e.s.t.: Retrospective: The Very Best Of e.s.t. (ACT 9012-2)
It was a death that shocked us all because it was so unexpected, and came at a time when his already impressive trajectory looked set to soar even further. Esbjorn Svensson had been a hugely talented and charismatic jazz pianist from the start, and the unstinting work ethic and tight group spirit of his trio had brought the band a loyal and large following (possibly the largest in post-1990 jazz).

This 13-track best-of traces the band from 1998’s From Gagarin’s Point of View through to the posthumous release, Leucocyte, just two and a half months after  Svensson’s death in a diving accident on 14 June 2008.

All the big ones are here: From Gargarin’s Point Of View, Dodge the Dodo, Good Morning Susie Soho, Behind the Yashmak, Strange Place for Snow, Seven Days of Falling, Believe, Beleft, Below, Viaticum, Dolores In A Shoestand, and they all sound just glorious. But it must have been hard choosing them from such a consistent and rich canon – for instance here is a classic not included:

Like so many ground-breakers, it’s easy to overlook the originality of the man because his ideas have been taken up by so many others. Not that they have meant to imitate, they have just, quite rightly, been inspired by a band that took the old-fashioned acoustic piano, bass and drums format, and, by having Svensson’s gorgeous, pop-catchy tunes, plus an inventive way of playing them, complete with just the right technical wizardry, made it brand new.

This collection is a perfect introduction for those less familiar with e.s.t.’s output, but completists might want it to because it might not have any unreleased tracks but it does have comprehensive track notes from the two men who feel his loss more than any others: double bassist Dan Berglund and drummer Magnus Öström.

Following the very sad death of Swedish pianist Esbjorn Svensson in a diving accident nearly a year ago, his partners, bassist Dan Berglund and drummer Magnus Ostrom, decided that the one thing they couldn’t do was form another trio with a new pianist.

That meant going different ways, and now we hear Berglund has a new band, an album on the way and a worldwide tour to follow.

The band will be a quartet with Johan Lindstroem on guitar, Martin Heteros on piano and Magnus Persson on drums. They are all old friends from the pre-E.S.T. days and have pop experience as well as jazz leanings.

They are in the studio at the moment recording their own compositions for an album on the German ACT label, the same one E.S.T. stuck with throughout their career, and it is due for release in January 2010.

The Dan Berglund band will then go on tour around the world, the UK leg of which is likely to be between 12 and 31 March 2010.

Vai como despedida carnavalesca, porque logo mais inicio um recesso e só volto a postar na próxima semana. Amanhã pego a estrada e subo a serra até Guaramiranga-CE, para o Festival Jazz & Blues, realização vitoriosa de Maria Amélia Mamede e Rachel Gadelha. Esse ano tem Cesar Camargo Mariano, Ná Ozetti, Toots Thielemans, Benjamin Taubkim, Zeca Assumpção, Sérgio Reze, Pablo Fagundes, Lany Gordin, entre outros. E tem Idilva Germano, cantando domingo e segunda-feira, para poucos privilegiados, na pousada Le Rêve, em Mulungu.

Voltando ao Esbjörn Svensson Trio (nunca mais!), a peça assinada por Monk está no CD ‘EST Plays Monk’, produzido em 1996. É provavelmente o melhor disco desse grupo que virou mito na história do jazz contemporâneo: Esbjörn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (contrabaixo) e Magnus Öström (bateria).

Teo Macero, 82 lata, zmarł 19 lutego. Saksofonista, kompozytor, ale przede wszystkim producent jazzowy. Zrewolucjonizował spojrzenie na pracę studyjną jeszcze przed Lee Perrym i Brianem Eno, pracując jako “reżyser” albumów Milesa Davisa, szczególnie tych z przełomu lat 60. i 70., czyli edytując, tnąc i sklejając fragmenty długich sesji nagraniowych na prośbę mającego doń pełne zaufanie Davisa. Oprócz biografii (które nietrudno będzie znaleźć) polecam długi wywiad z Macero, który znajdziecie tutaj. Po resztę wystarczy sięgnąć do którejkolwiek biografii Davisa. Ten człowiek produkował mu płyty przez ponad 30 lat trzy kolejne dekady – od “Kind Of Blue” po “Tribute To Jack Johnson”! A to tylko jeden ze śmietanki jazzmanów, dla których pracował Macero.

Buddy Miles, 60 lat, zmarł 26 lutego. Perkusista znany przede wszystkim z grupy Band Of Gipsies Jimiego Hendrixa. Więcej tutaj.

Klaus Dinger, 61 lat, zmarł 21 marca. Znany z Kraftwerk i Neu! perkusista-minimalista, jeden z tych, którzy stworzyli brzmienie kraut rocka. Pomyślcie o TYM brzmieniu, które potem zaowocowało powstaniem całej sceny postrockowej. Więcej tu.

