Do you know that the British asparagus season has arrived? It’s officially 23 April to 21 June, but was a bit late setting off this year due to the chilly weather. It’s a relatively short span of time when you can enjoy this tasty morsel at its fresh local best, so you need to make the most of it.
Essex scores well regards local asparagus, with 3 major growers featured on the British asparagus website, http://www.british-asparagus.co.uk, Kent being the only county with more local growers. However, if you don’t live close to the big growers, and you live in rural Essex, the chances are you have farm shops nearby which grow and/or sell their own locally grown asparagus. It can be cheaper than buying from supermarkets, and it’s freshly picked so will be much tastier
I’m lucky to have two farm shops in my little bit of NE Essex; Mitchells http://www.mitchellsfarmshop.co.uk between Elmstead Market and Alresford, and Carpenters http://www.carpentersfarmshop.co.uk at Aingers Green near Great Bentley. Their asparagus is so fresh that it’s picked in the morning and can be sold out by lunchtime. Although experts may advise that it’s best eaten the day you buy it, you can stand it in a mug or jug with a little water and it will keep for a day or two. And will still be fresher than the supermarket stuff flown in from wherever.

You can even grow it yourself. And it grows wild in places. I spotted some in The Old Girl Next Door’s garden. She said it’s been there for years; just a couple of stalks; never been harvested. I couldn’t resist taking a photo though.

As well as being darned tasty asparagus is packed full of goodness including: the antioxidant vitamins A, C & E; vitamins B & K; folic acid (particularly good if you’re pregnant); potassium, thiamin and iron; soluble fibre. And it’s low in calories!
If you want recipes for asparagus there are loads on the internet. This Essex Girl usually just simmers it in shallow water for 5-10 minutes depending on the size of the spears, until it’s just tender. It’s great finger food. I put a dollop of mayonnaise (low fat – straight from the jar) onto the plate; hold the stem by the cut end and dip it into the mayo; usually eat the whole spear (not in one mouthful silly) unless the end is a bit woody. I did read one good tip on the internet. Before you cook it bend the asparagus spear near the cut end and it breaks naturally at the point where it becomes woody. Worked for me.
That makes a good lunch, which you may want to accompany with a slice of bread and butter. Last week I cut up some slim spears into lengths of approx 2.5ins/6cms and added to the top of a risotto for its last 5 minutes of cooking. Yummy.
Of course, what goes in must come out, and it is well known that asparagus can make your urine smell. It’s to do with a sulphur compound within its structure, but it only affects some people – including me.
It’s also on the top ten list of foods with aphrodisiac qualities. There is no scientific proof, but Nicholas Culpeper, the English 17th century herbalist, botanist, physician and astrologer, wrote in his famous Complete Herbal, that asparagus “stirreth up bodily lust in man or woman, whatever some have written to the contrary”. It seems rude to argue with Mr Culpeper.
So if you haven’t tried it already now is the time. You’ve only got just under 5 weeks left of fresh local asparagus – waiting to do some bodily stirring

On 15 June, the Twentieth Century Society is organising a walking tour to Frinton Park Estate in Frinton-on-Sea, Essex. Mentioned in Jonathan Meades‘ The Joy of Essex, Frinton Park Estate is a partially complete 200 acre speculative housing development which was begun in 1934 by Coast Property Investment Company, who planned to build a whole new small town. The tour looks at the collection of Modernist houses on the Estate including those by the lead masterplanner for the estate, Oliver Hill. This all-day event, led by John Barter, Rachel Baldwin and volunteers of the Frinton and Walton Heritage Trust, also looks at the best houses in the ‘select Edwardian Avenues’ on the Powell Cooper Estate, for which Frinton is also famous. There will also be interiors and other surprises on the day and Liz Bruce, the Trust’s Archivist, will open the Trust’s Railway Gatekeeper’s Cottage Museum to be viewed at the end of the visit.

It is Grannie’s birthday today and Mummy, Grannie and I went to a cookery demonstration by ‘Jane And Judy In The Kitchen’. The recipes were:

mini coconut cake

mini smoked haddock scotch eggs

sizzling chicken platter

minty bean and courgette dip with pitta crisps

warm quinoa salad with roasted vegetables

blackcurrant, lime and coconut cheesecake

My favourite was the scotch eggs, which was surprising as I don’t really like fishy things, but I could hardly taste the fish. It was the hardest thing to make though so I probably won’t make it…

I went to work at 14:00 and was working alone in the shop, which was a bit lonely. There were electricians installing CCTV and one of them got his arm stuck in the ceiling (haha). It was really quiet for the first hour – I only sold one ice cream – but it got a little busier at the end of school time.

