I am in love.

Let me clarify.  Sir Oliver Lodge and John Tyndall are men I continue to return to, continue to be fascinated with.  Thanks to a delay at work, I have had several hours to return to a book (haphazardly and luckily thrown in my bag this morning) about the life of Lodge. 

Reading biographies always makes me re-evaluate my own life.  I’d never heard of Lodge before I began this strange pursuit of ether science.   Now I find myself reading about his life and feeling like I stumble into old friends.  

Because I have the time, here is my history with Lodge:

I stumbled on Sir Walter Rayleigh’s scattering principle while looking for a way to structure my thesis.  He charted observations of the blue sky, and the resulting image looked like the graceful arc of iris petals.  I wanted to understand why, and so I began to look into refraction and reflection, which led me to John Tyndall.  Within his transcriptions from his light lectures Tyndall talked about the humours of the eye (poem inspired is available upon request) and the ether of the sky.  As anyone who has accidently asked me what I’ve been working on can attest, I haven’t been the same since.  I know more about ether than anyone ought to–and I’m beginning to move into dark matter.  But that’s another topic.

In reading (and reading and reading) about ether, I continue to run into the same names.  This isn’t strange, but what does strike me is how often I run into the same names in different contexts.  A few weeks ago my cousin gave us tickets to Bone Portraits, a play about Edison and X-Rays.  Roentgen was one of the characters, and in reading about Lodge today, there was Roentgen.  Lodge worked with telegraphy at the same time as Marconi, but I would hazard a guess that more people would recognize the Italian.  He corresponded with J. J. Thompson (later Lord Kelvin) and had dinners with H. G. Wells.  Men whose names I remember from science class years ago inhabit these pages, but I can’t remember hearing about Lodge before two years ago.  He seems to be relegated to the “and others” part of most descriptions. 

Who will be the names remembered from the communities (scientists, artists, musicians) now, and who will become “and others”? It is an exercise in futility to project into the future who will be remembered from the past.  Creating is always an attempt at immortality, and some will succeed.  I want to say that Lodge failed, but even that isn’t really true.  I know about him now, and so do you.  Ask me about his theories and his life, and I will tell you more.  This is what I do for love.

If you’re tired of the usual New Year’s Eve party locations, or you don’t much fancy having firecrackers thrown in your face by children on Stephansplatz, why not head over to the Rhiz for a special end-of-year show by Bulbul? This fun-loving Austrian trio are a regular fixture on the Vienna live circuit, bringing home the point that there’s nothing like frequent gigging if you’re a band that wants to get noticed. Fresh from his triumphant appearance with Jandek in October, drummer DD Kern will be joined by Raumschiff Engelmayr and Derhunt (possibly not his real name) for an evening of angular, splintery rock with lots of distorted guitar and pounding bass – the ideal way to wave goodbye to the old year and say hello to 2010.

My final recommendation of the year also goes to an Austrian group, The Scarabeusdream. The duo from Burgenland serve up an electrifying mix of keyboards, drums and screamed-out vocals. Pianist Bernd Supper approaches the keyboard like he’s fighting with it, standing up to play and hammering relentlessly down on the keys, while drummer Hannes Moser’s engagement with his kit is similarly deranged and physical. The group’s début album Sample Your Heartbeat To Stay Alive showcases their aggressively minimalist approach to great effect.

Another cracking month for concerts. Top of the list is the visit of Six Organs of Admittance, playing in the grimy surroundings of the Kleine Halle at the Arena. Six Organs is more or less guitarist Ben Chasny, joined by various collaborators for both live and studio work. Chasny tends to get lumped in with the “weird folk” crowd, which is actually not a bad shorthand for his uncanny and hypnotic blend of acoustic guitar-driven, mostly instrumental music. Calling to mind mystical Eastern ragas alongside the primitivist fingerpicking style of the late John Fahey, Six Organs music sparkles with melodic invention. On this tour, Chasny will be joined by electric guitarist Elisa Ambrogio, whose playing is as thrilling to watch as it is to listen to, and Alex Neilson, one of the most gifted and inventive drummers of modern times.

