Much of LA becomes consumed with the buying and selling of features this week as 8000 gather at the American Film Market which kicks off W 11/4 and runs through W 11/11 concurrently with AFI Fest. Ground zero is the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel where 400 distributors are getting ready to rumble.  As the distributors are there to sell, the first half of AFM belongs mostly to the buyers.  You need a full market badge ($895) for access to the upper floors during this time, but its free to linger to the lobby and lounge by the pool putting together target lists which many do in prep for half badge face time ($345) starting Su 11/8.  Day badges $275.  To see the market in action check out these videos from Film Specific’s Stacey Parks, UpsideDownTV’s Johnny Neurotic and Variety’s Michael Jones.

Just another run of the mill competition based reality show, The Superstars pairs pro athletes with celebrities from different areas (models, dancers, singes, etc.) Each week, the couples compete in two challenges (three in this week’s episode). The top teams are safe and the lowest teams are sent to the obstacle course for an elimination challenge. The oddest thing is that there is always a tie break between the middle ranked teams to determine which team will be in the elimination challenge, regardless of whether or not the two teams are tied. (Also odd is that should there be a technical tie, the team that scored more in the second challenge is ranked higher which could be the difference between being a top tier team and a middle tier team.)

The challenges vary from canoeing to swimming to jet skiing to rock climbing to archery…The only sport that they did that directly involved the sport of one of the professional athletes was basketball (and surprisingly, it didn’t help Lisa Leslie much). Some of the challenges, such as bowling, level the playing field as professional athlete or not, you might not be a good bowler. Others, like the bike race or the run, rely heavily on the fitness of the participants, giving some players advantages over others.

The teams are (in the final order):

1) Kristi Leskinen, a freestyle skier, and Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovisky, from Dancing with the Stars-Kristi and Maks have been dominating the competition with first or second place wins in essentially every event. They easily win the show, finishing with the fastest time of any team in the obstacle course.

2) Bode Miller, ski racer, and Paige Hemmis, from Extreme Makeover- Bode and Paige are the scheming, competitive type and their strategy has taken them to the finals (though, this is part luck since in one episode they decided to save their strength in the first event only to discover that the second event was bowling–other times their strategy really is what did it).

3) Lisa Leslie, three-time WNBA MVP and a four-time Olympic gold medal winner, and David Charvet, a singer/actor- Lisa and David have been in the elimination round virtually every week and yet somehow they are still in the competition. Watching Leslie, you would be surprised to know that she is a pro athlete, much less a basketball player, because she has been clumsy and uncoordinated through most of the show (I think this is in part to her impossible long limbs, making a lot of the events and apparatuses awkward for her).

4) Brandi Chastain, soccer player, and Julio Iglesias Junior, singer- Julio is surprisingly fast and blazed through much of the competition. Brandi (my favorite because I love watching the women’s soccer team) sustained an injury that finally caught up with her.

5) Jeff Kent, baseball player, and Ali Landry, model- Jeff and Ali were also eliminated and brought back because of a withdrawal but they were eliminated that episode. They were a very supportive couple.

6) Terrell Owens, football player, and Joanna Krupa, model-Terrell Owens and Joanna Krupa were originally eliminated in the first week (they did not get along at all, mainly because Joanna went crazy because she expected more of him–chill, it’s just a competition) but were brought back due to another team withdrawing. They got along better the second time around. (Due to T.O.’s prior commitments, they had to withdraw anyway.)

7) Robery Horry, basketball, and Estella Warren, model and synchronized swimmer

Dan Cortese, actor (originally paired with Leslie but withdrew due to injury)

9) Jennifer Capriati, tennis player (originally paired with Charvet but withdrew due to injury)

In all honesty, there isn’t much to this show. A lot of the competitions make them all look silly and only a few are big enough names that you really care about them being on the show at all. There’s no real host to the show, just a guy who tells them the competition rules, a girl who interviews them, and an announcer we only hear in voiceover. I like it simply because of it’s category (reality tv competition) and because in the summer there isn’t that much else to watch.

When it comes to celeb with hottest pair of lips in town, all hands go up in affirmation for sexy-naughty-bitchy Angie [Angelina Jolie], as she surpasses em all…

OK, there were more teams but nobody else interesting. Again, the show completely sucks, but you can’t sneeze at the HOT POA’s they’ve got…………………

Last night, hopefully out of extreme boredom, I tuned in to ABC’s new summer reality show Superstar. I have a few issues. First and most importantly (or perhaps my only issue), what exactly defines a so-called superstar? Let’s discuss the cast of characters that ABC as offered us.

