This week’s edition of ESPN College GameDay was in Tucson for the Arizona/Oregon game, and although they had a great crowd, I don’t know that any crowd the rest of the year will top TCU from last week. This was the first time GameDay visited Arizona, and the sixth week in a row that the show has been in the western half of the country.

A few observations from this week: 1) The guest picker was Arizona alum and Olympic gold medalist Amanda Beard (yes, she picked AZ) 2) Jenn Brown was back yet again with an interview with Jim Harbaugh. 3) The Washington State flags made it once again, which makes this the 88th straight broadcast they have been present. This time there were actually three flags rather than the usual two. You can find more details on this tradition HERE.

Now let’s move onto the best signs of the day. With Arizona playing Oregon there was obviously a lot of duck humor. Countless Duck Hunt signs, ‘I’m eating Duck for Thanksgiving’, etc., but I only posted a few because if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all:

Quick back-story on this sign…the Arizona Wildcat mascot (Wilbur) used to have a gun in a holster, and the University banned this a few years ago:

"Give Wilbur his guns back...it's duck season"

One of the main things I was looking forward to was seeing the plethora of LeGarrette Blount signs:

"LeGarrette Blount you SOCK"

"Arizona Smoking Blounts"

"E.S.P.N. - Who is LeGarrette Sucker Punching Next?

As always, my personal favorites are signs that deal with the GameDay crew, and Corso always seems to get the most attention:

"Lee Corso is Hot!"

Just in case your clueless on this one:

As shown in the sign above, even though Zona isn’t playing Arizona State, it’s never a bad time to make fun of your rival. I didn’t know it but I guess Arizona State students need Hooked on Phonics:

"If you can read this sign you don't go to ASU"

More random Arizona fans talking smack to Oregon:

"Oregon?
Will making fun of Kanye for his VMAs incident ever get old?

In case you didn’t already know, it is illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon (yes, I’m serious, look it up):

"We pump our own gas"

I couldn’t get a shot of the full sign, but I had to post this one anyway. In case you didn’t know, Oregon never wears the same uniform combo in the same season:

"Oregon has a bigger wardrobe than Paris Hilton"

Is “Duck” now being considered as a curse word?

I couldn’t get a full shot of this one either, but this was definitely one of the better signs of the week so I’m posting what I got:

"Can't spell _umb F____ without Ducks!"

Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli should be scared to play this week after these signs…Arizona has injured Oregon’s QB the past couple times they’ve played in Tucson:

"2005, Kellen Clemens, broken ankle. 2007, Dixon, torn ACL. 2009, Masoli, you're next"

Is Jeremiah Masoli a gay fish? Hmmm, learn something new every day I guess. [See Urban Dictionary post for insight]:

Even the Arizona fans like to make fun of their own QB’s hair:

"Foles' hair throws TDs"

Fellow fans, below you will find a poll that will allow you to vote for your favorite sign from this past weekend’s version of College GameDay that was filmed at TCU. If you need to review the pictures again you can do so in this post. Usually there are a solid 8 to 12 signs that are clearly the best, but this week it was hard to narrow down below 20. If I left a sign off the poll that you feel strongly about, leave a comment below and I can add it to the poll.

I’ve allowed you to vote for multiple signs in case you can’t pick just one. I’ll keep a running track of the most popular signs throughout the season, and have a final vote at the end of the year for the best sign of the year. If you didn’t vote for your favorite sign from the Air Force GameDay, click HERE. As of now it looks like “Please B-Spikes, I need my eyes to be a pilot”, “Spikes 4 H”eyes”man”, and “Study hard or you’ll end up at Army” are moving on to the sign playoffs so far. Don’t forget to send in your That Fan Fantasy Gameday contest submissions…you can see my favorite entry so far HERE. Rock the vote!

This week’s edition of ESPN College Gameday was in Fort Worth for the TCU/Utah game, and I have to say that this was the best crowd so far this year. There may have been more people at some of the other shows, but the sign to fan ratio was off the charts. The reason it took me so long to get the sign pictures up was because there were just too damn many of them to go through! This was the first time Gameday visited TCU, and I must say that they deserve another visit in the future.

A few observations from this week: 1) The guest picker was former Heisman trophy winner Desmond Howard…wait a minute, isn’t he on every week? 2) Jenn Brown was back again with a story on Stanford RB Toby Gerhart. You can see the video HERE. 3) The Washington State flags made it once again, which makes this the 87th straight broadcast they have been present. Read my article for more details on this tradition HERE.

Now let’s move onto the best signs of the day. TCU fans are still bitter over the Big 12 passing them over for Baylor:

"Hey You, Big XII, Regretting that Baylor decision yet?"

We have to have the usual Utah smack talk:

"God blessed Texas. Utah?"