This morning I woke up at 03:00 because my throat was really hurting and I thought I’d got something stuck in it. I had loads to drink and a couple of biscuits to see if I could push it down but it didn’t work. It hurt a bit over the day, but when I got home from work it got really bad, and after dinner, Mummy took me to A&E. The triage nurse said that I should drink a can of coke and then see a doctor about taking some muscle relaxant. She said that the wait for the doctor was two hours, but I didn’t get to see him for five hours… and then he said there wasn’t anything stuck, I’d probably just scratched my throat and it would heal by itself. But at least I could stop panicking that I was going to burst my food pipe!

The work of Ray Harryhausen, who sadly passed away last week, has influenced generations of filmmake

The work of Ray Harryhausen, who sadly passed away last week, has influenced generations of filmmakers.

He’s influenced everyone from Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson and James Cameron (who even did some early model work on Escape from New York) and special effects gurus such as the late Stan Winston and Dennis Muren.

Famously, when presenting Harryhausen with a special Academy Award in 1992, Tom Hanks told Harryhausen “Lots of people say Casablanca or Citizen Kane is the greatest film of all time… no way, it’s Jason and the Argonauts!”

He’s also had quite an effect on the next generation of talent, including up and coming animator, Rachel Barrass, 27, from Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

Rachel, whose picked and mixed her favourite dynamation creations to create the ultimate Harryhausen monster, said: “Watching Ray Harryhausen’s films at Christmas was almost a religion for me through growing up, and is something I continue to revel in.”

As a child Rachel was fascinated by the creatures and, like many of us, believed them to be real. Now older, and after having studied a degree in BA (Hons) Animation at South Essex College, Essex, she is enthralled by the movies Harryhausen had a hand in but now also appreciates his work from a technical point of view.

Rachel added: “The sheer detail that goes into his puppets, from the armatures to the skin is just so unique and once complete bring his creations vividly to life. His detailed imagination and skills flow through inanimate objects bringing them so vividly and memorably to life.”

For Rachel stop-motion animation is her medium of choice. She continued: “It’s a very personal thing, you create your subject and then you are in close contact with it for a long period of time, it is essentially your actor and you are controlling each and every movement and nuance, bringing your performance to it and for me that is the magic of Harryhausen. It’s almost as if you are god (or perhaps Zeus in Harryhausen’s last hurrah, Clash of the Titans) as you watch the movements made.”

CGI just doesn’t have the same draw for the Essex-based animator as she explained. “For me it just doesn’t have the same connectivity as your involvement as a creator is through machines and software so therefore I feel that you are more disengaged from the piece, or I guess you could see it as not being as involved with the ‘actors’.”

Rachel goes all Victor Frankenstein and creates the ultimate Harryhausen creation, a greatest bits if you will.

‘Hair’ of Medusa – Clash of the Titans

Rachel says: “My all-time favourite character, her eyes are just fantastic, and who wouldn’t want to be able to turn the odd person into stone. Perhaps Harryhausen’s finest hour for a single character and her final showdown is an epic, fitting end to his big screen career.”

Head of skeleton – Jason and the Argonauts

For those who don’t know Ray Harryhausen by name, then they will probably know him as ‘the fighting skeleton guy’, a scene that has been riffed in everything from The Mummy to Army of Darkness. Rachel says: “One of the most memorable fight scenes ever and certainly perhaps the most oft-shown and quoted this side of Kong as a standout in stop-motion.”

Eye of Cyclops – 7th Voyage of Sinbad/Golden Voyage of Sinbad

Rachel says: “The eye has it. The Cyclops feature in several Harryhausen epics and they made great noises.”

Torso of Talos – Jason and the Argonauts

Rachel says: “One of the ‘largest’ of his characters this was the original ‘iron man’. The noises he made as he walked still make me shudder. Great interaction with real actors as well that really made you believe he was that big.”

