Perhaps Friedman could use Gallagher's "Sledge-O-Matic?"

Thomas Friedman, author of recent book Hot, Flat, and Crowded and New York Times columnist, combines a multi-discipline framework in analyzing some of the most complex issues facing our country, from both an economic and political perspective. Friedman’s distinctive lens he uses to assimilate the world, coupled with his exceptional ability of breaking down and articulating these thorny challenges into bite-sized stories and analogies, makes him a one-of-a-kind journalist. Whether it’s explaining the history of war through McDonald’s hamburgers, or using the Virgin Guadalupe to explain the rise of China, Friedman brings highbrow issues down to the eye-level of most Americans.

In his seminal book, The World is Flat, Friedman explains how technology has flattened the global economy to a point where U.S. workers are fighting to keep their domestic tax preparation and software engineering jobs, as new emerging middle classes from developing countries, like China and India, steal work.

The Flat World

In boiling down the recent financial crisis, Friedman used Iceland to explain the “flattening” of the globe:

“Fifteen British police departments lost all their money in Icelandic online savings accounts. Like who knew? I knew the world was flat – I didn’t know it was that flat…that Iceland would become a hedge fund with glaciers.”

The left-leaning journalist hasn’t been afraid to bounce over to the “right” when it comes to foreign affairs and certain fiscally conservative issues. For example, he initially full-heartedly supported George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq. And on global trade, he has a stronger appreciation of the economic benefits of free trade as compared to traditionally Democratic protectionist views.

Calling All Better Citizens

In a recent Charlie Rose interview, Friedman’s patience with our country’s citizenry has worn thin – he believes government leaders cannot be relied on to solve our problems.

When it comes to the massive deficits and foreign affair issues, Friedman comes to the conclusion we need to cut expenses or raise taxes. By creating a $1 per gallon gasoline tax, Friedman sees a “win-win-win-win” solution. Not only could the country wean itself off foreign oil addiction from authoritarian governments and create scores of new jobs with E.T. (Energy Technologies), the tax could also raise money to reduce our fiscal deficit, and pay for expanded healthcare coverage.

It’s fairly clear to me that government can’t show the leadership in cutting expenses.  Since cutting benefits for voters won’t get you re-elected, taxes most certainly will have to go up. Wishful thinking that a recovering economy will do the dirty, debt-cutting work is probably naïve.  If forced to pick a poison, the gas tax is Friedman’s choice.  I’m not so sure the energy lobby would feel the same?

Political gridlock has always been an obstacle for getting things done in Washington. Technology, scientific polling, 24/7 news cycles, and deep-pocketed lobbyists are only making it tougher for our country to deal with our difficult challenges. Regardless of whether Friedman’s gasoline tax is the silver bullet, I welcome the clear, passionate voice from somebody that understands the challenges of living in a flat world.

Hoy por hoy (un inicio así nunca falla) resulta común pensar que el mundo de los videojuegos es una industria gigantesca, sin grietas de ningún tipo. Una suerte de mina de oro llevada a la enésima potencia, un emporio sólo comparable al de la televisión e Internet. Es verdad que parece impensable que un buen día los videojuegos se fueron a pique y que se llegó a considerar que un simple título podía literalmente hundir (ya veremos por qué  digo literalmente) a una industria que, para ser justos, estaba en sus inicios.

Situémonos: año 1982. El corazón mismo de la era más hermosa, fructífera y genial del cine de fantasía y ciencia ficción. Mientras la pantalla grande veía monumentales estrenos de la talla de Indiana Jones, La Historia Sin Fin, Los Goonies, Volver al Futuro y Blade Runner (por mencionar un rápido Top Five), la  incipiente industria de los videojuegos comenzaba a tomar forma. Y digo “forma” porque en esos años plantaba bandera la Atari 2600, que aún a base de píxeles bastante poco demostrativos, comenzaba mostrar personajes que se asemejaban un poco más a la realidad que los siempre fieles pero sencillos palillos del Pong.

Los videojuegos, además, comenzaban a adaptar películas. Y no es inentendible que la genialidad de Steven Spielberg plasmada en “ET, el extraterrestre” tuviera su correlato en el mundo virtual e interactivo (dos palabras profundamente ochentosas). Todo parecía de manual: hacer un juego basado en la peli, venderlo como pan caliente y a meter los verdes en las islas Caimán y que la magia de la economía haga el resto.

Convencido de ésto, Howard Scott Harshaw desarrolló el jueguito en cuestión y Atari pagó… entre 25 y 30 millones de dólares por los derechos de la peli. ¿Una bestialidad, hablando mal y pronto? Los cerebros de Atari consideraron que los gastos por derechos serían ínfimos al lado de la recaudación. Para ir al grano, les falló el cálculo.

Se vendieron 1,5 millones de juegos. Nada mal, podría pensarse, excepto por el pequeño detalle de que se habían producido cuatro millones, una cantidad exhorbitante para esas épocas, pero que parecía coherente si se tiene en cuenta que ET había sido la gran revolución cinematográfica en muchos años.

¿Adónde fueron a parar las millones de copias restantes? Antes de que se apresure cualquier respuesta grosera (pero no por ello del todo desacertada) cabe decir que en este punto la realidad se confunde con la leyenda. En Nuevo México comenzó a correrse el rumor, allá por principios de los ochenta, que varios camiones de la empresa Atari, cargados con cartuchos de ET, arrojaban los juegos a enormes fosas cavadas en la región y enterraban la sobreproducción. Las pérdidas de la empresa pusieron a Atari al borde de la quiebra y aunque las versiones de “los ET’s enterrados” nunca fueron del todo corroboradas, la empresa sí admitió que por esos años se había deshecho de bastante material, aunque no apuntó concretamente a os juegos basados en el amigo intergaláctico de Elliot.