Moving right along, there’s an unmissable evening of free jazz and improvisation at the excellent Blue Tomato club this month, featuring two of the key figures in the genre. American saxophonist Ken Vandermark is a workaholic who spends most of his life on the road. His fierce and passionate playing effortlessly combines the swinging Fire Music style of Albert Ayler with the more abstract European style of Peter Brötzmann. Like most free jazz musicians, Vandermark has a list of collaborators as long as your arm; he’s one of those who believes in improvisation and ad hoc groupings as essential elements in keeping the music fresh and vital. On this occasion he’ll be joined by the awesomely talented Norwegian percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love, sticksman with The Thing (see the March 2009 issue of Ether), Brötzmann’s Chicago Tentet and too many others to mention. This kind of duo concert, with two musicians facing up to each other onstage with no preconceived notions of what they are going to play, represents for me the perfectly symmetrical essence of free improvisation.

And rounding things off, a very different kind of duo, KTL, the guitar and laptop pairing of Sunn O))) mastermind Stephen O’Malley and Vienna’s very own Peter Rehberg. O’Malley is the master of the drone guitar, playing pulverizingly loud sub-bass frequencies that resonate deep within you. Rehberg, meanwhile, coaxes all manner of hectic and crystalline sounds from his laptop. As well as being a formidable presence with their own records and concerts, KTL have often created music for dance and theatre pieces. It’s a natural move for them, therefore, to make film soundtrack music. As part of this year’s Wien Modern festival, they’ll be performing their own score to the classic early Swedish silent horror film, The Phantom Carriage, live as the film is shown.

"Mmmmm, mmmm, good."

I pride myself on being an individual as I go through life, foregoing trends, dodging the “norm”, and I try to avoid being what society says I am, or should be. My personal style, the way I speak, and even some of the music I listen to are all atypical of the demographic I fall into. This fact has been the reason for the position I took on a heated debate that was popular in the hip hop culture a few years back. It seemed to me that everybody and their mothers were busy stiff-arming, throwing elbows and gouging eyes out to get a spot on the ever so crowded Jay-Z bandwagon. Me, not so much. I was pumping my fist hard for my boy Esco. From Illmatic, to Nastradamus, to Untitled, I was on my own wagon with elbow room for days. Then the beef started. “Takeover” and “Ether” were the most popular dis tracks in the aforementioned feud between Nas and Jay-Z back in the ealry parts of the decade, and although only one verse in “Takeover” was directed at Nas, it was undoubtedly impressive. Hov bringing to the light Nas’s subpar releases since Illmatic put him on the map, as well as pointing out Mr. Jones’s attempt at intellectual rhymes. On “Ether”, Nas retorted, putting on blast the fact that S. Carter made a habit of using Biggie’s lines and also recycled an album name that had previously been pressed up. He also turned the tables on Jay-Z’s disdain for Queens rappers evidencing that Rockafella Records is run by a Queens native in the form of one Russell Simmons. There is no doubt in my mind that Ether decided the fate of Jay-Z in this epic hip-hop, heavyweight battle, giving the unanimous decision to the “QB true G”.

Throughout the entire beef and even through the “best rapper alive” debates, I stuck with my favorite, Nas. I never relented and always had a reason why I think Mr. Jones was “the best”, as evidenced in this previous post. Now, I don’t take back anything I said about Nas, and the assertions I put forth will always stand, but I must enjoy this big plate of crow sitting in front of me and state that Jay-Z is, indeed, the……..dare I say it?  The Best Rapper Alive!!! I came to this realization this morning as I listened to the Black Album while cleaning my place up. Every single track had me nodding my head and “rapping” along with the lyrics, as weird as that may sound. At one point, I had to stop and say, “Daaammmnnnn, that boy good.” I can now honestly admit that none of Jay’s albums were disappointments. My all-time favorite of course was the first, Reasonable Doubt. 22 Two’s is probably one of the most creative songs I’ve ever heard. Brooklyn’s Finest definitely stands up to the name of the track with the greatest and the third greatest rapper from the East Coast displaying their skills on wax. Nas still holds the spot as my favorite rapper of all-time, but he now comes in an extremely close second on my “Best Rapper Alive list.”

