…this is taking it a little far. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still love me some of all of the GG gals, (and our love for them is well-chronicled here on Colt Monday) but you’ve got to give some extra props to Betty White for getting out there and still being funny. She was the best part of that awful Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds movie The Proposal and she popped up on 30 Rock this week. And we’re all familiar with her work as Rose on the Golden Girls (unless your not, and then we can’t be friends; sorry, loser!). But while I consider Golden Girls to to be one of the best TV shows of all time, somebody else has trumped me with their crazy-ass fandom for the show. You ready to see the scariest/most awesome tattoo ever?

Damn, dude. You’ve got Bea Arthur on your body, forever.

Are you kidding me? I sure hope Ebay tells the Academy where to stick it so to speak. The Acadamey can beg and plead all they want. If they didn’t want Estelle Getty to have the award, they shouldn’t have given to her. Ebay should let whoever is trying to sell the award , to sell it. The Academy’s rules have absolutely nothing to do with Ebay. If the Academy is that concerned about it, they should offer to buy it from the owner either behind the scenes or on Ebay. What if Estelle Getty’s children or grandchildren are trying to sell it because they need the money? Does the award default back to the Academy after the actress’s death? I don’t think so. Please Ebay, tell the Academy where they can shove it.

Estelle Getty Emmy For Sale On eBay: “

Officials at The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences are working to convince eBay bosses to yank an auction offering the late Estelle Getty’s 1988 Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Emmy Award to the highest bidder, Variety has learned.

The auction violates TV Academy rules, the Emmy group claims.

“It’s a situation in which the award is not meant to be monetized,” says John Leverence, Senior VP of Awards for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “The value of the award is in the recognition by your peers. That intangible value is priceless; to monetize the award by selling it . . . is just not something the academy wants to see happen.”

Leverence said the academy was contacting eBay officials, “to let them know the official rules, at which point we’re sure [the auction] will be taken down. It’s pretty much in black-and-white — there’s no wiggle room.”

Getty earned the prize for her siganature role as wisecracking Italian Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls, which ran on NBC between 1985 and 1992. The auction, scheduled to end Wednesday, was posted by an LA art dealer, with an initial asking price is $15,000. No bids had been made as of Monday afternoon.

Estelle Getty died in July 2008, at the age of 84. She is survived by two sons.

If you’re having trouble coming up with the perfect gift for, well, anyone, you should try your luck in bidding for Estelle Getty’s Emmy!

That’s right, for a starting bid of $15,000, you can get in on this hot Emmy action and own Estelle’s award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying (duh!) Sophia Petrillo from 1987 to 1988 on The Golden Girls!

It’s a specific present, sure, but a memorable one.

The cast of The Golden Girls keep shining in life and death.

Betty White has just been voted by the cast of 30 Rock as the celebrity actor they’d most like to guest star on their show. Cute. Hollywood has its own pension plan for sweethearts of the grey set. Good to see!

Estelle Getty’s Emmy is on E-bay with an asking price of $15,000. That’s all kindsa wrong. The Emmys governing body, who didn’t nominate Anna Paquin for an Emmy this year for True Blood, are trying to get Estelle’s Emmy off E-Bay right this nanosecond.

Bee Arthur got the biggest round of applause, when Justin Timberlake called out her name at the 2009 Emmys. So she should have!

Rue Callahan wowed alongwith Australian sweetheart, Olivia Newton John, in the drama series Sordid Lives about a bunch of small town, midwest sisters, who put the fun back into dysfunction in their family.

These Golden Girls were and are much loved!

The statuette is being offered by a seller of fine art, with an initial asking price of $15,000. As of this morning (Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2009), there were no bids.

Academy policy is that if honorees don’t want the statue anymore it must be returned. Getty died last year.

Today is my mom’s birthday, so, in celebration, I offer to you ten of my favorite TV moms. This turned out to be way harder than I expected as more and more shows popped into my head. Since this is obviously incomplete, feel free to leave your favorite TV moms in the comments.

(This is in alphabetical order by character’s first name, so I don’t have a nervous breakdown over various shades of meaning made possible by other orders. Thanks for passing along anxiety, Mommy! At least I come by it honestly.)

