Nintendo Direct Also Announces Wii U Games Shown at E3 2013 to be Playable at Select Best Buy Stores

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The next title in SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will be exclusive to Nintendo’s Wii U home console and Nintendo 3DSportable system. Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata announced the details of a new partnership with SEGA during a new Nintendo Direct video announcement today. Sonic Lost World is a new action platforming game, and more information about it will be announced before the E3 2013 video game trade show begins on June 11.

The Nintendo Direct also announced Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games for Wii U, and revealed that additional SEGA Game Gear games would be coming to the Virtual Console service for Nintendo 3DS. Outside of SEGA news, Nintendo announced that select Wii U games featured at E3 2013 will soon be playable at participating Best Buy stores, the launch date for New Super Luigi U, new Pikmin 3 game details and additional information about a variety of previously announced Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games.

“The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “These announcements in conjunction with SEGA demonstrate the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform, and set the stage for our upcoming announcements at E3.”

Wii U News

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games: The game includes a variety of events from the Winter Games, including curling, skiing, figure skating pairs and snowboard slopestyle – which will make its Olympic debut in Sochi, Russia. Different events might use the Wii Remote Plus controller, Wii U GamePad controller or both. In addition to realistic events, the game also includes those set in the worlds of Sonic and Mario that let players perform moves not possible in real life. Launch details and timing will be announced at a later date.

Experience Games from Nintendo’s E3 Booth at Best Buy: Exclusively at participating Best Buy locations in the United States and Canada, consumers will be able to play some of the unreleased Wii U games featured at E3 while the event is occurring in Los Angeles. Details about locations and which games will be featured will be revealed in the coming weeks.

New Super Luigi U: The Year of Luigi-themed downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U offers players 82 updated courses. But it also includes a new playable character in multiplayer mode: Nabbit, who steals items from Toad Houses. Nabbit can’t power up, but also won’t take damage when he touches enemies. New Super Luigi U will be released as downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U in the Nintendo eShop on June 20 for $19.99. But in honor of the Year of Luigi, Nintendo is also offering a standalone packaged version of New Super Luigi U that doesn’t require New Super Mario Bros. U on Aug. 25 at a suggested retail price of $29.99.

The Wonderful 101: The mass-action adventure from Platinum Games launches Sept. 15. Additional details will be announced after E3.

Pikmin 3: New playable characters Alph, Brittany and Charlie recruit the Pikmin creatures to help them gather fruit so that they can return with the seeds to save their home, Planet Koppai. Players can divide activities among the different characters, and explore separate areas in the same map with different groups of Pikmin. Using the GamePad (known as the KopPad in the game), players can view the overall map and grasp what each character and Pikmin are up to. Players also can choose their preferred control option: GamePad in conjunction with the TV, Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk combo or GamePad only in off-TV mode. Players can also use the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk with the GamePad as a second-screen monitor. Pikmin 3 launches Aug. 4.

GAME & WARIO: The game launches in stores and in the Nintendo eShop June 23 at a suggested retail price of $39.99, and includes a number of games from WarioWare, Inc., that use the GamePad in different ways. Newly revealed games include: Island, which lets two to five people launch little creatures called Fronks onto islands in the sea to score points; Patchwork, a puzzle game that tests players’ pattern-recognition skills; and Kung-Fu, which challenges players to help Young Cricket navigate a course safely using the forward-looking view on the TV and the top-down view on the GamePad. A new Iwata Asks feature offers more details about the game at http://iwataasks.nintendo.com.

Resident Evil Revelations: Capcom’s horror-survival game is launching in stores and in the Nintendo eShop on May 21. The game originally released for Nintendo 3DS, and the Wii U version offers players updated HD graphics, GamePad controls and new game content. Players can use the GamePad to view the map and change items using the touch screen without pausing their progress. Or they can play the full game on the GamePad in off-TV mode, or play with the Wii U Pro Controller. The game is Miiverse-compatible, and a demo version is currently available in the Nintendo eShop.