"Who? Tah"

This next sign showed that Jordan Wynn and Clay Aiken may be twins (see for yourself HERE and HERE):

A personal favorite of mine is when the crowd mixes in the Gameday crew into their signs and TCU did not disappoint. Corso looked to be the most popular:

"Corso the Frog Prince"

That’s all the signs for this week (although there were probably another 50 that didn’t make the cut). Be sure to check back in the next couple days for the poll to vote for your favorite sign of the week. I’ll put together a survey at the end of the year for people to select the best sign of the year. If you didn’t vote for last week’s sign yet, you can do so HERE.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone that I am starting a contest where those of you who couldn’t make it to Gameday can still show off your signs to fans around the world. Here is the best sign submitted this week by reader Nate:

Chances are Tom Pounds will never be a household name, although in my eyes he should be. As all you

Chances are Tom Pounds will never be a household name, although in my eyes he should be. As all you faithful readers know, I like to recognize fans for going above and beyond and being That Fan. Tom Pounds is about as good of an example that I have come across, and that is why he is That Fan of the Month for November 2009.

So who is Tom Pounds you ask? Let me walk you through how I found him…when I started this blog about a month ago, my goal was to write about a side of sports that you can’t get elsewhere, the sports fan. You can go to a million sites to talk sports, but where can you visit a site that focuses solely on fans? One of the best scenes of amazing fans is on Saturday morning College Gameday broadcasts. I’ve always watched College Gameday, but only after starting this blog did I start watching it in extreme detail, including all of the scenery in the background (signs, flags, hand gestures, etc.).

As I started covering the show for That Fan, I noticed I was seeing two Washington State flags at every broadcast. It didn’t matter what school the show was at, those flags were there. I was completely fascinated by this, because let’s be honest, Washington State hasn’t really had a great program lately. I mentioned the flags on a few of my posts and thankfully a reader pointed out that there was a fan out there who had been organizing this to happen. I immediately did my research, found out the tradition was started by Tom Pounds, and reached out to him for an interview which he agreed to. This weekend will mark the 87th consecutive broadcast that the Washington State flags have been flying on Gameday, an amazing accomplishment. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed doing it. My goal is to get this amazing story out for all fans to read!

That Fan: How did you become a Washington State fan and how long have you been cheering on the Cougars?
Tom Pounds: I am a WSU alum from the class of 1981. I have been a fan since I was a kid.

That Fan: What was the first time you had the WSU flags present at a Gameday and why did you decide to start the tradition?
Tom Pounds: The first time I did the College Gameday show was Oct 4, 2003. I knew the show was going to be in Austin that Saturday and I was going to be there visiting relatives. 2 weeks later a Coug fan in Minneapolis asked me to ship him the flag and he drove 300+ miles to the show in Madison, WI. A week later a guy in Olympia, WA volunteered his daughter to do the show in Bowling Green. After that, I just kept finding people to ship the flag to, week after week. From Madison, on, it has been 87 shows in-a-row (as of 11/14/09). Why? There is a phrase known to WSU fans and alums alike, “It’s a Coug thing”. We WSU fans and alums have been known for some crazy things on campus.

That Fan: Has anyone from College Gameday ever contacted you about the streak and what you do?
Tom Pounds: Several Northwest newspapers picked up on the story in 2003 and 2004 — I had several interviews. USA Today did a story on the flag last year. ESPN also interviewed me on camera last year:

That Fan: I’m sure you’ve seen the WSU flag commercial for Gameday (shown below), did they contact you before they did the commercial? What did you think when you first saw it?

Tom Pounds: Yes I’ve seen it. Several Coug fans got to see an advance copy of the promo a week before it supposedly aired. A friend of my brother says he has seen it on-the-air, but I haven’t seen it except on Youtube and in the advance-viewing. I didn’t have anything to do with ESPN making the promo, but I absolutely love it!

That Fan: College Gameday’s Twitter account said a new Washington State flag commercial would be unveiled this week at College Gameday. Do you know anything about it that you can share?
Tom Pounds: I don’t know anything about a new commercial, nor have I seen any advance viewings of anything new.

That Fan: Do people travel to each site or do you typically find someone who lives in the location of where Gameday is being taped?
Tom Pounds: Typically fans and alums live within 50 miles of where the show is being broadcast that week. This year, the exception has been the show at Penn State. The WSU grad/Penn State grad student who was there, had graduated. New York city and New Jersey Cougs had to drive 250 miles to cover it (my Pittsburgh guys were nowhere to be found either).

That Fan: How do you find people in other cities? For instance, if a school is getting a broadcast for the first time, do you have to track someone down or will people reach out to you wanting to do it?
Tom Pounds: Back in 2003 and 2004 finding people was difficult. Other than the first 2 weeks in-a-row (as mentioned before), I used a network of Coug alums and fans from the Scout.com sports board: Cougfan.com. It was strictly by word-of-mouth and through Cougfan that I found people to do the shows. Some people had to drive hundreds of miles to get to the shows. Eventually I got a ‘critical mass’ of WSU alums and fans on my list but even in 2005 some weeks I was ’sweating it out’ on late Thursday (deadline to ship overnight to Friday). Last year and this year WSU fans are e-mailing me ahead of time wanting to wave the flags on the show. I now have (at latest count) 134 people on my list in just about every city ESPN normally goes to. Sometimes the WSU alumni office will assist in finding someone, but that’s rare that I have to ask for help.

That Fan: Are the flag carriers always Washington State fans or are they people who have agreed to help you out?
Tom Pounds: I’d say 90% of the flag-wavers are WSU alums. Certainly the other 10% are *fans* of what we do. Some regular flag-wavers are actually alums of other schools.

