciousness of the wellbeing of mankind – and music is a big contributor to the way our minds develop and process thought.

Local government laws which abandoned the licensing of live music venues. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Musicians are facing real challenges in society today. Our local government decided that if places were to put on live music, they needed to be licenced for such a purpose, as a POPE: Place of Public Entertainment. See: http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/live-music-gets-a-boost-in-nsw-20091023-hcgw.html

I’ve gotta choof off for some FREEEEEEEEE creativity. WHAT’S CHOOF? Run/go. I’ve gotta run, or I’ve gotta go. Taken, I think, from the sound of a choo-choo train moving out of the station. Gotta choof! (Aussie slang, from Queensland, I think…where I grew up.) I could be wrong but I haven’t heard of another explanation.
: ) Heather

Re: Music heals alllllllllllll!

Yes, Joan.

You are SO right.

It’s taken me 20 years to learn that lesson. Worse still, there have been open-minded (men) players around who said they are available for me! So I really need to get my shit together. I was so busy studying and stressed to the max with an ill man in my life! Dealing with one thing at a time and the job circuit and world is opening out.

I also need to learn how to have valuable time for me and my energy so there’s enough there for the creativity!

As said before, I’m co-writing with a VERY talented individual. I think he and I are coming from the same page. Unlike me, he didn’t stop doing music. However, he was burnt by a “starlet” – who rushed off to make $’000’s (supposedly) at the drop of a hat after his composition, energy and production time put her where she is today. THAT to me is poor taste – no matter how hard everyone is trying for a paid gig.

In a way, I guess it suits her – because she’s the crowd control performer…not really creative. So it makes sense but left my pal bitter about musicians and their, shall we say, carelessness.

Meanwhile, more Sydney venues have ‘closed out’ (as opposed to “shut down”)…despite a change in local government laws which abandoned the licensing of live music venues.

More later, I’ve gotta choof off for some FREEEEEEEEE creativity. : )

Heather,
First, let me say that your messages bring me such LIGHT! and I appreciate you even more than words can express.

Next, I sent you an invite to a private ning network, www.this-is-jazz.ning.com
Please join and CAREFULLY invite other jazzers in Australia to join IF YOU KNOW THEY UNDERSTAND WHERE REAL JAZZ CAME FROM.

Finally, I’ve passed up lots of opportunities to teach in the school system here for one reason – I refuse to subject myself to the narrow views of school officials and the outright disrespect of students. At 61 (62 on Dec 7), I’m not in the frame of mind to be insulted on a daily basis.

What I’m doing is promoting THE LAUDERHILL JAZZ SERIES and soliciting ads and sponsorship for this program so badly needed here since most of the jazz venues have become parking lots. I just put up new videos from our concert on Oct 17. See www.floridajazznetwork.com/fjnvideos.htm

About your band and music selections. The first group I worked with was Siembre, a latin jazz band of 8 men and me. I was with them for 1 year in Philadelphia. I loved being the center of attention, however, after one year of them doing conga solos on EVERY SONG I SANG, including ballads like My Funny Valentine and In A Sentimental Mood, I decided to leave the band and form my own jazz group – Take Five with piano, bass, drums, sax and me. I got to pick all the music we did and sang my original lyrics and songs.

This is what I’m teaching women to do – BE TRUE TO YOURSELF. If the musicians don’t want to do your material, get some more musicians.

Please let’s continue this conversation on the ning network. It’s very very important.
Love
Joan

November 18, 2009, 3:32 AM

Joan

Thank you, thank you so much!

I’m reading the book: The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidges.

It’s about neuroplasticity…and he is forever referring to cases about music and education.

For the same reason, I have every hope for the siamese twins that were just separated at the head. Now that the medical world and psychologists are recognising how we can shape our brains to shape ourselves and the information it absorbs, there are many ways to repair lost, damaged or traumatised cells.

Ah Joan,

I’m not sure why but I’m letting music teaching jobs slip by! I’ve passed with flying colours (100% for both assessments in my final semester). At this point, all I hear the univers saying is “sit tight”. I have no idea why yet. I sit quite content in a government bureaucratic job. Either way, there is room for developing my own music – so it’s like I would be juggling which path I travel down now.

Hmmm. What your book can’t address is when singers (namely me, on this occasion) have a dummy spit because the band boys are being too patronising, deceptive, controlling over the artistic output. Needless to say, the band I joined at the beginning of the year (with a view to Christmas functions work etc once we were out and about) is not on my agenda anymore.