Columns

Crystal Warriors

Defenders of Oasis

Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

G-LOC: Air Battles

Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya

Inside the Treehouse with Animal Crossing: New Leaf: Because of the vast amount of content in the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Leaf game, Nintendo’s Treehouse localization team is hosting an ongoing video series to talk about the franchise and many of the fun features of the new game. The videos will be available on Nintendo’s YouTube channel and in the Nintendo eShop on a regular basis leading up to the game’s June 9 launch. Additionally, a newAnimal Crossing panel for Puzzle Swap is now available for StreetPass Mii Plaza, and fans also might find a special Animal Crossing-themed message on Swapnote.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D: This game launches in stores and in the Nintendo eShop on May 24 and includes all the fun of the original Wii game, now optimized for portable play. It also includes eight new unlockable levels that are each based on one of the eight worlds from the original game. These levels will challenge players with new elements like platforms that force them to move at a faster pace, large drops of tar falling from the ceiling and giant rotating stone gears that can alter the level itself.

A Legendary Sale: The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons arrive on the Virtual Console service for Nintendo 3DS on May 30. Because playing the games together unlocks so much additional content, Nintendo is offering them for just $4.99 each for the first three weeks after launch. After this promotion expires, the games will be available for $5.99 each.

Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move: The game, which launched May 9 exclusively in the Nintendo eShop, challenges players to place tiles on the bottom screen to guide the Minis to their goal on the top screen. The game includes more than 180 stages, but also dramatically extends the fun of the game by letting players create their own stages and share them with others. Players can opt to try a random user-created level or one created by their friends. They can also select from the most popular levels overall or search the top levels of the week.

Another Nintendo Direct focused on future Wii U content will air around the time of E3 2013.

Coffee Beans
Super Metroid originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994. The game was re-released for the Wii’s Virtual Console service on August 20, 2007, and is available to download for 800 Wii Points, which is $8.

Nintendo just released Super Metroid for the Wii U’s Virtual Console service, and you can currently purchase the Wii U version for only 30 cents until June 13th, and then the game should be available for $7.99. Both the Wii and Wii U versions received an ESRB rating of “EVERYONE” with “Mild Violence” listed as content for parents and gamers to be aware of.

The software description for the game on the Wii U eShop says, “The Space Pirates, merciless agents of the evil Mother Brain, have stolen the last Metroid from a research station, and once again Mother Brain threatens the safety of the galaxy! Samus Aran must don her awesome array of high-tech weaponry to retrieve the deadly Metroid hidden deep within the cave-riddled planet Zebes. Super Metroid features excellent graphics, with a huge variety of enemies and worlds to explore. The side-view action will be familiar to many players, only now there are new weapons and items, including the Grappling Beam, which allows Samus to swing across large chasms, and the X-Ray Scope, which reveals secret passages.”

If you own a Wii or Wii U, how many hours can you expect from Super Metroid? Also, how many U.S. Wii owners have game-play data reported for the game through the Nintendo Channel, since it released in 2007? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look at the official U.S. Nintendo Channel data for Super Metroid!

The Brew
Super Metroid now has approximately 125,793 U.S. Wii owners with game-play data reported, with about 2,093 days possibly reported. This is an increase of about 23,000 more players with game-play data reported, than when we first looked at the game a few years back.

The game now has 1,329,906 Total Hours of game-play reported, an increase of 381,538 Total Hours since its August 2010 data report. Its average reported now of 10 Hours 34 Minutes “Per person”, seen in the image above, is a 1 Hour 20 Minutes increase from its August 2010 average. Wii owners are spending a little over an hour each time they play the game, according to this reported data.

For some comparison to other Wii Metroid games, Super Metroid’s reported average “Per person” is about 6 hours lower than Metroid: Other M’s and almost 12 hours lower than the reported average for Metroid Prime 3.

Super Metroid has a “professional” critic review score average of 95.50%, based on 11 reviews on GameRankings.com. Its Amazon.com customer review score average is a 90.00%, based on just 6 reviews of the Virtual Console version. BUT, the reviews average for the Super Metroid SNES cartridge Amazon page is at a 97.05%, based on 95 customer reviews.

How much has Super Metroid’s Wii Virtual Console release in the United States made for Nintendo? The game has made Nintendo just over $1,000,000, at least according to the approximate number of players with data reported and the game’s $8 price point.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I played the SNES version many years ago, but I never purchased it on the Wii’s Virtual Console service. I have already purchased Super Metroid from the Wii U’s eShop though, for the awesome price of only 30 cents. If you own a Wii U or a Wii and haven’t seen anything on the game, here’s a trailer for the Wii U version:

It’s probably been 15+ years since I last played Super Metroid, and while I haven’t given the Wii U version a try just yet, I am looking forward at seeing how it has held up over the years. I know in the last Super Metroid post, there was one person that thought the Wii Virtual Console version was not very good at all, but they had never played it on the SNES. While I think I remember watching my brother play the last boss battle multiple times in the game, I’m not sure if I ever played through and beat the game completely by myself. I hope the game lives up to what I remember about it, at the very least.