¿Por qué ET de tari racasó? Quizás la economía pueda dar simpáticas respuestas al respecto. Pero, en términos gamers… básicamente el juego apestaba. Incialmente Atari quería un videojuego sencillo, con la misma lógica que el Pac Man, pero Harshaw, que ya había cosechado sus triunfos y la bendición de Spielberg con su adaptación de Raiders of  The Lost Ark para consolas hogareñas, quiso dar un paso más adelante y plantear un juego de ET que se pareciera a la película.

Quizás Harshaw haya visto algo que ningún otro humano pudo apreciar en la obra maestra de Spielberg, pero el caso es que el juego apenas se aprecía a la película en el hecho de que unos cuadrados (supuestamente policías) perseguían a ET. El hecho era que la mecánica del juego, lisa y llanamente, no se entendía nada.

Hoy es considerado “el peor juego de la historia”. Quizás sea tan snob como decir que Plan 9 es la peor película de la historia (siendo que existe la Star Wars Brasileña), pero en cualquier caso lo cierto es que esta inentendible versión de ET amagó con hundir algo más que una millonada de cartuchos.

Lachezar Filipov directorul adjunct al Institutului de Cercetarea Spatiului de pe langa Academia de Stiinte a Bulgariei confirma ca s-au trimis un set de 30 de intrebari catre…extraterestrii si se asteapta raspusul ..acestora! Ei mai spun ca analizeaza 150 de imagini imprimate in lanuri de vegetatie in diferite locuri din lume, si spera ca prin ele sa gaseasca raspunsul. ET sunt peste tot in jurul nostru si ne observa de mult timp. Ei nu ne sunt ostili si ar fi dornici sa ne ajute, dar nu duntem destul de..maturi ca sa stabilim un contact de legatura cu ei. Dl Filipov spune ca legatura nu se poate face cu ei prin unde radio… ci prin unde telepatice (mentale). In mod cert rasa umana va avea contact cu civilizatii ET in urmatorii 10-15 ani. ET privesc critic oamenii care distrug echilibrul naturii.

Nu e nimic ciudat in stire: toti turistii sunt mai bine primiti la bulgari decat la noi ! Doar ca astia … ET … nu lasa bacsis ! Si nici nu sunt prea atenti la … aeronava din parcare !

Aliens ’already exist on earth’, Bulgarian scientists claim

While I hate to run over The Q’s eye-opening introduction to love, dating, and internet-savvy in the 21st century below, I’m going to have to bump his latest take on contemporary issues with a tribute to a great from our past.

Today is Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving will always remind me of one very important thing: Thelonious Monk.

I come from a very food-centric family, so Thanksgiving has always consisted of large gatherings of family, friends, and friends of friends. Years ago, one such friend of a friend was an elderly man who was vaguely related to a great aunt in some way, and so invited to our dinner. He was just another body; I don’t remember actively thinking about him until he excused himself from the table, sat down at a piano hidden in the corner, and began to play.

When someone asked why he was playing in the middle of the dinner, he replied, seriously, “A delicious meal like this needs good music. Really good music.” This answer was met with cheers and applause from our family, who view the pleasures of life – culinary, musical, and everything else – as vital to humanity’s well-being.

When someone else asked what he was playing, he replied, “Thelonious Monk. Stuffy Turkey.”

At the time, I was only about 9 or 10 years old, so the fact that this man was playing something called “Stuffy Turkey” while I was eating turkey was all I needed to be content with the situation.

But now, at the ripe age of 24, that titular wordplay means far less than everything else that came out of that man playing a piano for the rest of the night.

That night was the first time that I ever heard the name Thelonious Monk.

It was the first time I’d ever heard anything played on a piano that wasn’t dense in the way that Chopin and Mozart and other classical music can be dense for a 10 year old.

It was the first time I saw my grandmother and grandfather dance their slow, close version of a waltz. The first time I saw my mom and dad, holding hands and laughing, disappear out the back door for a good hour or so. The first time I saw my quiet, reserved aunt belt out some old bluesy tune in a voice that I never knew existed.

I’ve since become a humble fan of Thelonious Monk’s music, and taken an even more humble interest in his life and his genius and his beautiful struggles. But on that first night, when that unremarkable man first insisted that we, as a group of people who had gathered to celebrate, enjoy “really good music”, Thelonious Monk was less a musician or a man, and much more a catalyst. His Stuffy Turkey, floating out of a creaky old piano over the heads of persons who had no idea who he was, opened us up. It moved us.

On that night, it transformed us.

And isn’t that music’s amazing potential? That, at it’s best, music has the power to completely warp the reality we are wedged in, and transport us to a completely different reality? That it can enlighten us?

So this Thanksgiving: Gather. Eat. Drink, laugh, celebrate, and love.

But please, do all of that with the help of some good music. Really good music.

Mientras viajo a Brasil (y no, no hice cola en el aeropuerto! toma cachito de goma!) me informan algo que estaba esperando hace rato y me comía las uñas por contarles. De hecho, todos esos tics enfermizos que aprecian Uds. cuando me ven en la tele, eran producto de esto.

Por fin, podemos anunciar que se suma a nuestro comando…

Sí, ese extraño personaje verde con antenas que conocí en Antofagasta, me cautivó y hemos decidido incluirlo en nuestro comando para que trabaje junto al equipo digital. Bienvenido, extraño personaje.