Arms of statue of Kali – The Golden Voyage of Sinbad

Rachel says: “A great battle scene with brilliant timing, echoed in the first Lara Croft movie.”

Tentacle of sea monster – It Came From Beneath the Sea

Rachel says: “People forget Harryhausen wasn’t just a master of the ancient monsters, he also did a good line in sea creatures as well, even though the budget and time constraints did only allow his creature to have six tentacles. When I talk to anyone about old film they always mention this one.”

Leg of dinosaur – Beast from 20,000 Fathoms/ One Million Years BC

Rachel says: “Reptilian beasts made several notable appearances under Harryhausen and he just went to show that he could turn his hand to any monster, mythical or not and still make them fresh, exciting and full of character. Of course it did help that they were often far more animated than some of the actors they appeared alongside.”

Wings of Pegasus – Clash of the Titans

Rachel says: “Most girls I knew wanted a My Little Pony when growing up, I wanted Pegasus. Who wouldn’t want a flying horse? One of the few heroic Harryhausen creations and everyone loves a hero…apart from perhaps that clockwork owl!”

And there we have it, perhaps not the prettiest looking creature around but certainly one of the most formidable. What parts from Harryhausen’s back catalogue would you have chosen? Thigh of Mighty Joe Young anyone?

The night before your Brother’s wedding, is a strange and nerve-wracking time. With all the bits I needed to do, already done and a very early start the next day, we thought the best thing to do, was to get a bite to eat and then get to bed.

Which is why Boon, my Mum, Step-Dad and I headed to The Cock Inn, Rochford. According to Mum, it has recently been refurbished and re-opened as a ‘Fayre and Square’ pub (which is a chain that definitely rings a bell with me, but I can’t remember where from).

It was nice enough inside, traditional decor, comfy chairs, nice art on the walls. We found a table and took a look through the menu… there was a huge selection of food on offer and all at very cheap prices.

You order at the bar, which I understand from Boon wasn’t an overly pleasant experience. He says that the bar staff were rather miserable and the service was poor (bearing in mind we’re used to the terrible Belgian service, this is really saying something).

Our food arrived rather quickly and our waitress was an absolute delight. Boon and I opted for the ‘two for £10′ meal deal and I couldn’t believe how big the portions were.

The XXL Burger was delicious, good quality and tasty meat and nicely cooked chips and onion rings. The bun and burger were both square, which Boon was very impressed with.

My New York Chicken, was rather tasty; the chicken wasn’t as fresh and juicy as it could have been, but the abundance of melted cheese and BBQ sauce made up for that! Chips and onion rings were great and the peas were perfectly cooked. I like a pea that is just cooked. I didn’t finish it all, because as you can see, there was loads of it.

Mum went for the Gammon Steak and jacket potato… which must have been tasty as she ate the lot!

We were intrigued by the ‘sharing’ desserts and decided to get both the Fun Fayre Combo and Cookie Dough Pizza to share between the four of us.

The Fun Fayre Combo consisted of eight profiteroles on skewers, two vanilla and strawberry and chocolate mini Victoria sponge type cakes, toffee popcorn and chocolate and strawberry sauces for dipping. This was an insane amount of sugar, but it tasted delicious, I’d really quite like one now – all to myself.

Cookie Dough Pizza (we went for the thin crust version) was make up of a cookie dough base and topped with; chocolate sauce, chocolate brownie pieces, marshmallow, maltesers and toffee popcorn. Absolutely bloody lovely, although sickly as hell, I don’t think I could manage more than a quarter at a time.

Although the atmosphere and bar service weren’t great, The Cock Inn is a great way to get a HUGE amount of food, for very little money. The sharing desserts are really good fun, if I was going back, I’d eat my dinner somewhere else and head there for the dessert.

You’ll find The Cock Inn at Hall Road, Rochford, SS4 1PD. I couldn’t find a website, but Fayre and Square have one here

I had my longest day at Poco today. Becca taught me to use the coffee machine. I made a double espresso to practice and then I kinda had to drink it and it gave me the coffee shakes for the rest of the day! I still don’t really know the difference between a latte, cappuccino and a flat white… but I made two cappuccinos for a couple and told them it was the first coffee I’d made and to let me know if it wasn’t quite right and they said it was good I accidently put peanut butter gelato in the cabinet under the lychee sortbetto sign and Charlotte served it to a woman who had an intolerance to ice cream… but she realised after one mouthful and said it was really nice and it was a shame she couldn’t have any more! I finished work early because Lance thought we were closing at 17:00 and we started cleaning up really early. We didn’t have many customers in the last hour anyway because it was raining.