While I mentioned in “The Brew” section that Super Metroid’s reported average “Per person” is lower than Metroid: Other M’s and Metroid Prime 3′s, I think it should be noted that those two games were full retail releases, not available through (just) the Wii’s Shop Channel. But, I think it shows how lower priced digital titles, even if older in this case, can really be a great value.

<strike>Now, you may be wondering how can you enter to win the games mentioned in the data image above, right? If you want to be entered in a drawing for those games make sure you’re following me on Twitter, HERE; and make sure to tweet this post out using the Twitter button below (pointed out in the image below if you’re unsure) AND include the hashtags #SuperMetroidCoffee and #WiiU and also @coffeewithgames in it (should be enough room for all!). This will run for a few weeks, so there should be multiple opportunities to get entered in the giveaway.</strike> The winner has been announced, HERE.

Questions
Have any of you already downloaded and played the Wii U version? If so, what do you think about it if you had never played it before?

If you played and beat the Wii Virtual Console version of Super Metroid, do you know how many hours you have played the game? Also, if you were a fan of the game back on the SNES, do you think it has held up well over the years?

London, UK. — May 13, 2013 — Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, tod

London, UK. — May 13, 2013 — Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today confirmed that Phoenix Wright™: Ace Attorney™ – Dual Destinies will be available to purchase digitally on Nintendo 3DS™ across Europe and North America in Autumn 2013.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, previously announced for the West as Ace Attorney™ 5, sees the return of courtroom hero Phoenix Wright. Set eight years since his last appearance in the courts, the first case in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies sees the action start in a destroyed court room. It’s down to Phoenix Wright and his team at the Wright Anything Agency to discover the cause of the destruction. Players will have to battle it out in court against Gaspen Payne, the younger brother of Winston Payne from previous Ace Attorney titles, as they defend the accused.

The much loved gameplay and features from previous titles in the Ace Attorney™ series return but for the first time in stunning 3D graphics, bringing the courtroom and characters to life and putting players directly in the heart of the action. Players will need to investigate each crime scene with the dynamic 3D visuals now making it possible to change views and zoom in on areas to uncover any hidden evidence or clues. In the court room the drama continues as players present their evidence, challenge witnesses and begin to unravel the truth behind each of the cases in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney -Dual Destinies.

Joining Phoenix is the young Attorney Apollo Justice and new Associate Attorney Athena Cykes. Athena’s unique ability to psychoanalyse witnesses introduces a brand new element to proceedings. Using Athena’s ‘Mood Matrix’ players can detect the emotional state of a witness and tell whether they’re surprised, angry, happy or sad. Players can compare these feelings with the statement given by the witness, point out any contradictions between the two and challenge the witness testimony.

For the latest trailer, screenshots and artwork for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies visit the Capcom Europe Press Site www.capcomeuro-press.com

I am a bit saddened that the game will not be receiving a physical release, but the previous Ace Attorney game Ace Attorney Investigations sold so poorly, that Capcom did not bother releasing the sequel in North America. Capcom’s explanation for releasing the game on the Nintendo eShop only is because of lack of retailer interest.

I really wish Capcom would do a limited printing of the game via a Limited Edition box that includes the Phoenix Wright figure and a music CD, I would definitely pay up front for that like I did for the special edition of Ni No Kuni last June.

But thank you Capcom for giving Ace Attorney another chance in the west, I’ll be sure to spread the word because I absolutely love this series. Now can y’all bug Level 5 about the release of Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney, please?

It looks like fans of Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! will be getting another mathematical dose in the series this fall. The new game will be titled Adventure Time: Explore The Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW! which continues to follow the obscure but awesome long title trend the series seems to be going with. Once again trusted developers WayForward are back developing the game which will be releasing on Wii U and 3DS along with Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Here’s what D3Publisher and Cartoon Network had to say via a press release;

In a completely new storyline and adventure and featuring the voices of the show’s most popular characters, fans will have to save the Candy Kingdom by exploring the mysteries surrounding a massive Secret Royal Dungeon deep below the Land of Ooo. Select from an assortment of fan-favorite characters from the show, including Finn, Jake, Marceline, Cinnamon Bun, and more, and team up with your friends in four-player co-operative multiplayer as theAdventure Time world comes to life.