That Fan: Are you ever worried someone is secretly a Washington fan looking to sabotage you?
Tom Pounds: Back in 2003 and 2004, sabotage was always a concern. Through 2005, 2006, and 2007 not so much, as I had my crew of regulars doing the shows. As the effort gained popularity and more people asked to be put on the list, I started to worry more about sabotage, again. The WSU alumni office will verify anyone claiming to be an alum and I have used this service many times. Other fan websites (scout.com, rivals.com etc. — for the school hosting Gameday) will always post about the CGD show coming to their school. Reading those threads is very telling. I have read posts of host school fans plotting against the WSU flag, but in every case they are chastised by the majority of the others on that board.

That Fan: Is there anything else in it for the flag carriers other than knowing they are a part of the streak? Do you pay them or do they get to keep the flags?
Tom Pounds: Everyone who does the show and waves the WSU flag is a volunteer. An organization called the Ol’ Crimson Booster Club, a grassroots organization of WSU alums and fans collects money to pay for shipping costs, but if someone has to travel more than about 100 miles we will pay for their gas. Doing the show is a great experience.

That Fan: What is your typical week of preparation like in getting the flags there for Gameday, starting with when you find out where the show will be located?
Tom Pounds: My typical week for getting the flags on the show starts with reading the ESPN site late Sunday afternoon to find out where they will be the following Saturday. Keep in mind — even the ESPN producers do not generally know where the show will be more than 6 days in advance. Once I know where they will be, I look on my list to see who is in that city (or geographic area) and I send out e-mails. Sometimes I will make a phone call, too. Usually, by Monday I have a name of someone who is available to do the show. Back in 2003 and 2004, “Usually”, was Thursday — talk about stress! Once I have a name (and address), I simply pass that information to the person who has the flags. This comes as a standard set of instructions for how to fill out a FedEx Airbill, complete with the account number. The flags usually arrive at the next person’s home by Friday afternoon and they take them to the show the next morning. FedEx hasn’t failed us, yet.

That Fan: I think I read somewhere that you make the flags, is that true?
Tom Pounds: Like I said before, the first flag was hand-made by my mom (visiting at the time). All the rest of the flags have been hand sewn by my wife, Syndie (who passed away last January).

That Fan: How many sets of your flags are out there?
Tom Pounds: There is one set of flags, only: a burgundy/crimson nylon flag, a white nylon flag, and a commercial nylon flag (donated by the WSU book store in 2003). In addition there is a cloth flag for autographs. Some of the past flags have been retired but replaced with newer identical ones. 3 have been lost in transition — 1 off the back of a pickup truck; two fallen out of a broken shipping tube.

That Fan: How much money do you spend on doing this?
Tom Pounds: Back in 2003 a non-profit corporation was set up in Washington to raise money and distribute funds for this effort. WSU fans have donated thousands of dollars over the years to keep this thing going. Our annual budget is approximately $2,500.00. That includes all shipping costs, things like new flagpoles, material for new flags, and paying for some people’s travel expense. Remember that guy who volunteered his daughter to go to Bowling Green? He’s the one who set up the corporation — the Ol’ Crimson Booster Club.

That Fan: You seem to be quite the Washington State celebrity. Does anyone from the school administration ever reach out to you?
Tom Pounds: The WSU AD asked me to speak at 2 fundraisers earlier this year. I also spoke at a fund-raiser in 2004. The athletic department wants me to help set up a web site with information on the flag.

That Fan: How long do you envision keeping this going?
Tom Pounds: My immediate goal is to see the flag present at 100 CGD shows in-a-row. This will happen next year. After that I would like to see ESPN bring the show to Pullman, WA. Even then there isn’t any real reason to quit. I might have someone else take over if I get tired of doing the organizing.

That was a great interview. If any of you have additional questions for him, let me know and I will try and get them answered. If you’d like to donate money to the cause you can find more info HERE. I’m looking forward to seeing if a new WSU flag commercial is unveiled this week on Gameday. Tom – you ‘da man!

ESPN’s College Gameday will be held in Fort Worth this week at the site of the match-up between TCU and Utah. I was extremely pumped when I heard this; not because I’m a TCU fan or because I think they will have the best signs all year (not saying they couldn’t either), but because I finally get to post a TCU picture that I’ve been trying to find a reason to post (see below). This is a huge game with BCS implications and marks the first time a Gameday broadcast has been to TCU. Another interesting fact: Gameday has been to three Mountain West Conference schools the past four weeks (BYU, Air Force, TCU).

My team of choice (as I’ve previously said, they haven’t shown enough on the field this year for me to reveal who they are yet) plays an early afternoon game so signs will have to come Saturday evening, so be sure to stop by the blog and check them out. If you will be at Gameday this weekend, please send me pictures of signs and I will be sure to post them and give you credit. I will also be holding another contest similar to the contest ran last week for any fan that can give That Fan a shot-out on a sign this weekend. Can’t make it to Fort Worth? Make your own sign and send it to me so I can post them (click here for more details)!

Fellow fans, below you will find a poll that will allow you to vote for your favorite sign from this past weekend’s version of College Gameday that was filmed at Air Force. If you need to review the pictures again you can do so in this post.