Daddy and Barbara took me out for dinner at Shima. I had samosas and chicken tikka masala and some sides that we shared. Because I’m working pretty much every day now, I can’t go to the yoga class that we thought we’d like to do every week together

Since the National Lottery began in 1994, 40 millionaires have been created within the boundaries of the RM postcode. Now I’m not one to follow the money trail…which probably explains why I’ve never had much money, but perhaps its time to up stakes and move to Romford and start buying lottery tickets. I do wonder however what the Romfordarians will make of me? What is Essex etiquette in relationship to public drunkenness, fake tan and tattoos?

Its been a while since we posted here…. my life has been very busy with house remodelling, raising collies, job retraining, work, restoring old tractors and more…. yesterday we went to Gilmore’s Car Museum and saw a lot of cool old cars!  Some of it was absolutely astonishing!  If you ever get a chance to go do so for this car museum is absolutely one of the best. The highlight was the Model A Ford Museum that they built to look like a Ford Dealership during the Model A era!    But, here are some pics;

As I sit here writing this blog, I am staring out the window of my family home. A 400 year old farm

As I sit here writing this blog, I am staring out the window of my family home. A 400 year old farm house surrounded by fields. The decor of the house could be described using lots of different words that still wouldn’t get across what it actually looks and feels like. People have tried… estate agents, previous owners, my mother (the last designer). Over the last 12 months the inside of the farmhouse has taken a few turns that leave me heart broken to be surrounded by, simply because I know the beauty that was once there, along with the character and quirkiness. I love this place. Even though I now live in the futuristic area of Canary Wharf in the capital of Britain. I come home, when I want and when I can, mostly when I need. This weekend i have been here for a mere 24 hours, but before I head off I walk around the whole property (which has recently been nicknamed ‘The Ranch’ after a friend had no idea what the property contained). I walk out the back door, over the gravel courtyard to where my Wendy House once was it is now a chicken hut with a duck and peacock house opposite situated in a paddock and apple orchard, and a rose arbor running between the two. I watch my Jack Russell dog run under the gates and fences and through the long grass and into the horse yard. As I watch him I see him weave through the horses legs and notice the two tabby cats sitting on the wooden fences that divide horse from horse from horse. I am standing looking out on a field covered in daisies and buttercups closed in by small forests of trees and rabbits houses. Who could feel sad? This is where I grew up. I turn and look at the secret passages and bushes that hid all of my childhood games and secrets. The tree where my wooden swing would hang from, the garden that held so many birthdays and barbeques. This select part of nature is my dogs first and only home, and you can very clearly see that in his freedom, running and roaming every inch. I can tell you where my first rabbit was buried, and her babies too. Where I was taught to ride a bike by my grandfather, father and brother. Where I got stung by bees. Where I ran away to when I hated my mother, or siblings. I know this place, I know what it has to offer – especially forgetting the buildings situated on and around. Edit upon edits have been made since we first got here 17 years ago, some I hated, some were genius… I now know how a swimming pool is made (even if it has green tiles!). I don’t need to look at the pictures around the house to remember coming home from school in my striped summer uniform to find my mum in cut off jean shorts, wellies and a sequined vest hidden in the vegetable garden planting pumpkins, lavender, ginger and horseradishes.

As I make full circle of ‘The Ranch’ I come to think… “Maybe I should tell Dad when he is sad, anxious or worried – to take a deep breath and walk very slowly around the whole of the property taking in every sight”. It doesn’t matter that it’s a sunny day with a cold breeze, this place looks amazing in the snow, covered in rain and dried out from the never-present sun.

Thinking back, I have walked out of that back door and seen a deer in the orchard, a baby foul appear over night in the paddock, 6 puppy Jack Russell’s fall over in the snow and cuddled my family in the sun.

My childhood wasn’t perfect, the relationships within my family are from from it too – and sitting here now I have very much been taught that money doesn’t buy you happiness. But if anyone ever asks, I grew up surrounded by nature and fresh air…