Albert Hofmann, 102 lata, zmarł 29 kwietnia. Szwajcarski chemik, który zsyntetyzował LSD w roku 1938, a potem robił doświadczenia z substancją (na sobie), pozostając rzecznikiem psychodelicznego undergroundu aż do śmierci. Skojarzcie z “Próbą kwasu w elektrycznej oranżadzie”, okładkami ery Day-Glo i rockiem psychodelicznym – od lat 60. po dziś – jeśli komuś brakuje podbudowy muzycznej. Jeśli komuś przeszkadza to, że narkotyki niszczą organizm, niech skojarzy z tą informacją wiek zmarłego chemika albo niech po prostu poczyta więcej tutaj.

Bo Diddley, 79 lat, zmarł 2 czerwca. Posiadacz najbardziej charakterystycznej gitary na świecie i równie charakterystycznego brzmienia. Jeden z ojców rock’n'rolla w latach 50.  A co było potem, znajdźcie sobie tu.

Esbjörn Svensson, 44 lata, zmarł 14 czerwca. Pianista i kompozytor, lider E.S.T., czołowa postać jazzu szwedzkiego, europejskiego, a wreszcie światowego, choć tym ostatnim faktem nie zdążył się nacieszyć, bo kariera E.S.T. w Ameryce dopiero się rozkręcała, gdy zginął w wypadku, nurkując przy jednej z wysp nieopodal Sztokholmu. Jeśli nawet nie zmienił oblicza jazzu, to na pewno zmienił odbiór jazzu, trafiając z nim do rockowej publiczności, o czym przekonać się można, przy okazji zdobywania wielu innych informacji, tutaj.

Isaac Hayes, 65 lat, zmarł 10 sierpnia. Król R&B, funku, soulu, wokalista i multiinstrumentalista, kucharz z “South Parku” i legenda wytwórni Stax. To nazwisko może rzadko gości na blogach poświęconych alternatywie rockowej i awangardzie, ale podejrzewam (a w paru wypadkach nawet wiem), że płyty Hayesa często goszczą za to w odtwarzaczach ludzi z tym kręgiem związanych. Poza tym sporo w jego dawnej muzyce odniesień do psychodelii. Ścieżkę dźwiękową do “Shafta” zna każdy – nawet jeśli nie zna Hayesa – ale warto też posłuchać na przykład “Hot Buttered Soul”. Hector Zazou, 60 lat, zmarł 8 września. Francuz algierskiego pochodzenia. Producent i kompozytor działający na wielu polach muzyki alternatywnej i awangardowej, szczególnie dobrze łączący ich nurty z wpływami muzyki świata. Chorował długo, zdążył jeszcze nagrać przed śmiercią album “In The House Of Mirrors” – znakomitą pożegnalną płytę. Szukajcie informacji na stronach jego macierzystej wytwórni Crammed Discs, pod hasłem “Hector Zazou R.I.P.”.

Jimmy Carl Black, 70 lat, zmarł 1 listopada. Perkusista i wokalista grupy The Mothers Of Invention, czyli formacji Franka Zappy, od jej sławnych początków. Indianin z pochodzenia, freak z wyboru, można przypuszczać, że Zappa zawdzięcza mu wiele w dziedzinie poczucia humoru. Trzeba go posłuchać na “Freak Out!” i “We’re Only In It For The Money”, jeśli ktoś nie jest zaznajomiony z dyskografią Zappy – znajdzie tam Blacka i bębniącego, i gadającego. Więcej informacji we wspomnieniu w “New York Timesie”. Swoją drogą, co za paskudny rok dla perkusistów.

Freddie Hubbard, 70 lat, zmarł wczoraj, czyli 29 grudnia. Grał z Johnem Coltranem i Theloniousem Monkiem, na bardzo wielu płytach wytwórni Blue Note. Jeszcze jeden trębacz lepszy od Chrisa Bottiego na tym świecie, przynajmniej do wczoraj. Poważnie – bez porównania lepszy. Więcej tu.

Swoją drogą na pewno o kimś zapomniałem. Dopiszcie więc, kogo tu brakuje, żeby na początek podsumowań roku mieć za sobą to najsmutniejsze.

Um momento especial para lembrar um dos mais criativos pianistas da história do jazz, falecido tragicamente aos 44 anos, durante mergulho no arquipélago próximo a Estocolmo, em 14 de junho de 2008.

Poucos grupos demonstraram tão bem que o jazz não é mais uma forma de arte exclusivamente norte-americana quanto o trio liderado pelo pianista sueco Esbjörn Svensson. Mesclando brilhantes interpretações  de jazz standards de compositores como Thelonious Monk, com material inteiramente original, o EST (como o trio era mais conhecido) dissolveu as fronteiras entre o jazz e o rock e a música clássica.

