It’s that time of year again when Australia’s Music industry celebrate this years best. So the question remains, whose going to be this years big winners.. and losers?

Jessica Mauboy has had a stellar year with her debut album Been Waiting and tops the list with 7 nominations, including breakthrough artist single with Running Back ft Flo Rida, Break through artist album, best female artist, highest selling album as well as highest earning single with Running Back and Burn.

LadyHawke

Many have already predicted that Jessica Mauboy will scoop tonight’s awards but she will have stiff competition when she comes up against New Zealand export LadyHawke. Nominated for five awards her catchy single My Delirium has been nominated for both single of the year and break through single of the year. Ladyhawke’s retro pop album of the same name has also been nominated for best pop release and break through Artist Album.

Female artist have dominated this years Australian Music scene with the likes of Sarah Blasko and Kate Miller-Heidki rounding out this years nominations list.

Melbourne group the Temper Trap burst on to the scene earlier this year with their song Sweet Disposition (500 Days of Summer Trailer) and followed up with equally brilliant single  The Science of Fear ( east West 101 promo) of their Conditions Album. Nominated for best Rock album the Temper Trap will be up against music rock legends AC/DC, Jet and Eskimo Joe.

The unique sound and collaboration of Nick Littlemore from Pnau and Luke Steel of the Sleep Jacksons brought us music gems like Walking on a Dream and We are the People. However only a couple of months ago Nick Littlemore walked away from the group leaving Luke Steel perform in a one man band. Empire of the Sun have been nominated for best group and despite recent dramas the nomination in this category will stand.

With a whopping 7 nominations its hard to go past Jess Mauboy for female artist of the year. She wont stop there also short prized favorite to pick up  break out single for Running Back and best pop release for Been Waiting.

My predictions for the big awards including single of the year is Empire of the Sun, Walking on a Dream and album of the year Empire of the Sun, Walking on a Dream.

It’s fairly easy to see that there will be two types of reactions to the New Moon soundtrack. One one hand you have the ‘mainstream’ media that will probably rate it highly, calling it something along the lines of ‘a great collection songs from of up-and-coming artists’. Then there’ll be the more indie crowd, who will undoubtedly slam it for encouraging screaming teenage girls to listen to the likes of Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear and Muse, thereby destroying any credibility these artists ever had in the process. But while it is very, very tempting to just scream ’sellout!’, after a proper listen the soundtrack actually is…good. Shock horror!

Music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, who has put her hand in the past to (quality) soundtracks for (questionable) shows like The OC and Gossip Girl, has certainly pulled out all the stops on this one. All of the tracks are previously unreleased or written specifically for the soundtrack, and there’s some big names that traverse both the indie and mainstream music worlds. Kicking off with the first single, ‘Meet me on the Equinox’ by indie darlings Death Cab for Cutie, it’s quickly apparent the kind of tunes that will be background to the sulking teenagers, tortured vamps and uber-buff werewolves in the film.

Arguably one of the biggest names on the CD is Thom Yorke, who contributes a darkly electronic number entitled ‘Hearing Damage’. Even with the absence of the rest of the band, the Radiohead frontman delivers. But really, is that any surprise?

The 16-track strong album continues with the likes of The Killers, Lykke Li and a ethereal collaboration between Bon Iver and St. Vincent. Muse, who author Stephanie Meyer has publicly expressed her love for, return with a special remix of ‘I Belong to You’. Lifted from their latest LP The Resistance, the remix feels slightly out of place with the rest of the album, featuring more glam and ditching the french lyrics of the original (because of course a bit of culture won’t sit in a film like this, will it?). All is forgiven though when critical darlings Grizzly Bear add their wonderful brand of folky rock with the track ‘Slow Life’, before Eskimo Joe round out the Australian edition. Not sure where that’ll go in the film, but it’s a decent bonus track nonetheless.

The big argument that will reside over this though won’t be the calibre of the music itself, but rather what the inclusion of these bands represents. Twilight is undoubtedly one of the biggest pop-culture phenomenons we’ve seen this decade. It just so happens that the author of the books likes alternative music, and the all of a sudden these relatively obscure bands are thrust into the spotlight. As the notion of what is ‘indie’ and what is ‘commercial’ is increasingly being brought into question, the New Moon soundtrack just blurs the boundaries further. But hey, if it means being able to enjoy an excellent collection of really good music that otherwise would not be available, then maybe that’s not such a bad thing.

It is always interesting when someone starts a sentence with “you know who you look like?”.  Inevitably, it ends with a comparison that is totally ridiculous, or someone you’ve never heard of, then you spend the rest of the week trying to work out how they came to that conclusion. 