Ann Romano – One Day at a Time

One Day at a Time begins with a recently divorced Ann remaking her life with her two teenage daughters. Through the advances of her lawyer, her building’s super, and a string of other men, Ann explores the lines between independence, sexuality, and how she might set an example for her daughters. (Plus the show has one of my favorite theme songs ever.)

Clair Huxtable – The Cosby Show

If you have turned on a TV in the last twenty years, you would already know that this is one of the best brief moments to air. Aside from Clair’s general badassery, it’s one of the greatest descriptions of relationship give-and-take with regard to feminism. You would think Elvin would learn to keep his mouth shut because everyone knows Clair Huxtable wins every time.

Emily Gilmore/Lorelai Gilmore – Gilmore Girls

I guess this is eleven of my favorite TV moms because Gilmore Girls is definitely a twofer. While Lorelai is supposed to be the favorite, I definitely harbor the desire to instill fear into the hearts of those around me as Emily does. American TV isn’t particularly fond of discussing class, but Gilmore Girls makes one of the more honest attempts.

Ida Morgenstern – Rhoda

I’m not entirely sure of when I found my love of Jewish mother stereotypes, but I’m sure Ida Morgenstern helped me find my way. Religious background aside, I know I have a kindred spirit in anyone who vacuums away stress, though I definitely draw a line at covering my furniture in plastic.

Lois Griffin – Family Guy

Yes, it’s blasphemy to pick Family Guy over The Simpsons, but Lois has a spark that Marge will never have. From folk singer to pill-popping model to sex ed teacher, Lois stands on her own and isn’t afraid of when that means standing beside her less-than-ideal husband. And, if you try to call her on it, as Gloria Ironbox once did, she will pummel you.

Nancy Botwin – Weeds

Perhaps Nancy Botwin doesn’t exactly mother in the traditional sense. After her husband’s death, Nancy begins dealing pot to support her sons and soon finds herself tumbling out of suburbia and into the darker world of international drug trade. One of the shows running themes is that she gets exactly what she wants – even if she doesn’t deserve it – because of her beauty. I can’t help but wonder how she acted as a stay-at-home mom prior to her husband’s death.

Nora Walker – Brothers and Sisters

I cannot wait for the fall TV season to start if only because I miss my Sunday nights with Nora Walker. She might be a little overbearing, a little more meddling than I could actually take in real life, but I still covet the house and family she maintains for an hour every week. One of the best things about Nora is that the show allows her (and Sally Field) to be older without being dowdy. She’s navigating the space between gender, generations, and her high expectations for herself and her loved ones.

Roseanne Conner – Roseanne

Okay, so maybe the last season of Roseanne was completely awful, but the final episode is one of the best. One of the best things about Roseanne is that viewers actually see her at her blue-collar jobs, struggling with her husband to maintain their family. The last episode takes into account how a woman might deal with work and a family and still care for herself. (How much the universe loves me: on more than one occasion I have been rewarded during an all-nighter with this episode airing on Nick at Nite.)

Sophia Petrillo – The Golden Girls

As much as I want to be Emily Gilmore, I want to be Sophia even more. Sharp, sarcastic, and tiny, Sophia tells it like it is. Her daughter, Dorothy, claims Sophia’s lack of filter is due to a stroke, but I’m inclined to believe that she’s always been that way. As with the rest of her housemates, Sophia grapples with sexuality, aging, and how to be a mother to her grown children.

Thelma Harper – Mama’s Family

Thelma is one of the sassiest ladies to ever grace the television screen. We’ve talked here about how the South doesn’t get much play time on TV; seeing this, how could anyone not want more Mama? Thelma’s character comes to us in later age when she should be spending time with her church ladies, but instead, more frequently, deals with her grown son and flighty daughter-in-law. I wouldn’t mind growing up to be Mama, so long as I don’t have to have Naomi living in my basement.