There are some wonderful concerts coming up over the next few months, none more so than the one this column is about – a unique occasion, the first ever appearance in central Europe by the American singer and musician Jandek. In case you’re wondering “who?”, let me tell you his fascinating story. Over the past 30 years, Jandek has released about 50 albums of strange, unearthly folk/rock/blues music. The albums come from a PO Box in Houston, Texas, and are never accompanied by any kind of biographical information. In all that time, Jandek has never given a single interview or made any kind of public statement. Until 2004, he had also never played any concerts or appeared in public. In that year, he surprised quite a few people by playing a short, unannounced set at a festival in Scotland, and since then he has evidently caught the touring bug, having played about 40 shows mostly in the US and UK.

Those 50 albums, taken together, represent a serious and intriguing body of work. At first listen, the music is alien and offputting. Jandek sings in a raw, pleading voice, and his guitar playing sounds untutored, as though he has only recently picked up the instrument. The lyrics are rambling, free-associative and often disturbing (sample lines: “I got my knife/If you want to breathe, baby/Don’t paint your teeth”). On some albums, Jandek plays harmonica and piano; other players include a female vocalist, a second guitarist and a drummer, all of whom are similarly untutored and, needless to say, unnamed. Others just consist of Jandek’s voice. The music sounds like it’s been recorded in a room at home, not in a studio. It has been aptly described as “sounding like the music found on an unlabelled tape left in a deserted house.”

The covers of the albums are an important part of the Jandek mythology and tell their own, fractured story. Many of them look like carelessly taken snapshots. Some of them show Jandek at different stages of his life (he’s in his mid-60s now), although until he began playing live, no-one could actually be sure that the man on the covers was the man playing the music. Others show the interior or exterior of houses, presumably where he was living at the time; the curtains in the windows are always tightly drawn.

Every one of Jandek’s shows is different, ranging from solo acoustic guitar to piano recitals and noisy, free-form rock. Sometimes he performs on his own, but more often than not he finds musicians from the city he is performing in and produces a concert of music especially written for each performance. For his Vienna début, he’ll be joined by two of the finest musicians from Vienna’s thriving avant rock/improv scene: Eric Arn of Primordial Undermind on bass and DD Kern of Fuckhead and Bulbul on drums. The unexpected is to be assumed…

1)   Why does our Vaccine Not have an ingredient list???

2)   Why are our Vaccine companies exempt from any sort of responsibility for any injuries that may result from taking our Vaccine???

3)   Why is our Vaccine proposed to Be the best option for protection against the Flu???      What about Natural Remedies — Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Fresh Juices, Healthy Immune System supporting foods and even products that have been proven to have incredibly strong influences on harmful pathogenic microbes, such as — Colloidal Silver, Silver Hydrosols, Blood Electrification or Miracle Mineral Solution???   I do Not follow our mainstream Media very closely and I do Not watch my Television except for comedy like Curb Your Enthusiasm or for watching DVD’s but I certainly have Not Seen any advertisement for Natural Remedies lately and really have been an relative outcast for as long as I can Remember for turning to Natural Healing.   What’s up with that???   Could it Be that Natural Remedies do Not support Pharmaceutical profits???

Apparently Mr. Barack Obama has declared the Swine Flu situation in our UNITED STATES OF AMERICA a “National Emergency.” Nonsense. Absolute utter garbage and a half.

WAKE UP TO THE TRUTH THAT YOU KNOW “THERE” BUT ARE SIMPLY NOT APPLYING “HERE”!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

