We were watching TCM one night which happened to be an Esther Williams technicolor spectacle. In one scene, the glass to the tank shatters, and Esther Williams gets swept through in a torrent of water. My girlfriend, who had read this book, told me how Esther Williams was horribly lacerated by the shards of glass. Oh, and she was three or four months pregnant. She began to regale me with tales of the pains and wounds she had to endure while making her films. Immediately, I knew I wanted to read this.

It was a fascinating and eye-opening view into not just the studio system, but the life of the glamourous starlets. It totally reformed my thoughts towards how certain actresses get treated — by the media and particularly assholes like myself. Esther Williams was The Million Dollar Mermaid, and despite her desire to find more heady fare or take on dramatic roles, nobody was interested. They just wanted to watch her swim — she was nothing but a dazzling beauty in a swimsuit who amazed people with her athleticism and joie de vive. Her movies made ridiculous amounts of money, because it was a distraction from the war crushing America at the time. So the studios went to ludicrous efforts to find ways of chopping up scripts and cramming her in a swimsuit. Every project she took on suddenly became about a swim instructor, or an Olympic swimmer or a children’s lifeguard No matter how asinine, they found a way to get Esther Williams in a pool. It made me reconsider my attacks on some actors and actresses. It’s easy to ridicule someone like Will Smith for forsaking his Six Degrees of Separation roots, but that’s what people want to see. Larry the Cable Guy — the character — is a mouthbreathing retard, but the man himself is pretty savvy to have hornswaggled the career he did out of playing a hillbilly doofus. I’m sure he stares in the mirror and loathes the scumbum scowling back. Then he climbs in his Hummer and goes and tells Git R Done jokes.

The Esther Williams biography also breaks into the typical starlet relegation of the ups and downs of being a celebrity. She goes through multiple failed marriages. She tells of the insults and tribulations dealt through the contract demands. During one of the Buzby Berkeley razzamattaz numbers, she actually almost broke her neck diving into a pool from great heights wearing a golden crown. She drifted around the pool in agony, while everyone went to lunch, leaving her almost to drown. She dishes the dirt on some of her co-celebs. It’s fantastic to read the salacious accounts of grabass from guys like Johnny Weismueller and Clark Gable. Lucille Ball is a jealous harpie. Gene Kelly is a complete perfectionist dick. Of course, all of this is through the filter of Esther herself. And she’s kind of flawed.

The harshest part was reading about her relationship with Fernando Lamas, Lorenzo’s pop. He controlled her and shoved her in the shadows for over twenty years. She wasn’t allowed to see her children, do appearances, or anything that would take the spotlight from Fernando. This is a savvy business woman, with her own brands and such, who had become destitute thanks to bad business dealings. And Fernando is an incredible asshole. I’m glad Billy Crystal mocked the hell out of him on Saturday Night Live. You look mahvelous, but you’re a dickwad.

It’s a little overlong, but it was a great read. It really did make me rethink my bitchiness towards the predictability of celebrity. It’s not necessarily about quality, but what makes money. It’s a business, as much as we want to decry artistry being cast aside for spectacle, that’s what makes the money. If we became more discerning, we might get quality. But until that day comes, deal with the splashy.

This is something I should have written months ago, however with so much time passing since Zarif first came to my attention I thought there’d be no point anymore.  But now I sit here anxious, I find it hard to sleep because one of the brightest stars to emerge to the UK Soul scene has seemingly disappeared…

I discovered Zarif on the way to work one morning while reading a newspaper discarded on the Jubilee Line.  The article was about the UK Soul scene and Zarif was one of the artists mentioned.  I then went on a journey of discovery (well to the Myspace page) that reinvigorated my love for UK Soul music.

Zarif a UK born Iranian has a jaunty soul sound; part Esther Williams, part Nicole Russo with  a keen attention to instrumentation, from the booming brass on Box of Secrets, to the casual West Coast Red Hot Chilli Peppers-esque California, Zarif is reminiscent of Ms. Winehouse before she met Mr. Ronson – just with a lot more kick.

My first live Zarif experience was a small acoustic set she did at Barfly.  All the songs on the Myspace page stripped bare; just her and two guitarists.  It blew me away.  Then a few weeks later she rocked out at Madame Jojo’s, the booming instruments returned and the funk was overflowing.  I was sure a star was being born.