much like the residences within the luxurious walls, you won’t see this ad anywhere except at Thomas Circle. The dichotomous subtext above is so terribly uncomfortable; and yet like every great story it is the “surprising yet inevitable” ending for a generation of wealthy retirees. Luxury senior living, because this is what you’ve been saving up for — thanks 401(k); 1 bedroom apartment, because even with all that success there’s no need for a guest room; pets welcome; because Fido is the only friend left.
by Beal Show: The Golden Girls Character: Sophia Patrillo Actor: Estelle Getty Basically: Sophia is

by Beal

Show: The Golden Girls

Character: Sophia Patrillo

Actor: Estelle Getty

Basically: Sophia is the sharp-tongued octogenarian of the group. Fresh out of the home (Shady Pines) she lives with her daughter Dorothy, and her two roommates Blanche and Rose. Her speech has no filter, a side effect of a previously suffered stroke and an acerbic wit. She’s a tough little Sicilian who has close ties with the mob, and can cast a curse on unsuspecting victims who have crossed her. She speaks of vendettas and hidden bodies like they’re recipes for sauce, which are her real secrets. She quick to give advice to the other “girls” because despite their senior status, she’s still twice as wise (which isn’t hard when we’re talking about Rose and Blanche). She’s tiny, with curly white hair and wouldn’t be caught dead without her wicker/bamboo purse clutched tightly, handles nestled comfortably in the crevice of her inner elbow. Getty was nominated seven times and won one Emmy for her portrayal of Sophia Petrillo.

Amore: Few characters on television strike the balance between bitingly sarcastic and sweet old lady like Sophia. She really is one in a million. Her constant lesson sharing, beginning with my favorite Sophia-ism “Picture it. . .Sicily. . .1923. . .” Or how about how she’s always onto some make money quick scheme? A quick mention of “Shady Pines, Ma” though, and she settles herself down and begins to behave. And although she constantly insults and ridicules Blanche and Rose she loves them as if they were her own daughters and hands out advice (and hard candies) like its, well, hard candies. And hardly an episode goes by where she and “Pussycat” don’t share a heartwarming mother/daughter moment that reminds us all, that behind that old, bitter and rude exterior is just a Pope-loving, funny woman with a heart of gold.

Favorite Moments: Seriously, Sophia has the best lines in the show. Half of it is her delivery, but either way, she’s the kind of character that only has to open her mouth in order to make me laugh. For as much TV as I watch, I honestly don’t laugh out loud as frequently as one might expect, Sophia though, is one of those characters that elicits the kind of laughter that makes television completely worth watching. Let’s see, anytime Dorothy’s ex-husband Stan Zbornak enters the scene and Sophia is compelled to immediately insult him.(Stan: Hi, Sophia. You’re looking younger everyday. Sophia: Hi Stan, and that’s a beautiful toupee you’re wearing. Great, now we’re both liars.) How about the episode where Rose is dating the midget doctor and Blanche, usually one to keep contained keeps slipping up mention things like shrimp and what not upon his surprise arrival at their door. When Sophia enters, she is nothing but polite, until he leaves, at which point she needs reassuring that she hasn’t, in fact, had another stroke. Or when Sophia believes she’s had a heart attack, but it is only sad until the paramedics ask her what she’s had to eat that day, and it’s enough food to feed an army of stoners. I also love any episode when “Picture it” leads to a flashback to the Petrillo’s WWII era Brooklyn apartment and Sophia plays herself, but without the white wig and glasses on a chain while Dorothy is played by a Celine Dion look-alike. The point is, it’s never what Sophia does, but what she says that really cracks my shit up, and for that, we love her.

I thought it would be good to have a post about my favorite TV Shows, which I have loved for years n

I thought it would be good to have a post about my favorite TV Shows, which I have loved for years now and still watch over and over again. Yes they still make me happy and make me smile (and probably the odd episode makes me cry). There is not many shows that I really love and watch over and over. I can only think of 4 which fit into this category.

Sex and the City

It has been my ultimate favorite for so long now, I used to watch it every night as it was on paramount comedy over and over. From series 1 to 6 and when it was done, it used to start over again. With the addition of the movie and then the second movie which is due to start filming soon, this is just an obsession of mine that will never get old and go away. I appreciate SATC so much, I adore Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda a lot. I see different parts of each of them in myself and I am sure most other women do too. It it obviously is about one of my favorite things . . . sex, haha. But the friendships that is in the movie are just so fantastic as well I love it. I hope the friends I have now are my Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda . . . as believe it or not they are quite similar to them and myself with Carrie, I even have my own version of Mr Big. Yes it is all going to be heartache in that department.