Introduction

I AM writing about how we are All immersed in conflicts of interest.   My writing is Not particularly about Swine Flu, my writing is particularly about Conflicts of Interest.   I have found a significant amount of inFormation about our Swine Flu that is beyond different from what my Television tells Me……to say the least.   I have found inFormation……mounds of inFormation……that speculate, suggest, and even affirm that our Swine Flu VACCINE is actually Deadly.   My writing is about Why o Why it is so amazing and UNbelievable that our Trusted Health officials and socio-political leaders would or even could promote an inoculation (VACCINE) that is actually detrimental to our Health.   Well, I AM surely Not amazed.   I Understand that every single individual is SELF-interested and as long as Health and MONEY is mixed up, individuals and groups of individuals Named “Corporations” Will Be playing with people’s lives by promoting that which serves their Self-interests — Not the interests of the people — no no no no no, comon Now, does that even make any sense???   Self-interest is inevitable and You and Me and every other individual would gladly sell out their people AS LONG AS ‘THE PRICE IS RIGHT’ (Because “Life” is Nothing more than a Game-show).   The Body of My Thoughts focuses only on Conflicts of Interest and the necessity of corruption in any and every position of Power and Influence……it just is harder to apply this obvious principle to the positions of awesome Power and Influence.   However, the definition of a position of awesome Power and Influence is relative to the observer —— YOU decide your limits and YOU decide when suddenly your common sense and rationale should Be suspended to protect your Belief System and protect your Heart from a painful devastation or disappointment.  I AM just asking You to consider the fact that there are very very very different stories being Presented and each Source of inFormation has their own Self-Sourced Interests — Not YOUR Interests……THEIR interests.   You do the Same.   I do the Same.   Everything does the Same — it is inevitable and most importantly, Self-Interest and Conflict of Interest is Not inherently “bad” or “negative”…nor is it inherently “good” or “positive”, it is both and only YOU — the individual decide what You See and how your Image appears.   I AM only asking that You consider what I AM writing as You watch the videos and explore the links that I AM Presenting to You at the end of My writing.   For some, the inFormation that follows My Writing is Nothing New — simply conFormation and evidence of another devoted Truth seeker on the ‘Truth Movement Squad’, for others my inFormation is too ridiculous to even entertain as a minute POSSIBILITY.   Hehe, I Understand.   Simply consider the Logic and suddenly You can Now apply your Reason and common sense to a situation that may evade your common sense.   I decided to Write this blog and share inFormation that I had amassed a while ago and am actually writing a book about Right Now Because it is just so……WOW……   Understand that everything You See and Hear and say is simply reflecting an individual’s PERSONAL Interests.   Let Me tell You that I would NEVER allow our Swine Flu VACCINE in Me or anyOne that cares to listen.   Remember, as long as Life and Business are mixed……disgusting Truths are the inevitable Effect.   But No Worries —— just Remember that You are Responsible for your Life experience to the degree that You are AWARE of your Responsibility and inFormation is everything, so I would treat this inFormation with respect and value.   I have no “beef” or issue with our Media or our President or our Society, however, I DO have and issue with imBalanced rationale and blind bias, but then, even blind bias does Not really ‘bother’ Me —— All is Balance and All is cool, however, if there is anything that I would Be bothered by, then blind bias would bother Me.   Before You engage my Mind and enter into my craziness, let Me give You a tip from your tour guide —— I have done more research on Truth, Secret Agendas and Conflicts of Interest than most sane people could stomach and if You are to read into my inFormation then it is nearly imperative that You employ your Reason — Free from Emotion and knee-jerk reactions if You are to grow from what I have found.

Conflict of Interests — everywhere — even in dealing directly with our Human Life and our Human Mind, it’s All-pervading and for that Reason……it’s okay!!!   Just check Me out.

Before I get into some of the Reasoning Why Mr. Obama’s declaration MAY Be poppy cock, let Me just ask You a simple yet supremely significant question: “Have You ever Heard of the term ‘Conflict of Interests‘ ???”

Well, I Believe that we have been entertaining and Ignoring gross and obscene examples of nearly All-pervading Conflicts of Interest for generations Now and are continuing our Hilariously devastating tradition RIGHT NOW.   What we Here about Swine Flu and especially our Swine Flu VACCINE is just One example of a reflection of a Universal principle.   Self-Interest is The Law and even what we are told or Not told about a Vaccine that we put in our bodies is serving an individual’s or group’s Self-Interest.   This is important to Remember, Because we must consider what are the interests and Intentions that are behind the inFormation that we are told and Not told or rather what YOU accept and do Not accept.   Every individual, even our President and our Hero/Heroine is constantly perpetuating their Self-Interests, therefore, we must Know what the interests of our Teacher are, Because as hard as it is for us to Believe this sort of thing — our very Lives could actually depend on it.   What goes on in every single individual’s sphere of influence is literally the product of THAT INDIVIDUAL’S — WILL…and…BELIEF…and…AGENDAAAAAA, right???   It is Nothing to get pissed about, this is inevitable, in fact it is necessary, bias and conflict of interests is what we may calmly refer to as — “Influence” ; and is it Not impossible to escape even the slightest degree of influence??? Isn’t Life All about influence and the experience of influence??? Hahaha, of course Life is All about influence.