I’ve allowed you to vote for multiple signs in case you can’t pick just one. I’ll keep a running track of the most popular signs throughout the season, and have a final vote at the end of the year for the best sign of the year. If you didn’t vote for your favorite sign from the Oregon Gameday, click HERE. As of now it looks like “Matt Barkley Reads Twilight” and “Warning: Trojans ineffective against the spread of-fense (…and crabs)” are the favorites. As for the That Fan Fantasy Gameday contest, I’ve gotten several submissions but will probably wait to post them until we get a few more, so send them in! Rock the vote!

This week’s edition of ESPN College Gameday was in Colorado Springs for the Air Force/Army game, and

This week’s edition of ESPN College Gameday was in Colorado Springs for the Air Force/Army game, and I was very impressed with the crowd and the signage. This was the third Gameday broadcast from Air Force, the last being in 2002. Wondering why they chose Air Force rather than Ohio St./Penn St. and LSU/Bama? ESPN did this as part of their continuing tribute to the United States armed forces, and kudos to ESPN for doing so. On behalf of That Fan I also want to thank all military personnel out there for all you do.

A few observations from this week: 1) The guest picker was Lt. Colonel Scott “Spike” Thomas, an all-American safety at Air Force in 1985. Spike’s plane was shot down in Iraq in the original Gulf War. 2) Jenn Brown was back again and yes, she’s still pretty damn hot. 3) No one won this week’s That Fan contest, so we will try again next week. 4) There were quite a few guys proposing to their significant other via a Gameday sign.

Now let’s move onto the best signs of the day. With this being a rivalry game there were obviously a lot of signs slamming the other team, but it sure is odd seeing signs making fun of the armed forces. First up, lets start with all the rivalry signs:

"The Good (Air Force), The Bad (Navy), The Ugly (Army)"

Again, this is very odd posting signs that say these types of things but if our armed forces can make the signs, I figured I could at least post them…

"Bomb Army"

"Hey Army: We're gonna pound you into the ground!"

"E.S.P.N.: Air Force, fixin' Army's problems since 1947"

Double bonus here with the sign and the website. Be sure to thank our troops and visit www.ourmilitary.mil:

Corso definitely got a lot of love today:

"General Corso --->" (Great sign placement!)

This next one needs some explaining. At first I didn’t know why the hell this guy would have a sign that says this, but after doing some research I found a pretty funny story that I think explains it:

"Lee Corso: Naked Man!"

Air Force fans are still bitter about basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik leaving them:

"I will find you Bzdelik!"

Now, now. I’m sure Alabama’s Terrance “Mount” Cody has a very healthy diet:

"Mt.
Iowa fans had a decent presence today, but only one sign worth showing:

"Rock out with your Hawk out"

This guy followed through on his promise to mom to get on TV. Bonus – he made it on That Fan as well:

"I promised mom I'd be on TV!!!"

I’m surprised we only saw two Brandon Spikes signs after his eye-gouging performance:

"Spikes for H'eyes'man"

Looks like Matt Barkley and Army QB Trent Steelman have something in common. Will we see another added to the list next week?

"T.
The remaining signs are all Air Force related:

"United States Department of D-Fence"

I think this was an Army guy making fun of Air Force grammar…I think:

"Me like planes"

This is a two-sign combo, comparing Steve Urkel to Air Force linebacker Andre Morris (click here for a better Morris picture). Has anyone seen both of these guys in the same room at the same time?:

"The Good Urkel, The Bad A$$ Morris"

Another two sign combo, this time a serious version:

"Two teams, one nation" & "Thank you soldiers! College Gameday, Veteran's day, EVERYDAY!"

As much as civilians thank the armed forces, they would like to show some love back:

"Thank you TAXPAYERS!"

I wish I could have gotten a full shot of this one:

"E.S.P.N.: Taxpayer Dollars Pay My Tuition!"

Air Force fans wanted Corso to pick them…

…and he did just that:

Lastly, I’ve got to show the Washington State flags flying proudly…special story on this to come this week:

That’s all the signs from today’s episode. Be sure to check back today or tomorrow for the poll to vote for your favorite sign of the week.

Use the template below and photoshop or edit your message. Click HERE to learn more details on how to enter the contest!

How many of you have ever been to an actual ESPN College Gameday broadcast? Hopefully a lot of you,

How many of you have ever been to an actual ESPN College Gameday broadcast? Hopefully a lot of you, buy my guess is maybe 10% or 15% of you. I was lucky enough to go to a couple, most notably the “Bush Push” game where USC beat Notre Dame after Matt Leinart got shoved into the endzone by Reggie. Anyways, the atmosphere is amazing, and as cool as it looks on TV, it is even better in person.

I’m starting something new this week that I hope catches on, and that I think can have the potential to be something pretty big. Now, I can’t promise you this new addition to That Fan will help you get a sense of the fun atmosphere of being at a Gameday, but I can give you the excitement of getting your sign broadcasted to fans across the country.

Starting this week, I’d like to start a contest for all you fans who want to make a College Gameday sign but can’t make it to a broadcast to get your sign shown. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the “That Fan Fantasy Gameday” contest. This may last one week, it may last for decades, that all depends on you. I’m giving you a template for a blank sign below, photoshop/edit it however you please, and make the sign you would make if Gameday was at your school this week!