…and now I sit at my laptop wondering where she has gone.  Her third single, Over (one of the songs of the year), was due out on August 10^th however I cannot find it anywhere.  The album was due to come out sometime this year (according to RTV in spring), however that too is untraceable.  It’s happened before great, acts disappearing without a trace.  Yes, she played Glasto, V Festival and toured with Beyonce however they would have been booked a long time ago…

Zarif are you out there?  Give us a sign?  Date Peter Andre, join the Sugababes, something, anything to let us know is all ok because I am starting to fear that there is a fantastic album out there we may never hear.

J’ai découvert deux films intéressants, « Across The Universe » qui utilise le répertoire du groupe « Beatles » et plus récemment « Mamma Mia ! » qui emprunte les chansons du groupe « Abba ».

Deux films, très différents, à voir si vous aimez le répertoire de l’un ou de l’autre groupe, ou simplement si vous aimez vous détendre devant la télé.

Llegados a estas alturas del mes de julio y con las Vacaciones de Verano a la vuelta de la esquina no podemos olvidar hacer un breve recorrido por la historia del Traje de baño tan querido y odiado , depende del dia..

El primer traje de baño, fue un taparrabos velado que utilizó una cortesana egipcia, de nombre Tais, para darse un chapuzón junto con Alejandro Magno y todo su ejercito, un “olé” por ella, según dicen las malas lenguas ninguno de ellos estaba vestido..

En una antigua villa siciliana se encontraron mosaicos que datan del 1600 a.C. decorados con dibujos de mujeres vistiendo trajes de baño de dos piezas pero la verdadera historia del traje de baño se remonta a cuando los médicos comenzaron a recetar baños de sol y de mar.

Durante el siglo XIX diversos doctores, que habían descubierto las propiedades relajantes de un buen chapuzón, recomendaron a sus pacientes dicha práctica no sólo como remedio para ciertas enfermedades, sino también para la depresión e incluso el mal de amores.
De este mono surgió la necesidad de crear algún atuendo específico para esos baños.

Hacia 1855, el periódico londinense The Times ya dedicaba varias columnas al escándalo que suponía el uso de los trajes de baño que, en un principio, no se distinguían mucho de los de calle.
El de las damas consistía en un vestido de franela de corpiño ajustado y cuello alto, con mangas hasta el codo y falda hasta las rodillas.La austeridad del vestuario se complementaba con pantalones bombachos, medias negras e incluso, hasta zapatillas de lona.
El de los caballeros era bastante similar.
Aquellos trajes tenían muy poco de práctico y menos aún de atractivo.
A la ridiculez que de por sí suponían, había que agregarle el peligro de que los bombachones, confeccionados con gruesas y duras telas de tapicería, se volvieran aún más pesados por el agua y terminaran en los tobillos.

La prenda fue evolucionando conforme a los progresos de la industria textil. En este sentido, la historia del traje de baño le debe mucho al danés Jantzen, que durante años experimentó con distintos géneros.
Por aquella época su apellido llegó a ser sinónimo del traje de baño elástico que se ciñe al cuerpo, un invento de su autoría que más tarde, ya cerca de 1930, dio lugar al “dos piezas”.
La revolucionaria novedad playera era este bañador sin espalda y detirantes finísimos que dejaba muy poco a la imaginación.
Sin embargo, fue el diseñador francés Louis Réard quien 16 años después despertó verdadera indignación.
Su colección de mallas “dos piezas escandalosamente pequeñas” convulsionó el mundo de la moda marcando un antes y un después.

En la decada de los 40 la estrella cinematográfica Esther Williams pone de moda el traje de baño, podemos verla en sus peliculas musicales acuáticos luciendo una gran variedad de estos modelos.

Curiosamente, durante 1946 se estaban realizando una serie de explosiones nucleares en el archipiélago de las islas Bikini, en el Pacífico Sur, y la prensaba saturaba a los lectores de noticias relativas a dichas pruebas.
El día del lanzamiento de su exclusiva línea de trajes de baño, Réard le preguntó a su modelo (Micheline Bernardini, bailarina y desnudista del casino de París, ya que ninguna modelo profesional se prestó a desfilar indumentaria tan poco decorosa) cómo podrían bautizar a la innovadora prenda.

Bernardini señaló que el atuendo en cuestión sería “más explosivo que la bomba de Bikini”. A Réard la asociación le resultó ingeniosa y decidió adoptar el nombre de “bikini” para su invento.