So then, I ask if You Realize that Vaccines cost MONEY to produce and implement??? Do You Realize that PEOPLE, People — just like You and Me and your Friends and your Family — MAKE MONEY OFF OF VACCINES??????   Have we been duping ourselves into Ignorance of inevitable Conflicts of Interest???   Seems to Be that Way in my opinion and based on my research.   Money and Vaccines……there is a magnificent CONFLICT OF INTERESTS Here!!! When Dr. Oz and ABC and FOX and every other mainstream Media Source speaks their Word about Vaccines, have we forgotten that people are getting paid to say Words that their payers allow in the Same Way that You keep your job and move up the ranks as long as You do what your bosses allow and like??? As if our mixing of health and business is Not enough of a CONFLICT OF INTERESTS, have You ever considered the possibility that the Controllers of our Sources of inFormation — (the very inFormation that we Live by and base our Perceptions of Reality on (to your specific degree) )— have monetary and Power interests in the Businesses and Ideas and Choices that are perpetuated through their mass Media giants??? But then, bias is inevitable, isn’t it??? When You look around and See a certain Pharmaceutical commercial and poster of a particular Celebrity and accompanying endorsing Corporation and song from an artist who is re-Present-ing a particular Corporation……it is so easy to forget that someOne CHOSE for things to go that Way — but someOne DID actually CHOOSE to allow this within their sphere of influence and Not that.   But Why this and Not that???

And You wanna Know what is sooo sooo funny??? Every Question that I have asked You —— YES!!! You did Know All of that stuff and YOU ARE AWARE!!!

HOWEVER!!!!!!

The Significance of Degree

I must Always Remember this my Love and I suppose that You may have to do the Same for yourSelf, Everything is Everything TO A DEGREE. Therefore, You Know your Answer……You ALWAYS Know your answer and You are ALWAYS smart enough to recognize utter nonsense — such as egregious Conflicts of Interest such as the combination of MONEY, Power and Health (Mental Health, Physical Health, Emotional Health and especially Spiritual Health). BUUUUUUT, You Always Know your answer —— to a degree.    As I AM so Happy to point out, while You may Be highly aware of and defensive against Conflicts of Interest when You Know that your buddy is selling You something (annnd your buddy also needs to make Money Because your buddy is principally focused on making their Money and less interested in YOUR welfare, relative to THEIR own welfare) noOne could apply their awareness to EVERY situation…EQUALLY…so You may Not Be aware of other more wide Eyed Conflicts of Interest.

Now, it is quite OBVIOUS to Me that You have Not applied this same common sense to your best best buddy —— your Television. You probably Understandably have a low awareness of and defense against – Conflicts of Interest regarding —- our President, your doctor, your chosen radio stations, your favorite musical artist(s) and favorite video artist(s) (i.e. actor(s)), your FAMILY etc., —— the Ones and the Things that You TRUST.

But then, we All must Remember that YOU (we), just like every other individual, are SELF-Interested and YOU (we), just like every other individual, are biased, corrupt and Ego-centric — it is called “Living”, it is called “Survival”, it is called “Existing” —— THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS OF DEGREE!!!!!!

So You must Understand that the principles that You live by are the SAME everywhere else, and the only difference is of Degree — AND that the scale of Degrees is INFINITE.

When You take Love to a low enough Degree, Love becomes definable as Hate. When You have a low enough degree of Knowledge, your Knowledge becomes Ignorance. The only difference between “Hideous” and “Ugly” and “UNattractive” and “Decent” and “Attractive” and “Smokin Hot” is what??? You Know —— DEGREE.

So YouMeWe must Understand (at (y)our own pace of course) that (y)our Universally applicable ’scale of degree’ is obviously applicable to ‘both sides’ — corruption and altruism, deception and Balanced Presentation, Conflicts of Interest and Non-Attachment.  I AM saying that no individual or position is absolutely exempt from any particular quality — so called “good” or so called “evil”, even those persons and positions that we would like to Be totally Free from the fallacies of we – ourselves have or Human/Beings in general have.