Here’s what Capcom’s USA Senior Vice-President Christian Svensson had to say.
“A physical release is not in the cards, historically it’s been tough to attract long term retail support for Ace Attorney titles. With the release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Dual Destinies we wanted as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the game for as long as possible. With that in mind we have opted for a digital only release via the Nintendo 3DS eShop.”
So there it is, Capcom believe by limiting a game to digital distribution only “as many people as possible” will get to play it, that’s were all the other games companies who do both have been going wrong.

Capcom just released a demo of Resident Evil Revelations on Wii U (roughly 600mb) and I jumped on it

Capcom just released a demo of Resident Evil Revelations on Wii U (roughly 600mb) and I jumped on it. I’m a huge fan of the 3DS game, it was so good I think it should have been called Resident Evil 6. The thought of a more polished version of the game with Wii U features is a very juicy one indeed, it’s been far too long since the last good Resident Evil home console game. First impressions were good, and by first impressions I mean the title screen. Hearing the excellent atmospheric music over my TV speakers sent chills down my spine. My body was ready to enjoy 32 inches of Jill and Parker.

Enter the gameplay, so far so good. There’s a map and a quick weapon select on the bottom screen just like the 3DS game. Capcom already confirmed there would be no Wiimote aiming, so I got over that disappointment already. Unfortunately I was hit with a new disappointment, no motion aiming at all. Shooting and scanning are both done with the left analog stick. After playing ZombiU, this feels very unnatural. Every time I hit the R button to bring out the scanner I started moving the Wii U GamePad out of habit, and disappointment smacked me in the face every time when the reticule didn’t move. The analog stick is stiff and slow and we have better options now.

The movement and camera all function well, just like they did in the 3DS game. By camera I mean the standard view, the camera controls themselves haven’t changed. They abruptly shift the angle all the way to each side with no real balance or adjustments possible. Effectively there is no camera control, just a few different angles. It’s a bit of a shame because it makes it hard to peruse all the new detail in the objects. The graphics are fantastic even though it’s simply the 3DS game with a better resolution and more detail, but you can say that about any game. The game has a good style and they didn’t ruin it.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing here that makes it a Wii U game. They had 6 months to put Wii U features in and they’ve done nothing at all. The game doesn’t even use the GamePad speaker for voice transmissions. What’s the point? Are we really going backwards on Wii U’s potential already? I know it’s a port, but they are charging full price for it just like the Wii upgrade of Monster Hunter. I really don’t want this system to be like Wii, where Wii Sports and Red Steel were still the best examples of their genre three years later. This game is a lazy effort and gives me mixed emotions because I was looking for any excuse to play through the game again, and I can’t justify this. It’s a more expensive version of the 3DS game.

The demo is very short, there’s only about 8-10 enemies through the entire thing and it’s over in 20 minutes. Based on how barebones it is, I’m hopeful there’s some kind of upgrade in the full game that lets the scanner actually be a scanner. Otherwise, I’m happy with the 3DS game. The 3D effect is just as good as the graphical upgrade to me.

After enjoying an obsessive amount of Nano Assault Neo on Wii U, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Australian release of Nano Assault EX on 3DS. It still hasn’t come out but that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I’ve taken the plunge into the unknown, changing my identity to discover the joys of the UK eShop. It’s a simple as switching your 3DS region setting and it really is a joy to browse, there’s about 100 DSiWare games here I’ve never heard of because they didn’t make it past the expensive Australian rating system. Anyway, Nano Assault EX was my first multi-region download and my 3DS wasn’t ready for this explosion of awesome.

Really, it wasn’t ready. I don’t have the Circle Pad Pro attachment and this game depends heavily on it, finding out I had to use a 4-button layout in a twin stick shooter was a big letdown. You can only aim in 8 directions and diagonal shots are awkward to execute this way. I was also greeted with a sluggish framerate and the worst screen tearing I’ve ever seen (and the first time I’ve seen it on 3DS). It feels like the screen is crying in pain as it splits into thirds and tries to put itself back together, creating a weird wave on the screen in 3D mode. So here I am barely able to control my ship and I can hardly see anything; a really bad first impression. If I worked at IGN, Edge or Gamespot I’d call it a day right here and give the game a 3 out of 10.