Gracias al nacimiento de la lycra, el bikini multiplicó sus posibilidades.

La primera celebridad que usó el bikini públicamente fue Brigitte Bardot, en la película Y Dios creó a la mujer (1956). Después, Jayne Mansfield lo lució en la portada de la revista Life, le siguieron Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth y la “chica Bond” Ursula Andress.

Con la libertad de expresión y la apertura política y social llegan el top-less desde Europa y la tanga, Desde Brasil. En la actualidad, las opciones se multiplican.
Para muchos, constituyen la prueba inobjetable de que, en ciertos casos, menos es más.

Yo, personalmente, me quedo con los bañadores de los años 50, tambien es cierto que no a todo el mundo le quedan bien, y hay quien los tacha de horteras, “de vieja” o cosas por el estilo, a mi me parecen cómodos, y que si eliges el correcto estilizan y pueden ser mucho mas elegantes que ir enseñando cacha por las playas, pero para gustos los colores..

Esther Williams was discovered by an MGM scout in Billy Rose’s Aquacade and became a star with Bathing Beauty (1942). Here she is in all her spangled glory. Note the water lily sequence (and the green and pink color scheme), a nice tie to the Monet exhibition currently on view at the High.

Coney Island was America’s playground and was at its hot-dog-eating, sunbathing, boardwalk-strolling, rollercoaster-riding height in the 1930s and 40s. Before air conditioning, suburban sprawl, and urban blight took its toll it was an amazing scene.

Vintage swim is practically synonymous with the name Esther Williams, and her swimwear line lives up to its promise (the site itself could be easier to navigate). Plus sizes are available from 16 to 26, although according to the size chart, they may run a little smaller than that.

PinupGirl’s retro swimwear line features suits up to 2X, though these tend to run a bit small, and are probably best suited (ha) for inbetweenies who wear a size 16 or smaller.  Hopefully, they’ll expand their size range soon!

Disabled woman turns into mermaid with Hollywood’s help

A mermaid’s tale

To be a beautiful mermaid gracefully swimming through water and splashing a tail is the fantasy of many little girls.

But when an Auckland woman sent a casual email to film producers Weta Workshop she never dreamed she would one day be doing just that.

In what is thought to be a world-first, the double amputee now has a mermaid’s tail to help her swim.

She appeared with swimming star Johnny Weismuller in Billy Rose’s “Aquacade” during the San Francisco World’s Fair, 1939-41, where she first attracted attention from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer scouts, as she noted in her autobiography. She also had to fend off the amorous attentions of Weismuller, whom she said acted as if he were Tarzan on and off the screen.

En voyant Bathing Beauty, je suis tombée en admiration devant Esther Williams et le superbe ballet aquatique final. Kitschissime et rétro à souhait mais tellement beau ! Et le film lui-même, une gentille comédie d’époque, ne manque pas de touches d’humour – Red Skelton, un grand dadais roux, en tutu, qui dit mieux ? Pour la musique de Xavier Cugat, allez voir ici.

Mon appétit n’est pas encore assouvi pour ce genre de choses, avez-vous d’autres films à me conseiller ?

Un article sur la musique cubaine, oui, mais pas de son, de Buena Vista Social Club et autre Compay Segundo – les musiques cubaines sont bien plus riches que tout ce que la mode des dernières années a bien voulu nous présenter (et nous présente toujours, voir Café Cubano – ME3080).

Dès le début du 20e siècle sont nés de grands orchestres qui jouaient des airs latins d’origine cubaine, brésilienne, argentine et qui ont eu un succès fou par delà les frontières. En témoignent des disques comme Mambo à Paris, 1949-1953 (ME0262), Tango, le tango à Paris 1907-1941 (MG2221), Finnischer tango – Tule tanssimaan (MO9061), Cubans in Europe, 1929-1932 (ME3107) et bien d’autres encore. Et Xaviet Cugat dans tout ça ? D’origine espagnole (né le 1er janvier 1900) mais ayant grandi et étudié à Cuba, Xavier Cugat a contribué à la diffusion des musiques latines aux Etats-Unis. Il a travaillé pour le cinéma et a été à la tête de l’orchestre résident de plusieurs grands hôtels new-yorkais comme le Waldorf Astoria – ah cette belle époque où chaque hôtel se devait de divertir ses hôtes avec un orchestre de qualité, tout en proposant des boissons rafraîchissantes et des cocktails élaborés par les plus grands barmen !