• Jennifer Capriati…As a fan of tennis, I knew who she was. I never really liked her because she had a terrible habit of choking when the going got tough, and of course occasionally beating the players that I liked. Which she did a few times last night. As good as she was in early ’90s (that’s right, early ’90s) she isn’t what I’d call a superstar tennis player.
• David Charvet…The Baywatch hunk. Not that I recognized him, per se. But I did recognize his name.
• Brandi Chastain…She’s the one who ripped off her shirt after the 1999 Women’s World Cup win. But non soccer fans like me would be hard pressed to tell you anything else.
• Maksim Chmerkovskiy…America is obsessed with Dancing with the Stars, I get that. I’m not. But when I do happen to watch, Maksim is always one of my favorites.
• Dan Cortese…I really don’t know much about him and Wikipedia just lists a bunch of bit parts and things.
• Paige Hemmis…I don’t watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition but I hear tell that she’s a designer on it.
• Robert Horry…He seems to have been quite a good basketball player. I don’t watch basketball at all. So he was either very good or very lucky to be on very good teams. Hard to tell for a blissfully ignorant person like me. And he’s got songs named after him!
• Julio Iglesias, Jr…Oh, I bet that he’s the son of Julio Iglesias! And of course the much more famous Enrique’s brother. Though what I know him most from is that stupid Gone Country show, which he won, to his credit, I think.
• Jeff Kent…I remember him playing for the San Francisco Giants when I used to watch the Atlanta Braves. He holds quite a few records and retired last year.
• Joanna Krupa…ABC claims that she’s a supermodel but it seems that most of her modeling work involves skimpy swimsuits and men’s magazines. Playboy, FHM, Maxim…you name it, she’s done it. But of course that was all discovered just now at Wikipedia, for me anyway. Plus, she treated Terell Owens like crap last night.
• Ali Landry…Based on my mere seconds ago search of her on Wikipedia, I still have no idea who she is. Apparently an actress and Miss USA winner in 1996.
• Kristi Leskinen…Wikipedia has just informed me that Kristi has been quite successful in freestyle skiing at the Winter X Games. So we’ll have to go with that.
• Lisa Leslie…As far as I know, she was basically one of the founding members of the WNBA. And there is nothing wrong with that.
• Bode Miller…I love the Winter Olympics so I knew that he was a gold medal skiier with a generally loose attitude and occasional bad temper. I like him.
• Terrell Owens…I don’t think I’d watch football if somebody paid me but even I know that he’s known just as much for his bad attitude as his amazing abilities. Bad luck being paired with Krupa, though.
• Estella Warren…Wikipedia informs me that she was a Olympic synchronized swimmer turned model (in more common ways than Joanna Krupa) and now seems to be working her way through guest starring roles.

I want to be clear that I have nothing at all against any of the people on this show. I am sure that they are very accomplished in their own areas. I am just not sure that “superstar” is the right word to describe them. “Celebrity” maybe. “Superstars” would be Brangelina, Johnny Depp, Miley Cyrus even. But then again, those people are far to busy and, I’m sorry, successful to lower themselves to silly reality shows like this.

Will I watch again next week? If I’m bored enough.

This is a bruised heart love story. The main characters have to go through so much to be together plus it may not even be real. We aren’t talking about teenagers these people are middle aged and lead sad sack lives filled with pain and nothing to look forward to they have lived life and been crushed by it then they find each other. 

This film is a welcome new voice in the world of cinema I felt I was seeing something new and original that was disguised as a run of the mill vegas Drama/thriller. The film is more of a Dark comedy then anything. The way you think certain scenes will end never do the filmmakers go for the surprise and it’s even more startling then you can imagine.

The Cast are all excellent William H. Macy uses his hangdog Midwestern looks to it’s full effect and reveals a sweet soul who has gotten a raw deal in life and has earned some good luck for once. Maria Bello is both good as a femme fatale and a innocent woman who has lived a hard life. Alec Baldwin is phenomenal this really was his comeback role showing he still has the goods. So good he got nominated for Best Supporting Actor      

This film is rated NC-17 for the sex scenes where as the violence to me is more explicit and disturbing then the love scenes.

The story follows a gambler who is in debt to a casino who they send to sit next to big winners as his bad luck seems to pass onto them when they are gambling allowing the house to always win. When he falls in love and is happy his good luck spreads and the casino can not have that happen. You even notice it in his clothes his suits fit better ad seem more tailored and as his luck improves so does the brightness around him.

The film shows the other side of Las Vegas the seedy underground more then the glitz and glamour plus it shows the old brutal Las Vegas where a man kept his word and people talked to each other versus the new computerized impersonal Las Vegas. Where there are no second chances  

 Definitely a good addition to your film library

Planet of the Apes (2001) Captain Leo Davidson, for reasons too stupid to go into, finds himself crash landing through a bizarre space storm on to a planet where apes are the dominant species and fond of quoting lines from the 1967 movie Planet of the Apes. 5/10 Entirely non-sensical science-fiction action movie that remains curiously bland despite some of the greatest make-up ever seen and the presence of director Tim Burton. In fact, my brother hit the nail on the head when he commented that "this didn’t feel like a Tim Burton film." That said, we can enjoy apes doing all sorts of fun things such as removing their wigs and false teeth (my favourite), cheating at cards, getting ready for foreplay, playing in a musical street quartet and a number of other wonderfully mundane things. In fact, the mundane normality of the ape existence is probably the best thing about the entire movie. Burton easily manages to convince us that this is a living, breathing city of apes, many of whom just go about their day to day life without affecting the plot. This movie contains extreme violence, mild gore. Classified 12 by BBFC. Suitable only for persons of 12 years and over.