I haven’t worked out all the details on how this is going to work yet, but I thought the idea was too good to delay. This is what I’m thinking…I will personally view each and every sign created and pick the best ones to be voted on each week in a poll by the readers. The winners will get some sort of prize and be entered into the year-end vote for the best sign of the year. As for prizes, I’m not sure yet, but I’ll think of something soon and get back to you.

How can you enter your sign? Two ways: 1) email it to info@thatfan.com. 2) Upload it to Twitter and let me know via @ThatFan. This is my preferred method because even if I don’t pick your sign to post to the site, other people can still see them by doing a search on Twitter. Maybe we start a trending topic like #ThatFan (if you aren’t on Twitter or don’t know what a trending topic is, let me know and I’ll give you the scoop). Yes, you can submit multiple entries and I actually encourage it. For this week’s contest, please submit all signs by Sunday at 11:59PM.

Again, this contest could fizz out after this week, and I don’t expect a ton of entries this week, but I think it has the potential to grow to be a huge and fun thing for fans to look forward to every week. Post a comment with your thoughts!

Last week I held the first contest here at That Fan, basically to get the site mentioned on a sign at the Oregon broadcast. I wasn’t able to spot any winners, although the crowd was enormous and most of the signs never got on camera. What I’m asking is for someone who is going to be in the crowd to get That Fan some pub on a sign. It doesn’t have to be on a sign all to its own, so you can do whatever sign you have planned and then just throw “That Fan” somewhere on the sign (make sure it is still visible). Better yet, make it large and throw it on the back of your sign. I know, I know, “What’s in it for me?”

Well, if I can see the sign on TV for even just a few seconds, I’ll give you a $25 gift card to anywhere of your choice. If the sign gets major airtime, I’ll up it to $50. If it is a particularly good sign I’ll just send you the money via PayPal. You will also get MAJOR pub on this site of course! That might not sound like much but considering I’m funding this out of my own wallet, and assuming you are more than likely a college student, its drinking money you didn’t have previously. How do you claim your prize? Send me a picture of you holding your sign, and I will compare it to the sign I saw on TV to make sure it is the same sign. Easy as that. **Just an FYI, if a miracle occurs and I see 20 signs showing up on the broadcast, I reserve my right to provide gift cards only to the best signs!** Examples for your sign, although I encourage creativity: “I AM THAT FAN”, “THATFAN.COM”, “blog.thatfan.com”, etc. I am running this contest every week going forward (including basketball season!) so if your school is hosting Gameday in the future, keep checking the site for details.

Reader Submissions is something I’d like to do a few times a week where I share pictures that blog readers have sent in for me to share with everyone. I am not biased so if you have a picture that you think is cool, chances are I will as well, and then I’ll post it. What am I looking for? Pictures of crazy fans, sexy female sports fans, funny shirts, funny signs, cheerleaders, etc. What are you waiting for? Send pictures to: info@thatfan.com

Our first picture of the day comes from Jeremy in Oregon, who just so happens to be the same fan I pointed out that was throwing the shocker behind Lee Corso as he hopped on the motorcycle at Gameday (click here for the video). Jeremy found That Fan and was also kind enough to send this beauty of a Kodak moment of him throwing the shocker up with Nike founder Phil Knight. I prefer to call this one the Nike Shocker…Great work Jeremy!

The Shocker: Just Do It!

The next picture comes from Danny in Cincinnati, and is his version of this week’s “Our Cheerleaders are Hotter”. He apparently is a Florida State fan, and although they may be having some issues with their head coach, they don’t look to be having any issues with their cheerleaders.

Our Cheerleaders are Hotter - FSU Style

The last picture of the day comes from Nate in Louisville, and is actually a picture I’ve been meaning to get around to posting anyway, so a big thanks to Nate for reminding me. What would a day at That Fan be like without some Jenn Brown? Dull. Very dull. With no further delay, I give you Jenn Brown’s Halloween costume from this year:

Ten yards is worth a holding penalty if you ask me...

I’ve allowed you to vote for multiple signs in case you can’t pick just one. I’ll keep a running track of the most popular signs throughout the season, and have a final vote at the end of the year for the best sign of the year. If you didn’t vote for your favorite sign from the BYU Gameday, click HERE. As of now it looks like “Erin Andrews is a Cougar” and “Hey Weis, Mix in a Salad” are the favorites. Rock the vote!

**Editor’s note: getting crazy traffic right now thanks to the link on SI.com. Be sure to bookmark That Fan, we do a College Gameday sign review every week! You can also follow us on Twitter (@ThatFan) which will update you when new articles are posted.** Voting for the best sign from this week can be done HERE.

This week’s edition of ESPN College Gameday was in Oregon for the USC/Oregon game, and the crowd definitely did not disappoint. The show started at 7am PT and there might have been more fans at that time than any other broadcast this year; amazing considering it was still dark outside. The only bad thing about having such a large crowd was that there were a ton of signs that couldn’t really be viewed well on TV because they were so far back in the crowd.