Xavier Cugat était un personnage assez difficile à vivre, assez exigeant, en témoigne le changement fréquent de personnel dans son orchestre; mais les meilleurs musiciens et chanteurs de l’époque ont tous joué pour lui, de Miguelito Valdez, excellent chanteur de mélodies afro-cubaines, notamment pour l’orchestre Casino de La Playa ou le Riverside Orchestra, à Lina Romay, une charmante chanteuse mexicaine, du grand vocaliste Machito qui se fera remarquer dans le courant du jazz afro-cubain à Dinah Shore. Cordes et cuivres composaient son orchestre, le marimba et les percussions cubaines étaient omniprésentes. Il a joué tous les styles de musiques sur ses 60 ans de carrière, du bolero, au mambo, au cha cha cha.

N’oublions pas non plus ses performances dans de nombreux films d’Hollywood, avec son orchestre, où son charme et ses traits d’esprit ainsi que ses talents de showman ajoutaient une touche de glamour tout latin aux images. Je vous conseille Bathing Beauty (VB0721), avec son kitschissime mais si grandiose ballet aquatique dans lequel Esther Williams montre tous ses talents de nageuse et le morceau Bim Bam Bum qui est resté quelques semaines comme “song in my head”. Le clip suivant vient d’un autre film, Stage Door Canteen (VC0404), dans lequel on voit “Cugie” et Lina Romay.

A part ça, il s’est marié cinq fois, s’est lancé dans de nombreuses entreprises commerciales allant de l’élevage et de la vente de chihuahua à la fabrication de “Cugat’s nugats”, des bonbons; il a été propriétaire d’un restaurant et à 86 ans, il menait toujours un orchestre à Madrid et préparait un nouveau mariage. Il est décédé le 27 octobre 1990.

Une musique vintage, rétro à souhait mais qui garde tout son pouvoir de séduction. Wong Kar-wai ne s’est d’ailleurs pas trompé en utilisant certains de ses morceaux (Perfidia, notamment) dans Days of Being Wild et 2046 (VD1655).

La Médiathèque possède une grande quantité de ses enregistrements dont la plupart ont été réédités sur le label Harlequin. Par quel disque commencer ? Difficile à dire mais Bim bam bum [1935-1940] (ME4860) offre une bonne introduction, reprenant quelques grands hits ou Xavier Cugat and his orchestra 1940-42 (ME4863), avec des plages de sa meilleure période.

El actor mexicano Ricardo Montalbán nos ha dejado a los 88 años.Participó en películas y series de televisión. Es considerado todo un gentleman con buena voz y un gran talento interpretativo, todos estos ingredientes le auguraron un gran futuro en la gran pantalla como se demostró después. Comenzó su carrera cinematográfica a mediados de los años cuarenta en varias películas mexicanas, una de las más recordadas una de ellas, Pepita Jiménez, junto a la española exiliada Rosita Díaz Gimeno.
Sus mayores éxitos fueron cosechados en Hollywood y ocasionalmente en Broadway pero aún así el siempre quiso presenvar su origen y cultura conservando su nacionalidad mexicana.Al llegar a EEUU pretendieron cambiarle el nombre por el de Rick Martín a lo que el actor se negó.
Entre sus películas recordamos en las que compartió escena Junto a la estrella acuática Esther Williams en como Fiesta brava (1947), En una isla contigo (1948) o La hija de Neptuno (1949). Le vimos junto a Clark Gable, en Más de allá del Missouri (1961); también en El gran combate (1964), de John Ford; de japonés en Sayonara (1957) junto a Marlon Brando; de malvado Khan en Strar Trek,de millonario latino en Noches en la ciudad, junto a Shirley MacLaine.
Y en España por si fuera poco actuó con nada más y nada menos que Carmen Sevilla en Los amantes del desierto (1957), uno de los rodajes más complicados del cine español ya que en esa época en Egipto que fue donde se filmó la película estalló la guerra del canal del Suez.
El mantenimiento de su nacionalidad se debía en gran parte por mejorar la imagen pública del colectivo latino a través de la fundación ‘Nosotros’ que creó en 1970.Montalbán consiguió un premio Emmy por su trabajo en La conquista del Oeste en 1978 y en 1957 fue nominado a los premios Tony por el musical Jamaica. Trabajador nato hasta el final de sus días a pesar de la olenci grave por la que fue sometido a varias intervenciones quirúrgicas.