The Golden Girls

“Thank you for being a friend” is the theme song to this show and its just such a nice theme song to have. I think when everyone reaches the stage of there lives which the Golden Girls are in, they will be saying thank you for being a friend to the people who are still around them, as I am assuming that it will more than likely be your friends. A group of retired women living together, who would really have thought it would have been a massive hit? But it really was in the 80’s. Yes I am too young to know it from the first time around, but I love it a lot and used to watch it when ever it was on and even set it to record. I adore how funny it is, and possibly SATC girls when they are older?

Friends

The ultimate favorite of the 90’s and it will always be one of my favorites. I still watch it when ever it is on to this day (which is like every day, on some channel, haha). I just do not find myself getting bored of “Friends” like ever. Its still funny no matter how many times you have seen the one where . . . I grew up with the friends guys and it was very sad when they decided to call it a day and the series was over. I think it could have still lasted a few more seasons. I wouldn’t say no to a movie version even if it does not sound the best idea in the world, but who cares it would still be amazing its friends.

Will & Grace

A guy gay and a straight girl who pretty much go on like a married couple, throw in another gay guy who is very camp and a woman with a high pitched squeaky voice and your onto a winner! Karen and Jack are probably the real stars of Will and Grace. They are so hilarious together and just make you laugh so much with the stupid things they say and do throughout the series. They defiantly provide my favorite moments in the show. The guest appearances on this were fantastic as well, Michael Douglas episode is my all time favorite.

“I don’t know, I just don’t really care,” I told Amanda when she called me to tell me Michael Jackso

“I don’t know, I just don’t really care,” I told Amanda when she called me to tell me Michael Jackson died. This was the exact same reaction I had but a few hours prior upon hearing Farrah Fawcett died. Of course it’s sad when people die, but I guess I’m just missing the investment.

“That’s surprising,” she said, “given your love of ‘80s pop.”

“I mean, I like his music, but I don’t particularly care for him one way or another.”

The Michael Jackson I really love is actually not of the Thriller variety, but of the Jackson 5 variety. An extra special glimpse into my life: “I Want You Back” is one of my top five turn up loudly and dance around the apartment like a moron songs.

But the Michael Jackson of Jackson 5 fame has been gone for quite some time. (So has the Michael Jackson of Thriller fame for that matter.)

What continues to baffle me is the very public mourning surrounding celebrity death. I mean, on some kind of intellectual level, I get it. If we follow celebrities’ lives, their every step, every sip of coffee, to the point where we can probably describe their likes and dislikes better than that of our coworkers, then there would be an equal sense of knowing in grief.

There is also, of course, idolization on a role model level, in this case a man with a tremendously successful music career. Successful enough to obtain status as the king of pop. That’s some pretty serious stuff. But what’s the statute of limitations on that? My Facebook feed is filled with a whole bunch of tragic and devastated. Really? I’d like to think I’d reserve words like devastated for my grandmother, but there’s also a chance that I’m a cold-hearted, ultra-distanced bitch.

“I’ll see how I feel when Dar dies,” I told Amanda.

“Oh, when Manson dies, I’m calling out for a week.”

Because this is how my world works, I ran through a similar conversation with Matt.

“I was sad when Robert Altman died because it meant there would be no more movies by him,” he said, “but I wasn’t in mourning.”

When Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty died, I did the same thing for both of them: I got a pint of cheesecake ice cream, watched a few episodes of Golden Girls and celebrate the entertainment they had brought to my life. No tears, no real grief. Just some good laughs, as Golden Girls episodes always bring, an appreciative nod to that part of my life, and then that was that.

Am I wrong in this? (It’s okay if I am. And, if I am, I would like to know the other side of the story. Why so much pain for someone you don’t actually know?)