A few observations from this week: 1) Again, I saw two Washington State flags (one maroon, one white) in the crowd. Big shot out to their fans because I haven’t seen one episode this year where there weren’t two WSU flags, and I haven’t seen any other schools with that kind of support. 2) Phil Knight, CEO of Nike and big Oregon booster was the guest picker, and surprise surprise, he picked the Ducks. 3) Jenn Brown was back and she is still drop dead gorgeous (more on this later). 4) No one won this week’s That Fan contest, so we will try again next week. 5) I couldn’t get a good shot of it, but there was a sign advertising the website www.BCSbusters.com. Figured I’d help them get the word out. Now onto the signs I could get (it was still dark out for the first hour of the show, so some of the pictures won’t be great quality):

First I want to provide a couple that have some sayings made popular by my favorite NFL wide receiver, Chad Ochocinco. Chad was an Oregon State Beaver so it’s good to see him getting some love from the Oregon crowd:

"Child Please"

"Kiss The Baby"

Lee Corso’s illegitimate son made the trip to Eugene:

"Lee Corso Is My Father"

I take back what I said earlier about the Oregon crowd showing Oregon State love:

"Gameday Visits: Eugene - 4, Corvallis - 0"

This next sign offers a spin on Charles Barkley’s TV show with Hank Haney, The Haney Project:

"Not even The Haney Project can save this Barkley's game!"

It wouldn’t be Oregon with out references to getting “Ducked Up”"

"Mom, I'm ducked up on quack"

"USC Get Ducked Up!!"

What are the odds this guy was drunk?:

"I Love Scotch"

I’m not sure who Superman is on this sign but my guess is either Dwight Howard or Desmond Howard (in case you have no clue what this sign means, its a play on the Soulja Boy song):

"Superman that O"

This one isn’t a sign and you could barely see it, but apparently someone be-headed a Trojan and brought the bloody head on a stake:

Not a sign, but a bloddy Trojan head on a stick

This one needs no introduction:

"doUSCebag"

Not sure of the point, but if you really want to do it then be my guest:

"We'll pee on USC"

Matt Barkley, you should be ashamed of yourself!:

"Matt Barkley reads Twilight"

What would a College Gameday held at a stadium playing against USC be without some good-natured Trojan/condom humor?:

"Trojans R Just Holloweeners"

This next one references Oregon’s Ed Dickson:

"Trojans can't handle our DICKson"

"Trojans have leaky defense"

Probably my personal favorite for funniest sign of the week:

"Warning: Trojans ineffective against the spread of-fense...and crabs!"

That’s all for the signs this week. Be sure to check back today or tomorrow for the poll to vote for your favorite sign of the week. I’ll put together a survey at the end of the year for people to select the best sign of the year. If you didn’t vote for last week’s sign yet, you can do so HERE.

Did anyone see when Oregon head coach Chip Kelly was walking through the crowd with the duck mascot head on? When he took it off, the guy next to him tried to kiss him. Oregon fans, if you know this guy, please let him know this wasn’t what Chad Ochocinco meant by “Kiss the Baby”:

Quality football coaches are great, but not THAT great...

Jenn Brown did make an appearance on College Gameday this week. She did a great segment that talks about how Matt Barkley handles crowd noise at away games (which I did a similar feature on). Click HERE to see her segment. Here are a few pictures of her enjoying her time at the stadium:

Pre-game on the field

On the field for pregame stretches

Lastly, here is the video of Lee Corso picking Oregon to beat USC. Pay special attention to the guy on his right as he gets onto the motorcycle…he is emphatically excited about throwing the shocker symbol.

I mentioned earlier this week that College Gameday was going to be held in Eugene, Oregon, and that

I mentioned earlier this week that College Gameday was going to be held in Eugene, Oregon, and that I would be holding my first official That Fan contest. Basically what I’m asking is for someone who is going to be in the crowd to get That Fan some pub on a sign. It doesn’t have to be on a sign all to its own, so you can do your sign making fun of USC (I’m assuming that there will be mostly Oregon fans there) and throw “That Fan” somewhere on the sign. Better yet, make it large and throw it on the back of the sign.

By the way, I will run this contest every week going forward so if your school is hosting Gameday in the future, keep checking the site for details.

Enough about the contest for now. Duck fans, if you are wondering where Gameday will be filmed, it will be at the Casanova Center parking lot that is parallel to Martin Luther King Blvd. and north of the Casanova Center. The show airs at 7 a.m. (PDT) and the gates are expected to open to spectators & That Fan contest winners at 5:30 a.m. More details can be found HERE.

Being that Oregon has been the topic at hand, I wanted to post a fantastic article talking about Oregon’s homefield advantage at Autzen Stadium. This only gives further credibility to the post I wrote several days back about the importance of making noise at football games. You can read the ESPN article HERE.

I’ve heard rumors that Oregon is telling everyone to wear black for Halloween, thus making the game an official black-out game. Might want to be careful, blackouts haven’t gone so well this year! Can any Oregon fans confirm?

A few final notes: I hope to see at least two Washington State flags like I have every week so far considering how close you are to Oregon. Jenn Brown is supposedly going to be on Gameday this week. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite signs from last week’s Gameday at BYU! Lastly, my “team of choice” (who will continue to remain nameless until they prove on the field that they deserve the publicity) has a game at 3:30pm ET, so I may not get the signs up until that night, but I’ll do my best to get them up as soon as Gameday is over!