Also, YouMeWe must Understand (at (y)our own pace of course) that (y)our own fallibility imPerfection and duality is necessarily applicable to everything that You Interpret and thus, Create in your own Image — including — Politicians (especially Politicians), Doctors, Nurses, Chief Executive Officers (CEO’s), Corporation, Radio Stations, Television PROGRAMS, Cartoons, Food Produces, Food and Drug Administrations, Centers for Dis-ease Control (are we sure that individuals Controlling Dis-ease is a necessarily ‘good’ thing??? ), Educational Systems and World Wide WEB’s……this only difference is of degree.   If YOU had someOne’s Heart in your hand or a remote control for their Mind — is it even possible for ANY decision that You make with their Heart and Mind to Be “Perfect”; and how altruistic would YOU Be with such Power and Control and Influence???   Seriously ask yourSelf this question.   Now apply your answer to the Human Beings that You Trust with your Heart and Mind in those leadership positions of Power and Control and Influence.   I say this to help You at least cope with the IDEA that You may Not Be operating in your best interest by listening to and following the claims of your normal ‘health professional’ and politicians Heroes/Heroines……there may Be more to the story.   I have certainly found this to Be the case, in fact, overwhelmingly so.

Sphere of Influence

Also, consider this —— the larger YOUR sphere of influence, the higher your degree of EVERYTHING. Every decision and make and Word You say had an influence that is greater than and less than every other sphere of influence by a specific and measurable multiple. If YOU are The Head of State or CEO or Head of your Household then YOUR corruption is EXTRA Corruption……RELATIVE to those whose sphere of influence is lesser than yours. YOUR Altruism and steps stepped for advancement of everyOne’s Universal evolution. I mean Think about it, You would have to Be One SUPER SUPER SUPER enLight-ened or Self-less or Universally interested (or whatever Words that You choose) to Be in a position of relatively Extraordinary Power, Influence and CONTROLLLLLL annnnnnd NOT…… Be Responsible for destroying and rebuilding the lives of Thousands, Millions or even Billions. Right???

Basically, JUST KNOW THAT WHAT YOU HEAR ABOUT SWINE FLU AND HEALTH AND SPIRITUALITY AND THIS AND THAT AND BLAH DEE BLAH DEE BLAH DEE BLAH………

IS WHAT SOMEONE WWWAAANNNTTTSSS YOU TO HEAR AND THINK AND THEN DO!!!

Everything, I mean every single “thing” —— is the reflection of a single point of view, whether group sight or the individual Eye —— so IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE INTENTIONS INTERWOVEN INTO THE POINT OF VIEW THAT YOU ACCEPT AND PERPETUATE THEN YOU COULD EASILY EASILY EASILY BE ADVANCING AN AGENDA THAT YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH OR EVEN RESULTS IN YOUR DETRIMENT!!!

Tepperman Says Obama Should Learn to Love the Bomb

There is a body of opinion that claims that nuclear weapons actually bring peace as a stablizing force.  Jonathan Tepperman added recently to the list of those who  that present that argument.  After all, since the US dropped atomic bombs on Japan there have been no world wars and in 30 years prior to their use, there had been two that cost at least 60 million lives and did untold economic destruction. But, the trouble with nuclear weapons is that, if they are used, then the consequences are grave. I mean, aside from the destruction brought about by the use of one, the only real reaction a nation could have would be to retaliate with another nuclear weapon and then it could escalate from there. So, President Obama recently went beyond his earlier call for the reduction of nuclear arsenals in Russia and the United States by 80 percent, but also a more ambitious proposal to eliminate nuclear weapons from the earth altogether. Trouble with that is, how do you get everyone to agree, how can you be sure the other guys don;’t have them, what do you do if someone does have them and how wise is it for the United States to give up its “big stick.”

