Όταν το 2003 ο Federico Aubele κυκλοφόρησε τον πρώτο δίσκο του, Gran Hotel Buenos Aires, παραλίγο θα διέπραττα ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα λάθη της ζωής μου, με το να μην το αγοράσω. Όταν όμως σε κάθε περιοδικό έβλεπες αυτό το babyface με την αφανά, σκεφτόσουν μήπως παίζει και κάτι παραπάνω. Αν θα έπρεπε να διαλέξω τα 5 καλύτερα albums της δισκοθήκης μου, τότε αυτό θα βρισκόταν σίγουρα μέσα σε αυτά. Άλλωστε, η πρώτη επαφή με τον Aubele, είναι και αυτή που σε σημαδεύει για μια ζωή. Ένας ανεπανάληπτος δίσκος, που ακούγεται από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Δεν θα μπώ στη διαδικασία να εξηγήσω περισσότερα. Trust your gut feeling and check it out… 4,5/5 !

Ένα album το οποίο μπορεί να μην έκανε ιδιαίτερη αίσθηση την περίοδο που κυκλοφόρησε. Παρόλα αυτά, εκπροσωπεί επάξια τον ήχο και την κουλτούρα της ESL Music, των Thievery Corporation. Lounge, downtempo και dub, σε ένα δισκάκι, που με τον “ζεστό” του ήχο, θα σας συντροφεύσει ευχάριστα το καλοκαίρι. Αν και σχετικά παλιό, εξακολουθεί να είναι διαχρονικό. 3,5/5…

WOW! Today I was going to post some mash up music that is still hot as hell when you drop it!  I am hungover today and can’t deal with listening to club music when all I want to do is go back to sleep!

Since I found myself back at my favorite hot spot in DC, FLY Lounge, I figured I would post some down tempo music that is made right down the street you guys!  Before I get right into the music, I did want to point out that FLY is the tits! It is the bees knees! If you have not been, you NEED to go!  The staff is great.  Everyone from the door man to the bartenders, including my favorites, Lindsay, Mike, Wilmont and Niki (I hope that’s how you spell your name) just to name a few!

OK, back to work…  I am going to give you some Thievery Corporation today.  For those who don’t know, these guys have their own record label based out of DC.  It is called ESL Music.  ESL stands for Eighteenth Street Lounge, because YES they used to own the club.  They ended up selling it to create the record label.  You can still hear them spinning their every now and then.

OH! One more thing and I will have to thank Lindsay at FLY for this one.  I am making this site iPhone compatible.  I was showing her the site and realized that posting just the player is not great for people using mobile browsing.  I am adding the links so that even the folks with iPhone’s can listen in on the music.  Thank you Lindsay!

WG at ESL Music replied with a definitive answer to the question I belabored in my last post. I figured it was best to post it rather than leave it in the previous post’s comments section. WG’s response follows a few responses of my own:

First, thanks to WG for taking the time to answer.

Second, I recognize that I hyperbolized the state of Thievery Corporation on compilations.

Third, I admit that I was knocking something I don’t seem to understand.

Fourth, I put all my support – for what it’s worth – behind musicians doing what they need to do to get theirs. As I said, I’d be just as likely as the next guy to make those kinds of calls.

Hi blog people, just wanted to chime in here and say a few things. I’ve been ESL Music’s licensing manager for four years now, and I have licensed one Thievery track to Banana Republic for one compilation three years ago, and one to Pottery Barn this year (neither were titled as stated above, but I chuckled). Hardly the deluge of compilations you insinuate.

I should also mention that licensees do need to contact me for permission to use music, and having that veto power means we always have full control of our music. Maybe you could help me out and list all these furniture store comps you’ve been seeing lately so I can file the appropriate lawsuits.

Furthermore, I work for a totally independent music label, owned and operated by a totally independent band. As you may have heard, most music is disseminated and acquired illegally these days so it becomes harder and harder for independent musicians to make a living through legitimate music sales. Contrary to popular belief, live shows are also doing poorly these days (many recent US festivals like Vegoose and Langerado have tanked) so alternate means of income are absolutely necessary.

Licensing is a big part of our business and it is a major reason why we have a viable and competitive company with employees and a full roster of musicians who don’t have to work two or three jobs, besides music, just to make rent. We’re all proud of what we do here, and you may call it “selling out” but we call it a living. Although it does make for clever and funny blog entries, you shouldn’t knock what you don’t seem to understand.