Well, that’s pretty much what I have done this week with Eskimo Joe’s Kavyen Temperley.  I spotted him in the mX newspaper on Monday, and is it just me, or is he looking more and more like chat show host Ellen Degeneres?

I know what you’re probably thinking – ‘what the hell are you talking about’? But let it tick over for about a week, and you’ll see! 

Kav has one of the more interesting life stories for a rockstar, if Wikipedia is to be believed.  An excerpt below:

…as a seven year old Finlay Beaton changed his name to Satyam Kavyen Temperley – Temperley being his mother’s maiden name and the rest meaning “Poet of Truth“.

At the age of thirteen his mother took him to India where they stayed at the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune. It was there he learnt about an international alternative boarding school, Ko Hsuan, based on the teachings of controversial Indian mystic, Osho, in Devon.

I’ve left it to the Hollywood pros for a much more realistic comparison.  Owen Wilson, anyone?

They sure do because I’m broke (nothing new, seeing as I have no job) and won’t be able to convince my parents to buy me one as they’ve just bought me a Soundwave ticket lol which I’ve framed and is now sitting on a ledge in my bedroom.

If you are attempting to go online this morning to purchase Big Day Out tickets, think again…  The Gold Coast event is sold out!

50,000 tickets to the GOLD COAST BIG DAY OUT event have SOLD OUT in record breaking time.

The only way us Brisbanites could possibly attend BDO is by:

1. Buying a ticket for the Gold Coast show on eBay currently priced at $292.
2. Getting lucky with the online ballot allocation (5,000 tickets are being held).
3. Lining up outside: Rockinhorse Records (Brisbane), Sunflower Music (Broadbeach), Mosh Pit Music (Maroochydore) – But we’re pretty sure they are sold out there as well…
4. Going to the second Sydney show, or Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth shows (Tickets on sale Friday).

The reason for the second Sydney show was due to a Ticketmaster Glitch which allowed punters to buy tickets the night before.  News quickly spread around the social networking site Facebook. 

The newly announced second Big Day Out will be held on Saturday, 23rd January, the day after the original Sydney show on Friday, 22nd January. It will be the 100th Big Day Out show.

Tickets for the second Big Day Out show will go on sale Monday, 12th October at the TICKETMASTER WEBSITE.  Tickets are $140 + b/f.

Tickets go on sale for BDO on October 7th. So I only have five days to fully decide whether $140 is worth paying. And who I’m going to go with…

My musical heart was taken to Australia for a long amount of time back in 2006 and a part of me still remains with Eskimo Joe. When they released ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’, I was all over the music, they had the best record of the year and only people from down under really knew about it.

Eskimo Joe, I stumbled upon watching the Australian segment of Live Earth which they performed and after months of procrastinating I finally gave them a listen and fell in love. ‘Black Fingernails…’ was a great record from start to finish, songs to sing to and songs to cry to.

For three years the band had been rigorously touring in support of that record and eventually went into the studio to record – finally – some new material. ‘Inshalla’ was the final product and it may not have been as good as ‘Black Fingernails…’ it still brought a little change in the bands alternative / pop sound to more acoustic and emotional. Though there are still the pulsing songs that inhabit the record, ‘Inshalla’ can be taken less seriously than Black Fingernails… almost like a sophomore record, despite it being the bands fourth.

The album begins with ‘Foreign Land’ which pulses after a unique introduction into a steady acoustic strum and a thumping bass line. The opening line, “steady my shaky hands” brings out the excitement this record brings. The chorus of “this is what it feels to love and I can feel that” gets stuck in your head as this song endures for just under four and a half minutes. Epically, we are brought into the title track which starts with a great guitar riff and heavily beating drums. The song once again has a catchy chorus with the name of the song being repeated over and over again. It brings me back to ‘Setting Sun’ in some aspects form their previous record.

The next two tracks ‘Losing Friends Over Love’ and ‘Sound of Your Heart’ are very radio friendly and seem to have a lot of pop influence in them. Both songs are great to listen to, however they could have a bit more. ‘Sound of Your Heart’ has an interesting percussion aspect to it which is pleasing to listen to as you relax to this song.

Next a slow down in pace. ‘Childhood Behavior’ has strings, acoustics and raw vocals. Kav Temperley is brilliant in this intimate song that tells the story of an emotional relationship. The song is catchy and can really pick you up even though the tempo is down.

The down tempo of ‘Childhood Behavior’ is picked right up with ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, a chanting pulsing song that is catchy reminding me of ‘Sarah’ from ‘Black Fingernails…’. The lyrics are simple and the piano during the verses are very calming. The chorus brings life into the song and ends with a simple Kav vocal bring the tempo back down. This down tempo change brings the next track ‘Falling For You (Intro)’ easily into perspective as Kav just says a few longs with great vocal work which wish you had more to just this simple song.