Will Oregon Black-out USC?

Gameday has visited Eugene twice before:

9/29/07: #6 California beat #11 Oregon 31-24

11/3/07: #4 Oregon beat #6 Arizona State 35-24

Shortly thereafter I will have pictures up of the best signs throughout the broadcast so be sure to stop by the blog and check them out. Saturday is also Halloween so if there are any interesting costumes I will try and post pictures of those as well. If you will be at Gameday in Oregon, please send me pictures of signs and/or costumes and I will be sure to post them and give you credit. I will also be holding a contest for any fan that can give That Fan a shot-out on a sign this weekend. More details to come this week!

College Gameday was located in Provo Utah today, home of the big game between BYU and TCU. This gam

College Gameday was located in Provo Utah today, home of the big game between BYU and TCU. This game is the only matchup today pitting two teams against each other that are both ranked in the top 25 of the BCS standings, and it should be a good one. This game is actually going to be on the Versus network and not an ESPN affiliated network, and ESPN deserves a lot of credit for doing the show at Provo. Usually they are on site at one of the larger games that ESPN has each week in order to help promote, but today they went a different route.

First, I have to give a lot of love and credit to the BYU fans. I wasn’t sure how a Provo crowd would be, but they impressed me and might have had the best/rowdiest/loudest Gameday crowd all year. However, I will say that it was kind of odd seeing all those “I Love My Mom/Mommy/Dad/Daddy” signs. It seemed like I saw 10 of them…did anyone else find that odd or is it just me?

Three other Gameday observations: 1) I think I’ve seen at least two Washington State flags on Gameday every week of the season so far. 2) Unfortunately there was no Jenn Brown this week. 3) The celebrity guest picker this week was former BYU football coach (and stadium namesake) Lavelle Edwards.

On to the best signs of the day. At least they have something to brag about:

BYU may be #16 in football, but we are #1 in Accounting!

In case this guy’s mother is reading, he needs money:

Send $ Mom

Apparently TCU’s quarterback has a dirty little secret:

Andy Dalton loves The Bachelor

There were a lot of BCS complaints and calls for a college football playoff. Couldn’t get a great shot of this first one:

BCS Formula: 1 part C and 2 parts B.S.

A playoff, isn't it about time? (Yes, That Fan believes so)

Speaking of playoffs and getting rid of the BCS, there is actually a political group that has been formed to get rid of the BCS, Playoff PAC. Their website is http://PlayoffPAC.com and is shown in the signs below:

BCS: Bribery, Corruption, Scandal. Playoffpac.com

Beat the BCS. Save College Football. Playoffpac.com

This next sign deserves some pub. My team of choice is in the Big East, and I personally feel the Big East is a better top to bottom conference than the MWC, but the man makes a good argument:

<img class="size-full wp-image-219" title="MWCAutobid" src="http://thatfan.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/mwcautobid.jpg" alt="Consecutive Weeks Ranked in the Top 25: BYU-29, TCU-17, Big East-7.
Being that they were at BYU, there were obviously multiple references to ‘Cougars’ (and no, we don’t mean the mascot):

My Wife's A Cougar

Corso loves Cougars

Horned Frogs vs. Cougars (is that Madonna?)

Your MOM is a COUGAR!

Erin Andrews is a cougar (very nice)

At least one TCU fan showed up, and it doesn’t look like he is enjoying his sobriety:

WHERE'S THE BEER? TCU

Apparently BYU fans really, really enjoy Charlie Weis:

Florida State was a FLUKE, Charlie Weis ate our Defense!

Hey WEIS mix in a SALAD

I grew up a Ninja Turtle fan, and apparently so did this Harvey Unga supporter:

Cow-a-UNGA Dude

BYU tight end Dennis Pitta had his fan club at Gameday (including Mr. T):

I have a man crush on Pitta (not me, the sign guy!)

I Pitta The Fool (with Mr. T)

Of course the fans have to show love to Gameday and the crew:

Kirk! I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew (caffeine free)

My dream is to meet Lee Corso

I Love Gameday (ahhh...don't we all)

BYU blue sparklz like Kirk's eyes (there was a guy holding this sign)

Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham use to play for BYU, and it looks like they still have love for him…or do they (notice the hand placement)?

Whittingham Loves Utes! (with questionable grabbing)

BYU doing a little tweaking of the Boise State logo:

Donkey State

Quality sign here (and there’s one of those weird we love our mom signs I talked about earlier):

Your Mascot's a frog (and its purple)

I’m a HUGE Jim Rome fan (yes, I’m a clone) so I had to post this one:

Hey TCU, in the words of Jim Rome: "Goodnight NOW!!!"

I feel bad for this poor guys wife (wives?), but he gets a vote for That Fan of the week:

I left my wife in the delivery room to be here

And finally, what good is a College Gameday in Provo without some harmless Mormon-related humor?:

D-Day: The Invasion of Mormandy

Mormons eat frog eyes in their jello salad (kinda odd, but hey, whatever works)

Lastly, the Mormon opinion of Texas Christian University’s mascot:

Horny Toads aren't even CHRISTIAN!