A story: travel back with me to Mrs. Parker’s second grade class, circa the 1990-1991 school year, wherein she showed us a video – I have no idea what – and said, “Michael Jackson’s in this” in order to garner our attention. We watched as a boy and a girl rode on a carousel. Blank-faced, we waited. “There he is,” she said when we didn’t react, pointing to the screen.

“Michael Jackson is white,” we said. “That boy is black,” which led to a substantially awkward discussion.

At no other point could I possibly have learned a more potent lesson in not only race, but that celebrity is an in-the-moment public persona that, try as we may, we don’t ever get to crack.

I ♥ the Golden Girls!

I have been and will be a fan for life of those women. Now that Sophia and Dorothy have left us we must treasure the two remaining Golden Girls with all of our hearts!

Betty White = The Cat’s Meow

I love the fact that Rue McClanahan and Betty White are still active, and fiesty as ever! Rue McClanahan is still making cracking jokes and drawing in crowds with her stand-up comedy and Betty White is working the the silver screen. Betty White stars in the flick The Proposal with the delicious Ryan Renyolds and Sandra (why are we watching her still?) Bullock. I don’t have to watch even 5 minutes of that movie to know that the little comic relief was brought by Betty. Okay I am not being completely honest with you all. I would watch a bootleg version of the film in its entirety just to see how many times Ryan Reynolds was paid to take his shirt off. I’m not hatin’ I’m just sayin’ . That man has got a body that Leonardo da Vinci might have sculpted for free!

I don’t watch Late Night with Jimmy Fallon every night and when I do happen to catch it I have to admit it is to hear the amazing house band The Roots (who are undoubtedly my favorite hip-hop group ever!) I happened to catch on Hulu (the day after it aired) Betty White’s appearance on the show. She is in her 80’s and the sharpest pencil in the box by far. When she accepted Jimmy’s challenge to a game of beer pong is when I knew this women possessed something extra special.

For all those Golden Girl fans out there enjoy this clip of our girl Rose in action. I think she felt a bit sorry for Jimmy so she let him win. I’m sure with the cameras off she could drink any of us under the table.

So I am currently sitting watching the Tony Awards, and yes I do realise that this is a movie blog.

So I am currently sitting watching the Tony Awards, and yes I do realise that this is a movie blog. But so many actors and even shows/plays cross over to the movie genre. I attended the Tony Awards in 2008 and cannot believe that a year has now gone by since I was sitting in the audience myself.

The tribute to the performers who died in the last year has just been on, pictures of the actors who were nominated or won Tony Awards, accompanied by people singing “What I Did For Love” from “A Chorus Line” really broke my heart. I adore that song and some really big named actors have died in the past year. The three that really stick in my head are Paul Newman, Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty. While all of the people were applauded, I could hear a lot of cheers for Bea, she really was loved by the Broadway crowd.

I missed the start of the show which I was so disappointed about! Like the first 10 minutes, so basically the opening number. I turned it on in time to see Liza Minnelli on the stage, which made me smile. I was not too impressed with Shrek in musical form, I don’t no it just did not make me want to go and see it right now. I was however very, very happy when Angela Lansbury won yet another Tony Award. She really is just Mrs. Tony !!! I would not want to be nominated against her, haha.

Frank Langella has just been on presenting and very much amused me, kinda complaning in jest that he was not nominated for the play that he was in, and that award seasons bring out the best in him. He also joked about having an Oscar speech in his pocket still. Yes I am easily amused but he really was fantastic in Frost/Nixon.

Susan Sarandon was also on earlier and looking very good may I add. I cannot believe that this women is in her 60s now and still looking so fantastic, she is in such great shape. She has such a distinctive voice which I also love. Yes I do realise that I have just gone all fangirlish for Susan.

Billy Elliott perfromance was just fantastic, Elton John was on the stage to introduce it too which made it even better in my opinion. It was nice to see a different part of it, and not “Electricity” which was always on UK shows when it first hit the West End. Although my favorite song from this show is “Deep into the Ground”. Very good dancing in this part, it has to win best musical!!!