So. I’m back to square one. Well, not quite. I’ve found another interesting avenue writing lyrics/melody with a great musician who’s put some soundtracks together. He and I have the same influences, so that’s really special. He’s got the best Blue Note collection I’ve seen in Australia. He totally loves Cuban to Brazilian music. And he’s quite eclectic as far as world music goes.

I know I’ve come full circle now and ready for the next phase because all the degrees of separation have kind of “imploded” down to ONE – no more than two, anyway!! I don’t know if that’s a good thing. We’ll see.

How are things for you?

Cheers, Heather

In Chapter 10 of my book, Euler’s Gem, I give Adrien-Marie Legendre’s beautiful proof of

In Chapter 10 of my book, Euler’s Gem, I give Adrien-Marie Legendre’s beautiful proof of Euler’s polyhedron formula: for any (convex) polyhedron with V vertices, E edges, and F faces, V-E+F=2. His use of spherical geometry to prove the theorem is extremely elegant.

On page 88 I include the portrait of Legendre shown at right. This is the same image of Legendre that can be found in many books on the history of mathematics. Here it is in the Smithsonian digital collection. Until recently it was believed that this was the only portrait of Legendre.

However, as Peter Duren writes in the article Changing Faces: The Mistaken Portrait of Legendre (pdf) in the December 2010 issue of the Notices of the AMS, this image is NOT Adrien-Marie Legendre at all! It is a politician named Luis Legendre.

It appears that the source of the confusion was a book published in the early 19th century that featured prominent figures of the day including the political revolutionary Luis Legendre. As we can see above, the caption accompanying the portrait lists only Legendre’s surname (although his full name was in the index). Also in this book were portraits of the mathematicians Lagrange, Monge, Carnot, and Condorcet. So the confusion begins.

According to the article, the first known use of Luis’ picture for Adrien-Marie was in 1900, 67 years after the mathematician’s death. By that time, there was no one living who remembered what he looked like.

The first mathematician to find out about this error appears to be Gérard Michon, who learned of it in 2007. He has a website with more details about the discovery.

Since then, a new, bizarre portrait of Adrien-Marie Legendre has surfaced. It is the 1820 caricature by Julien-Léopold Boilly shown at left.

In a fortuitous coincidence, my book is about to undergo a new printing and it looks like I will be able to replace the picture of Luis with the caricature of Adrien-Marie. It will be nice to set the record straight.

So close but so far. Republic of Ireland finished empty handed an autumn of so much hope and promise

So close but so far. Republic of Ireland finished empty handed an autumn of so much hope and promise, during which time displayed spirited performances against both the current world champion and world cup finalist France. But for all Ireland’s highs in the games facing the Italians and Domenech’s side, the sense of failure is even more acute and frustrating for Trapattoni’s men. In football and in life there is a very fine line between succeeding and not. And the devil is in the detail.

[ It happened in just 12 seconds, on the 17th of November '93... It was 1-1 in Paris, in the last minute of the qualifiers for US World Cup, with France needing just that draw. But from Ginola's boot to Kostadinov's shot the history was rewriten: 2-1 for Bulgaria, who ended up playing a World Cup semifinal against Italy in United States. Please notice that the visitors wore white shirts and green shorts, as was Ireland's choice on wednesday. So what stopped than Ireland from making it 2-1 even in the 120th minute? ]

Against Italy, on Croke Park, Ireland was so close to a famous victory yet Gilardino cancelled in the dying moments Sean St. Ledger’s 87th minute strike. The sense of a lost opportunity beamed in the otherwise smiling Irish eyes. A few days later, in what Ireland imagined to be a final push for the first place and automatic qualification if that St. Ledger goal would have been the last in the top of the table game in Dublin, Montenegro frustrated the Croke Park faithful even further: 0-0. It was Ireland’s third consecutive home draw in World Cup qualifiers and another build up to that sense of near miss. In other words, even if Italy would have failed to beat Cyprus in the peninsula, Ireland wouldn’t have made it to South Africa due to its draw against the ex-Yugoslav minnows…

What not many envisaged at the start of the campaign, was though achieved. Ireland was still in it, with a chance to make it to the FIFA 2010 World Cup. A performance in itself, judging by the poor results in the previous qualifiers, miserably wasted on the desired way to Austria and Switzerland.