That’s all for the signs but I do want to share a couple videos that I just had to post on YouTube. The first is of Lee Corso talking about Arkansas “shooting their wads”. Watch how Kirk asks him if he can say that on TV and then can’t stop laughing:

And last but not least, an amazing switcharoo by Lee Corso at the end…hilarious!

That’s all for this week. I’ll have a poll up soon for you to vote for your favorite sign (or you can just leave a comment now!) so be sure to check back! Enjoy your football weekend fellow fans!

Move over Erin Andrews, Jenn Brown is now (or will be by Monday) the darling of the sports blogosphere after her appearance on ESPN during the Red River Rivalry coverage on Saturday.

College Gameday was located in Dallas at The Cotton Bowl, home of today’s installment of the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma. The format was a little different today because the game started at noon ET, whereas Gameday is typically on scene wherever the big night game is. Because of this we only got about an hour of time outside the stadium with the rowdy fans. And I’ll say this again, if you missed the Jenn Brown interview with Colt McCoy, you missed out. I think you can check out the video on the Gameday website.

Without further delay, I give you the best signs shown on College Gameday today. Texas fans love giving Oklahoma a hard time about their lack of recent wins in bigtime football games…enter “Choklahoma”:

A.B.C. - Another Bashing of Chokloahoma

Another Choklahoma sign

This fan obviously believes in the “Lee Corso Curse”:

"Hey Corso Pick Texas So OU Wins!"

Even the cheerleaders were talking trash to Sam Bradford:

"Dear Sam: I hope we can still be friends after this!"

The Ambiguously Gay Duo…not really sure who the people are on the sign (maybe a fan that was there can fill us in) but I thought this had to at least make the list:

"The Ambiguously Gay Duo" (with two currently unidentified people)

I don’t even want to know how this fan knows this:

"Colt McCoy wears Sam Bradford's pajamas"

This sign isn’t humorous, but Jordan Shipley has had a heck of a year so far so he deserved some love:

"You can't spell Jordan Shipley without ESPN"

Hmm…thanks for this pointer, I’ll have to give that one a try (no, not really):

"Fried butter cures hangovers"

Looks like someone wasn’t impressed with the mustache Colt McCoy grew this year (the picture isn’t great but its basically a large picture of Colt with his mustache):

"FAIL"

And now for my personal favorite of the week, it looks like little Falcon, AKA Balloon Boy, decided to head to Dallas to get more TV exposure:

"I came from Colorado in my homemade balloon!"

Last but not least is a picture of Corso providing his pick for the week. He’s gotten the last three weeks wrong so let’s see if he can stop the losing streak this week:

Corso picks Texas over Oklahoma

That’s all the signs for this week. Hopefully the Gameday format will be back to normal next week so we can have two full hours of signs. I’ll have a post up in the next couple days that will let you vote if you feel any of these belong in the Gameday Sign Hall of Fame.

ESPN’s College Gameday will be in Dallas, Texas this week broadcasting from the Cotton Bowl, the site of the epic Texas vs. Oklahoma matchup AKA the Red River Rivalry. Shortly thereafter I will have pictures up of the best signs throughout the broadcast so be sure to stop by the blog and check them out. I will also be starting the College Gameday Sign Hall of Fame, which will be voted on by my faithful blog visitors.

Since the game isn’t really a home game for either team I can’t give you a picture of one particular school, so I apologize in advance for providing one with both. I bet you’ll forgive me.

As I said in my previous post, one of the best displays of people being That Fan is on ESPN’s

As I said in my previous post, one of the best displays of people being That Fan is on ESPN’s College Gameday broadcast on Saturday mornings. Each weekend I will start displaying creative signs and fans that are seen on the broadcast. I’ll continue this each weekend, including basketball season. I’ll keep everyone posted on which campus Gameday will be broadcasted on, hoping that one of you can plug the blog on a sign! I’m going to be testing various methods to get the best quality pictures, but feel free to help out and send pictures of your favorite signs (info@thatfan.com). Only a few from this week’s show, I’ll be sure to include more each week going forward.

A big theme this week was Tim Tebow related signs such as the one in the previous post:

"Hey Tebow, There's No Crying In Football!"

In other news, in case you haven’t heard, LSU fans somehow got Urban Meyer’s cell phone number and he has been getting calls from LSU fans all week. I wonder if he got this guy’s text?

"Urban, Did U Get My Text?"

Another Tebow/Crying sign:

"There's NO Crying in football!"

Yet again…I hope Tebow is using these as bulletin board material:

"Don't Cry This Time TEBOW!"

Lowe’s is getting a bit tired of Home Depot getting all this great advertising coverage on ESPN:

"Lowe's"

Apparently the Blues Brothers are LSU fans:

Sorry fans, that’s all the signs for this week. Oh yeah, Corso wore the Tiger Head. Have a great football Saturday!

Saturday mornings offer you the chance to view That Fan at his best…ESPN’s College Gameday broadcast. Some of the signs these fans hold up for the camera are absolutely hilarious. Gameday is in Baton Rouge today for the LSU/Florida game, and one of the classy LSU fans held this sign:

Poor Timmy Tebow