I actually loved the Legally Blonde performance, it just looks like it would be a really fun show. Just like the movie is really fun too. Harvey Fierstein then came on to present and OMG his voice is just so incredible. He has won 4 tony awards, but I knew him first in Mrs Doubtfire, love it.

Nice to see Angela Lansbury back on the stage to present the life time achievement award good times. I think she is just fabulous, still going strong at her age is incredible. OMG YAY a clip from La Cage aux Folles . . . “I Am What I Am . . . “ with George Hearn talking YAY I totally love him. Ok so the La Cage aux Folles now makes sense as it was for the writer or creator of that show. Whos name I cannot remember.

Anne Hathaway is there too, as she is going to be in Twelfth Night. She was introducing the performance from “Hair”. Hmmm I am not really too sure about Hair either, its not something I would rush out to see. Although it was amusing to see the cast jumping around the audience on some A List celebrities, haha.

Kristin Chenowith is a favorite with the Tony’s. She presented the best musical revival which went to Hair. I enjoyed the clip of Stockard Channing. What would a Tony Awards be without David Hyde Pierce ?!?!?! who was introduced by coming out for the second time tonight, hahahahaha.

YAY Billy Elliott won best actor(s) for all three of the Billy’s. Fantastic! Its Tony history as well, for 3 actors to be winning the Tony Award. Awwww they were all so cute as well, so shocked and overwhelmed and one of them was almost crying. They really had no idea what to say.

Liza is also Mrs.Tony she is presenting the best musical award for the second year in a row . . . possibly even more times than that ?!?! I am guessing anyway. YAY of course Billy Elliott just had to win it, its incredible and from my neck of the woods in the North East England. LOVE IT LOVE IT. Geordie accents all round, haha. The kids just totally loved it.

Saw the news about Bea Arthur’s demise a couple of days back! Will surely miss her and Estelle Getty who passed away last year. I am a big fan of The Golden Girls sitcom which revolves around 3 aged woman and 1 of their mother. It is so funny. My first year in the US (with no college or job) were totally entertained by these girls. When people were going ga-ga over Friends, I was totally hooked on to Golden Girls Marathons and Reruns Will miss you Bea and Estelle. I am sure you will still be in all our lives via Dorothy and Sophia. RIP!

So last week was chock full of goodness … but alas, life isn’t conducive to blogging rig

So last week was chock full of goodness … but alas, life isn’t conducive to blogging right now. Didn’t get a chance to blog a recap of the week but you can’t spell blog without the letter b and that letter is a halfway-homonym to Bea … Bea Arthur. Long story short, I had to post a blog for Bea.

Brief makeup for lost time:

I didn’t post on April 20 so …

Belated Happy Birthday to the freshest: Edie Sedgwick

… who shares quite a bit with the recreation celebrated on the same day, but not much more than a birthday — and an undeniable charisma — with the extremist mind behind Mein Kampf

Belated welcome to the Taurean time of year, and those whose birthdays fall within that most brilliant season — we’re kind of a big deal.

Belated “Two thumbs fresh” kudos to Lily Allen for a brilliant show at Roseland …

though it’s apparent she doesn’t need my validation

It’s amazing what two years and tenacity will do to your fanbase: from Webster Hall and highschool kids, to Roseland and high profile industry people (oddly enough making up for the bulk of non-dancing attendees who congregated around my nook); Even more amazing is what two weeks and a Twitter will do to your fan club — of haters …

Keep in mind … that was just last Monday — and not even the half of it. Moving on though, I didn’t post on Spring coming to DC; or my having to drop her off at National because Summer decided to catch an early flight in — six to eight weeks early. Again though, I doubt anyone in DC — or on the Eastern Seaboard — needed the heads up about the heat, at least not these kids …

I don’t know if the little girl’s chagrin is over the sun or swine flu — but either way she is feeling the struggle of life.

That said, I didn’t post on the litany of massive events this past week … but I had to post on Bea. We lost a great one …

she got it from her momma …

Estelle and Bea; Sophia and Dorothy. Epic.

That’s all for now. So beat. In the interest of time — and sanity — I’m going to clog and tumble my thoughts for a bit, until I get a chance to breathe and blog. Ciao kids.