However once the actually ‘Falling For You’ track begins drums begin to pulse yet again and repetition is key in this song as this song beats on and on throughout. Being just over three minutes, I was disappointed as this song had potential to be longer, however the song itself continues with a different name; ‘Losing My Mind’ as the drums continue to move on and on. This song is beautiful and very ‘Eskimo Joe’ if you will, with catchy lyrics such as; “Do I drive too much when I’m drunk?”. More background chanting keeps this song going.

As the album continues, ‘Your Eyes’ and ‘Please Elise’ seem too much like filler material as they are generic pop songs that really don’t hold too much significance as the previous tracks in the record held. These songs bring me back to ‘A Song Is A City’ in regards to the pop-ness of the tunes and how short they are. ‘Morning Light’, however, is another pulsing song with great steady drums and a driving vocal. There is a climax in the middle, yet it settles down in order to bring the album to a close.

Eskimo Joe: Joel, Kav, Stu

Overall, this album is not Eskimo Joe’s best. They did try to make a second ‘Black Fingernails…’ and did not reach their goal entirely. ‘Black Fingernails…’ now seems to me to be the benchmark for future Eskimo Joe records, however the use of more acoustics and unique percussion can lead them in a new direction.

I recommend listening to this record before ‘Black Fingernails…’ if you have not done so, and then you will be able to compare and hear just how close the two are. Inshalla is a great record nevertheless. The only problem Eskimo Joe faces with success is to be noticed and recognized with how great their music really is.

They seem to be the U2 or Coldplay of Australia. These three who have been around for the better part of ten years deserve a break, just like Elbow for instance. Their best work is yet to come, however their current material is nothing short of brilliant.

Heads Will Roll says…

The Australian summer is one filled with sunburn, beers, barbeques and music festivals and The Big Day Out is the oldest of them all. The BDO toured acts, which could never have performed in your town without the backing of month long festival. The Big Day Out became a right of passage of kids getting into the live music scene. It’s multi-genre set-up allowed for kids to try new and different styles of music for themselves. It really didn’t matter who was on the line-up because if there was an exciting touring act, come summer they would be playing at the Big Day Out. Now the industry has changed, international touring acts rarely skip cities and smaller, more genre specific festivals have launched, became popular and grown into large institutions of their own. With the massive influx of touring festivals the Big Day Out can’t keep expecting people to pay the large sums of money just for the “festival experience”. At least once a month, from October through to April every year, you can get drunk in the sun with a mob of like minded people to a backing of loud music. So now, more so than ever, the headliner AND the quality of the other acts on the line-up are becoming increasingly important. This year the Big Day Out has secured the services of Muse to bring their shows to a close. Muse will, without a doubt, put on an audiovisual experience worthy of the headliner slot, however do they justify the $140+bf ticket price alone? I suppose your opinion on Muse will answer that question for yourself. The second headliner looks at this stage to be Powderfinger and with Eskimo Joe and Grinspoon on the line-up the Big Day Out appears to be looking to its past line-ups for inspiration. Still a festival featuring the likes of Peaches, Dizzee Rascal, the Horrors, Kasabian, Lily Allen, Ladyhawke, Midnight Juggernauts and Girl Talk can’t be all bad can it?

Another Guy says… it’s going to be very hot, like every year.

The Australian Edition of the New Moon soundtrack will feature 1 bonus song by Australian band,  Eskimo Joe. The title of the song is ‘Thunderclap’.

Stuart MacLeod from Eskimo Joe says “It’s great to be a part of the global phenomenon that is Twilight. When approached about writing a song for the soundtrack, ‘Thunderclap’ seemed to be the perfect song for the album. It was a song we wrote early on in the album process for ‘ Inshalla’. It has a darkness to it, but also a real feeling of hope. I hope it’s a good match for the film.”

Every song on the soundtrack for the Twilight sequel New Moon is new.

Again, FAIL at being a blog writer, I’ve been hammered with work the last couple of months, so I’ve not found the time to write, but it’s been so much fun!

I was lucky enough to work on a few more shows recently, one for GHD Hair and another for Leona Edmiston at the Hilton.  I always love seeing the process behind the scenes as all the hair, makeup and styling takes place to create such a wonderful outcome.  Also, the gorgeous frocks are nothing to complain about either! I am loving the new Leona Collection, which is very suited to a Queensland Summer and oh so pretty!