Missile Shield Plan Off The Board But Russia Doesn't Seem to Want to Respond

Now, the US and Russia are in negotiations regarding a new nuclear arms agreement.  The Obama administration already changed course from a Bush-era program that proposed a anti-missile shield based in Eastern Europe.  The Russians saw that as a threat and so said that they would use nuclear weapons if threatened.  The Obama administration recently cancelled the anti-missile shield for Eastern Europe, angering some of the Eastern Europeans and some members of NATO.  It was seen as an olive branch of sorts to the Russians.  Sometimes, the other guy doesn’t go along.  The Russians now say that they will reserve the right to make a pre-emptive nuclear strike if it feels threatened.  Perhaps unilateral decisions will eventually bear fruit, but so far its hard to see how anything has changed with the change from a European based missile shield for the NATO allies and the new proposal, which would be for a ship based system.  If it weren’t for the Iranian nuclear program, the North Korean nuclear program, the trouble in Pakistan and India which are both part of the nuclear club this might make one chuckle as we talk about arms reduction or nuclear weapons bans.  But, the only way one can laugh in this developing situation may be to get a dose of laughing gas…

On This Date in History: In the first half of the 19th Century, performers went around the country

performing acts that showed the side effects of nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas.” A Georgia physician, Dr. Crawford Long attended a party in which the foolishness took place and was asked by friends if he could make up a batch for their own private fun. Long suggested the use of ether instead as he found it quite suitable for the desired effects. At that point, all across the Peach State laughter at parties was heard of people chuckling at each others stumbling and bumbling while high on ether. Long’s interest was piqued. He noted how people didn’t feel any pain.

One of the fellow party makers was James Venable who had a tumor. Now, at the time, the pain associated with surgery was totally based on how fast the surgeon could do his work. So, Long convinced Venable to try out the gas before he had his tumor removed. He agreed and on March 30, 1842 the tumor was removed successfully without pain. But, Long did not publish his findings right away as he was not fully convinced. Long’s conservative approach was probably a good idea.

Dentist Horace Wells in Hartford, CT attended a laughing gas show and recognized the potential of nitrous oxide. So, he jumped the gun and took his case to the Massachusetts General Hospital where the demonstration promptly went asunder and Wells was ridiculed as a fraud. That led to Dr. William Morton.

Dr. Morton had worked with Dr. Wells and had learned of the promise of ether’s numbing properties from chemist Dr. Charles Jackson. He tried it out on some patients to much success and he too went to Massachusetts General Hospital. He said he had discovered a new wonder drug. What he really had was the very same ether that Wells had, but he camouflaged it with aromic oils so it would alter the oder. On October 16, 1846 the chief of surgery at Massachusetts General removed a neck tumor and also performed a leg amputation. The surgeries were pain free and the age of anesthetics was here. Morton patented the formula hoping to get rich.

But, Jackson and his supporters claimed they were the true discoverers. Morton in 1868 went to New York to defend his position against supporters of Jackson. He had a seizure and died. Upon seeing Morton’s tombstone that gave Morton credit for anesthetic, Jackson went insane and spent the rest of his life in an asylum. Then we have the fate of Dr. Wells, who jumped the gun with his demonstration. He became addicted to chloroform and his mind eroded. He ended up in jail and somehow got ahold of chloroform, soaked a clothe in it and covered his face after opening up his arteries. He quietly and painlessly bled to death.

As for perhaps the true pioneer of the use of anesthetics, Dr. Crawford Long? The one who was not bold enough to publish his findings? He continued as a general practitioner until 1878 when he died making a house call. Perhaps his caution and conservative approach was reflective of his life as those who went for the fame and fortune all died in bizarre and untimely manners. I wonder if those 3 would think that it was worth it?

Weather Bottom Line:  I told you that the weather was gonna be lousy.  Tough to make an argument concerning Global Warming these days.  The clouds, rain and cold air will persist through early Saturday with maybe even some sleet in spots prior to Sunrise Saturday.  The precip will be tapering off but it should remain cloudy on Saturday with highs having a tough time getting to 50.  High pressure builds in Saturday night and chases away the clouds but Sunday morning church could be frosty with many people in the low 30’s if not some upper 20’s in the northern part of the viewing area.   Sunshine Sunday helps us get to the mid 50’s.  The big trof that brought all of the unseasonably cold air to the eastern part of the country will be lifting out and we really ought to have very pleasant conditions through Wednesday with temps climbing Monday afternoon to the low 60’s, then mid 60’s on Tuesday and maybe even to 70 on Wednesday.

The author, last name Show first name Reelin, has already published The Theory of Despace in Mandarin, his first language, and he is now in the process of translating it into English (he has asked me to help edit after I contacted him for an interview!).
