Record Cold in Regina, Estevan

Regina Beats 92-Year-Old Record Low

For people camping at Craven, or elsewhere, it was a chilly start to the weekend in parts of southern Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada meteorologist Jean Theriault (TERR-ee-oh) says Regina broke the record cold temperature for July 11.

“3.1 recorded this morning, the previous record was 3.9, an old one, recorded in 1917,” Theriault said Saturday morning. Estevan also set a new record, but Theriault couldn’t confirm if there were any otherse.

Theriault says overnight lows and daytime highs should be around normal in the coming days, but adds that much of Canada has been experiencing a cold-weather pattern.

“It looks like things are not really changing, it’s the same pattern,” he says. “Cold lows that aren’t really moving, and staying over parts of the country for weeks at a time.

“And the pattern is not changing yet, so we’ll have to be patient.”

In roughly a week our second son graduates from university, so of course SWMBO’d and I are on our way back east for the big event. As well, it is my brother’s birthday at about the same time so we decided to travel from Calgary to Toronto via Delaware – not the most direct route, but at least it offered the advantage of being about to buy the US subsidised gasoline along the way. So far at least, it has ranged between 12 ¢ and 25 ¢’s per litre cheaper on the south side of the border for premium fuel than it is in Calgary, which really does add up on a long trip !

We crossed the border near Estevan in Saskatchewan and the last 50 km or so of travel into Estevan defines ‘flat’ – I think the highest point of elevation is the rail way track which runs along the highway ! In stark contrast, the area south of Estevan has been churned up a lot due to open pit coal mining over many years leaving heaps of over burden, rubble and small ponds etc., seemingly with nature left on its own as far as reclamation is concerned. As you move across North Dakota into Minnesota and then to Wisconsin the flatness and openness gives way more and more to rolling terrain and trees. In fact the over whelming impression one gets as you drive east towards the coast is that the lands formerly cleared by settlers for farming etc., have largely been reclaimed by woodlands, so that by the time you have got to Pennsylvania it has the appearance of being little else but forest. And in that forest are a lot of elm trees which obviously are making a bit of a comeback ! In the eastern side of Pennsylvania and up into New York there are signs of what I assume is Dutch Elm disease, with dead elms standing ghostly white here and there, but even so there are still many mature elm trees that seem to be doing just fine which is nice to see.

Our arrival in Delaware was uneventful and we will leave for Canada today, with a detour in the Kingston area to do a bit of genealogy research.

In 1971, I was living on a farm just outside of Radville with my fractured family. My mother, having decided to live sober, was away in treatment for months, leaving my sister and my younger brother alone with my alcoholic father. My older brother and sister left – scared to be there without the protection of my mother. That summer, right after grade 4, my mom decided to leave my dad, but didn’t tell him.  He found out through a nosy neighbour who eavesdropped on a conversation on our party line.  It was devastating and scary as a 10 year old to be confronted by my father about leaving him.

When the day came, we packed up everything and my mother made the sacrifice of leaving my mother behind when we moved to Estevan to start our new lives.

When my parents split up, I was happy.  I knew I wouldn’t be scared all the time. My early childhood was often hellish, but losing my brother for eight years was worse.  I don’t think any of us ever fully recovered from that.

Eindelijk riepen we allen in koor, toen Nonkel Fester vrijdagavond het verlossende berichtje stuurde “Estevan is geboren en we liggen op kamer 6″. Wijle dus zodag op bezoek ! In het 16e ziekenhuis bleken we eindelijk de juiste kamer 6 te hebben gevonden en aanschouwden aldaar het schoonste tafereel iemand aanschouwen kan. Een trotse vader en moeder met een vers gelegd kindje. Alles aanwezig in de juiste verhoudingen en met juiste aantallen zoals we pleegden te zeggen. Estevan, ik vind het echt wel een ongewone maar mooie naam. (Ik vreesde trouwens lang dat het jongetje “The Bolton Wanderers” zou geheten hebben, maar ook daar alweer later meer over). Een echt schatje is het dat algauw van arm tot arm sprong om van dichtbij te worden aanschouwd en verheerlijkt. Nogmaals een dikke proficiat dus aan de trotse ouders. Foto’s van het wonder kunnen op de welbekende plek hier rechts worden aanschouwd.

Alles goed tot… De papa ons wist te zeggen “Ja en ‘t is den eerste echte westvlaamsen FAMILIENAAM”. Ik antwoorde heel spontaan (maar enkel binnensmonds, zo laf ben ik wel) : “ocharme”. En om zout in de wonde te strooien, wordt het wonderkind nu ook nog gedoopt… Een “gedoopte westvlaming”, kansen op succes met andere woorden : Nihil. Nu ja, wie ben ik…. En twas zo goed begonnen !

Estevan jongen, net zoals andere gedoopten in de familie zal ik u ten gepaste tijde uitleggen van de Big Bang en de evolutietheorie zodat ge de 7e rib, het lopen over water en andere zever vergeet… Hierbij beloofd, Ik kan er al een groepssessie van maken, want ik ken er nog eentje voor wie ik dat moet doen….