Between Ireland and a winter trip to Africa came across the hand of destiny. France, 1998 Coupe du Monde winner and 2006 World Cup finalist, was drawn in the play-offs as a seeded team versus the Irish. And Croke Park was once again the venue of a spirited but once again short changed Irish display. St. Ledger’s body and the post have deflected Anelka’s shot into Given’s net: 0-1.

The Saturday first leg was another Irish missed opportunity to impose its authority, to take a shaky Goliath of the game by the scruff of the neck. The frustration spilled over in the media, about alleged loose words sneaked by Lassana Diarra towards Keith Andrews at the final whistle. The game was over, the talk was done in the grass with a 1-0 for the favourites and the scrumage at the end of 90 minutes just poised the return leg even further.

In Paris, it was captain’s Robbie Keane honour to put the record straight: the French were superior in Dublin but the tie wasn’t over yet… 1-1 on aggregate. Without Abidal and Escude, his substitute who was unfortunately injured by fellow defender Evra in the opening minutes, the World Cup finalist was more vulnerable by the minute.

Yet Ireland didn’t capitalize on this advantage. Ireland didn’t sent the tie to sleep with a second goal and it’s an unwritten football law that missed chances are coming back to haunt you. O’Shea, Duff and Keane, who have passed even the brave goalkeeper Lloris but apparently wanted to majestically enter with the ball in the net, couldn’t find the target after nicely crafted attacks and the boumerang mercilessly stroke in extra-time.

It was all about an offside. As it happened many times in football, in more or less poised encounters, with a lot or less at stake, the offside rule and its interpretation complicated the affair and sparked controversy. It’s what happened on wednesday evening in Paris, after 11 o’clock. Two French players were offside in a deadball situation but the Swedish assistant referee failed to signal the irregularity and the rest became big time history.

It’s the assistant linesman and his glued flag that failed the Swedish referee in charge of the affairs. Once the offside promptly signaled, the following motion would have became irrelevant. In this light has to be perceived the human error that let Henry’s handballs and Gallas equalizer stand. Without this goal, France and Ireland would have probably gone neck in neck to the purgatory of penalty shoot outs, having to eradicate their demons and worst nightmares.

The French have lost a World Cup final on penalty shootouts, in Berlin, in 2006, while the Irish came off the stage at their last World Cup presence by being beaten from the spot by Spain, in Asia, in 2002. Who would have won? Guess what… There is a 50% chance for France to have won it from the penalty spot.

Fact of the matter is that with or without assistant referee’s error to fail to spot the offside that lead to Henry’s infamous two handball and the undeserved French equaliser, Ireland was always only one goal away from qualifying to South Africa. Let’s remember that a 1-0 for Ireland just cancelled the fine French win in Dublin and only a second goal would have insured the islanders’ passage.

And from Robbie Keane’s leisurely miss in an one on one with the goalkeeper stems all the real frustration of the night that should have been but never unfolded. Created opportunities are to be converted. Narrow misses end in bitter failure. A 2-0 for Ireland in the 76th minute would have been fully deserved for the visitors and appropriate to the balance of forces in Paris yet the captain delayed the outcome and let the qualification at the hand of destiny.

It was one Swedish’s inert hand and one Frenchman’s cheeky opportunism which decided it. The Irish were too dejected to react with a second goal which was earlier in many’s boots. But from one of many unspotted offsides which altered results to a character assasination of a well passed captain and a public outcry on the supposed injustice of the game, there’s a long way. Life is unfair and football remains just a game, at times cruel in the extreme but predicating the very essence of human imperfection.

Do we really want video evidence? Can’t we wait for the pilot scheme tested in UEFA Europa League involving penalty area assistant referees, the brain child of a… Frenchman, to see its worth, benefits and real merits? The push for some rule changes seems near yet until then there are times when graciously and dignifyingly accepting any kind of defeat will draw more plaudits than any seemingly righteous but frustrated outcry. The goal that should have not stand was for all to see and the very implacability of referee’s refusal to ask his assistant was more than enough evidence.

There’s always another morning… France was announced today as top seed for UEFA 2012 European Championship qualifiers, while Ireland is in the third tier of nine nations, with the draw to be made on the 7th of February 2010 in Warsaw. With a bit of change of fortune, the Irish luck might send back Trapattoni to Paris and the French to Lansdowne Road. That wished replay can wait for a potential proper plotted revenge…