No he llegado a tiempo.  El caprichoso destino ha decidido que jamás podré ver en directo al gran pianista Esbjörn Svensson. Este músico con un nombre impracticable para mi pobre fonética sueca y que rompió mi letargo el día que le escuché.  El mismo que abrió una puerta indescriptible en mi planteamiento musical, junto al resto de su banda: Magnus Öström y Dan Berglund.

Han conseguido transportar el panorama del jazz a los umbrales del pop y del rock. Con una personalidad propia y llena de misterios.

La primera vez que les oí descubrí un sonido nuevo.  Otra manera de sacarle partido a instrumentos tan comunes (bajo, piano y contrabajo).  Hasta el punto que la deformación del sonido me hacía sospechar si no habían usado algún tipo de triquiñuela en el estudio.  Definitivamente: no.  Palabra de Esbjörn.

Trío con 13 discos en el mercado reflejo de una personalidad: la de tres hombres unidos bajo la batuta de las composiciones de Esbjörn. En boca de su representante Burkhard Hopper, Svensson era musicalmente “la luz que iluminaba al mundo porque lo que hizo fue romper barreras”.”Decía que se guiaba por la música que salía de su interior”.

15 de junio del 2008.  Un accidente de buceo se lleva la vida de Svensson.

No puedo más que ver sus fotos en directo y resignarme a imaginarme ese torrente de energía del que hablan los críticos, del juego de sus dedos y sus riffs imposibles. De su sonido único.

L’ho saputo solo oggi mentre mi accingevo ad acquistare i biglietti. Nel programma cartaceo di un festival jazz di Fano (www.fanojazz.org), sabato 26 luglio era previsto il concerto degli Esbjörn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.), uno straordinario trio capitanato dal pianista svedese Esbjörn Svensson, capace di dare vita a una sapiente miscela di jazz, Drum&Bass, musica elettronica, funk, rock e pop. Incredibilmente, Svensson è annegato lo scorso 14 giugno all’età di 44 anni (gli stessi che visse Billie Holiday) durante un’immersione nell’arcipelago di Stoccolma, in quella stessa acqua che ondeggia sulla copertina di Tuesday Wonderland (2006), il loro ultimo capolavoro in studio. Questo è un piccolo omaggio a un grande musicista. È il brano eponimo – davvero capace di schiudere all’ascoltatore un “paese delle meraviglie” – che dà il titolo a quel cd. Buon ascolto.

Esbjörn Svensson, einer der einfühlsamsten und besten Interpreten der europäischen Jazzszene, ist am 14. dieses Monats bei einem Tauchunfall ums Leben gekommen.

Ein herber Verlust, der mir näher geht, als man es von jemanden erwarten sollte, der mir weder nahe stand, noch persönlich bekannt war.
Doch seine Musik hat mich berührt und verzaubert an diesem kalten Wintertag vor 2 Jahren, als e.s.t im Porgy & Bess den European Jazz Prize 2004 entgegennahm. Ein Magier am Piano hat sein Lebenswerk mit seinem 12. und letztem Album “Leucocyte”, das erst kürzlich fertiggestellt wurde, beendet – viel zu früh, viel zu abrupt!

There are rare times when the obituary pages stop you dead, as it were. So it was this week with the news of the death of the Swedish jazz pianist Esbjorn Svensson in a diving accident at the age of 44. A few days on, I feel as if there ought to be more of a fuss, that the gap his death will leave in European jazz (and jazz generally) ought to be more commented upon. (There are good articles at All About Jazz and by Sam Christie on the Guardian music blog). As the British poet Adrian Mitchell said of a different early death, “And God killed little Lenny Bruce/ And let Bob Hope survive”.

I first heard EST, as the trio became known, about a decade ago, at the time of what I think was their fourth record, From Gagarin’s Point of View (they always had great titles). It included the mesmerising Dodge the Dodo, a mix of driving ostinato, wailing bass improvisation in a long middle break, and a catchy melody, an urgent sound which suddenly gives way to something slower, reflective, almost religious. I’m listening to a live version as I write this. It was clear that this was jazz – but played by people who were as interested in the music of Hendrix and the Velvets and other experimentalists. (When I went to see them in London a few years ago, a friend who plays piano quite well explained that the chromatic scales Svensson was using gave him a sound which was strikingly different from the blues-based sound of conventional jazz, although I’m not technically knowledgeable enough to be sure that I have this completely right).

I used to be something of a musical completist with groups that I liked, but as I’ve got older I’ve not felt the need. With EST I made an exception, because I knew each new record would be interesting enough, and different enough, from the last one to be worthwhile.

If you stumble on this, and want to start somewhere, try Seven Days of Falling (2004), the sound of a group which has been together long enough, and has become technically expert enough, to be confident in pushing at the edges: as David Mamet said of film directing, “The purpose of technique is to free the unconscious.”