Thankfully the game has another type of gameplay level, StarFox-style flying where you aim with the traditional Circle Pad. These levels look absolutely stunning, and while the framerate still isn’t perfect it’s much better than the twin-stick levels and has no screen-tearing except for one level with a watery surface (in fact the screen-tearing is so bad it makes me wonder if it’s some kind of splash effect gone wrong). Huge lively enemies swim around with robust animations, and obscure looking growths stick out of the cells surface and wiggle around. Bullets launch towards the screen in 3D and it looks incredible, the bullets themselves have depth. Then each level is topped off with this game’s crowning achievement – the boss fights.

Some of the boss fights are absolutely phenomenal, this is where Nano Assault EX takes a giant shit on the Wii U game. Instead of simple bosses that can be destroyed in 5 seconds with the right attack, these bosses put up a real fight. They have multiple stages of evolution, different attack patterns and they run through destructible environments daring you to keep up. There’s also a Boss Rush mode; which would have been my favourite mode if you could actually play all the bosses. Instead it’s split up into Boss Rush A, B and C with only three bosses in each option. There’s also one cool mid-game boss missing from this mode for some reason. Nevertheless, it’s still nice to play the best parts of the game without going through full levels in story mode to get there.

While the framerate in the twin-stick surface levels takes a big hit and the controls suck, the level design is quite interesting. The levels feature mazes, switches, moving objects, sliding doors and cells so big they have warp points. To counter any possible confusion on these huge cells, they’ve added some data on the bottom screen telling you how many enemies are left and how many regions remain unpurified. Unfortunately the map itself is frustrating, you have to pause the action to see it unlike the Wii U game, and it’s hard to figure out which way your ship is facing because the directional arrow is wrong. When you rotate the angle of the map it ALSO rotates the direction your ship is facing so you have no idea which way to go. When most levels are round surfaces this creates a huge headache, there’s often 1 final enemy remaining that takes a long time to track down. I found myself having to identify landmarks on the map, then going there in the game just to get a point of reference.

While there are some cool sights to see, the gameplay itself never really has a chance to shine. There’s just too many things to blame while hunting for high-scores.

“Oh, the framerate died and the enemy teleported into me”

“My ship was in between those bullets and I still got hit?”

“My thumb slipped on the circle pad”

“My bullets can’t penetrate that angle“

None of that is an issue in the Wii U game, which runs at a perfect 60FPS at all times with two responsive analog sticks. The framerate takes a huge hit mostly when there’s a ton of bullets on the screen, which is precisely the worst time for it to happen. Furthermore, half the levels require a Circle Pad Pro to play with precision. It’s impossible to even use the combo system in this game when you can’t aim for specific enemies and chain them together, instead it’s all about positioning. By the time you’ve rotated around an enemy to line up a shot the combo-counter has expired. It would be a different story if you have a Circle Pad Pro but I have no interest in turning my 3DS into frankenstein, and I played Resident Evil Revelations just fine without it. This is the only impression I can give, and it rubs me the wrong way that a game was designed to use this so heavily when it’s not part of the 3DS. The system has a touch screen that developers seem to have forgotten.

Overall I’d say this game is worth it just to see the most incredible texture work done on 3DS and some really fun boss fights. The graphics are such a mixed bag; some levels blew me away with textures that wouldn’t look out of place in a Wii U game, but the 3DS just can’t handle it and some parts are almost unplayable as a result. It also has a deeper 3D effect than most games, it looks great but I had to hold the 3DS further away to appreciate it. The level-design is inconsistent but I still plowed through story mode with excitement just to see how crazy the next level was. I might sound disappointed but it’s still an amazing game. It screams “look at all this cool shit!“, and some people might prefer that (most of you, considering nobody on my Wii U friends list even bothered to set a score in Nano Assault Neo’s Survival Mode) but I was hoping for a meatier gameplay experience. Despite having significantly more content I don’t see myself playing this as much as the Wii U game. Nano Assault EX is such a wild, unfocused experience that you have to ask yourself; can your 3DS handle it?