Another one of the highlights of the last month was working on a video clip for Aussie band Eskimo Joe at an awesome mansion in Hamilton which was previously owned by Christopher Skase! My good friend Emma-Louise who is an amazing makeup artist gave me a yell to be part of her team for the day of the shoot, where we turned ordinary women (well, ex-models so I guess not quite so ordinary) into Cougars to get up to all sorts of trouble with the band members Kav, Joel and Stu, with the mansion providing an amazing backdrop.  It ended up being like ‘Dynasty on acid’ and I’ve never used so much bright lipstick (cue MAC Lipsticks in Impassioned, Lady Danger and Saint Germain) and shimmery eyeshadows (too much frost was just not enough!) in my life! Since things have been getting a little more personal around here lately, I have some news I just had to share with you.

I saw Eskimo Joe in concert last night!  They were awesome, as I expected, and played a bit of their old stuff mixed in with tracks of their new Album “Inshalla”.  I am sure it was as different for them playing at a sit-down venue as it was for us to stay sitting down – and,  most didn’t.

Supporting them was Bob Evans (Kevin Mitchell), who I REALLY enjoyed live and would have enjoyed him a lot more thoroughly if he’d only asked thought he was very talented.

After the show (and before the Joe came on) he was signing autographs – and since I was wearing a Splendour in the Grass t-shirt, I asked him to sign that for me.

Me: Would you do me a favour?  I’d love it if you’d sign my t-shirt…

Kevin Mitchell:  Sure, where would you like me to sign?

Me: On my cock.  Thanks!

 He laughed and tried not to make eye contact, but deep down I think he really wanted me to leave.

That’s right.  I basically asked Kevin Mitchell to sign my cock.  And now I can cross one more thing off my list of ‘Things to do before I die’.  Awesome.

Eskimo Joe and Bob Evans live

In 2006, Eskimo Joe released Black Fingernails, Red Wine, an album that went double platinum and made Eskimo Joe one of the biggest bands in Australia. On their forth album Inshalla it is easy to the see that the bad are hoping for a repeat performace. With help of UK producer Gil Norton  (The Pixies)  and a few Middle Eastern influences, Eskimo Joe have recorded a solid album that highlights the band’s abilty to create catchy songs without messing with the formula too much. The result is a glossy album that lacks the charm that made the band’s early albums so good.

The first track on the album and single Foreign Land, which is said to have been inspired by Heath Ledger’s death, unexpectedly begins with a Middle Eastern instrumental before launching into a catchy rock song that is probably as close to an epic track as Eskimo Joe have ever been. Unfortunatly by about the tenth listen this becomes rather grating and lyrics like “I smell the blood of an Australian” come off a little cringeworthy, rather than thought provoking and emotional. The Middle Eastern influences continue throughout the album, especially on Falling for You, which is inexplicably seperated into two tracks when it would have worked much better as one.

This album contains some of the band’s catchiest songs. Losing Friends Over Love is definetly one of them, with a chourus that sounds like it was built for commercial radio. The Sound Of Your Heart is the closest to early Eskimo Joe on this album and also one of the stand out tracks. The best track on this album, however, is Childhood Behaviour. This ode to rockstar parenthood  features violin and acousic guitar and is a refreshing change from the slick widescreen sounds of the rest of the album.

Although this is the bands most accomnplished album musically, the whole record lacks  intamacy and charm. The songs are good but it feels like the band are trying too hard to become a stadium  success. Most of the songs sound quite generic and it’s easy to imagine them being flogged on commerical radio and featured on channel 10 promos in the near future. And this is not a good thing.

Sooo, who do I want to rave about? I think Stars definitely deserves a mention. I can’t believe I didn’t know about them until now. Don’t you hate how that happens when you stumble across an amazing amazing band and you can’t stop kicking yourself over why you didn’t know about them earlier and instead have been wasting your time over comparatively sub-par music? ‘Undertow’ and ‘Take me to the Riot’ are definitely my favs right now. Am discovering I really have a thing for airy ethereal sounding female voices. Probably explains my secondary addiction to that iPod ad song… whatzit? ‘Bruises’?

Now the other band I want to declare perpetual affection for right now is The Cat Empire. Was it you Chloe, who I was discussing Aussie bands with once and I think Eskimo Joe and Powderfinger came up? And I said something about how I haven’t really bothered with hunting out decent Melb bands. Well I have just found one courtesy of Nathan. Going to see them perform live in a few weeks so I thought I’d do a little bit of youtube research and see what I came up with. They. Are. A. Maze. Ing. The tunes are fun, upbeat and makes me want to do the bouncy-castle-carpet-hairbrush-mic-dance.
